ROSE ROYALTY

The Texas Rose Festival celebrates Tyler's rose-growing heritage and the beauty of the rose, the most splendid flower of all. This year's rose queen is Molly Louise Berry, the daughter of Ms. Elizabeth Lawrence Berry and Mr. Scott Reed, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Craig Berry. Serving as Rose Festival Princess is Olivia Bristol Young, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Young Jr. The Duchess of the Rose Growers is Hadley Hills Brewer, the

daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brandon Jay Brewer. The Queen's Court also includes ladiesin-waiting from Tyler families, out-of-town duchesses, escorts and the children who serve as the queen's attendants. The festival's traditions are all about celebrating Tyler, the Rose Capital of America! The rose industry has been a part of the Tyler economy for more than 100 years.

Tyler's Molly Louise Berry cherishes role

Being part of the Texas Rose Festival is a dream come true for 21-year-old Queen Molly Louise Berry.

Since a young age, Berry has admired the Rose Court and everything the Rose Festival means to the city of Tyler.

She said some of her earliest memories include cleaning up at the Queen’s Tea and helping girls who were part of the court get ready for their events. One of her fondest memories is being an attendant to 2007 Rose Queen Grace Ramey.

Berry’s family history with the Rose Festival began with her great grandparents. Around 50 members of her family have been involved with the event. In 2010, her mother was chairperson

of the Queen’s Tea and was on the tea committee last year.

Berry and her family have continued to be active volunteers of the Rose Festival throughout the years.

With so many years of being involved behind the scenes, Berry said she was honored to be the Queen this year and represent her hometown.

While she always wanted to be part of the court, Berry said she never anticipated being named the Queen. When she found out she would be Queen, Berry said she was shocked and “bawled her eyes out.”

“It’s just the biggest honor I could ever ask for. Being chosen to be a representative of our city is an honor no words can describe,” she said. “The

ROSE

fact that they chose me is just unbelievable.”

Getting to represent the community of Tyler is something Berry takes deep pride in.

“The city means everything to me,” she said. “It's my home, it's where I've grown up and where my whole family has grown up. It's my favorite place in the world.”

The sense of community in Tyler is something Berry said she has always admired and one of the many things that makes Tyler special. While it is a small city, no matter where you go you will meet someone from Tyler or people will know about it, she said.

Berry is always proud to tell someone where she is from.

Any time people ask about the city, Berry shares that it’s the Rose Capital of the World and that it’s “unlike any city in the whole world.” She always tells them, “You have to come – it's so much fun.”

As the Rose Queen, Berry has enjoyed a number of experiences such as summer rehearsals, cutting the ribbon for the opening of the Azalea and Spring Flower Trail, attending the Children’s Miracle Network Banquet and volunteering with the court at the East Texas Food Bank.

One of her favorite parts of all has been meeting the out of town women who are part of the Rose Festival.

“I love getting to know everyone and then finding mutual connections with so many people,” Berry said.

Berry was most looking forward to the coronation, parade, and Queen’s Tea. The exciting thing about the coronation is the fact Berry is a theater major, so she “really loves to be on stage,” she said.

The coronation is the formal presentation on stage of the Queen and her court. Once the court has its moment, the Queen is presented and reveals her dress to the public for the very first time.

The magnificent, elaborate gowns worn by the court always mesmerize the crowd gathered at the coronation, and rightfully so. Beads, diamonds, sequins and jewels adorn the dresses in an intricate design that is one of a kind.

Decorative embellishments on the gown and its beautiful train traditionally reflect the festival’s theme with specially unique designs for each Queen.

Berry of course had a say in what her dress would look like, but she didn’t have too many special requests – she knew it would be spectacular no matter what. Her one request was that the dress

embody everything the “Empires of Enchantment” theme represents.

“I love the theme so much,” Berry said. It’s so fabulous, and royal and elegant.”

When she’s not busy with Rose Festival activities, Berry is a student at Texas Christian University where she is pursuing a major in theater with a minor in political science. She is also an active member of her sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma where she is the spirit chair.

