Dear Alumni and Friends,

W

hat a great pleasure it is for me to once again offer you the greetings of the Academy. It is always good to be able to share with you a glimpse of what is happening here in our school and to share news of some of our alumni, all of whom, through their lives and careers, continue to make Mount’s mission statement come alive as they use their talents and intellects to serve others. This issue of MOUNT focuses on the theme of transformation. Ultimately, that is what a Mount experience is all about – education, growth, formation, and transformation. Both the school’s philosophy statement and the educational charism statement of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of the United States are filled with words and phrases that emphasize this idea: “the growth and formation of students in every aspect of their being;” “the development of young people as creative and responsible members of society;” “help students respond to God’s call;” “the formation of an informed and critical conscience;” “summons the student to action;” “promote the development of the whole person;” “to form friendships;” “develop physically and athletically;” “our primary mission is the evangelization of young people.” The center of our work is education, and the word education itself means “to develop mentally, morally, or aesthetically by instruction.” Education is not merely the acquisition of information. It is about growth, change, formation, and transformation. If we consider some of the verbs found in our philosophy statements, the theme of trans-

formation is evident. To form is to shape or mold into a certain state; to become is to undergo change or development; and to develop is to create or produce by deliberate effort over time. The verb to transform itself means to change in character or condition. And at Mount all of this becoming, developing, forming, and transforming is “imbued with religious faith and spiritual values” in an effort to bring the Gospel message to life in the lives of our students, and through them, to society as a whole. So yes, Mount is all about transformation. When a young person walks through our doors for the first time, it is hoped that when they leave our halls with diploma in hand, they will do so having become a different person. More importantly, they are challenged to make a difference in the world, thus transforming the world itself by their actions. Mount alumni across the country and throughout the world are doing just that at this very moment. My role as President of the Academy affords me a unique perspective. I have the opportunity to engage with students during their time with us, an opportunity I have thoroughly enjoyed for 34 years – as teacher, disciplinarian, principal, and president. I also have the opportunity to engage with our alumni and to witness first-hand the transformation they have undergone since entering as seventh, eight, or ninth graders. The people I once knew as students now serve in all walks of life; as priests, teachers, lawyers, doctors, school administrators, business men and women, soldiers, sailors, airmen, and parents, our alumni breathe life into our mission statement. Many have served and continue to serve on our Board of Directors as well

as on boards of countless other institutions. They have volunteered countless hours in cities and towns and mission countries around the world. I count myself as one who has been transformed by the Mount experience. I am the person I am today largely because of my Mount experience. It is because of the difference that Mount has made in our lives that we alumni continue to accept the challenge of our mission statement and strive to make a difference in our world, just as countless alumni who have gone before us have done. Perhaps the idea of transformation is best summed up in a statement found in “Hopes for Our Graduates:” “We are confident that based on their experience as students in a Brothers of the Sacred Heart school, our graduates are becoming well-rounded, faithfilled, self-disciplined, compassionate, and academically prepared men and women who respond to God’s love.” How has your Mount experience transformed you? I look forward to hearing your story and perhaps sharing it in future issues of MOUNT, on our website, or on our Facebook page. Excelsior! Herve Richer ’74 President Images by Bob DiCaprio

Dear Alumni, Benefactors and Friends of Mount, In this edition of the magazine, our emphasis is how Mount Saint Charles has helped to transform students. While it is true that we are very successful in providing our students the academic rigor they need to succeed in college, it is vitally true to our mission that we help to form them into adults who see the importance of faith and service to others. At a time when our nation is divided and violence seems to strike more frequently, our community succeeds by being faithful to the core belief and principle of the value of human life. Our faith calls us to be like the good Samaritan who stopped on the journey to give comfort to one who was suffering, not because that individual was from the same race or creed, but because the person was in need. Saint Teresa of Calcutta once said, “We can do no great things; only small things with great love. Below are just a few examples of the many acts of love which are part of the history of this wonderful school. This year our sister school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana had many members of their school community impacted by the flooding that hit that region in August. Though the school campus was not impacted by the rising water, many faculty and students lost homes and all of their possessions. Several students at 2

