ENTITIES WORK TO IMPROVE HEALTH OUTCOMES IN EAST TEXAS

East Texas is home to quality healthcare facilities and thriving medical systems. Expansion can be seen across the region, creating better care for residents of both rural and urban areas of East Texas.

In the 2025 edition of ETX View’s Medical Directory, our writers highlight several positive aspects of our region’s medical landscape.

Starting on Page 8, read about Christus Health’s commitment to expanding into more rural areas of East Texas to ensure everyone – no matter their zip code – receives high-quality care. From new facilities to efforts to recruit more staff, Christus leadership continues to do everything it can to fill healthcare gaps.

In Tyler, Dr. Julie V. Philley was recently named the sixth president of UT Tyler. Philley, a physician board certified in pulmonary and critical care medicine, is the first woman to hold this position at the institution. Read more on Page 16 about the Overton native, who was a key member of the team who helped launch UT Tyler’s School of Medicine. The med school will welcome its third class of students this summer to the UT Health Science Center campus. Construction continues at the state-of-the-art medical

education building on Fifth Street, and it is expected to open later this year.

In this issue, we also share news about some cutting-edge AI-powered technology that UT Health Tyler is using; read more on Page 23. Speaking of top-level care, read about a clinic helping their clients feel their best on Page 34. Also inside, we highlight some exceptional facilities continuing to strive for excellent care, including Diagnostic Clinic of Longview on Page 26 which is celebrating 50 years this year, and Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint, on Page 38, which has been dedicated to serving East Texans since 2002.

There simply isn’t enough room to applaud every facility and individual making a difference in health outcomes for East Texans, but we think these stories show just how bright the future is for the state of health care in our region. We commend our local healthcare entities on their determination to better serve East Texas.

Christus Health keeps access at forefront of mission to serve

As Christus Health Northeast Texas Health System grows and expands, it hopes to meet the needs of rural areas.

Although Christus Health started in Texas over 100 years ago, it did not expand into the Christus Health Northeast Texas Health System until 2016. That same year, the Tyler ministry joined Christus Health. In addition, hospitals in Sulphur Springs, Longview and Marshall joined the system. Since then, the health system has expanded rapidly in areas that previously lacked access.

“Access to care is very important,” Christus Health Northeast Texas CEO Chris Glenney said. “So if we can't get a patient in, then our mission does not start.”

In the Northeast Texas system, they have about 450,000 emergency room visits in a year. The Northeast Texas system has three critical access hospitals — which are smaller hospitals with less than 25 beds in places like Jacksonville, Atlanta and Winnsboro — along with six large community hospitals and two micro hospitals in North Longview and South Tyler.

In addition, Christus has a heart hospital in Tyler, multiple rehab hospitals and long-term acute care hospitals. They have over 100 clinics and health parks in Northeast Texas and five freestanding emergency rooms in Athens, Canton, Lindale, Kilgore and West Texarkana. Christus has 40 ambulances and four helicopters to serve patients throughout the region.

PLANTING ACCESS POINTS ACROSS NORTHEAST TEXAS

Christus is starting 2025 with many projects in the works. Through data and research, the team found areas in need of more healthcare and planned new facilities around those findings.

“We're not just going to willy-nilly build a building,” said Coleman Swierc, Public Relations Specialist at Christus Health. “It's a building that is going to serve because there is a need. They're very data-driven, fact-based decisions, and thus you get access points where maybe they weren't before.”

As part of their mission to keep East Texans in the region, | CONT. ON PG. 11

Christus will add three facilities including a micro hospital in Palestine, a healthpark in Mount Pleasant and a freestanding emergency room in Henderson.

“The point of those freestanding emergency rooms is to create access points for patients,” Glenney said. “We want patients to stay in East Texas for care. We don't want patients to have to go to Dallas for care or Houston for care. And so there's a lot of challenges with access to care.”

Christus Health Northeast Texas Health System officials hope to open all three facilities this year. They decided to expand in these areas to help fill healthcare gaps. For areas like Palestine — where there is one regional hospital — the need for more providers is evident.

In addition, Christus is launching a Christus Health Cancer Center in Longview. With the new facility in Longview, they will add 50 to 75 providers a year.

Christus leaders hope to continue meeting the needs of sick East Texans through targeting centers in areas where health disparities are high.

