Running to history FHS set a new standard for future teams By David Jenkins Staff Writer
sports@farmersvilletimes.com Before even making the threehour bus ride on Nov. 9 to Round Rock, Farmersville had already made history.
The Lady Farmers made the programs first appearance in a state meet and Ty Rolen became the second Farmer in seven years to run at state. “I think competing at state is a moment that they will never forget. It was great for our program,” head coach Jennifer Crawford said. “Our slogan allyear long has been “it’s our time to shine.” These kids worked so hard year around to improve and

Lady Farmers bounced back, made playoffs By David Jenkins Staff Writer
sports@farmersvilletimes.com Qualifying for the Class 2A Region II playoffs was no easy task. After starting off the District 12-2A slate 1-5, the Lady Farmers had to win as many matches as possible in the second round. They did just that, going 4-2 and beating Van Alstyne 19-25, 25-17, 2519, 25-20 in a fourth-place tiebreaker
game. Farmersville finished the season 1716 overall, which was an improvement over the 16-19 record in 2012. “I am very proud of the girls and how far they have come this season. We fought back from the bottom of our district to make it in and then played the No. 9 team (Callisburg) as close as we did was a great accomplishment,” head coach Harold Davis said. “We are going to miss our seniors Haven Neal and Brittany Ortiz.”
Caddo Mills won district at 11-1, followed by No. 23 Gunter and Pilot Point, both tied for second at 9-3. Left out of the postseason were Van Alstyne, Sunnyvale 3-9 and Leonard 0-12. A week ago on Nov. 5, Farmersville returned to the playoffs to take on No. 9 state-ranked Callisburg in bi-district at Bells High School. “They are a good team. They are 35-4

Last season the Farmers put together one of the programs best campaigns in more than 10 years. They won their first district title (12-0 in 12-2A), since they took 14-2A outright in 2000’01. By taking the top spot, Farmersville picked up the Class 2A Region II bi-district trophy. Overall, Farmersville went 28-5 and finished at No. 19 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25. Although the Farmers lost several key players to graduation, new head coach Kendrick Broadus expects his team to continue to have success on the hardwood. “I think we can still have a great season with the guys we have returning,” he said. “I think we have the ability to repeat, if not go further than last season. I watched a lot of film on what they did last year and I’m just trying to put the missing pieces in with the puzzle. I think we can go much further than last year.” Broadus, who previously coached at Austin LBJ (4A school) takes over for Grapevine floor general Courtney Christenson. “I wanted to be part of a system that wanted to build the athletic program as a whole and Farmersville is doing that,” Broadus said.

Farmersville loses district finale Take third in 6-2A Div. I; Pilot Point waiting in Friday’s playoff opener By David Jenkins Staff Writer
sports@farmersvilletimes.com If you were to pick a theme for the Farmersville and Van Alstyne season finale it would have to be a tale of two halves at Panthers Stadium.
After being dominated the first two quarters, the home team Panthers flipped the script in the second portion and came away with a 35-24 win in District 6-2A Div. I. “Our philosophy is we felt like we had to score as many points as we could early, because they wind up wearing you down late in the third quarter and into the fourth, and that has been their history,” head coach Sammy Burnett said. “They came out in the third quarter and started doing what they do best, which is run the ball behind those big lineman and that wore out our smaller defensive line.
