The Recent Rise in Celebrity Antisemitism and Its Backlash

arly Sunday morning, on October 23, rapper Kanye West, known professionally as Ye, tweeted threatening to go “death con 3 on Jewish people.” West claimed in another tweet that he was not being antisemitic by saying these things as black people are the real Jews. West’s twitter account was suspended soon after, but not before sparking public controversy. Many celebrities clapped back at West, standing in solidarity with the Jewish people. Influencer Kim Kardashian, West’s ex-wife, responded, tweeting “Hate speech is never okay or excusable. I stand together with the Jewish community and call on the terrible violence and hateful rhetoric towards them to come to an immediate end.”

Kanye West’s hateful words also caused a rise in antisemitism nationwide. However, antisemitism has always been an issue among celebrities. More than 20 years ago, in 1996, actor Mel Gibson allegedly asked

Jewish actress Winona Ryder if she was “an oven dodger,” alluding to the Holocaust. In 2004, he co-wrote and directed The Passion of the Christ, which was heavily criticized as having many antisemitic stereotypes. Perhaps most famously, in 2006, Gibson was pulled over for drunk driving and he blurted out "the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." He even asked the officer, who was Jewish, if he was a Jew. In 2013, singer Miley Cyrus stated in an interview how she does not want a “70-year-old Jewish man that doesn't leave his desk all day, telling me what the clubs want to hear."

Following West’s words however, banners were hung on the Los Angeles freeway by a white supremacist group known as the Goyim Defense League. The banners read “Honk if you know Kayne is right about the Jews.” The

people holding the banners were also giving Nazi salutes. Antisemitic flyers were recently found stuffed into mailboxes in Beverly Hills, Westwood, and Bel Air. During a recent Florida-Georgia football game, an antisemitic message approving of West’s tweet was projected onto the exterior of TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville.

West was dropped by clothing companies GAP and Balenciaga right away after making these hateful comments. Adidas, the main distributor of West’s shoe brand, Yeezys, took longer. Many celebrities put pressure on Adidas to finally let go of West and his brand. Josh Gad, the voice behind Disney Frozen’s Olaf and a descendant of Holocaust survivors, tweeted “Hey @adidas, is this right? Can he single out a single faith and group of people with hatred and vitriol and it doesn’t matter? Asking for a friend.” Kat Dennings, a Jewish American actress known for her roles in the Thor movies and Wandavision, tweeted, “The world is watching @adidas,” clearly showing distaste for the fact that West was still associated with them after everything he had done.

Interestingly, model Gigi Hadid also spoke out against Kanye West and antisemitism. Over the years, Gigi Hadid and her sister, Bella Hadid, have openly spoken out against Israel. The Hadids identify themselves as Palestinian and are avid supporters of the Free Palestine movement. Just this year, on October 7th, their father Mohamed spoke out against Jews and Zionists in an Instagram post. He compared Zionists to Hitler, claiming that the Zionists label the Palestinians as terrorists in their own land just like Hitler did with the Jews during the Holocaust in order to eradicate them from Germany.

On October 27, NBA Nets star Kyrie Irving shared a link to the antisemitic film Hebrew to Negroes: Wake Up Black America. This film talks about false origins of Jews and claims that the Holocaust never happened. Irving immediately received backlash from other players and owners within the NBA. At first, Irving refused to back down, claiming that no one will stop him from sharing his beliefs. However on November 2, Irving said he would donate $500,000 to anti-hate causes along with the AntiDefamation League. The Nets decided to do the same. On November 3, Irving shared a statement saying, “I am aware of the negative impact of my post towards the Jewish community and I take responsibility. I do not believe everything said in the documentary was true or reflects my morals and principles.” This was not deemed an adequate apology, however, and Irving was suspended from the NBA for five games and his partnership with Nike was dropped. Fortunately, after continued antisemitic incidents, more people continue to speak up

