On the Cover...

As the vibrant colors of autumn settle in, we’re reminded of the season of gratitude and reflection. We hope you take time to enjoy the beauty of the season with those who matter most. Autumn also brings the anticipation of a tradition we all look forward to: the MVMA Annual Convention.

This event is the perfect opportunity to step away from the clinic, recharge, and connect with both familiar faces and new colleagues. With an array of continuing education offerings, including hands-on wet labs, insightful workshops, and lively discussions, there’s something for everyone.

Sending your staff to the convention is an excellent way to invest in their development. Let’s not forget about the fun: the Foundation drawing and silent auction on Friday night, the lively Exhibit Hall Party, and the celebratory Awards Ceremony on Saturday. We look forward to seeing you in January, where the warmth of camaraderie and professional growth await at the 2026 MVMA Convention.

From the President

Hello MVMA Members!

I was lucky to have a small involvement with the MU V.E.T./ MVMA event on August 20th and the new Convocation Ceremony for incoming DVM students at MU on August 22nd. I met with many of the new students and was impressed with their energy and engagement. Based on my interactions, I believe the class of 2029 will be a great addition to our profession. The Convocation Ceremony at the Missouri Theatre was a new event this year for MU. Thanks to Hills Pet Nutrition for their support to help MU CVM host the welcome ceremony. Also, thanks to an anonymous

donor that created an endowment to supply the incoming students with a Littmann stethoscope engraved with their name. This is a great gift for our 1st year students and will potentially minimize the panic that can occur due to misplaced stethoscopes. In addition, the MVMA supplied the students with customizable water bottle and laptop decals proudly stating “Supporting Future Veterinarians”—a small but meaningful way to show our encouragement for their journey ahead.

I hope many of you were able to attend your District meetings in August and September. There are a couple scheduled for October including the SEVMA in Cape Girardeau on the 7th, and the SWVMA in Springfield on the 26th. These meetings are a great opportunity to meet new colleagues, catch up with old

From the Secretary-Treasurer

You can’t step in the same river twice

“You never step in the same river twice”. This philosophical concept is most often attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, not the song in the Disney movie Pocahontas. The full expression is: “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man”. So what exactly does this mean for us today?

A river is constantly in flux. The water that passes at a certain moment in time will never pass that same point again. That water is now on its way to another body of water downstream. Even the river bed is constantly changing. The rocks, sediment, and even living organisms in the river are affected by the passage of the water on its journey. So even if we were to step into a river at the same spot at a different time, the river has changed.

We will also be changed with the passage of time. We grow older and, hopefully, wiser. So even if we are dipping our toes in the same spot on the river at another time, the experiences we have had between the times have changed us. Maybe the changes are subtle or perhaps major events have changed us in substantial ways. But we will never be the same person as the one that first stepped in that river at that first moment. Then there is the impossibility of repeating the past. The combined changes in both the observer and the observed means that no experience can ever be truly repeated. Even if you revisit a place or a person, the circumstances, and your own perspective, have shifted. How, then, does this apply to us as veterinarians today? It can be applied to both personal and professional growth. We must embrace the impermanence of life. In order to grow, we must accept that our past selves are gone and that each new moment is an opportunity. We need to learn to “go with the flow”. Just as the river can carve a new path, each of our experiences – including

friends, learn a little bit, and have a great meal. It’s a great opportunity that we should all try to take advantage of.

The 2026 MVMA Annual Convention will be held January 29th through February 1st at the Wyndam (formerly Holiday Inn) Executive Center in Columbia. Please plan to attend.

Here’s to a great fall of 2025! Please contact the MVMA office, me, or any member of the Executive Board if you have any questions or concerns about the MVMA or any of the many issues that involve veterinary medicine. We are always happy to help in any way possible. I very much look forward to seeing all of you at a district meeting or at the Annual Convention.

Sincerely, Dave

disappointments – will shape and determine how we learn and adapt to those experiences. Growth only happens in the present and not by rehashing the past. Just as the water must move forward, so too, we must focus our energies on acquiring new skills and perspectives as we go. We must create a new future instead of being defined by our past. We must remember that growth is a process and not an event. The small, inevitable changes of life and the reflections of those accumulate, resulting in significant and meaningful transformations over our lifetimes, just like the river’s constant journey.

