Thank you all for coming to see Greenwood’s fourth mainstage production, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
I pride myself on picking theatre works that give the students something in return for their hard work, and this show was no exception. I wanted them to see characters that have struggles that they may have identifed with in the past. The characters you will see here tonight are quirky, out of this world, and even ridiculous. They’re also kids who have struggles that are grounded in growing up, pressure, and self-image. This marriage of the serious and the comical gives the kids a healthy outlet to explore these ideas.
Not to mention…this is NOT an easy show! These students have worked extremely hard for the last several weeks to bring you this show that has become so important to them. Especially this last week, they’ve inspired me beyond belief as they’ve put forward a herculean effort rehearsing this show and supporting one another. Please show them some appreciation tonight. Clap for them, cry for them, laugh at their jokes; I know I’ll be!
Lastly, I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you for being with us here tonight and supporting the arts at Greenwood.