Berry is also an active volunteer in any way she can to support the cause and research of Cystic Fibrosis. This cause is close to her heart because one of her close friends was diagnosed at a young age, she said. She also offers her time in other ways such as drives and causes that support Tyler.

texas rose festival princess establishes family's footprint in court

Finding out the gender of your baby is a very monumental moment for expecting parents, but for Olivia Bristol Young's father, Robert E. Young, it was a different form of happiness when he found out he was having a baby girl.

“One of the favorite stories my mom loves to tell is the week after that Rose Festival, my parents had a sonogram appointment to find out if I was a girl or a boy. The first words out of my dad’s mouth after learning I was a girl were, ‘Oh my gosh, we better start saving for Rose Festival,’” Young said.

Serving as the 2022 Texas Rose Festival Princess, Young was honored to have the

opportunity and excited to make her dreams come true.

“When receiving the news, I felt incredibly lucky. I was not expecting at all. I always dreamt of it growing up,” she said.

Throughout her life, Young has always considered Rose Festival season as the happiest time of the year, she said.

“It honestly felt like Christmas, because you knew when October was coming around then you knew it was time again for the traditions,” she said.

Young said the festival is so much more than meets the eye.

“As a kid I was confused, because that is what

"As I grew up, I learned that while the pretty dresses and pageantry undoubtedly play a role, Rose Festival is so much more – it's about community, it's about history, it's about friendships and family traditions, but maybe most importantly it's about showcasing Tyler and the rose industry to the state of Texas, the country and even the world.”

I saw – pretty costumes that made all the girls look like a princess. As I grew up, I learned that while the pretty dresses and pageantry undoubtedly play a role, Rose Festival is so much more – it's about community, it's about history, it's about friendships and family traditions, but maybe most importantly it's about showcasing Tyler and the rose industry to the state of Texas, the country and even the world,” she said.

She was excited for her dress though, which makes her feel like Cinderella.

Community involvement is an important part of the Young family. Their efforts helped establish a new float in this year’s festival to highlight the Hispanic community of Tyler.

Young is the daughter of Virginia

(Ginger) from Fort Worth and Robert (Bob) who is from West Monroe, Louisiana.

With both parents not being from East Texas, Young considers herself as a good example of your parents not needing to be from East Texas in order to serve on the court. The Young family has put in a lot of volunteering and investment in the festival for decades, through time and support of the various events.

Young said as soon as her mother moved to Tyler in 2000, which happened to be Rose Festival weekend, she initially started volunteering backstage at the coronation while she was pregnant with

Olivia Bristol Young

Princess Olivia Bristol Young is the daughter of Mr. Robert (Bob) E. Young and Mrs. Virginia (Ginger) Young, of Tyler. She attends Auburn University where she is majoring in Pre-Veterinary and is a member of the Phi Mu sorority.

She is also a recipient of the Academic Charter Scholarship along with The Dr. Pat H. Barnes Centennial of Women Award. She is involved in various Phi Mu philanthropies including Children's Miracle Network and St. Judes. She’s also on the Dean's List.

Olivia is the first member of her family to serve as a member of the court. Her family has been involved with volunteering for years.

Prior to being Princess this year, Olivia has served the Texas Rose Festival as an Attendant Dresser in 2019; Attendant to the Queen in 2011; and Queen's Tea helper in 2010 and 2017.

Olivia’s mother, Ginger, has been actively involved in the festival for many years as well in several different areas including: Administrative Assistant to the President (Hal Bertram) (2015); Ladies Luncheon Chair (2015); Coronation Chair (2014 -- Cirque de la Rose); Coronation CoChair (Indochine -- 2012); Rose Show Co-Chair (2013); Attendants' Chair (2011); Wardrobe Chair (2009, 2008), Wardrobe Properties (Chair – 2007, committee 2006); Accessories (Chair, 2005, 2004, Committee 2000-2003); Queen’s Tea Committee (2021, 2010, 2009); Winn Morton Tribute Presentation Co-Chair (2019); Rose Festival Scholarship committee (2014-present); Duchess and Escort Sponsor to more than 20 families (20102022).

