For those who have only visited Lanzarote during the Summer season, it would be difficult or even abstract to imagine that a usually desertlike and dry landscape -due to the volcanic conditions of the island- where there are not many trees, except for the palm trees that have been planted by Man over the years, can change as if by magic in just a few days into a completely different place totally covered with an stunning green cloak that soon will be used by mother Nature to announce, in her unique and wonderful language of aromas and colours, the arrival of Spring. Four heavy showers in December were enough for this miracle to start transforming Lanzarote into a paradise that is worth enjoying on site. During Spring, we have an ephemeral landscape just as all seasons usually are, but so intense while it lasts, that the chance to experience it by yourself will remain in your memory as a perennial tree. Think about having a walk among silent volcanoes now dressed in their best “clothes”. Just you, the momentary sighing of the wind, the heady perfume of the flowers, the dreamy sundowns... Viviendo su propio reinado de icono pinup tatuada, acaba de aparecer en la portada de un CD para la banda “Nick Curran & The Lowlifes” y está preparando un proyecto de TV del que esperamos poder contaros muy pronto. Y es que los tiempos de ser sólo ama de casa, sencillamente han pasado a la historia.

Well known in the tattoo world for the brand “Black Cat” (one of the best aftercare treatments for tattooed skin that actually exists on the market and fav of many of the best tattoists all over the globe), she launched the product in 2001 together with her husband, Chris Gunn, who’s also a renowned tattoo artist in the USA. And despite of her busy life as a business woman, she combines this with an alternative model career. Her sexy and inked body has appeared on dozens of covers and reports of tattoo and “Hot Rod” magazines, and of course she’s an regular guest at many tattoo conventions all across America. So imagine how busy her agenda is, between photoshootings and the wholesale orders she receives everyday. But she still finds a moment for baking delicious cupcakes which she enjoys decorating in imaginative and crazy ways. She says that all her mates are suffering from high blood sugar! Addicted herself to the sweets, she still totally mantains a good figure as you can appreciate here. Another of her hobbies is to train her doggies (she loves them as if they were her children) and lately she’s bought some Spanish DVD’s to learn the language to (in her own words) teach them how to bite in Spanish. Living her own reign as a tattooed PinUp, she’s just appeared on the cover of a CD for the band “Nick Curran and the Lowlifes” and she’s currently preparing a TV project which we hope to be able to inform you about very soon. Yeah, the times of being just a housewife are definately gone.

Nuestra PinUP del mes tiene una agenda de lo más ocupada y movidita. Conocida en el mundo del tatuaje por la marca “Black Cat” (uno de los mejores tratamientos aftercare para la piel recién tatuada que existen y favorito de grandes tatuadores a nivel mundial) que lanzó al mercado en el 2001 junto a su marido Chris Gunn, tatuador de renombre en USA. Aún así, Kristin combina su faceta de empresaria con la de modelo. Su cuerpo sexy y tintado la ha llevado a ocupar decenas de portadas de revistas especializadas en el sector y también en el circuito “Hot Rod” y cómo no, a ser invitada indispensable de múltiples convenciones de tatuaje por toda América.