against antisemitism. Many have tried to blame West’s hateful comments in the past on his bipolar disorder, but he is now being called out nonetheless. “Whether or not Kanye West is mentally ill, there’s no question he is a bigot,” said Friends' actor David Schwimmer in an Instagram post. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis spoke out shortly after the incident saying “The holiest day in Judaism was last week. Words matter. A threat to Jewish people ended once in a genocide. Your words hurt and incite violence. You are a father. Please stop.” Comedian Amy Schumer shared a post saying “I support my Jewish friends and the Jewish people.” In the caption, she wrote “If you don't know what to post. Let's start with this. In the comments. Do you know what the Jewish community is afraid this will lead to? 1 in 2 people don't know the Holocaust happened. Stand up." Many more have spoken out and continue to against Kanye West and antisemitism. Yael Grobglas, a French-Israeli actress shared a post about the antisemitic demonstrations in Los Angeles. “I considered posting the horrifying pictures of Nazi salutes and disgusting antisemitic propaganda happening at the moment in LA, but I decided against giving those morons another platform for their hate. Instead, I ask that you consider history and understand why this is so despicable and scary. #neveragain #standagainstantisemitism“

Since, West and Irving have seemingly apologized for their misdeeds. In an interview, West expressed his frustration with getting hate for speaking about his views. He then reluctantly apologized for hurting anyone and said he is sorry for involving people with his trauma. West was let back onto Twitter and other social media platforms for awhile. However, it seems that these apologies were meaningless. West was seen socializing with renowned anti-semite and Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes. Last week, West brought him to a dinner with President Donald Trump at Mar-A-Lago. This brought about a lot of backlash for both West and Trump and shows that West is not serious in his apologies. Just this week, West went on the show InfoWars and said, "I like Hitler." He then posted a Star of David with a swastika in the center on Twitter and had his account banned once again. Irving, however, has also issued an apology to the Jewish people and is back to playing for the Nets.

It is clear that although West's and Irving’s antisemitic comments have made headlines as of late, they are not the only celebrities to have made antisemitic remarks recently. More and more celebrities over the years have said things against Israel and against the Jewish people, but West’s comments have brought it to everyone’s attention once again. It’s very important that as Jews, we are careful with which celebrities we follow and support and make sure that we are not supporting those who have a clear hatred for Jews.

The Decline of The Marvel Cinematic Universe

he Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been making movies and TV shows since Iron Man (2008), and has around 30 movies and TV shows to date. Towards the beginning of the franchise, Marvel was releasing new movies every year or every other year. Now, Marvel is releasing movies every few months, with four movies and even more TV shows that came out in 2021. With the constant stream of movies and shows, many people feel that Marvel is now focusing more on quantity over quality. People have seen a decline in the quality of the plot, the CGI, and the characters.

The plot and comedy are the main reason many people watch Marvel, however Marvel is quickly losing both of those qualities. People are comparing the plot of more recent movies, such as Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), to previous movies, such as Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), and many prefer the concise, simple plot of the earlier movies as opposed to the rambling, repetitive plot of the more recent additions. In more recent movies, Marvel has been exploring the idea of the multiverse, alternate realities, leading to chaotic and confusing story arcs. People are disappointed in the chaotic plot and endings of recent Marvel projects and are nostalgic for the older Marvel plots.

(2021) introduced an entirely new race of superheroes and many people are upset over the way it unraveled the MCU. The Marvel comics introduced many characters over the span of thousands of comics. However, Marvel is attempting to introduce as many of these characters as possible into the Cinematic Universe in less than 100 movies, causing their introductions to be sloppy and confusing. Love-interests in the MCU are also becoming crazier and more far-fetched. People are upset over Loki’s love-interest introduced in Loki (2021), who is a female version of himself. This blatant display of narcissism makes Marvel seem desperate for new and unique love-interests. The MCU used to use its main characters to convey comedy, with many of its characters being sarcastic and funny. However, now, Marvel adds many arbitrary characters when they feel that shows or movies aren’t funny enough, such as Madisynn in SheHulk (2022). While Marvel still has an extremely large fan-base, it is rapidly losing fans because of its declining plots, CGI, and characters.

Furthermore, Marvel has achieved many incredible feats using CGI, however, that is also rapidly weakening. People have been comparing CGI masterpieces such as Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) to more recent CGI renderings such as She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022). Many people believe that the bad CGI is because Marvel’s VFX (visual effects) team isn’t unionized, leading to them being worked harder and paid less. Whatever the reason is, it is evident that Marvel’s CGI is rapidly deteriorating.

