THE vistula RIVER

Wisła to rzeka wyjątkowa. Najdłuższa w Polsce, jedna z najdłuższych w Europie. Liczy 1022 km i płynie przez cały kraj, od gór na południu do morza na północy.

Wzdłuż niej, niczym barwne paciorki nanizane na nić, położone są miejsca ważne dla polskiej historii i kultury.

Wisła widziała niejedno i pojawia się w wielu legendach.

To prawdziwa królowa polskich rzek i jak na królową przystało, rządzi się sama: pozostaje w większości dzika, nieuregulowana. To sprawia, że jej brzegi to dom dla rozmaitych roślin i zwierząt. Liczne obszary chronione utworzone wzdłuż Wisły to prawdziwy raj dla miłośników przyrody.

The Vistula is special. It’s the longest river in Poland and one of the longest in Europe. It stretches for 1022 kilometres across our country, linking the mountainous south of the country with the Baltic coast to the north.

Along its banks, like multi-colour beads on a string, you’ll find places famous in Polish history and culture. The Vistula has witnessed a lot and features in many a legend. It is the true queen of Polish rivers and, like a queen, sets its own rules, remaining wild and unregulated along most of its course.

Thanks to that, the Vistula’s shores provide a refuge for many plants and animals, while its many protected areas are a paradise for nature lovers.

You’ll discover plenty of the Vistula’s treasures over the next 15 illustrations of this booklet. The pictures are yours to colour, and on the overleaf you’ll find stories, tips, and fun facts.

Along the way, you will also encounter many surprises and fun activities.

The pages of this booklet can also be cut out (just follow the dashed lines) and placed next to each other in numerical order.

If you do so, you will get a panorama of the whole length of the river. Just remember to leave enough space, since the Vistula is very long!

Gotowi? Start! Wisła rozpoczyna swoją wędrówkę na południu Polski, w Beskidzie Śląskim. Tu, spod Baraniej Góry, tryska źródło, które zanim przemieni się w rzekę, płynie przez górskie lasy i pastwiska. Owce beczą, góral głośno gra na dudach, w wodzie skaczą pstrągi, a pod chmurami – kolejne pokolenia świetnych skoczków narciarskich. Mnóstwo wrażeń gwarantowanych!

Jedna z owiec chyba też postanowiła rozpocząć karierę sportową – na pewno ją rozpoznasz!

Ready, steady, go! The Vistula begins its journey in southern Poland, in a mountain range called the Silesian Beskids. Here, a small stream springs from the slopes of Barania Góra and trickles through alpine forests and pastures before swelling into a broad river. Sheep bleat in their pastures, a Highlander plays screechy bagpipes, trout splash about in the rippling water, and several generations of fantastic ski jumpers soar high above. You won’t be bored!

Looks like one of the sheep is trying its luck in sports. Bet you can guess who!

Wpływamy do Krakowa, dawnej stolicy Polski. Na Wawelskim wzgórzu stoi majestatyczny stary zamek, który przez wieki był siedzibą polskich królów. Zaś pod wzgórzem według legendy mieszkał… okrutny smok! Z potworem rozprawił się pewien sprytny szewczyk, podsuwając mu na obiad barana nafaszerowanego siarką.

Jeśli dziś w Krakowie żyje jakiś nowy smok, to na pewno czuwa nad miastem i żywi się wyłącznie krakowskimi obwarzankami. I każdej nocy sprawdza czy wszystko w porządku. Tak jak to robiono kiedyś, wypatrując z wieży nadciągającego wroga. Do dziś upamiętnia to hejnał grany na trąbce o każdej pełnej godzinie wprost z wieży Kościoła Mariackiego. A Lajkonik? Tak jak i tamten okrutny smok, dziś ta kolorowa, brodata postać na koniku jest tylko wspomnieniem dawnych najeźdźców.

Po tradycjach królewskich zostało wiele pamiątek – wypatrz ukrytą koronę oraz flagę polski.

