Introduction

This report will analysis a building located in centre Hamburg. It is going to look at the design concept in relation to the building location and integration with climate. In addition, it going to show some drawings, sketches and diagrams including site maps at different scales to show the context of the building.

Modern living in the centre of Hamburg? This dream becaome a reality on a tringular site that had been the parking lot of a publishing house - not an easy task, due to the heterogeneity of the area in question. The architect decided to halve the building massing, creating two identical, eight-story buildings. the hight mediates between the smail-scale historic fabroc to the north and the large-scale office building to the south.

The form, depth and orientation were developed to arrive at optimal lighting and views. There are four aprtments - eith flexible floor plan designs and ranging in surface area from 53 to 118m2 - on each level above the ground storey. The facade’s curtain wall elements- warm wood surfaces, dark glass panels and light- toned stone,alternating chess-board like the building with storey -high glazing - enclose the reinforced concrete construction. Like the building massing the dacades also serve as mediators: they mirror the frid of the neighbouring office complex, and their materiality set up a connection to the inciting atmosphere in the adjoining Gange district.

Hamburg has an oceanic climate (Cfb). Hamburg’s climate is influenced by its proximity to the coast and marine air masses that originate over the Atlantic Ocean. Nearby wetlands also enjoy a maritime temperate climate. Snowfall is rare, generally occurring once or twice a year.

The architect aim to create a green environment in mid of Hamburger where he forces on providing a good and healthy area that suitable for family to live in each apartment. The first object was to give a chance to everyone live in these apartments to have a nice view to outside area. Therefore in order to achieve this goal he designs to divide the project into two buildings. the floor layout is to have an apartment in each edge of building to provide a good ventilation, this will be explained in more detail as long as you go through this report. He also design a nice landscape to make the narrow train-

In addition, he design 53 apartment and 4 commercial shops which located on Ground floor only and served the business building where is located next door.

The warmest months in Hamburg are June, July, and August, with high temperatures of 19.9 to 22.2 °C (68 to 72 °F). The coldest are December, January, and February, with low temperatures of -1.4 to 0 °C (29 to 32 °F)

Site diagrams documented the sun path in the sky, the direction of the wind, the views from the freeway, main noise sourse and View of the site and park. Therefore, those kinds of consideration were token to effect on the decision.

We can see from section A-A that the architect focus to design a green building so that he has designed it to provide a good natural light using different mythology if we start from the top of the building we can see skylight dome and green roof beside it. And we will talk about that more in details in next pages.

Also we can see the internal side that he provides the hall with hidden light that give a nice and relaxing light. It also has large windows that allow the sun light to get into the hall during the day time. Finally, if we come to see the ground floor we can see the star have different railing which is glass to give a good first expiration to anyone enter this the block apartment. Plus, we can see the height of the ground floor is higher than the other levels to give a good space to the commercial units.

Green roof can be used to provide for rainwater detention or retention, to increase the thermal resistance and capacitance of a building roof, to reduce the urban heat island effect, and to provide green space for animals and people on what would otherwise be a hard-surfaced area. Green roofs are of two basic types: extensive and intensive.

Extensive green roofs have a relatively shallow soil base, making them lighter, less expensive, and easier to maintain than intensive green roofs. Extensive roofs usually have limited plant diversity, typically consisting of sedum (succulents), grasses, mosses, and herbs. They are often not accessible by building tenants, but may provide for “natural” views from adjacent rooms or neighbouring buildings.

Space: physical, perceptual, conceptual, behavioural Firstly, We can see on the pictures here that the architect try to make two view of the building where each side represent to the people walking around the building that it is two different building but it is actually one building has two faces.

Secondly, The architect try to make a positive and negative space at same time so he use the idea of (Water Zig-Zag) where he make two positive space and two negative space of movement. Plus, he add some sculpture (as the picture top right) to harmonize with the modernism (Business building) and Historical part (Historical Part on the north side)

In related to a vertical travel like Stairways and lift: the width of stairway provides a visual clue to the public or private nature of the stairway. narrow steep stairway can lead to more private places. while wide, shallow steps can serve as an incitation But on the other hand lift is the same in related to the size of the lift.

Scale / Proportion

Human eyes did not look at things as an architect or engineering drawing from all sides it always look at things as a perspective view that they use to it and enjoy it. Therefore, the architect took this and applied to his building to make the building look in angle (perspective view) from all side. and the good thing about this is like a human face and the noise represent the angle and the

other side divide the light to each side of the building so people feel welcoming and not facing a soled high wall that keep the light away even in the day time.