Olivia’s father Bob has served the festival as a member of Order of the Rose and Duchess and Escort Sponsor to more than 20 families from 2010 to 2022.

Other immediate family members of Olivia include her aunt Libby Tilley Hogg and husband Brooks.

her.

Her mother has served in more than a dozen positions and/ or committees in the festival since she first became involved. Her father has also been involved in serving the festival. Young herself has been involved in roles like attendant and tea helper over the years.

Throughout their participation and volunteering, Young said being behind the scenes is how she fell in love with the festival, especially with the unity it brought to the city.

“Every year I just saw the way it brought Tyler together and so many people. I feel like it's honestly very rare for a community to have something that is meaningful for everyone,” she said.

Young feels lucky to be this year's princess and the opportunity for her family to be involved in the court.

“We all feel incredibly lucky that our family was thought of,” she said. “It's a new tradition for us to finally be able to establish a footprint in the rose festival. It's very dear to us.”

The festival is a staple for East Texas and “puts us on the map,” she said.

“I’m really proud to be able to say that I’m helping, I’m really proud of where I come from and I’m happy to say I’m from East Texas and now that I'm participating in one of our East Texas biggest traditions, it just means a lot to be able to represent my community,” Young said.

Most importantly, she wants to encourage families from all backgrounds to learn about the festival and “start some new traditions for their family and children.”

Young is a Tyler native and attends Auburn University in Alabama where she is majoring in pre-veterinary medicine. She hopes to open her own vet clinic in the future and has always had a passion for animals. She is a member of the Phi Mu sorority.

Duchess of the Rose Growers takes pride in carrying on tradition

Duchess of the Rose Growers Hadley Hills Brewer, daughter of Brandon Jay Brewer and Kathryn Hills Brewer, is honored to carry on a family legacy in the 89th Texas Rose Festival.

“I am so honored to have been selected as the Duchess for this year's festival. My family has been involved with the festival for over three decades, so being able to carry on my family's legacy is something I am thrilled to do,” she said.

The history of the Rose Festival participation in the Brewer family goes back to 1966 including her grandfather Allen Hills, who helped design the Rose Garden and was involved with the festival for over 50 years.

Brewer noted the past efforts of growers and processors have made a profound impact on Tyler, as well as drawn national attention to the Texas Rose Festival.

“Being able to carry on my family’s legacy and represent the rose industry is something I will forever cherish,” Brewer said.

For Brewer, the traditions are something she really enjoyed being part of.

“Not only am I continuing the traditions of the festival, but also my family’s tradition of being in the festival,” she said. “The iconic traditions of the festival make it incomparable to any other festival. That being said, I am most excited for the coronation, as every participant

Brewer said being selected as Duchess was a dream come true.

“... I am excited to represent the rose industry and draw more attention to Tyler’s amazing roses,” Brewer said. “Drawing more attention to our amazing roses and rose growing industry is something that excites me.”

The rose industry has been a major industry in the Tyler area for decades. Located adjacent to the famous Tyler Rose Garden is the Tyler Rose Museum, which showcases and documents the history of the annual Texas Rose Festival.

Brewer shared one of the things she was most excited this year about was seeing all the beautiful dresses.

“I am ecstatic to see all the costumes come together on stage. For my costume in particular, it has

been amazing to see it come together,” Brewer said. “At my first few dress fittings, there was not much to the dress besides the foundations. Now, as my dress is being completed, it is incredible to see how all the small aspects of the dress make it amazing.”

Brewer was announced as Duchess of the Rose Growers in January along with the 2022 Rose Festival theme

“Empires of Enchantment.”

Brewer, a junior at University of Oklahoma, is in nursing school where she is concentrating on pediatric nursing.