We arrive in Kraków, Poland’s former capital. The majestic old castle which towers over Wawel Hill for centuries served as the seat of the Polish kings. Legend has it that at the foot of the hill there lived… a cruel dragon! The beast was slain by a clever cobbler, who tricked it into eating a ram stuffed with sulphur. If a new dragon is to be found in Kraków now, it surely watches over the city and dines on a local delicacy called obwarzanki krakowskie, a sort of crunchy pretzel. In keeping with tradition, the creature makes its rounds every night, just to check that everything is alright. Back in the day, a city watchman would be stationed at the top of the highest church steeple to keep a sharp lookout for any approaching enemy. To this day, this custom is commemorated by a trumpet call resounding straight from the tower of Saint Mary’s Church every hour on the hour. And what about Lajkonik? Just like the cruel dragon, this bearded man riding a horse evokes memories of invaders from long ago.

Wisła płynie przez całą Polskę, łącząc góry z morzem. Przez wieki korzystano więc z niej jak z wygodnego wodnego szlaku: spławiano drewno, na tratwach przewożono zboże, sól i inne dobra. Zajmowali się tym flisacy. Każdego roku po ustąpieniu zimy ruszali w podróż z nurtem rzeki. Niejedna młoda panna oddała swoje serce flisakowi, a potem wyczekiwała powrotu ukochanego. W noc świętojańską, tę najkrótszą w roku, gdy wiosna spotyka się z latem, na brzegach rzeki skakano przez ogniska, a w lasach szukano czarodziejskiego kwiatu paproci. Dziewczęta wiły wianki i rzucały je na wodę. Kto złowił taki wianek, miał zostać mężem tej panny, która go uplotła.

Wygląda na to, że wraz z wiankami nurtem rzeki spływa coś z poprzedniego obrazka… Kto to wyłowi, temu się poszczęści w poszukiwaniach kwiatu paproci!

The Vistula flows through whole country of Poland, from the mountains to the sea. For centuries, that made it a convenient waterway to raft timber and transport wheat, salt and other merchandise. This was the raftsmen’s job. Every year, after winter gave way to spring, they would embark on a journey downriver.

Many young ladies gave their hearts to raftsmen, to later await their return. On Saint John’s Eve, the shortest night of the year, when spring meets summer, people would jump over bonfires lit near the river and look for the blossom of a magical fern in the woods. Girls would weave flowers into garlands and throw them to the water.

The boy who managed to catch this floral crown was supposed to get married to the girl who made it.

It seems there is something from the previous page floating down the river along with the floral crowns… Whoever catches it will be lucky in their search for the fern blossom!

Kazimierz Dolny to malownicze zabytkowe miasteczko lubiane przez artystów. Co roku odbywa się tutaj Festiwal Kapel i Śpiewaków Ludowych. Zjeżdżają na niego z muzyką twórcy ze wszystkich zakątków Polski. Kogo tu nie ma! Po lewej, na bębenku gra pani w stroju łowickim. Po środku, na skrzypcach złóbcokach gra chłopiec w stroju podhalańskim. Pan po prawej nosi strój biłgorajski i gra na lirze korbowej. Znajdzie się też coś dla początkujących – na glinianym koguciku uda się zagwizdać każdemu. A na tych, którzy już nie mają ochoty grać, czekają ozdobne koguty z ciasta. Kukuryku!

Na pewno od razu wypatrzysz na ilustracji gdzie udać się po gliniane koguciki!

Kazimierz Dolny is a picturesque, historic town favoured by artists.

Every year, it hosts a Folk Music Festival that attracts singers and musicians from all over Poland. What a crowd! On the left, you can see a woman playing the drum wearing a traditional Łowicz regional costume. In the middle, there’s a boy in Podhale mountaineer garb playing a fiddle called the złóbcoki. On the right, you will find a man wearing Biłgoraj clothing and playing the hurdy-gurdy. But we also have instruments for beginners. Anybody can blow this clay whistle shaped like a rooster. And if you don’t feel like playing anymore, what about some bread baked in the shape of a rooster? Cock-a-doodle-do!

