A Not So ‘Homeric’ Odyssey

Most of my regular readers will recognize the following stretch of writing as a digression, I’m prone to them. The story from which I’ve digressed, an accurate account of the American political process is so far-fetched that it’s too hard to believe. So, I’ll just take up from where I departed . . .

In late May I lost my $1500 hearing aid in our mud-bottomed pond out here on Love Creek. I don’t remember Homer’s Odysseus having suffered such a fate, yet with no less intrepid conviction I set about the task of rescuing the ‘lil’ unit.’ I never calculated the odds, but then, heros aren’t worried about odds.

Unfortunately, I soon realized that my water buffalo technique had muddied my projected search area, an area I had calculated by triangulating the position of my lawn chair with the beached kayak and the raft in the center of the pond!

With alacrity of mind it was decided that I should swim out beyond the search area and sneak back up on the site, so as not to disturb the bottom. Let’s just say that our point man, me, looked almost nothing like a young Tahitian girl diving for pearls. Still, I took my plunge and I did make it to the bottom, but I could only stay down there for a few seconds. And, it turns out that the water is really cold down there at the bottom. Such as it was, during my short time down under I was only able to search an area about the size of a John Denver LP, and even that search was not entirely thorough. When I came back up I was embarrassingly out of breath. Undaunted, I made a second attempt, but this time I loaded up on more air. The second result was similar to the first, but I learned a few more things: most importantly, our diver was certainly no Navy SEAL– and his body tends to want to float.

Despite my concerns for the heart rate of our hero, and convinced that one more dive would yield results, I made plans for a third expedition. If I could only increase the size of my search area!

As such, I generously loaded up on all of the oxygen I could gather and made yet another plunge. This time however I suffered a moment of unfortunate timing, as about half way down I had the “Tahitian pearl diver thought” and started laughing.

My ‘second phase’ rescue attempt was made the following day.

This time I elected the use of tools, and arrived equipped with a magnet duct taped to a long pole. Convinced that my country boy ingenuity would prevail, I paddled the kayak straight to the search area, lowered my rescue apparatus to the bottom of the icy depths, and after a few minutes of methodical search . . .

Sheriff Dibasilio Promoting Department Transparency

County Sheriff, Rick Dibasilio, hosted one of a series of “Meet the Sheriff” events in Calaveras Saturday, July 23rd in Avery. The Sheriff discussed his philosophy of transparency and open communication between his office and the residents of Calaveras. He explained that he’s using the events as an opportunity to provide the communities with informal one-on-one updates on some of the more challenging aspects facing the Sheriff’s Department. It didn’t take long for it to become clear that the Department has a lot of challenges.

The number one topic on most of the minds of people attending was cannabis cultivation. The Sheriff reiterated his point that he was for regulating cannabis cultivation because cannabis will grow here one way or the other. While taking the pro-cultivation stance, Dibasilio also conceded that at present the Department doesn’t have the staff to administer to either the legally registered growers or the numerous illegal plantations popping up.

Dibasilio said that 770 people applied for permits to grow cannabis. He also estimates that there are at least 2000 grows occurring right now in the County, meaning that at least 1,230 of those grows are by folks who have not obtained a permit.

While it may seem easy for some to say “why aren’t you just going out there and chopping down plants and arresting people,” Dibasilio said, “the department just doesn’t have the staff.” The current staff is extremely limited and they need to keep those that they have ready for real emergencies.

Dibasilio added that the County will not see any major enforcement changes for at least a year, but closer to 18 months. It takes time to first attract, then hire and train the personal. Attracting personnel is currently challenging as the Calaveras Sheriff’s Department is the lowest paying Sheriff’s Department in California. Recruits can earn as much as $10 per hour more working for departments in neighboring communities. Dibasilio did say that the Department will have some assistance from the CHP during harvest periods.

