New Pound! Fun facts about the new £1 coin The new 12-sided £1 coin will finally be here on 28 March. It's the first time the pound coin has been changed in more than 30 years. The old coin became a problem as they were easily illegally copied. So what's so great about the new coin? It’s got 12 sides. It’s made of two different coloured metals. It’s been designed to make it very difficult to make fake coins. The new design includes the four countries that make up the UK: ● ● ● ● It was designed by David Pearce, a 15 year old schoolboy from Walsall who won a competition. By the end of 2017 1.5 billion of the new coins will have been made. October the 15th of this year is the last day you will be able to use the old style pound coins.
Don't worry! You can swap your old pound coins at the bank for new ones.

Book Shelf A funny story about a boy who swaps his life with a pigeon with disastrous results! Looking up from the book he is reading the boy sees a pigeon on his windowsill. He’s always wanted to fly. Luckily, the pigeon has always wanted to read so soon the two swap places. Flying is fun but not everything else about being a bird is! But what will happen when the boy wants to swap back?

Paint toilet paper roll black. Draw wings on black paper and cut out. Cut three strips that will fit around toilet paper roll from yellow paper. When paint is dry, glue yellow strips on toilet paper as shown. Cut a circle from, the cream paper and draw a smile with the black marker. Glue two googley eyes above smile. Cut the pipe cleaner in half and glue behind face for antennae. Glue the face onto the top front of the toilet paper roll.

1 Open up the Oreo cookie carefully and push in eight small liquorice pieces. 2 Place top back on cookie and dab a little icing on the front top cookie. 3 Push Smarties on to the icing for eyes
All About Eggs 1 egg (hard boiled is less messy if you accidentally break it, but you can use a raw one) 1 cup vinegar
Pour 1 cup of vinegar into jar Add the egg Record what you see (bubbles rising from the egg) Leave the egg in the vinegar for one day. Remove the egg and feel it.
Eggs contain something called "calcium carbonate". This is what makes them hard. Vinegar is an acid known as acetic acid. When calcium carbonate (the egg) and acetic acid (the vinegar) combine, a chemical reaction takes place and carbon dioxide (a gas) is released. This is what the bubbles are made of.

We need reporters from both Key stage 3 and Key stage 4 to help Mrs Norman produce the next edition of the Southall magazine. Your job will be to report and take photographs of events in the school and interview visitors.
To apply for the job as reporter , ask your teacher for an application form.
Once you have completed the form and made sure that all the details are filled in and it has your full name, post the form in mrs Norman’s post box.
Once the application forms have all been looked at , the final few will be interviewed to see who will be Southalls team of reporters.
