Cancer Center Welcomes Hematologist-Oncologist DR. ROOZBEH MOHAJER,

a hematologist-oncologist and hospice and palliative medicine specialist has joined Sonora Regional Cancer Center.

Dr. Mohajer will provide care for patients full time in Sonora.

He will also serve as the medical director of Oncology Services and help with the development of the new Cancer Center at the corners of Greenley Road and Mono Way. Dr. Mohajer earned his medical degree from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. He completed his residency in internal medicine with the University of Illinois at St. Joseph hospital. He also completed fellowship training in hospice and palliative medicine at Rush University Medical Center and hematology-oncology fellowship at Stronger Hospital of Cook County in Illinois.

Happy New Year Everybody!

It’s really unbelievable how much is going on and how many changes there have been– some of them big time: The Red Apple was sold by the Darby family to Lloyd and Chris Bunch, a run of ownership that lasted some 125 years.

One of the original brothers was a “Lloyd,” and then of course there was the Lloyd we all grew up with, so now this new Lloyd will be “Lloyd to the third power”– he’s a true farmer so that’s cool.

Bear Valley Ski Resort sold for only the third time; which is very big news, in that the new owners appear to be taking “The Mountain” on a course back to “The Bigs,” which as they say about rising tides, the community could use.

And get this: The Utica House Hotel in historic downtown Angels Camp looks to have sold. “The Dark Hole of Angels Camp,” as my Pop has come to refer to the building may soon get a face-lift. Then watch out– Angels Camp is going to blossom on the vine.

In addition, there are a number of other interesting changes, some we touch upon in the following pages, but there are so many: The previous owners of the White Pines Bar are moving to the newly being remodeled “Old Avery Market Building,” so Avery will longer be a “dry state.”

One item that sounds promising is across from Sierra Hills Market.

Reportedly we’re going to see the birth of a Mongolian BBQ. This is big news for my brother Warren. He introduced me to Mongolian BBQ way back in the day. He has always had an eye out for such things, he also introduced me to Hot & Sour Soup, but that’s a longer story.

On another note: My apologies for starting my 2015 opinions off by “over indulging” on the whole rectal hydration theme. My head is still spinning from the Meet the Press interview with Dick Cheney. When Chuck Todd accepted Cheney’s explanation that the detainees’ “infused lunch” was for “medical purposes” I totally lost it. I’ve not been the same since. I built and now pray regularly in front of my Tim Russert shrine, but that’s a topic for those at The Hague. My point is that it’s 2015. Thank God it’s not 1915, because if it were, in just a few days the world would experience WWI’s first use of chemical weapons. So, I’m very happy to “be here now.”

My question or rather my point is: What will it be like a hundred years from now? Humans barely survived the last 100. My hope is that some editor looks back 100 years from now at 2015 and says “wow, those guys made it possible for us.”

The Darby Ranch Since 1890 Gets Its 3rd Lloyd!

The Red Apple Bakery and Fruit Stand is an iconic institution

to most of us that have lived here or have visited Ebbetts Pass.

Lloyd and Ken Darby’s little apple donuts are about as famous as the Frog Jump. And many will always remember the “Apple Licks.” The Darby Ranch had a run of Darby ownership that lasted some 125 years, until time finally played its hand and the ranch ran out of Darbys interested in running the little stand.

Lloyd and Chris do have plans for the ranch, but they are “long run” type thinking people. Lloyd was talking mostly about his strategy for rehabilitating the orchard and they would like to make some fundamental improvements to the buildings. Lloyd is also planning a spot where he plans to raise vegetables that might work in this climate to, hopefully, augment his haul from the valley.

Folendorf was sworn into the Angels Camp City Council on January 6th, the latest in a long family tradition of Angels Camp public service. At 28, Amanda is the youngest person to be elected to the city council and only the fifth woman.

The Speaker for this meeting will be Benno Nager, General Manager of Skyline Bear Valley Mountain Resort and Rosie Sundell, Director of Marketing. They will speak about Bear Valley’s future since the Skyline International Development, Inc., acquisition of the Bear Valley Ski Area.

Everyone Deserves To Be Warm!

Hi, my name is Katie Aguirre. I am writing on behalf of our homeless population who are facing this winter without shelter. On Christmas Day six years ago, Operation Warmth was born. I was living in West Point and going to visit my daughter and family in Twain Harte. Before leaving I looked for my sleeping bag in case I spent the night. Searching high and low, I almost gave up before finally finding the bag in our storage shed zipped up in plastic. I placed the bag in the trunk and headed out.

