RCR ARQUITECTES

RCR Arquitectes is an architectural firm founded in the small town of Olot, Catalonia, Spain in 1988. It was founded by Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, and Ramon Vilalta. All three graduated from the School of Architecture in Valles in 1987, and then returned to Olot to form RCR. Their approach towards architecture is universal; they were said to be the masters of outdoor and indoor spaces and are continuously breaking the boundaries between interior and exterior concepts, perfecting their ability of creating filters and in-betweens that do not meet the standardized ideas of inside-outside. The trio contributed their ideals and success to their first competition; building the Punta Aldea lighthouse in 1989, which they conceived the lighthouse to be a light at a certain height instead of a standard lighthouse.

Their archiectural firm, the Barbari Laboratory, is one of their finest achievements. The trio renovated it from an early 20th sentru foundry between the years of 2005 and 2008. Their idea was to preserve as much of the original structure as possible while creating new spaces: an office for the founders, another office for the firm’s staff, and a pavilion which is surrounded by the ruins of the buildings, where they contemplate and design ideas.

Besides the Punta Aldea competition in 1989, RCR Arquitectes received numerous awards and achievements: The National Award for Culture in Architecture by the Catalonian government in 2005.

The French Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Académie d’Architecture in both 2008 and 2014.

The Gold Medal by the French Académie d’Architecture in 2015.

The title of Honorary Fellows of the American Institute of Architecture in 2010.

The title of International Fellows of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2012.

The laureates of the Prikzter Prize in 2017, the most prestiguous architectural award.

PROJECTS

MURABA The Muraba Residences was designed by RCR Arquitectes and completed in 2016. It is their first largescale residential project, located on the Eastern Crescnet of the Palm Jumeirah Crescent. Each of the rooms are open to the iconic skyline and oceans of Dubai. The name ‘muraba’ is derived from the arabic word for watchtower, which serves as the basis for the project’s concept. The frim used simple materials while focusing more on the spaces of the building in an effort to connect them with the surrounding beach landscape.

The building is ten stories tall, with an overall overage of 10,954 square meters of area.

It is composed of 46 apartments and four penthouses, with 2-3 bedrooms and 4-5 rooms respectively.

All the windows are 1,364 square meters.

The manufacturers are Linvisible, Sky-Frame, Glasshouse, and Khansaheb.

The residents have access to a swimming pool that extends the entire with of the building, along with an indoor spa and gym.

Based on RCR Arquitectes’s ‘inside-outside’ philosophy, the project appears to blend into the landscape though the building’s aesthetics. The thresholds between the inside and outside of the building are made to the inclusion of the outside landscape into the architecture. The pools and windows reflect the landscape around them and the sky above, creating a continuous cycle between the landscapes and the reflections created by the building. The buildings responds directly to the landscape, meeting the sun’s trajectory through the day or even year, which helps to create the continuos cycle of reflections.

The entire project is situated in an open view, allowing the residents to enjoy the tranquility and relaxation the landscape can provide for them.

The interior of the apartments is designed on a color palette that symbolizes the beach and oceans, allowing the residents to feel as though they are still connected to the outside landscape at any time. The large windows allows natural light to pierce through the very depths of the buildings and create a direct connection between the interior and exterior. The programs/ spaces are divided through different materials and furniture, but are still seamlessly unified as one through aesthetical use of said materials.
