n our mountain foodie mecca, the simple question of where to grab a bite to eat can present a sticky dilemma: In Asheville, you can’t swing a cat — or even one of Biscuit Head’s cathead biscuits (Best Biscuits) — without hitting a top-notch eatery.

But Xpress readers must find dining decisions to be a tasty quandary. Although new restaurants keep popping up like wild, edible mushrooms — including expansions of established favorites like white Duck taco (Best Value, Best Quick Meal, Best Cheap Lunch, Best Taco and third-place Best Outdoor Dining) and Green Sage café (Best Green/SustainabilityFriendly Restaurant and third-place Healthiest Restaurant) — many Xpress readers say they are still clamoring for more.

In a repeat of the Best of 2013, the top three Restaurants Still Needed in Asheville are ethiopian, authentic Chinese and Vietnamese. Addissae, set to open soon on Commerce Street, should help satisfy the long-held craving for Ethiopian, but overall, votes in the category noted a staggering variety of unmet culinary desires.

So aspiring restaurateurs take note: WNC hungers for everything from dim sum to a Jewish deli. While some hanker for Peruvian or Paleo fare, there are others who would just like a good vegan pizza. And while we can’t condone the approach of the voter who “would strangle so many hobos for a decent dumpling in this town,” we do appreciate the depth of the local passion for excellent cuisine. — Gina Smith X

t a glance, the Best of WNC winners in the drinks section can read a bit like the beer menu of your dreams. Would you rather have the wedge’s iron Rail iPa (Best Local IPA), a Pisgah [brewing co.] Pale ale (Best Local Beer) or asheville brewing co.’s ninja Porter (Best Local Dark Beer)?

But the truth is, our favorite beers are only part of what makes Asheville’s beer scene one of the best in the nation. The bars also do their part. barley’s taproom & Pizzeria sticks to the classics with pizza, darts, and pool — oh, and the Best Local Beer Selection, of course. And the bywater earns the title of Best Locals Bar, thanks to its unique combination of riverside seating, live music and grill-your-own barbecue stations. (It also doesn’t hurt that you can kayak or float the French Broad to get there, rather than drive.)

Outside the realm of alcohol, West Asheville’s battlecat coffee bar (Best Evening Coffee House) keeps our standards for espresso high even as it launches a brand-new roasting company, Penny Cup, and Dobra‘s double win (Best Place to Drink Tea and Best Coffee/Tea House in Which to Read a Book) is a good reminder to stop in and sample some of its annual August tea-season arrivals from India, Japan and China.

The mountains-to-Sea trail (Best Hiking Trail) takes about 2,112,000 steps to complete, connecting a 1,000-mile route from Jockey’s Ridge State Park on the Outer Banks to Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Gearing up for such a trek requires planning and good equipment — all in great supply in WNC, but the winner of Best Outdoor-Gear Shop (Diamond brand) gets kudos for being a stitch ahead.

Founded in 1881, the outfitter manufactured the first official Boy Scouts of America backpacks.

Launched about a century later but well before the outdoor industry had expanded to all corners of WNC, the nantahala outdoor center (Best Paddle/Kayak/Rafting Equipment Company) now has three locations, whitewater rafting on seven rivers, dining at three restaurants and a boatload more for water lovers.

Another Hall of Fame winner, Liberty bicycles (Best Bike Shop) owes its success to the passion and dedication of owners Claudia and Mike Nix, who have long advocated for cycling as part of a multimodal universe (they were granted the Bicycle Advocacy of the Year award in 2007 by Bicycle Retailer & Industry News Magazine and locally, they’ve helped craft transportation plans that accommodate cyclists, like bike lanes on key routes in the city.

For those who like their adventures even simpler — with the reward of hot chocolate and raising money for a local PTO, there’s the Hot chocolate 10K and Kids Hill climb, voted the Best Foot Race this year. The January event races money for the Isaac Dickson Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization, and, as several participants have noted, “it’s the flattest course you can run in Asheville.” — Erik Peake X

ore and more workers are trading in their white- or bluecollar jobs for ones with a greener tint — especially when they can start their own business.

