Kim And Children Join Single Parent Program

I

t’s always a blessing to welcome a new family into the Single Parent Program, especially when that family is as delightful as Kimetra Johnson and her two children.

Kim and her family joined us in January and are originally from Canton, Mississippi. She brings with her a daughter, Se’Niah Love Banks, 11, who is a fifth-grader at Mount Dora Christian Academy, and George Earl Banks III, age 7, who is in the first-grade class for autistic children at Triangle Elementary School.

Johnnie Coley, the social worker who oversees the Single Parent Program, praised Kim for her progress in the program thus far.

“Kim has become an amazing single parent in the short time she has been in our Single Parent Program,” Johnnie said. “She has modeled an attitude of being driven and focused on success. She is employed, working on her certification in childcare and raising an autistic child and an honor roll fifth grader. We are so pleased with the progress she’s making.”

Kim is working in childcare at Amazing Kids Academy in Eustis and hopes to pursue a degree in early childhood education and become a teacher.

“I need the Single Parent Program to provide a stable home, stable environment with Christian values for myself as well as my children,” Kim said. “My goals for being part of this program are to create and maintain a lasting relationship with God, and also to use this time to work, save money, gain a career and provide a nurturing atmosphere for my children. My dreams are to finish school with great grades, to have the ability to provide a home for my children and me, and to be one step closer to where God wants me to be.”

Benefit dinners More than justspread news about Children’s Home

B

enefit dinners have been held this year in Montgomery, Ala., Jacksonville and Tampa. The Tampa dinner, one of our larger fundraising events of the year, was held April 30th and also featured a silent auction. More benefit dinners are planned for this fall, including Nashville (August 6) and Pensacola (Oct. 1).

Next step: COLLEGE Our Children’s Home Graduates

A

ll of this spring’s graduating seniors from Mount Dora Children’s Home are headed toward college this fall – and thankful for their time living at the Children’s Home.

Marissa Pereira, also spent her junior and senior years of high school living at Mount Dora Children’s Home, and said she appreciates the positive impact the experience has had on her life.

“I’m really grateful for everything here,” said Mia King. “Everybody here is so encouraging; everyone is rooting for me. Here, I feel like I have an entire fan club who wants me to go to college and get myself together. That really helps.”

“It’s helped me realize my good qualities … and how I deal with people,” Marissa said, adding that she’s learned to get along with people better by living in a group home.

Like the other graduating seniors, Mia spent a relatively short time at the Children’s Home, only coming here about a year ago, but she credits that year with helping her in many ways.

“

One of the top things (about MDCH) is it has kept me out of trouble,” Mia said. “Being here has allowed me to make friends I should have instead of friends I should not have in my life.”

Graduating senior Jeremiah Pierre spent his final two years of high school at MDCH and said he’s grateful for the people he’s met here.

“It (coming to MDCH) has helped me and my family tremendously,” Jeremiah said. “From the school friends I’ve made here and all the teachers and coaches I’ve met. All of that was definitely life changing.”

Jeremiah credits his time at the Children’s Home and Mount Dora Christian Academy for helping him grow spiritually.

“I wasn’t into the whole Christian environment (prior to coming here) and didn’t really commit to that,” Jeremiah said. “Once I came here, I just had a whole new understanding of life.”

Josh Lewis, who has spent the least amount of time at the Children’s Home, has nevertheless found time to be active in sports, robotics and The Way (student club) as a senior at MDCA. Marissa, Jeremiah, Josh and Mia all have high hopes for college and their careers. Marissa expects to enroll at Daytona State College and later transfer to a four-year university. She is considering medical fields or psychology. One career choice she’s exploring is being a physician’s assistant. Josh hasn’t picked a college yet but hopes to major in either business or education.

Both Mia and Jeremiah hope to attend Christian colleges. Jeremiah has been accepted to Faulkner University and Mia has applied to Harding University. Like Marissa, Mia is considering a career in psychology.

“I like helping people,” Mia said. “I like encouraging other people, and that’s why I want to study psychology.”

Jeremiah is considering careers in ministry or sports medicine, which won’t come as a surprise to those who know him. He and his younger brothers Jasper and Jesiah have all played sports at MDCA, and Jeremiah has delivered devotional talks in chapel and at MDCH benefit dinners.

n early March, Mount Dora Christian Academy set aside an entire day of academic instruction to serve the surrounding community. MDCA students from PK2-12th grade traveled around Lake County and Orlando to serve organizations such as Lake Cares, Habitat for Humanity, and the Russell Home. Many students traveled to Umatilla to clean up and sort through items that had been donated to the Dads for Boys Ranch.