Po obydwu stronach Wisły rozciągają się rozległe pola i sady.

A tam w słońcu dojrzewa mnóstwo pysznych owoców! Spośród nich najsłynniejsze na całym świecie są polskie jabłka, maliny i truskawki.

Kto choć raz ich spróbował – świeżych lub w postaci przetworów – wie już jak smakuje prawdziwe polskie lato!

Szczypawka jest nieszkodliwa, ale lepiej ją znajdź zanim kogoś wystraszy!

Stretching away on each side of the Vistula, you will find vast fields and orchards laden with delicious fruit ripening in the sun.

Polish apples, raspberries, and strawberries are popular all around the world. Whoever has tasted them just once, whether fresh or preserved, knows the taste of a true Polish summer.

You know earwigs are harmless, but please find one before it scares somebody!

Nad brzegami Wisły można przyjemnie odpocząć: jest miejsce na rower, wędrówki i hamak. Blisko Warszawy, w okolicy Otwocka, rosną lasy pełne sosen. Kiedyś przyjeżdżano tu na modne letniska.

Drewniane wille dekorowano misternymi ornamentami wycinanymi w drewnie. Wiele z tych pięknych domów można tam zobaczyć do dziś. Na przeciwległym, lewym brzegu Wisły nie rosną co prawda dokładnie takie drzewa jak na obrazku, ale właśnie takie wzory dawniej haftowano w okolicach Wilanowa – kiedyś wsi, a dziś dzielnicy Warszawy.

Poszukaj w lesie grzybów. Włóż je do koszyka wyłącznie jeśli masz pewność, że są jadalne.

The Vistula shore is a great place to relax. There’s plenty of room for a bike ride, a walk, or a quick snooze in a hammock. The area around Otwock, just south of Warsaw, is full of pine forests. It was once a popular summer spa whose wooden villas with intricate, hand-carved ornaments nestled under pines and firs. Many of these beautiful houses can be admired to this day. On the opposite bank, you won’t find trees looking like the ones in the picture—but they exactly resemble patterns seen in the traditional embroidery from Wilanów—once a village and now a district of Warsaw.

Let’s go mushroom hunting in the forest. But please, only put them in the basket if you are sure they’re edible!

Bocian biały white stork

Mazowsze to centralny region Polski, przez który przepływa Wisła. Chyba trudno o bardziej charakterystyczny polski krajobraz: przydrożne wierzby, pola uprawne, łąki pełne chabrów i maków, a wśród nich stojący na jednej nodze bocian biały z długim czerwonym dziobem. Taki pejzaż musiał nosić w sercu Fryderyk Chopin, wybitny polski kompozytor. Urodził się w Żelazowej Woli na Mazowszu, a wakacje w dzieciństwie spędzał właśnie na wsi.

Wspomnienia tych szczęśliwych lat Chopin zamieniał w muzykę, którą dziś grają pianiści na całym świecie.

Według ludowych podań w dziuplach spróchniałych wierzb lubi się ukrywać niesforny diabełek Rokita. Znajdź figlarza!

Mazovia is Poland’s central region, sliced in two by the Vistula River.

It’s hard to imagine a more typical Polish landscape. Willows grow by the roadside, the fields and meadows are full of cornflowers and poppies, and a white stork with its long red beak stands in the middle, perched on one leg. This must have been the landscape Poland’s genius composer, Fryderyk Chopin, had inscribed in his heart. Chopin was born in Mazovia at Żelazowa Wola, he used to spend his summer holidays in the countryside as a child. He turned happy memories from his youth into music, now played by pianists all over the world.

Folk tales say the prankster demon Rokita lives in the hollow trunks of old willow trees. See if you can find him!

