Mitzvah of Tzniut: More Than What’s On the Outside

zniut, meaning modesty, is the foundation of Jewish values and plays a key role in the structure of a Jewish family. Tzniut can range anywhere from making sure proper clothing is worn, to being able to contain oneself in a dif cult situation. We show our tzniut in the way we walk down the street, interact with others, and dress. As Hashem’s children, it's our job to conduct ourselves with the uppermost modesty and dignity. The mitzvah of tzniut was intended to maintain the sacredness of humans from harmful things that occur throughout daily life. Keeping the mitzvah of tzniut and refraining from calling unnecessary attention to ourselves externally allows for the neshama, soul, to shine.

At rst thought, the mitzvah of tzniut seems as if it only includes rules about clothing and covering ourselves up. This is only partially true. There are many tzniut guidelines that are used to help us understand how to allow our internal selves to shine as bright as our external selves, and our clothing just plays a crucial role in helping this happen. When we begin understanding and connecting with the mitzvah of tzniut, it allows others to get to know us on a deeper level and create further bonds. Tzniut dressing allows full interaction with the world in powerful ways and allows our inner selves to present themselves.

The original source on tzniut is often considered to be from Micah Perek Vav, Pasuk Chet. The pasuk says: ‫"הִּגִ֥יד לְָ֛ אָ​ָד֖ם מַה־ּטֹ֑וב ּומָֽה־יְהֹוָ֞ה ּדֹוֵרׁ֣ש מִּמְָ֗ ּכִ֣י‬ "‫אִם־עֲׂשֹ֤ות מִׁשְּפָט֙ וְאַ֣הֲבַת חֶ֔סֶד וְהַצְנֵ֥עַ לֶ֖כֶת עִם־אֱֹלהֶֽיָ׃‬

This is one of the main examples in helping us understand the idea that modesty is not only about what we wear, but also how we act and present ourselves. Rashi explains that when the pasuk says “‫”וְהַצְנֵ֥עַ לֶ֖כֶת‬ (and walk modestly), he is conveying the explanation that being modest also means having compassion for others. When dealing with people’s feelings, we should act not only in the way we would want to be treated, but also in the way we would want to be

The mitzvah of tzniut applies not only to women, as men take part in this mitzvah too. The Talmud discusses men’s clothing at least as much as it discusses women’s. In Yoma, we are told that Rabbi Elazar ben Harsom’s colleagues would not permit him to wear certain clothes because they were partly transparent and they could see through the thin material.

In Talmud Shabbos, clothes are referred to as items to help a person show honor. It is considered shameful for someone to wear clothes beneath them, which applies to men just as much as it does to women. Even though tzniut is concerned with clothes for both men and women, it goes beyond even this. It helps us understand that while what is on the outside is important, what's more important is that it truly re ects what’s on the inside.

Dressing with tzniut is compared to the sun. When we see the sun uncovered, looking at it is blinding and painful.

Yet when a cloud comes over and blocks the sun, we’re not only able to see it, we are also able to see the beauty of the rays beaming out of the sun. When something is uncovered, it is hard to look past the exterior. There is no way to look straight at it without being blinded, not allowing what is inside to be seen. When we nd it within ourselves to present ourselves in a way of tzniut, people can see the true beauty and the sunbeams radiating from within.

Acting with tzniut can also mean reserving ourselves in necessary situations and acting in the best possible way.

Acting calmly and respectfully, when in reality we would rather be shouting and ghting, can be a dif cult task.

Working on this can help our relationships with others and prepare us for future situations.

Acting in a way of tzniut may seem dif cult, but this mitzvah should serve as a source of pride that you have the strength and devotion to commit yourself to such a way of life. A way so that when you’re walking down the street, people will know that you are someone who follows Hashem’s commandments. By conducting yourself in these manners, you are meriting to establish generations of righteous children. You’re lling your own life with brachot, blessings, and Torah, and allowing yourself to reach even higher levels, bringing you that much closer to Hashem.

Birthday Season is Driving the GMSG Crazy

With the majority of high school students being around this age, more students will soon be able to drive themselves to school. The pressure of school work and driving tests has caused many of the underclassmen to feel pressured to pass their driving tests as close to their birthday as possible.

Parshas Lech Lecha: The Tests of Life

arshas Lech Lecha consists of a series of events throughout Avraham’s life where he encounters different situations. At rst glance, it seems like Avraham just lives a really unfortunate life, but while delving into the content of the parsha, the truth comes out.

