TKEYNOTE SPEAKER TYLER CAMPBELL SHARES INSPIRING MESSAGE AT BEST PREPS BANQUET
STORY BY PHIL HICKS CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS
yler Campbell, the son of one of East Texas’ most decorated athletes, was the keynote speaker at the 11th annual ETVarsity Best Preps Awards ceremony in Longview.
Campbell grew up the son of one of the greatest running backs ever, but Tyler - youngest son of Pro Football Hall of Famer and University of Texas Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell - has made a name for himself, overcoming obstacles to inspire others.
Tyler was named for the city his father called home.
Tyler Campbell is now the sales manager for Earl Campbell Meat Products and is a motivational speaker.
After playing at Austin Westlake High School, Tyler first attended Pasadena City College in California before suffering an injury. He battled back and earned a scholarship to San Diego State.
Tyler played fullback for SDSU and soon was dealt another unforeseen challenge. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis during his junior year.
"Those of you who don't know what multiple sclerosis is, it's an autoimmune disease where lesions and plaques form on your brain and they inhibit your brain from sending messages to the rest of your body," Campbell in a previous interview. "Most people (diagnosed with MS) are confined to wheelchairs. I played college football with that disease because my teammates were depending on me and I wasn't about to let them down.
"I was one of the first people to play Division I college football with multiple sclerosis. A Campbell never quits."
An entrepreneur in his own right, Tyler was awarded the honor of becoming an Ambassador for The National MS Society at the age of 24 in 2011. He has been traveling the country as a professional speaker ever since. Tyler excels at delivering messages centered around how to overcome adversities that present themselves in the business world.
“My perspective on MS is different from most, for me it wasn’t a curse it was a gift. It gave me a platform to
serve others. This disease reminds me that I am to give life everything that I have today. For I know that tomorrow I could lose the functioning of my limbs. It's that simple. I help people figure out what fuels them. Once you do that, a person's mindset quickly shifts to a state of being that adversity cannot penetrate.”
Tyler and his wife Shana reside in Austin with their three children.
ELEVENTH ANNUAL BEST PREPS LONGVIEW CELEBRATES STUDENT ATHLETES
STORY BY JACK STALLARD
They are the best of the best, on the field, in the community and in the classroom.
Every student-athlete in East Texas puts in a certain number of practice and workout hours each week honing their crafts for athletic competition.
To make sure they remain eligible in their chosen sport or activity, those athletes must also make sure work is completed – usually at a high level - in the classroom.
A good number of those kids don’t stop there.
The communities they live in mean a lot to them, so they find time between practice, competition and studying to volunteer and serve their neighbors in hopes of making those communities stronger.
These young people should be recognized and applauded for their efforts, and 11 years ago the Longview News-Journal introduced Best Preps to do just that.
ETVarsity Best Preps, celebrating its 11th year in 2025, honors student-athletes who have excelled at a high level in all areas.
Coaches from participating schools were asked to submit nominations based on the studentathlete’s contributions to varsity athletics as well as their work in the classroom and in the community.
These athletes were required to have a GPA of 3.0 or better and to have verifiable community service or volunteer credentials of 10 or more hours in the current year.

And, finally, a special thanks to our ETVarsity Best Preps sponsors for continuing to support the young people of East Texas.

Joe Ray
SABINE HIGH SCHOOL
WHAT HIS COACH SAID
I highly recommend Joe Ray as a candidate for anything or any opportunity that could be placed in front of him. I have been fortunate to coach this young man in the powerlifting program for four years. While a student athlete here at Sabine, he has personified many qualities that I have no doubt that he will one day be a successful individual and make a contribution to society. He has always been a leader on any team he has ever been on in my time here. There are times where he does not have to lead vocally, but just by doing the right thing. I would say he is one of the most reliable and dependable students on the Sabine High School campus.
Jayna Rucker
WHAT HER COACH SAID
Jayna is a multi-sport standout as well as an excellent student and community member. Jayna excels in powerlifting and is a tremendous leader in our program. She finished third in the state in the 198 pound class as a sophomore, and is approaching the 1,000-pound club in the 198 class this season as a junior. There are not enough words to express how great of a leader and team captain Kate is, as she is the best example of a servant leader I have ever seen. She practices servant leadership on and off the court and in any and all teams and organizations she is a part of. Kate genuinely puts the team before herself, makes sure what she does and how she acts and reacts does not compromise the team’s success and shows up for her teammates in whatever way they need in that moment. It has truly been a pleasure to have the opportunity to coach Kate, and there will be big shoes to fill once she graduates.

Drew Flores
LONGVIEW HIGH SCHOOL
WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Drew Flores has caught every game for the Lobos since he entered Longview High School as a freshman. I will never know all of Drew’s past coaches, and I probably won’t know all of Drew’s future coaches. But one thing I can guarantee is that Drew has or he will be that past coach’s or his future coach’s favorite player. The reason being is that Drew is the same guy every day. No matte rwhat is goin on around him or what is going on in his personal life, Drew is the same kid daily. He’s talented, solid and respectful. My father used to always tell me if a scout or recruiter arrives late to a game to watch me and there is no scoreboard present, he should never be able to tell the score of the game or how I am doing personally by my demeanor or body language. That statement holds more true for Drew than every kid I’ve ever coached or coached against.

WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Our boys cross country team has not been at the top in terms of team standings in years. He has made it his personal mission to buy in with his coach to help change that. He has gone to guys and has gotten them to come out for the team. I would have a new guy at practice almost every day for a few weeks, all because of Celson. He would have his mom up at 5 a.m. going to three different houses to pick guys up to get to practice at 5:50 a.m. He wold take it upon himself to get them extra training on the weekends because he knew there were behind coming out in the middle of the season. His love for his team and his dedication is unmatched. I can’t say enough about this young man’s effort to improve Gilmer’s boys cross country.

WHAT HER COACH SAID
This athlete’s discipline and integrity have always been apparent on in the classroom, on the court or on the field. She’s the player that always leads by example, and is sure to hold her teammates accountable while doing so. This player does things the right way, and goes 100% while doing so. She knows the standards. There is a reason this player can bat .600 and hit two home runs in one inning. The countless reps and unseen extra hours of putting in work after practices is a testament ot her dedication. A more specific testament would be how she, just days after a season-ending injury last year, was on a bucket hitting off a tee to prepare for this season. An athlete like this one is hard to come by, and would never let a small setback get in the way of her goals.
