Take your pick

With its unconventional character, dramatic landscape, historically remarkable architecture and eclectic cultural offerings, Asheville has attracted a broad — and, at times, irreverent — range of nicknames since the railroad arrived in Western North Carolina in the 1880s, opening a gateway for visitors.

Over the decades, Asheville has blossomed into a thriving city of 95,000 — and a popular travel destination. Gifted with more than the usual share of colorful characters, innovative thinkers and enterprising trailblazers, the city has also earned a reputation as a resilient, creative and independent community that fosters a strong collaborative spirit.

In September 2024, Tropical Storm Helene brought unprecedented tragedy and destruction to Western North Carolina, submerging some of Asheville’s most beloved neighborhoods under, in some cases, nearly 30 feet of river water, knocking out municipal water service for months and creating immense economic challenges for the area’s businesses. However, tapping into its tough and resourceful mountain roots, the city has been tenaciously working to rise from the mud.

Visitors are key to that revival. During your time in Asheville, know that your enjoyment of local businesses is exactly what’s needed to help this scrappy little city get back on its feet.

And please take special care to visit neighborhoods that experienced severe flooding during Helene, including Biltmore Village and the River Arts District. As those areas fight to rebuild and reopen, the support and love of visitors have never meant more.

The cover for this year's Field Guide is a watercolor painting by local artist Sue Dolamore. Titled “A Broad Perspective,” Dolamore painted the piece in 2024 as part of a River Arts District Association challenge to create original artwork based on the theme “expanding horizons.”

“The painting captures both the literal and metaphorical journey of gaining a new perspective, symbolizing a departure from everyday life and a celebration of boundless possibility,” Dolamore says about the work.

Dolamore and her family relocated to Western North Carolina in 2011 from Central Florida. “I wanted mountains. My husband missed the woods,” she says. The couple was also seeking a place with a small city and a vibrant arts community. “Asheville suited all three: culture, mountains and woodlands,” Dolamore says.

Self-taught, Dolamore embarked on her creative journey in 2014, following her youngest daughter's graduation. She immersed herself in painting, fostering a thriving plein air community that grew from a dozen to nearly 400 members.

Her workspace in Warehouse Studios at 170 Lyman St. in the River Arts District reopened in May 2025 after experiencing flooding from Tropical Storm Helene. Hours are Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., or by appointment. Learn more about the artist at www.suedolamore.com.

THINGS TO KNOW FAQ s

WEATHER?

Asheville’s climate can be wet or dry, often both in the same hour! Our hottest month is typically July, with highs in the mid 80s. In summer, temperatures will dip to the 50s and 60s at night. The coldest time is January, typically dropping into the teens and 20s at night, and rising above freezing in the daytime. Some of our forests average more than 80 inches of rain each year. Meanwhile, downtown Asheville usually doesn’t exceed 40 inches of rain annually.

WHERE CAN I PARK?

Downtown Asheville has thousands of parking spaces with onstreet parking, lots, decks and garages. Visit Buncombe County’s webpage at avl.mx/6si, or Asheville’s page at avl.mx/b8t for a map of downtown deck locations, pricing information and a mobile app that tells you where vacancies are.

• Street meters take coins, credit cards or the Passport Parking mobile app 8 a.m-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Parking is free after 6 p.m., and on Sundays and holidays.

• Most meters and all garages accept credit cards.

• City parking garages are free for less than an hour or $2 per hour. County-owned garages are $2 for the first hour and $1 for each additional hour.

WHERE CAN I FIND A PUBLIC RESTROOM?

There are facilities at Pack Square Park, and there are restrooms inside the Page Avenue entrance of the Grove Arcade, available 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday. Pack Library has restrooms in its outer hallway. There’s a 24/7 public facility on the corner of Rankin Avenue and College Street.

WHERE AND WHEN CAN I BUY BEER, CIDER, WINE AND LIQUOR?

Packaged liquor is only sold at ABC stores, typically 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday- Saturday. Beer, cider and wine are sold in groceries. Restaurants, bars and breweries can legally offer drinks seven days a week. Alcohol sales at bars and retail stores close at 2 a.m. Distilleries can sell alcohol on premises in limited quantities.

WHAT ARE NORTH CAROLINA’S TOBACCO, VAPING AND MARIJUANA LAWS?

State law prohibits smoking inside bars and restaurants. Smoking and e-cigarettes are banned on city buses, in city-owned parks, and in buildings owned by the city (except in designated areas). Medical and recreational marijuana use is outlawed in North Carolina (except for on the Qualla Boundary). However, delta 8 and 9 products are legal and readily available.

HOW DOG-FRIENDLY IS ASHEVILLE?

Dogs must be leashed by law, but they are welcome on most hiking trails, at some restaurants, stores and breweries and on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate. The area has several dog parks (where they can be unleashed in some areas), including at businesses, such as WagWorld, WagBar and Sweeten Creek Brewing, and at some public parks, including Buncombe Sports Park. There are also a few dogtreat bakeries in town as well as doggie day care centers. Dogs may be prohibited at festivals and special events — check before going.

Cats get their due on the Asheville Cat Weirdos Facebook page. The House of Black Cat Magic is a kitty paradise in West Asheville, while Cats at Play Café downtown offers purrs and lattes.

IS THERE A DISCOUNT CARD/BOOK FOR AREA ATTRACTIONS AND DINING?

Go Local Asheville offers a discount card (golocalasheville.com) which includes over 600 locally owned shops, bars, restaurants, and businesses. The Asheville Independent Restaurant Association’s annual AIR Passport offers deals at over 40 participating local restaurants.

