From the President

Dear Mount Saint Charles family, 2017-18 saw a lot of changes at Mount Saint Charles. You’re holding one of them right now – our reboot of MOUNT magazine. Mount Legacy magazine will keep you up to date on the latest happenings at the school the way its predecessor did. But it will also be a regular and joyful reminder of our history and that of our founders, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. History enriches the present, and we have plenty of it. You’ll read how we’ve renewed traditions like First Friday Masses. How we’ve turned our history into art with a new mural in the main entrance. How we honored the service and sacrifice of Mount alumni who have served in the military. How a new generation of students brought back the Hilltopper newspaper, which chronicled life at Mount for decades. We also catch you up with Mount students who past and present who are serving in their communities in the mold of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. We visit with a former principal and teacher, Brother Clifford King, whose devotion to service took him from Mount after 36 years to a new ministry in Louisiana. The present and future are very much a part of Mount Legacy. You’ll also see improvements we’re making to extend our legacy to a new generation. We’re adding facilities – outdoor eating areas and a library cafe – to make us more attractive to prospective students. The new Capstone Advanced Placement program and a school counseling office strengthen our academic offerings. Athletics are growing with the addition of two Mount alumni (and former NHL stars) in the hockey program, a new equestrian team, and a figure skating program. These changes at Mount comes in the face of challenges we and schools like us all over the country are facing. Renewal, a central theme of our Catholic faith, is very much in the air. We’re moving ahead to ensure we continue offering an outstanding college preparatory program grounded in Catholic values and a dedication to service. It’s our history and our future. Sincerely, Alan Tenreiro ‘92 President

A Legacy of Catholic Education: Mount Saint Charles’ history came out of the books and went onto the walls in 2018. Walking through the main entrance now is to be surrounded by a full-color mural depicting major events in our history, including the school’s founding and that of its founding order of Catholic brothers, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, in 1821. The mural is a celebration of the brothers’ service and the traditions of Catholic education. It takes viewers through Father Andre Coindre’s chance meeting with two freezing, starving girls that moved him to establish the brotherhood in 1821 “to rescue young people from ignorance, to prepare them for life, and to give them knowledge and love of religion.” It also depicts the founding of Mount Saint Charles’ predecessor school, its conversion to a coeducational institution, and construction of the chapel, gymnasium and hockey arena. Planning to visit the Mount soon? Take a walk through history by pausing at the mural. 4 | The Legacy: Summer 2018

Legacies: Past & Present Reviving an old tradition

Feast of the Sacred Heart The Feast of the Sacred Heart falls around graduation season every year. This year it occurred on June 8, as we welcomed the Class of 1968 back for their 50th graduation anniversary. Honoring Jesus’ divine love for humanity, the feast is a significant event for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart that celebrates their commitment to service in his example. The brothers observed the day with a Mass, prayer and a social at a retirement home in Pascoag. Mount also held a reception in our historic reception room with the Brothers and student and school leaders. The feast was incorporated into Mount’s graduation liturgy. A Sacred Heart Mass was celebrated, accompanied by red vestments and table linens.

Legacies: Past & Present Reviving an old legacy

The Hilltopper Student Newspaper For generations, the student newspaper chronicled academics, sports, social events and more. It was relaunched this year as a website co-edited by students Ava Sangiovanni, ’20, and Emma Picard, ’19. It features sections devoted to school news, education around the world, alumni, and happenings outside the school. A blog and a writers corner invite personal contributions, such as the haunting tribute to the victims of the Parkland, Florida school shooting by Editor Ava Sangiovanni and a musing on teens and technology by Maggie Kinnear, ’19.

The presses are rolling again on the Mount: The Hilltopper is back.

6 | The Legacy: Summer 2018

In her article about The Hilltopper’s return, writer Lucy Baxter, ’18, declares: “It’s time this amazing school had a newspaper to highlight all of the good that happens here. We’re glad to be back.”