Que EEUU es el lugar donde hay más PinUps y fotógrafos que se dedican a este estilo en particular, es algo más que obvio. Aquí comenzó sobre los años 40 este fenómeno artístico-cultural y desde luego muy femenino que ahora tiene cautivados a millones de personas en la red. Cuántas páginas, grupos, blogs, etc, deben existir dedicados a la estética PinUp? Intentar hacer un recuento sería como buscar una aguja en un pajar, seguro. Lo sorprendente en su caso es que además de disparar ella misma las fotos, confecciona manualmente todo el vestuario que lucen sus modelos, los accesorios y el atrezzo, e incluso los fondos están pintados a mano! This is the place where in the 40’s this artistic-cultural and above all ultra-femenine phenomenon started. Something that has captivated millions of people on the net nowadays. How many pages, groups, blogs, etc, there may exist about PinUp aesthetics? To try to count them would definitely be just like trying to look for a needle in a haystack. But without a doubt, from all the photographers (and the models), there are always a few who stand out and shine with their own light among the rest. But to say that our photographer of the month is only that, would certaintly be falling short of the mark, because GAYLA is an artist who is so complete that we cannot label her without thinking twice about it. “PASTEL VOLCANO es..Un delicioso bocado que hace siglos fue disfrutado una vez en Europa por nuestros ancestros y que ha sido redescubierto por nosotros para que lo disfrutes hoy tú también. El reinventado pastel está arrasando el mundo como una tormenta; de EEUU a Australia, pasando por Israel y Thailandia, todos quieren probar un trozo de este pastel...” Así nos presentan este novedoso, original a la vez que sencillo, sofisticado en los matices de su sabor y aroma, y sin duda revolucionario producto, sus reinventores Rafael Bocskai y Vance Richards, que han decidido importarlo a Lanzarote para que podamos disfrutar también de su exquisitez incomparable. Los chicos - ambos en su treinta-y-pocos - se mudaron desde Londres a Lanzarote en Noviembre del 2009 con la clara intención de presentar su producto en la isla. Reunieron fuerzas hace ahora 3 años, para realizar sus sueños, que incluían trasladarse a esta bonita y única isla y hacer algo por lo que ambos se sintiesen apasionados. Y su pasión es PASTEL VOLCANO. Vance nació en Londres - su familia es originaria de la isla caribeña Sta. Lucía - y trabajó durante 9 años como director de simulación médica en el Sistema de Salud Nacional Británico. Rafael es de origen griego y austríaco pero fue educado en Budapest, Hungría. Tras estudiar Turismo y Dirección de Hoteles, ganó una importante experiencia en la industria hotelera, trabajando en distintas partes del mundo, y más recientemente en Londres para el popular Intercontinental Hotels Group.
Su masa se compone únicamente de ingredientes básicos y sanos, siempre mezclados en fresco y presentados recién hechos. La masa se corta en tiras y se enrolla a medida en torno a un eje. Después se lleva a cocción en una parrilla al carbón o bien en un horno especializado. El pastel acabó siendo bautizado con este nombre por su forma y la bonita tonalidad del azúcar caramelizado, que recuerda a un volcán y a su capa de fundida lava. Una vez el pastel se ha cocido, se baña con cualquiera de las distintas opciones de cobertura. Algunos lo prefieren sencillo y con caramelo crujiente, mientras que otros favoritos son el de canela, nueces, vainilla, coco o semillas de sésamo.
Fue el primo de Rafael la primera persona que les presentó el pastel, y la verdad, eso fue amor al primer mordisco. Él mismo fue uno de los primeros en importarlo a América, y hoy día dirige una exitosa franquicia que vende estos pasteles de un extremo a otro de EEUU. Cuando decidieron dar un cambio a sus vidas y carreras, viajaron a los pueblos de Transilvania - de donde es originario este pastel y donde la gente sigue manteniendo la tradición del Pastel Volcano viva - para encontrar auténticas recetas y aprender los tradicionales métodos de preparación y cocción.
Y tras esta historia fascinante que seguramente te ha hecho la boca agua mientras leías (nosotros no pudimos evitar sentir lo mismo cuando nos contaron la historia en persona, y con todo lujo de detalles; imagínate qué poco tardamos en ser clientes número 1), te informamos que a partir de Febrero de este año, Rafael & Vance abren su primera unidad de PASTEL VOLCANO justo en el paseo marítimo de Playa Blanca, enfrente del puerto desde el que sale el ferry. The reinvented cake took the world by storm; from the USA to Australia, through Israel and Thailand, everybody wants to enjoy a piece of this cake...” This is the way we are introduced to this newest, original but at the same time simple, sophisticated in its flavour and aroma, and with no doubt revolutioning product. The reinventors Rafael Bocskai and Vance Richards have decided to bring it to Lanzarote so also you can enjoy its incomparable exquisiteness. The guys - both in their early 30’s - moved to Lanzarote from London in November 2009 to introduce their new product to the island. They joined forces 3 years ago to realise their dreams. The dream was to move to this unique and beautiful island and do something they are both passionate about. That passion is PASTEL VOLCANO. Vance was born in London – his family originates from the Caribbean island of St Lucia - and worked for 9 years in the British National Health System as Medical Simulation Manager. Rafael is of Greek & Austrian origin and was brought up in Budapest, Hungary. After studying Tourism & Hotel Management, he gained experience in the hotel industry, working in many different parts of the world; recently in London for the well-known Intercontinental Hotels Group. But one day, Rafael’s cousin introduced them to the cake. And It was love from the first bite. He was one of the first then to take it to America, today he is running a successful franchise business selling the cakes in the four corners of the United States.