WHERE IS THE VISITOR CENTER?

The Asheville Visitor Center (36 Montford Ave., just north of the bridge over I-240) has friendly folks to assist with questions, plus brochures and maps pertaining to attractions. The center is open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

IS ASHEVILLE ADA COMPLIANT?

Asheville aims to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, but the city has to contend with older infrastructure and hilly terrain. There are many individual buildings and businesses with exemptions. Keep in mind that downtown sidewalks are often narrow with obstacles, and some have steep inclines.

THINGS TO KNOW

HOW DO I GET A TABLE AT ASHEVILLE’S MOST POPULAR RESTAURANTS?

Reserve well in advance, either by calling or booking online, to eat at nationally renowned restaurants. Remember that weekdays are less busy. Asheville also has many amazing lesser-known places to eat. Check the Eats & Drinks listings in this publication for ideas!

HOW CAN I GET AROUND WITHOUT MY CAR?

Most of downtown is walkable, but hilly. Luckily, there are taxis, ride apps and Asheville Regional Transit (ART) public buses run by the city of Asheville. There are rental services for bikes and cars, and some hotels offer shuttle service. Gray Line Asheville has a hop-on-hop-off trolley option.

WHAT ARE ASHEVILLE’S SISTER CITIES?

Asheville has a Sister Cities program with seven partners: Vladikavkaz (Russia), San Cristóbal de las Casas (Mexico), Saumur (France), Karpenisi (Greece), Valladolid (Mexico), Osogbo (Nigeria) and Dunkeld-Birnam (Scotland).

WHERE CAN I FIND A CALENDAR OF EVENTS?

Festivals, concerts, sports competitions, dances and more are happening in and around Asheville year-round. Visit Mountain Xpress’ avlcalendar.com for a comprehensive listing of events each week. For a quick look at some of the year’s biggest events, check out the Festivals section in this guide.

THINGS TO DO

OUTSIDE

The term “great outdoors” takes on a grander meaning in Western North Carolina, where ancient mountains preside over wild rivers, waterfalls, forests and farms. Within and around the urban heart of Asheville, opportunities abound to explore the area’s natural beauty through driving, hiking, biking, climbing, swimming, boating and so much more.

IMPORTANT: As recovery continues from Tropical Storm Helene, many outdoor spaces remain significantly damaged, causing issues with accessibility, logistics and safety. Please check in advance online or by phone to confirm the status of outdoor destinations before visiting and pay attention to signs posted in recreational areas regarding storm damage.

Hit the road: Stretching 469 miles from its start in Virginia to its end in Cherokee, the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) national park site makes it simple to enjoy the grandeur of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the comfort of an automobile with numerous Asheville access points. Post-Helene, however, many sections of the scenic roadway are closed for repairs. For updates and a map of current closures, visit avl.mx/en9. (Note that parts of the BRP at higher elevations routinely close for weather during late fall, winter and early spring.)

ASHEVILLE BY BIKE

• Mountain bikers are in their element at spots like Berm Park at Chestnut Mountain Nature Park, DuPont State Forest, Bent Creek Experimental Forest and the Big Ivy route in Pisgah National Forest (for experts only).

• Bikers of all ages and skill levels and interests can find their groove on the trails, pump tracks, skills park, dirt jump zone, berm and more at The Adventure Center of Asheville’s Kolo Bike Park.

• If urban cruising is more your speed, book a downtown e-bike tour with a local company (see “Tours” section) or choose your own adventure with a rental from Sky E-Bikes, Asheville E-Bikes, The Flying Bike and others.

TAKE A HIKE

• Blue Ridge Hiking Co. founder Jennifer Pharr Davis literally wrote the book on hiking: Five-Star Trails Asheville: 35 Spectacular Hikes in the Land of the Sky offers detailed trail options, tips and advice for hikers of all levels. (Remember to check online sources for the status of trails post-Helene before embarking on a hike.)

• A popular option just outside Asheville is the nearly 5-mile Lunch Rocks hike on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. So named for a rocky, picnic-friendly overlook along the trail that provides a sweeping view of the Haw Creek Valley, the hike conveniently departs from the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

• The Blue Ridge Parkway tops many visitors’ lists for hiking opportunities. Though many sections and destinations are closed indefinitely due to Helene, including Mount Mitchell State Park, open sections near Asheville can provide excellent options for easy park-and-hike adventures. Look for updates and a map of current closures at avl.mx/en9.

• The small town of Hot Springs is on the Appalachian Trail (AT) and a jumping-off place for tackling the rigorous 1.6-mile Lover’s Leap and Appalachian Trail Loop or 5-mile round trip to the Rich Mountain Fire Tower. Check for post-Helene updates from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy at avl.mx/ena.

• Just a few minutes from downtown, the N.C. Arboretum offers 10 miles of marked, dogfriendly trails for all ages and abilities, many of which connect with areas such as Lake Powhatan and Pisgah National Forest.

THINGS TO DO

WATER FEATURES

• About 40 miles from Asheville, Sliding Rock Recreation Area in Pisgah National Forest features a 60-foot natural waterslide that ends in an 8-foot-deep pool of bracingly cool water.

• Post-Helene repairs continue at popular Catawba Falls in nearby Old Fort, but the 4-mile loop trail is open, and the falls are accessible for viewing. About an hour’s drive from Asheville, DuPont State Recreational Forest has multiple waterfalls to visit, including the stunning Bridal Veil Falls

• Though Tropical Storm Helene caused catastrophic damage along WNC’s rivers, some local outfitters — Zen Tubing, Beer City Tubing, Asheville Adventure Co. and Blue Heron Whitewater in nearby Marshall, to name a few — are beginning to reopen to provide opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, tubing and other paddling and floating escapades. For beer-loving multitaskers, Cedar Rock Adventures offers brewery crawls by canoe and raft.