“Whether it's cardiac disease, stroke, or cancer — those are big significant challenges in Northeast Texas,” Glenney said. “If you look at Northeast Texas and the health of our population, we stand out in those three areas, particularly.”

To help combat these disparities, Christus has cardiovascular centers in Tyler and is launching one in Sulphur Springs.

“Very, very excited about bringing that high quality level of care to that ministry,” Glenney said. “We're excited about that. But … every single location that we're in today, we're expanding cardiovascular services. That's a big part of what we do.”

TRAINING FUTURE PHYSICIANS

Last June, UT Tyler and Christus Health announced an affiliate agreement to allow UT Tyler medical students to train at Christus facilities. Through training students

| CONT. FROM PG. 11

in Northeast Texas, officials hope they will stay in the region.

At Christus Good Shepherd in Longview, internal medicine residents are being trained. This program has allowed to train residents and hire them later on. Christus also has a partnership to train students from the Texas A&M University Rural Medicine program in Sulphur Springs.

“And that allows medical students who are young in their career to come to Sulphur Springs, spend several weeks in Sulphur Springs, experiencing the community, experiencing our Christus Health system, with the idea that hopefully they'll want to practice in rural Texas,” Glenney said.

EXPANDING IN LONGVIEW

In recent years, Christus Health has expanded in Longview through adding orthopedics. Due to cancer disparities in Gregg County and Northeast Texas, officials realized it was a necessary investment.

Gregg County is in the 90th percentile and above in cancer incident rates. Cancer death rates are 10% in

death per capita. Lung cancer and breast cancer are some of the areas with higher rates in the region.

“We smoke … we eat a lot … we don't exercise enough in East Texas,” Glenney said. “We're exposed to different things in East Texas. All that leads to higher incidences of cancer and heart disease, so we really want to aim to curtail that. That's what our cancer center's about there. In doing so, it just allows the patients to be a part of our ministry.”

Christus hopes to open the cancer center in fall 2026. To start off, the center will recruit three medical oncologists and one radiation oncologist. Afterwards, Christus’ goal is to have a total of 40 staff, which includes technicians.

QUALITY

Christus Health prides itself on its quality of physicians. The health system has physicians from all over the United States and world, including Russia.

“They care about our communities. Their focus is on quality. They want their patients to get the most, the highest level of care they possibly can,” Glenney said.

Christus has received numerous awards for its

care including an A rating from Leapfrog for all their Northeast Texas hospitals.

TRAINING EMPLOYEES

Before Christus Trinity Clinic existed, the Trinity Clinic was a group of three physicians groups who came together in Tyler. They began looking for a hospital partner and found Mother Frances. They joined together and became a part of the Christus Trinity Mother Frances Health System.

Now, there are over 1,200 physicians in the Christus Trinity Clinic group. The group allows employees to exchange information, collaborate and grow.

“There's a lot of opportunities to collaborate, especially on different advancements within healthcare,” Glenney said. “... They're tied to the culture of the system, which is really great. We have a lot of physician leaders here that are trying to make the system as high quality as possible.”

CHALLENGES

As Christus Health works on launching new facilities, they will need physicians. In areas like Tyler and

Longview, recruiting is not difficult. However, for the smaller towns, it is harder to entice physicians to want to move there.

“It takes a specific type of person that wants to live in a smaller community,” Glenney said. “Sometimes these physicians, they don't have the resources that you see in the larger city, so they have to work a little bit more independently.”

Despite the difficulty, Christus has been able to recruit many physicians to smaller towns. This is due to the Epic software system and facilities they offer. A provider has more resources because they are part of a larger system.

“If you give them the resources they need to be successful, and they get things like Epic … they have staff and we take care of them from a staffing perspective, so they have the people to help them. And then you focus on mission and quality, that's a really good place to be,” Glenney said.

Christus will continue its journey of expansion this year and into the future, with a goal to expand access while serving East Texans.

‘An Incredible Honor’

Dr. Philley, who played key role in launching med school, is first woman president of UT Tyler

The University of Texas System recently named Dr. Julie V. Philley as the sixth president of The University of Texas at Tyler.

“She was the most qualified candidate out there for the job,” said UT System Board of Regents Chairman Kevin P. Eltife. “Dr. Philley has done so much for this institution over the past 12 years … she was instrumental in helping get the medical school started. We’re so proud of her.”