Additionally, Marvel's characters are worsening. Their new characters, love-interests, and comedic relief characters all leave much to be desired. Marvel’s Eternals

There is also the matter of Stan Lee’s death in 2018 that has most likely contributed to Marvel’s decline. Stan Lee has written over 3,000 Marvel comics since it came out in 1939. When the MCU first started, Stan Lee was very closely involved with the adaptations and had a hilarious cameo in each movie, with his last cameo being in Avengers: Endgame (2019), even though he had already passed away at the time of the movie’s release. Stan Lee’s death caused Marvel to lose a large percentage of its fan base, and its decline in quality is not helping to win them back.

Although the MCU is still a very popular movie franchise, many people, fans and haters alike, agree that more recent Marvel projects are disappointing. If Marvel is interested in growing their fan base, or even keeping it the size it is, they need to return to the quality over quantity system they had when they first started creating movies.

Embracing Shomer Negiah

homer Negiah is a halacha that prohibits one from touching a person of the opposite sex. Though this halacha is just as important as observing Shabbos and Kashrus, many find shomer negiah particularly hard to keep. This concept is first introduced in Vayikra Perek Yud Chet Pasuk Vav, which states, “֙שיִא שיִ֥א א֥ל ו֔רָשְב

־לֶא

ו֖ברקִת ה.” This means “None of you men shall come near anyone of his own flesh to uncover nakedness: I am Hashem.” Perek Yud Chet Pasuk Yud Tet also mentions this concept, and it says “הָ֖שִא־לֶאְו ב֔רקִת א֣ל הָ֑תָאְמֻט תַ֣דִנְב הָֽתָורֶע תו֖לַגְל,” which means “Do not come near a woman during her menstrual period of impurity to uncover her nakedness.” These seem as if they are only prohibiting a man from touching his wife during a certain time, but they are also where we get that a person can’t touch someone of the opposite sex unless they are married to them.

הָ֑ורֶע

Being shomer negiah is something that many teenagers and young adults find hard to do, which is why it is very important to delve deeper into the topic and learn different reasons as to why it is so important. Although people should be encouraged to do something based solely on the fact that Hashem commanded us to do so, it still can be hard for some to want to do it without being given other reasons that give insight as to why something was commanded. This is why it’s important for people to read books about the reasons why keeping a certain mitzvah is important. The Magic Touch by Gila Manolson is a good example of a book that gives many reasons as to why it is important for someone to be shomer negiah. Manolson first published this book in 1992, and in it she discussed many different reasons why one should be shomer negiah. Her explanations are easy for one to

conceptualize, and she gave numerous examples where people had not been shomer negiah and later realized why that was wrong and learned from their mistakes. Although this book is 30 years old, all of the examples and scenarios are very relevant today, and are arguably even more relevant in this day and age than they were back then.

In the first chapter of The Magic Touch, Manolson discusses the effect that touch can have on a person. She explains that touch is something that connects people more deeply to each other. One example she gives is two people arguing and then one putting their hand on the other to try to calm them down. This small action has a strong effect on the person, and they instantly start to calm down a bit. This shows that touch isn’t just a casual thing; it really has a strong effect on others. Manolson also explains that touch creates a bond between two people. By touching someone, it can fog your vision of how close you actually are with them, as it can create a false sense of closeness with that person. In order to be

able to really tell how close of a relationship you have with someone, you have to take away any physical part of the relationship that you have with them. If you start a relationship with someone of the opposite sex but you don’t have physical contact with them, that allows for you to develop an authentic bond with them.

Some people might hear all of this and think this makes sense, but then they might think to themselves “but if I’m shomer negiah, won’t I be missing out?”

They might think that they need to have these experiences in order to grow as a person. Especially in this day and age, people might be influenced to not be shomer negiah since they see people having physical relationships with each other in the shows and movies that they watch, and also in the books that they read. Manolson explains that you’re not missing out on anything by being shomer negiah. Being shomer negiah allows for your future relationship with your spouse to be even more special. She also gave examples of ba’alei teshuvah, which are people who weren’t religious at a point in their lives but eventually returned to Judaism, who said that they wish they could go back and undo certain

things that they did, including not being shomer negiah Although it may be hard at times to remain shomer negiah, it’s important to remember that restraining yourself now will make future relationships even more meaningful.