8th-grade completion ceremony

We commemorated the first class of eighth graders to be with us for all three middle school years—grades 6-8—with a Middle School Completion Ceremony on June 11. This class started a new legacy of middle school education at Mount Saint Charles when they joined us as sixth graders in 2016. With the Completion Ceremony, we congratulated them on finishing middle school and offered our hopes to see them graduate as high school students in four years.

2018 Commencement Class of 2018

Mount’s 94th graduation The values the Mount Saint Charles Academy Class of 2018 graduates have learned during their time at the school will continue to be embedded in their lives, well beyond the MSC campus. President Alan Tenreiro told the 130 graduates at the commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 10, that the school motto, “Excelsior,” is the Latin term for “ever upward.” He told the crowd that gathered in the school’s gym for the ceremony the motto is about excellence, born from high expectations. “Those high expectations are our wishes for your success,” he said. Beyond that, Tenreiro told the graduates, “I want to wish you greatness. You already have it inside you. You just have to let it out by doing something else you’ve learned at Mount Saint Charles: How to give. Giving unlocks your greatness. When you use your talents, your time and your treasures to help those who live in the shadows of life cast by poverty, or illness, or violence, or ignorance, you become the living image of God’s love.” Rachel Breitenbach, who served as mistress of ceremonies, told fellow graduates, “Mount has truly become a second home. It is a place where we are

Mount Saint Charles turns 95 next year and also welcomes a new legacy. Sixth graders who come to Mount in the fall of 2018 and stay through high school will be the class of 2025—our 100th graduating class. Next year, when the class of 1969 comes back to celebrate 50 years since their graduation, those sixth graders will be finishing up their first year and continuing on to write a new page in our history.

Salutatorian Matthew Melnychuk spoke of how closeknit the MSC community is, and told the crowd at graduation that regardless of what changes in the graduates’ lives, “Everything we’ve experienced these past four years is embedded in our hearts.”

“The challenge is to create your own mold, to shape yourself, to create the world you want to see. My fellow graduates of the Class of 2018, today we are making a first step towards our transition to the adult world ... We can take the easy route and follow the path, or we can create our own path as we change the world,” she said.

Faith in Action Klagetoh, Arizona - St. Anne’s Mission

Community Service Trip

Mount Saint Charles Academy juniors and seniors joined members of the faculty on a service trip to St. Anne’s Mission, a Brother’s of the Sacred Heart Mission in Klagetoh, Arizona. The mission is located on the Navajo Reservation and Br. Charles Schilling is the director. The students performed various acts of service on the reservation, including: building an outhouse, constructing a handicapped-accessible ramp, sanding and skim-coating the inside of a house, scraping paint from the outside of a house, building a deck, fixing a sheep corral, and creating a wall and rock garden. In addition, the students and faculty had the opportunity to work closely with and develop relationships with the local Navajo people. Canyon de Chelly, located on the Navajo reservation, gave the students an opportunity to “take a hike” down the 2.5-mile canyon and witness breathtaking scenery. Most notably, the trip provided the chance to be immersed in the mission and charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and Mount Saint Charles Academy.

Florida Coast - Blowing Rocks Preserve

Environmental Service Trip In its 16th year, the Mount Saint Charles Academy’s service trip to Florida continues to promote good citizenship, teamwork, leadership skills and environmentalism, school officials say. Richard Lawrence, director of athletics and English teacher at Mount who runs the week-long community service trip, said senior students partner with The Nature Conservancy, the Florida State Parks, AmeriCorps and the Boys Scouts of America while cleaning up the largest known nesting area for sea turtles in the world at the Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island and visiting spots nearby. At Mount, Lawrence said, “One of our trademarks is dedication to promoting service among our students, so that when they leave our school, they have a sense that they need to give back.” During the trip, students cleared thousands of invasive plant species, cleaned up litter and debris at beaches, planted native crops, participated in environmental lectures, visited a “turtle hospital” where rehabilitation is offered for injured turtles and were taken on a trip to coral reefs where a geologist pointed out what helps keep these areas and ecosystems healthy.