When I arrived in Sonora it was snowing. I stopped at Starbucks to get a warm cup of coffee and think about putting chains on. I noticed a man sitting outside in the cold with a thin jacket on and we exchanged Christmas greetings. Walking out with coffee in hand, my mind was filled with thoughts of impending snow chains. Starting the engine, I suddenly remembered the man sitting outside. I rolled down my window to wave goodbye and wish him a Merry Christmas. He waved back smiling and then came over to the car. He hesitated and then asked if I happen to have an old blanket. He said the night before he had slept outside on a piece of cardboard with newspapers over him to try and stay warm. I was sorry I didn't have an old blanket, but then suddenly I remembered something much better- the sleeping bag in my trunk! When I handed it to him, he started to cry. He said I would never know how much this meant to him. Tonight he would not be lying in the cold shivering on a piece of cardboard with newspapers draped over him. Instead he would be snug and warm inside the sleeping bag. As I Big or Small, pulled away in the parking lot he stood there until I couldn’t see him anymore, clutching the We Can sleeping bag to his chest while snow fell all around him. I never forgot this man and the Handle It All! impact a sleeping bag made on his life. It could literally make the difference between life and death for a homeless person exposed to the bitter elements of winter.

The Folendorf family has a long history of community involvement stretching back to the 1940s.

Amanda’s grandmother, Ada Folendorf, served on the Angels Grammar School Board and later on the Mark Twain Elementary School Board when it merged with Altaville. Her grandfather, Moxie Folendorf, was Deputy Fire Chief in Angels Camp from the 1940s into the 1980s. He also served on the Mark Twain Hospital Board for 32 years. Her uncle, Tim Folendorf, was on the Calaveras Fair Board for 13 years. And finally, her father, Tad Folendorf, served on the City Council from the 1970s through 1998 and was the mayor of Angels Camp from 1995 to 1998.

California State Summer School for the Arts 2015 Applications Due On or Before February 28th

Katie Aguirre ~ Operation Warmth Along the way many wonderful people have helped to make “Operation Warmth” possible. There are many amazing stories. From dozens and dozens of sleeping bags carried out from the top of mountains in large sacks on the back of my brother, while he was flying at the end of a cable attached to a helicopter, to a little girl last year (KB) who was inspired by the story. She has such a heart for the homeless that she now makes collecting sleeping bags her Christmas and Birthday gift wish and gives away sleeping bags to the homeless.

Another generous soul delivered a whole pickup load of sleeping bags. He said it was his Christmas gift to his wife, because he knew how much she would like it. Jackson Cleaners on Main Street has been so kind to volunteer and clean used sleeping bags for Operation Warmth.

If you have an extra sleeping bag or tent to donate, you could make a big difference in the life of a homeless person. Onehundred percent of donations will go directly to the homeless.

For 29 years, the California State Summer School for the Arts has sought the most talented high school aged visual, literary, media and performing artists in California. The teenagers who are selected are designated California Arts Scholars and attend one of the country’s premier summer arts programs on the campus of the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, this year from July 11 – August 7, 2015.

Over its history, CSSSA has provided its exemplary fourweek summer arts program to more than 14,000 talented high school students. Instruction is offered in the fields of Animation, Film/Video, Creative Writing, Dance, Music, Theater, and the Visual Arts. For 520 high school students accepted each year, CSSSA represents a unique opportunity to spend four weeks studying and working with professional artists, writers and performers of national stature. The talented teenagers who successfully complete the program are eligible to receive three units of California State University course credit.

CSSSA provides the highest quality professional artistic training to the most deserving teenagers regardless of their economic situations. More than 30 percent of the students receive financial aid. CSSSA expects to equal or surpass that record in 2015. No student who has the drive and talent to succeed in the applications process will be denied admission, solely on the basis of inability to pay. California students are charged a comprehensive fee of $1,500 to cover room, board and tuition for the four-week 2015 summer session. Students from outside California must pay a comprehensive fee of $5,000.

CSSSA is also able to help some of its students with college aid through the distribution of Herb Albert Scholarships for Emerging Young Artists. An agreement between CSSSA and the Herb Albert Foundation, which committed $1.6 million in funds for this project, means that 21 students each year are designated Scholarship recipients. The scholarships are awarded every summer to three students in each of the seven categories: Animation, Film/Video, Creative Writing, Dance, Music, Theater, and the Visual Arts.

In 2015 in each category, one outstanding student will receive $40,000 to be awarded over the course of four years, and two students will receive single-year awards of $2,500.

New Court House, New Judges – Healy & Barrett Sworn In Grant Barrett and Timothy Healy were sworn into office as Calaveras County Superior Court Judges on Monday, January 5th.

San Andreas Town Hall is again the venue for 2015’s event. Attendees will enjoy a delicious buffet dinner, catered by The Pickle Patch. A no-host bar will feature a special signature drink. Live and silent auctions will keep you entertained and an outstanding assortment of valuable raffle items will be available to choose from. We encourage you to participate in raucous rounds of Xtreme Musical Chairs. Admission is $25 – advance ticket sales only.

The two judges were elected to replace judges Douglas V. Mewhinney and John E. Martin who had both served lengthy terms as the county judges, both of whom retired in 2012, and 2014 respectively.

Sponsoring and hosting Chairs for Charity 2015 are Calaveras Arts Council and Soroptimist International of Calaveras County. Broad ranges of artworks are encouraged. Past entries have included benches, photography of chairs, ceramics, quilting pieces, children’s high and rocking chairs and chairs featuring live plants. The sky is truly the limit.