As veterinarians we never see the same patient or client twice. We are changed by each interaction so that the next time we see them there will be differences. This January, we will gather once more in Columbia but we will not be the same as last year. Still, come and step into the “new” river with your “new self” and share with all your colleagues so that we all may become better. See you then.

Sincerely,

David Wilson, DVM

Cliff Miller Named 2025 MU-CVM Alumnus of the Year

The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine has named Cliff Miller, DVM, the 2025 Alumnus of the Year, honoring his professional achievements, leadership in organized veterinary medicine and commitment to community service.

Incoming Veterinary Students Gather for V.E.T. Orientation

A Moberly, Missouri, native, Miller, graduated from the Mizzou College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000 and soon began his career in Gladstone, Missouri, at a large animal practice. In 2003, he returned home to open Green Hills Veterinary Clinic, which has grown from a one-veterinarian operation into a thriving mixed animal practice employing multiple veterinarians and staff. Alongside building a successful clinic, Miller has been a tireless advocate for veterinary medicine in Missouri. He has served the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) as president, board chair and legislative chair, working alongside state leaders to shape policy and secure vital support for the profession. His efforts helped ensure funding for Mizzou’s Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory and the Veterinary Student Loan Repayment Program. In a nomination letter for Miller, Leah Cohn, DVM, PhD, DAVCIM, a professor and chief of Mizzou’s small animal internal medicine service wrote, “Dr. Miller is an outstanding alumnus of the CVM. His service to veterinary medicine, his community and the state of Missouri clearly demonstrate why he is so deserving of this award.”

Miller’s service reaches far beyond the profession. He has served on executive boards for a regional bank, local schools and economic development organizations. He is also active in Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus and other civic causes, including chairing a fundraiser for children with developmental disabilities.

His contributions have earned him some of the field’s highest honors, including MVMA Veterinarian of the Year (2020), the MVMA Distinguished Legislative Leadership Award (2018) and the MVMA Distinguished Service Award (2022). Through leadership, service and dedication, Miller has strengthened both veterinary medicine and his community. His career exemplifies the values of the College of Veterinary Medicine and offers a model for future veterinarians at Mizzou and beyond.

MU CVM hosted their Veterinary Enrichment Training (V.E.T) orientation event on August 20th at the Level Up Entertainment venue and Adams Conference Center in Columbia, Mo. This event gives incoming MU CVM veterinary students the opportunity to build friendships with their classmates, meet faculty, staff, and MVMA members and have some fun along the way.

A special thank you to those who participated: MVMA Executive Director Julie Braun and MVMA members, Drs. David Wilson, Shelia Taylor, Laura Moon, Kenton Morgan, Jessica Stroupe, Chuck Barry, Christi Belew, Jason Nickell, Tom Rose, Tim Evans, Melissa Bolden, Bruce Whittle and MVMA Alternate Student Board member, Lillie Snider. We are hoping these students have a great year and encourage them to join the MVMA! See page 8 for more.

Another Great Year at the Fair Thanks to Our Members

It was a great time at the fair with MVMA members making new friends with lots of questions (and stories) at the association’s booth during the Missouri State Fair, August 7-17 in Sedalia, Mo.

Over 30 members donated a day of their time reaching out to the public with information about the MVMA, answers to questions about pets, and good conversation.

Our volunteers were kept quite busy throughout the event visiting with fair-goers and spreading the word about good health care for their animals and encouraging children that they can be a veterinarian, too.

Again this year, the MVMA combined its booth with the MU College of Veterinary Medicine. Thank you to MU CVM students, Grace McIntosh and Mason Knepper for helping.

Volunteers greeted booth visitors, answered a myriad of questions, and handed out bookmarks, coloring pages, brochures on MVMA programs, and information on pet health and welfare. Emphasis was also made on the MVMA’s Missouri Stocker/Feeder Quality Assurance Programs and the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation’s Animal Archives of Missouri and Veterinary Museum.

A big thanks goes to these MVMA volunteer State Fair Ambassadors...

Expansion of Supervision Levels for Registered Veterinary Technicians Finalized

On March 3, 2025, efforts to enhance supervision standards for Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) reached a significant milestone. The Missouri Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) RVT Utilization Task Force comprised of veterinarians and Missouri Veterinary Technician Association (MVTA) RVTs and the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board (MVMB) successfully amended 20 CSR 2270-4.060 Minimum Standards for Supervision, along with the Required Levels of Supervision table. Following the formal rulemaking process, these amendments were approved and signed by Governor Mike Kehoe. The updated regulations took effect on April 30, 2025.