Throughout the trip, held at the end of February, Lawrence said wherever the group of students went, “people praised the kids for their work and for their diligence and willingness to make a difference.” The group of 12 seniors also hiked through sand dunes, sat around campfires in the evenings, went on a canoe trip to the Loxahatchee River at a Boy Scout reservation, participated in a talent show and saw wildlife including manatees and alligators during their stay in the sunshine state. “The mission of the school is to educate the entire person, not just to fill them with facts and figures, and I’m certainly committed to that and I think the service project contributes to that,” Lawrence said. He said of the students, “These are the leaders of tomorrow, and I think a trip and experience like this promotes that.” The Legacy: Summer 2018 | 13

Chapel Hall opened to a gathering of more than 70 people on the morning of March 9, 2018 for the first annual Mount Saint Charles Interfaith Prayer Breakfast. Leaders of all faiths were invited to the public forum, along with local businesses, groups and elected officials, to explore questions of spirituality. The guest speaker was Rev. Robert Lacombe, priest for 27 years in the Diocese of Providence who serves

The breakfast was among many "Faith in Action" activities this year that focused on service and giving. Revisiting our core values is essential to maintaining an active faith that moves us to serve our community and the larger world. Asking questions, such as how faith demands we respond to the poor and vulnerable in our community, helps ensure that our faith leads us to meaningful action. We’re looking forward to hosting similar community events in the future.

Alumni Faith in Action: David Emond On his final day as CEO of a New Orleans community organization, David Emond could have reflected on the many lives he touched. Instead, he thought of how those lives touched his. “They taught me to appreciate what I have and to never to take my privilege for granted. They filled me with hope for the future,” said the 1992 Mount Saint Charles graduate. Emond, 44, Pawtucket native and son of Denise and Pete Emond, dedicated his life to service in 2008 after leading a student group to New Orleans. Moved by the devastation from Hurricane Katrina, Emond left his teaching job and settled in New Orleans to rebuild 14 | The Legacy: Summer 2018

houses with the Saint Bernard Project. He then worked for nine years at Cafe Reconcile and Liberty’s Kitchen, nonprofits serving a 98 percent African American youth population facing huge obstacles to success. “They’re incredibly resilient, hard working, smart and entrepreneurial,” Emond said. Our goal was to get them to look in the mirror, see their own value, and acknowledge their dignity. Once they can do that, we know the sky is the limit for them.” In 2017, Emond received the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation’s Archie Casbarian Humanitarian Award. He recently left Liberty’s Kitchen after 4.5 years, and though he’s undecided where to go next, he knows what he’ll be doing. “I’m definitely staying in community service. Investing in people pays back many times over. Not just for them, but for all of us,” Emond said.

Making an Impact: Christmas Basket Deliveries brighter for families across Rhode Island. Mount volunteers made and delivered baskets of food and toys for 31 Woonsocket families through a seasonal giving program coordinated by the Community Care Alliance, which also involved the Providence Journal Holiday Fund and the New England Patriots Foundation. Mount campus ministers Riley Mulligan, ‘18, Meghan Jarret, ’18, Reagan Mulligan, ’17, Lucy Baxter, ’18, and Shannon Stillwell, ’18, led the effort, along with Director of Campus Ministry Deacon Anthony Gagliani.

The Mount Saint Charles community teamed up with 12 other churches, schools and community groups to help make the 2017 Christmas season

“The event gave the students an opportunity to pause and reflect upon the blessings they have been given as they shared the basic blessings of food and gifts with families in our community who were in need.”