• Less than an hour from Asheville, Lake James State Park is known for its excellent largemouth bass fishing, while waterways in Pisgah National Forest can be great spots for catching rainbow, brook and brown trout. Numerous local businesses, such as Asheville Fly Fishing Co., offer fishing expeditions to suit every skill level and interest.

URBAN ADVENTURES

• Asheville has multiple options for folks who want to explore the outdoors without ever leaving the city. Buncombe County

currently has a dozen individual sections of urban greenway in and around Asheville, ranging in length from less than a quarter-mile to nearly 3 miles. (Visit the Connect Buncombe website at avl.mx/eo4 to pick your next walking, biking or skating destination and for updates on sections damaged or closed due to Helene.)

• Public parks in Asheville and Buncombe County offer much more than playgrounds and picnic shelters. Amenities ranging from a splash pad (Pack Square Park) to disc golf, paddle boats and a fishing lake (Lake Julian Park). Visit the county (avl.mx/49b) and city (/avl.mx/6xa) park services websites for locations and updates on storm-related closures.

• For a two-hour stroll through Asheville’s history, hop on the 1.7-mile downtown Asheville Urban Trail. The self-guided walking tour follows 30 sculptural markers detailing famous residents (physician Elizabeth Blackwell, Thomas Wolfe, F. Scott Fitzgerald and O. Henry), art deco architecture, Black history, Appalachian heritage, Cherokee roots, commerce, transportation and more.

OUTSIDE THINGS TO DO

UP IN THE AIR

• Zip lining is a popular off-the-ground activity in the mountains around Asheville. Businesses like Navitat, The Adventure Center of Asheville and Nantahala Outdoor Center offer treetop and mountaintop flights of varying lengths, speeds and heights.

• Interested in literally climbing the walls? The climbing-curious can get started with introductory packages and day passes at Cultivate Climbing. For outdoor rock and ice climbing expeditions, Fox Mountain Guides & Climbing School, Pisgah Climbing School and Guillard Climbing offer a range of options.

ON THE FARM

IMPORTANT: Before heading out on your WNC agriculture adventure, be sure to contact the farms or consult their websites and social media for hours of operation, reservations and other important details.

• Support hardworking mountain farmers and treat yourself to a tasty adventure by bringing home goodies from favorite Asheville-area farm stands and u-pick operations, such as Flying Cloud Farm and Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fairview, Sycamore Valley Farm Store just west of the city or Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard in North Carolina’s apple country, Henderson County.

• To immerse yourself in rural mountain life, choose from a wide variety of Asheville-area farmstay options. A search of vacation rental websites can yield experiences ranging from horse and chicken meet-and-greets to goat yoga to u-pick berry and flower excursions. Accommodations, from yurts to historic inns, can be as rustic or upscale as you like.

• Farm tours and on-farm educational activities are fun ways to see where our food comes from. From hands-on beekeeping experiences at Honeybee Bliss to guided cheese tours and tastings at Looking Glass Creamery, WNC farms offer countless unforgettable learning experiences.

• Hop in the car or on a bike and follow a local self-guided agricultural trail to view gorgeous mountain scenery while visiting farms and sampling their products. The Farm Heritage Trail through northwest Buncombe County features stops at family-owned vegetable farms, wineries, herb nurseries, a bison farm and more (avl.mx/eob). The WNC Cheese Trail provides a map and information on area creameries as well as details on cheese-related events, including the annual Carolina Mountain Cheese Fest (avl.mx/eoc).

• To find WNC farms and learn more about how you can visit and support them, check out the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project’s (ASAP) Local Food Guide (and Farm Tour every September) at avl.mx/81y.or download the Visit NC Farms app at avl.mx/eod.

SHOPPING THINGS TO DO

Asheville’s retail aesthetic mirrors its general personality — imaginative, unique and free-spirited. From locally made artwork and crafts to one-of-a-kind fashions, jewelry, antiques, books, food products and much more, the city’s downtown and other busy neighborhoods are packed with independently owned shops and boutiques full of gems just waiting to be discovered, bought and popped into your shopping bag.

The Go Local Asheville guide is a printed and online directory with discounts on goods and services at hundreds of Asheville businesses; a Go Local card is $25 and delivers discounts on goods and services.

DOWNTOWN

All of downtown is fair game for fantastic retail finds. Pro tip: Though the main thoroughfares and areas noted below teem with tantalizing storefronts, don’t miss out on exploring the quiet side streets and less traveled corners where you’ll find some of the city’s best-kept shopping secrets.

• Tree-lined Lexington Avenue — long considered by locals to be the heart of Asheville’s “keep it weird” vibe — is a good place to find vintage boutiques, used books, mineral and crystal shops, hippie clothing stores and quirky gift shops mingling with contemporary fashion stores and trendy bars and eateries.

• Broadway and Biltmore Avenue merge at Pack Square, forming downtown’s main artery. Fashion boutiques, a midcentury modern furniture store, pastry shops, handmade artisan chocolate purveyors and art galleries are just a few of the retail attractions to be found.

• Covering an entire city block, the elegant, art deco Grove Arcade is worth a visit just to appreciate its grand architecture. Conveniently, it’s also a shopping hot spot with a furniture store, yarn shop, baby boutique, handbuilt musical instrument shop, huge used bookstore, spice merchant and much more all under one roof, along with a number of restaurants, a craft beer taproom and even a Champagne bar.

