MDCA teachers and staff went all out for the first elementary-wide Fairy Tale Ball this spring, showing our students how much fun it can be to dream big and imagine boldly.
insights Friends, Watch or read the news today, and I think you’ll agree — there has never been a more critical time to care for children in need, walk alongside singleparent families seeking a new and healthy chapter, and provide students with an intentional, Christ-centered education. The world around us is often confusing and chaotic, but here at Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home, we are committed to being a light in the darkness. As I reflect on my first year serving as president of MDCA&CH, I am filled with gratitude and hope. From day one, it has been clear that this is a place where people come together with one purpose: to glorify Christ by loving others deeply and serving them with excellence. Whether it’s through our Academy, our Children’s Home, or our outreach to single-parent families, the mission here is alive and thriving. I’ve witnessed firsthand a campuswide effort to live out our calling with passion and purpose. One prayer has become the heartbeat of my leadership this year: “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray, and I’ve found myself returning to that sacred prayer over and over again. It’s not just a model for personal devotion; it’s a mission statement for us as a school and ministry. We want to see God’s kingdom alive on our campus, a place where students walk in faith, where families are restored with hope, and where love, grace, and truth are the atmosphere we breathe. Our goal is not just to educate minds but to transform hearts. We are working every day to raise up young people who will become faith-driven world changers — students who know who they are in Christ, who serve others selflessly, and who are equipped to lead with courage in whatever field to which God calls them. This past year has been full of progress and excitement. I look forward to sharing with you many of the projects we’ve launched, the incredible accomplishments of our students and teachers, and the inspiring new team members who have joined us to strengthen our mission. From academic growth and campus improvements to spiritual milestones and community impact, God has been at work among us. But none of this would be possible without people like you. The generosity and support we receive from churches, families, alumni, and friends are the foundation that allows us to dream big and serve well. Every dollar given helps us meet practical needs and offer spiritual hope to children, students, and families. As we look ahead to a new season at MDCA&CH, we are planning to create new spaces and launch new programs that will meet the needs of our growing community in even more meaningful ways. Would you prayerfully consider how you might be part of that journey? Whether through a one-time gift, a monthly donation, or a special contribution toward one of our upcoming projects, your financial support makes a direct and eternal impact. Most of all, we ask for your continued prayers for our students, our families, our faculty and staff, and wisdom as we look to the future with faith. Thank you for believing in the mission of Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home. Together, we are shaping lives for eternity and helping to bring a little more of heaven down here to earth. Dr. Sam Smith President, MDCA&CH

MISSION ACCEPTED:
Five MDCA seniors answer the call to lead, serve, and represent their faith at U.S. military academies
by Jenn Marcussen
It’s not every day that a high school
sends one student to a U.S. service academy, let alone five. But this year, Mount Dora Christian Academy’s Class of 2025 has done just that, with five graduates receiving appointments to some of the most elite and demanding military institutions in the country. For a senior class of just 56 students, this achievement is nothing short of extraordinary. Natalie Doan, Gabriella Llano, Zachary Opgenorth, Ethan Priest, and Nathan Roach have each earned appointments to one of the nation’s elite institutions: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Three will compete in NCAA athletics, football, basketball, and baseball, while pursuing demanding academic and military training. “This is not just a big moment for these students and their families, it’s historic for our school,” said MDCA President Dr. Sam Smith. “To have nearly 10 percent of our senior class earn admission to military academies speaks volumes 12
imagine | S U M M E R 2 0 2 5
about the caliber of our students and the Christcentered education they’ve received. They are servant leaders in the truest sense.” Few journeys are as challenging or selective as the path to a U.S. military service academy. The process includes congressional nominations, intense academic and physical requirements, and a demonstrated commitment to leadership and character. These five students not only met those standards but exceeded them, representing their school, families, and community with distinction and setting a powerful example for others to follow. Each of these seniors reflects the heart of MDCA’s mission: to educate, equip, and empower faithdriven world changers. Like the servant leaders of Scripture—David facing Goliath, Esther standing in courage, or Isaiah answering, “Here am I. Send me,” these students are stepping forward boldly into lives of service, trusting God with the path ahead. Their stories demonstrate what it means to lead with humility, serve with purpose, and walk in faith.
NATALIE DOAN
UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY (BASKETBALL)
Natalie has been part of the MDCA community for 10 years and has left a lasting impact through basketball, weightlifting, and track and field. She credits Athletics Administrative Assistant Elizabeth Knight as a guiding influence who consistently offered support and encouragement. Her favorite memories include the friendships and bonds formed through athletics. Natalie will attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to study marine engineering and play collegiate basketball. Favorite Bible Verse: Psalm 147:4 — “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.” Advice to Younger Students: “Be thankful for every moment in life.”
GABRIELLA LLANO
UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT
Gabriella has spent four years at MDCA, participating in cross-country, track, soccer, Beta Club, and YPC, and serving as a Teacher Assistant. She credits Dean of Academics Robin Leto with helping her discover her passion for leadership and service. Gabriella plans to major in computer science at West Point. Favorite Bible Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 — “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Advice to Younger Students: “Find your passion and set goals. Never lose sight of the Lord and the purpose He has for you.”

