Welcome

Welcome to the 29th National Women’s Collegiate Golf Championship presented by Arcis Golf! We are thrilled to gather once again for this prestigious event, made possible through the generous support of our Presenting Sponsor, Arcis Golf, for the second consecutive year.

On behalf of the Women In Golf Foundation, Inc. (WIGF) Board of Directors and staff, I extend a warm welcome to all the elite teams, coaches, sponsors, and supporters who make this championship possible.

For decades, it has been our mission and passion to develop leadership and excellence among young women in athletics. To achieve our mission, we deliver stellar programming for those committed to personal and professional development, particularly within the realm of golf. For 2024, our theme is "The Champion’s Journey – On and Off the Course." Look at what the participants will experience:

1. We kick off on Monday morning, April 1st, with a Professional Development session featuring esteemed industry professionals sharing their insights and best practices. Learn how to bring your best self forward and showcase the person you aspire to be.

2. On Monday afternoon, seize the opportunity to network with our sponsors and supporters during the Business/Collegiate Scramble. Make the most of this invaluable networking opportunity—it's your chance to maximize connections and forge lasting relationships.

3. Tuesday and Wednesday mark an exciting milestone as we introduce 54-hole competition for Division I (DI) and Division II (DII), reaffirming our commitment to advancing women’s golf programs. You are officially trailblazers, shaping the future of the Women’s Collegiate Championship experience.

4. Enjoy golf! Our host golf course, The Golf Club at Cinco Ranch is one of the most prestigious in the Arcis portfolio. This championship course was voted "Top 25 Best of Texas" by Gulf Coast Golfer and awarded 3 Stars in Golf Digest's "Places To Play."

We are delighted to continue our partnership with the LPGA, awarding the top DI medalist with a player’s exemption to the Epson Tour Event - Hartford Healthcare Women’s Championship, July 8-14. Additionally, thanks to our collaboration with Chevron, the DII champion will receive an invitation to participate in the Chevron Pro-Am. Furthermore, through our partnerships with the LPGA and PGA, your scores could potentially serve as your PAT qualifiers.

As you compete this week, remember that your efforts extend beyond the green, or “Off the Course”. You represent your institutions with your champion level effort and attitude, leaving a lasting legacy and contributing to the growth of the game of golf. Give it your all, and most importantly, enjoy the 29th National Women’s Collegiate Championship.

Join me in a very special thank you to all our partners whose support make this event possible.

Wishing you all the best on your journey to excellence,

LaJean

Creating new pathways for Women & Youth

An idea in one’s head, conceived and developed, can change lives. Supporting collegiate golf was an idea in Klenton Sparks’ and Lenora Bryant’s minds in 1994. They wanted to impact the development of women’s golf at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). At the same time, LaJean Gould wanted to learn the game of golf. While seeking an instructor, she met Klenton and Lenora who shared their vision with her and asked for assistance. Enthusiastic about the idea, LaJean brought in The National Coalition of 100 Black Women of Decatur, GA to support an event identified as the Women’s Collegiate Golf Classic for the first 2 years.

As the idea evolved, LaJean sought the support of the golf industry and consulted with leading industry insiders Bill Dickey, Gerald Davis, Barbara Douglas and Lew Horne. All of these golf legends have passed and left us with big shoes to fill. Their work laid the foundation for relationships with the National Minority Scholarship Association and The National Minority Golf Foundation. In addition, Nathaniel Goldston, Valerie Montague Goldston and Marvy Moore provided support and direction. Together, these leaders helped to build alliances with the LPGA, The PGA of America, the USGA, and other corporations to enable the creation of the Women In Golf Foundation and bringing national visibility and credibility to the event and its work.

In 1999, the Women In Golf Foundation, Inc. (WIGF) was established to enable the Women’s Collegiate Golf Classic to stand on its own as a championship event with an important mission—To enhance the lives of females in golf programs at HBCUs through the development of programs and activities that enhance the skills and career awareness of the team members. The vision was and continues to be to enable HBCU female golf teams to increase their visibility, improve competitive skills, and ensure full participation in all aspects of the game, the business of golf, and the corporate world. Golf develops discipline, self-control, decision-making skills, and is a significant tool used to consummate business transactions. Through this work, lives have been impacted.

History

History (continued)

Clear goals were established:

 A season-ending competitive opportunity for female collegiate golfers.

 A vehicle for career awareness and networking opportunities for female collegiate golfers.

 Personal development and life skill enhancement seminars.

 To promote golf as a vehicle for educational opportunities including scholarships, internships and career positions.

The first schools to participate in the event were Alabama State University, Talladega College, Grambling State University, Jackson State University, Southern University and Texas Southern University. We also congratulate Alabama State University and Texas Southern Universities for their consistent support.

Now here we are, 29 years later, the event is the 29th National Women’s Collegiate Golf Championship. The event is being presented by Arcis Golf at The Golf Club at Cinco Ranch in Katy, TX. This is the first time in 29 years the event will be held outside of Georgia. This event is destined to expand its participation to support more collegiate golfers throughout the United States. This is a significant milestone for any organization, but especially for WIGF. Women’s golf still has a long way to go in the industry. Over the years, we have touched over 1,000 young women through this event and our junior program. We look to the participants of today to take the mantle of giving back and impacting lives through golf so we can continue to pay this work forward.

Lauren Shelly

Vice President of Human Resources

American Junior Golf Association

Lauren began working for the AJGA in 2008 after being a communications intern in the summer of 2007. A non-golfer, she began her career in golf through the AJGA’s internship program after graduating from Elon University with a degree in communications and a minor in business administration. She quickly realized she had found her niche. She was initially hired as a Tournament Coordinator, running and assisting a total of 13 events in her first eight months, while achieving a 96 on the PGA-USGA Rules of Golf test.

With a passion for recruiting, Lauren was promoted to the Director of Recruiting and Special Events in the fall of 2008 and spent over a decade building the AJGA’s internship program into the backbone of the organization. Under her leadership the program has grown exponentially from 100s to 1000s of applicants, while improving the hiring process and impacting the next generation of AJGA staff and industry leaders not only in golf but in sports and corporate America. Eventually her role evolved into the Director of Training and Development where she focused her time on training and educating the AJGA staff on personal growth and professional development, while overseeing the internship program and the organization’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts.

Currently, Lauren is the Vice President of Human Resources. In her role, she oversees all HR policies and procedures for the organization, the internship program, training and development, staff welfare and the execution of the DEI initiatives."

After playing on the women’s golf team at Texas Christian University in her native Texas, she joined Troon in 1999 and has worked as a merchandise manager, assistant clubhouse manager, director of golf, club manager, and now as the general manager at Champion Hills in western North Carolina since 2018. “I think there’s a higher level of respect for women now than when I started,” she said. “Or maybe it’s a sense of knowing that people are in their jobs for a reason, and you don’t have to go around them to find what you might think is a better answer.”

Playing with members at her club has had a huge impact on the way she is perceived. “Once people know your background and where you are coming from, that really makes a difference,” she said. “Plus, you created a better relationship than you had with them a month earlier. It gives you more credibility at the end of the day.”

Serving as a role model is a responsibility Schultz welcomes. “I enjoy relating to the high school and college students who work in outside operations to let them know that is where I started, and if this is something you want to do for the rest of your life, the opportunities are there. I think it makes a difference for them to see it really can happen if they want to make a career in the golf industry.”