• Lovers of local arts and crafts won’t want to miss stopping at Woolworth Walk and Kress Emporium, two historic buildings repurposed into indoor shopping malls showcasing the work of Western North Carolina artists and crafters as well as some vintage collectibles.

BILTMORE VILLAGE

Long known as one of Asheville’s most charming and walkable shopping areas, historic Biltmore Village was devastated by catastrophic flooding during Tropical Storm Helene in September 2024. Most of the neighborhood’s cafés, shops and galleries suffered heavy damage and were closed due to the disaster, but many scrappy businesses are busy rebuilding, with some anticipating reopening dates in late spring and summer 2025. When visiting the Biltmore Estate, take a few extra minutes to drive through Biltmore Village and along the Swannanoa River and stop in to support any shops taking the leap to once again hang out their “open” signs. Visit the Historic Biltmore Village association’s website (avl.mx/er0) for updates on reopenings.

THINGS TO DO

RIVER ARTS DISTRICT

The River Arts District (RAD) — the heart of Asheville’s arts and crafts community — also experienced epic flooding during Helene, wiping out many of the neighborhood’s working studios, galleries and shops. But here, again, the arts community is working hard to rebuild. Many galleries and other businesses have reopened in upper parts of the RAD, including on Depot and Roberts streets and on Clingman Avenue, and the enormous, warehouselike Marquee arts and design market is projecting an early summer 2025 reopening. And, at least temporarily, visitors can also support storm-impacted RAD artists by shopping at the River Arts District Artists Association’s post-Helene outpost at 24 N. Lexington Ave. downtown. For updates, visit avl.mx/eat.

HAYWOOD ROAD

Not to be confused with downtown’s Haywood Street, West Asheville’s main thoroughfare, Haywood Road, is a walkable street mall lined with unique small shops and restaurants. Plan a day to explore the whole street, soaking in its eccentric verve while wandering in and out of retailers like cute plant and gift shops, a radical bookstore collective, an award-winning record store, a comic book shop, an independently owned toy store, cannabis dispensaries, art galleries and more.

OTHER ENTERTAINMENT THINGS TO DO

Woolworth Walk

Anyone who grew up in the ’90s is probably familiar with the line in Nirvana’s 1991 breakout single “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” in which singer Kurt Cobain screams, “Here we are now/entertain us!” If Cobain were alive today and visiting Asheville, he’d find plenty of entertainment — from our region’s extensive arts and crafts community to local museums, theater groups and dance companies.

In an effort to squeeze every last drop out of this dated Nirvana reference, we promise you will not leave our area’s entertainment options feeling “stupid and contagious.” In fact, you might feel inspired and reinvigorated.

ARTS & CRAFTS

Whether you’re visiting downtown, driving the Blue Ridge Parkway or wandering the French Broad River, there are plenty of spots to experience the local arts and crafts scene. Below are some businesses and areas you won’t want to miss.

• Kress Emporium and Woolworth Walk are downtown within a two-minute stroll of each other. Both businesses are chock-full of works by local artists. Whether you’re interested in pottery, glasswork or paintings, there is something for everyone. Plus, Woolworth Walk is home to the Soda Fountain, which offers sandwiches, hot dogs, ice cream and more.

• While downtown, you’ll also want to swing by the Center for Craft, which contains two galleries spotlighting a range of mediums.

OTHER ENTERTAINMENT

• Despite the devastating impact of Tropical Storm Helene, the River Arts District continues to offer residents and visitors alike access to dozens of artists’ works and studios. Though many of the area’s creatives lost their studio spaces due to flooding, Pink Dog Creative, the Phil Mechanic Building, Wedge Studios, N.C. Glass Center and Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts are among the sites still open.

• Due to damage caused by Helene, visitors should check the status of roadways on the Blue Ridge Parkway before making plans. Currently, the Folk Art Center is open and houses a historical archive of regional craft and offers a rotating set of exhibits and demonstrations.

MUSEUMS

Chances are you’re familiar with some of our region’s bigname places. Biltmore Estate, the Asheville Art Museum, the aforementioned Center for Craft and the Asheville Museum of Science are likely among the venues already on your list.

But there are plenty of lesser-known gems to consider during your time in the region. Highlights below range from house museums to cultural centers and even a house cat museum!

HOUSE MUSEUMS:

• Asheville Museum of History, formerly the Smith-McDowell House Museum, occupies the oldest brick structure in Buncombe County. Built in 1840, the site is also believed to be the oldest surviving house in Asheville. The museum includes interpretive panels, collections and educational events.

• Literary nerds ought not miss a chance to visit the Thomas Wolfe Memorial. (No, not the guy who wrote The Bonfire of the Vanities — the other Thomas Wolfe!) Author of the 1929 novel Look Homeward, Angel, Wolfe fictionalized his youth in Asheville, providing a glimpse into the city’s past. His childhood home, which you can take a guided tour through at the memorial, is a key setting in the novel. Wolfe’s mother, Julia, operated it as a boardinghouse from 1906-45.

THINGS TO DO

• The Vance Birthplace in Weaverville is another house museum worth considering. It focuses on the realities of pioneer life for both free and enslaved people in Western North Carolina.

HISTORY AND CULTURE CENTERS:

• Researchers — amateur or professional — shouldn’t miss Buncombe County Special Collections. Located on the lower level of Pack Memorial Public Library, it specializes in the social, cultural and natural history of Western North Carolina.