He says Athletic Director Megan Ziegelhofer has been a constant source of encouragement and accountability. Zachary’s favorite memories include winning four straight baseball district championships and building strong bonds with his teammates. He will study chemical engineering at West Point. Favorite Bible Verse: Micah 7:8 — “Do not rejoice over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will arise; though I sit in darkness, the LORD is my light.” Advice to Younger Students: “Truly be yourself and allow the Lord to light your path. Though there will be twists and turns, He will always be there to guide you.”
ETHAN PRIEST

Ethan’s favorite memories include the lessons learned and relationships formed through athletics. He will attend the Air Force Academy to study aeronautical engineering and play Division I baseball. Favorite Bible Verse: Romans 8:31 — “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Advice to Younger Students: “Fully embrace every moment and tackle every challenge that comes your way.”

NATHAN ROACH
UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY PREP SCHOOL (FOOTBALL)
In just two years at MDCA, Nathan made a significant impact as a leader on the football field and in the classroom. Active in FCA and Beta Club, he credits Head Football Coach Kolby Tackett for guiding him spiritually through the recruiting process. Nathan will attend West Point to play football and pursue a career in the U.S. Special Forces. Favorite Bible Verse: Isaiah 6:8 — “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” Advice to Younger Students: “Work hard and trust God.”
As MDCA celebrates its 80th anniversary, the accomplishments of the Class of 2025 serve as a living testimony to the school’s mission. These students are more than high achievers — they are examples of what it means to be rooted in faith and ready to lead.