Lenten Mission Drive supports sister school in Africa This year’s annual Lenten fundraiser collected more than $5,000 for Mount Saint Charles’ sister school in Zambia. Much of the money raised was used to purchase egg-laying chickens. The eggs will provide Robert W. Shitima School students and their families with a reliable source of protein in their diets. Previous student-led Lenten campaigns have funded an irrigation system, science labs, and replaced belongings lost to a dormitory fire. The Shitima school teaches academics and vocational skills to help children out of poverty. Students raised money through activities such as

cake pop sales and a dodgeball tournament, while some teachers held candy sales. By serving people they will probably never meet, said Campus Ministry Director Deacon Anthony Gagliani, Mount students are learning to follow Jesus’ example of embracing everyone as a neighbor worthy of their help and love. “Lent is an important time to look outside ourselves and recognize the needs of those around us,” he said. “When we respond to people in need, we respond directly to Christ when he asked ‘who is my neighbor?’ Through the annual Mission Drive, Mounties come to recognize that our neighbor is anyone who needs our help.”

“Love thy neigbor.”

Coming to the aid of Marian High School

In the spirit of being a good neighbor and supporting the Catholic education community, Mount is ensuring that Marian students can complete their high school careers with a sense of normalcy. Mount firmly believes that a high-quality, affordable Catholic education is the key to success and we are committed to helping Marian students achieve their high school completion and college search goals. Brothers of the Sacred Heart

Former Mount Principal named ‘Superior General’ in Rome Former Mount Saint Charles Principal Brother Mark Hilton has been elected superior general of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, accepting responsibility for more than 1,000 brothers educating the young in 32 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America. Brother Mark served as principal of Mount Saint Charles from 1998 until 2002, when he became president of Bishop Guertin High School in Manchester, New Hampshire. Prior to Mount Saint Charles, he was principal of Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Australia and St. Dominic High School in Lewiston, Maine. Brother Mark was elected superior general in May 2018 at the General Chapter meeting of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Rome. The superior general is the canonical leader of all of the Brothers in the institute worldwide, and is selected by an international slate of delegates every six years. His new position took Brother Mark to the General House in Rome, where he will work with an international council of assistants. He will also be a member of a papal conclave of the heads of all Catholic religious orders. Before his election as superior general, Brother Mark was the first provincial (leader) of the newly created U.S. Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Mount Saint Charles Principal Ed Burke was a teacher when Brother Mark was principal at the Mount. Mr. Burke remembers a man who listened well, was frank and open, and always said yes if asked to take on a new challenge. “Brother Mark is a man of power faith who really gives witness and example of discipleship by going where he is called to lead,” he said. “It speaks to his character and to his own vocation as a Brother of the Sacred Heart that he is always seeking to be of service.” It’s a great honor for Mount Saint Charles to be associated with the leader of the order that founded our school. Our congratulations to Brother Mark, and hopes and prayers for much success in his new position.

A new tradition

First Friday Masses A tradition long associated with the Brothers of the Sacred Heart returned to Mount Saint Charles in 2017 when First Friday Masses were again held in the chapel. Starting in September, Father Richard Desaulniers celebrated the Masses at 7:15 a.m. for students, faculty, and families. After Mass, the chapel remains open though the rest of the day, with the sacraments on the altar and low music playing, to provide a quiet space for prayer and contemplation, said Campus Ministry Director Deacon Anthony Gagliani. The First Friday Masses are a devotion in the Catholic tradition of fasting, abstinence, and penance. It became a tradition for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart to celebrate them, and the tradition was carried over from France in the 1700s to Mount Saint Charles in the 2000s.

A love that inspires service

Father Coindre’s Sermon Father Andre Coindre was so moved by the plight of poor children in post-revolutionary France that he became a living example of faith in action by founding the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and dedicating the order to serving the poorest and most desperate. Love that inspires service was a recurring topic in Father Coindre’s sermons. One of his most inspirational is a deep meditation on God’s love and how it reaches through each of us. This was among the most poignant passages: Never, ever doubt the love in the heart of God for you Could he have put into the heart of your father, Or into the heart of your friends who love you dearly, A feeling that he did not first have in his own heart? Could the tender heart of your mother have showered on you Such love and caring all day and all night During your infancy without God first giving her The energy of his restless love? He is a father whose heart is a roaring hearth, an intense fire. He is a father whose love makes the most loving and dedicated persons you might know or imagine seem like nothing more than the faintest spark. Admit his love, proclaim it.

