‘The Hunger Games’ 4-Day Itinerary R

eady to experience “The Hunger Games”? You’ve come to the right place. The road to Panem starts and ends in North Carolina, where the eagerly awaited movie was shot.

This four-day itinerary, which loops from Charlotte to Asheville and back, leads to film locations, choice star hangouts and sites that connect to elements of the Suzanne Collins novel. It also notes training options to learn skills a Tribute could use. DAY 1-Imagine you’re Effie, leaving the decadence of the Capitol (Charlotte), dropping by District 12 (Hildebran), then landing in a fun-loving place that makes film stars feel at home (Asheville).

Henry River Mill Village as Discrict 12 and as it is today.

Henry River Mill Village stands in for the Seam and the Mellark family bakery.

At the abandoned Henry River Mill Village, filmmakers found a ready-made set for the Mellark family bakery and the Everdeens’ shanty. DAY 4 -Explore the Capitol (Charlotte), which turns out to be Haymitch’s kind of place. DAY 1 –Head out of Charlotte and drive an hour northwest to Hildebran, where the Henry River Manufacturing Co. once turned out fine combed cotton yarns.

Continue on I-40 to Asheville, where the cast and crew were based during much of the summer shoot. This Appalachian city does right by everyone from the rich and famous to bohemians, outdoorsmen and dreamers — little wonder it suited the “The Hunger Games” cast. B

ack in the early 1980’s, the Recreation Department of The City of Morganton decided to have a fireworks display on the 4th of July. A small amount of money was set aside and a few fireworks were obtained from the neighboring state of South Carolina. That evening, about dark, there was about 10-15 minutes of fireworks on the campus of Western Piedmont Community College. Such was the beginning...

then a 4 day event in 2006. In 2010 it became a 5 day festival (with the first day being FREE), beginning June 30th through the 4th of July. So far, we have had visitors from all states in the continental United States and many foreign countries as well. Visitors from Canada, England, Switzerland, Germany, France and Japan have all come to enjoy bluegrass in our North Carolina town.

Within a few years this event (with professional fireworks) began gathering crowds which eventually outgrew the facilities of the campus of WPCC. Traffic problems which sprang from the site being located very close to Interstate 40, forced the fireworks to move to the Burke County Fairgrounds. Now, nearly 30 years later, what had become an annual event (which DID include music of all varieties) is quickly becoming one of the premier bluegrass festivals in the southeastern United States. In 2004, the annual 4 th of July celebration became the first annual Red White and Bluegrass Festival. That first year was a 2 day event. Eventually it became a 3 day event,

2012 Great Southeastern Rail Days Festival T he N.C. Transportation Museum is once again celebrating the golden age of railroading this June, but doing so in a bigger and better fashion than ever before. The Great Southeastern Rail Days Festival will be held Saturday, June 2 from 9a.m. to 5p.m. and June 3 from noon to 5p.m.

The Great Southeastern Rail Days Festival will feature an expanded offering of train rides, live music, magic, railroad artist Andy Fletcher, kid’s activities and a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the merger of Southern Railway and Norfolk & Western to form Norfolk-Southern Railways. Like our previous “Rail Days” events, there will be a huge offering for families and railfans alike. But like the name, this year’s event is bigger and better. With each ticket, unlimited rides will be available aboard three passenger trains, including the Flagg 75 Steam Engine Caboose Train, featuring a coal fired steam engine pulling five colorful cabooses. Railfans will delight in our themed passenger trains, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Southern and N&W merger. The Southern themed train will feature the Southern FP7 #6133 and E8 #6900 engines with the Royal Arch, Pine Tree State and Doris private rail cars, among others. Our N&W

themed train will feature the N&W GP9 #620 engine pulling our 1950’s era passenger cars. At the Roundhouse, visitors can also climb into the cab of two engines for a quick run up and down the tracks with the engineer’s view of the rails. Visitors can also take a ride on our motor cars, smaller machines that run along the rails for maintenance. Between rides, a host of activities will be happening all around. A hobo camp will be set up with stories of riding the rails without paying the fare. Chaz the Magician will roam the site, so visitors never know when magic may happen. Children can also enjoy crafts and activities in the Bob Julian Roundhouse. Continued On Page 29

Film Junkies Guide to North Carolina Anson and Union County Locations Anson and Union counties are due east of Charlotte on U.S. 74. The rural filming locations are on private property. Two wildly diverse films from the 1980s were made in the rural North Carolina counties of Anson and Union. They were directed by two of the top names in the business, one getting away from his trademark special effects, the other just starting out. Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple and Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II. Dead by Dawn are about as different as films can get. And yet parts of them were filmed at the same location. The Color Purple was controversial for everything from its sexual and feminist themes to Spielberg’s “audacity” in making a film about rural African-Americans in the early 1900s. Author Alice Walker won a Pulitzer Prize for her novel. She discusses the making of the film in her book The Same River Twice: Honoring the Difficult, which includes her original, unused version of the script. The lead role of Celie went to Whoopi Goldberg, a little-known standup comedian, while the supporting part of Sofia marked the film debut of Oprah Winfrey, whose talk show was just catching on in syndication. Both won Golden Globes ® and were nominated for Academy Awards®.