Healy defeated Judge Hugh Swift who had been appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to fill Mewhinney’s seat. Healy worked in the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, handling a variety of cases.

What a great opportunity for Calaveras County non-profit groups, schools, individuals or organizations to make a little extra cash! Professional artists and community groups receive 40% of the auction price. Put your creative thinking caps on and provide the most unique chair, stool, bench, or artistic chair-like design possible. Judges will choose the “Top Ten” to be sold via live auction.

Barrett defeated Deputy District Attorney, Dana Pfeil. Barrett was previously the Calaveras Court Commissioner, handling family law cases and civil litigation.

Only 30 total entries will be accepted. As of this date, we already have 11 entries.

Some of the entries’ names are: “Waiting for a Kiss,” “Throne,” “Take a Load Off,” “Got Milk?,” “Graffiti Afghan,” “Ride ‘em Cowboy,” “Sunflower Shine” and “Ghost Dance” by Dale Huey “Bows and Arrows.” Entries must be delivered to the Arts Council Gallery by January 12th.

“PAWS” “Seeing the Elephant” Educational Weekend Getaways Understanding Elephants: Our “Seeing the Elephant” getaways are designed to provide a better understanding of elephants as individuals and their needs in captivity.

Participants spend the day with PAWS president and co-founder, Ed Stewart, and ARK 2000 Sanctuary manager, and senior elephant keeper, Brian Busta, and the PAWS elephants, observing the individual personalities and learning about the differences between African and Asian elephants, socialization of unrelated animals and the special handling that is required for bull elephants like Nicholas.

Demonstrations on foot care and positive reinforcement training to deal with medical problems, and long hikes through the elephant’s habitats are included in this diverse, educational program.

Elephants in captivity have suffered greatly and need specialized care. The unique elephants who share our lives are representative of all captive elephants. We hope to provide an experience that will enlighten our visitors to the problems inherent in keeping these highly social animals in captive situations and the understanding and care which is necessary to meet each individual elephant’s special needs. At the end of the day participants will, truly, have “Seen the Elephant.”

Deborah Marlene’s Says “Aloha” Debra Marlene announced the closing of her art gallery in Mokelumne Hill. “My time in this small space has been wonderful. Mokelumne Hill was an excellent landing spot, and is a wonderful place to live as an artist,” Marlene said.

In praise of his organization, the confident Jeffords told the Calaveras Chronicle “We have a small group of talented volunteers with genuinely excellent ideas and the experience and commitment to carry out our mission.”

Next Steps After the membership program and related projects are well established, the CCEDC will pursue methods to help new small-scale entrepreneurs open shop in Calaveras. Meanwhile, the assessment of current business status and needs will continue, along with an asset inventory documenting the properties and infrastructure of Calaveras County.

First Things First In pursuit of business expansion and retention, Jeffords and company have since been meeting with local business operators, explaining EDC goals, asking their ideas and learning what they buy and sell in the course of their operations.

“We want to be in a position to show potential out-of-county operators where they can relocate with the space, services and other amenities needed to begin a turn-key business,” said Jeffords. “We have established a relationship with Peter Maurer, the county’s new Planning Director, and we look forward to helping make it easier to do business in Calaveras.”

In addition to that ongoing assessment, the CCEDC plans to match inputs and outputs – In other words, connect businesses that buy goods and services outside of Calaveras County with those who produce the same goods & services within the county.

Leadership Team President Dave Jeffords’ career includes organizational leadership in the information technology industry and in prior non-profit operations. Maurice Bennett, whose qualifications include 20 years of leadership as a Naval Officer, now serves as vice president.

Bringing broadband access to unserved and underserved regions is another necessity for business retention and expansion. The CCEDC has collaborated with Central Sierra Connect in that effort. In doing so, Jeffords arranged the firstever meeting of six local wireless internet service providers to participate in a USDA-led conference about securing grants to expand wireless service in rural communities.

How To Foster A Love For Reading In Our Children

By Fran Devlin, Arnold Branch Library A love for reading and books is a wonderful gift. Knowing how to read is essential; loving to read opens us up to new worlds, new possibilities. By reading, children can visit different lands, save princesses, learn how to build, how to draw, how to…well, how to just about do anything. It’s important that children understand that books are a useful source of information and that good reading skills are important for success in their future lives.

Read to your children from birth. Show them bright pictures and simple texts. Introduce them to the rhythm of Dr Seuss.

Enjoy the close, loving relationship fostered between parent and child while reading aloud.

Lead by example: Keep books and reading materials in your home. The more reading materials available to children, the more they see you reading for enjoyment, the more your children will value reading. When children see their parents set reading time as a priority they will understand that reading is important. And don’t forget to provide a comfy spot for this activity. Kids love pillows!