“I plan on pursuing a job in the nursing field. I have thought about working as a pediatric nurse, as helping kids is something I love doing,” Brewer said. “I love kids and always have, so being able to help them in any possible

Prior to going to college, Brewer graduated from Grace Community School in 2020 where she played varsity soccer and softball all four years of high school. She was also involved with her youth group and church and was in the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society.

The summer after graduation Brewer was able to fulfill her love of working with children at a summer camp job at Camp Mystic.

“Camp Mystic is an all-girls Christian summer camp in Hunt, Texas on the Guadalupe River. The summer after high school I worked as a camp counselor for 9 year olds,” she said. “During the

30-day term, I led a variety of activities including water activities, soccer, cheer, and several others. I also mentored my campers throughout the month of June, led devotionals and grew with my campers throughout the term.”

Now in her third year of college Brewer, 20 and a member of Chi Omega, works closely with her sorority’s philanthropy efforts with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“We have a little girl we are sponsoring; being able to raise money for her and serve this amazing organization is something I love being a part of,” Brewer said. “She recently was able to go to Disney World and meet some of her most admired characters.”

DIVERSITY

The Texas Rose Festival is a grand showcase of Tyler's history and heritage. Countless traditions bring families together while also uniting the city's residents. For its 89th annual year, the Texas Rose Festival introduced a new

float specifically dedicated to the local Hispanic community to highlight their culture and contributions to Tyler. Since its inception and for years to come, the festival continues to celebrate the city and its people.

Celebrate our city

New float showcases Hispanic culture, traditions

In its 89th year, the Texas Rose Festival established a new float to celebrate the Hispanic community of East Texas. The budding tradition serves as a reminder of what the festival’s purpose has always been — to celebrate all of Tyler, its history, and its people.

More than 50 East Texas Hispanic girls made their debut in traditional quinceañera dresses for the annual parade. Attendees got a taste of Hispanic culture as they enjoyed sounds from a mariachi band, entertainment by Aztec and folklorico dancers, and more.

Although the doors have always been open for anyone to take part in the Texas Rose Festival parade, the local Hispanic community was formally invited to participate in 2022. A customized tribute float was made possible through a sponsorship by the Flowers Davis law firm, collaboration with local businesses, and joint efforts by an established committee and festival leaders.

The idea

Flowers Davis law firm was initially sponsoring the float for 2022 TRF Princess Olivia Bristol Young. That was until her mother and longtime Rose Festival volunteer Ginger Young had an even better idea.

Young, who is an immigration lawyer at the firm and conducts

Hispanic community outreach, felt like this sponsorship could serve as an opportunity to highlight Hispanic culture. Because of her efforts, the firm shifted gears to help the Hispanic community take part in the parade with its very own dedicated tribute float.

For Young, the most rewarding part of this effort was seeing the city’s diversity displayed on such a grand stage.

“The Hispanic community and the Latino community are such an integral part of what Tyler offers, so it’s fun to be able to play a small role in showing that,” she said.

The festival has always been open to the entire community, but because of the law firm’s sponsorship, other local partners, and Liz Ballard, Texas Rose Festival Association executive director, this year in particular a concerted effort was made to bring Tyler’s diversity into the limelight.

Ballard, who is also executive director of the Tyler Rose Museum, said the festival is an event for all of Tyler, so she was excited for the Hispanic community to partake in the 2022 parade.

“Our whole goal, as it continues today, is to celebrate our city, the mascot of our city — the rose — and we want our parade to be an event for all of the community. We’ve always had an open door invitation for our parade, it’s free to participate and there is an application process, but it’s not too tedious,” she said. “We’re just so delighted that the Hispanic community is going to be a part. I’m so proud to have the Hispanic and Latino community come out and show their civic pride and their heritage and what it means, so the

Texas Rose Festival | Souvenir Magazine114 ATTENDANTS DIVERSITY

rest of the community can take part and enjoy.”

Ballard added that showcasing the city’s diverse population is key.