The Sheriff believes that 75% of all the marijuana grown in Calaveras will most likely be shipped outside of CA. Dibasilio said that new THC extraction processing makes moving the product without being noticed relatively easy - so a presence will be required to maintain regulation and promote an atmosphere that regulated cannabis works for all of those involved.

The Sheriff’s Plan The Sheriff contends that the only way that the County can get on top of the regulation of cannabis cultivation is to fund the department by implementing legislative taxes that are specifically designated for the department.

He says he needs the funding so that the Department can meet the challenges of an influx of migrant workers and people from out of the area. One of the things he wants to do is increase the background checks on applicants from the current CA background database to a database that covers the entire country.

The Bantamweight Division in Ultimate Fighting is a strange world, and it’s very tough at the top. All of the fighters that remain significant are the ones who have redefined what is considered conventional style in cage-fighting, emphasizing their boxing or striking skills.

After having watched more than a half dozen or so of the most important recent bouts, including T.J.’s win over Raphael Assuncao, and Urijah Faber’s loss to current champion, Dominick Cruz, there is no doubt in my mind that T.J. is the legitimate number one contender.

That said, Dillashaw will still be the underdog in a rematch against Cruz for a number of valid reasons. One, Cruz is one of the best in the history of the sport. Two, Cruz just demoralized Urijah Farber who was ranked second in the division. It wasn’t even close. About midway through the second round, Cruz dropped Farber with a right hand that was so hard, I bet for a few moments Farber thought he was down there looking for a contact lens. After that, and for the foreseeable future, Farber could only back peddle and try to avoid embarrassment. More than that though, in their first fight, Cruz beat Dillashaw after having only had one fight after a long absence from the sport; although, he didn’t look the least bit rusty. Still, it’s pretty evident that Dominick Cruz is better now than he was when he took the belt from T.J.

As the former Champ, T.J. deserves a rematch with Cruz, especially since Dillashaw only relinquished the title to Cruz after losing a seriously controversial split decision to him in Jan. Plus, T.J. out classed T. J. Supporting the Red Dirt Gold Dust Music Festival!

Angels Camp– There are only a few foods in this world that reach the pinnacle of esteem where as they might be called ‘primal,’ one is the Chile Relleno. So important is it to the hierarchy of gastronomy that I have searched some the world’s strangest places looking for the perfect Relleno. As it is with most good things, the perfect Relleno is hard to come by– they’re pretty hard to cook. I personally have never cooked the perfect Relleno. In my life there have only been three perfect Rellenos. One in Mexico, One in San Francisco, and the other, once upon a time, believe it or not, could be found in Arnold.

There are a number of factors that go into the perfect Relleno. As the dish originated in the city of Puebla, it has to have a fresh Poblano pepper with the stem still attached! The innards need to be filled with a melted ‘interesting’ cheese like asadero or asiago and the egg batter has to taste super fresh! Here in the Empire, Rellenos are typically served with a red sauce– with a hint of sweet.

The new Mexican restaurant in Angels Camp, Angels Mexican Kitchen, does all of the above. I can’t speak to the rest of menu, yet, but their Relleno probably makes my top-ten lifetime list. Look for them on the right as you’re heading towards Middleton’s. Ross says check it out!

Murphys– The Murphys Homecoming Bocce Tourney was

an incredible success, well over 150 people attended (40 players). The little hill was filled with local folks cheering on their favorites– Bocce is not for the silent. Plus, the tournament raised some needed funding for the courts!

First Round: On Court 1 6pm: Carole Depaoli & Carol Hogan came from behind to capture Court #1. Barbara & Steve Soper won the wine bottle roll off.

On Court 2 6pm: The team from Forrest Meadows, Tom Farrish & Mike Miller won. Chris and Ali Schofield wanted to win the wine bottles in the roll off, and they did.

On Court 1 7pm: "Boccie Buddies" JoAnna & Bob Reagan prevailed, the hillside went nuts. Greg & John won the wine roll off which included Bertapelle wines.

On Court 2 7pm: Joe & Lori Bauer easily won that court.