As we can see from the picture below that the building had been design to be in very narrow place where it didn’t have much space to been seen from a long distance other than three streets. The architect has been putting the building in a larger area not to archive much square shape rather than a narrow rectangle shape and this

brought us to discuss the shape of the building it is not a fixed shape (Square, rectangle, triangle ... etc.) and it design in this shape because he was aiming to make the building as he expressed in French “Vis-à-Vis” which mean (Face to face) view all around the building.

So by this we have the building in unregulated shape having a certain view from all sides (See the sketches).

So in general the architect found that the sun is acceptable to the site and can make an overheating during the summer so this problem need to be sort by the architect.

I have been using Google earth to see if there is any slop on the site that might influence the architect and I have found that there is no slop on the site NOTE: Google earth picture is not accurate that been taken since 2006 without taking into account the extension that been taken for business part and the building that I am analysing

Shading devices can significantly reduce building heat gains from solar radiation while maintaining opportunities for day lighting, views, and natural ventilation. Conversely, carefully designed shading can admit direct solar radiation during times of the year when such energy is desired to passively heat a building. While the window (and sky-light) is often the focus of shading devices, walls and roofs can also be shaded to help reduce heat gains through the opaque building envelope.

Radiation is an energy form that does not require a material medium through which to travel. Energy from the sun reaches the earth entirely through radiation. Solar radiation consists of visible (light), ultraviolet, and infrared radiation components. When solar radiation strikes a sur-face, the radiation may be reflected, absorbed, or transmitted depend-ing upon the nature of the surface. For example, a fair percentage of solar radiation passes through a

typical window, while some of that transmitted solar radiation striking a floor will be absorbed (as heat) and some will be reflected.

The percentage of solar radiation that passes through a window and into a building depends upon the properties of the glass and the window assembly. Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) is a dimensionless. number (generally falling between 0 and 1) that gives an indication of how much of the solar radiation incident upon a glazing assembly reaches the inside of a building. An SHGC of 1 means that WV of incident solar radiation passes through the window or skylight An SHGC of 0.2 indicates that 20% of the incident solar radiation is passed into the interior of the building. (It is important to remember that a window also transmits heat via conduction and convection ) Shading coefficient (SC).

Living room is one of the most importent area in the house or apartment because there where family gathering and chating and sharing thoughts and ideas.

The Liveing room design to get as much as possible of natural light so the occupance won’t need to turn the light on during the day time (or summer time). Plus, He decide to paint the apartment on white colour so once the sun enter the apartment it will reflect on the wood floor (which is on lighter colour) and continue to reflect on the rest of the living arae. This will save a money for the occupanc for not turning the light and heating on because the glass that used on that living area. and during the summer all what it need is to open the windows to refrech the air.

The second space is the Enterance space which lead to the apartments floors.

We can see that the architect design the main doors to be in a glass door to allow the light to get in during the day time. also he make a reflected light from the celling to allow a quite light come down.

Basicly he want the space feel welcome therefore he allow the light come though all the lobby in all floors

Materials, texture, colour This part divide into two side first is the EXTERNAL and INTERNAL. EXTERNAL There are 4 main material that been using on that building Glass The glass designed to be half reflected and by using the idea of “Vis-à-Vis” that we wouldn’t have a transparency glass because it reflect the surrounding before any one from outside could see what is inside

Wood This is the touch, which make the building look different from different angle Smooth reflected marble We can see that the marble that had been design to be beside the windows that have the effect of reflecting as the glass doing so from distance you still see it as a glass windows but the fact is a marble that act just like the Stone

Sandstone tiles First is the light colour that make it brighter once the sun come crows it. Second, it has a hard or rough surface to unwelcome the people to touch it.

INTERNAL On the apartment floor, the architect use a light wooden floor that reflect the sun and internal lights around the apartments. Also he use a white painting that help to reflect the lights and make it much brighter.

For the lobby and public halls he make a black floor and white painting the stair has a large window that allow much light to come in.

Windows was design to be a fill wall window and the idea behind this is that make the view from the window look like a picture and this is for a bedroom because it need much privet. However, for the living room the whole wall is a window. And this make the people enjoy the view and have a feeling for the space to be larger than it actually is.
