Four generations of the Sassetti family have made wine in Montalcino. Livio worked the historic property through the late 1970s, then purchased the 16 hectare vineyard of the now–famous Podere Pertimali. The Podere is in the Montosoli area, north of Montalcino, a particularly well-known area for the cultivation of the Sangiovese grape. In 1967, Livio was among the founders of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, which was the same year the DOC(G) system was written into law. In 1968 he built a terracotta wall in his cellar to preserve the old vintages of the wines produced by the family. Today, that collection consists of almost 1,000 bottles, including a bottle dated to 1915. Faithful to the teachings of his family Livio has over time renewed and expanded the vineyards, preserving the genetic heritage of the old vines and preserving the primigenie characteristics. In 1999, the Sassetti family acquired property in the Maremma, La Querciolina, within the Montecucco DOC. More recently, they have begun working with a small property in Colle Argento, in the Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG region. Today the estates are managed by Lorenzo Sassetti, Livio’s son, fourth generation family member and acclaimed winemaker. He is joined by his wife Sabina and together they passionately uphold the family name and reputation. All of Lorenzo’s wines have deep roots in their respective terroirs, showcasing his willingness to preserve their traditional features. The wines are invigorating, aromatic, powerful styles that dance on the palate rather than attack it with blunt force. The Sassetti’s “Pertimali” Brunello di Montalcino is a collector’s wine. In 1971, just a few years after the Brunello di Montalcino appellation was created, Giovanni Neri, a 48-year-old grain and seed merchant from Montevarchi in the Arno valley south of Florence, set out for Montalcino to fulfill his passion for wine by establishing an estate there. Among the many properties for sale he chose Poderi Casanova, which covered 200 hectares east of the city, recognizing its potential to produce great Brunello thanks to the altitude and soil composition. He changed its name to Casanova di Neri and began to restore the existing vineyards and plant new ones. The first wines were produced in the late 1970s. In 1981 Giovanni Neri purchased the Cerretalto vineyard and began producing this, now legendary, single vineyard Brunello, bottled only from the finest vintages and released after extended aging. Giovanni Neri’s son Giacomo joined him working full time in the vineyards and winery in 1986. After Giovanni’s passing in 1991, Giacomo became the sole owner and has since acquired five additional vineyards and built an innovative, largely underground, gravity fed winery. His sons Giovanni and Gianlorenzo joined the business in 2012 and 2017 respectively. They harvest and sort their fruit meticulously by hand and ferment their wines naturally in open, truncated cone vats of steel and wood at controlled temperature. Aging takes place in wood casks of various origin, age and size, and additionally in bottle. Founded in 1838 by William Deutz, this historic Champagne house is based in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ – prime Pinot Noir territory situated at the base of the chalky Montagne de Reims. Deutz’s estate vineyards are all certified sustainable, and grower partners farm either sustainably or organically. 80% of the vineyards used to produce Champagne Deutz are Premier Cru or Grand Cru. Winemaking is very traditional. Only the gentle first pressing is used and vinification is in stainless steel vats to emphasize purity and freshness. IL CORRIERE Pinot Grigio is made with hand picked organic grapes, the vineyards are located in near by the hills of Abruzzo. Immediately after the harvest, the grapes are pressed and the resulting juice is cooled and separated from the skins, in order to preserve the varietal aromas. Fermentation starts in stainless steel tank for 15 days; after few months in a steel tank the wine is bottled. The floral notes make it a versatile wine with an obvious acidity is suitable for any kind of meal, from aperitifs to desserts. It goes well with shellfish and seafood aperitifs, but also first courses, foie gras and blue cheeses.

At Santa Maria la Palma, there are no counts, barons or marquises. Instead, there are numerous families of humble winemakers. Fifty years ago, these winemakers were allocated a series of uncultivated plots near the city of Alghero. Rather than a silver spoon, they had strong arms, straight backs, passion and commitment. Together, they tilled the soil and planted the vines. Working side by side, they harvested the grapes and built a cellar complex. These plots were ideal for vines, with great soil, plenty of sun and the sea nearby. They chose the grape types they wanted to grow, combining some well-known names with some lesser-known jewels. Today, 326 growers contribute to the winery. We are the children and grandchildren of those who first tilled those clods of earth, with their own hands, many years ago. Through a gentle vacuum process, alcohol is extracted from a wine made from selected grapes. In a state-of-the-art technique, the air pressure is reduced in a cauldron allowing alcohol to evaporate at only 25-30 °C (77-86 °F). The low thermal stress ensures that the character, taste and fine aromas of the original wine are preserved and the remaining alcohol content is less than 0.25 % vol. Straw yellow with greenish reflections, a delicate and persistent perlage. In the nose with fragrant aromatic and juicy notes of white pulp fruit, white blossoms and citrus. It is dry and lively in the mouth, convincing with its distinctive freshness.
RIESLING ZERO
The new Alcohol-Removed from Steinbock Selection Dr. Fischer is made from a fruity Riesling Kabinett. Using an innovative vacuum distillation process the alcohol is removed. The atmospheric pressure is reduced to about 15mbar, and in this way the boiling point of the alcohol is lowered from about 78° C (173° F) to about 25-30° C (77-86° F). The delicate aromas of the wine are almost preserved and a beverage with an alcohol by volume lower than 0.25 % is obtained. Straw yellow color with greenish reflections. Fragrant, aromatic notes of white fruits and citrus. Soft and refreshing on the palate.

A blend of over a dozen plots from both Cote Blonde and Brune (granite and schiste soils), mainly Syrah with 2% Viognier – fermented in stainless steel vat then aged a year in old barriques and foudres – beautifully refined, precise and delicate, with juicy, crunchy berry flavors. Stephane Ogier, who represents the seventh generation of his family in their Northern Rhone village, joined his father Michel in 1997 after oenology studies in Beaune where he acquired a taste for elegance and finesse. Since 2014 he has been making his wines in their ultra-modern cellar in Ampuis – lots of room to spread his wings and to give free rein to his creative talent. Of the 18 hectares he farms, 3.5 hectares are on the most beautiful slopes of Cote Rotie. Everything is done by hand in the vineyard. Vine density is high and yields are low. The wines are fermented exclusively on their natural yeasts with varying percentages of whole cluster depending on the vintage. Ogier’s impressive array of parcel and barrel selections showcase a level of precision and detail that puts him among the elite. Over the last decade Stephane has doubled his portfolio of vineyards by expanding to the more affordable Southern Rhone, and he now has a second state of the art winery in Cairanne.