Jim & Yvonne Heryford came for the wine!

The crowd was really coming to life by the 7pm flight. The marshals reportedly had to haul Dave Bowman off to the pokey.

The Finals: It was kind of like a Dodger game ~ the crowd started to thin out towards the end. The four teams in the finals were: Carole & Carol, Bob & JoAnna, Tom & Mike and Joe & Lori Bauer. The finals didn’t last long, there was no stopping Joe & Lori Bauer. It was getting close to Joe’s bed time. Joe & Lori are the first Champions of the Murphys Homecoming Bocce Tournament!!

Popular Park & Museum Grappling With Difficult Choice!?!

ARNOLD- Dave Gallagher drives a small yard tractor in a lazy circle making sure every blade of grass is whacked on the edge of White Pines Lake, preparing for a busy weekend.

He is a volunteer with the White Pines Park Committee that is the all-volunteer force that maintains the park for locals and visitors to enjoy.

“I used to pick up a little trash when I was out here fishing,” indicated Gallagher when asked how he got involved in volunteering with the Park committee. “After one particularly busy weekend, the ‘real’ volunteers were out here until 10pm picking up garbage one night and I realized they needed more help.”

Because Calaveras County has no formal Parks and Recreation program in this unincorporated corner of the county, parks like White Pines and the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum depend on countless hours by volunteers to pick up trash, clean restrooms, replenish beach sand and maintain the facilities and keep the area open for all to enjoy.

Currently, Jenny Kafka acts as President for both areas and is seeking new volunteers to step in and help keep the facilities vibrant and inviting. The group is grappling with whether they can even keep the doors open on the museum unless additional volunteers step up.

“We don’t really have a money problem right now given the generosity of many of our community sponsorss. In fact, we were even able to buy the tractor to help Dave be more efficient with maintenance because of local fundraising,” said Kafka. “We have a volunteer shortage. The park is just too popular for us to keep up with.”

New Saturday Bus Service Launched!

Murphys business owner Kerry Keeney of His&Hers is enthusiastic about the service. “I am excited that Calaveras residents and tourists to the county will be able to arrive in Murphys, shop locally, visit wineries, attend local events and eat at restaurants conveniently using a fun way to travel.”

The main stops are located at parking lots for passenger convenience. Buses will travel in both directions about every 90 minutes. The first bus will leave Valley Springs at 10:30am and the last bus will leave Murphys at 6:30pm.

Fares are the same as for the weekday fixed route service: $2 base for one-way travel, plus twenty five cent zone fares due at San Andreas and Angels Camp. The base fare is $1 for people 65 years and older and for eligible persons with a disability. Purchase tickets in advance or pay the drivers with exact change.

Calaveras County residents and visitors have a new bus route and a worry free way to appreciate the various attractions and destinations from Valley Springs to Murphys.

Opening festivities on Sat. July 23rd included a ribbon cutting ceremonies at each stop on the first run of the day, including the 11:23am stop at the Visitor Center in Angels Camp with Mayor Wes Kulm.

Planners and businesses are looking forward to the service that will connect Calaveras communities with easy Saturday travel opportunities. “This is a great opportunity to get people to downtown Angels Camp. People from WorldMark and Greenhorn Creek want to get to Angels Camp without driving.” David Hanham, Planning Director for the City of Angels Camp, said.

Set in two milk cans in front of historic barn, this plaque serves as a lasting tribute to the barn and its history as part of the county hospital.

According to a local newspaper dated November 23, 1923, this is a description of the County Hospital Barn: A commodious barn, housing the hay, dairy stock, and implents is another of the buildings on the hospital grounds.

A dairy herd of 7 head of milk cows is at present maintained.

Poultry is raised on the premises and so are hogs.

In addition to the 28-acre tract on which are located the several buildings comprising the institutional scheme, there are 80 acres additional given over to pasturage of alfalfa, hay and oats.