It’s important for us to remember that shomer negiah is just as important as keeping Shabbos and kosher. That being said, it can be really difficult for teenagers and young adults to want to be shomer negiah. When one finds keeping a certain mitzvah difficult, that means it’s especially important for them to delve deeper into an understanding of that mitzvah and the reason it is so important. The Magic Touch is a book that does just that, and it’s one that is highly recommended to teenagers and young adults to read. This book goes into many more reasons why shomer negiah is important, and Manolson gives even more examples that people will be able to relate to.

Some people might not be open to being shomer negiah and therefore don’t want to learn more about it, but by doing that, they’re closing themselves off from growing spiritually. Being content with your current spiritual level and not wanting to learn more about mitzvot means you’ll remain stagnant with your spiritual level and relationship with Hashem. It’s important for everyone to learn more about different mitzvot, even ones that would seem hard to follow, in order to grow in your relationship with Hashem. We should all strive to grow in our relationships with Hashem.

Chesed Mondays are Back, Baybeee!

hesed Mondays are back and better than ever. After two and a half long years, the GMSG has finally been able to reinstate Chesed Monday. Chesed Monday is where the GMSG spends part of Monday afternoon participating in chesed opportunities. In previous years, some students participated in Special Olympics Bowling, while others visited residents at the Jewish Home. This year, there’s a new program, Chesed Begins at Home, that students can participate in. The majority of the current GMSGers have never been able to participate in Chesed Mondays, as the only current students that have participated in it are the seniors. Even the current seniors’ involvement in this activity was cut short due to the pandemic, but they are excited for it to start up again. Many students have looked forward to participating in these chesed activities after hearing great things from GMSG alumni, and are excited to jump in and experience it for themselves.

Special Olympics Bowling is a weekly activity where people with special needs have the opportunity to come together and bowl every Monday. The entire bowling alley is rented out for the athletes to have a good time and bring their families for a fun and relaxing activity. As Covid has come to a close, the administrators have been working hard to bring back Special Olympics Bowling because of its success in the past. Special Olympics Bowling started again back in September, and the GMSG has had the opportunity to join in to volunteer since the end of October. Already, it has been a great success. The girls were assigned lanes where they talk to the bowlers and cheer them on. The bowlers love it, which is shown through the constant smiles on their faces. This is an amazing opportunity for the participants to get out of the house and just have a good time, and for the volunteers to join in their fun. It makes each and every one of the girls feel good to know that we can make their days through something so simple for us. Many students were a little nervous at first to start volunteering at Special Olympics Bowling, but their

nerves immediately went away as soon as they walked into the bowling alley. There have been many positive reports back from the girls, all saying how sweet the bowlers are.

Not only does the school offer the Special Olympics Bowling, but they also have Chesed Begins at Home. Chesed Begins at Home is another chesed opportunity for girls to help around in the community. The program involves girls from our school going to people in the community's houses and helping them with whatever they may need. They help with the children, help make dinner for them, or clean up around the house. For example, some of the students go and watch the kids play on the playground because the parents haven't gotten home from work yet. Many girls also help the kids with their homework. The parents are always so thankful for the girls’ help because they don’t have to worry about what their children are doing when they are not finished with work. Not only do the girls and parents love this program, but the kids are so happy to have someone give them their full attention and play with them. We also have one more chesed opportunity on Monday that one of our GMSGers is taking part in. Pesi Katz (‘23) volunteers at Le Bonheur, which is something that she has been doing in different ways for many years and is very interested in. “I love my Monday volunteer shifts at Le Bonheur! I deliver toiletries to people’s rooms in case they forgot something. I love being able to help people even in a small way, and seeing the smile on their face when I come to their room makes me feel so good. I’m so glad I have this opportunity to help people in need!”

