Ordinances dealing with junk, debris slated for council review

By Greg Ford Staff Writer

news@sachsenews.com The City of Sachse plans to take steps Monday that are designed to make the community more aesthetically pleasing. Specifically, there are revisions to current ordinances that council members will consider at the April 3 regular meeting. One will deal with junk,

debris and nuisances, and the other regarding junked vehicles, said city manager Gina Nash. “The biggest thing is that we will actually have a definition of junk and debris,” Nash said. “We never had an ordinance that prohibited junk and debris on property.” Currently, she said, Sachse’s only ordinance regarding properties deals with lawn maintenance, specifically high grass and weeds.

Council members conducted a work session on the matter prior to the March 20 meeting. That occurred two weeks after the council postponed a vote at its March 6 meeting to review the matter. At that meeting, some residents expressed concern that the section regarding junked vehicles might be applied to automobiles they’re working on in a driveway. However, Nash noted, that won’t be the case under the proposed change.

“Today, you can work in a driveway, but you cannot leave parts all over the place,” she said. The proposed rule regarding “junked vehicles,” she said, would apply to automobiles on a person’s property that are clearly not being used. Such cars, Nash said, would be ones that are missing parts, are up on blocks or have expired an registration that is months past due. Under the proposed changes, the

term “junk” would pertain to numerous discarded items deemed worn out or worthless, and would included such things as household items, floor coverings and used building materials and furniture, such as couches that are not designed for outdoor use, Nash said. Also, the revisions will define nuisance as items in public view that are defined as detrimental to public health, including stagnant water, abandoned refrigerators and garbage.

A few rough edges need to rounded out, and, if they are, then dog owners in and around Sachse will soon have a place to take their pooches for some four-legged recreation. Currrently, the scheduled opening for the temporary dog park, located near the Sachse Animal Shelter, will likely be around the end of April, said Tricia Lindsey, historian for Sachse Park Pals, also known as Friends of Sachse Parks and Recreation. At the moment, insurance for the park still has to be finalized and bids are being taken for fence construction.