Popular in the 1850s, E Clampus Vitus membership peaked in the 1870s and then declined until only one lodge remained in 1915. The organization was revitalized in the early 1930s, and today the ECV operates as a “fraternal brotherhood, dedicated to historic preservation.”

Several acres of this tract were this year planted to fruit, the trees being now six months old and making most favorable headway. Six young heifers, in addition to the dairy herd, are pastured here.

While the Clampers, as they are more commonly known, are still inclined to have a ‘good time’ at their activities, they also are philanthropic. Recently, they donated $1500 to the Butte Fire recovery. The Matuca Chapter, encompassing Mariposa, Tuolumne, and Calaveras Counties, is one of the largest chapters.

Joseph Zumwalt, who left Kentucky to eventually settle in California in 1849, is credited with bringing the E Clampus Vitus ritual to California during the Gold Rush.

Accent Plants Enhance Bonsai Displays Ray’Mona Cunha of Ione will demonstrate the use of accent plants as companions to displayed bonsai trees at the next Mother Lode Bonsai Club meeting. “Why accent plants? They add aesthetically to bonsai compositions,” she said.

For the past nine years, Cunha has extended her love of plants, in general, to bonsai, or miniature trees grown in pots. “Along with cultivating and styling bonsai, another important feature is the ability to attractively show them off,” she said. “An accent plant should enhance your bonsai but not take away from the main focus, the tree itself.” As such, she will recommend which ones will work or not work, and why.

Ray’Mona Cunha is a former president of the Amador Bonsai Society, having served also as their vice president and treasurer prior. She has won numerous awards for her entries at the Amador County Fair.

“The thing about bonsai, “Ray’Mona said, “is that there is always room for one more.”

In fact, her ever-expanding collection currently has over a hundred trees. A number of her accent plants will be available for purchase at the meeting.

Cunha’s presentation will follow the club’s monthly meeting on Saturday, August 6, which starts at 10am at the Oak Shadows Mobile Home Park Clubhouse, 1330 Calaveritas Road in San Andreas.

My search for the lost hearing aid continued during the month of June. To say that I mourned the loss of my hearing aid, “the lil’ unit,” would be overstating the case. In actuality, searching for the thing gave me something to do while I was at the pond.

COSTCO has a great hearing aid policy: they give you one major repair and one replacement of a lost hearing aid as part of the purchase. Still, as much as anything, I just wanted to find something that I had lost. With the summer starting to swing into full-season, and with the lake warming, I continued to put off a trip to COSTCO to replace the aid, thinking I’d eventually rescue the little chicken liver.

It looks like a chicken liver, I swear to god, or the entrails of something my dog might roll on. As such, I’d taken to using it as a prop for making dramatic points during debate. I’d just grab the thing out of my ear and slap it down on the dinner table, and while it quivered there, startling some and horrifying others, I’d utter some comment about the general net-worth of my opposition’s perspective– not unlike Khrushchev and his shoe.

It was really effective right up until it backfired on me, when a person of no less moral fortitude replied in kind with an even uglier aid! Reduced to nausea, I conceded my point.

Meanwhile, I was spending the summer in a rather relaxing state of sensory deprivation, thinking up ironic replies to inquires directed at me that I couldn’t hear. Some quotes fit almost all occasions. If the grocery bagger looks at you like you just got out of the asylum, simply quote Mick Jagger: “Anarchy is our only slight glimmer of hope.”

Finally, in mid-July, one of my friends couldn’t take my continued abuse of the non sequitur any longer and convinced me to pick up the new aid. In exasperation he uttered a profound statement, one I feel should be taken up as the official Democratic Party Platform, “It’s not just about you, what about us?”

Reluctantly, I called Christine at COSTCO, she is great. If you’re having hearing trouble I’ve no hesitation recommending to anyone that they at least visit Christine, her testing equipment is better than most ear, nose and trout specialists, and their prices are reasonable.