When we decided to make a change of our life and career, we travelled to the villages of Transylvania – where the cake originates from and people kept the tradition of Volcano Cake alive - to find authentic recipes and learn the traditional methods of preparing and baking the cake. The dough comprises of only basic, healthy ingredients and is always freshly mixed and prepared. The dough is cut into strips and then rolled onto bespoke made spindles and cooked on a chargrill or in a specialised oven. The cake gained its name after its shape and the beautiful golden red colour of caramelised sugar that coats the cake like melted lava. Once the cake is baked is then coated in one of our toppings. Some like it plain with the crunchy caramel, while other favourites are cinnamon, hazelnut, vanilla, coconut and sesame seeds. Rafael & Vance found a fantastic location to open their first Pastel Volcano unit, on the Sea Front promenade of Playa Blanca, opposite the Ferry Port. They will be open from 1st February 2010. makeup tips Si quieres causar auténtica sensación cuando salgas de noche, nada mejor que unos buenos pestañones postizos como el 99% de Cher. No necesitas que sea Carnaval para lucir un toque de sofisticación en tus ojos, eso sí, al escoger entre las muchas posibilidades que existen en el mercado, decídete por las que mejor combinen con tu look. De mil colores, más extensas en el rabillo, de plumas, con aplicaciones de falsos cristales, en plan más natural o “hipercantonas”, todas pueden sentar bien siempre y cuando las pegues bien a tu párpado, justo encima de las tuyas propias. En cuanto al precio hablamos de un complemento económico cuyo coste puede rondar entre 1,50€ (como las de las “tiendas de los chinos” que dan el pego pero que muy bien) y los 10€ más o menos las que son más profesionales y con algo más de detalle. Un truco para que ajusten bien a tu ojo es cortar un medio cm aproximadamente por el extremo que va donde el lagrimal. No se verán tan exageradas y tampoco harán tu ojo demasiado cerrado o pequeño. Para pegarlas puedes usar el pegamento que normalmente incluye el producto, pero si te atreves (aunque muy cuidadosamente), puedes usar “mastix”, pegamento profesional que suelen usar los maquilladores profesionales y la gente del artisteo en general. Seguramente te aguantarán toda la noche!!!

If you want to cause sensation when going out at night, nothing beats a good pair of eyelashes, fake as 99% of Cher. To stick them on well you can use the glue that normally is included with the product or if you dare (very carefully tho) and if you want them to last all night long, use “mastix”, professional glue normally used by professional makeup artists and performing artists.

En el 2008 se abrían por primera vez y bajo la atención de los medios de comunicación de todo el mundo, las puertas de un hotel temático dedicado a la banda musical más famosa de todos los tiempos, The Beatles, esos 4 chicos que cantaron al amor y a la paz y que harían que Liverpool fuera recordado para siempre por algo más que su tradición deportiva. Las opciones de alojamiento son varias y tienen distintos precios dependiendo de si quieres una habitación standard, o e puedes permitir un poco más y prefieres una luxury o una Deluxe Room. Las primeras están decoradas con un estilo muy moderno y perfectamente equipadas con las últimas tecnologías, las segundas tienen un diseño exclusivo cada una de ellas e incluyen conexión WI-FI y televisión LCD interactiva y su precio parte del mínimo de 105 Libras, pero si puedes gastar un poco más (alrededor de 25 libras más), quizás vale la pena que dispongas de tu propio balcón en el último piso del edificio desde puedes disfrutar de unas vistas espectaculares de la ciudad. Pero aún más: Quizás las más bonitas suites sean las dedicadas a Sir Paul McCartney, con un artwork muy popero y biográfico en las paredes, o a John Lennon, el más popular de los Beatles, con vistas al centro de la urbe y un piano de cola blanco donde puedes tocar el “Imagine” si te atreves con él. Decorada exquisitamente, es una experiencia icónica que cuesta bastante más comparado con las otras habitaciones (650 Libras), pero incluye una botella de buen champagne francés y desayuno para 2.

De su restaurante “BLAKES”, decir que está incluido en la “Good Food Guide” y en la “Michelin Restaurant Guide” y que ofrece un menú a la carta con cocina local y orgánica propia de cada estación, aunque también puedes optar por su “All You Need Is Blakes Menu”, más económico. Disponen además de una amplísima variedad de vinos, champagnes y todo tipo de bebidas alcohólicas de todo el mundo, lo mismo que también puedes disfrutar en su BAR FOUR, de lo más chic y elitista de la ciudad. Ambos, restaurante y bar, están abiertos tanto para quienes se alojan en el hotel como para los que sólo pasean por la zona y no quieren perderse ver al menos una parte de este bonito y superlujoso hotel temático. Eso sí, conviene ir bien vestido.