These revisions were driven by the goal of improving the utilization of RVTs within veterinary practices while ensuring that the changes do not introduce the undesirable risks associated with mid-level practitioner roles.

With these updates, the Missouri Veterinary Practice Act now provides expanded levels of supervision for RVTs.

It remains the responsibility of the supervising veterinarian to exercise professional judgment in evaluating an RVT’s competency before delegating tasks or issuing verbal or written instructions. While RVTs play an essential role in veterinary practice, the supervising veterinarian retains ultimate responsibility and legal accountability for the technician’s actions within the clinical setting.

The Required Levels of Supervision chart below includes the latest amendments, with all modifications highlighted in red for clarity.

These regulatory changes mark a progressive step in veterinary practice, ensuring that supervision standards align with industry advancements while maintaining the highest level of patient care and professional accountability.

Unpacking the Science Behind Resiliency, Wellbeing

AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference keynote speaker shares how acceptance, belonging, and even dark humor can help with weathering life’s storms

Wellbeing is not about being your best self but doing what is best for yourself. There’s a massive difference between the two, says Robyne Hanley-Dafoe, EdD, an education and psychology instructor.

“We don’t do wellness for wellness’s sake. We do it because we want to feel better. … We want to keep living these big, bold lives,” she said.

Most people approach managing their wellbeing on a physical or emotional dimension, but the best approach involves tending to eight dimensions, which she outlined in her talk at the 2025 AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference. Doing so also creates the ability to become more resilient.

She gave more insights and tools, including five pillars of everyday resilience, during the keynote “Everyday Resiliency: How to Master Working and Living Well”.

Traits of resilient people

Hanley-Dafoe received her master’s in education from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and her doctorate, focusing on educational leadership in higher education, from Western University in London, Ontario. She has spent years researching the topic of resiliency, interviewing people all over the world who have gone through remarkable circumstances. Yet she found that they often wouldn’t describe themselves as strong or hearty.

“I would ask them, ‘Well, how did you get through this?’ They said, ‘I was resilient because life didn’t give me another choice. I was resilient because I had to be. I just had to show up for the people and groups and communities that needed me,’” she said.

With the data collected, Hanley-Dafoe devised what she calls the theory or practice of everyday resiliency. This is what people do every day to get through the most difficult experiences of their lives. She found five traits or practices

that gave people the best opportunity to be well and to meet their goals. They are as follows:

Belonging: A person needs a team or individual in their corner with whom they can celebrate, be open and honest, and feel safe to be themselves. Having a few meaningful relationships is key, she said, because “if you get those right, you’re going to be able to weather whatever comes your way.”

Perspective: This means operating with head and heart in alignment. People who do this well, keeping the big picture in mind, are able to prioritize the things that matter most on any given day.

Acceptance: This requires understanding what is in and outside of one’s control. It’s knowing how to put energy and influence toward areas where a person has the most power to affect change. “We spend more of our time thinking about what we cannot do and don’t have, versus recognizing where we do have agency, accepting our controllables, and working with them,” Hanley-Dafoe said.

Hope: A person must consciously choose to live a hopefilled life, trusting they are on the right path and will be OK. Having a proactive strategy or mindful practice to stay hope filled is the only way to be of service in any capacity, she said.

Humor: Resilient people are funny, though often it’s a dark type of humor. Despite going through adversity, the people she studied somehow had fun or a softness around them. But there are biological underpinnings to this, as the body releases a natural tranquilizer when a person laughs. Laughter gives a moment of reprieve because it blocks pain receptors.

Wellbeing boosters

Hanley-Dafoe specializes not only in resiliency, but also navigating stress and change, wellness in the workplace, and optimal performance both at home and at work. She has (cont. next page)

(cont. from page 15)

authored two books: “Calm Within the Storm” and, more recently, “Stress Wisely: How to be Well in an Unwell World.”

Other than physical health, she says the other dimensions of wellbeing are spiritual, emotional, intellectual, social, environmental, occupational, and financial. All these aspects must be considered when aiming to improve personal wellbeing.

To help people feel better, Hanley-Dafoe noted five forces of recovery:

Movement: Research says 7,000 steps a day decreases all-cause mortality by 60%. That can be a 30-minute walk plus regular activity. Consistent movement and practice help.