As the sixth president, she is also the first woman to hold this position at the institution.

“I’m honored to represent all of our faculty, but for women in academia, this is an incredible honor for me,” Philley said. “This is the first in East Texas, at UT Tyler, and I take that very seriously … I’m not going to let anyone down.”

Philley, a physician board certified in pulmonary and critical care medicine, played a key role in launching the UT Tyler School of Medicine — the UT System’s seventh medical school — which welcomed its first cohort to campus last fall. Since the merger of UT Tyler and the UT Health Science Center at Tyler in 2021, she has served as UTT’s executive vice president for health affairs and took on the additional role of vice provost in 2022.

Before being named president of UT Tyler, she was chair of the Department of Medicine and a professor of medicine at the UT Health Science Center at Tyler.

“We’ve been working with Dr. Philley for so long, and we knew immediately when there was going to be an opening in the presidency that we wanted Julie Philley,” Eltife said. “The board voted unanimously for her, and you see why — she brings excitement. She’s a breath of fresh air, and we’re excited to work with her to take this institution to the next level.”

A native of Overton — just 20 miles from Tyler — Philley returned to East Texas in 2012 as an assistant professor of medicine at UT Health Tyler, where she focused on research in nontuberculous mycobacterial disease and bronchiectasis. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Texas Woman’s University and studied medicine at UT Health Houston’s McGovern Medical School. Philley completed her internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital and a fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

| CONT. ON PG. 18

| CONT. FROM PG. 16

Philley laid out her expectations for UTT and its future success.

“Across our campuses, there is an accelerated spirit of opportunity, growth, teamwork, and the sincere passion of what we do,” Philley said. “We’ve heard the reports and we’ve all seen the news. Education is in a tough state, wrought with difficult decisions and the everchanging dynamics of our population … amid the value proposition of a four-year degree. There are challenges, so it is now more important than ever that we understand who we are and what we do.”

The medical school welcomed its second class this summer, and the nursing school ranks among the top five largest in the state, offering a comprehensive array of programs. Excitement surrounds the planned investments for the College of Education and Psychology.

“At a pivotal time in education, we want to double down to produce quality teachers and address the mental health crisis,” Philley said.

The Fisch College of Pharmacy is changing the game by encouraging students as young as middle school to consider the impactful role of pharmacists in healthcare. The School of Health Professions is also providing the workforce needed across multiple sectors.

“All of this is found by our base, our firm foundation, our College of Arts and Sciences, making sure the foundation is strong and teaching the liberal arts skills that have helped so many of us through life,” Philley said.

The university has campuses in Longview, Palestine, and Houston, operates K-12 charter schools, and has partnerships with health systems, all contributing to the education and care of the community.

| CONT. FROM PG. 18

“Every student that enters our doors deserves a highquality education for a fair price in a timely fashion,” Philley said. “We want them to leave our campus empowered to do good in the world and to be proud of their university.”

With the continued success at UT Tyler, this growth has set the stage for further enhancements to its academic programs and the attraction of even more students, contributing to a record enrollment of more than 10,000 this year.

“There’s nowhere to go but up,” Eltife said. “It’s just phenomenal what this institution can do.”

Philley said the future is bright.

“It’s a wonderful time to be in Tyler, and it’s a wonderful time to see what we can build together,”

Philley said. “(Students’) success is the entire reason we exist. We’re here to serve, to educate the workforce of East Texas, and we’re here so that people can have a better life. It’s about providing opportunity for each other, and ultimately, it’s about success for our students, our faculty, and those we serve.”

Philley’s appointment comes after the retirement of longtime president Dr. Kirk Calhoun. After serving a combined 22 years as president of UT Tyler and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (UTHSCT), Calhoun announced his retirement in February 2024.

CUTTING EDGE

UT Health Tyler first in region to offer HYDROS Robotic System, an AI-powered platform for Aquablation therapy to treat BPH

UT Health Tyler is the first in the region to offer Aquablation therapy with the new HYDROS Robotic System, the next-generation platform to treat men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate.

Aquablation therapy, now delivered by an AI-powered robotic system, is clinically proven to provide significant, durable BPH symptom relief while preserving sexual function and continence across prostates of all shapes and sizes.

