7TH BEST PREPS TYLER CELEBRATES OUTSTANDING STUDENT-ATHLETES
STORY BY PHIL HICKS
East Texas has some of the best and brightest in the Lone Star State.
Student-athletes put in countless hours of practices and workouts to help them excel in athletic competition.
They put in just as many hours in the classroom, library and home studying in number of subjects from history to english to math.
Also, they are impactful on their school and surrounding areas.
The communities they live in mean a lot to them, so they find time between practice, competition and studying to volunteer and serve their neighbors in hopes of making those communities stronger.
These young people should be recognized and applauded for their efforts, and the Tyler Morning Telegraph and TylerPaper.com introduced Best Preps to do just that.
Best Preps Tyler, celebrating its seventh year in 2025, honors student-athletes who have excelled at a high level in all areas.
Coaches from participating schools were asked to submit nominations based on the studentathlete’s contributions to varsity athletics as well as their work in the classroom and in the community. These athletes were required to have a GPA of 3.0 or better and to have verifiable community service or volunteer credentials of 10 or more hours in the current year.
Presenting sponsor for the event is Baylor, Scott & White Spine & Joint.
Other major sponsors included CHRISTUS Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute (Male and Female Athlete of the Year), East Texas Professional Credit Union (Red Carpet Sponsor) and Jucys Taco (Photo booth Sponsor).
Specialty Awards sponsors are Baylor, Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint (Heart and Desire ), Jucys Taco (Kona Ice) and East Texas Professional Credit Union (Community Excellence).
Sponsors for sports awards are Altra Federal Credit Union (Football), Baylor, Scott & White Spine & Joint (Boys and Girls Basketball), J&K Storage (Baseball), Jucys Taco (Boys and Girls Track & Field) and UT Health East Texas (Boys and Girls Golf).
Congratulations to our honored student-athletes, their parents and family, teachers and coaches. We are proud to recognize your hard work in all areas, and we thank you for providing a shining example to others in the community through your hard work, dedication and desire to help others.
And, finally, a special thanks to our Best Preps Tyler sponsors for continuing to support the young people of East Texas.

TKEYNOTE SPEAKER TYLER CAMPBELL SHARES INSPIRING MESSAGE AT BEST PREPS BANQUET
STORY BY PHIL HICKS CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS
yler Campbell, the son of one of East Texas’ most decorated athletes, was the keynote speaker at the 7th annual Best Preps Tyler Awards ceremony held April 29 at Green Acres Crosswalk Center in Tyler.
Campbell grew up the son of one of the greatest running backs ever, but Tyler — youngest son of Pro Football Hall of Famer and University of Texas Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell — has made a name for himself, overcoming obstacles to inspire others.
Tyler was named for the city his father called home.
Tyler Campbell is now the sales manager for Earl Campbell Meat Products and is a motivational speaker.
After playing at Austin Westlake High School, Tyler first attended Pasadena City College in California before suffering an injury. He battled back and earned a scholarship to San Diego State.
Tyler played fullback for SDSU and soon was dealt another unforeseen challenge. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis during his junior year.
"Those of you who don't know what multiple sclerosis is, it's an autoimmune disease where lesions and plaques form on your brain and they inhibit your brain from sending messages to the rest of your body," Campbell in a previous interview. "Most people (diagnosed with MS) are confined to wheelchairs. I played college football with that disease because my teammates were depending on me and I wasn't about to let them down.
"I was one of the first people to play Division I college football with multiple sclerosis. A Campbell never quits."
An entrepreneur in his own right, Tyler was awarded the honor of becoming an Ambassador for The National MS Society at the age of 24 in 2011. He has been traveling the country as a professional speaker ever since. Tyler excels at delivering messages centered around how to overcome adversities that present themselves in the business world.
“My perspective on MS is different from most, for
me it wasn’t a curse it was a gift. It gave me a platform to serve others. This disease reminds me that I am to give life everything that I have today. For I know that tomorrow I could lose the functioning of my limbs. It's that simple. I help people figure out what fuels them. Once you do that, a person's mindset quickly shifts to a state of being that adversity cannot penetrate.”
Tyler and his wife Shana reside in Austin with their three children.

WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Nathaniel Kirksey is the ultimate team player. As the strong side outside linebacker of the Tyler Legacy Red Raiders, Nathaniel led the district in tackles with 159. But not only is Nathaniel a statistical leader, when he speaks, the team listens. His positive outlook, even when the team seems to be in a near impossible situation, has dug us out of a hole multiple times this season. Nathaniel may not be the biggest, strongest or fastest player on the field, but he certainly plays like a giant with an unstoppable motor day in and day out. Aside from football, Nathaniel handles business in the classroom with a 3.95 GPA, and he also has shown up in the community in various ways. Nathaniel Kirksey’s leadership qualities, athletic ability and love of our community makes him a deserving recipient of any and every award that comes his way.

WHAT HER COACH SAID
Amy not only dominates the district in cross country and distance races in track and field, she demonstrates leadership, character and integrity like few people I have met. She challenges me to be a better person by her example. Amy may be the best runner in the district but she is also a cheerleader for her own team, finishing her race and then getting out on the field to support others. She serves others, always helps with clean up and tear down. She is the ultimate teammate. She became the first girl in school history to qualify for the UIL state meet.

WHAT HER COACH SAID
Senoj is a three-year starter for us. In one season, Senoj helped guide her team from last place in district to a district championship, a bi-district championship, as well as her team being ranked in the top 20 in the TABC poll the entire season finishing with a 30-5 record. This is only the third time in school history that the Lady Raiders won 30 games in a season. She also helped her team win two of the tournaments this season as well. Senoj was the unanimous pick for District 10-6A MVP, TGCA All-State, TGCA All-Star, TGCA[1]Legacy All-Star, TABC All-Region, multiple time Tyler Morning Telegraph Player of the Week, KETK Athlete of the Week, and she has also been a District Offensive MVP and Newcomer of the Year and will continue her playing career at New Mexico State University. Senoj is not only a great player but a tremendous leader. We really challenged her to step up as a vocal leader on the team, and she came through in a HUGE way. There were a few days where her leadership saved a practice and helped regain the focus of the team. Senoj loves and cares for each of her teammates and truly wants to win more than anything. As a coach, you can only pray that you get to coach a young lady like Senoj at least once in your career. She will leave as one of the greatest Lady Raiders ever.

AWARD FOR BOYS SWIMMING
Henry Mebane
BISHOP THOMAS K. GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Photo by Les Hassell/Tyler Morning Telegraph
WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Henry moved back to the Tyler area this summer. He had previously been in the catholic school system and although not the easiest transition, he fully integrated himself into his home at Bishop Gorman. Henry is very personable, is quick to make friends and try new things in an effort to have school spirit and meet new people. Being in a new school and recently losing his mother created a difficult road to navigate, but like his swimming, he worked to make the most of his everyday opportunities. With the loving care and support of his family, he has thrived. Unlike previous years swimming, Henry did not have a year round swim program. He joined the football team in the fall and wanted to focus on one sport at a time. He would however, often come to evening swim practices so he wouldn’t get too behind. He embraced challenging workouts and was always eager to do just a little more. Henry qualified to the state meet in the 100 freestyle this year, something he had never been able to do before. He also finally broke one minute and finished with a two second PR for his last race; his brother who was also his teammate and his father cheering him on all the way. Henry is a very positive person, often laughing or trying to make others laugh. He looks for the joys in life and embraces faith and family. We are incredibly proud of him and thankful to have him at our school.

As her coach, I have been able to depend upon her both in the pool and outside the pool to be a role model. Anna will help the Whitehouse swim program by being a volunteer coach for the junior high team. Anna is going to continue her swimming career into college by swimming at the Rome City Institute in Rome, Italy. Outside of swimming, Anna has earned her Vet Med certificate and participates in the Equine Judging competition in Ag. She has been able to commit to both swimming and Ag all while maintaining the A honor roll and a 4.0 GPA.