Mount Saint Charles came to see me to ask what could be done. One young lady decided her plan was to hold an outdoor movie on the lower field. Through her planning and efforts in cooperation with Campus Ministry, we were able to collect donations and presented a check last month to a faculty member from Catholic High. He was shocked and humbled by the tremendously generous exhibition of the connection we have as schools in the Tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Time and time again, Mounties have been transformed and made a difference in the lives of others through their selfless acts of love. Recently another group of students came to see me to inquire what we could do as a school to help the community of the Brothers in Haiti, which experienced complete devastation as a result of Hurricane Matthew. My objective in these instances is to put the responsibility back on the students to listen to their plan and assist them in finding ways to implement it. Our mission at Mount Saint Charles is to challenge our students to use their gifts and talents to serve others. Their plan is to have a bake sale here at the school to raise some funds for the people of Haiti. While this will not bring an end to the suffering of the people of Haiti, what it says is that our students see people suffering, and like Fr. Coindre, the founder of the

Brothers, are moved in their hearts to respond. I am so proud of their efforts, but more so of the realization that we must act out of compassion to offer help to others in the human family. One final example I wish to share to illustrate this truth is from the parent of two recent alumni who mentioned to me that his children’s experiences at Mount Saint Charles helped make them the people they are today. Both graduated from college and graduate school. One is serving in the healthcare industry and another is very active in church ministry. Both of them have come to see the need to give to others out of love through the example of their family and through their days at Mount Saint Charles. This common theme is repeated often from our alumni, parents, and current students. May we always be a school community which puts the needs of others at the forefront of our efforts. Loved be the Heart of Jesus.

I have been going to MSC for three years. However, prior to Mount, I never felt like I was being challenged enough at the middle school I attended. It was hard to go to school every day. I

something of a loner. I just never really clicked with anyone. But here, everyone has common goals. I have been able to obtain a better attitude towards life all because of those I have met at Mount. I feel I am not the same person I used to be when I first came to the school. I have grown smarter, more social, and have made so many new memories and experiences. Choosing to come to Mount was a big decision that I know I will never regret.

my friends always ask how I’m doing and how my Dad is doing. The Music Department even saved my mom a seat at a recent concert so she could Skype my father in to watch. The support has been incredible. Overall I can’t imagine being anywhere else but Mount. It’s where I feel supported, loved, and welcome. Mount will always be my home .

felt like I didn’t fit in and I didn’t look forward to school each day. Something was missing. I struggled with this issue through most of my school years. My mother, a Mount alumna, introduced me to Mount. For years, she had talked about how much she loved being a Mountie and the amazing friendships, experiences, teachers, classes and memories that she had. She took me to Open House and instantly I was excited to join the community. Coming to Mount has bettered me in so many ways. I have found the challenge I was looking for. Everyday the assignments, the classes, and the teachers give me the tools I need to achieve my later goals in life. I feel with the education I am receiving, I will be able to graduate college, get a job, and live a happy life. I do not believe I would be on the same path if I had not chosen Mount. Mount is so much more than academics. The community is also great. Everyone at Mount is very nice and has welcomed me, as well as everyone else, with open arms. The friends I have made have helped me grow to be a better person. I was always

Mount has definitely changed me for the better. When I got to Mount, I instantly felt at home. I am constantly surrounded by supportive people who are always there for me no matter what. I’ve met so many new people who are nothing less than respectful and kind. Having all of these supportive teachers and peers has showed me how much the Mount community actually does care; I’ve made great relationships while at Mount.

Stephanie Pitassi Class of 2006

I can now say I understand what it feels like to be in such a special community with people who are there for you and want what’s best for you. This year has been an example of that. While my father is deployed with the military, students and faculty members, who I don’t even know, have helped in so many ways. My TC has coordinated a meal train; teachers send my dad videos showing their support;

this knowledge bestowed upon our students, we hope that they grow up to be well-educated adults who strive to make a positive contribution to the world in which they live. During my time at Mount Saint Charles, I received a wellrounded education that focused on academics and community. I was fortunate enough to have motivating, encouraging, and caring teachers who not only stressed the importance of academics, but also demonstrated the importance of being a good person through their day to day actions. The teachers at Mount were knowledgeable and passionate about what they taught. I felt

F A L L

motivated to learn the material because they were so excited to teach it to us. If I had difficulty understanding a certain concept, they were willing to come in early in the morning, give up their prep periods, or stay after school to assist me with learning the material. These same teachers came to support students during sporting events, plays, choir/band concerts, etc. Nobody forced them to attend these events. They did it because they cared about their students and wanted to see them succeed. Many of these educators taught religious education classes or managed clubs like Best Buddies where teachers worked alongside students to volunteer and give back to the community. Through these actions, they demonstrated the importance of giving back to the community. During the course of my six years at Mount, I learned the value of a true education because of the dedicated, passionate, and caring staff. I am a teacher today because of the positive impact these educators made on my life.