Dr. Cassie McWhirt:
A Journey of Perseverance, Purpose, and Faith
BY J EN N M AR CUS S E N
When Cassie McWhirt crossed the stage to receive her
doctorate in occupational therapy from Faulkner University this spring, she wasn’t just completing a degree. No, that moment signified the closing of a chapter nearly a decade long, one filled with faith, resilience, and ultimately, trust in God’s plan for her life. McWhirt, a 2017 graduate of Mount Dora Christian Academy, spent more than 12 years as a student at the Academy. As the daughter of two longtime MDCA team members, Phil, elementary art teacher, and Sissy, housekeeping supervisor, she grew up in the heart of the Bulldog community. “MDCA was more than just my school; it was my extended family and a place that helped shape who I am today,” she said. While at MDCA, McWhirt was known for her creativity, determination, and heart for others. She was a seven-year member of the varsity girls bowling team, earning district championships and twice qualifying for the FHSAA state tournament. She was also involved in Beta Club, STEM Society, The Way, National Art Honors Society, and Girls Bible Study. Through her involvement, she developed a deep appreciation for the value of service and faith-based education. It was also at MDCA that a particular teacher helped guide her toward the path she would ultimately follow. “Laura Barker (secondary science teacher and BSI director) has known me since I was born,” McWhirt shared. “She inspired me in many ways to find my talents and skills in the medical field, and I greatly enjoyed learning in her biology and anatomy classes. She helped me to become more confident in myself and has always been a great godly influence on me.” McWhirt’s calling to occupational therapy began with her own experience. As a young child, she was on the receiving end of occupational therapy services. That early intervention became the inspiration for her life’s work. “To go from someone who was once receiving early intervention OT and other therapies during my early childhood to earning my doctorate was no easy accomplishment at all,” she said. “All of the odds that were against me eventually evened out.”
16
imagine | S U M M E R 2 0 2 5
After graduating from MDCA, McWhirt enrolled at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama, where she would spend nearly eight years earning both her undergraduate degree and her Doctor of Occupational Therapy. Midway through her studies, she sensed God calling her to stay longer than originally planned. After Faulkner announced the launch of its new College of Health Sciences, she saw it as confirmation to stay the course. Her time at Faulkner was filled with growth, challenges, and calling. McWhirt found strength in Scripture and often turned to verses to carry her through. Among her favorites are Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” She also holds tightly to 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” As part of her doctoral capstone, McWhirt worked with university leadership to design the Eagles Bridge Program, a proposed initiative that will serve college students with intellectual disabilities. She developed the admissions process and a full fouryear curriculum designed to teach independent living, employment readiness, interpersonal skills, and self-determination. “The main purposes of this program will be to educate these students on independent living skills, interpersonal skills, employment readiness, and selfdetermination,” she explained. “This will give students the opportunity to live more independently, have a better quality of life, and contribute to the economy and the community by working in paid positions.” Now back in Central Florida, McWhirt is preparing for the NBCOT board exam and applying for occupational therapy jobs near her hometown. She looks forward to rejoining her church family at Orange Avenue Church of Christ and continuing to serve others in the spirit of Christ. “Although this was not my original plan, I am excited, confident, and joyful that God is leading me in the right direction,” she said. “This doctorate was a longer route I took and is just part of my journey to keep serving the Lord,” she said. “It’s not the end, but only just the beginning.”

EQUIPPED TO HEAL : It’s not enough these days to simply
provide for the physical and educational needs of the children and families served by Mount Dora Children’s Home. New residents often arrive with traumas and hurts that go far deeper. As a result, the Children’s Home is growing its staff size and capabilities to meet all the challenges facing today’s residents.
Expanding Mental Health Services Kristina Scherer recently joined the Social Services team as MDCH’s first mental health therapist. She earned a Master of Science degree in clinical mental health counseling with a concentration in play therapy from Palm Beach Atlantic University. Her career background includes experience supporting families impacted by trauma, abuse, and neglect through her work at the Lake Sumter Children’s Advocacy Center. She also worked at the Live Well Foundation of South Lake and for Cornerstone Hospice. “We are thrilled to welcome Kristina to the Mount Dora Children’s Home to fill this position,” Chuck Shepherd, Vice President of Social Services said. “With her experience, Kristina offers compassionate, professional counseling rooted in Christian principles, helping children and families process trauma, build resilience, and develop healthy relationships. Her presence enhances our capacity to provide individualized support, ensuring every child and family receives guidance that integrates both clinical knowledge and faithbased encouragement.” Scherer said the Children’s Home gives her the opportunity to provide holistic counseling. “Since entering the job world, I’ve always known I want to help people, to care for people holistically,” she said. “At Mount Dora Children’s Home, I have the opportunity to incorporate faith and spiritual aspects as well. Traditionally, that’s something you don’t necessarily get to do with therapy.” Scherer will work with all MDCH residents, including teen girls in the group care program, single parents, and the children of single parents. She hopes to eventually expand her reach and be a resource for Mount Dora Christian Academy. “I like that I get to meet each client exactly where they are and provide a safe space for them to feel empowered enough to ask themselves hard questions and to seek out those answers.” The need for therapeutic counseling has never been greater. “The need is so great because we live in a fallen, broken world, and the stigma with trauma and how it should be dealt with still exists,” she said.