Visit your local library: Don’t have room for all the books your children will love? Your local library has a children’s library containing books, books on tape, books on CD, movies and so much more. You and your children can spend time looking through our books or borrow them – for free.

Managing Passwords And E-mails

Managing passwords and emails will be among the topics covered when the Sierra Macintosh Users Group (SMUG) holds its monthly meeting, Tuesday, January 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the community room of the Murphys Library, 480 Park Lane, adjacent to Murphys Park.

Because of iffy weather conditions in higher altitudes, SMUG moves its regular meeting site from its regular Arnold location to Murphys for the months of January, February and March.

Norm Milsner, one of the founders of SMUG, and a recognized Apple guru, will be making the presentation and responding to questions. All owners of iMacs, iPads, and iPhones are encouraged to take part in the exploration of all things Apple.

SMUG meetings are open to everyone and there is no charge to attend. The organization exists to keep Apple users abreast of the latest developments and to address the nagging questions that arise from time to time. SMUG’s goal is to take the mystery out of computers and to enable members to take advantage of all the features their Macs possess.

The Chronicle spoke with Ruth Darby about some the apple stand’s history. Ruth married

the second Lloyd in 1972. Ruth said the Darby brothers, Lloyd and Ken, brought the apple stand and bakery to life. Ruth said that is was Ken Darby though that was the master of the donut.

Ken and Lloyd would take turns making the donuts from week to week and when Ken made them they were perfectly round, but when Lloyd made them they looked like “dune buggy tires.”

The Darby boys were avid hunter with deer liver being a most coveted prize. Ruth said they also had a favorite watercress salad. The watercress they would gather from a hidden spot and the dressing remains a family secret.

As for the present, The Red Apple makes all of its baked goods from scratch using seasonal fruits, berries, and nuts. The quality found in the bakery is a result of generations of baking tradition, dating back to Chris’ great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother who taught her much of what she knows. The signature crust Chris makes has a flavor that is all her own. The California Nut pie recipe is a spin-off of a Southern Nut pie made by Annie Mae, Chris’ great-grandmother, and was a favorite of her grandfather, “Doc.” The fruit pies are just like ‘grandma’ used to make, with just a touch of vanilla. Lloyd is in charge of the apple pie filling, using his own special recipe, which they use to fill not only the apple pies, but the strudels, turnovers, and crisps as well.

In addition to the wide variety of apples, there is also the acclaimed fruit stand featuring an assortment of homegrown fruits and vegetables. In season, they offer an abundance of stone fruits, such as cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, and nectarines. They also feature truly vine-ripened tomatoes, freshly picked vegetables, and a great collection of melons.

The Red Apple has become a farmer’s market including produce for canning, making preserves or juicing.

And, there are still the donuts!

What to Call the Codgers?

In July 2014, an NPR, National Public Radio, survey revealed “despised and acceptable” terms for aging. 2,700 listeners were polled addressing the compelling question “What Do We Call Seniors?”

The winning catchwords of the survey were “older adults” or “older people.”

However, neither had a lackluster win, with many who simply disliked both words.

What should we never, never, never say? Senior Citizen! Its distinction earned the most despised term of all. The NPR crowd overwhelming nixed that one. NPR has smart listeners!

The poll probed further, asking listeners what aging terms they disliked. The majority’s disapproval of disrespectful labels included: geezer, old-timer, elderly, positive aging, successful aging, golden years and geriatric.

Could this fear of being labeled “old” be so bad? Honestly, my vision is challenged, see the wrinkles, but I’m feeling great. Our publisher, the Rossmon, has hearing issues that our readers are familiar. If challenged with ongoing age related problems or other stressors that plague us in the later years of life, we will still be old.

We could disregard the entire issue and continue using whatever phrasing we fancy, regardless of others feelings and political correctness. Ignoring the negative meanings of age disparaging terms, we have a plethora of old folk slang words to utter: biddy, gaffer, old boy, blue-hair, coot, old fart, over the hill, sea hag, rhino and the newly coined term cougar – for you older babes out there living it up with a young buck! Why not join the British doctors who refer to older patients as “Crinkles” and “Bed Blockers?”

Terminology is not the real issue; it is the connotations associated with the terms that are hazardous to our emotions. Theses underlying attitudes and beliefs play a significant role in how society views aging. What should we call adults when they reach the renaissance of life at age 65…or should we forego calling them anything at all?

Is this just an American cultural predicament? Western society in general is uncomfortable with it, with the United States considered to be ‘’the eternal Peter Pan among nations. The Native American “elders” pass down their knowledge; in India, they are the head of the family, and ancient Romans believed them to be a precious resource. The Confucian doctrine of ‘filial piety’ continues to have a strong presence in Chinese and Asian culture. It simply means showing obedience, respect and deference to your elders. It’s considered a privilege to be in the enlightened company of an elder. If Americans experienced this reverence, I doubt that this would be a topic of discussion.

