NET Health continues investigation By Zak Wellerman
ZWELLERMAN@MARSHALLNEWSMESSENGER.COM
NET Health, the Northeast Texas Public Health District, recently announced that it is continuing to look for the source of exposure to Legionnaires’ disease at this year’s East Texas State Fair. Tests showed that appropriate chlorine levels were present in the water samples obtained so far from
water sources at the fairgrounds. The city-owned Harvey Convention Center has been eliminated as the source, according to a statement released by the city. “NET Health and state officials tested the water sources at Harvey Hall, as the disease is spread through water particles,” according to the statement. “Public health officials confirmed the facility came
back negative for any conditions that would allow for Legionnaires’ disease to be present.” A statement from NET Health released Friday said it will provide information updates on its social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) and its website, myNETHealth.org. So far, seven people in East Texas have been diagnosed with the disease, and hospitals in the area have
identified five others with symptoms, George Roberts, NET Health CEO, said Thursday morning. Legionnaires’ disease is spread when a person inhales water droplets containing the Legionella bacteria. A person with the disease cannot transmit it to others, according to NET Health. NET Health is emphasizing that attending the fair does not mean a person will
likely develop the disease. Roberts said state health investigators have determined that all who are sick attended the East Texas State Fair that took place Sept. 20-29 in Tyler. If exposed to the disease, attendees already would have exhibited symptoms, he said. The health district is urging anyone who attended the fair this year and has symptoms to contact their health care provider imme-
diately. Legionnaires’ disease mimics pneumonia. Symptoms include fever and difficulty breathing. A test determines whether a sick person has been infected by the Legionella bacteria, Roberts said. Northeast Texas residents who have questions about Legionnaires’ disease can call the Disease Surveillance Division at NET Health at 903-595-1350.
