MVMA Task Force Assists in Expansion of Supervision Levels for Registered Veterinary Technicians

On March 3, 2025, efforts to enhance supervision standards for Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) reached a significant milestone. The Missouri Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) RVT Utilization Task Force comprised of veterinarians and Missouri Veterinary Technician Association (MVTA) RVTs and the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board (MVMB) successfully amended 20 CSR 2270-4.060 Minimum Standards for Supervision, along with the Required Levels of Supervision table. Following the formal rulemaking process, these amendments were approved and signed by Governor Mike Kehoe. The updated regulations will take effect on April 30, 2025. These revisions were driven by the goal of improving the utilization of RVTs within veterinary practices while ensuring that the changes do not introduce the undesirable risks associated with mid-level practitioner roles. With these updates, the Missouri Veterinary Practice Act now provides expanded levels of supervision for RVTs. It remains the responsibility of the supervising veterinarian to exercise professional judgment in evaluating an RVT’s competency before delegating tasks or issuing verbal or written instructions. While RVTs play an essential role in veterinary practice, the supervising veterinarian retains ultimate responsibility and legal accountability for the technician’s actions within the clinical setting. The Required Levels of Supervision chart below includes the latest amendments, with all modifications highlighted in red for clarity. These regulatory changes mark a progressive step in veterinary practice, ensuring that supervision standards align with

Hello,

Missouri Veterinary Medical Association

2500 Country Club Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65109 573-636-8612 • Fax: 573-659-7175 • Email: mvma@movma.org

As the vice president of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA), I have this opportunity to communicate with fellow veterinarians like you.

The preceding information has told you a lot about who MVMA is, what we do, and what we’ve done lately for veterinarians in Missouri.

Most Importantly...

The MVMA does so much for its members behind the scenes that you may not realize. In these changing times, we are dealing with many issues that are making the practice of veterinary medicine a more complicated endeavor. These issues have two threads in common:

1) They are larger than the individual. It is important to stand together as the parties on the other side of these issues are standing together.

2) They cannot be dealt with on the national level. Like it or not, these are state issues, dealing with state law, and state agencies, concerning your license to practice in Missouri. The AVMA is very important, but in matters of veterinary practice in Missouri, where you are most affected, it is the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association that is fighting the battles on your behalf.

The MVMA is protecting our back so we can practice what we’re educated to do.

2025 is an important and exciting year for the MVMA. We need the support of all Missouri veterinarians. We need you as a part of our veterinary family. I hope you will join us.

Sincerely,