Fourth and Fifth grade students walked to Waterman Village to visit with residents. A few students formed friendships with some of the residents.

Fourth Grader Kendall Abrams comments on her time at Waterman Village, “I loved going to Waterman Village! My favorite thing was getting to know a new friend named Esther. I loved that I could make her smile and be ‘her granddaughter’ for the day. I hope to go back to visit her soon.”

FaithWorks @ MDCA, an organized day of service, began in 2015 in effort to put faith into action by doing good works for the community. Organizers Anne Elenz and Kristen Box worked to find local organizations to provide a helping hand or a warm smile. “FaithWorks 2016 was absolutely inspirational. There were so many parts to organize into one cohesive day and for it all to work out the way that it did – it was truly blessed by God. From the community, to the administration, to the faculty and staff, to the parents and ultimately to the students who participated, I can only be thankful and grateful for their involvement and support.” comments Elenz.

Many organizations sent thank you letters to the school and the students for visiting their facilities. Waterman Village President and CEO Andrew Dujon commented, “I have had a number of residents share with me that they ‘just loved hearing kids’ voices outside’ and how it reminded them of raising their own children.”

— Tim Tebow Mount Dora Christian Academy and Children’s Home was honored to have Tim Tebow speak at the Inaugural Benefit Gala in April. The breezy April day began as President Dr. James Moore welcomed Tebow to the campus. After a brief tour Tebow headed to the Thompson House to meet the children in the Children’s Home and the families in the Single Parent Program. During his time at the Girls Cottage, Tim signed memorabilia, took pictures with the kids, and answered any questions they had for him. Senior Jeremiah Pierre asked, “How he used his faith to be a leader on and off the field?”

“Jeremiah Quote” After spending time with the kids in the Children’s Home and Single Parent Program, Tebow attended a special VIP event. Sponsors of the event and their close friends enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, mingling with fellow sponsors and getting a picture with Tim Tebow. The evening program began with President Dr. James Moore speaking on behalf of the Children’s Home. Tebow finished the evening starting with describing the difficulty of choosing which college to attend. He concluded his speech with illustrating the impact each person can make on many people’s lives. MDCA thanked Tebow by presenting a MDCA Bulldog football jersey to him, complete with his name and number. All proceeds from the event went to the Children’s Home and Single Parent Program.

Things Are

I

n January all VPK programs in the state of Florida celebrated Literacy Week for VPK. During this special week, law enforcement officers from all over the state visit their local VPK classrooms to read the book “Where the Wild Things Are.” The MDCA Preschool decorated the lobby with the theme.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officer Chad Weber brought in two baby alligators, real life wild things for the kids to hold and touch.

A Seussical Birthday!

E

ach year MDCA elementary classes come together to celebrate a very happy holiday, Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. This week long celebration is filled with whimsical crafts, tasty treats, and even a wacky Wednesday! This year, VPK through fifth grade students gathered in the dining hall to celebrate his birthday with unique snacks and themed decorations for each table! From Cat in the Hat to Oh! The Places You Will Go, students sang a cheerful happy birthday to honor a beloved author on his special day!

his year 24 of our seniors took an allinclusive trip to Gatlinburg, TN. While on the trip, the students got to horseback ride through the mountains, zipline, learn how to ski, and go tubing at Ober Gatlinburg. Senior Caroline Brooks recaps the trip, “It was a lot of fun, and the perfect opportunity for class bonding. My favorite part was horseback riding, I enjoyed everyone’s reaction to riding a horse for the first time!” Many seniors experienced many “firsts” while on the trip. Some students had never seen snow or been on a zipline before. First time zipliner Brooke Fuller said, “I was terrified to go ziplining, but after the first couple of courses, I was having a blast!”

MDCA’s with the band!

M

ount Dora Christian Academy will welcome Mountain Faith Band back in February. Mountain Faith Band is a bluegrass band from Sylva, North Carolina made up of one family and a couple of close friends. Before their debut on America’s Got Talent in 2014, the band members worked together at their father’s tire shop and practice in between customers. Mountain Faith Band travels across the country to perform for schools and share their experience on a reality TV show and the lessons they’ve learned from their journey as musicians. While at MDCA, the elementary and secondary students received a special performance of cover songs and original faith-based songs. The band members took a moment to thank the elementary kids for coming by giving each student a high five! The secondary students crowded the stage for the conclusion of the show and sang along while the band played a popular tune! After the show, the band let students take pictures with them and ask questions about their tour. Mountain Faith Band members Summer and Cory also surprised the seniors and greeted them at their hotel in Gatlinburg, TN just a week after their visit to Mount Dora.