BPH affects millions of men and impacts urinary function, making it difficult to urinate and fully empty the bladder. Common indicators a man may be experiencing BPH are the need to urinate immediately or urgently, urinating more often than normal and urinating frequently at night. Without timely treatment, BPH can lead to severe health issues such as permanent bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and incontinence. One in two men ages 51-60 have BPH and 99 percent of men say BPH impacts their quality of life. The standard treatment option

CONT. FROM PG. 23

today is surgery. However, surgery has been shown to impact sexual function and continence.

Aquablation therapy was designed to offer a minimally invasive and effective solution for BPH, minimizing the need for men to choose between safety and efficacy. Aquablation therapy is unique in its use of real-time, ultrasoundguided, robotic-assisted waterjet technology, allowing surgeons to create a personalized treatment plan that precisely targets which prostate tissue to remove and which to preserve. With this tailored approach, the system accurately removes problematic tissue while safeguarding critical anatomy.

“BPH is a widespread condition

that severely compromises quality of life for countless men over age 50,” said Dr. William Armstrong, a urologist with UT Health East Texas.

“With Aquablation therapy, men can reclaim their lifestyles and find relief from symptoms while preserving sexual function and continence — outcomes that have proven elusive with many traditional treatment modalities.”

The HYDROS Robotic System represents the next evolution in the delivery of Aquablation therapy. Leveraging insights from over 50,000 procedures, HYDROS features FirstAssist AI treatment planning, advanced image guidance, robotic resection and a streamlined workflow.

HYDROS is designed to improve

efficiency, enhance surgeon and staff experience, and deliver a more accurate and consistent treatment plan for better clinical outcomes.

The clinically proven procedure integrates next-generation ultrasound imaging and digital cystoscopy to provide the surgeon with a multi-dimensional, detailed view of the entire prostate, enabling personalized treatment planning tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy. Utilizing a heatfree waterjet, the robot executes the surgeon-defined treatment plan to remove obstructive tissue while protecting critical anatomy. This enables efficient and predictable waterjet resection, standardizing the operative experience across a wide range of prostate sizes and shapes.

HALF A CENTURY OF CARE

Diagnostic Clinic of Longview celebrates 50 years of service

For the Diagnostic Clinic of Longview, 2025 is a big year. The clinic is celebrating 50 years since opening as the first multi-specialty clinic serving Longview. The team members pride themselves in being the only independent multi-specialty clinic in Longview.

“This place was founded by doctors, built by doctors. It's owned by doctors and our providers,” CEO Bert Ratay said. “Their main focus is to — I know it sounds cliche —but they just really want to take care of the community. If you're a well person, they want you to come in and let's keep making sure you're well … If you're not a well person, we want to see you as often as we can to make sure you don't get worse.”

While doing a residency at University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston, future founder of the Diagnostic Clinic of Longview first learned about Longview. Afterwards, Dr. John Greifenkamp came to Longview and founded the clinic. A year later, Dr. Roger Kiser returned from serving in the United States Navy and joined the practice.

Greifenkamp founded the Diagnostic Clinic of Longview in 1975 to fill the gap for primary care providers.

“We wanted to make a place where patients could get everything they needed in one place, or, to the best of our ability, give them everything that we could possibly do right here in the clinic,”

GROWTH

By 1997, they had primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, OB-GYN, and added orthopedic surgeons. In a week, they have 100,000 active charts — which means the patient has come through recently.

They currently have locations in Gilmer, Longview and Marshall where they continue to offer primary care. At their two Gilmer locations, Dr. David Buller, Dr. Lewis King and Dr. Steven Murry serve

the area offering family medicine and internal medicine. Their clinics in Longview provide many specialities including pulmonology, orthopedics, surgery and more.

Through their various locations, they ensure communication between their over 100 providers, so there is a continuum of care and patients are properly cared for. Charts are updated by providers at every specialty to ensure the primary care doctor sees everything.

A PASSION FOR SERVICE

As healthcare facilities shut down during the pandemic, Diagnostic Clinic of Longview continued to serve patients. Nurses swabbed patients every day to check for COVID-19. The clinic turned an oil change place into a drive-thru COVID- 19 testing and vaccination location. In the parking garage, staff saw sick pediatric patients. In addition, the clinic helped supply materials

to the local hospital during the pandemic.

“We stayed open. We saw our patients every day,” Rotay said.