Connection: Having meaningful conversations with others helps people feel more grounded and regulated. She recommends that when you reunite with someone, smile brightly. “The small things aren’t that small after all. Imagine walking into a space and feeling seen simply by somebody being excited that you are there.”

Nature: Being indoors all day can make people feel overwhelmed and anxious, but going outdoors dramatically increases their ability to navigate our way and open up to possibilities, she says.

Music: Songs can help us process emotion. “If we’re having thousands of emotions a day, and we’re not able to process them in real time, listening to the right soundtrack or album can actually allow us to move through our emotional landscapes,” Hanley-Dafoe said.

Gratitude: Appreciation, feeling fondness, and reflection can change people on a physiological level.

Other practices she mentioned include: not scrolling on devices for too long, which creates a numbing effect; setting goals and “finish lines” and celebrating wins; and, above all, resting.

“If you’re looking for a fix of trying to do better or feel better, but you’re not sleeping, you’re essentially stepping over $100 bills to pick up pennies, right?” Hanley-Dafoe said. “There’s no amount of supplementation that is going to replace the feeling of being well rested. Going back to the basics is extremely important.”

MU-CVM Students Participate in Tiger’s Root Canal at Springfield’s Dickerson Park Zoo

Reprinted by permission: KY3 News, Springfield, Mo.

It’s not every day you see a tiger getting dental work, let alone a root canal. But that’s just what Mizzou staff and students came together to do.

The school diagnosed Cinta the tiger from Dickerson Park Zoo with a troublesome tooth. The zoo contacted the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine, showing the team that one of Cinta’s teeth had fractured.

Many students had the opportunity to contribute to the process, making it a valuable learning experience.

“We know that eventually that tooth would become infected if it wasn’t treated with a root canal,” said Dr. Stephanie Carle, the Dickerson Park Zoo veterinarian. “And so for us, knowing that that’s not going to happen now, he’s going to be able to maintain that part of the tooth that he has left and then use it to chew on bones and play with toys. You know, I know a lot of animals will adapt to losing their teeth, but if we can help them keep those teeth, that’s what we want to do.”

After the procedure, the vet team placed a hard seal on the top of Cinta’s tooth, making sure it stays healthy and can withstand everything a tiger may put it through.

MU CVM in Need of Volunteers for Screening Out-of-State Applicants for Admission

MU CVM is once again seeking volunteers to help with screening out-of-state applications for admissions. We are so grateful for the help of so many over the last few years and we have loved hearing all of the positive feedback regarding your participation in the process. Can you believe that we are screening applicants for the MU – CVM Class of 2030?!

The Journey to the Purple Leash Project. Nearly a decade ago, a Purina associate read about the difficult decision many abuse survivors with pets are forced to make: stay with an abuser or leave a beloved pet behind. It seemed unfair that pets, who may be the only source of unconditional love and support for a survivor, weren’t considered. So, we decided to help.

Volunteers will be placed into “teams” to review around 45 applications. This process will take place from October to November. There will be an approximately onehour training session, then you will work on your own to review assigned applications. Finally, you will have meeting either in person or via Zoom with your teammates (one current veterinary student and one faculty member) to determine a mutually agreeable list of applicants to be granted a live interview for further consideration for admission.

Click below to volunteer, or contact Dr. Leah Cohn (cohnl@missouri.edu) if you have additional questions.

We so appreciate your effort to make sure we continue to train the next group of outstanding MU CVM DVMs!

Since then, Purina helped one of the largest domestic violence shelters in the U.S. to become a leading voice and shining example of pet-friendly sheltering. We also helped create the PAWS Act Coalition in support of the Pets and Women Safety (PAWS) Act, which helps domestic abuse survivors and their pets by advocating for federal resources.

Today, our goal is to help ensure at least 25 percent of U.S. domestic violence shelters offer pet-friendly services by the end of 2025. We’ve already provided grants totaling $1.5 million to 52 shelters across the country, and nearly every state has at least one petfriendly shelter, but our long-term goal is to fundamentally change the landscape of domestic abuse services for survivors with pets, so no survivor has to choose between their own safety and the safety of their pet

Clinics Encouraged to Consider Donating Pet Oxygen Masks to Local Fire Departments

Agreat idea and a great lifesaver: the MVMA has developed a step-by-step guide to make it easy for your clinic to donate these oxygen mask kits to your local fire departments.