Jak mówi legenda, dawno temu w nurtach rzeki Wisły mieszkała przecudna syrena – pół kobieta, pół ryba. Co wieczór pięknie śpiewała przy księżycu, ale niektórzy ludzie bali się jej, bo była inna, nie pojawiała się za dnia i powiadano, że rzuca czary. Pewnej nocy rybacy podstępem schwytali syrenę w sieci i zamknęli w szopie, żeby następnego ranka zawieźć ją na sąd. Na szczęście młody chłopak pełniący wartę dał się przekonać prośbom syreny i wypuścił ją na wolność. Czy to dlatego, że rzuciła na niego zaklęcie? A może po prostu miał dobre serce i zrozumiał, że nad Wisłą może się znaleźć miejsce dla rozmaitych istot?

Może to właśnie potomkowie tamtego chłopaka założyli potem gród zwany Warszawą i umieścili w jego herbie postać syrenki. Dawniej przedstawiano ją z ptasimi łapami i skrzydłami nietoperza, później jedynie z rybim ogonem. Ale zawsze syrenka dzierży tarczę i miecz, gotowa do obrony swojego miasta. Nie wierzysz? Spójrz na pomnik syrenki ze Starego Miasta w Warszawie, narysowany na odwrocie kolejnej karty.

Syrenka niestety nie obroni cię przed komarami, których latem pełno nad wodą.

Za to ty możesz jej pomóc strzec porządku na brzegach jej ukochanej Wisły.

Znajdź śmiecia i natychmiast wyrzuć go do kosza!

Legend has it that once upon a time, an astonishing mermaid—halfwoman, half-fish—lived in the waters of the Vistula. Every night, she would sing beautifully in the moonlight, but people were afraid of her because she was different. She was never seen during the day and rumour had it that she could cast spells. One night, fishermen used a trick to catch the mermaid in their net and locked her in a shed to put her on a trial the next morning. Luckily, a young man who stood watch heeded the mermaid’s pleas and set her free. Did she cast a spell on him or was he simply kind-hearted? Maybe he realised the Vistula’s banks could host diverse creatures. Perhaps it was his descendants who later founded the town of Warsaw and chose a mermaid for its coat of arms. At first, she was depicted with bird legs and bat wings, and only later did the city symbol acquire a fish tail. But the mermaid always carried a shield and a sword, ready to defend her city. You don’t believe it?

Unfortunately, the mermaid won’t defend you against mosquitoes, of which there are plenty near the water in the summertime. But you can help her keep the banks of her beloved Vistula tidy. Find a piece of rubbish and put it in the bin!

9.

Wraz z Wisłą wpływamy do Warszawy, stolicy Polski. Taki niezwykły widok zobaczycie tylko tutaj: po jednej stronie brzeg rzeki jest uregulowany i piętrzą się nad nim nowoczesne budynki centrum miasta, muzea i zabytki. Wystarczy jednak przeprawić się przez most, żeby poczuć się jak za miastem, bo prawy brzeg Wisły pozostawiono dziki. Można tutaj posiedzieć na prawdziwej piaszczystej plaży, rozpalić ognisko w wyznaczonym miejscu i obserwować zwierzęta, zupełnie jak w rezerwacie przyrody.

Po samej Wiśle można pływać kajakiem, z widokiem na szklane wieżowce. I to wszystko w jednym mieście, w Warszawie.

Jeśli będziesz mieć szczęście, w zaroślach wypatrzysz lisa. Przyjrzyj się też uważnie niebu, niedługo dowiesz się kto po nim szybuje.

Borne by the Vistula’s gentle current, we enter Poland’s capital, Warsaw. Here’s a view you won’t see anywhere else—on one side, a built-up city waterfront with modern university and office buildings, museums and monuments. But cross a bridge to the other bank and you’ll forget you’re in a city. Even downtown, the Vistula’s right bank remains unregulated and wild. Here, you can sunbathe on a sandy beach, build a bonfire in dedicated areas, and observe wild animals as if you were in a nature reserve! You can also go kayaking along the river while admiring the glass-walled skyscrapers.

All of that in just one city—Warsaw.

If you’re lucky, you might spot a fox in the bushes. Take a careful look at the sky and you’ll find out which animal is soaring in the air.