This burning question deserves an answer. Keep your comments to yourself if you want to stereotype seniors with language that includes goners, geezers or fuddyduddy. Euphemisms for old people have been around for years. The term “senior” was coined in the 1930s, replacing the phrase “old person.” The original use of senior citizen was for the communities oldest of the old; seniors were 50 years of age and the life expectancy in the USA was 63. Since then, life expectancy has risen dramatically to 78.7 years. “Senior citizen” replaced the derogatory term “old-age pensioner.”

With a growing 65+ population, how do you overcome their negative associations with aging? How do you talk to them and describe them without offending them?

What do you call people today past 60, 70, 80, 90 or 100? One name is certainly taboo, “elderly” which conjures up images of frail, decrepit senile and decline. It is weighted in stigma and lacking any warmth. However, “elders,” known to command and convey respect, took second in the NPR poll. It has its’ detractors who impart that the term reminds them of the church and patriarchy.

A Pew Research Center study of 2,929 Americans age 18 plus found that respondents under 30 said old age begins at 60, but respondents 65 plus said 74.

One 90-year-old woman did not think “old” started until you were 95. The words reflect changing attitudes toward age throughout the 20th century. Baby boomers, of mature age, older people, senior citizens, and elders have all been defined by positive and negative societal attitudes about getting older.

The Calaveras Chronicle team had a pow-wow session in the hopes of uncovering a few new terms that would gracefully define old and growing old. Our discussion unveiled two terms, “Seniority,” we liked its’ definition: the state of superior age.

The second term was inspired by the term teenager, “Senager.” This may be fitting since we are given the car keys as a teen and may lose them as an older senior!

What do we want our ‘label’ called when get older? It is a matter of perception.

Given our addiction to youth, if the name reflects this attitude, it is only a charming charade to cover the facts of nature. We are growing older every moment. For me, I am content with aging and growing old. If we are going to rephrase “old,” then call me a “Senager” when I’m 65.

SERVES 8 – 10 INGREDIENTS: 4 ½–lb. pork loin roast, trimmed 1 Tablespoons flour Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 Tablespoons finely chopped fresh rosemary 4 Tablespoons Olive Oil 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped 3 medium onions, sliced 4 stalks rosemary (optional) 5 baking apples, cored and quartered (do not remove the skin) ½ cup Red Apple’s Apple Cider ¼ cup good-quality calvados (apple brandy) INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 325°. Tie pork loin every 2” with kitchen twine so that it holds a “round” shape. In a small bowl, mix together flour, salt and pepper to taste, chopped rosemary, half of the garlic and olive oil. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork loin, coating Menu Suggestion evenly and well.

Serve with Creamy Mashed Potatoes and Brussel Sprouts Heat 2 tbsp. olive oil in a large heavy skillet and sear meat over high heat, turning often, until browned on all sides. Realizing The Connection

Every Christmas we try to live up to that timeless sentiment: Peace on earth, goodwill toward men (and women). We try to emphasize sharing, giving, resolution of conflict and strive for the lofty heights of our potential and become a more conscious member of our species to cultivate the ‘better angels of our nature.’ Certainly the effort is noble but in a world full of sorrow and woe it is hard to constantly sustain such a perspective when we see the same old stories unfolding around us, (or within us,) revealing the cruelty, selfishness and obliviousness to pain and suffering.

We wish it wasn’t so but if we even glance around the planet conflict, suffering, exploitation, despair and war. We might sing or whisper ‘Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me,’ but despite our deepest longing and most genuine yearning it remains elusive.

Wars have been with us for thousands of years and too often simply emerge as a result of petty differences, ego trips, greed and misunderstanding. On a small and personal scale they may lead to disruption of our domestic lives and affect our friendships and families in adverse ways, but when these qualities spill on to the global stage, it has led to the slaughter and suffering of tens of millions, just over the last century alone. It’s our own little world blown up, literally and figuratively on a massive scale.

One of the biggest of those wars, World War I, always seemed like something that easily could have been avoided.

Many of the countries in the conflict had leaders who were related or friendly with one another and the idea of an Austria/Hungary Archduke being assassinated in Sarajevo, Serbia being the catalyst for a catastrophic global war that killed over 15 million people has always baffled me.

An old bar joke tells the story in a simple but profound way: Germany, Austria and Italy are standing together in the middle of a pub when Serbia bumps into Austria and spills Austria’s pint. Austria demands Serbia buy it a whole new suit because of the new beer stain on its trouser leg. Germany expresses its support for Austria’s point of view.

Britain recommends that everyone calm down a bit. Serbia points out that it can’t afford a whole suit, but offers to pay for the cleaning of Austria’s trousers. Russia and Serbia give Austria the “look.” Austria asks Serbia who it’s looking at.

Russia suggests that Austria should leave its little brother alone.

Germany appeals to Britain that France has been giving them “the look.” Britain replies that France can look at who ever it wants to, and then Britain gives Germany the eye too.

Germany tells Russia to stop looking at Austria, or Germany will render Russia incapable of such action anymore. Britain and France ask Germany whether it’s looking at Belgium.

