A NIGHT 50 YEARS IN THE MAKING

On December 12, 1969, 13 men with backgrounds in the retail sale of insurance and mutual funds gathered for an inaugural meeting in a hotel outside Chicago’s O’Hare airport. The attendees were increasingly aware that investment products alone could not fully address the needs of their clients. They sought a new way, one that would take a more integrated and holistic approach to address their clients’ needs. Their discussion set the groundwork for what we now know as financial planning.
SUPPORTING SUSTAINABILITY
Since then, financial planning has become a recognized international profession. We have come a long way from the first class of 42 individuals who completed the first CFP ® certification program at the College for Financial Planning in 1973, to the more than 188,104 (as at end of 2019) CFP ® professionals certified today around the world, and the many thousands of others who deliver or support the delivery of financial planning or provide professional financial planning education.