Brother Clifford King

Serving God in Louisiana Brother Clifford answered a call in 2017 to teach religious studies at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, ending 36 years as a teacher and principal at Mount Saint Charles. After a year in his new home, Brother Clifford looks back on his time at Mount with appreciation for the ties he forged with two generations of students and families. The school’s size and “teacher-counselor” structure, which pairs teachers with a group of students for all four years, offered a unique opportunity for connection that Brother Clifford still cherishes. “I miss the sense of community I was able to build with the kids and their families,” he said. “I taught children of former students, and I was starting to get the grandchildren. I still talk every month to a young woman I taught in 1978.” One of Brother Clifford’s Mount connections surfaced on a recent visit back to Rhode Island, when he went to the airport baggage office to find a suitcase. “The other gentleman waiting for his bag was a former student of mine,” he said. In addition to teaching, Brother Clifford is taking a group of students to work at a summer camp in Mississippi this summer; leading Bible study at a local homeless shelter with his fellow Brothers of the Sacred Heart; and working with young men interested in being brothers. It’s his way of continuing to live the message of Jesus, “who did not come to be served, but to serve,” he said. The Legacy: Summer 2018 | 17

The more time children spend gaming, watching videos and on social media, the more parents hear about the harm of being glued to a screen an average of 6.5 hours per day. The panel responded to parents’ questions about limiting screen time and the right way to their kids about managing their online lives. They stressed consistency and praised the parent-child negotiations depicted in “Screenagers” as the right way to find balance. The forum itself was an example of a broad-based approach that one expert in “Screenagers” said is essential to managing digital media’s onslaught. “We have to think about everywhere kids are in the real world, and how we can educate them in those spaces,” author Peggy Ornstein said in the movie. “We can’t just say ‘it’s on the schools’ or ‘it’s on the parents.’ We have to do this as a community.” The Legacy: Summer 2018 | 19

Veterans White Table Ceremony

Honoring those who served The table at the center of Veterans Hall was set with six places, but no one sat at them. They remained vacant throughout the Veterans White Table Ceremony held on November 7, 2017, paying tribute to Mount Saint Charles alumni who served in the military and did not return home to their families and community. The event, attended by students, parents, and more than 30 military alumni, honored all Mount Saint Charles men and women who served in the armed forces. But the first part of the day belonged to the fallen and missing in action. Students explained the symbolism of the items on the table—such as a single red rose representing blood shed in sacrifice, and the white tablecloth representing purity of intention to answer the call to arms. Five of the six places at the table represent the five branches of the military—Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard—and the sixth represents civilians. After the ceremony, alumni gathered in the reception room for a luncheon and to share their experiences. “It’s important to remind the students how many sacrifices have been made to provide them a free society and the opportunities they have today. None of those sacrifices are greater than those made by the men and women who have defended our country,” said Mount Saint Charles President Alan Tenreiro, ‘92.

Campus News

NEW AP Capstone Program Mount Saint Charles Academy adopted the College Board’s advanced Capstone Program this year to teach critical thinking, planning, problem-solving and communication skills essential for success in higher education. Used by top schools all over the country, the AP (Advanced Placement) Capstone program consists of two advanced placement courses – AP Seminar and AP Research – typically taken in grades 11 or 12. The Capstone courses emphasize skills that

higher education faculty and admission officers have identified as essential for college-bound students. Capstone adds to an already extensive array of AP courses offered at the Mount, including AP English, English literature, calculus, biology, chemistry, environmental science, Spanish, music theory, European history, American government, psychology, government and politics. Together, they offer Mount students outstanding preparation for the demands of college study.