But there is more: Maybe the most beautiful suites are those dedicated to the most iconic members of The Beatles: Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon. They are deliciously decorated, the first one with a thematic artwork on the walls that basically tells the life and career of Paul, and the second providing stunning views of the centre of the city and including in its elegant and mainly white decoration, a grand piano that you just expect to start playing automatically the song “Imagine” once you enter the room. La fusión es la clave
La escena musical lanzaroteña tiene mucho que agradecer que estemos en un lugar tan multicultural, con gente de todos los rincones del planeta y en MAIENSY - www.maiensy. com - desde luego han sabido aprovechar eso al máximo. Su vocalista Valentina, es de origen africano (aunque nacida en Gran Canaria), el bajista Christopher es norteamericano, Mohamed Yahya “Bat” es de Mauritania, a cargo de las percusiones está Vicente que viene de Argentina, y para que no se diga que Lanzarote no da sus propios buenos músicos, tenemos a Orlando y a Ángel, a cargo de los teclados y la guitarra respectivamente. Con semejante unión no han conseguido otra cosa que darle darle al sonido de sus canciones un toque quizás más ecléctico todavía que el que cabía esperar en una banda que basa su esencia precisamente en la fusión de estilos, dando como resultado un sonido único y diferenciado que seguramente hará muy pronto las delicias del melómano más exigente. En el 2008 se metieron a tope a grabar su primer disco “Feel my swing” en el estudio lanzaroteño de NÉPTAR Records - www.estudiosneptar.com - y con la subvención de “Canarias, Cultura en Red” que compila 12 temas de puro Funky, Blues y sonido latino, y para el que contaron también con la colaboración de otros grandes músicos de la isla. Ahora ya se encuentra en la calle y esperan poder presentarlo oficialmente tanto a nivel local como regional. Eso hasta que vayan ampliando fronteras, que con el ritmo que llevan y lo bien que lo han hecho con este primer trabajo, seguro que no les va a costar demasiado. En el interior de un antiguo cine en la localidad de Teguise han sido encontrados incontables tesoros de gran valor provenientes de China. Entre los muchos objetos, figuran jarrones de la distanía Ming y Ching, tapices, muebles, estatuas, relojes y todo tipo de complementos para el hogar, en su mayoría antigüedades que si no fuese por este curioso hallazgo que ha despertado la curiosidad de residentes y turistas, no se hubieran encontrado aquí en Lanzarote.
There have been found in the interior of an old theatre in the village of Teguise, valuable treasures from China. Among the many objects, we can find vases from the Ming & Ching dynasties, tapestries, furniture, statues, clocks and all kind of decorative complements, most of them antiquities that would have never been found here in Lanzarote if it wasn’t for this curious discovery which has awaken the interest of both residents and tourists.

ES GENTE! IT´s PEOPLE ! Basada en la novela “Make Room! Make Room!” (algo así como “Haced espacio, haced espacio!”) que escribió Harry Harrison en 1966, se rodó en plena crisis del petroleo, con precios de escándalo en todo lo que significase el sustento diario, la reciente salida de la guerra del Vietnam con el consecuente sentimiento de primera gran derrota internacional de los EEUU (y muchas víctimas de ambos bandos claro, como en toda guerra estúpida del hombre), y los emergentes problemas ecológicos por la depredación humana causando ya estragos sobre el planeta. Y quizás su intención fuera más allá de la de convertirse en un clásico de la ciencia-ficción. “Soylent Green” refleja perfectamente el sentimiento de frustración que vivían muchos en aquel momento, un sentimiento de desesperada tristeza que transmite la mirada del protagonista, interpretrado magistralmente por Charlton Heston. Valiente reivindicación ecologista, critica duramente un sistema que estaba volviéndose cada vez más insosenible a pasos gigantescos...Hasta nuestros días, en los que nos amenazan cambios drásticos en lo que creemos que es el mundo hoy por hoy. Por que ciertamente sabemos menos de lo que pensamos y tal vez un futuro (por fatalista que os parezca) muy similar al de esta película, no esté tan lejos después de todo.

Make Room!” written by Harry Harrison in 1966, it was filmed during the oil crisis, with its scandalous prices for the daily sustenance, after the recent Vietnam war and with the resulting feeling of America’s first international defeat (and of course with many victims for both sides, as usual in any stupid war caused by mankind), and the emerging ecological problems created through the human predators devastating the planet. .And maybe the intention of this film was to go further than becoming just a classic science-fiction. “Soylent Green” perfectly reflects the feeling of frustration that many people had in those times, a feeling of desperated sadness transmitted through the eyes of its main character, brilliantly played by Charlton Heston. As a brave ecological manifesto, it strongly criticizes a system which is becoming more and more unsustainable everyday. Until nowadays, when we feel threatened by drastic changes in what we believe is the world at this moment in time. We certaintly know less than what we think and maybe a future (no matter how fatalistic it seems to be) very similar to the one that it’s shown in this movie, it’s not that far away after all.