Turkey and Germany go off into a corner and whisper. When they come back, Turkey makes a show of not looking at anyone. Germany rolls up its sleeves, looks at France, and punches Belgium. France and Britain punch Germany.

Austria punches Russia. Germany punches Britain and France with one hand and Russia with the other. Russia throws a punch at Germany, but misses and nearly falls over.

Japan calls over from the other side of the room that it’s on Britain’s side, but stays there. Italy surprises everyone by punching Austria. Australia punches Turkey, and gets punched back. There are no hard feelings because Britain made Australia do it. France gets thrown through a plate glass window, but gets back up and carries on fighting.

Russia gets knocked out, suffers brain damage, and wakes up with a complete personality change.

Italy throws a punch at Austria and misses, but Austria falls over anyway. Italy raises both fists in the air and runs round the room chanting. America waits till Germany is about to fall over from sustained punching from Britain and France, then walks over and smashes it with a barstool, then pretends it won the fight all by itself. By now all the chairs are broken and the big mirror over the bar is shattered. Britain, France and America agree that Germany threw the first punch, so the whole thing is Germany’s fault. While Germany is still unconscious, they go through its pockets, steal its wallet, and buy drinks for all their friends.

In that absurdity, mayhem and madness called WWI there emerged a timeless Christmas story that touches even the hardest heart: A few months into the start of WWI British troops were mired in knee deep mud in the trenches on northern France.

Hardly more than a hundred yards away were the German soldiers slogging through their own trenches and facing the most miserable Christmas imaginable. It was Christmas Eve when a British sentry spotted a glimmering light, he was wary that it was a trap, but through the smoky haze and barbed wire, he noticed that it was a Christmas tree with lights and up and down the line more of them began to pop up. Then suddenly, he began to hear the sound of the song ‘Silent Night’ and though he didn’t understand the language the tune was quite familiar and when the Germans ended the song, the British troops responded with cheers.

As the dawn broke on Christmas morning and the horror of ‘no mans land’ between the trenches something utterly shocking came into view. Amidst the barbed wire, frozen and twisted corpses, eviscerated trees and muddy craters, soldiers, from both sides, began to emerge. They shook hands, wished each other a Merry Christmas, shared smokes, sausages, pudding, chocolate or whatever they had, and conversed as best they could. The sentiment spread up and down the front and at one point the Germans even rolled a few barrels of beer toward the British trenches to share with the enemy. They raised toasts to each other and both sides apparently agreed that French beer was “rotten stuff.”

More than one soccer game broke out between the two sides and where a ball wasn’t available the two sides utilized a soggy boot or a tin can. When the two sides returned to their trenches a British captain raised a flag that read Merry Christmas in German. His German counterpart raised a flag that said Thank You in English and then the two captains mounted the parapets, saluted each other and returned to their respective trenches and almost immediately shots were fired into the air to signify that the war was again on.

One British soldier was so moved by the day that he wrote home that “I wouldn’t have missed the experience of that Christmas day for the most gorgeous dinner in all of England.”

If only that spirit, that realization of connection to each other could rise to the surface, we might someday be able to imagine a world we’ve seen only on a bumper sticker: “What if they called a war and nobody came?” ■

or a water buffalo. Get on, get off, in the latter case before you’re thrown off. Or, better, have a proper strategy and the right gear to make a train trip easier and more fun. I’ve learned a few things over years of riding rails that can steer you down the vanishing tracks.

First, is the trip longer or shorter than 12 hours or so? If shorter, don’t pay the whopping expense of a sleeper. My most recent trip was from Sacramento to Eugene, Oregon, on the Coast Daylight, roughly 12 hours. It’s somewhat the same south to L.A. Outfit yourself to snooze in the reclining chairs during the less scenic parts of your trip, or catch plenty of sleep before you climb on if you intend to remain awake throughout.

The Sacto to Eugene trip begins at midnight, perfectly scheduled for a six-hour snooze before waking up at dawn for Mt. Shasta and then the lovely mountains into and through Oregon. If you’re going all the way to Seattle or heading across the country, best get a sleeper.

The gear for a comfortable trip in the recliner is pretty simple: an angular lumbar pillow to support the back, a curved neck pillow to keep your head from wobbling around, a pair of eyeshades, a pair of ear plugs, a light wool blanket.

The neck pillow is a bargain at Travelmate Memory Foam Neck Pillow and the shades/plugs from Prime Effects Sweet Dreams Sleep Mask w/Ear Plugs, both from Amazon.

Without this stuff, you will writhe around in the seat like a dog trying to find a comfortable position, and will find the night lights at the vestibule of the car preventing your slumber.

Take a small ice chest or lunch bag equipped to handle a slip-in blue ice pack, set up to hold a water bottle, preferably something permanent like stainless steel. There should be enough food for the equivalent of one meal plus substantial snacks for one or two people. I carried three power bars, a small bag of nuts, two almond butter and jam sandwiches, an apple, a banana and a piece of dark chocolate and my usual tea bags for two of us. With the water bottle and the food, I was able to avoid the snack bar and the dining car completely, except for one trip to get a cup of hot water for my tea bag.