NEW School Counseling Office The name has changed from “guidance office” to “school counseling office,” yet the office still does a lot of guiding, with college applications, PSAT, SAT and ACT testing, course selection and academic support. So what does the new name mean?

“We are able to provide direct support to teachers, coordinate meetings with parents, find resources and share information,” she said. “We want students and parents to understand all the services available to them through the school counseling office.”

It means accessibility to all students in order to provide a multitude of academic, college and career, and social/ emotional supports.

In 2017-18, Mount’s counselors – Vivian Ferry, Nicole Burke and Mrs. Tenreiro – spent time in middle school classrooms delivering lessons on topics like time management, conflict resolution and digital citizenship. A proactive approach that empowers students to problem solve potential challenges. Counselors can also be found facilitating parent workshops, holding student assemblies, hosting college visits, coordinating testing, organizing recognition and career events and engaging in professional development. And it doesn’t end there, this new team is on the go and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Mount Saint Charles is following the national trend to move away from the guidance model to the school counselor model. The latter focuses on making counselors a more active and visible part of the school community. It puts a stronger emphasis on proactively teaching students skills to help them navigate challenges. It includes partnerships with parents and teachers. This new counseling model embraces technology like survey data and Mount’s Naviance college and career information system, to move valuable information and decision-making closer to the students, making it easily accessible and useful in moving students forward. The guidance-to-counseling name change may be subtle, said Director of School Counseling Lisa Tenreiro, but important for ensuring that Mount Saint Charles provides the type and level of support that today’s students need. 22 | The Legacy: Summer 2018

“We are accessible to all students, and encourage them to come to us for any reason at any time,” Mrs. Tenreiro said. “Our department, including our incredible clerk Cathy Certo, wants to be part of their academic and personal development. The counseling office isn’t just a place where a student goes when something is going wrong. We are also the center of support for students when things are going well! We want to celebrate their accomplishments, learn about their talents and listen to their goals.”

Two retirements this year Mike Masterson, 40 years

Stephen Shea, 44 years

Michael Masterson came to Mount as a senior in 1971 and helped the basketball and baseball teams make the playoffs. After college, he returned to teach and coach for 40 years. Mr. Masterson, who taught physical education and coached baseball, basketball and golf, announced his retirement this year. His teams won 10 Northern Division championships and he notched his 300th victory as golf coach in 2018. He plans to kick off his retirement golfing in Scotland. “I’ll miss working with the kids. They kept me young,” he said. “I’m thankful to the brothers and principals who gave me an opportunity to be part of the community for so long.”

After 44 years, hundreds of hockey games and stage productions, and one outdoor skating rink, English teacher Stephen Shea is leaving Mount in 2018. Mr. Shea came to Mount in 1974 after graduating from Brown University, where he played on the hockey team. His children – Brendan, ’06; Courtney, ’09; and twins Allison and Caitlin, ’12 – were all Mount hockey captains. Mr. Shea was the catalyst behind Mount’s new outdoor skating rink, and also produced the annual faculty talent show. He plans to stay active at Mount as a substitute teacher, writing tutor, and volunteer. The Legacy: Summer 2018 | 25

Sur La Glacé Program

MSC creates first-of-its-kind program for training and educating figure skaters education requirements. That, and eliminating travel between school and training, gives skaters time for music, arts, clubs and other extracurricular pursuits.

