Dear Friends of Mount,

O

ur lives are filled with moments of celebration – holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, births, christenings, job promotions. We note achievements and mark accomplishments with joy and festivity. We revel in the goodness of life’s experiences. The dictionary defines celebration as “to observe a notable occasion with festivities.” In the life of a school, we find so may notable occasions that are worthy of festivity – achievements and accomplishments that call for us step out of the ordinary business of the day and take time to revel in what has transpired. Fireworks sparkle over our school building at the end of a pops concert and mark the joy of our school community; students enjoy one another’s company at our annual Mount Day; the gymnasium is filled with proud family and friends of hall of fame inductees; family and friends gather to honor students at academic convocation; Pomp and Circumstance welcomes another class of graduates into the arena. There are so many reasons for us to celebrate here at Mount and in this issue of MOUNT we note many of our recent celebrations. But there is another defi-

T H E

P R E S I D E N T

nition of the verb celebrate that I believe is appropriate for us to consider. The word also means “to hold up or play up for public notice.” If we consider this second definition, I believe that everything that Mount is and for which Mount stands for is worthy of celebration. Our very mission is worthy of celebration, worthy of public notice. The greater public needs to know the greatness that is Mount and its students, faculty, and alumni. Yes, we should celebrate our victories and accomplishments. But we need also celebrate all the good that happens in our school each and every day. We should celebrate the respect our students demonstrate for their peers and their teachers; we should celebrate the random acts of kindness we witness in our hallways each and every day; we should celebrate each and every moment of honorable competition exhibited by our student athletes; and we should celebrate the daily acts of service performed by our students at nursing homes, soup kitchens, elementary schools, and other venues throughout the greater community. I may be dating myself, but I can’t help but think of the song by Kool and the Gang in which they intoned, “Celebrate good times, come on.” It is right and good that we should indeed celebrate our good times, for they

are worthy of celebration. But let’s come together as friends and alumni of this great school and celebrate in the manner of the other definition – let us all find a way to give public notice of what Mount is all about. Let the world know that Mount is a place that is making a difference in the world, a place where young men and women can learn what it means to be people of love, peace, and justice. For what they do each and every day is worthy of the grandest of celebrations. I send to all of you the very best wishes of all of us here at Mount. I pray the summer months bless each of you with many opportunities to celebrate family, friends, and the goodness of life. And may the months that follow be filled with many opportunities to celebrate together the many successes of our students and alumni. Excelsior!

Dear Alumni and Friends of Mount,

C

ertainly we can all relate to experiences in our lives which allow us to celebrate our joy, accomplishments, and successes. Perhaps it was a promotion, the birth of a child, an anniversary, a college degree, or a new job. Regardless of the “what we celebrate, the satisfaction and enthusiasm which such events create is common to each of them. Commencement 2016 was another occasion in my life where I truly relished the opportunity to interact with and join members of the school community in appreciation for all that transpired. Meeting with the gentlemen from the Class of 1966 brought me back to a time when the world was in a period of turmoil and friction, not unlike today. Members of this class left the halls of Mount Saint Charles Academy and went to war in Southeast Asia. They did not share the tragedies of that experience with me, though some proudly wore the ribbon indicative of a soldier who was wounded in combat. Rather, they proudly spoke of service to our nation, and of their joy in surviving the ordeal. Further, they profoundly celebrated life, and journeyed back with me to their days as a student. They relayed 2

stories of the men they shared their classes with, the teachers they had, and the physical space they occupied as students. For me, and I believe for them, it was a celebration of the lives they have lived since their days as students. It is quite appropriate that we welcome these golden anniversary Mounties back to the campus the same weekend as we send our newest graduates on to their next phase of life. Our commencement speakers from the Class of 2016 shared a common theme in their remarks. Each indicated how important their membership in the Mount community was to their formation and growth. They spoke of their expectations to continue to share what they learned at Mount of the need to be of service to others, they thanked their teachers and parents for the roles each played in their development. Some celebrated the accomplishments of the senior class in the numerous scholarships they earned to institutions of higher learning and the diversity of schools they will attend in the fall. In this class we had Eagle Scouts, all-state musicians, all-state athletes, accomplished singers and actors, talented equestrians, artists, debaters, Advanced Placement scholars and National History Day competitors. The list of talents and

skills they possess is quite impressive. Through it all, however, one common thread pervades, and that is the importance of the values they learned as Mounties. Like so many of their fellow alumni, members of the Class of 2016 completed over ten thousand hours of service over the last four years. Imagine the impact that these experiences had on the recipients of their efforts. In the midst of difficulties in the news and uncertainty in the future, it is essential to accentuate the fact that we do make a difference in the world. Indeed, we have much for which to be thankful, and much to celebrate. As principal, I thank you alumni and benefactors for the countless ways you have contributed and continue to contribute to the good work being done every day. Loved be the Heart of Jesus.

POPS ON THE GREEN—A GRAND CELEBRATION! Mount Saint Charles held its 51st annual Pops Concert on Saturday, May 21, 2016 on the lower field of the Academy’s campus. Open to the public, guests brought blankets, lawn chairs, coolers and their picnic baskets as they enjoyed the biggest concert spectacle in Mount history. There were also a variety of activities and food booths for everyone to enjoy. The Academy’s junior band, senior band, wind ensemble, two jazz bands, and chorus all performed that evening. This year’s Pops on the Green

also took place on Armed Forces Day. Mount took the opportunity to honor alumni who served or are currently serving in the military. The wind ensemble and chorus performed Armed Forces–The Pride of America as all Military Mounties were recognized. The Rhode Island National Guard presented colors. The finale was a grand display which included a performance of the 1812 Overture

accompanied by a fantastic fireworks show and cannons provided by the Artillery Company of Newport. The annual tradition of the pops concert, which is fashioned after the Boston Pops, began in 1965 as an indoor concert. The first “Pops on the Green” was introduced in 2009 and was brought back, with much success, in 2012 and again in 2016.