Barbara did make runs for what turned out to be bad coffee.

Take one or two of your favorite unread mags, and if you are a fast reader, an easy novel. It is difficult to concentrate on anything too demanding, given the level of distraction – people walking by, the conductor punching tickets, the relentless rumble, the passing scenery. Not a good time for Braudel’s “History of Civilization.”

I always choose the upper level, if I have a choice. The advantage is that you are on the same level as the observation car, a direct walk through whatever other coach cars are in front of you, and the view from on high is better. You will have to climb down the narrow stairway to get to the bathrooms, so if your balance level or your bladder isn’t good, then choose the lower level.

I try to get one of the rear cars if possible, especially on a trip like this one where the train is winding through the mountains. You can watch the entire train as it twists through the turns ahead of you. The disadvantage is the length of walk through the other coach cars to reach the observation car, though the walk is a very good way to get exercise.

Watercolor By Barbara Hall Speaking of which, make sure you get up occasionally for stretching and walking, and it is a good idea to wear very comfortable clothes and shoes. I wear loose sweats and slipon shoes, kicking off the shoes when I’m in the seat. I usually do some isometrics and neck rolls in my seat to keep energized.

There usually two kinds of bathrooms down below, a large one for handicapped use and tiny ones. I always use the large one, there being no restrictions. It is much easier to ‘perform’ without anxiety and discomfort.

Check in your heavy bag in advance so you only have to manage your light carry-on, the gear, and the lunch bag. My carry-on is my ever-present satchel, with mags, flashlight, pocket knife, extra eyeglasses and hearing aid kit, Kleenex packet, journal, note pad, extra pens, wallet. This thing never leaves my sight. Unless I am with a companion, it also goes with me on walks and to the bathroom.

Better to travel with a companion or mate than alone. You get total occupancy of the two seats rather than having to deal with strangers, unless you enjoy the luck of the draw and want to meet people. I did travel all the way across the country one year, had several delightful seatmates, only one awful bore and a coughing old geezer.

Be sure to visit the observation car as early as possible before anticipated scenery. We headed there with our food and personal bags as soon as dawn broke, finding sensational seats just before they filled up. There are usually both view seats and tables, for cards, eating or conversation. We stayed in the observation car for a couple of hours, viewing, eating, chatting, before returning to our coach recliners, which are far more comfortable.

Right Out Your Backdoor!

Longer trips are better with a sleeper, mostly because the coach recliners don’t allow flat sleeping or any privacy. But you will pay a large premium for the comfort. Meals are provided in the dining car, however, a pleasurable compensation in itself. You are even brought the morning paper in the sleeper, depending on what stops have been made during the night. No breakfast in bed though. All of the advice here for shorter trips also applies for longer ones.

Cross Country Skiing

All in all, train travel is a fabulous experience, especially if you, like me, don’t much enjoy flying and love scenery and having a real sense of the terrain. With a little advance planning, proper gear and a strategy, train travel is a real pleasure in life, a fun way to get from here to there.

What they should also include is “Friendly People, Relaxing Atmosphere, Outstanding Service and Exceptional Cuisine.”

Located in the heart of town at Cedar Center, this original concept in upscale, full-service dining is a delightful addition to the community.

Why? First, the immediate feeling is that it’s lively.

Proprietor and head chef Steve Rinauro has literally lit up this part of Arnold with a bold but relaxing atmosphere and staffed it with some of the town’s most capable hospitality professionals.

Another is the Cornbread Stuffed Tofu. Don’t let the stereotypical connotation of soy deter you; the crunchy baked texture and the blend of sweet corn with bitter frisée (a curly endive) once again surprises the palate with multiple sensations.

Rich colors, lots of wood, a dining bar with exhibition kitchen and vintage China add to the eclectic fun suited to couples and families alike.

In all three of our visits, The Soldier’s Daughter has offered for dessert a scrumptious Warm Chocolate Coconut Tapioca. Caramelized banana, mango broth and toasted granola are added to make a naturally sweet concoction with a soft, crunchy texture thanks to the coconut and granola chunks.

Starters we really like include Cheese Biscuits with Apple Jam, creamy Lemon Risotto and a fabulous Sweet Potato Chowder, the latter prepared with ancho chili oil for a slightly hot and sweet taste that continues to please after the course is gone.

House Favorites, or entrees, include delicious Cabbage Rolls made with rice, vegetables and orange sauce.

This dish is a real treat; it’s cooked fast enough to maintain the crispness of the cabbage but long enough to let the orange sauce and vegetable filling penetrate and permeate every bite.

A Treat for the Palate Perhaps unique to this restaurant is the creative application of taste and texture. Pretty much every dish we ordered carried some combination that triggered a subtle blend of salty, sweet, sour or bitter with the added sensation of various textures.