Melody Coe tailors her storytelling

M

ount Dora Christian Academy Sophomore Melody Coe performed her version of Jewish folktale “The Tailor” at Florida Storytelling Festival in early April. Melody was one of the four recipients of the 2016 Virginia Rivers Scholarships for Youthful Voices. Melody comments on her newfound talent, “During my time at the storytelling festival we worked, as youthful voices, with the featured tellers of the Festival. We worked on technique and just learned more about the art of storytelling.

Then I performed with the other winners that following Saturday night at the concert. I have just recently discovered this art which has been around for quite a while and I am so glad I did. It has expanded my horizons of the performing arts, and I am looking forward to the opportunities to further my knowledge in this newfound talent of storytelling.”

MDCA Leads Beta

M

ount Dora Christian Academy is pleased to announce the induction of two students and one faculty member into Florida Senior Beta Club Leadership. In November, 7th grader Hannah Leto was elected president of the Junior Beta Club, and in January Junior Christian Abbate was elected President of Senior Beta for the State of Florida. Media Specialist and MDCA Beta Sponsor Anne Elenz was also selected to serve as the Florida Beta State Sponsor. To be selected as President of Beta, Abbate delivered a powerful two minute speech followed by a one minute campaign skit comprised of Senior Beta Club members that illustrated Abbate’s message. The message used Alice and Wonderland as a theme, tying in the all-too-famous words, “It’s only impossible if you believe it is.” National Beta Clubs across Florida voted and elected Christian to serve as President for the coming 2016 year. As State Sponsor, Anne Elenz will serve for three years and is responsible for planning and organizing the 2017 State Convention.

Toys For Tots Awards Teacher Diana Grubbs

M

ount Dora Christian Academy Presented English Teacher and National Beta Sponsor Diana Grubbs with an award from The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Each year Diana Grubbs dedicates much of her time promoting and collecting items for Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots benefits over 12,500 children who are not able to receive Christmas gifts each year. This year 49,000 toys were donated to the cause nationwide. Mount Dora Christian Academy President Dr. James Moore presented to the Commander’s Award plaque to Mrs. Grubbs for outstanding service that read, “Your generous contributions have enabled the Marine Corps to bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to America for less fortunate children.”

After receiving the award, Grubbs responded to the recognition, “I am just the organizer of this,” begins Grubbs. “You all (the students and families) bring in the toys. You sacrifice a little bit, you sacrifice your time, you sacrifice your effort and you go that extra mile to bring toys in for these children. I know some of the children who received toys this year, and I know they don’t get much and they really look forward to this. So thank you for all you do to make this a successful effort.”

A

t this year’s Boyd Scholarship Dinner six of the original 55 students attended the event to support Christian education. “It goes to show you, our roots run deep and our school creates friendships that last a lifetime.” says President James Moore. Coach Hill Retires A

fter coaching varsity basketball at MDCA for a total of 20 years, Coach Mike Hill retired after the 2015-16 season. “It’s been a blessing to work with and influence kids through the avenue of basketball,” he said. Coach Hill’s name is synonymous with basketball at MDCA, first as a star player from seventh through twelfth grades, and then as a coach.

He was inducted into the MDCA Athlete Hall of Fame in 1994 for his basketball accomplishments as a player, and he still holds the school record for Career Assists, Most Assists in One Season, and Best Assist Average.

Hill coached the varsity boys for 16 seasons, beginning in 1985 and ending in 2001. In 2012, he coached the varsity girls, and remained as their head coach for four seasons. He led his 2013-14 girls team to a 23-7 season, clinching the Class 3A District 5 championship and moving on to the Elite 8. Hill names Benny Hunton and Cletus Stutzman as the two coaches who most influenced him in athletics because of their dedication to their sport and their Christian examples. Likewise, Coach Hill has earned the respect of the young men and women he has coached over the course of 20 years. Says MDCA President James Moore, “We are grateful to Coach Hill for his Christian example, and for all of the time, passion, expertise, and commitment he put into our basketball program. The athletes who played for him were blessed to have him as their coach.”

Alumnae Jan Laidlaw Phillipi, Barbara Hendrix Williams, and Julia Hendrix Bolena were one of the first three children in the Children’s Home along with Former organization board member Jack McDonald.

“I grew up the home there with all of them except Judith, she lived in the city,” said Jack McDonald, on the reunion at the Boyd Dinner.

“I loved every minute of living on the campus with the others and still remain friends with them today. It means a lot to me not only to be friends with them, but that they come back to special events on campus.”