Father Charlie Quinn Celebrates 50 Years as a Priest!

T

he 50th anniversary celebration of Father Charlie’s ordination to the priesthood took place on Saturday, June 18, 2016. The special day began with Fr. Charlie saying Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Eugene’s Church in Chepachet, RI (he retired from St. Eugene’s before moving to the Brothers’ Residence in Pascoag). Around 200 relatives, Brothers, friends, and former parishioners of Father Charlie were in attendance. Host pastor of St. Eugene’s, Father T.J. Varghese welcomed guests. The first reading at Mass was proclaimed by MSC principal Mr. Edwin Burke and the Gospel

reading was proclaimed by Father John Hunt, seminary classmate and friend of Father Charlie. The Prayer of the Faithful was done by Br. Clifford King, SC. Bishop Robert Evans, presided over the Mass and also spoke a few words, at the end, in recognition of Fr. Charlie. Jacob Lawrence, MSC Class of 2018, served as the altar server.

Following Mass, the celebration continued with a catered meal in the parish hall. Throughout the gathering, several of Fr. Charlie’s beloved friends spoke in his honor: Herve Richer, president of MSC; Joanne Weaver, long-time friend of Father Charlie; and Richard Lawrence, teacher and athletic director at MSC.

“Fr. Charlie Quinn found in the Brothers a kindred spirit. In their charism and mission, he found a dedication to service which was a reflection of his own desire to serve the people of God. In Mount Saint Charles, he found a home. And in him, countless Mount students, especially hundreds of young soccer players, found a friend. For many of those young men, he has been a lifelong friend.” “Fr. Charlie, thank you for sharing your life with God’s people here in our little corner of the world. But most especially thank you for your many years of dedication to Mount, its mission, and its students, and for opening your door and your heart to each of them. Never doubt that you have made a difference. Never doubt that you have been a success. And always know that Mount and its students have been made better by your presence.”

Quotes by Herve Richer ’74, President of Mount Saint Charles

F

r. Charlie’s journey at Mount began in the fall of 1982 when he arrived to serve as the school chaplain. He went on to become MSC’s full time chaplain, a religion teacher, and eventually the junior high boys soccer coach. In 1987, Fr. Charlie left the Academy to serve as pastor of St. Raymond’s. He continued to serve as the junior high boys soccer coach for over 25 years and maintained a presence and connection with Mount and its students. Upon his retirement from active parish ministry, Fr. Charlie returned to Mount to once again serve as chaplain. To this day, he continues to maintain a presence as a volunteer when he can.

After Mount, Anthony went on to play Division I tennis at the University of Hartford. He played for four seasons and earned a place on the American East All-Conference team. After college, he has continued to share his skills in tennis, becoming the Head Tennis Professional at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehood, MA.

He was named to the All-Conference team three times and was awarded the Northeast Athletic Conference “Player of the Year.” He was inducted into the Johnson and Wales University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.

Mia So Yung Shaffer ’01 is one of Mount’s most outstanding volleyball players. She earned All-State honors in her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons and was also named the top volleyball player in the state of Rhode Island when she was selected as the Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year in 2001. She was the volleyball team MVP in two seasons and was named Mount’s Outstanding Athlete of the Year in her senior year (she also played soccer, basketball, and hockey and competed in indoor track). After Mount, she played at Rhode Island College and was the team MVP in 2002. Mia returned to the Academy to coach the junior varsity team for five years.

The 1978 Hockey Team scored a total of 307 goals over the course of its season, averaging 8.5 per game. The team finished the season with a 35-1 mark, winning the State and New England titles, and being ranked number two in the country. This team had three All-State players, two future NHL players and 14 who went on to play in the college ranks. Team members: Marc Sarasin, Joel Guay, Bruce Kraftcheck, Mark Lester, Denis Plante, Marc Beauchamp, Tom Anchukaitis, Ron Dezeil, Mike Samborsky, Dan Potter, Jim Colucci, Bob Edwards, Mike Hodson, Ed Lee, Ken Fargnoli, Mike Gouin, Paul Guay, Pat Manocchia, Bob Carignan, Dave Guevremont, Mike Picard, Marc St. George, Tim Plante, George Pisaruk, and Barry McColgan, Coaches Bill Belisle, Larry Tremblay and Phil Cerrone and team moderator Brother Leo Labbe.

1978 HOCKEY TEAM

In addition to the inductees, the Academy presented the Spirit of Sport Award during the induction ceremony. This is a special recognition award given to an indi1978 HOCKEY TEAM vidual in the Mount Saint Charles community who exemplifies the ideals of the positive spirit of sport and represents the core mission of education based athletics. This year’s recipient was Marc E. Staelen ’71. He was not only one of the players on Mount’s first soccer team in 1968, but also a four year varsity player and team captain in his senior year. He, along with his brother Jack, was a force to be reckoned with and helped Mount to several wins that first season. Beyond athletics, Marc served as class secretary and, in his senior year, also served as class president. He was a member of the student council and served as the secretary. For his involvement in school activities, he won the Congressman Fernand St.Germain Leadership and Perseverance Award. After graduating from the Academy, he attended the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. There he played four years of varsity soccer. Presently, Marc is the President of Sport Systems Custom Bag. For the past 25 years, he has been responsible for sponsoring Mount’s Alumni soccer games. He also has served as a sponsor for the Holiday MSC Hockey Tournament. He provides sports bags for Mount’s junior high, junior varsity and varsity teams as well as book bags for the Open House.