Mount Saint Charles Academy is launching an innovative new program for young figure skaters that cuts their training costs, eliminates daily travel, and creates time for extracurricular activities. “Sur La Glacé” is the first and only figure skating program of its kind in Rhode Island. It enables skaters in grades 6-12 to attend classes at Mount Saint Charles and train at its adjacent Adelard Arena for two-to-three hours during the school day. They can supplement their on-ice training with dance training in the school’s studio, strength training in the weight room, and on-site nutritional support. Training during school time satisfies skaters physical

“Skaters usually don’t have the time to be part of their schools because they’re always rushing back and forth to the rink,” said Sarah Mirza DiNardo, who leads Mount Saint Charles’ on-site coaching staff. Ms. DiNardo is a former competitive skater and U.S. Figure Skating quadruple gold medalist in freestyle, moves in the field, ice dancing, and free dance. She is also a former elementary school teacher, having taught for over ten years. “We’re providing everything they need in one place,” she said. “They can train at the highest level, get an outstanding education, and have the time just to be kids. Their coaches can come to the rink and work with them during the day, so after school they can participate in other activities and get their homework done.” Sur La Glacé students pay a fee of $2,500 in addition to regular Mount Saint Charles tuition. Those costs combined are less than skaters can pay for ice time alone in a typical year.

2017 Teacher & Baseball Coach of the year: Tom Seaver Former Mount baseball coach Tom Seaver, a three-time state champion with 325 career wins, was named to the Rhode Island Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2017. Mr. Seaver, who stepped down in 2016, coached at Mount for 31 years, 24 as head coach. 26 | The Legacy: Summer 2018

His teams won the Division II championship in 2009, ’10 and ’15, and made 14 more playoff appearances. A graduate of Providence College, Mr. Seaver excelled in football before baseball became his passion. He came to Mount in 1982 as junior varsity coach and got the varsity job a few years later. Mr. Seaver is a teacher in Mount’s history department.

New Equestrian program MSC Partners with Prospect Hill Farm to offer a varsity riding team starting fall 2018 Mount Saint Charles students will train, learn, compete and earn varsity letters through the new riding team, which will be coached by Prospect Hill owner Alicia Cugini. The team is open to riders of all abilities – even novices with little or no experience on horseback – and students don’t have to own a horse to participate. Riders will compete in Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) events at the regional, zone, and national levels. “We’ll take every student who wants to ride. We’ll do tryouts just to determine what level they ride at, but we’ll take anyone who’s interested,” Cugini said. “They may not show in competitions until they reach the right ability level, but they can still compete through the written tests in the horsemanship part of the competitions.” IEA events include individual and team competitions. Although riding is often perceived as an individual sport, Cugini said the program will stress team dynamics.

team-oriented program. I really believe in the team spirit, and we’re going to have team dinners, practices apparel... anything you’d expect from any other high school team,” she said. Her priorities echo those of Mount Saint Charles President Alan Tenreiro, who developed the idea for the team when he noticed how many students were interested in horseback riding. “A lot of the kids were already riding on their own. We want to give them a chance to get together as a team and earn the same kind of recognition athletes in other sports do,” he said. The Mount Saint Charles team will be one of only two high school equestrian teams in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Students will train for two hours twice a week with Cugini at Prospect Hill. The school will pay for IEA membership and regular season show fees. Students are responsible for training fees and personal equipment like helmets.

New Hockey Program

NHL Alumni return to MSC

Former NHL stars take new hockey development posts at Mount Two former NHL players and Mount Saint Charles Academy graduates have accepted new posts created to expand the school’s hockey program through broader player development programs and long-range strategic planning. Bryan Berard (’94) and Brian Boucher (’96) have signed on as director of player development and strategic advisor for hockey operations, respectively. They were announced at the Mount Saint Charles Hockey Legacy event on March 7 where their coach, Bill Belisle, was honored with a plaque for his 43-year career at the school. Boucher will work on long-range planning issues such as facilities improvement with the hockey steering committee and Mount Saint Charles President Alan 28 | The Legacy: Summer 2018