During my call she ordered me up a new “Bernafon Juna.” The Juna is designed to work with an iPhone and I might add, comes in a stunning cobalt blue– a color far superior to the flesh of a chicken. (I thought about asking her if they had one that might glow in the dark, or one that had a built-in flight recorder or black box underwater beacon locator– but I didn’t want Christine to think I’d come unhinged.) She said it would take a few days to get a replacement.

In the interim, everything was quiet, too quiet. On my birthday, I had a fantastic breakfast at Susie’s Diner in Arnold - the egg breakfast with sausage and hash browns, with a half-order of biscuits and gravy. Following which, I decided to have another ‘look-see’ for the aid. At the pond I scrambled down to the edge and inspected the search area, again.

Aerial surveillance had a net zero gain, so I retrieved my abandoned magnet from the bushes and engaged in a few minutes of submerged dredging and mud stirring. I noticed a few lawn chairs and the kayak were in disarray, so I returned the magnet to it’s place of concealment and spent a few minutes righting the deck chairs. I took one last look at the pond before heading out and I noticed a strange looking leaf on the bottom of the pond about three feet out from the edge. With no real sense of conviction, more muscle-memory- dedication, I retrieved the magnet from its resting spot and dredged the area of the odd looking leaf, instantly stirring up a bunch of muck. The patterns of my muck stirring were somewhat intriguing, but I soon lost interest and clambered back up the bank. That is when I noticed it. Clinging to the magnet, hiding underneath another strange looking leaf, and looking like a naked little gnome was the lil’ unit! I was stunned and in a state of disbelief– I had rescued him!

Why am I telling you all of this? Mainly: When I was reflecting back upon having lost and then finding the lil’ unit, I had a small epiphany about the mysteriousness of life. If, and this is a big “if,” if our adventures are supposed to teach us something, my hearing aid episode adds to my suspicion that not unlike Homer’s Odysseus returning home from the Trojan War, the gods will find ways to amuse themselves with us while we saunter along in our delusions of grandeur.

Requiem for a Cat: When Death Comes David Alford

Dad’s death was far easier at the end. He had acquired Parkinson’s, and the meds put him in la-la land for the last year or so. He was 90. I received a call when I was away, “Your dad just died,” at home in his bed. He just ‘petered out’ as he often said about somebody.

Needless to say, I could write long memoirs about my parents, as we all could.

The first death in my life, I guess, was Bambi’s mother when I was a little kid. I was inconsolable even though it was just an image on a screen. The gap between reality and fantasy at that age wasn’t very great.

We Are All Just Works In Progress Jim Stearns

I’ve often contended that memory has more to do with intensity than it does with time. It’s an easy argument in one sense. Who indeed doesn’t remember something dramatic or traumatic that happened decades ago more vividly than something like what we had for breakfast yesterday.

It gets a little dicier when we start getting into the hundreds of thousands or millions of interactions we have in our individual lives. Interestingly enough, an encounter or conversation that two or more people shared might have a profound impact on one of those participants for life, and the others forgot it even happened a day or even an hour later. I’ve been stunned by people telling me something I might have said in passing years or even decades later that affected them either in a positive or negative way. Of course the same is true for me. The memory of a look on someone’s face or something they said that either touched me deeply, one way or another, or revealed something unsettling or inspiring about that individual’s character or lack thereof.

An off color joke, a cold response to someone in need, an anecdote that centers around amusement regarding the suffering of another being even a bug or an animal, any number of facial expressions, words with subtle inflections or intonations all reveal much. How the information that we gather is interpreted and internalized regarding those relationships and interactions is entirely subjective. Was I in a bad mood in a particular encounter? Did I bring an element of prejudice regarding a certain person based upon previous history or something that I heard about someone from another?

I’ve always heard and believed that you don’t find out who someone is until you’re in a literal or figurative foxhole with them. It’s easy to sail together on a breezy, relatively calm, clear day. What happens when the storm arrives? We find out about those we counted on, and those that counted on us, find out about us.