• Once you wrap up at the library, head south by foot to the YMI Cultural Center. Opened in 1893, the site is in the heart of Asheville’s former African American business district. The venue also just celebrated the completion of its five-year, $6.2 million capital campaign.

• Across the street from the YMI is the LEAF Global Arts center. This space is great for kids and adults alike. Along with its interactive museum and arts center, it also hosts plenty of community events.

• Only a couple of blocks north is the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center. The site is dedicated to preserving the history and exploring the legacy of Black Mountain College, an innovative institution that operated from 1933-57.

• Outside Asheville proper, there are plenty of additional options:

• Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center in Black Mountain occupies the town’s former fire station, built in 1921. The museum, a nonprofit, was established in 1989 and hosts exhibits and educational programs that are fun for the whole family.

• In neighboring Montreat, the Presbyterian Heritage Center includes preserved records and material from all Presbyterian and Reformed Church denominations.

• In Weaverville, just north of Asheville, the Dry Ridge Historical Museum emphasizes collecting, preserving and sharing the history of Weaverville, Reems Creek and Flat Creek townships.

Asheville Radio Museum

OTHER ENTERTAINMENT

NICHE MUSEUMS:

• If you’re a fan of radios, don’t miss the Asheville Radio Museum, which includes an expansive collection of equipment, advertisements and other memorabilia. Hours vary.

• If you’re more into cars, don’t miss Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum in historic Grovewood Village. It is open AprilDecember.

• OK, so you don’t like radios or cars. Perhaps airplanes are your thing. Well, you’re in luck — the Western North Carolina Air Museum is within driving distance of Asheville in nearby Hendersonville. The site focuses on the Golden Age of Aviation, 1918-39. Hours are limited. Closed December-February.

THINGS TO DO

• Fine! You don’t like mechanical things. How about cats? That’s right — cats! In Jackson County, about 45 minutes west of Asheville, exists one of the most wonderfully strange sites in all of Western North Carolina: the American Museum of the House Cat. From vintage advertisements to a mummified feline, this place has it all.

PERFORMING ARTS

Whether you’re a fan of live theater, independent movie houses or dance, you’ll find plenty of local options during your visit to WNC.

• In the mood for a drama, comedy or musical? Be sure to check out available productions at N.C. Stage Company, Asheville Community Theatre, Different Strokes Performing Arts Collective and the Montford Park Players

• More interested in dance? Shindig on the Green takes place most Saturdays from late June through late August at Pack Square Park and features clogging and traditional dance.

• Seeking something more modern? Check out the Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre as well as Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance.

• If you’re just in the mood for popcorn, a soda and a film, consider the Fine Arts Theatre in downtown Asheville, which focuses on art and independent films.

THINGS TO DO

ADDITIONAL OPTIONS

OK, now that you’ve learned all you can at our region’s museums and cultural centers, it’s time to let loose a little. And luckily for you, WNC also has plenty of ways to get down.

• Want to go clubbing? Your best bets are Club Eleven on Grove and Room Nine.

• Want to swing dance? Be sure to check out Swing Asheville, which meets at multiple locations across town.

• What about salsa dancing? If this is your thing, One World Brewing West hosts Latin Night each Wednesday starting at 8:30 p.m.

• Contra dancing is also an option, with sessions taking place at Warren Wilson College on most Thursday nights.

• Not in the mood to break a sweat? No worries. WNC is home to plenty of trivia nights, thanks in large part to our area’s plethora of breweries. Not Rocket Science Trivia takes place across multiple taprooms Monday-Thursday nights.

• Interested in literary readings? Be sure to look up events at Story Parlor in West Asheville. To read your poetry to a captivated and supportive audience, consider heading to Black Mountain for the Dark City Poets Society, which hosts its poetry night at Oak & Grist Distillery on the third Tuesday of each month.

• Sports fans can also get their fix by attending a Tourists minor league baseball game or catching the Asheville City Soccer Club, which offers preprofessional-level excitement with men’s and women’s teams.

• Drag shows and burlesque performances are another option. O.Henry’s, Asheville’s oldest gay bar, features weekly performances by drag queens and kings. Meanwhile, BOLD Burlesque AVL hosts monthly sessions at The Odd in West Asheville.

LIVE MUSIC THINGS TO DO

The Orange Peel

Asheville’s music scene has seen some major changes in recent months.

In May 2024, one of the city’s premier outdoor venues, Salvage Station, announced it had until the end of the year to operate at its location in the River Arts District. At the start of 2025, the N.C. Department of Transportation would acquire the property for the Interstate 26 Connector project. Sadly, the venue did not make it to the end of the 2024 calendar year. It was destroyed on Sept. 27 by flooding caused by Tropical Storm Helene.

Despite the devastation, Salvage Station owner Danny McClinton is still looking for a new location. Meanwhile, work on the I-26 Connector project is now underway.

Another outdoor venue, Rabbit Rabbit, located in downtown Asheville, rebranded in early 2025 as Asheville Yards. The name change also came with a series of lawsuits between the businesses’ founding partners Asheville Pizza and Brewing and The Orange Peel. The latter is no longer involved in Asheville Yards’ operation.

Of course, it isn’t all destruction and litigation. Despite the overwhelming damage the city and region experienced last year from Helene, Asheville’s music scene remains strong.

The iconic, and aforementioned, Orange Peel continues to bring national touring acts to its indoor venue. With its intimate space, The Grey Eagle in the River Arts District invites fans to get close to their favorite performers. And Asheville Music Hall gives listeners a chance to take in a show amid the hustle and bustle of downtown.

