Steven Berkowitz, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.O.S., C.I.M.E., A.N.N.A. Dr. Steven Berkowitz attended the Cooper Union School of Engineering & Science and received a degree in Mechanical Engineering followed by medical school at SUNY Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Berkowitz then trained in orthopedics at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and has devoted his professional practice to shoulder problems as well as general orthopedics. He is deeply involved in many professional and academic activities statewide including the Board of Directors/Past President of the Orthopaedic Surgeons of New Jersey/New Jersey Orthopaedic Society and the Board of Trustees of the Medical Society of New Jersey. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Berkowitz also is a Certified Medical Examiner and performs independent medical evaluations. He has been recognized with a listing in “The Castle Connolly Guide How to Find the Best Doctors in NY Metro Area” and in the global publication of Who’s Who. “The statement which best expresses my feelings about medicine is a quote by Vince Lombardi, who said, ‘…the quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their field of endeavor…”
Dr. Berkowitz’s Innaugural Gala Remarks One year ago, my wife and I heard one of the most frightening sentences known to man – “You have Cancer.” I thought that the world was crashing in. In fact, our first oncologist gave me only two years to live. But, over time, I found the right team, learned that there have been changes in treatment of my cancer and started weekly treatment. Although the going has been rough, I now stand before you as the 223rd President of the Medical Society of New Jersey. Each day, I think about three words and how they pertain to my personal life, as well as to the future of the Medical Society of New Jersey: hope, courage and strength. We must have HOPE for the future—we must never concede our role as the leader of organized medicine, while we reach out to our colleagues in specialty and county societies. By doing so, we strengthen the entire house of medicine. We must have the COURAGE of our convictions. Our mission has always been to represent the physicians’ as well as the public’s best interest and improve the quality of life in New Jersey. We may have our detractors from time to time, but never let it be said that we cowered under pressure from those who do not agree with us. Lastly, we must have the STRENGTH of a unified Medical Society of New Jersey. A Medical Society of New Jersey which continues to grow stronger by recruitment and retention of members. A Medical Society of New Jersey which searches for new revenue sources. A Medical Society of New Jersey which is transparent to its members and constituent societies.
Dr. Berkowitz’s Innaugural Gala Remarks In my own life, I’d like to thank my personal physicians, Dr. Marc Colmer, Dr. William Lerner, and Dr. Jennifer Haythe for their excellent care and for leading me out of the darkness of fear into the light of “Hope, Courage and Strength.” And I’d like to thank my wonderful wife, Pamela, who has stood with me through this entire journey. Her love keeps me alive. I recall that on being first diagnosed, I told her “If you run now – no one would blame you.” My wife of 43 years took her wedding vows seriously and together we’ve weathered the storms of my illness. Thank you to all of you for joining me this evening. I am humbled and honored.