There was a viral video a few years back that showed four puberty age boys hanging around a relaxed and seemingly docile tiger. Without warning, in lightning speed, the tiger grabbed the arm of the boy nearest his mouth. The reaction of the three friends was instant and telling. One boy went right for the face and tried to pry the jaws of the tiger off his friend. One boy started slugging the tiger on the side and the third boy took the shirt from around his waist and while leaning back a few feet away, waved the shirt at the tiger’s tail, barely touching it.

Which guy would I be in that situation? Hopefully, I would take some degree of risk to help my endangered friend. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be the shirt waver, but can we really know how we’re going to react instantaneously in a crisis?

We’ve all read stories about the heroics and selflessness of those who sacrificed themselves to save others, those who took great risks or even paid the ultimate price. Would I be the guy to fall on the grenade if it was rolled into a large group where I was standing? Highly doubtful, but perhaps if that room was full of my children and others that I loved, I might.

I wrote a column years back about my “Banana slug theory.”

A budding relationship was essentially over the minute my girlfriend reacted to a banana slug on a mountain trail as if she were being attacked by the Zodiac Killer. I’ve let friendships go based upon reaction or the failure of a reaction to a certain situations that demanded what I deemed a different or at least more reasonable response. If someone doesn’t want to get their new shoes muddy to pull somebody out of a burning car in a ditch, I’d prefer not to spend a lot of energy on that person.

One of my favorite anecdotes about a jaw dropping and utterly revealing conversation happened more than 20-yearsago, but I remember it vividly to this day. Perhaps others that were there forgot about it the next day, the next hour, or the next minute, but it stuck with me through all these years like a movie, or a book. We each are individually shaped and affected by our experiences. A woman, who will/shall remain nameless, a very beautiful and successful woman, told a few of us at a gathering a story that revealed an insight into her personality. She said that she had been invited by a man who she was extremely interested in to take an allexpenses paid trip to Paris. She said she was inclined to turn it down. When asked why she explained in great detail: “Well, if I go to Paris with him, I might get in an accident.

If I get in an accident, I might have to go to the hospital. If I go to the hospital, I might have to get a blood transfusion.

If I get a blood transfusion, I might get AIDS.” This was a time when France wasn’t screening their blood for AIDS as effectively as the U.S. I wonder now if she thinks about some of her decisions and their consequential outcomes.

Yes, one sentence, one story, one joke or one reaction can tell us more about those around us or ourselves than we might even want to know. We can pretend, but when push comes to shove we are who we are and we’ll be who we’ll be. Each of us remains a perpetual work in progress. There may be a few rest stops and reprieves along the way; but ultimately, there is no choice but to get up and keep going.

Tomorrow is our saving grace. We can’t push rewind, put the toothpaste back in the tube, unsay or undo what’s been said or done, but all of us will surely have another chance at the tiger (or that trip to Paris). And like the shirt-waving kid, we can only hope that maybe next time we’ll handle ourselves with a bit more grace and aplomb.

Boating Safety ~ A New Mandate In California Steve Shields

fellow adventurers!

In these dog days of summer who doesn’t enjoying a day of boating on your favorite body of water?

Relaxing and refreshing, right? It turns out that California is the second most dangerous state for boating, just behind Florida, so says the USCG who collects statistics on such matters.

Well, the California State Senate has a solution for that - welcome Senate Bill 941 (SB941) which will require all motorized vessel operators to pass a Boating Safety Course and obtain a California Vessel Operator Card (CVOC). This new requirement will be phased in over several years starting on January 1, 2018 through 2025 with younger boaters to be inducted first into the new card carrying club. Other states have enacted similar regulations, so California is following suit.

A first aid kit is also a must. Boats should be outfitted with navigation lights if operated at night. Carry an illumination device just in case you find yourself stranded on the water in the dark. Spare dry clothing might come in handy for a crew overboard situations.