THINGS TO DO

LIVE MUSIC

Beyond traditional concert halls, visitors can also find music at a number of breweries and bars. Highlights include Asheville’s oldest brewery Highland Brewing Co. , as well as Pisgah Brewing Co. in Black Mountain, which both have large outdoor stages. The Jack of the Wood pub in downtown Asheville is known for its cozy indoor shows.

Speaking of downtown, when visiting it, you’ll likely come across a number of buskers in the spring and summer (with even a few performing in the chillier autumn months). The best spots to find these street performances are on Wall Street, Haywood Street and Pack Square. If you film, take photos or simply appreciate the songs they’re playing, please consider tipping these artists.

THINGS TO DO

WELLNESS & HEALING

Western North Carolina has long been a destination for people seeking relief from physical ailments and balm for mental and emotional distress. Asheville’s reputation as a wellness destination stretches back to 1871, when the country’s first tuberculosis sanitarium opened in 1871 in the Kenilworth neighborhood. The decades that followed saw the construction of more than 130 boardinghouses and sanitariums dedicated to curing the illness.

While the tuberculosis treatment centers have been repurposed, Asheville’s legacy as a center for alternative wellness continues. Today, one can find health and wellness experiences of all stripes, from forest bathing to spa treatments to delta-9 gummies.

Like other sectors, local health and wellness businesses experienced a significant impact from Tropical Storm Helene. Be sure to contact locations before visiting for current information on hours and offerings.

• Asheville Salt Cave: This healing space provides an environment for relaxation and detoxification in its natureinspired room filled with 30 tons of pure, pink salt rocks.

• Wake Foot Sanctuary: Warm foot soaks made up of essential oils, nourishing clays and revitalizing salts are the focus of this downtown spa.

• Asheville Dispensary: The West Asheville hemp and CBD store also features an herbal elixir bar, CBD wellness lounge and community space.

• Sauna House: Guests can alternate between steamy saunas and polar plunges, along with relaxing on heated furniture designed for lounging at this modern bathhouse on the South Slope.

• Shoji Spa & Retreat: Private soaking tubs, a sauna and massage therapy are highlights of this Japanese-style spa..

• Asheville Yoga Center: In its quiet location just north of downtown, this studio offers drop-in yoga classes as well as workshops, retreats and teacher training programs.

THINGS TO DO

• Still Point Wellness: In addition to Esalen massage services, guests at this spa can experience deep relaxation through sensory deprivation inside a saltwater float tank.

• Blomkraft Studio: A self-described “self-care sanctuary,” this downtown business features energy healing, organic facials and therapeutic massage.

• WagWorld: Dog parents can let their fur babies play in one of the property’s enclosed canine-friendly spaces while they sip on kratom and kava drinks or craft beers or indulge in cannabis products from the on-site dispensary.

• Namaste in Nature: This company’s two- to three-hour micro retreats combine yoga with hikes to waterfalls, mountaintops at sunset and other gorgeous locales.

• Asheville Wellness Tours: These tours present an array of Asheville wellness experiences, including forest bathing, goat yoga and more.

KIDS CENTRAL THINGS TO DO

Drum Circle at Pritchard Park

“This is supposed to be fun!”

Ah, the timeless phrase inevitably lamented at some point by parents with kids on a family vacation. Here are a few ideas to hopefully help you avoid uttering this line during your visit to Asheville.

GET MOVING

• Adventure Center of Asheville features zip lines for adults and children 4 and older. The site also features the Kolo Bike Park for youths. Check the website for updates, as some trails are temporarily closed due to damage caused by Tropical Storm Helene.

• Navitat Canopy Adventures in nearby Barnardsville also offers zip line tours for ages 5 through adults. Participants must weigh between 60-265 pounds.

• Fiddlehead in nearby Mills River has rock climbing walls and an outdoor bike park for adults and kids.

• In downtown, the Asheville Skatepark provides a space for beginner, intermediate and expert skaters.

WATER FUN, HIKING AND MORE

• In downtown Asheville, kids always have a blast at Splasheville, a free, interactive public splash pad at Pack Square Park, 80 Court Plaza.

• And who doesn’t love a nice stroll around a lake? In North Asheville, you’ll find the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary. Many of the trees were toppled during Tropical Storm Helene, but the paths are still open. A few miles north, in nearby Weaverville, Lake Louise Park offers a trail as well as a park for kids.

• Info on local pools and additional playgrounds can be found on the facility pages of the Asheville Parks & Recreation (avl.mx/dj9) and Buncombe County Recreation Services (avl.mx/dja) websites.

• Lakeview Putt and Play on Hendersonville Road in Arden includes a mini-golf course and laser tag room.

THINGS TO DO

• The WNC Nature Center reopened six months after Helene. The site is home to dozens of animals, including black bears, American Red wolves, goats, otters and more.

• If you’re into trees, garden strolls and miniature train sets, the N.C. Arboretum is a must.

• In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene, it’s wise to check the status of all trails and swimming holes before making your way to a destination.

ESCAPE THE HEAT

• Get creative with your kids by taking them to the Asheville Art Museum. Along with exposing them to various artistic mediums, the site has a makerspace with plenty of supplies.

• If your child loves dinosaurs and gems, don’t miss the Asheville Museum of Science. Along with interactive stations, the venue has an indoor jungle gym.

• In the mood for pottery? Fired Up! Creative Lounge on Wall Street in downtown Asheville is a hands-on studio offering in-studio painting and to-go pottery. Reservations are encouraged. The shop has a second location at the Blue Ridge Mall in Hendersonville.

