Please note that as per previous meetings, the admissions policy and procedures have changed this year to create a lower enrolled number at EPC. Therefore although budget numbers have not been met, the current numbers have been approved by Mr David Gatley. Enrolment for 2019-2020 2020 is being finalised with the deadline for fee payment to be completed by 27th May, in order to secure the school place for existing parents. Offers have been sent out from the predictions of leavers for each year group, but the advice from Kerry Nockolds and the Admissions department is that BPS will begin on the expected budgeted number of 650 students. The base numbers for each class are calculated around 22 per class (Y1-6) (Y1 6) which is 88 per year group, with the capacity to manage age a maximum of 24 per class, so these potential 8 spaces are held as contingency should any priority candidates come through later in the year (as per the Admissions Policy). Final numbers can't be given at this stage as we do not know the final numbers of leavers, whilst the leavers survey sent out in April has about 1,000 responses this represents only 55-60% 55 60% of student population. Final confirmation on class numbers is only possible after all invoices are paid by May 27th.

Staffing The structure of the British Primary Section as at 17 May 2019 has remained constant since the previous meeting. Staffing for 2019-2020:

● Interviews for a Chinese Language and Culture teacher for Reception have been completed. After interviews with 8 shortlisted candidates, the successful candidate is Wen Chou. Wen is currently a Learning Assistant in Year 4 but has a BA Early Childhood Education from Melbourne, Australia, and has recently completed her Chinese Language teaching certification. The panel for the interviews consisted of David Gatley, Colette Armstrong, Jenny Chien and Yun-Yeh Tsai. Chelsea Lee was the HR representative assisting the process. ● Interviews for a full-time counsellor have been completed this week, as Chia Chi Chow is taking on the TES-wide Educational Psychologist role. Two rounds of interviews took place with Duncan Millward, Aidan Stallwood, Chia Chi Chow and Clare Doyle on the panel. Rubecca Hou has now been appointed as the new BPS Counsellor. Rubecca has had 5 years of counselling experience in both the US and Taiwan. ● The staffing structure for 2019-2020 is now complete with all positions filled. The British Primary School Action Plan. Curriculum and Assessment

● Planning and organisation for next year is full steam ahead with the senior leadership team welcoming Mike Norris to their meetings until the end of the term. Information sharing has occurred across the senior leaders that will be leaving this year, including weekly skypes with Luke Chaeter, and now with Gillian Richardson. Aidan Stallwood with the help of Craig Gamble and Mike Norris are ensuring that all information is in place for the start of the new academic year. ● Timetable changes for next year will be discussed at the meeting. Working with the French and German Sections as part of our Primary Senior Leadership Team a collaboration has occurred to remove the current 40 minute schedule into a more practical and educationally beneficial hourly timetable. ● Changes will be made to the Chinese Language and Culture programme for 2019-2020 to provide better structure and timing to the programme for both students and the teaching team. Changes to the Reception programme will also be shared at the May Council meeting. ● For 2019-2020, a new phonics programme will be introduced into Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Read, Write Inc. is a programme that most international schools in our region use and will provide a more consistent approach than the current Letters and Sounds programme. ● Year 5 and 6 have begun the PSHE unit, Sex and Relationships Education. This programme was explained to parents of these year groups in a letter and parent session last week. BPS follows the guidelines laid out in the revised SRE policy which was shared with Year 5 and 6 parents and has been published on the school website. Pupil Support

● As shared above the new school counsellor for 2019-2020 will be Rubecca Hou. ● This week the EAL team hosted Shane Leaning from The British School of Guangzhou for a two day training session. Shane is not only an assistant head at BSG, he is also the Teaching Fellow for Nord Anglia Education, specialising in English as an Additional Language and international link for NASSEA. For two days Shane led the team through a series of presentations and activities that allowed the

EAL team to reflect upon their current practice and gain a better understanding of new developments in the organisation and teaching of EAL. Quality and Accountability

● Assessment - PTE and PTM As part of our assessment processes all children from years 2-6 have now completed their end of year summative assessments, the Progress Test in English (PTE) and Progress Test in Mathematics (PTM). Early signs show that very positive results for each year group, outperforming English National averages. ● Teaching staff are going through a process of analysing the performance of their children which involves considering all of the performance evidence for the year- books, observations, formative and summative assessments and any other relevant information. The year groups are also moderating the data before data sheets are completed for each class and as a year group. Pupil progress meetings are then held by the Curriculum Lead with each member of the team to reflect and celebrate the achievements of the children as well as identifying any trends or gaps that can be tackled before the end of the academic year. Similar meeting are also held between the assessment coordinator and every Curriculum Leader to review the data sheet for the year group, which have a wider view as the data is analysed. The assessment coordinator then collates the whole school data and shares all the findings with the SLT team where discussions can be had on cohorts and areas of learning which may become a focus in future years. The summative data is presented to parents in a Summative results booklet like last year. ● End of year performance development meetings are currently being conducted. There is a line management system in place so that all members of staff have an annual performance development process. This is based on the relevant Learning Assistant, Teacher or Leadership Standards. Teachers then work collaboratively to set themselves individual and school-related goals to improve their practice. Currently this process is paper-based however next year an online management system, Blue Sky will be used. This will allow a much better experience for staff in terms of a portfolio for their professional and personal development, and a tool for tracking school wide information. This is being done in partnership with the British Secondary and High School

Resources and Facilities

● New umbrellas have been purchased to complement the new wooden benches by the cafeteria. These colourful additions have proved very popular with staff and children. ● Key Stage 1 will continue the BPS classroom environment plan to replace current furniture. An order from Furnware has been developed after consultation with the Year 1 and 2 teaching teams. Furnware is the company that have provided the Key Stage 2 furniture and has become a leading provider for international schools and is now a platinum sponsor for FOBISIA. Community and Governance

● Teacher council representatives have been requested for next year to replace Philip Doyle (leaving) and Mike Norris (promotion to SLT). Once nominations have been received by Wednesday 22 May, a voting process will be used if necessary. ● A big thank you to the PTA who produced a wonderful and collaborative Staff Appreciation surprise. Combined with the French and German sections’ PTAs all staff, teaching and central administration ● Dr Stephen Holmes will be meeting the Leadership for the third time on Wednesday 29th May to continue the strategic planning discussions. ● Steven Milner has been organising his 18th FOBISIA games. He will be taking Year 5 and 6 teams to Phuket, Thailand for the Primary Games. This is an excellent opportunity for a group of students that have been training throughout the year to compete in swimming, T-ball, football and athletics. This

year Mr Aidan Stallwood has helped to arrange a new sports kit to give a well needed update. These kits have arrived for both students and staff. The PTA AGM is on Thursday 6th June. This will be a summary of what has occurred in the PTA this year, all of the events that have been supported. This will also be the opportunity for a new chairperson to be appointed as Jenny Chien will be stepping down after a successful year. On Friday 24th May there will be a visit by an Eco-School Green Flag official. They will be looking through all of the work and projects that the school eco-committees have been implementing. The school could receive their accreditation as a Green Flag school.