The challenges Avraham goes through were not by coincidence, as nothing really ever is a coincidence since Hashem pulls all the strings in what is the puppet show of our lives. In his story, we see how Avraham, the rst person to believe in one G-d, goes through a series of ten tests throughout his life, which prove his faith.

Speci cally in this week's parsha, it discusses a few of these ‘tests’ that Hashem sends to Avraham. Rambam gives an explanation of what exactly are the ten tests.

Beginning in the rst pasuk, Hashem speaks to Avraham and says, “ָ‫לְֶ־לְָ֛ מֵאְַרצְָ֥ ּומִּמֹֽולְַדּתְָ֖ ּומִּבֵ֣ית אָבִ֑י‬ ָ‫אְַראֶּֽך‬, ‫אֶל־הָאֶָ֖רץ אֲׁשֶ֥ר‬," which means, “Go forth from your native land and from your father’s house to the land that I will show you.”

The rst test G-d sends to Avraham is when He tells him to go with his family, leave everything behind, and go to some place which Hashem will show him. The Midrash explains that “ְָ֛‫ ”לְֶ־ל‬means “go for yourself,” meaning that he should leave where he is living and go spread his faith in Hashem and values with other places.

The second test is when Hashem sends a famine in the land that he was dwelling in. As it says in Perek Yud Bet, Pasuk Yud, “‫וַיְהִ֥י ָרעָ֖ב ּבָאֶָ֑רץ וַּיֵֶ֨רד אַבְָר֤ם מִצְַר֨יְמָה֙ לָגּ֣ור ׁשָ֔ם‬ ‫ּכִֽי־כָבֵ֥ד הָָֽרעָ֖ב ּבָאֶָֽרץ‬,” meaning, “There was a famine in the land, and Avram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.” This is yet another hardship for Avraham, yet he sticks to his faith in Hashem and continues to cling to Hashem. Rashi says that in this test, Hashem is testing to see if he still continues to follow Hashem after being sent away to Canaan and now being forced to leave and be a foreigner in a new land, Egypt.

Avraham continues to follow Hashem but once he gets to Egypt, Hashem hits him with yet another test of faith.

In Perek Yud Bet, Pasuk Tet Vav it says,”‫וַּיְִראּ֤ו אֹתָּה֙ ׂשֵָר֣י‬ ‫פְַרעֹ֔ה וַיְהַֽלְלּ֥ו אֹתָּ֖ה אֶל־ּפְַרעֹ֑ה וַּתֻּקַ֥ח הָאִּׁשָ֖ה ּבֵ֥ית ּפְַרעֹֽה‬,” which means, “Pharaoh’s courtiers saw her and praised her to Pharaoh, and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s palace.” Here Avraham is sent another test, his wife is being taken away from him! The next test is with the ght of the four kings and ve kings, when Lot, Avraham’s nephew, is taken captive. It’s written in Perek Yud Daled, Pasuk Yud Daled, “‫וַּיִׁשְמַ֣ע‬ ‫אַבְָר֔ם ּכִ֥י נִׁשְּבָ֖ה אָחִ֑יו וַּיֶָ֨רק אֶת־חֲנִיכָ֜יו יְלִיֵד֣י בֵיתֹ֗ו ׁשְמֹנָ֤ה‬ ‫עָׂשָר֙ ּוׁשְלׁ֣ש מֵאֹ֔ות וַּיְִרּדֹ֖ף עַד־ּדָֽן‬,” which means, “When Avram heard that his kinsman’s [household] had been taken captive, he mustered his retainers, born into his household, numbering 318, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.” Rashi explains on the word "‫ "חֲנִיכָ֜יו‬that it’s written without a yud so it is read "‫"חֲנִיכָ֜ו‬, meaning “his trained one,” which is referring to Eliezer. The Kli Yakar explains “Eliezer” in gematria is 318, and that’s how we know it’s Continued on page 6

that if they knew she was his wife, they would kill him in order to have her, so she should pretend to be his sister.

This comes from how the word Eli-Ezer means “My G-d Helps,” which shows Avraham passed yet another of the tests of faith Hashem has sent, but the tests continue.