When I arrived at Mount in 1978, I was coming from Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, New Hampshire. Mount was my first experience with co-education, but that is not what changed

2 0 1 6

my life. My move here introduced me to the most amazing educational experience by immersing me into the Teacher Counselor Program. My former principal, Br. Raymond Reinsant, told me in 1978 that my most important role at Mount would be as a Teacher Counselor. Little did I know how much this would change my life as an educator. Years before educational experts discovered the importance of establishing teacher – student bonds and how having a significant adult in the school to confide in helps with student adjustment, Mount had already established their Teacher Counselor (Teacher Advisor) program. We were ahead of most educational experts. How did it change my life? I discovered quickly that young people need someone who shows an active interest in their life and a teacher with whom they can share their successes as well as their failures. You create such relationships by spending time with them in the morning, socializing with them during TC period; organizing social/community building events such as having donuts and hot chocolate on special occasions, visiting a corn maze or a trip to LaSalette Shrine at Christmas, etc. Trying to get to know ‘what makes them tick’ is accomplished by quarterly interviews. By my getting to know these young people outside of an academic setting where a grade is involved, they have come to see me as more than just their teacher. It is a humbling experience, but so rewarding. What is the result of this program? I have had the opportunity to be a confirmation sponsor to many of my TC’s, as well as share in their weddings, family events and often, be with them at the funerals of their parents. There is no greater feeling than to receive a text message, email or phone call from a former TC saying hello or coming to visit at school. There are groups of TC’s who gather occasionally and invite me for the event. My relationship with so

many of them never ends at graduation, but continues for years to come. As a Brother with no children, so many of my TC’s are like my own children, although now, it’s becoming more like my ‘grandchildren.’ As my ministry here has changed, moving from teaching Spanish to teaching only Religious Studies, the one constant in my life is, and always will be, my role as a Teacher Counselor.

Gary Gibson Class of 1969

I grew up in a working class neighborhood in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where my father worked on the night shift making automobile tires. I was the oldest of five kids and we lived in an 800 square foot apartment with three tiny bedrooms. There was no central heat or hot water. The kitchen stove had a small gas heater on the side, which was our only source of heat. We had moved so many times before settling in ‘The Flats’ that I had to repeat the first grade. Not realizing that all the months of migration had interrupted my education, I assumed I was ‘not smart’ and did not take my education seriously. In 1963, my parents were divorced and neither one of them were able to support the five of us children. My maternal grandparents took me into their home and my four siblings went into foster homes. I did well in the local Catholic school, but my grandparents were worried how I might

College and earned a BA with honors in Philosophy & Theology. I married a wonderful ‘Boston Girl’ and we just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. My education gave me skills in logical thinking, team building, public speaking, and writing short stories. I have been published in Catholic Digest, The Word Among Us, and wrote a short story for a 1994 book of meditations called ‘An Angel A Day’. I became an avid runner and competed in many 10K races over the years. Our five children live in five different states and we have eight grandchildren. I did well in blue collar and white collar settings, spending 20 years as an IT software developer & project manager and another 20 years running a business as a professional housepainter. My time at the Mount prepared me well to run my own businesses and to lead and inspire others to do their best. It also laid the groundwork for me to grow in my Catholic Faith as a mature adult. I will never forget what these three years at the Mount gave me in those pivotal teenage years.

turn out in the local public high school. However, the local private schools were expensive. Since I was a ‘ward of the state,’ I was eligible to attend a boarding school within certain financial limits. After my freshman year in a New Hampshire school, I was asked to leave for bad behavior. In the fall of 1966, I was sent to ‘the Mount’ as a sophomore, hoping for a better outcome. This changed everything. I started doing well in my school work, due to the encouragement and discipline of the academic staff. I began to make new friends and explored the extracurricular activities there, deciding to join the cross country team and the Christian Action Movement. I taught CCD to the mentally challenged. New opportunities presented themselves all the time. The tight bond of the boarding students made me feel ‘at home’. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart really cared about us as individuals and offered me much needed advice on how to succeed. I became organized and confident, even making the school Honor Roll by the end of my first year at the Mount. In my junior year, I kicked it up a notch by joining the Debate Society and was inducted into the National Honor Society. I was encouraged to run for the student council and had to publicly speak to hundreds of my peers, explaining why I wanted the job — and got it! I continued improving my GPA and took more challenging classes. In my senior year, my guidance counselor asked me what colleges I was planning to apply to. I gave him a blank stare; I was clueless. Then he told me I was one of the ‘top 10’ students in my class and I should apply to as many schools as possible, including the best ones. I was accepted to four colleges and decided on Boston College. I later learned that I had academic and financial scholarships to cover all my tuition, room, and board for four years. I did very well at Boston