• Want to go old school? Head to the Asheville Pinball Museum, which features 40 pinball machines and 40 classic video games.

• In the escape room genre, families may enjoy the adventure puzzle rooms of Fox-N-Otter Adventure Escapes. The company has three locations in Asheville, Arden and Hendersonville.

• If you find your way down to Arden, Mountain Play Lodge is an indoor playground for kids ages 12 and younger. For the teenagers in your life, consider nearby Launch trampoline park.

• A little farther south in Hendersonville, the Hands On! Children’s Museum includes a number of play stations, science projects and activities.

• Asheville also has two bowling alleys: AMF Star Lanes in East Asheville and Sky Lanes in West Asheville.

PLAYING AND CHILLING

Since you’re in Beer City USA, there’s a good chance you’ll want to experience some local breweries. Here are a few family-friendly sites that will be fun for the whole crew.

• Turgua Brewing in Fairview is a brewery and winery with plenty of outdoor space and a creek for the kids to play in while the adults enjoy their beverages. Bring your hiking chairs, if you’ve got them.

• Also in Fairview is the train-themed Whistle Hop Brewing Co., which features seating inside genuine vintage rail cars, plus an outdoor space with disc golf, miniature golf and other activities for the whole family to enjoy.

• In North Asheville, Salt Face Mule Brewing Co. also offers puttputt as well as a full food menu with plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options.

• In East Asheville, Creekside Taphouse features its own creekfront outdoor playground area.

• If you’re in the mood for a family dinner and a movie, swing by Asheville Pizza & Brewing on Merrimon Avenue.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

No visit to Asheville is complete without a foray into the area’s vibrant food and beverage scenes. Where else can you find nationally celebrated chefs and award-winning restaurants rubbing elbows with equally distinguished beverage professionals, craft breweries, cocktail bars, coffee shops and more — all in a friendly little city of under 100,000 people?

Divided neatly into several distinct dining and drinking neighborhoods, Asheville lends itself to self-curated walking tours. Or simply use the Eats & Drinks business listings in this guide as well as the local favorites highlighted in the Best of WNC lists to plan daily itineraries based on your cravings.

As Asheville continues its long recovery from the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Helene in September 2024, visitors can feel good knowing that, these days, savoring a locally sourced salad or sipping a locally brewed beer equals more than the sum of the delicious ingredients. The support of visitors is vital to the survival of Asheville’s innovative, independently operated restaurants and beverage enterprises. Particularly in need of help are businesses in areas like Biltmore Village and the River Arts District that suffered severe damage from flooding and are now working hard to rebuild.

Don’t hesitate to visit those neighborhoods, see what businesses have reopened, belly up to the table or bar and give them some love.

IMPORTANT: With Asheville’s business landscape still in flux in the aftermath of the disaster, business hours and offerings tend to shift frequently. Be sure to check business websites and social media or call ahead for updates before planning outings. .

DOWNTOWN DINING

Downtown Asheville’s restaurants, rooftop bars, cafés, bakeries, chocolate shops and more are contained within about 1 square mile of hilly land around Pack Square Park. A walk from north to south straight through the city’s heart, along Broadway as it turns into Biltmore Avenue, is essentially a global food tour: Sample decadent pastries at Old Europe; Asian noodle soup at the Noodle Shop; beanto-bar craft chocolates at French Broad Chocolate Lounge; nationally lauded Spanish tapas at Cúrate; or scratch-made tacos at Mamacita’s Taqueria. And that’s just a taste! Each downtown thoroughfare — such as Lexington Avenue, Patton Avenue, Wall Street and Haywood Street — offers its own inviting smorgasbord of options.

LEANING INTO THE SOUTH SLOPE

Formerly a collection of shuttered warehouses and storefronts, the South Slope neighborhood at the southern edge of downtown has

EATS FOOD & DRINK

only come into its own as Asheville’s newest hive of dining and drinking establishments within the past decade. With a much smaller footprint than downtown, it offers a surprising variety of eateries, breweries, coffee shops and cocktail bars. Find easygoing barbecue choices at Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ; grab a curry or chaat at James Beard Foundation Outstanding Restaurant winner Chai Pani; snack on arepas and yucca fries at Little Chango; savor a French omelet or classic jambon-beurre at Mother; or tuck into zhuzhed-up fish camp fare from celebrity chef Ashleigh Shanti at Good Hot Fish.

WANDERING WEST ASHEVILLE

Funky, fun West Asheville boogies to the beat of its own drum, and the neighborhood’s main business vein, Haywood Road, is a straight line of appropriately colorful foodie delights. From its starting point at the Patton Avenue intersection to its end point at Beacham’s Curve, culinary explorers will discover everything from pastries and breads at Sunny Point Café’s Rabbit Hole bakery to a vegan comfort food lunch at the Smokin’ Onion to upscale dining at Jargon and The Admiral. Late-evening noshers will find plenty of options, like wings and bodega sandwiches at Golden Pineapple or hand-crafted ice creams and elegant desserts at Potential New Boyfriend wine bar. Patton Avenue also beckons with gems like the authentic Lebanese menu at Gypsy Queen Cuisine, Salvadoran and Honduran dishes at Pupuseria Patty and the biscuit sandwiches and other comfort food favorites at Regina’s Westside.