“I think it’s so important that we’re able to honor each group in our community, and all the cultural traditions that we all hold. It’s very important to educate people of what makes us who we are, culturally, and personally. It’s just a gift that we can all share with the city,” she said.

Uniting Tyler

Paulina Pedroza called Oct. 15, 2022, the day of the parade, a “date that will make history.”

Pedroza, part of a planning committee for the tribute float, expressed how proud she was to be part of the process and her gratitude for the Flowers Davis sponsorship that allowed this idea to come alive. For her, this was a chance to highlight the Hispanic community’s special place in Tyler and publicly celebrate their culture with the rest of the community.

“We are Tyler, we are the reason roses blossom and the gardens are the best from all the areas, and every day we work with pride and responsibility. Tyler is very important to us and we’re grateful for the opportunity. It’s very fundamental to keep supporting each other like a whole community. It’s a festival with an 88-year-old history, and for this 89th year, the Hispanic community, with this call to participate in the festival, will make it grow more,” she said.

Float concept

The concept of the float revolved around the quinceañera tradition, which is the transition of a 15-year-old girl into womanhood through a celebration with cultural customs.

“As I learn more about the quinceañera and what it stands for within a family and with the community, it’s very similar to what we’re doing for our girls as part of the Rose Festival,” said Young said. “I just thought it would be fun to be able to celebrate quinceañeras, Hispanic Heritage Month, and the Rose Festival because they’re all part of this community.”

This new tradition was brought to life with the help of an established committee, including Young, Pedroza, Lilia Aparicio

and Cesar Angeles. A number of local businesses also contributed to make this possible, including lending services, products or other collaborations.

In the beginning, the goal was to find six girls, who had recently or about to have a quinceañera. to fill the float. Young reached out to Pedroza in August and consequently, weekly meetings were held to blend ideas and move the idea forward into reality ahead of the October festival. Very soon, interest grew and more than 50 girls ended up taking part in the festival, along with some chambelanes accompanying them.

Along with the girls on the float, more girls walked alongside the float in their elaborate dresses.

Pedroza was so proud to see the girls participating and said it was a way to “show off our princesses and queens of our homes, which are our daughters. Hispanic households save up a lifetime for a 15 celebration where our daughters become a woman.”

Participants also had the opportunity to attend the coronation event through the sponsorship of Young, who wants the girls to learn more about the historic yearly event that brings revenue to the city and is filled with traditions.

Young also hopes this will bring a spotlight to the true goal of the Texas Rose Festival, which is “more than the dresses” and more about uniting the community in celebration of Tyler’s heritage.

Fifteen-year-old Fabiola Carballo, who moved to Tyler at age 5, was one of the girls featured on the float. Carbello said this opportunity meant a lot to her and she was proud to represent Venezuela, where she was born.

“I just hope I’m a reminder to all people that had to leave their countries and be able to represent up there and everything they love in their country,” she said. “I always heard about the parade and how beautiful it is, and it’s a staple element of this town. I think it’s great that they’re recognizing a community that does so much and is a huge part of this city.”

She added that it’s a “beautiful thing” to see the city come together.

The planning committee and Texas Rose Festival Association have already started talking about the 2023 parade and plans to keep this tradition going for years to come.

The Texas Rose Festival Court puts in a lot of hours preparing for the big festival. Over the summer, the girls were busy in a local dance studio practicing their choreography.

Months ahead of the festival, Dance-N-Drill Studio Owner Lynn Ramey worked with the court to direct and teach the girls what they would be doing on stage during the Rose Festival.

“It’s all about posture and movement and posing, blocking, looking and moving beautifully,” Ramey said.

Ramey has been the choreographer for the Rose Festival for 24 years. Ramey teaches the entire court, including the children.

“There is a lot of hard work that the audience would never probably understand unless you watch. It’s very specific, it’s very detailed,” Ramey said. “Each participant has something unique to her choreography and her bows, and we put in hours of practice.”