As seen in Perek Tet Zayin, Pasuk Gimmel, “ ‫ׂשַָר֣י אֵֽׁשֶת־אַבְָר֗ם‬ ‫וַּתִּקַ֞ח‬ ‫אֶת־הָגָ֤ר הַּמִצְִרית֙ ׁשִפְחָתָּ֔ה‬ ‫מִּקֵץ֙ עֶׂ֣שֶר ׁשָנִ֔ים לְׁשֶ֥בֶת אַבְָר֖ם‬ ‫ּבְאֶֶ֣רץ ּכְנָ֑עַן וַּתִּתֵ֥ן אֹתָּ֛ה לְאַבְָר֥ם‬ ‫אִיׁשָּ֖ה לֹ֥ו לְאִּׁשָֽה‬,” which means, “So Sarai, Avram’s wife, took her maid, Hagar the Egyptian—after Avram had dwelt in the land of Canaan ten years—and gave her to her husband Avram as concubine.” Rashi explains that

the reason it discusses the detail of the ten years is to show why this had to happen. He explains that after ten years of being married to a woman, if she doesn't bring you children, you should take another wife so you can. This shows that Avraham cared so much about following Hashem that he would do everything in his power to follow him. Hashem wanted to make a great nation out of him, and he needed offspring to be able to, so he needed to have children with the maidservant because the ten year period of time with his wife had run out. The last of the ten tests that can be found in Parshas Lech Lecha is when Hashem commands Avraham to get a circumcision.

As seen in Perek Yud Zayin, Pasuk Cuf Daled, “‫וְאַ֨בְָרהָ֔ם‬ ‫ּבֶן־ּתִׁשְעִ֥ים וָתֵׁ֖שַע ׁשָנָ֑ה ּבְהִּמֹלֹ֖ו ּבְׂשַ֥ר עְָרלָתֹֽו‬,” which means, “Avraham was 99 years old when he circumcised the esh of his foreskin.” Once again, Avraham passes another of Hashem’s tests with ying colors. The Radak explains that Avraham had the prophecy to get circumcised at the age of 99 and didn't even want to wait until he was 100 to do it, and he quickly ran to serve Hashem.

In this parsha, we see a glimpse of the tests that Hashem sent to Avraham. At rst glance, these can be seen in a negative light, but once it’s more carefully looked at, it was really just Hashem giving him the opportunity to prove his faith. Hashem does the same thing for every Jew. He puts us in this world with a purpose deep within us whether it's planting the rst seed of Judaism in the world, saving someone’s life, or simply just serving Him. Throughout our lives, G-d sends us tests to bring us closer to Him and assess our faith in Him. He really just wants the best for us. Instead of looking at our hardships as a punishment, let’s look at them as tests from Hashem, just like He gave to Avraham Avinu.

Hot take: Rats are amazing. I know what you’re thinking, “Ew, rats? Does she mean those rodents who eat through your cars and walls? The gross little creatures who spread huge amounts of diseases like the literal Black Plague?” Yes, I do. While I understand that they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, rats get a worse rep than they deserve. They are empathetic, smart creatures who are actually adorable once you get past the stigma surrounding them. Not everyone is going to agree with me immediately, and I get that. Especially when we’ve been fed anti-rat propaganda our entire lives, but please give me a chance and hear me out.

Rats are extremely friendly and family oriented. While rats do need another rat companion to be happy and healthy, they are still able to bond with their humans. According to many rat owners, their rats treat them as if they were a giant rat. Rats are very good at communicating what they want. Whether they want to be picked up or fed, they will make their needs known.

This is good for you as a rat owner since it allows you to better care for your rat and it keeps them happier. Rats love to play with their fellow rats, as well as with their humans. They will wrestle and ght like dogs, and some even prefer to cuddle. Studies have shown that rats sometimes even laugh while playing.

Rats are smarter than most people give them credit for. They are not only intelligent socially, but they are also good at problem solving and thinking through their actions. Studies show that rats show empathy, strategize, adapt to new environments, and even dream. There is a reason why we use rats in labs. Rats are actually very similar to humans. This could be an insult if they had the brains of a Giant Panda (which are really dumb animals), but once you understand how amazing and smart rats are, there is no reason to be offended. Like most people, rats are food motivated and will happily learn new tricks for treats. Unlike most people, however, the rats are actually persistent enough to learn the trick.

This is all ne and dandy but I hear you thinking, “Hannah, I still think rats are gross. Again, they literally started the Black Plague.” To this I will respond twofold. One, eas actually started the Black Plague, not rats, but I see how that’s not a good argument for their cleanliness. Second, domesticated rats are clean animals. Unlike wild rats, your pet rat will not go digging for scraps in your trash or car pipes. Rats spend a lot of time grooming themselves, fellow rats, and even their humans. Some rats even make a “trash pile” in their enclosures to keep it tidy. Rats can even be litter trained, just like cats.

