Bridge over flooding waters By Wyndi Veigel News Editor

news@princetonherald.com The J.M. Caldwell Sr. POW Camp/Community Park is now shut down after the bridge and road into the park has been washed out. According to information shared by City Manager Derek Borg at the April 27 city council meeting, the bridge washed out after torrential rains occurred April 23 through April 25. Part of the problem, Borg said, was the drainage culverts were not large enough. After talking to engineers, either an additional 60-inch culvert is needed or an increased size of 82-inches for the two culverts is

required. “There are no good materials there,” Borg said. Eventually, Borg explained, the city will have to take on a major bridge expansion for the park, about $1 million, but currently the conditions are not fully developed to require it. After discussing the matter at length with city councilmembers, a motion was made to allow Borg to proceed with a bridge reconstruction project. The cost, he said, will be between $50,000 to $75,000. “I don’t believe it’s going to be over $50,000,” Borg said. Borg is expecting the park to be reopened by the city’s July 4 event. “If we need to spend more

money to get it right then that’s OK,” Mayor Ken Bowers said. As far as the little league games are concerned, the city is in the process of attempting to work out an agreement with the school district to play on their fields. The Walmart development was also on the council agenda with an ordinance regarding the participation limit between the city of Princeton and Walmart for the two lanes of South Beauchamp Boulevard. The ordinance states that if “Wal-Mart causes the construction of certain water, wastewater, roadway, and drainage improvements (collectively, the See POW page 2A

Man meets police ... again, charged twice By Joe Reavis Staff Writer

news@princetonherald.com A Princeton resident made the acquaintance of police officers twice recently, and neither meeting ended well. Vuthy Chheng, 33, of 920 Collin Circle wound up with charges filed against him on complaints of public intoxication, criminal mischief and resisting arrest. The first incident occurred on March 30 when officer Wayne Clark was dispatched to 910 Meadow Trail and found a man, later identified as Chheng, hitting a tree with a piece of 2x4 lumber. Clark reports that he asked the man to drop the board, which he did, then told him to get on the ground, which he did not and began yelling in his native tongue. When Chheng assumed an aggressive posture he was hit with a taser and was subdued, the of-

ficer reports. The 33-year-old was taken to Medical Center McKinney then to Collin County Detention Center where he was booked on a public intoxication charge. Clark was assisted by officers Chance Alexander, Jesus Rodriguez and Colby Owen. About two weeks later, Princeton Officer Jonathan Fischer was summoned on a report that a man was breaking things inside a residence at 920 Collin Circle, and when he arrived he found a subject later identified as Chheng. Fischer investigated and found that a door frame and drywall in a bedroom of the residence had been damaged and the father of the 33-yearold wanted to file charges. Chheng was arrested at the scene, but began to struggle with Fischer and other officers that had responded, See POLICE page 2A