DCOL doctors make house calls to check in on patients and others have picked up patients who lack transportation. They are passionate about helping patients however they can.

“Whenever there's something that has to be done or something has to be taken care of, folks here at the clinic all kind of feel like it's their responsibility to lead that way,” Rotay said

At the Diagnostic Clinic of Longview, they accept patients whether they have insurance or not.

“We don't turn folks away because of their type of insurance, but we take care of the whole community,” Ratay said.

In addition, the clinic has a partnership with Longview Regional Medical Center which allows them to more easily share patients’ data for when they are transferred

to the hospital.

Many of the providers at Diagnostic Clinic of Longview participate on mission trips to Central America, South America and Africa and help out at local free clinics for communities in need.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

As the Diagnostic Clinic of Longview celebrates 50 years, they aim to continue serving East Texans. Ratay has a wishlist based on the gaps he has noticed in East Texas, which includes neurology and expanding primary care.

In addition, pulmonology services are one of the areas they need but not as much as neurology. There are few neurologists available, making the need for the specialty more evident.

“(Primary care providers are) the first line of defense. They're the folks that are out in the community, going to church, going to stores,” Ratay said. “They're grassroots people, and we have to keep a steady amount of those

people coming, whether it's pediatrics, internal medicine or family practice, or OB GYN.”

WHAT CELEBRATING 50 YEARS MEANS

On Feb. 12, Diagnostic Clinic of Longview will celebrate 50 years of service. Hitting this milestone means a lot to the clinic and the community.

“It's just outstanding. It's really special to us,” Ratay said.

Ahead of the 50th anniversary, they reprinted a third run of their shirts due to high demand. Ratay was surprised at the reception from staff, both current and former, who wanted to celebrate the anniversary.

“It means we've been good enough for long enough that we stick around,” Ratay said. “It's really most folks that work here, if not everybody, is just proud. It's a nice thing that resonated in wearing the teal and gray. It's a pride thing.”

The facility is located at 707 Hollybrook Drive in Longview. Visit www.dcol.net for more information.

Taking our Time… To Care…

Home-Aid Caregivers, LTD locally owned and operated by Courtney Klepfer and Rory Bagwell who are two long term care powerhouse females in the industry in East Texas with offices located in Tyler and Longview, Texas.

When we sat down to decide what we wanted our business to look like it was simple, take care of our caregivers, take care of our families and just that to CARE!

Our slogan quickly became “THRIVE WITH US” because thinking of our aging population and the needs that we meet every day we want families and our caregivers to THRIVE. We are a support system and for many families on a difficult journey and we want to be a strong resource that cares. Just like that we want to be a strong resource for our caregivers to Thrive with education and resources.

Courtney and Rory’s passion grew in their careers by helping families navigate a dementia or Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Knowing that caregiving for that disease alone is not cookie cutter for any family our goal is to have every caregiver within their first year of employment Dementia Care Certified through our local college continuing

education course held at Tyler Junior College. It really is the truest of individualist approaches to caring for our aging population.

ALSO important to us to match every caregiver personally.

Transforming Health and Confidence:

A New Regenerative Medicine and Aesthetic Wellness Center in Longview

Launched in January 2025, Renu Self Medical is the vision of Jill Murdock, a board-certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC), who is dedicated to helping clients achieve their aesthetic and wellness goals. With a strong background in cardiology, Jill spent 3 years as a Cardiovascular NP and 12 years as a Registered Nurse in Cardiovascular ICU and ER. Combining her extensive clinical expertise with a passion for holistic care, Jill founded Renu Self Medical to provide personalized, cutting-edge solutions that empower individuals to look and feel their best.

Jill’s approach to care is rooted in compassion, innovation, and a commitment to excellence. She saw the need for a more personalized, patient-centered approach to wellness, which led to the creation of Renu Self Medical. Inspired by her own experiences and driven by a desire to offer transformative solutions, Jill’s mission is to give clients the opportunity to reconnect with their natural vitality and feel confident in their skin.

The center specializes in regenerative medicine, harnessing the body’s natural ability to heal itself,

promoting muscle regeneration, neurological support, and faster recovery times. By combining these treatments with aesthetic therapies, Jill is able to offer a holistic approach that restores balance, health, and confidence. Renew self medical is using biocompatible materials “meaning they’re designed to integrate well with the bodies tissue” to add volume to areas of the face or body, providing a more useful appearance. Examples: PRP and PRF., peptide therapy, skincare, weight loss therapies, and more—all designed to help clients rejuvenate naturally, without relying on pharmaceuticals.