Now, I don’t want you to run out and get a pet rat because of this article. While rats are amazing and adorable, they require a lot of space, time, and attention. They also cost a lot to keep healthy since they are considered “exotic pets” and need to go to a specialized vet. The worst part about living with, bonding, and loving a rat is that they have short lifespans. They only live up to three years, which makes it hard emotionally for their owners. Growing attached to the rat only to have it die soon after is a hard thing to go through. I get that. I hope that when you see a rat now you are less likely to freak out. Instead, think of how amazing, smart, and cute they are.

Non ction is raw and based entirely off of real world problems. It is also the foundation for every other type of book. Water is raw, plain, and the foundation for every other drink.

Dystopian ction takes place in a world where most people are either barely scraping by, or they’re living in the super rich areas. Vegetable soup is a “drink” that is not expensive at all, but at the same time it’s lling and delicious.

Realistic Fiction Smoothies and realistic ction are both made up of many different components, like all the fruit that goes into a smoothie, and all the facts that go into realistic ction. At the same time, neither are completely natural.

Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) Sci- is close enough to reality to be “realistic,” while still being equally close to fantasy. Seltzer is close enough to water to be considered “healthy,” but the avored seltzers are equally close to soda.

Historical Fiction Tea is a drink that is featured in many historical stories and time periods. Tea is also basic but with many additions available, which is similar to historical ction, which has the basic history with many additions.

Mystery Mystery is down to earth and purely based on facts.

Black coffee is simple coffee and includes no sweeteners or other arti cial additions.

Fantasy Both fruit punch and fantasy books are enjoyable and entirely arti cial. Unlike some other genres, fantasy is based entirely on a fake world, as opposed to a real world, just like fruit punch is based entirely on arti cial avoring.

Tips From a Straight

Student

By Elizabeth Valeriano ('23) It can be pretty hard to get straight A’s in all of your classes. It requires a lot of hard work, time, and effort, but it can be done. Fortunately over the past few years, I have been able to get straight A’s in all of my classes, even in my APs and honors classes. Since I have managed to do that for my entire high school career thus far, I have some tips I can share with you to help you achieve the same.

Prioritize Homework This is my biggest tip that I have for anyone who wants to get an A in a class.

It’s not going to happen unless you make your homework your biggest priority.

This means that sometimes you might have to give up hanging out with friends after school. If you’re a very social person, this might be hard for you, but remember, you always have Shabbos to hang out with your friends.

Don’t Procrastinate Not only do you have to prioritize homework, but you also can’t push it off until right before it’s due. I recommend starting your homework as soon as you get home from school. That way you have plenty of time to do it, and you might nd yourself with extra time at night to just chill. I also highly recommend starting your homework the day that you get it. Sometimes it can be tempting to push it off, but do not do this! Sometimes we underestimate how long it will take to do an assignment, so if you start it the day that you get it, then you can make sure that you have enough time to complete it. Also, if you have extra time in class, start your homework then. That way you can get it done as soon as possible.

Extra Credit If your grade isn’t as good as you would like it to be, don’t be afraid to ask the teacher for extra credit. More times than not, they are willing to give it to you if they see that you really are trying. Also, do extra credit assignments even if your grade is really good. There’s no guarantee that your grade will stay that high by the end of the quarter, so doing an extra credit assignment now can help you later on.

If you want to get an A on a test, you have to study a lot. There’s not really a way around it. I highly recommend spending any free time that you have studying for tests coming up. If you get to school early and you have some time before davening, that’s the perfect opportunity to study for a test, especially for one that you’re taking that day. Also, I recommend that you start studying the day a teacher announces a test, even if it’s a week away. The more you study, the more likely you are to get a better grade.

Ask Your Teacher for Help Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher for help. Sometimes you might feel embarrassed to ask your teacher a question about something that might seem simple, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s always better to ask a question about something simple now and get the answer right on a test or assignment than it is to not ask it at all and then get the question wrong.

(Shout out to Mr. McCann, I’ve asked him a lot of these types of questions over the past few years.)

Don’t Get Discouraged Lastly, try not to get discouraged when you don’t do as great on a test as you thought you would. Always try to learn from your mistakes, so if you didn’t do as well on one test, try to study in a different way, and that can help you for your next test.

Also, just because you got a lower grade on one test doesn’t mean your quarter grade or semester grade will stay that low. It always ends up averaging out. So, don’t let a B on one test discourage you. You can still end up with an A in the class by the end of the quarter!