The Pet Oxygen Mask Project, an initiative of the MVMA Animal Welfare Committee in cooperation with the MVMA Emergency Management and Public Health Committee and the MVMA Missouri Volunteer Veterinary Corps, is working towards equipping Missouri fire trucks with pet oxygen masks.

To start off the initiative, the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association presented the Boone County Fire District with 10 Pet Oxygen Masks. The presentation was held at the Boone County Fire Protection District Headquarters in Columbia, MO. Two local television stations covered the event.

The pet oxygen masks are specifically designed for animals and each kit comes with three different size masks that can be used on any size dog or cat, as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, birds, and more. The current cost per kit is $130.00. One kit per truck. Go to movma.org, then the ”Resources” tab at the top, then “Member Resources” page. Click on the link to the WAGN pet oxygen website. Equipping fire trucks with pet oxygen masks will give firefighters the proper equipment they would need when trying to revive a pet that has suffered from smoke inhalation.

For added public relations benefit, arrange a time with your local news outlet to make a presentation or highlight the program on your social media pages. These kits have saved many lives when they were available.

A recent apartment fire in O’Fallon, Mo. necessitated the use of an oxygen mask to help “Jill” breathe again after succumbing to smoke inhalation.

Log in to movma.org, then loom for the ”Resources” tab at the top. Look for the “Member Resources” page. Click on the link to the WAGN pet oxygen website.

Kits include three sizes of masks and cost $130/kit.

MVMA’s Quality Assurance Program

What Is the Missouri Stocker/Feeder Quality Assurance Program?

The Missouri Stocker Feeder Quality Assurance Program is designed to meet the quality improvement and pre-conditioning needs of producers, feeders, and consumers. This program educates participants in immunology, animal well-being and the economics of disease. Participation in the program increases producer accountability for quality and safety of the product they sell.

How Does the Program Work?

Veterinarians and producers must be MSFQAP-certified. Veterinarians must also be Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certified. Veterinarians are certified online or during the MVMA convention. Producers are certified by their veterinarian. Veterinarians and producers learn how they can influence carcass quality and consumer confidence by monitoring where and when injections are administered. Once certified, the producer may participate in the program at one of three levels (white, red or blue tag). The three-level approach allows all producers the opportunity to match their level of management and facilities to the level of participation.

Level 1: Show-Me Select (White Tag)

• Participating veterinarians and producers must be certified.

• Calves must be properly identified with an approved ear tag. Tag numbers will be listed on an approved certificate.

• External and internal parasite control is administered.

• Calves will be dehorned and healed. Calves will also be castrated with a knife and healed or verified to be steers.

• Vaccinations: 7-way clostridial, IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, Mannheimia haemolytica with leukotoxoid, (Histophilus is optional.)

• Cattle must be born on the producer’s farm. A range of birthdates or the birthdate of the oldest calf in the group must be recorded.

• Bull in and out dates will be provided.

• Individual calf treatments will be recorded to include date, product, dosage, route of administration and injection site.

• Vaccinations must be given no younger than four months of age and at least 21 days before sale.

Level 2: Show-Me Superior (Red Tag)

• Weaned 45 days before offering for sale.

• Meet Level 1 requirements - NOTE: Initial vaccinations may be given at an age determined by an attending veterinarian.

• In addition, a second round of vaccinations must be given using the following guidelines:

• A 7-way clostridial as well as a modified live vaccine containing IBR, PI3, BVD and BRSV must be administered;

• Histophilus somni is optional;

• Only one dose of Manheimia heamolytica is required if that dose is administered to calves 5 months of age or older;

• The time frame between initial and second vaccinations must be a minimum of 21 days and all vaccinations must be completed at least seven days prior to sale;

• If a veterinarian determines initial vaccinations should be given to calves less than 4 months of age then second vaccinations must not occur until calves are 5 months of age or older.

Level 3: Show-Me Supreme (Blue Tag)

• Meet Level 1 and Level 2 requirements.

• All cattle must be tested and be negative for persistent BVD infection.

• Genetic information is optional.

For more information and certifications, visit the MVMA website at www.movma.org/page/MSFQAP. An MSFQAP Producer Manual, veterinarian MSFQAP and BQA certifications, tag submission Part-1 and 2 Forms, and other materials are available online.

NEW: Payment requested at the time of tag and supply orders.