Wisła w swojej historii niejednokrotnie zmieniała swój bieg.

W jej pradolinie w środkowej Polsce rośnie dziś Puszcza Kampinoska.

W leśnych ostępach mieszka wiele dzikich zwierząt. Na terenie tutejszego parku narodowego udało się odtworzyć populację rysia europejskiego. Kto wie, może wrócą tu również żubry, największe zwierzęta Europy, z których słyną już inne zakątki Polski? Trwają prace przygotowawcze, więc trzymaj kciuki!

Over the centuries, the Vistula has changed its course many times.

The ancient valley of the Vistula basin in central Poland is today covered with the Kampinos Forest. Many animals live in this marshy wilderness. The local national park has completed a successful reintroduction of the European lynx. Who knows, maybe European bison will also come back? The bison are Europe’s largest animals and already the pride of several regions of Poland, where they survive or have been re-introduced. Preparations are under way, so keep your fingers crossed!

Orzeł bielik white-tailed eagle

Między Dęblinem a Płockiem, czyli w Dolinie Środkowej Wisły, rządzą ptaki! To one są tutaj na pierwszym planie: pływają, fruwają, gniazdują na piaszczystych wysepkach i wysokich skarpach. Para kajakarzy i pan w tradycyjnej łódce wydają się przy nich prawie niewidoczni. Niech cię jednak nie zmyli drobna sylwetka ptaka w lewym górnym rogu.

To orzeł bielik, największy polski ptak, uwieczniony na polskim godle państwowym. Szybuje wysoko, wygląda więc jak mała plamka na tle nieba, a tak naprawdę rozpiętość jego skrzydeł wynosi ponad dwa metry!

Pamiętasz gdzie już widziałeś orła bielika? A może rozpoznajesz tę parę kajakarzy?

Skąd przypłynęli?

The stretch of river between Dęblin and Płock, called the Middle Vistula Valley, is a bird kingdom! Our feathered friends take centre stage here, whether swimming, flying, or nesting on sandy islands and steep hills.

Next to them, you barely notice the pair in the kayak and the man in an old-fashioned boat. Don’t be fooled by the tiny silhouette of a bird in the top left corner. It belongs to a white-tailed eagle, Poland’s largest bird, depicted in the national emblem. It’s soaring high, so it looks like a dot against the sky, but in reality it has a wingspan of over two metres!

Wisła niesie nas do Torunia. Tutaj urodził się wielki astronom, Mikołaj Kopernik. To on odkrył, że Ziemia i inne planety kręcą się wokół Słońca. Ale w Toruniu akurat chyba wszystko kręci się wokół pierników. Nawet stare kamieniczki z rumianej cegły wyglądają jak polukrowane. Tradycja wypiekania pierników sięga średniowiecza.

Może więc sam Kopernik zajadał się nimi gdy jeszcze chodził do toruńskiej szkoły? Dziś pierników można wypatrywać w licznych sklepikach, a gwiazd – w toruńskim planetarium.

Znajdź dwa takie same pierniki!

Our next stop on the Vistula is Toruń. It is the birthplace of the great astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. He was the one who discovered that the Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun. But in Toruń, everything revolves around gingerbread. Even the old, red-brick townhouses look as if they were sugar-coated. The local tradition of baking gingerbread cookies dates back to the Middle Ages. Do you think Copernicus himself munched on them as he walked to school in Toruń? Today, you can find gingerbread in local stores and stars at the Toruń planetarium.

W dolnym biegu rzeka Wisła rozdziela się na kilka ramion.

Nad jednym z nich, zwanym Nogat, pyszni się zamek w Malborku.

To największa ceglana warownia średniowiecznej Europy i prawdziwy labirynt komnat, dziedzińców i murów obronnych.