One such example is the Sea Shells & Cheese. With aged cheddar, garlic and broccolini, the flavors engage more of your taste buds than the traditional comfort food staple. You may be surprised to learn that added texture comes from crushed Kettle Chips.

Front Row Seating If you sit at the bar, you can watch the action in the restaurant’s open kitchen. It’s fun to observe the speed at which Rinauro and his team move while preparing and presenting each creation. All dishes are served fast, timely and at the proper temperature.

Beverages include over a dozen local wines, a variety of premium beers on tap and several homemade, sugar-free natural soft drinks.

What about the name? According to Rinauro, a selftaught chef, there’s a true story (but it may vary from day to day). He says it’s something to get people talking, and evidently, he is correct.

Overall Despite the restaurant’s investment in superior ingredients, all-new equipment and a very qualified staff, prices are moderate. Starters, Salads and Desserts are all $10 or less. Entrees run in the mid-teens.

When people generally think of bonsai, what frequently comes to mind are miniature trees grown over rock in small pots or containers. In this style, roots flow into many interesting directions and patterns, giving the tree its unique appearance. The shape and texture of the rock are also important considerations for they add to the richness of the composition.

Art Exhibiton Opens

What happens when you ask some of the best artists in two counties to create work around a common theme?

You get a major art exhibition that’s entirely provocative, different and new. Called “River Reflections,” the prodigious show brings together 40 original works of art, mostly paintings and photography, which offer different perspectives on the one and only Mokelumne River. The unique exhibit will travel to three locations during the next three months, but the kick-off event will be in Sutter Creek in Amador County at the Hotel Sutter. The opening reception will be on Saturday, January 10, from 2 to 5 pm. The public is invited to attend the event showcasing art, music, and poetry to celebrate along with the artists and local and statewide dignitaries. Don’t miss the outrageous human fountain of water that will beckon guests in front of the hotel.

River Reflections is a landmark arts endeavor created

by AmadorArts, aka Amador County Arts Council, as a “Creative California Communities” Project funded by the California Arts Council. Project partners are the Calaveras County Arts Council, the Foothill Conservancy, and East Bay Municipal Utility District.

Artists of all disciplines have created works reflecting the project’s mission of creating awareness and significance of the Mokelumne River in all of our lives, whether for drinking water for 1.4 million people, irrigation, power, recreation, or beauty. “People, especially those in the East Bay Area, are simply not aware of where their tap water actually comes from,” explains Terra Forgette, Project Coordinator.

A panel of well-respected art experts have judged the work, resulting in cash prizes for six artists from both Amador and Calaveras counties, including visual art, literary art, music, dance and performance art. Additional awards will come from a Popular Choice Vote whereby the public attending the exhibits may cast votes for their favorite based on these four themes: Recreation, Beauty, Resource, and Conservation.

Most all of the artwork is for sale and will prove to be highly regarded collector items.

Our team and our guests, Richard Brockett, and Eileen Dawson enjoyed a holiday dinner together at Rob’s Place. The food and service were excellent!!!

The watercolor medium has intrigued me since I first watched some artists painting on site in Murphys when I moved here several years ago. Through private lessons, workshops and community college classes I have learned the versatile aspects of this surprisingly forgiving but challenging medium. I continue to strive to add new dimensions to my work, always exploring new ideas and techniques.

We each ordered a different main course, giving us all the opportunity to taste many of Rob’s delicious selections. The Rossmon and I ordered the two steaks offered on the menu for comparison. Both were grilled medium rare. The Flat Iron Steak was served with a bordelaise and horseradish sauce. The Grilled New York, was a classic steak is served with a whiskey basil butter. Each served with fresh steamed vegetables and a potato side dish.

Rob loves making it fresh. He lives by the motto in his kitchen. It shows in the flavors of the sauces, meats, vegetables, wine pairings and presentations. Our server, Mary, was The food was attractively plated. Each dish was attentive right from the start. delicious. The steaks were tender, the halibut was firm and flavorful and the lasagna was a hit. Though we did Try Rob's Place, you won't regret it. Rob’s place receives not have one favorite dish between us. Friends in a consistent 4.5 stars from visitors and locals alike.

My inspirations come from being an avid gardener and many of my paintings show my love of what is produced there.

I also feel fortunate to live in such a beautiful area where I can share the delightful scenery and wildlife in the foothills and surrounding areas.

I am an active member of Arts of Bear Valley, Golden Palette Art Association, Calaveras County Arts Council and the Gallery Group. My paintings have won ribbons at the Calaveras County Fair and Lodi Grape Festival. I also received the third place award at Ironstone Vineyards 2011 Spring Obsession Professional Art Show.

By comparison, Eileen chose the Cashew Crusted Halibut coated with cashew seared served with a romesco sauce, paired with vegetables and steamed jasmine. Richard ordered Rob's Veggie Lasagna, prepared with a creamy tomato, spinach, mushroom and parmesan with mozzarella, served with salad.

My work can be seen at the Art on Main Gallery in Murphys and at other local businesses and seasonal shows in the area.