MDCH Strengthens Mental Health Support for Children and Families by Dave Hogan “We are expanding our services to better meet the growing mental health and spiritual needs of the children and families we serve,” said Chuck Shepherd, Vice President of Social Services. “We are committed to providing compassionate, individualized care that supports every journey toward healing, resilience, and hope.” This expansion includes the creation of MDCH’s first mental health therapist position and celebrating another staff member’s completion of a counseling degree.
“Expanding our services ensures that our children and families have access to early intervention coping strategies and emotional support, which are critical for healthy development and long-term well-being,” Shepherd said. “By expanding our services with these dedicated professionals, Mount Dora Children’s Home is responding to the real and pressing needs of our community and society.”
Earning a Christian Counseling Degree Further strengthening Social Services’ capabilities, a current staff member recently completed a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and Christian counseling. Elly Murfin, a case manager who joined the team in 2022, earned her degree from Liberty University. She also holds a degree in addiction counseling. “Elly’s achievement in earning her degree in Christian counseling is a remarkable milestone that brings both honor and practical benefit to Mount Dora Children’s Home,” Shepherd said. “Her advanced training in Christian counseling equips her with specialized skills to address the emotional and spiritual needs of children and families and aligns with MDCH’s mission to provide a nurturing, faith-based program.” While her immediate duties are not changing, Murfin said the courses she took in college are helping her deal more effectively with the teen girls she oversees at the Thompson House. “All the skills I learned in school, I use every day,” Murfin said, adding that the girls she counsels often are working to overcome phobias, anxieties, depression, and trauma. One thing that keeps her motivated in her job is getting to see these girls make progress. “It’s a huge thing to watch them grow and be able to overcome some of those challenges they have had for so long. It’s super rewarding and super exhausting emotionally, but the days that we have breakthroughs make up for all of that.” Murfin said MDCH’s supportive environment and Christian values make it the perfect place for her to work and to focus on helping students. “The culture here is something I haven’t found anywhere else. Every conversation is very intentional and Christ centered, and that’s something you’re not always able to do elsewhere.”

Celebrating a Future World Changer:
Madison Luckett by Tonja Rambow
Madison Luckett is a senior extraordinaire at
Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home! She is the daughter of Fidelta Bennett, a single parent and participant in the Mount Dora Children’s Home Single-Parent Program. She has attended MDCA since the sixth grade and graduated with honors in May 2025. Luckett demonstrated her love for science and people at a young age when she enrolled at MDCA to participate in the Biomedical Sciences Institute (BSI), the Academy’s innovative program that helps high school students prepare for careers in healthcare. Luckett relayed that her favorite classes were Biomedical Science and Leadership Strategies. In BSI, Luckett earned her white coat, a significant milestone in her academic pursuit of a medical career. While attending MDCA, Luckett maintained a continuous 4.0+ GPA and placement on the Principal’s List. She is also a regional science fair winner and the recipient of multiple scholarships: the East Winter Garden Community Development Corporation Scholarship, the Kennesaw State Out-of-State Scholarship, the Gamma Phi Delta Scholarship, the Mount Dora Children’s Home Scholarship, the 43rd Street Church of Christ Scholarship, the Boatman Scholarship, the Hank & Barbara Borg Scholarship, and the James & Jo Earnhardt Scholarship.
Luckett is a multitalented and well-rounded young woman. Her many interests propelled her positive influence and energetic spirit well beyond the classroom. She was involved in the Student Leadership Association, Beta Club, Culture Club, Girls for God, and The Way. She attends Orange Avenue Church of Christ and is active in the Jesus and Me (JAM) youth group at Ninth Street Church of Christ. She has also been a participant at Christian youth conferences and the Equip Conference for the past several years. In reminiscing about her achievements, Luckett shared that her mom and grandma have been her greatest inspirations. “Their love and sacrifices have shaped me into the person I am today,” she said. “Mount Dora Children’s Home has also had a positive impact on me academically and spiritually. They’ve helped invest in my future and instilled in me a foundation of faith that I will carry with me throughout my life.” After high school graduation, Luckett plans to attend Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, where she will major in pediatric occupational therapy. She would then like to pursue a master’s degree in nursing to ultimately work as a pediatric nurse practitioner, blending her passion for people and science as a “world changer” professional in service to children and families. The Joy of Giving
Join Us in Shaping Brighter Futures at Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home
Dear Friends, There’s something truly special about being part of a team united by a powerful purpose. Whether you’re a parent, an alum, a faithful donor, or a dedicated staff member, you are helping to shape a legacy, preparing young people not just for academic success, but for lives rooted in faith, character, and resilience in today’s ever-changing world. For 80 years, Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home has been a beacon of hope and opportunity. With more than 150 passionate employees, our vibrant campus is home to an award-winning Academy where more than 900 students thrive. An incredible 95 percent of our seniors are college bound, and an astonishing 10 percent have been accepted into one of our nation’s military academies! But our mission goes far beyond academics. At the heart of our Children’s Home is a deep commitment to breaking the cycle of hardship for families in need and leading them to Christ. Our residential program offers loving houseparents for girls, and our successful singleparent initiative provides free services for 10 families and 22 children. What sets us apart is our holistic approach: We nurture both child and parent, offering not just shelter and food, but also spiritual guidance, education, counseling, and essential life skills. Thanks to the grace of God and the unwavering support of friends like you, 2025 has been a year of remarkable growth and generosity. As of June 1, we can celebrate the following:

s I am preparing to retire as Vice President of Social Services at Mount Dora Children’s Home, my heart is filled with gratitude, reflection, and hope. It is difficult to find the words to adequately express what this journey has meant to me, but I wish to share a few thoughts as I bid farewell to a place and people who have profoundly shaped my life. When I first arrived at Mount Dora Children’s Home, I was drawn by its mission: A Christ-centered haven for children and families in need, anchored in the belief that every child is a gift from God, made in His image, and deserving of a good start in life. I am filled with gratitude for the countless memories, milestones, and relationships that have defined my journey here. Together, we have provided hope, stability, and love to so many lacking these. We have seen countless children and families find healing and a brighter future. I am deeply grateful to the dedicated staff who have worked tirelessly to fulfill our mission. Their unwavering commitment, compassion, and professionalism to the children and families we serve inspired me every day. Thank you for your support, your friendship, and your shared vision for the well-being of every person who walked through our doors. Working alongside my staff has been one of the greatest honors of my life. To the children and families who have been part of our programs, thank you for trusting me with your stories and allowing me to walk alongside you in your journeys. You have inspired me with your resilience and courage. It has been a privilege to share moments of laughter, tears, and growth and to see you overcome challenges. To our community partners, churches, and individual donors, your generosity has made an immeasurable impact. Your belief in our mission has made our work possible. Your gifts and prayers have changed lives, built futures, and created a legacy of kindness that will endure long after my retirement. Your belief in our cause has empowered us to reach hundreds
of children and families, helping them discover their Godgiven talents and thrive as individuals. Your support has made it possible for Mount Dora Children’s Home to offer spiritual guidance and ensure our children and families have the opportunity to discover God’s teachings. Through changing times and evolving challenges, our commitment to providing loving, biblically based care has remained unshaken. You have truly made a difference in the world, and I am deeply grateful and humbled by your trust and partnership over the years. Our community partners, churches, and individual donors have truly embodied the spirit of service that defines Mount Dora Children’s Home. The seeds you have sown through your kindness and faithfulness will continue to bear fruit for generations. Every success, every milestone, and every transformed life at Mount Dora Children’s Home is a testament to your compassion and commitment to Christ’s work. When I first walked through the doors 37 years ago, I could not have imagined the journey ahead. I thought I had all the answers. I thought changing the lives of those in need would be so easy! I quickly learned that changing lives is not as straightforward as it might seem. The meaningful connections with staff, children, and families have left an indelible mark on me, helping me to have a better understanding of empathy, resilience, compassion, and love. It has been a profound privilege contributing to Mount Dora Children’s Home for nearly half of the agency’s remarkable 80-year historical journey. I know it will be in good hands under the leadership of incoming Vice President of Social Services Garrett Schwarz and our outstanding staff. I will cherish the memories, the lessons learned, and the love shown toward me and my family for the rest of my life. Please keep in touch, and may God bless each of you and the ongoing work of Mount Dora Children’s Home.
Blessings and Thanks to all,
Chuck Shepherd Vice President of Social Services
