Welcome
to Mount Athos Area, Chalkidiki! Welcome to a place so rich in flavours and wine indulgences, as its history! A place with famous vineyards, renowned wineries and dozens of traditional „tsipourokazana“ (i.e. distillation tanks for the production of tsipouro) both within and outside of the Monastic Community, but also with large tradition in the production of well-known wines and strong „wine flavours“! Ever since the era of Aristotle and up to the times of the Mademochoria, from the most southern part of Mount Athos to the mountainous Arnea, Megali Panagia and Gomati, people drink wine in every occasion: in feasts, in happiness, in celebrations, in grief, in sorrow and in pain. This guide will provide you with all necessary information for a thematic visit to the area throughout the year, in order to try our wines, celebrate their flavour, aroma and allure, and indulge in pleasure and euphoria!

The Mount Athos Area is famous for wine-tourism and its wine production! The blessed land of Mount Athos, the fertile plains of Marathousa, the vines of Gomati and Megali Panagia... These are the ingredients of the unique wines, renowned both within and outside of the Holy Peninsula, blessed by the same divine hand! The place lives and breathes in the rhythm of wine, which is the epicentre of the people’s everyday lives! From the end of hot August -when the blessed crops are picked one-by-one by hand- until Christmas -when the rich harvest is finally bottled- the place celebrates every single day! LIVADIOTIS estate and winery is located in the heart of beautiful Marathousa, a couple of kilometres away from Arnea. It is a traditional farm, full of cottages (residential), including a private stud farm. Wines are made with organic vines and they are really tasty. Tsipouro is characterized by rich aromas. That‘s how hard working people prefer it!

A winery-ornament of Mount Athos Area! The winery is located in Arnea, the most traditional town of mountainous Chalkidiki, and it is harmonically integrated in the area: stone-built outside, modern and fully equipped inside. 120,000 bottles of wine are produced on a yearly basis. The estate owns 10 labels, most of which are award-winning and renowned both in Greece and abroad! Metochi Chromitsa Agios Panteleimon Monastery Mount Athos
Russian monks have been cultivating vineyards, olive trees, wheat and orchards in the Chromitsa dependency since the 14th century... In Russian „Chromitsa“ means nurse. The Metochi was renamed to Chromitsa Metochi because it was the main provider of wine, oil, bread and vegetables for the monastery of Agios Panteleimonas. In 1973 Evangelos Tsantalis found refugee in the Chromitsa Metochi during a fierce storm. Noticing the abandoned vines in the untouched nature, he proposed to the Monastery‘s Abbot to cultivate those vines and he asked for permission to use them for the production of wine. In this way „agioritiko“ wine reached the outer world, providing the basis for the beginning of a large tradition!

ACTIVITIES Arrival Just 90 minutes after landing at MACEDONIA airport in Thessaloniki you will be in the area of Mount Athos. Choose your favourite place to stay from 8,500 beds, 56 hotels, 250 rooms to let and 20 agrotourism lodgings; whatever suits you best! After your check in, you can enjoy lunch or dinner at your hotel, depending on the time of arrival.

Livadiotis Estate

ACTIVITIES Livadiotis Estate Right after breakfast, begin your tour in the area’s wine roads. Visit “Livadiotis Estate” in Marathousa and get the chance to try organic wines and watch the traditional process of producing tsipouro in the estate’s distillery. In September you will have the opportunity to attend the “vintage feast”, while in regular intervals from October until Christmas you can enjoy yourselves in the “feasts of tsipouro” organized by the estate owner. You should certainly try “tsompaniko”, the delicious local white cheese, in combination with traditional fresh hand-baked wood oven bread, as well as the locally produced hand-made aromatic sausages. Before you leave the estate, why not take a horse ride around the farm and the picturesque paths of the fertile plains! In the evening you can have dinner at the traditional restaurant “Bakatsianos”, in the small wood of Agia Paraskevi, and then wander in the stonepaved allays of Arnea (standing out for its unique architecture) or visit the folklore/textile museum of the area and the Holy Metropolis of Agios Stefanos to get a glimpse of the rare findings shining under the glass floor! Later in the evening you can return to the hotel and relax with some local wine or tsipouro. Enjoy with a rich mezze platter!

Claudia Papayianni Estate
ACTIVITIES Claudia Papayianni Estate Today you are going to visit the winery of “Claudia Papayianni Estate” in Arnea. You will be guided around exceptionally designed spaces and you will try the twelve award-winning labels of the estate in the winery’s magnificent cellar. In September you can take part in the vintage and, if you visit the estate in a group, you can participate in the revival of a “dionysian festival” organized at the winery - a unique tourist experience. Alternatively, you can have lunch at the traditional restaurant “Bakatsianos”, in the small wood of Agia Paraskevi, and then visit the town and enjoy a cup of coffee at the traditional square or in one of the traditional guest houses. Don’t forget to buy honey. It is produced locally and stands out for its quality. While having dinner at the hotel, ask for Claudia Papayianni wine to accompany your meal or snack.

ACTIVITIES Mount Athos Right after breakfast, go to the port of Ouranoupoli and catch the ferry to the port of Dafni in Mount Athos make sure you have acquired a pilgrim’s pass (for more information about the issuance, visit our website www. mountathosarea.org). You will visit the Seat of Agios Efstathios in the Holy Monastery of Megisti Lavra, in Mylopotamos, and you will attend the process of producing “agioritiko” wine in the Monastery’s winery. You can also visit other monasteries located very close to Mylopotamos, experience the “culture” of Mount Athos and feel the spirituality and fulfilment. Alternatively, you can visit the Agios Nikolaos dependency of the Holy Monastery of Agios Pavlos, take a tour at the monastery’s exceptional vineyards and try their renowned wines, or visit the Chromitsa dependency, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy the picturesque vineyards around the Chromitsa dependency of the Holy Monastery of Agios Panteleimonas and try “agioritiko” wine produced with organic local and international vine varieties! You will spend the night at the guest room of the Monastery you will choose. Women may not participate in this visit, but they can see all monasteries of the western side from the cruise ship of Athos Sea Cruises and try “agioritiko” wine in Ouranoupoli, where they can have lunch at Kritikos Gallery & Restaurants and taste authentic recipes from Mount Athos.

ACTIVITIES Local “rakokazana” (raki distilleries) Upon arrival of the men in Ouranoupoli (at noon), you will head towards Gomati, where you will visit the traditional “tsipourokazana” (tsipouro distillation tanks) of the village and try the authentic unique local tsipouro. After that, you will have dinner at the traditional farm “Platanorema”, where you will be served organic meat and house-pies prepared by Mrs. Anna and baked at your presence in the farm’s wood oven! Finish your day there with good wine and tsipouro, and entertain yourselves “the Greek way”, dancing in the sounds of the local traditional musical instruments! Thessaloniki After breakfast you will depart for the city of flavours and aromas, the nearby Thessaloniki!