Należał do rycerskiego zakonu krzyżackiego. Nie brakowało tu niczego: apartamentów wielkiego mistrza, ogromnej kuchni, sali rycerskiej, zbrojowni, kościoła, zamkowej toalety, ogrodu różanego, sprytnego systemu ogrzewania… Długo by wymieniać! A wszystko to otoczone było fosami wypełnionymi wiślaną wodą. Dziś jednak nie mieszkają tu już żadni rycerze…

Chwileczkę, kto w takim razie suszy tutaj pranie? I kto właśnie przebiegł pomiędzy murami? Dorysuj rycerzy.

In its lower reaches, the Vistula forks into separate branches.

On one of them, the Nogat, lies a true jewel: Malbork Castle. Malbork was the largest brick fortress in medieval Europe, and to this day it boasts a real labyrinth of chambers, courtyards, and defensive walls.

It used to belong to the Order of Teutonic Knights. The place was full of amenities: the Grand Master’s chambers, a great kitchen, the Knights’ Hall, an armoury, a church, a castle privy, a rose garden, a clever heating system, and much more! All of that was surrounded by moats filled with water from the Vistula. Today, however, you won’t find any more knights living here.

Wait, whose laundry is that? And who just rushed between the walls?

Na tej ilustracji prawdziwe jest niemal wszystko: w Gdańsku na nabrzeżu stoją rzędem stare spichlerze, po rzece pływają statki, a w sklepikach można kupić wspaniałą biżuterię z bursztynu, zastygłej prehistorycznej żywicy w kolorze miodu (czasem nawet znajdzie się w takiej bryłce jakaś zatopiona muszka). Bursztyn wydobywa się nad morzem, a fale wyrzucają go regularnie na brzeg. Nie tryska więc niestety wraz z wodą z miejskich kranów, ani nie przynoszą go z nieba sympatyczne lwy. Za to ze szczytu staromiejskiej fontanny rzeczywiście spogląda sam Neptun, rzymski bóg mórz. Bo Gdańsk to miasto leżące już nad samym Morzem Bałtyckim, celem wędrówki rzeki Wisły. A para lwów… to po prostu symbol Gdańska.

Dorysuj co Neptun mógł wyłowić z Wisły swoim trójzębem.

Almost everything in this picture is real: the Gdańsk waterfront features a row of lofty old mills, boats passing on the water, and shops that sell exquisite amber jewellery made with hardened, honey-coloured dating resin from prehistoric times. Sometimes, you can even find a fly preserved in a lump of amber! Beachcombers search for amber on the Baltic coast as the waves regularly toss it upon the shore. Too bad the amber doesn’t gush out from city taps or belong to the two nice lions who would scatter it around. But it is true that at the top of a fountain in the Old Town you will find Neptune himself—the Roman god of the sea. That’s because Gdańsk lies on the Baltic coast, where the Vistula river ends its journey.

And the two lions are simply a symbol of the city.

Dotarliśmy do ujścia rzeki Wisły. To już koniec naszej wędrówki: królowa polskich rzek dopływa do swojego celu, Morza Bałtyckiego.

Dużo tu się dzieje: kitesurferzy pędzą wraz z wiatrem po falach, plaża zachęca do wypoczynku. W portach jedne statki przywożą towary z dalekich stron, drugie wyruszają w rejs, wioząc towary z Polski. Na wodzie kołyszą się wytworne żaglowce, a czasem pojawiają się najmilsze z gości – bałtyckie foki. Co sprawiłoby ci więcej radości: spotkanie z foką czy znalezienie na plaży prawdziwego bursztynu wyrzuconego przez morskie fale?

Jak myślisz, co mogą wywozić statki z Polski? A co mogłyby przywieźć z miejsca, w którym mieszkasz? Narysuj.

We have arrived at the Vistula’s mouth. This is the end of our trip: the queen of the Polish rivers reaches its destination—the Baltic Sea. There’s a lot going on: kitesurfers are catching the waves and the idlers on the beach are catching some rays. In port, ships are unloading products from faraway countries, while other vessels are setting out to deliver Polish cargo. Majestic sailing ships are swaying on the horizon, and sometimes the cutest of guests pop over—the Baltic seals. What would make you happier: meeting a seal or finding a real piece of amber on the beach?
