Through my artwork, "Wading pollution," I aimed to communicate environmental issues and highlight the efforts of a climate hero – Silvia López Chavez, a contemporary artist who has made significant contributions to raising awareness about climate change and ocean conservation through her artwork.
Chavez's efforts as a Climate Hero fill me with hope and inspiration, reinforcing my belief in our ability to restore the beauty and vitality of our planet through collective resilience. As an artist myself, I find art to be a powerful medium for storytelling and evoking emotions. Throughout the creative process, I experienced a range of feelings, from urgency and sadness when depicting pollution to hope and awe when portraying vibrant marine life. My message to viewers is one of empowerment and appreciation for the positive impacts Chavez and her organizations have. Through exploring this, I have learned about the delicate balance of marine ecosystems, the devastating effects of pollution, and the urgent need for collective action.
This unique perspective encourages viewers to engage with the piece from the viewpoint of the evil queen, subtly implicating them in the narrative's darker aspects. In creating "Bite?" I chose digital art for its ability to blend various textures and effects. The use of contrasting colors adds dynamism to the piece, influencing the mood and enhancing the symbolism woven throughout the artwork.
My artwork, "Bite?" draws inspiration from the digital artist Kuraha Shirei, known for her vibrant colors, untutored lines, and captivating storytelling. My digital illustration features the classic fairytale of Snow White, portraying her with an apple, standing behind a mirror. The mirror signifies the impending danger lurking around Snow White, who remains unaware of the threat.
The composition, which carefully utilizes space, ensures that Snow White is the focal point, drawing the viewer's attention directly to her. The essence of my piece lies in juxtaposing the innocence and charm typically associated with fairytales against a backdrop of unease and danger.
This contrast is not just a stylistic choice but a narrative tool, hinting at the often-overlooked darker elements of these stories. My aim was to capture the simplicity and raw appeal of naive art while adding a sense of depth and complexity. "Bite?" is more than a fairytale illustration; it's a portal into a world where the lines between innocence and danger, viewer and character, are intriguingly blurred.