On large bodies of water, carrying an emergency raft and ‘ditch kit’ with emergency supplies can save your life.

Safety Briefing – While emergency procedures may be obvious to the operator, most passengers may not have a clue. It is the responsibility of the vessel operator (skipper) to brief the crew of emergency procedures as well as where safety equipment is located on the vessel. Do this upon boarding.

Life Jackets– I can emphatically tell you that personal floatation devices Photo Courtesy of The U.S. Coast (PFDs) or commonly known as “life jackets” absolutely save lives! It is More bureaucracy? Perhaps, but it will be California law that you carry USCG approved PFD’s for all much like hunter safety training in that it will provide basic passengers on all recreational vessels, motorized or not (yes education of boating safety and regulations before jumping including canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, rafts, and sailboats). blindly in a watercraft and zooming off with your buddies. Below are a few boating safety tips I’ve paraphrased from BoatUS Foundation (with permission), the ABC’s of CA Boating as well as a few statistics informed by the State of California.

Boating Safety Tips: Pre-Inspection– Inspect your vessel before launching and don’t forget the drain plug! Use a check list.

Float Plan– Leaving a “float Plan” with a buddy onshore will help ensure a rapid response if you don’t return on time. Also check the local forecast before you head out. In some areas, a marine forecast will be available.

Safety Equipment – Be sure to carry the required items. Fires on a boat, like on planes, are very scary situations. Carry a triclass (ABC) fire extinguisher. Also carry day and night visual distress signals (flares work for both).

Alcohol– Nearly half of all accidents involve alcohol. The blood alcohol limit for operating a watercraft is the same as that of operating a motor vehicle. It’s the same law on land or on water.

Crew Overboard (CoB) - It happens, in fact falling overboard is one of the top categories for fatalities. Interestingly, peeing off the side of the boat is a big cause of ‘man’ overboard.

Always maintain three points of contact as you never know when rough water may jostle the boat and send you swimming!

The skipper (driver) should always be aware of nearby traffic and approaching wakes to alert passengers. The operator is legally responsible for crew safety.

Carbon Monoxide– Swimming behind transom (rear of boat) near the exhaust while the engine is running is inviting disaster. Many hapless victims have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning this way. Symptoms can mimic being drunk. Also beware of the propeller at all times, especially when entering/exiting the water!

Communications – Have some sort of communications device to call for assistance. Cell phones work in heavily populated areas (911). In larger bodies of water, purchase a marine radio as the USCG and other vessel operators monitor VHF Ch 16.

many locals is Galen and Katryn Weston’s Blue Oak Farms Fruit Stand on Parrots Ferry Road, on the way towards Columbia and Sonora. They have an incredible variety of peaches, with each variety ripening at different times. They are open on Wednesdays during the peach season. You will see their sign out on the road indicating they are open. The Galen’s also email their peach loving clients notifications of what variety of peaches will be available at the fruit stand. These sweet and delectable treasures are the taste of sunshine.

Enjoy peaches in a fresh peach pie, grilled peaches wrapped in bacon, peach cobbler, preserves, peach ice cream, peach salsa, and the list goes on. Galen and Katryn recommend this recipe from one of their favorite peach-loving clients, Claire St. John.

Peach Upside Down Cake Ingredients Topping 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter 1/3 cup granulated sugar 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar 1 pound ripe peaches, pitted and cut into 3/4-inch thick slices Cake 1 1/4 cups cake flour (not self-rising) 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. grated nutmeg 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs, room temperature 1/3 cup milk 1/2 tsp. almond extract 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract Whipped cream for garnish (optional, but recommended!)

Directions: Place oven rack in lowest position; heat oven to 350 degrees F.

To Make The Topping: Melt butter in a 9- or 10-inch castiron skillet; brush butter up sides of skillet to coat. Add sugars, crumbling brown sugar; cook, stirring over medium heat until mixture bubbles and looks creamy and smooth, 2 to 3 minutes.