education, would videotape his students making speeches. One day, he pulled me, a freshman, out of the hallway, showed me how to work a video recording machine, and told me I was going to record the speech of a classmate, one who stuttered and had great anxiety about speaking in public. It took us two and a half hours to get that one-minute speech, but we finally got a good take. We were both very proud. Principal Br. Paul Demers heard that I had bunked several typing classes in my junior year. He also heard I liked to read. He changed my schedule and created an Independent Literature course for me - he would name a novel, I would have two weeks to read it, and on Fridays we walked up and down the third floor (where I have now been teaching English for 35 years) discussing the book. Eschewing his directions and paper requirements, I presumptuously and rebelliously wrote my senior Psychology term paper in Br. Leo Labbe’s class in the voice of Holden Caulfield and handed it in a week late. Br. Leo gave me an A+ and told me it was the most insightful and engaging paper he’d ever read. These Brothers made me feel that I mattered, that I had something to offer, and that the spirit of the law supersedes the letter of the law. They made me a teacher.

R ichard L awrence Director of Athletics and English Teacher Two stories…each taking place nearly 50 years apart. The first story occurred in the fall of 1969. I had arrived for the first day of school. bittersweet nostalgia. With the rigor of its curriculum, its lively community and religious life, and undeniable school spirit, Mount has truly made an impact on my life. The source of most of this change, however, was Mount’s Fine Arts Department. I have been a member of the choir here for five years, been chosen for the select choir for four years, and have participated in 11 of Mount’s drama productions, whether I was onstage or behind the scenes. At this point in my high school career, I have seen so many people enter and leave the program, and through it I have made countless friends. Something that I will never forget about my experience in our Fine Arts Department was my first Mount drama production, with which some seniors of the Class of 2012 volunteered to help. They had done this same play earlier in their high school careers, and I can distinctly remember listening to them reminisce about who played what role, and what the set looked like, and the students who had acted alongside them who had since graduated. I, a new student, had no idea what that was like. I marveled at the sense of friendship they had, the bonds they had with each other and with the people who had moved on from the school. Meanwhile, I hadn’t kept in touch with a single friend from my old school. Needless to say, I wanted what they had. Now I am a senior of the class

coach at this school. Nervous and unsure of myself, I parked my car and made my way to the school entrance. At that moment a student stepped in front me, recognizing my uncertainty, and asked if he could be of assistance. A simple act of kindness – but one I have never forgotten. The second story took place just recently, more than 48 years later. I bumped into a woman, a former parent whose son had graduated nearly 20 years ago. She asked how things were going at the school. In our conversation, she alluded to the fact that when she had first entered the school with her son many years ago, she felt a certain sense of welcoming. She said that she knew that her son had experienced a similar feeling as well. She went on to say that she has never forgotten that experience and to this day holds a fondness for this school as well as a sense of appreciation for what it provided in her son’s development as a person. People often ask me why I have remained here so long. My response is simple, but always the same. It is because the school with all of its students brings light into my life. It continues to welcome me every day as it has for so many others. Why would I ever want to leave?

of 2017. Nearly five years later, at noon on Saturday, November 5th, I pulled into the Mount parking lot and entered the theater. The first thing I saw through the doors were the brightly colored set pieces that I helped paint. I was the stage manager for the junior high musical, Alice in Wonderland, and it felt absolutely surreal. The kids were asking me questions; they were listening to my advice; they were looking up to me. They were exactly where I was when I was in the seventh grade. And I was exactly where I had aspired to be when I was their age- in my home, the Bell Tower Theater, inspiring our young actors just as I had been inspired when I first came to Mount. I couldn’t have gotten to this point in my life without the help of my family, Ms. Dyer, and before her, Mr. Cooney. They pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me opportunities that I would have never dared to hope for. I couldn’t have done it without all the actors and actresses who came before me: Jennifer Lepine ’15; Marissa Liotta ’16; Aidan Kennedy ’16; Rebecca Swiscz ’14; Jonathan Goff ’15; Brooke Vescera ’16; Jillian Bernier ’16; Ryan Choate ’15, and so, so many more who did amazing work and showed me how spectacular Mount’s performers can be. The same goes for alumni like Allison Pine ’16; Adam Landry ’12; and my brother, Adam Mercier ’15, all of who made tech rehearsals and shows run more smoothly than I could have imagined, and all who had incredible work ethics and clear heads. These people were not only role models; some of them were my friends, my best friends. And all of them were my family, no matter how close of a personal relationship we had. Together, we had all made magic happen onstage, and this simple incredible fact united us. By putting these people in my life and by letting me be a part of something truly phenomenal, Mount and its Fine Arts Department has truly changed me by making me a part of its family.