Each girl has her own poses that Ramey works to create based off of the dresses, music they’re going to perform with and script. Ramey then works one-on-one with the girls to teach them their poses.

Ramey said despite all the hard work and hours they put in, it’s a

lot less than it used to be because of college students’ busy schedules.

“A lot of them have summer school, internships, travel abroad, so we only get them for a limited time in the summer, but we have to really work hard (during this time),” Ramey said.

Ramey said they practice for a total of four days before the festival in October.

The court was excited to be practicing earlier this year in July. Hadley Hills Brewer, Duchess of the Rose Growers, said it’s fun to practice alongside the other members of the court and “watch it all come together.”

Ramey said she loves being a part of the festival more every year. She said she enjoys promoting and being part of the Tyler community, meeting new people and doing what she feels like God has blessed her with.

Ramey is not from Tyler but said the festival is special because of the history and her family’s involvement. Ramey said her husband’s grandfather helped found the Rose Festival and her former dance teacher was the former director and choreographer for the festival.

“Getting to step into his shoes and do what he did when I admired him so much is really extra special as well,” Ramey said.

Winn Morton

Iconic costume designer dies after extraordinary career

Legendary Texas Rose Festival costume designer Winn Morton passed away at age 93 on April 22, 2022.

In his nearly four decades serving in the role, Morton became renowned for his elaborate, intricate designs inspired by his incredible imagination and creative talents. Every year, the costumes just got better and better.

“Each season he outdid the previous year with his artistry for the Queen, Duchess, and Ladies-in Waiting, along with countless debutantes who will never forget working with Winn,” his obituary reads.

“Winn Morton will always be a bright sparkle in all of our hearts at the Texas Rose Festival,” the Texas Rose Festival Association said on Facebook after his death.

Morton retired as the costume designer in 2019, a role he had held since 1982, after designing his very last costumes and sets for the festival.

Known as the “King of Rhinestones and Feathers,” Morton refused to be anything even close to ordinary. His obituary said he would decline requests to design regular clothes.

“That would bore me to tears!” he once said.

Born in Lancaster on Dec. 12, 1928, Winn was gifted with a talent for art at a young age and honed the skill for years to come. He attended Highland Park schools, Southern Methodist University, Ringling School of Art and Parsons School of Design. He joined the United Scenic Artists Union in 1949.

In his early career, he designed for ‘The Arthur Godfrey Show’ at CBS, the Roxy Theater, and the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair for Olympic ice skater Dick Button, according to his biography in his

obituary.

For 17 years, he designed hundreds of costumes for the Jones Beach Marine Theater.

Morton had the opportunity to work with all the top costume workrooms in New York and also designed for Broadway and offBroadway productions. He “lived for show business,” the biography states.

In 1975, Morton became art director for Six Flags Show Productions. Later, Morton designed costumes for the Hanneford Circus and Circus Vargas, including for performers, ringmasters, and elephants – fulfilling his love of the circus. His biography states that he accomplished one of his lifelong dreams when he designed “The Living Unicorn” for the Ringling Brothers Circus in the 115th Edition of the Greatest Show on Earth.

In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Morton designed attire for charity balls and “lavish parties for prominent Dallas socialites,” his obituary reads. And because he could truly do it all, Morton also designed many wedding gowns. His talent was known wide and far and his clients always knew he would return with an outstanding design.

“His clientele was discerning, and they knew Winn’s imagination would exceed their expectations,” his obituary reads.

Working as a designer for more than seven decades, his death left a “void in the world of culture, style, and beauty,” his obituary reads.

Morton was predeceased by his partner of 53 years, Harry Lewis, who died in 2006, and his parents and a brother. He is survived by nieces, great-nieces and nephews, and many devoted friends and work associates including his “loyal assistant and true friend,” Manuel ‘Chuy’ Montelongo-Valdez.

When it came to Morton’s designs, he never did anything halfway, and his extraordinary career and notable achievements suggest he took the same approach to his long life, living it to the fullest.
