A Note From the Arts Faculty The arts save lives. This is a fact!

Arts education is PROVEN to have a positive impact on graduation rates, grades/ test scores, and mental health!

With this year's focus on health and wellness, it just makes sense to make the advancements in our arts programs that we did. Our students need outlets with which to share their talents, passions, and expressions. Whether it be paper mache, acting in a play, singing a song, or creating a robot our students never have a lack of ways to express themselves.

Robots, Coding, and Tech OH MY!

Picking Up STEAM STEAM, the latest in education innovation combines a love of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) with the creativity of the Arts to make STEAM! The idea is that stopping the separation of these concepts will cause growth and innovation in both fields! Mrs. Surowiec (Pictured right) makes sure we're all well-rounded!

What's a MakerSpace?

The dictionary defines a makerspace as being: "a place in which people with shared interests, especially in computing or technology, can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge."

Sounds like a perfect fit!

Greenwood Goes Under the Sea!

Greenwood's First MainStage Show At the end of March and beginning of April Greenwood saw the run of its very first full mainstage theatre production: The Little Mermaid Jr. This show held auditions in late November, began rehearsals beginning of January, and was the result of months of hard work by many of our students. From the set pieces to the costumes to the stage management, this production was teacher guided, but student owned.

The last piece of the puzzle? Creating the world of the show. While Greenwood does not have an auditorium, through the generosity of The 5&Dime Theatre Co., our gym coaches, and guest lighting designer Gabriel Barnert, the cast and crew were able to go "Under the Sea" in the Greenwood School Gymnasium.

The students in the Greenwood School drama department are looking forward eagerly to next year's production after selling out all three nights!

INTERVIEW WITH SCUTTLE (JJ DAY)

1. How was your experience performing in Greenwood's first mainstage show? a. It was exciting to know that it was Greenwood's first fully staged production with tech, costumes, and everything!

2. What was the best part of it? Your favorite memory? a. I loved interacting with Jay (Sebastian) during Kiss the Girl.It was a lot of fun!

3. What are you looking forward to next year? a. I'm excited for the opportunity to learn more, whether it be choreography, singing, or any other methods.

3 Questions with Mr. Kaz Why is visual art important for our students?

The visual arts provide a number of different ways to learn and serves a diversity of learning styles. The thing I really love about the visual arts is that I can teach process to my students. Students learn about the creative process through technique, art foundations, sourcing and observation, and art history. For our students, in particular, it is teaching for understanding in order to impact their learning skills.

What was your favorite project from this year?

My favorites were definitely the ceramics projects. With my high school classes this spring, I had them create a ceramic shark’s tooth. It was a cool subject to work with and it gave the kids lots of options for the form and shape. Aside from that, I have really enjoyed connecting a variety of projects to the Florida environment.

If you could lead any project with the Greenwood kids, what would it be?

Welding…definitely welding. It’s cool. Kids with learning differences get it. And, I love the way it teaches process.

(I’m working on it!) However, what I really love to do is collaborate. I’ve had limited opportunities this year because I was just trying to find my way but I’m excited for next year.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR CHORUS Directed by Snell and Wimbish

WINTER SHOWCASE Featured performances by Ms. Brunkala's ASL class, the extra-curricular chorus, and Thespian Troupe 10512 (who even received mock-judging)!

Starting Thespian Troupe #10512 In October of 2022, Greenwood officially chartered its thespian troupe, a chapter of the International Thespian Society. The ITS is an honor society celebrating student acheivement in theatre through theatre festivals, competitions at the district and state festival, and community service.

This academic year, students in the troupe competed at the district 2 festival and had many pieces qualify for state competition. In March of 2023, 10 students attended the state thespian festival for a week in Tampa.

This was wildly successful as Troupe 10512 earned 3 Excellents, and 2 Superiors; saw multiple professional-grade productions; and took educational workshops!

Don't worry none, they got themselves powers too.

JUNEAFIER: Are ya now nice to meet cha (beat) wait aren't cha those two the coppers are looking for?

MONICA: Yes and wrongly accused might I add.

JUNEAFIER: Well, you are welcome here for now (Juneafier walks back to the stove and put something in the pot without anyone knowing) Oh honey did you lock up the moonshine shack.

RATTTER: Yeah i did aint none getting in there.

GENE: Thank you very much, both of you.

RATTER: No problem, it ain't nothing for old friends.

2023 Excerpt from a Narrative Story by Shelby Waller

Jackson says, “I may have a broken arm but that doesn’t stop me from saving the world. I learned that even if you have a disability, you can still achieve what you believe you can do.”

The news reporters say, “I like that piece of advice. That is very inspirational and nice.”

After Jackson made it on the news, he even gains followers on social media.

Everyone starts loving him. Jackson is out of his squirrel form, but he still has a broken arm. He starts giving inspirational speeches to his fans. His fans really appreciate him and he continues to be a hero every single day.

Several months later, Jackson starts to make a TV show about showing ways to be a hero and giving inspirational life lessons that should be learned for people. His TV show starts to become very popular. The inspiration starts spreading to people around the world.

Jackson calls his TV show “Spreading Inspiration and Kindness.”
