Angel Tree program now under way By Wyndi Veigel News Editor
news@farmersvilletimes.com Though it’s early November, Allen Community Outreach is already busy at work on the Angel Tree program for the holiday season. In years past, Independent Bank, local businesses and churches have taken on the task of making sure Farmersville ISD children receive gifts at Christmastime. This year, ACO, is stepping in to coordinate the effort and the volunteers. ACO, who operates the Farmersville Resale Shop located on Hwy. 78, has organized a Christmas Adoption Program and Toy Drive in Allen for many years. According to organizers, this same system will be implemented in Farmersville to insure that no children go without new toys, gifts and new clothes. This year much of the planning is being done online to aid the program. Courtesy of Randy Slagle

Fifth graders learned all about the 1900s recently as they participated in the Farmersville 1900s program organized by the Farmersville Historical Society. The program, which started in 1996, has been instrumental in creating an interest for many children, – an interest in learning the history of the community and those ancestors who long ago created it. The idea originated with Eldridge Pendleton, a local Farmersville descendent. A number of years ago, Pendleton planted an idea in the minds of three enthusiastic, history-minded, very busy ladies in town, Loydell Seward, Rita Roose and sister Jeanette Bland. Illegal game rooms closed in county
From Staff Reports
news@farmersvilletimes.com Early this year, Collin County Sheriff’s Office investigators began an investigation of “game rooms” in primarily unincorporated areas of Collin County. The purpose was to determine if any were operating illegally, and if so, to develop a plan that would close them and hopefully keep them from reopening at other locations. After several weeks of research, a method was developed and presented to the Collin County District Attorney’s Office which played an integral role by agreeing with the process and assigning a prosecutor to work with the Sheriff’s Office. Traditional investigations involved long term and costly storage of evidence. Sheriff’s Office investigators response was to seize the gaming machines under civil stature,
which allows for destruction of the machines after the case is disposed which would prevent them from being used in other locations. As the end of October, there are no longer any illegal gaming establishments operating in rural Collin County. There were also two establishments closed within the city of Farmersville, which sought assistance from the Sheriff’s Office to combat the problem. 15 establishments were identified as game rooms. Arrests from these locations have occurred for Theft, Public Intoxication, Assault, and Narcotics Possession. One location had eight felonies listed in their call history. There are investigations resulting from reports, which include Burglary, Attempted Suicides, Narcotic Activity, Theft, Disturbances and Robberies. Between June 2013 and See GAME page 7A