Jill’s dedication to holistic care extends to supporting the East Texas community, as she understands the positive impact that small, local businesses have on the area. Her personal journey into regenerative medicine and aesthetic wellness is about helping others achieve lasting results and feel their best inside and out. Looking ahead, Jill is excited to continue empowering individuals to experience transformative health and wellness at Renu Self Medical.

TOP LEVEL WELLNESS

Accessibility, affordability and quality are top priorities for health and wellness company

Feeling your best is priceless, and Wade Collins and his team are working to help their clients achieve that goal.

Collins is president of Top Level Wellness, a company that started in Texas and has since expanded into Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri. After 30 years in the health and wellness industry, Collins started Top Level Wellness in 2022 to help people better themselves.

“I noticed that there was becoming an epidemic of increased obesity and diabetes, even though we know more as a society, these days, about fitness and nutrition than we ever have,” said Collins, who previously owned a chain of fitness centers and a nutritional supplement company. Collins has also been a provider of Electromyography (EMG) services at Tyler Internal Medicine Associates for 20 years. “I wanted to find pathways to help people lose weight or generally reach their goals of feeling great. We also wanted to utilize the technology of telemedicine to make our wellness services conveniently available to anyone, no matter where they live.”

Top Level Wellness offers weight loss services with an affordable semaglutide plan. Semaglutide is a medication used for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and is also used for weight management.

Collins said his team helps clients by providing a consultation, guidance, the semaglutide product and all supplies “in an affordable package.” Conveniently, all products are delivered right to a client’s door, and Collins’ team remains available to answer any questions.

“Our biggest goal is to help individuals feel the best they possibly can, especially affordably and conveniently,” Collins said. “We have a great team of providers who truly care and want individuals to reach their goals. They are very accessible and provide guidance to help people

start their wellness journey and reach whatever goals they aspire to with their overall wellness.”

“Losing weight will always help an individual’s overall health and wellness,” Collins said. “They feel better, have more energy, more stamina and it allows them to be more active.”

Collins noted it can be hard to be engaged with life if you are always tired or do not feel your best.

“Improving your wellness leads to a more fulfilling life. Living a healthy lifestyle and keeping a healthy weight also keeps an individual from developing other conditions that affect their quality of life,” Collins said.

Collins said clients are pleased with their results.

“We have great feedback from clients about our product efficacy and the affordable cost we provide compared to other companies in the field. We have not had a client that did not lose weight on the program. We have a great compounding pharmacy we work with in Texas and we price products as low as is viable,” Collins explained.

The combination of “accessibility, quality and affordability” makes Top Level Wellness stand out, Collins said.

“We are accessible anywhere there is an internet connection, we provide the highest quality products and we make it affordable for virtually anyone,” he said.

Collins advises people looking to lose weight to make a plan that is sustainable. “Create a healthy lifestyle that you know you can maintain for the rest of your life. Healthy habits can be formed just like unhealthy habits,” he said.

Top Level Wellness also offers testosterone replacement therapy.

Tyler Junior College offers numerous programs designed to prepare students for rewarding careers in healthcare — or to build on their existing skills to gain professional advancement.

TJC graduates earn their national certifications and then go directly to work in various health-related industries, mostly within the East Texas workforce. Employers report that TJC graduates are well prepared, and the College’s accredited programs routinely report high national board pass rates and student satisfaction.

In addition to improving the lives of its students, TJC also significantly impacts the local and regional economy, including:

• approximately $560 million total income in the region

• 8,769 total regional jobs supported

• one out of every 27 jobs in the TJC service area is supported by the activities of TJC and its students

Along with its many associate degree programs, from nursing to radiologic technology, TJC offers baccalaureate programs where students can continue their studies and earn four-year degrees in workforce areas such as dental hygiene and healthcare administration.

“In 2021, I decided to pursue my bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene,” said Bridgett Tosh of Rusk, a longtime dental hygienist. “TJC offers this degree completely online, which allowed me to work while pursuing it.

TJC PROVIDES PATHWAYS FOR STUDENTS TO ENTER SUCCESSFUL HEALTHCARE CAREERS

Because I had already received my previous degree at TJC, the process was extremely easy.”