With a new year comes new opportunities, and this year the GMSG really won the lottery with our opportunity to start back up Chesed Mondays. It’s truly an unreal experience for each and every girl whether they are helping out someone at their home, the bowling alley, or in LeBonheur Hospital. Chesed Mondays have already begun to be the highlight of the GMSGers week and all the girls are excited to see what the next Monday has in store!

Parshas Vayeitzei: Taking People For Granted

n Parshas Vayeitzei, Yaakov leaves Be'er-Sheva and heads to Charan. On the way, he makes a stop for the night and has his famous ladder dream, where he sees angels going up and down a ladder. After the dream, he makes a promise that the house of Hashem would be built there and continues into Charan. In Charan, he tends to his uncle Lavan’s sheep, and he soon marries his two daughters, Rachel and Leah. Following all this, Leah has six children, and Yaakov marries the maid servants Bilha and Zilpah. The four wives have 12 sons in total. Six years later, Yaakov and his family leave.

In Perek Chaf Chet, Pasuk Yud, which is the very beginning of the parsha, it says; ”אֵ֥צֵיַו ְֶלֵ֖יַו עַבָ֑ש רֵ֣אְבִמ ב֖קֲעַי הָנֽרָח,” meaning, “Yaakov left Be'er-Sheva, and set out for Charan.” However this pasuk is troublesome. The amount of detail in the pasuk feels unnecessary. Why does the parsha need to mention that Yaakov leaves Be'erSheva to go to Charan? Can it not just say that he goes to Charan? There seemingly is no point in adding the part that he leaves, since that is a given. Rashi explains that the parsha mentions Yaakov’s departure from Be'er-Sheva to show the impact of a rabbi leaving a place. Rabbis often go unappreciated while they are in a place, and once they leave, so does the glory and splendor around them, making their absence felt among the people.

The Kli Yakar explains that this isn’t the only time an important figure in the Torah left a city or town. Avraham and Sarah, as well as Yitzchak and Rivka, came and went from multiple places, yet only now the parsha makes a big deal about someone leaving. For example, when Avraham and Sarah left Egypt, there were no more people on their

high spiritual level left in the area. The change in spirituality in the area is obvious and blatant. However, in this week’s parsha when Yaakov sets out, there are still two more people of his caliber, Yitzchak and Rivka, still in Be'er-Sheva.

The pasuk is telling us here that even if there are other spiritual people in a place, the departure of one still causes an impact.

The Beis Halevi offers another explanation as to why the pasuk says both that Yaakov left Be’erSheva and he went to Charan. Usually, when a person leaves a place, it’s for one of two reasons: either they have a specific place they want to go to, or they just want to leave the place they’re living in currently, but they don’t really care where they go. Yaakov, however, was traveling for both of these reasons. His mother told him to run and escape his brother, Esav, and his father told him to go to Charan to find a wife. Because of his dual purpose in leaving, it is only appropriate to state that he left Be’erSheva and he also left for Charan.

It is an unfortunate but true fact that people often don’t realize what they have until it’s gone. When a person who is very spiritual, or close to G-d, is in town, their presence isn’t noted nearly as much as when they are gone. Even when other people of that stature are in town, there is an impact when someone so special leaves. From this week’s parsha, we can learn to acknowledge what we have, as it is all a gift from Hashem. It’s important to always count our blessings and thank Hashem for what we have. We shouldn’t wait until something is gone to begin appreciating it.

Chanukah Foods Officially Rated

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, filled with the most wonderful food. Obviously I’m talking about one the most famous holidays of the year, Chanukah! However you spell it, Chanukah is still the amazing and joyous holiday we know it to be. One of the most important parts of the holiday is the food. There are many iconic Chanukah foods, but which one is the best? Let’s find out!

Latkes

One of the most essential Chanukah foods is latkes. I personally find latkes to be incredibly delicious. Even after eight days straight of eating them, you could still give me a giant plate to consume and I wouldn’t be sick of them. Now the question is, are latkes better with or without sour cream and applesauce? For me, the latke experience is only elevated when adding toppings. In my opinion, latkes are a 10/10, maybe even an 11/10 if they’re made to perfection.