Goldberg and Winfrey have spoken of bonding while filming in rural North Carolina. Spielberg grew quite fond of Bojangles’ chicken and biscuits. The main house in the film is a vacant farmhouse off U.S. 74 and Lilesville-Morvan Road. The house is on private property and is not available to visitors. The church was moved here from another location in Anson County. The false front of Celie’s house at the end of the film was built here. The town scenes were done in Marshville (the home of singer and actor Randy Travis), particularly along a two-block section of White Street between Main Street and U.S. 74. Mann Brothers Pharmacy is actually a produce store in real life. A livery stable, a storefront church, and the Blue Heaven Cafe were among the businesses created for the movie. Planks and dirt were put down to cover the sidewalks and pavement. A few remnants of the shooting

are still around. Celie’s dream of tossing golden chocolates to her sister was filmed on railroad tracks near Ansonville, and her trip to the immigration office was filmed at the Anson County Courthouse in Wadesboro. Q: Four sequels to what popular 1977 movie filmed in Union County? A: Smokey and the Bandit. Writer and director Hal Needham kept many of the same characters for these “Bandit” TV movies, shot in 1994. Though Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, and Jackie Gleason weren’t around, Brian Bloom starred as the Bandit. Guest stars included Tony Curtis, Elizabeth Berkley, Traci Lords, and Kathy Ireland.

North Carolina’s Wine Story They say every wine has a story. Wait till you hear ours. Not long after Sir Walter Raleigh landed in what would become North Carolina, the grape vine was first introduced and cultivated in the New World. In fact, by the dawn of the 20th Century, NC was the leading wine-producing region in the nation. It seemed nothing could stop us. But we hadn’t counted on an act of Congress. 1919. Prohibition. Suddenly, products from distilleries in undisclosed locations in the Piedmont hills and dales were rather more lucrative than those from the gnarled grape orchards of yore. When we spoke of fruit, it was shriveled in white lightning. When

we packaged, it was in Mason jars rather than Chardonnay bottles. Other pursuits followed. Often at high speeds. The sudden professional interest of G-Men and revenuers gave rise to moonlit, midnight chases across the humble countryside, engendering a motorized pastime that became a sport that became NASCAR. But other things permeated our viticulture, too. Our wines evoke not just oaken barrels, but local flavors and connections, whether of barbecue or mountain trout or tailgate parties. And our vineyards summon samplings not of wine alone, but wine with festivals, with arts and crafts, with our own music and local culture. And always, with the state’s natural beauty as a backdrop. Our land is rich and many-textured. The vines are wide in variety. And the people who grow them are as interesting and diverse as the state itself and, led by pioneers, farming families and glorious chance-takers, North Carolina has returned to its original roots. This is a wine tasting like no other. You’re invited.

North Carolina food products on their menus. The competition recognizes and rewards the efforts of restaurants and chefs who use North Carolina products regularly in their menus, and it increases awareness of the quality of local foods and restaurants and the talent of N.C. chefs.

Rail fans both young and old will see S-gauge, N-scale, and HOscale model train layouts in the Roundhouse, amazing displays of the railroading on the small side. The event will also feature rail car lifting demonstrations, a diesel engine horn display, tie-handler displays and much more for hard core rail fans.

The 25 finalists were chosen based on their proposed menus and marketing plans for promoting the menu. Chefs were allowed to enter a combination of dishes (for example, an appetizer with an entrĂŠe and dessert), but each was judged as a single entry.

Rail fan photographers will have two after-hours photo sessions. An Evening Photo Shoot and a Nighttime Photo Shoot will be available, with $20 tickets that include both sessions.

Competition finalists are required to feature the dish or combination of courses in their restaurant for at least a four-week period running between May and September. During this time, the judges will visit each finalist within their region to sample the entries and judge each restaurant on its use of North Carolina products, creativity, presentation, taste and promotion. First-, second- and third-place winners will be announced in November.

The evening photo shoot, Saturday from 5pm to 7:30pm, will include a recreation of the famous golden spike photo that announced the merger N&W/Southern merger, featuring a visiting locomotive, the GP9 #522. Photo run-bys and more will take place.

Visit www.bestdishnc.com for more contest information.

General tickets to the Great Southeastern Rail Days Festival are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and active military and $15 for children. Tickets include unlimited train rides and all activities.