Ample Apple Antics!

By Adina Steiner ('24) Now that it’s nally autumn and leaving the house won’t cause you to melt, one great activity for the family is to go apple picking. If you happen to take too many apples, here are some fun things you can do with them!

Make apple pie. Apple pies can require anywhere from 5-10 apples, sometimes even more. It’s a good use of apples if you have so many that you don’t know what to do with them.

Obviously, you can eat the apples. They’re delicious healthy snacks to eat whenever.

Surprise a friend.

Who doesn’t love apples? Giving some extra apples to a friend would be an amazing gift!

Juice them. If you have a juicer, you can make homemade apple juice with your extra fruit. Everything tastes better homemade, so it’s worth a try!

Make caramel apples.

Caramel apples are one of the easiest, yet tastiest snacks to make with apples. All you need is some caramel to coat your apple all around!

Make an apple photoshoot. Find a cute backdrop somewhere around the house and make your apple look pretty. For any artsy person, it can be a fun challenge to get the most amazing picture of an apple.

What do you do “after the bell?”

I sew my own clothes and alter my current wardrobe to make them work for me.

How long have you been doing this for?

I have been sewing my own clothes for around a year and a half.

How did you get into this hobby?

During the pandemic, my younger sister started a sewing class, so my mom rented a sewing machine from a friend. She noticed that when class was not going on I was using the machine a lot, and she decided to invest in a sewing machine for me and my sisters to share. Ever since we got it, I use it so much, and spend a lot of money buying other sewing materials that it is basically mine now.

What was your rst big accomplishment when you started with your hobby?

My rst project of taking in the sides of a dress that was slightly too big on me was my rst real accomplishment. I’ve also made a shirt completely on my own, and that took me a very long time to nish.

What have you learned from doing this hobby?

I have learned that most of the clothes that you buy require a lot more skill than you probably think it does. It also takes a really long time and a ton of practice to get even decent at something. Even after a year and a half of sewing, my projects still don’t always look professional.

Goldie’s Guidance Dear Goldie, School has been in session for two months already and I’m barely getting by. I don’t know how much longer I can deal with it!

I know I’m making school sound bad, but there is only one thing holding me together: the candy jar in Mrs. Plotitsa’s of ce. This candy jar is not any ordinary rusty candy jar, it glows out from Mrs Plotitsa’s of ce and reels in the girls in the GMSG. I know that might sound silly, but that candy works wonders. She restocks it every once in a while and when she does, it’s the light in my life. If you ever nd yourself walking the halls of the GMSG, you'll witness how amazing the candy jar is. Although this candy jar full of delicious chocolate sounds great, the girls are monsters, and they eat all the candy before I can even get one. They somehow manage to nish the whole jar before the rst period is even over! Goldie, without that candy, how will I survive? PLEASE HELP ME!!!.

Sincerely, ChocoLover99 Dear ChocoLover99, Thank you so much for writing to me. Firstly, I am so sorry to hear that school starting back up has been hard for you. Back in my day, there wasn't even a candy jar to keep me going so you should count your blessings. When I was in school, we were running from bombs and living on a penny a day. I know how a small thing like a piece of ribbon from the ground can make your day.

Here are a few ideas I have come up with to help your situation. First of all, write a list of all the good things you have in your life. Really emphasize how this chocolate jar affects you and how much it means to you. Then you are going to take this list, handwritten of course, and mail it to the chocolate lady. Please use snail mail, with a thematically appropriate stamp and a wax seal. Write that you need her to save you chocolate. The chocolate is literally saving you. This should pull on her heartstrings just enough to make her empathize with you and she will make sure to make you your own personal jar of chocolate. I wish you luck on all your chocolate endeavors, and I hope school gets better as time goes on.

Letter From the Editor Dear Readers, I hope you enjoyed this month’s issue of the Goldie Globe. As featured in this week's Dvar Torah on the Parsha, we see that Hashem sent many tests to Avraham in order to help him to learn and grow as a person. Hashem didn’t send these tests in order to try to trick Avraham and get him to fail, but they were there in order to help him overall with his relationship with Hashem. This is important to remember as we go through life. For students, it’s important to remember this when we have tests in our classes; although it can be hard and even stressful at times, we have these tests in order to increase our knowledge so that we become well-rounded people. Even if you’re not a student, this lesson is important to remember as we go through the challenges of our daily lives.

Everything happens for a reason, and things that may be hard now will help us to learn and grow as people. With that, I wish you all a Good Shabbos!