Tosh completed her bachelor’s degree in 2023, retired from private practice in 2024 and is now a professor in the TJC dental hygiene department.

“TJC is truly a student-centered college,” she added. “The staff is dedicated to helping students succeed in their college degrees but also in their careers afterward.”

Most TJC healthcare programs are housed in the Robert M. Rogers Nursing & Health Sciences Center, a 150,000-square-foot facility designed in the style of a modern hospital. The center features high-tech simulation labs where students can progress from classroom theory to the practical application of the knowledge and skills they will need in the actual job setting.

With professors who are certified healthcare industry veterans with extensive education and experience in their fields, TJC students receive a high-quality education from some of the most respected educators in their chosen professions.

Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital continues legacy of high-caliber care

Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital has been dedicated to serving East Texas for more than 20 years. Formed in 2002, Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital was assembled by physicians who wanted more control of patient care.

The facility is a physician-owned hospital, meaning not only do most of the medical staff have financial stake but they have more control over how they care for their patients.

A former Mongtomery Ward store, the main hospital included five operating rooms and six interventional procedure suites, while the outpatient surgery center added another four operating rooms.

At its opening, the hospital had 43 employees, with medical staff specializing in orthopedic and spine surgery, non-surgical pain management procedures, diagnostic imaging and musculoskeletal health and rehabilitation.

With an outpatient surgery center, two imaging centers, three outpatient physical therapy clinics, four urgent care clinics, and a walk-in orthopedic clinic, the hospital was ready to serve the Tyler

community.

After being in the works for nearly two years, in 2013 the hospital completed renovation and expansion. Such expansion included larger operating rooms, pain intervention suites, private patient admitting suites and a new cafeteria.

With a medical staff of over 200 and more than 400 employees, the hospital performs over 7,000 surgeries annually, as well as more than 15,000 pain management interventions and greater than 25,000 diagnostic imaging procedures.

From treatment to recovery, the hospital uses stateof-the-art technology, as well as the latest techniques to help patients get back on their feet.

The additional space on the second floor is utilized as a health and wellness center featuring outpatient physical therapy, osteoporosis care, human performance and nutrition.

This musculoskeletal health and wellness facility houses the headquarters of a vigorous sports medicine outreach program which, in cooperation with leading orthopedic surgeons, cares for thousands of athletes from over 25 public and private schools and colleges.

Nationally ranked for patient satisfaction in the top 10% by Press Ganey, the award-winning team of surgeons, physicians and staff are dedicated to treating patients, not just the diagnosis.

Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital has earned several other accolades over the years and continues on its mission for excellence.

VITAL LIFE PHYSICAL THERAPY: Empowering Health and Healing in East Texas

Founded in 2016 by Sarah (Rudolph) Lowe, Vital Life Physical Therapy began as a side project to offer more personalized and effective care for people suffering from pain and physical limitations. Frustrated by the generic approach of traditional physical therapy settings, Sarah sought to create a space where manual therapy and a holistic, one-on-one approach would target the root causes of pain, rather than simply masking symptoms.

With over 16 years as a physical therapist, and 8 years of experience in the pelvic field, Vital Life Physical Therapy offers specialized services including myofascial release therapy, prenatal and postnatal care, and pelvic health rehabilitation. The practice focuses on conditions such as neck, back, and hip pain, as well as issues related to pelvic health, like urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse, and painful scars from birth. Clients also benefit from small group yoga and therapeutic movement classes, shockwave therapy, and HWAVE

therapy devices for pain relief and tissue rehab.

What sets Vital Life Physical Therapy apart is its emphasis on personalized care and a mind-body connection, addressing not just the physical pain but the emotional and mental components of healing. The goal is to empower clients to lead active, pain-free lives and to educate them on how to maintain their health as they age.

As a small, local business, Vital Life Physical Therapy thrives on building trust with clients, with many referrals coming from local midwives and doulas. Looking ahead, Sarah hopes to expand the team and provide more services to meet the growing need in East Texas for specialized care in pelvic health and pain management.

At Vital Life Physical Therapy, clients find more than just treatment—they find a partner in their journey to better health and wellness. As Sarah says, "Helping you live life abundantly!" is not just a slogan—it's the heart of my business.