Dave and Sierra Hollister started Sundance Power Systems (Best Alt-Energy Sales & Installation) based on their belief in self-reliant lifestyles and energy-consciousness. The idea (and the business) grew too big for their solar-powered mountain home and became one of the largest renewable energy firms in the Southeast.

Leslie Ellis, meanwhile, started Green Home cleaning in 2006 with the idea of being her own boss. Research took her further: She decided the company would take a green approach to cleaning homes. “I did a lot of research and realized the effect the products [commonly] used were having on people and their homes,” Ellis says. So she shifted to natural products. “Using typical products, the inside of a home can be more toxic that the outside environment,” Ellis explains.

Similarly, the number of green builders continues to rise in the region, home to the WNC Green Building Council, which got its start in 2000 when five environmentally conscious building professionals first got together to discuss how they could produce energy-efficient, comfortable, healthy homes. This year, Asheville Homebuilders Association president Christopher Fox’s company, christopher fox builders, was named Best Green Builder.

We’ll also note that — while the U.S. Department of Labor has trouble counting the self-employed (it calculates a 2.6 percent rise in the number of jobs associated with green goods and services since 2011, but notes that the self-employed aren’t counted in this figure) — our Best Of voters named so many noteworthy entrepreneurs in the region that we can only conclude that the entrepreneurial spirit runs strong in WNC. — Grady Cooper X mountainx.com

hen it comes to local news stories, readers are fired up about coal ash. With more attention on the issue after a February spill on the Dan River in North Carolina, coal ash was voted the year’s Most Important Local News Story. And apparently coverage hasn’t kept up with the increasing demand for information on the subject, as voters also declared it the Most Under-Reported Story.

A flood of ballots also demonstrated that the ongoing battle over control of Asheville’s water system and the effort to clean up contamination surrounding the former CTS plant in Arden are issues that weigh heavily on readers minds.

But this year’s results also revealed ongoing interest in a wide range of other topics. ashvegas continues its reign as the Best Local Blog, Best Local Website and founder Jason Sandford as Best Social Media Personality by focusing on what he calls “rumors of news” about everything from local movie star sightings and restaurant openings to buzzing community debates.

Next year will be the site’s 10th anniversary, and Sandford says he’s “incredibly grateful for everyone — everyone — who has participated along the way.”

On the radio dial, voters continue to tune into wncw 88.7 (Best Local Radio Station), giving the public broadcaster high marks as it celebrates its 25th anniversary this fall. Music Director Martin Anderson credits “a community of fellow music fans who like such a wide variety of styles —bluegrass, jazz, Americana, classic rock, indie rock, and twice as many other styles.”

Meanwhile, readers also continued to show love to several Xpress staffers, including alli marshall, who enters the Hall of Fame this year for being voted best Local Print Arts Reporter four years in a row. “I have one of the most fun jobs in Asheville — I get to talk to artists of all genres about the creative process and what it means to make art,” says Marshall.

estern North Carolina’s tailgate markets, roadside stands and CSAs are bucking a statewide trend: Instead of falling sales, they’ve experienced a 69 percent increase in the last few years, based on U.S. Department of Agriculture data. Considering we’re a horticultural community full of community gardens, family farms and enthusiastic homesteaders, this doesn’t surprise us or our readers. Asheville is a certified Tree City USA, the original Bee City USA, and home to the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project.

What’s more, WNC contains one of the country’s most diverse foodsheds.

The folks at ASAP discovered that the number of tailgate markets in the region has more than tripled in the last decade and local food sales have risen from $17 million in 2007 to $170 million last year. In addition to supporting local growers, a good many of you took on your own homesteading projects last year. According to Natalie Pollard, owner of Villagers (winner for Best Homesteading/Supply Shop), home fermentation and chemicalfree gardening were popular activities last year, but the most noticeable trend was an increased interest in apiaries.

“I have seen a lot of new backyard beekeepers coming in, and I think that’s because we have an increased awareness about the health of our honey bee population,” Pollard says.