Sufganiyot

Gelt

Now, onto another delicious fried food: sufganiyot. When it comes to sufganiyot, I obviously love them, but only when they are really fresh. Unlike latkes, sufganiyot become a bit soggy after a couple days (if they even last that long, and with me around, I seriously doubt it). It’s also a bit of a process when it comes to the actual making of the food. I would rate the suganiyot an 8/10, but only because of the complexity of making them, de

sometimes being made out of chocolate. Kids (and adults) will get a little mesh bag of four or or save until the next year, which I wouldn't recommend. In my opinion, chocolate gelt is a bit of a let down. It looks very appealing, but the execution is a bit disappointing. This might be because I don’t like milk chocolate as much as other people, but chocolate gelt tastes a bit waxy and it’s very quick to melt if you’re holding it in your hands. I would rate milk chocolate gelt a 6/10, but I do really like the dark chocolate gelt, which I rate a 7.5/10.

At the end of the day, even if I don’t love all the foods we eat on Chanukah, I still love the holiday. I hope everyone has an amazing and meaningful Chanukah Chag Chanukah Sameach!

#1

Pay Close Attention

Throughout the year, listen for things that the person admires, is interested in, or wants to replace but hasn’t done so themselves. That way you can get them something that they actually want and will use. It’s best to do this several weeks in advance so that you can have a good idea of what to get them.

#2

Make a list of what the person is interested in

This way when the time comes to get the present you know exactly what to get them!

#3

Include a card in the gift

Write a short but sweet description about how much the person means to you and how lucky you are to have them in your life. If you include a sweet note, it makes your gift more meaningful and they will love it even more!

#4

Practice Wrapping Gifts

If you give someone a nice and meaningful present but it has a sloppy presentation, it will offset the thoughtfulness of the gift no matter what it is. Practice wrapping gifts so that when you wrap their present, it will look nicer. They will definitely notice the effort you put into the gift’s presentation.

#5

Buy gifts ahead of time

Get ahead of the game and buy gifts in advance. If you wait until the last minute, it may not be in the stores. Buying ahead can save you from last-minute worries and timing issues.

#6

Make a Homemade Gift

Personally made gift baskets or even, for example, a framed photo are all ideas that are inexpensive but are very meaningful. These gifts will feel extra personal but can be just as nice as a store bought gift

GMSG Community Event!

The GMSG is super excited to introduce our new event: Market Night! We hope for all the women in our community to join us for a night of shopping and fun. Shop for Chanukah gifts, shop for yourself, and shop for your family. We have all sorts of vendors coming in who are excited to share their products with the community. We are proud to welcome local and out of town businesses. It can be hard to get a lot of necessities living in a small town, so we are bringing in all kinds of different stores. We hope that you will come, eat, and have fun with us!

Goldie’s Guidance

Dear Goldie,

I need to drop out. And I mean that literally, with every fiber of my being. I hate going to school every morning and working until midnight every single night. I just want to be done with it. I’m already a senior, Goldie. It’s been almost four whole years of this, but now its time to apply to college and I'm realizing I have to do it all over again. I am just so tired of all of it. I do want to make money and get a job, and I know I need to go to college to do that but I just don’t want to go to school anymore. Maybe I could live with my parents forever, and they would take care of me. I think that I would be perfectly content with just living off of my parents for the rest of my life. Trust me Goldie, if I dropped out, I would be much happier. Please help me Goldie! I need some advice, what are some tips to help me stay sane during these long school hours?

Sincerely, ImSoTired351

Dear ImSoTired351,

I am sorry that you have to deal with that. I am sure it is hard to do the same thing every day and have so much work. The plus side is that you are already most of the way done! All that's left now is to just get into college and then you don’t have to care anymore! Easy as pie. For now, until your acceptance letters come in, I would suggest babying yourself. Make yourself a fun chart, use stickers or candy as positive reinforcement for getting through school and doing your work. And if nothing else is working, here's a little trick from my day, you could threaten to drop out to the administration and see if they do anything to lighten your load. It worked for me, well until I got kicked out. So use that tip at your own risk. I wish you the best! Goldie © accepts no responsibility for any harm that might arise out of following her advice. Any advice you follow you do so at your own risk. Please read all terms and conditions before following any of Goldie’s Guidance © tips and tricks.