Conley Conaway
WHITEHOUSE HIGH SCHOOL
Photo by Les Hassell/Tyler Morning Telegraph
WHAT HER COACH SAID
I have had the privilege of working with Conley in two separate seasons of her life. I coached her in middle school and more recently in her sophomore, junior and now senior year. Full of character, wisdom beyond her years, a strong moral compass and natural leadership skills, Conley is coachable, eager, enthusiastic and driven. She serves as captain of a 40-plus member cheer team, where she leads with an even temperament, consistency, determination and fortitude. Conley is diligent, thoughtful and prepared and makes it a goal to help others be prepared. She is concerned about the well being of others. She is concerned and focused on her present and her future. This is evident in her scholastic achievements. Conley is a selfless leader, always helping others and directing others with a firm yet gentle spirit. She is one of the most positive leaders I have coached. She is also skilled at her specific duties as captain, like calling an effective game in support of our athletes. She strives for perfection and is always prepared. Conley is also very inclusive of others. As a junior, she held a leadership position as Head Spirit Ambassador and maintained appropriate and encouraging relationships with her teammates, athletes and community at large. She was one I could proudly have represent our squad, school and town.

AWARD FOR DRILL TEAM
Gracie Stokes
GRACE COMMUNITY SCHOOL
Photo by Santana Wood/Tyler Morning Telegraph
WHAT HER COACH SAID
I am nominating Gracie Stokes for Tyler Best Preps in drill team because of the phenomenal example that she is to her teammates and all who know her — both in dance and in life. I have known Gracie all four years of her high school career and I could not be more proud of the young lady she is. She is the head dance captain of the Cougarettes Drill Team at Grace after serving as first lieutenant last year. She is an extremely gifted dancer, but is always humble and gracious even when taking correction from me. She leads by example as the hardest working person on our team — always early to practice, always working behind the scenes and unifies the team as a true leader does. I can always count on her to take initiative and do what needs to be done before even having to ask - whether it's dance related or holding the team accountable. She is always encouraging her teammates and frequently meets with them outside of practice to help them as much as they need her to. Her performance qualities are unmatched, as you know if you've had the privilege to watch her dance, but her heart is pure as she radiates joy in all she does. Her teammates gravitate toward her leadership on and off the dance floor or field and it is for this reason that I could not think of anyone more deserving of this award than Gracie Stokes.

Alexa Remigio
BISHOP THOMAS K. GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL

WHAT HER COACH SAID
Alexa is one of the strongest and most dedicated athletes on my team. She is a role model to all of the other girls in a way that is so inspiring. Not only is she ranked at the top of her class academically, but she is a three-sport athlete, president of the student body and somehow still finds time to bake muffins for the team for breakfast.
Alexa is a wonderful human being and she is a fighter. Two years ago, she had decided that she would not be able to continue running. She was having a lot of issues with her knees and she was in constant pain; and it was halting her progression. So she took a step back, not sure if she would ever come back. However, after taking a year off, she realized how much it meant to her to be on the team and how much she missed it. The physical struggles she was having were not enough to keep her spirit down and she found the courage to try again.

On top of the academia and youth involvement, she has stepped up to be a phenomenal player on the field, scoring in every game she plays (currently a leader in scoring). CHAPEL HILL HIGH SCHOOL
Trevor Brooks is a standout in football, basketball, baseball and track for the Bulldogs.
In football, Brooks was a do-it-all player for the Bulldogs, playing both offense and defense. Brooks was named the Tyler Morning Telegraph All-Rose Country Football Defensive Player of the Year. Brooks was a key player for a Chapel Hill team that played in the state championship game in 2023.
“Trevor does it all for the Bulldogs. He may be the best Defensive football player in East Texas,” Chapel Hill athletic director and head football coach Jeff Riordan said. “He was an all-state punter as well. This year, due to injuries, Trevor has a big role with the ball in his hands, playing wide receiver and returner. ... Trevor may be the best all-around athlete that I've coached. He will be a four-year letterman in basketball and baseball, and he garnered many awards in both those sports as well. He is also a track athlete.”

Lane Gray
ARP HIGH SCHOOL
WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Lane is a fine young man who has faced much adversity in his young life. His father died of brain cancer before he was born so he was raised by his mother and his three older brothers. Then three years ago, he lost his mother to pancreatic cancer. Even with every excuse to not be successful and to be mad at the world, Lane excels in extracurricular activites all year round with many going on at the same time. Even while competing and being involved with every club he can get into and taking dual-credit classes, he has managed to be ranked No. 6 in his graduating class. Lane is a very unselfish person who is always willing to help anyone out in any way and is one that really makes you proud to say that he has come out of your program. During his time in high school, Gray has played football, basketball and baseball and is the president of the Arp bass fishing team.