Tenreiro. Berard will serve as director of player development, working with the boys and girls middle school, junior varsity and varsity teams. He will run hockey camps at Mount Saint Charles, and will team up with Boucher to create a new specialized camp for goalies and defensemen. Berard, a first overall draft pick in the NHL, played defenseman, winning the Calder and Masterson Trophies during an 11-year career. Boucher was a goaltender who spent most of his 13-year career with the Philadelphia Flyers. He holds the modern-day NHL record for the longest shutout streak by a goalie, going unscored upon for 332 minutes, or 5 and a half games. Berard and Boucher both played for Belisle, and were among the 180-plus people at the Legacy event. Belisle, a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, has notched more than 1,000 victories and 32 state championships at Mount Saint Charles, sent almost 40 players to Division 1 hockey programs, and 20 to the NHL. “We’ve been incredibly lucky to have Bill Belisle build a tradition of success here for more than four decades ... Now, two of his most successful players will extend Bill’s legacy and help us continue to attract top studentathletes who dream of playing in college and the pros,” Tenreiro said.

2018 Athletic Hall of Fame Twelve new names are joining the Mount Saint Charles Academy Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018, adding another chapter to the school’s rich 94-year legacy of athletic excellence. “These inductees represent everything that’s great about Mount Saint Charles sports. We’re looking forward to honoring their contributions to the school - both on and off the field - at the induction ceremonies in May,” said Mount Saint Charles Director of Athletics Richard Lawrence.

Outstanding Athlete Awards

The Hall of Fame Class of 2018 represents a wide swath of the sports Mount Saint Charles competes in: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, hockey, lacrosse, tennis, soccer, softball and track. Several of the inductees were two-sport athletes, and six - John Burns, Robert Cote, Matthew Jarret, Ashley Jensen, Kelly Ryan and Maria Saia - were three-sport athletes. The athletic department also presented its Spirit of Sport award to Jeannine and Maurice Morin for embodying sportsmanship. “Athletics have always said a lot about the values we teach at Mount Saint Charles, which go way beyond scoreboards and won-loss records,” said Mount Saint Charles President Alan Tenreiro. “Competing and winning is important, but dedication, hard work, sacrifice, team spirit and sportsmanship are qualities young athletes will carry through their lives. Sports teach us about setting goals, discipline, working together and overcoming adversity. Those are enduring values, and this group of outstanding individuals represent the best that sports can do to develop a complete person,” Tenreiro said.

Annual Report “Once a Mountie, always a Mountie”

The President’s Pledge Dear friends of Mount, As a Mount alumni and as a parent of a Mountie, this school holds a special place in my heart and I’m sure it does in yours as well. Simply put, I love the campus. I love the traditions. I love the success stories of our sports teams and the success stories of our graduates. I love the charism and dedication of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. I love the camaraderie of our alumni, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the ambitions and dreams of our students. I love this school. It helped shape and mold me into the person I am today and I want to make sure this school has the same positive impact on each and every student in our school. It’s why I came home to Mount. After all, once a Mountie, always a Mountie. But when I came home to Mount this past July, I found many hurdles in front of me - an outdated curriculum that didn’t meet today’s educational standards, a lack of investment in technology and tools needed to inspire and challenge our students, little to no investment in athletic infrastructure, and a lack of connections to our alumni and to colleges and universities.

Those who have donated to the President’s Pledge include: To donate to this fund, visit mountsaintcharles.org/prespledge or call our Office of Admissions at 401-769-0310 Ext. 177

We quickly made administrative and staff changes that needed to be made in the best interest of student learning, we are overhauling our middle school program, we’ve reinvented our administrative offices to make them more student-centered, and we have adopted a strategic plan that sets forth a bold new vision for our school’s future. Make no mistake, our plan for the next three to five years is most definitely a bold one: We are committed to making Mount Saint Charles Academy the best school in the Northeast. To make this vision a reality, we need your help. I need your help. So I am asking you to give back to the school that has given us so much. I am asking you to support future generations of Mounties and current Mounties, setting the expectation that when they graduate and become successful like you, that they too pay it back, and give back to their alma mater. I am personally donating $5,000 to the Mount Fund. On behalf of our entire Mount family, I call upon all fellow Mounties near and far to show their support for our school by participating in this year’s annual fund.
