OUR NEWEST BROTHERS This past spring, I was elected to serve as Pledge Class President for the 2020 pledge class of the Miami Chapter of the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity. I was honored to have the opportunity to lead an exquisite group of potential new members in our attempts to uphold the values and ideals of Delta Upsilon. For me personally, the decision to join Delta Upsilon was never a question. I have been able to witness first-hand the ideas and values that Delta Upsilon instills into its members all my life, as my father and both of my uncles were all members of the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity at the University of Kansas. I have witnessed the lifelong friendships 2020 Spring Pledge Class the fraternity has created, and one could go as far as to say that I would not be here today if not for Delta Upsilon. One of my father’s closest friends to this day, a fellow brother of Delta Upsilon, introduced my father to my mother. This fellow brother, my Uncle David, married my mother’s sister, making my father and him not only fraternity brothers, but brothers in law. The Delta Upsilon fraternity has had profound effects on lives in my family, and I was humbled with the opportunity to lead the incoming pledge class and to have the chance to leave an everlasting mark on the fraternity I have always had love and respect for. The opportunities and relationships the Delta Upsilon chapter at Miami University offers are unparalleled. Being the only one from my high school to attend Miami University, I entered college with few pre-existing relationships. I spent the majority of my first semester searching for new friendships and was welcomed into Delta Upsilon with open arms. Every active member I was introduced to greeted me with a sense of compassion and welcoming that made me feel as if we had been lifelong friends already. Although I was a stranger from Kansas, they welcomed me as if I was one of their own. I felt at home, as these were the same attributes of friendship and kindness that I had witnessed for years in my uncles and father. I knew this sense of belonging was unique. I knew this sense of friendship, of justice, of liberal culture, of character, could only be found at Delta Upsilon. I knew this is where I wanted to spend my next four years, and a lifetime. I knew then that I wanted to do whatever I could to give as much back to the house that had already given so much to me. Being elected Pledge Class President presented me with my first opportunity to fulfill my dreams and to lead my fellow potential new members to greatness. - Will Bruso ‘23