RECOVERY MODE — BILTMORE VILLAGE AND THE RIVER ARTS DISTRICT

In the wake of catastrophic flooding from Helene, two of Asheville’s most popular dining destinations — Biltmore Village and the River Arts District (RAD) — have rolled up their sleeves and are pouring their energy into rebuilding. In the RAD, many art galleries, restaurants, bars and coffee shops in the upper part of the neighborhood have reopened, including Bull & Beggar, Golden Hour and many more. Even some new ones, like biscuit and coffee shop ButterPunk, have launched. In Biltmore Village, several businesses are already up and running — among them are Daily Grind Coffee, Red Stag Grill, Standard Pizza, Hillman Beer, French Broad River Brewery, Eda Rhyne Distillery and Burial Beer’s Forestry Camp restaurant and taproom. Others, including Corner Kitchen, expect to reopen soon. Both neighborhoods joyfully welcome visitors as the key to bringing these strong, resilient parts of the Asheville community back to life.

POINTS BEYOND

The Eats & Drinks listings also offer options for dining excursions in the scenic smaller towns outside Asheville. Black Mountain, Waynesville, Sylva, Hendersonville and other locales all have their own unique, vibrant food and drink scenes worth experiencing. Some towns, such as Marshall and Swannanoa, are still deep in recovery from disastrous flooding during Helene, yet they still welcome visitors to patronize the businesses that have already managed to get back on their feet.

CUP OF JOE

Friends don’t let friends start their day without a cup of coffee. Fortunately, Asheville has plenty of jitter juice options. Whether you’re downtown, in the River Arts District or staying at an Airbnb in a more residential area, a coffeehouse is never far away. Along Haywood Road in West Asheville, for example, you’ll find over half a dozen coffee options as you meander down the thoroughfare’s 2-mile stretch between Ridgelawn Road and Patton Avenue. For some of our local favorites, be sure to check our Best of WNC listings included on page 89.

FRESH AND FRUITY

If you gravitate more toward something with less caffeine and more of a vitamin kick, be sure to check out Simple: Cafe & Juice Bar in West Asheville. Meanwhile, in North Asheville, Pulp + Sprout Juice Bar and Vegan Cafe is a must. Finally, Green Sage (with three locations across Asheville) offers cold-pressed juices and whole fruit smoothies.

BEER ME

Anyone who knows anything about Asheville and WNC knows we are home to plenty of breweries, including several dozen in Asheville city proper. Whether you’re an IPA enthusiast, a sour beer connoisseur or a lager fanatic, you’ll never be short of options on your visit. The

DRINKS

same is true for settings. Whether you want to sip in the heart of downtown or along an idyllic stream, the possibilities are wide open.

“Now, more than ever, showing up for our breweries is critical. After enduring over 50 days without water due to Hurricane Helene, halting production, delaying openings and suffering power outages and impassable roads, our craft beer industry is still recovering,” says Karis Roberts, executive director of Asheville Brewers Alliance. “The economic impact has been staggering, with losses estimated at over $7 billion. Every pint, every visit and every show of support helps these businesses rebuild and continue doing what they do best: bringing people together over incredible beer.”

HAPPY HOUR

Seeking spirits? Downtown Asheville is your best bet. From rooftop bars at numerous hotels to speakeasy-style destinations, you won’t have to drive to get from bar to bar. And if the music or vibe isn’t jelling with you in one spot, there’s always the next destination a block away. Don’t forget to tip your bartenders.

SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT

If you don’t drink alcohol but are seeking a different type of buzz, consider visiting one of our city’s several kava bars. What is kava? It is a substance made from a plant native to the Pacific Islands and has sedative and psychoactive properties. If kava isn’t on your menu of things to try, there are also a number of hemp and cannabis dispensaries in town serving up a variety of drinks.

WALKABLE ASHEVILLE

Again, downtown is where you’ll get the most bang for your buck in terms of walkability. Broadway, Lexington Avenue, Haywood Street and Wall Street are among the most popular thoroughfares in terms of places to grab a bite or sip a drink.

South Slope, which is on the edge of downtown, is another hot spot. The area is home to over half a dozen breweries and plenty of dining options.

West Asheville is another great spot for the peripatetic. Not only will you find plenty of coffeehouses, as previously mentioned, but the main strip — Haywood Road — is loaded with dive bars, cocktail lounges, restaurants and bakeries.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

HEALTH AND INJURIES

For emergencies, dial 911. But for less immediate problems, there are other options: Mercy Urgent Care serves West, East and South Asheville; Novant Health GoHealthUrgent Care is in North Asheville; FastMed Urgent Care is in South Asheville and Pardee Urgent Care south of Asheville. Local pharmacies are everywhere, including in grocery stores.

MISSING THINGS OR NONEMERGENCY CRIMES

For lost and stolen items, use a nonemergency number to contact the appropriate law enforcement department. In Asheville, call 828-2521110; in other parts of Buncombe County, call 828-250-6670.

CAR PROBLEMS

There are several local tow companies, and some offer repairs. If you’re towed in the downtown business district or a Biltmore Village parking lot, call the number on the “Towing Enforced” signs. If it’s not apparent why you were towed, call Asheville Parking Services at 828259-5792 or the police.

LEGAL TROUBLE

Whether you broke the rules or it was a misunderstanding, you don’t have to face the system alone. Asheville is full of lawyers with various specialties, and there is a 24-hour bail-bond service one block from the jail.

BEARS!

While dangerous encounters are rare, Asheville is home to wild mammals, including bears and opossums. They love food and garbage, so stow trash safely. If your unattended car has food inside, close the windows and lock the doors. Most local spiders and snakes aren’t venomous, and venomous bites aren’t typically life-threatening if properly treated. If an animal is causing significant problems, you can call animal control at 828-250-6670.