You can use a cake pan instead of a skillet, just cook the topping in a separate pan and pour into a cake pan.

Remove skillet from heat, arrange peach slices on top of butter mixture in a spiral pattern, starting in the center.

Cake: Mix flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a medium bowl until blended. In a large bowl with a mixer on medium speed, beat butter and sugar until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the eggs one at a time until blended. On low speed, beat in half of the flour mixture, milk, extracts then the remaining flour mixture until batter is smooth.

Spoon batter into skillet and using a spatula, gently spread batter over peaches in an even layer to reach the sides of the skillet or cake pan. Bake 35 to 40 minutes, until top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Let cool in skillet or pan on a rack for 10 minutes or longer.

Run a knife around the edge. Invert a serving plate over top of skillet. Using oven mitts, invert cake onto platter and replace any peach slices that stick. Serve warm or at room temperature with whipped cream.

Larry's start in photography began about 40 years ago when he bought his first 35mm film camera. Larry really enjoyed black and white photography that was inspired by Ansel Adams and his techniques and learned to process both film and prints in a home darkroom from many trips to Yosemite and the Sierra Foothills. He also started shooting with some 2-1/4 inch and 4x5 inch medium format cameras. He sold or put away most of his equipment when he started a family and raised two daughters in the late 1970s.

Several years ago Larry retired and wanted to start taking photos again. Rather than pick up where he left off, he wanted to experiment with new equipment and techniques. Larry bought his first digital camera and started processing the images on his computer at home and sending them out to a lab for printing. Larry still loves Yosemite and the Sierra Foothills but also enjoys macro (close-up) photography of flowers and other things that sometimes go unnoticed.

Larry is an award winning photographer, and has been exhibited at the Adobe Gallery, Palomares Cafe, The Kenneth Aitken Community Center, Baywood Senior Center and Bank of the West in Castro Valley, PhotoCentral in Hayward, the Prestidge Gallery in Angels Camp and the Hovey Wines tasting room in Murphys.

Larry has taken home the “Best of Show” award in the professional photography division at the Calaveras County Fair in 2014 and 2015 and his photograph, "Bridge Reflection," taken at Russian Gulch State Park was selected by the California State Parks Foundation to be included in its 2016 calendar. His work is in private collections all over the United States and is currently on display at "Art on Main" and the Broll Mountain Vineyards Tasting Room in Murphys, California.

The Emporium offers educational lectures, writing and art workshops, cultural and writer’s meetings, music classes, storytelling, and conferences. This fundraiser will help Manzanita to keep these community programs and services flowing.

Habitat Returns For Its 12th Year!

the 12th annual Hoedown for Habitat on Saturday, August 27. The venue is Murphys Park where cowgirls, cowboys, and anyone else who enjoys fine food, music for listening and dancing, a silent auction, a raffle and more are guaranteed a good time. The event will take place from 4 to 9pm.

Starting the evening’s entertainment is The Fiddle Gang strolling through the park as you arrive and have dinner. The Fiddle Gang is made up of youngsters from Tuolumne County 6 to 14 years old playing foot stompin’ music and even stopping to do a little singing.

Served from 5 to 6pm, is a barbeque dinner of tri-tip and chicken prepared by volunteers headed by chef Shawn Robertson, with delicious pasta, beans and salads prepared by Jim Stickney and friends.

While listening to live music provided by Crystal Image, guests can help themselves to an array of scrumptious desserts prepared by Habitat Board members and volunteers. Then dance the night away as Crystal Image plays your favorite songs.

The Habitat Saloon, our no-host bar opens at 4 p.m. and serves thirsty guests throughout the evening. Our refreshments feature local wines, beer, soft drinks and water. While sipping a beverage, you can check out the silent auction items and raffle prizes that have been donated by local businesses and individuals.

Adult tickets are: $25 in advance or $35 at the park; tickets for children ages 6 to 12 are: $7 in advance or $15 at the park; children five and under are free.