Charlton Heston performs a total masterpiece in “Soylent Green”. He who was the president of the National Rifle Association, has given voice to a film that has left a clear message to the new generations: There’s no future. Will we react one day?
2022... Un futuro absolutamente creíble NEW YORK, año 2022. América vive un auténtico colapso económico y social (¡qué familar!). La superpoblación llega a los 40.000.000 personas, que viven mayormente en condiciones infrahumanas, vagabundeando por las calles y sin empleo. Usan uniforme y si osan romper el orden, son apartados con una excavadora, tratados peor que el ganado. El agua, la fruta, la leche o la carne son imposibles de encontrar, y se consideran artículos de lujo, así que la única comida barata, rápida y mínimamente nutritiva a la que se tiene acceso es SOYLENT GREEN, un compuesto de algas marinas y plancton “altamente energético” que se presenta en raciones individuales. La polución es una inmensa nube asfixiante sobre la ciudad, que ha causado que la temperatura y la humedad suban de forma alarmante. Sólo los ricos (como siempre) siguen disfrutando en sus fortalezas privadas, aprovechando los últimos vestigios del siglo XX. La clase media ha desaparecido (algo previsible dentro de unos años en nuestra sociedad también), y los ricos usan a bellas mujeres (prostitutas) como mobiliario fetiche. En definitiva, un mundo cruel, radical y bajo un gobierno totalitario y esclavizador que no os riáis, no parece quedar tan lejos al paso que vamos. Quizás lo único esperanzador en el film sea la eutanasia asistida. Una muerte a la carta que te permite dejar este mundo plácidamente mientras observas bellas imágenes de la naturaleza (si es lo que deseas) en una pantalla. El policía Thorn (Charlton Heston) tendrá que investigar el asesinato de un alto cargo de la empresa Soylent Green, junto a su asistente Sol (Edward G. Robinson que moriría al poco de terminar el rodaje), alguien mayor que le contará las bondades de un mundo pasado que él jamás verá. Lo que llegarán a descubrir es demasiado atroz para creerlo. Pero es cierto, y hay que alertar al mundo. No os contamos en detalle por lo de siempre. Conviene que veáis la película YA.

2022... An absolutely credible future NEW YORK, year 2022. America is experiencing a total financial and social collapse (sounds familiar!). The population has grown to 40.000.000 people, who are living in a great majority as homeless wandering the streets and unemployed. They use uniforms and if they dare to break the order, they would inmediately be taken aside using a bulldoze, they are treated worst than the cattle would be. Water, fruit, milk or meat are luxury items impossible to find, so the only cheap, fast and minimally nutritive food the people have access to is SOYLENT GREEN, small wafers produced from “high-energy plankton” and presented in individual portions. The pollution is an enormous and asphyxiating cloud over the city that has caused the temperature and humidity to raise alarmingly. Only the rich (as usual) continue enjoying their lives in their private fortresses, taking advantage of the XX century last vestiges. The middle-class has disappeared (something predictable for our society in some years as well), and the rich use beautiful women (prostitutes) as a kind of fetish furniture. In short, this is a cruel world, radical and under a totalitarian and enslavery based government which, don’t laugh folks, is not so far away if you are able to see the big picture and the direction we are taking. Maybe the only thing we can still contemplate with some hope in this film is the assisted euthanasia. You can die “a la carte” and leave this world peacefully whilst you watch nice images of wild nature (if this is what you want) on a big screen. The police Thorn (Charlton Heston) will have to investigate the assassination of a high ranking member of Soylent Green’s company, together with his friend Sol (Edward G. Robinson who died a short time after the film was shot), who is older and tells him how good and different the world was in the past, a world Thorn will never see. What they are about to discover is simply too atrocious to believe. But it’s true, and the world needs to know. We won’t tell you more details for the same reason we never do. Our advise is that you watch this movie NOW.

No pueden estar casados ni tener ningún tipo de atadura a la hora de realizar este viaje, que aparte de darles una mayor experiencia en sus oficios hasta llegar a convertirse en maestros, les ha de servir como lección de vida. We come across by 4 “Gesellen” (skilled workers) here, on the island who have recently arrived from Germany and who are following an ancient tradition which has its origins in this country and late in the Middle Ages. They travel the world during three years, offering their knowledge and skills in several trades which they really experts in, such as carpentry, painting or bricklaying and all what they want in exchange is shelter and food. Neither of them can be married nor to have any kind of tie that could not allow them to realize this journey, which apart from giving them more experience in their trades until they become masters, will be also a lesson of life. A fascinating story, authentic and beautiful.