Coach Seaver Retires from MSC Baseball In June of 2016, Mr. Tom Seaver retired from coaching baseball after a 37-year career. Thirty-one of those years were spent coaching at Mount with 24 years of having served as the head baseball coach.

Mr. Seaver finished with 325 career victories during those 24 years. The MSC baseball team made it to nine state semi-finals and five state finals under his leadership. Mr. Seaver’s teams won three Division II state titles, in 2009,

2010, and 2015. The 2009 and 2010 teams also enjoyed a stellar 35-game winning streak. Thank you for all you have contributed to Mount Saint Charles Academy and to our student athletes! You have been and continue to be an integral part of our community!

“Mount Saint Charles Academy has helped change my life by giving me the opportunity to pursue two of my favorite passions. As a young boy growing up in Milford, Massachusetts, I enjoyed both history and baseball. At Providence College, I thought that maybe I would end up in a job in the business world. But somehow the curving journey of life led me to Woonsocket, Rhode Island in 1981. I soon was teaching history and coaching baseball. Coaches such as Mike Masterson ‘71 and baseball players such as John Daloisio ‘84 and Henry Ferry ‘87 made me feel right at home at Mount with my first junior varsity team in the spring of 1981. Teachers such as Joe O’Neill in the MSC History department and students such as Martha Wood ‘90 and Dan Hulse ‘90 made me feel quite welcome in 1984 in my new classroom on the fourth floor. The rest of the story, as the old saying goes, is history. Almost four decades later, I savor my memories on the baseball field, and with the help of new MSC students, I continue to make new memories in the classroom.” —Tom Seaver

Charitable Giving In a Time of Uncertainty Provided By:

Christopher J. Bouley ’82

I

n the current economic environment, smart giving requires the same carefully constructed, strategic thinking that we apply to the rest of your finances. Even during the recession, almost half of all donors made gifts at the same level as in years past, with 26% of donors actually increasing their gift levels.* We need to be sure your philanthropic efforts are aligned with your other financial strategies so that charitable aspirations aren’t fulfilled at the expense of important objectives, and vice versa. Most people practice a form of “checkbook philanthropy,” which involves simply writing checks regularly to a particular organization, or randomly in response to requests from multiple organizations and individuals. While donating cash is simple and straightforward, it doesn’t always offer optimal tax advantages. Donating appreciated securities—instead of selling the securities first, paying capital gains tax and then contributing the proceeds— may be a better alternative. If the charity sells the stock after it receives the donation, as a tax-exempt organization, it will not pay tax on the capital gains triggered by the sale. Charitable giving vehicles Besides what to donate—cash, securities or tangible assets like cars and art— another major issue to consider is how. You may choose to give to charity outright or donate through a charitable vehicle, such as a donor advised fund, private family foundation, charitable trust, gift annuity or pooled income fund. All offer various tax benefits but differ in their structure and administrative requirements. Three of the most common are:

• Donor advised funds. The fastest growing form of philanthropy, donor advised funds offer a simple and organized way to give. Donors make tax- deductible contributions of cash or securities to the fund, and can direct the fund to make grants to charities of their choice. Contributions are invested and professionally managed, giving donors the potential to have their contributions grow and make larger grants over time. • Charitable trusts. Charitable trusts offer an immediate income tax deduction and can be structured to provide an income stream to either the donor or the charity. Charitable Remainder Trusts allow the donor to transfer assets to the trust and receive payments for a certain term, with the charity receiving any remaining assets at the end of that term. Charitable Lead Trusts pay the income stream to the charity, with any remaining assets in the trust passing to the donor’s heirs free of gift and estate taxes. • Private foundations. Private foundations are often established with larger donations by an individual or family to further a charitable purpose. They offer donors control over grants and a way to encourage heirs to get involved in philanthropy. Private foundations, however, can have high administrative costs, offer a more limited income tax deduction, and require an annual distribution to charity of 5% of foundation assets. If you’d consider yourself a checkbook philanthropist or you just want to know how to get more out of your charitable giving, let’s talk about ways to make your philanthropy more organized and effective. We can discuss:
