Summer Fun On Beech Mountain

Beat the heat this summer with a trip to Beech Mountain, eastern America’s highest town. A full schedule of fun family-friendly activities, many of them free, awaits you here in North Carolina’s high country, where just a few hours of driving takes you into North Carolina’s cool, breezy highlands. There are plenty of lodging options on Beech Mountain, from hotels to condos and individual houses suitable for families and groups of all sizes.

Beginning May 27th, the Beech Mountain Resort will be open for the summer season. Scenic chair lift rides, down hill mountain biking, and a brewery draw many visitors, and free live music at the skybar on Saturday afternoons are the icing on the cake. Musicians love to play on the deck of 5506, with panoramic views behind them, and the setting makes for an unforgettable afternoon. The concert is free but there is a charge for the lift ride to the skybar. Please note that the lift isn’t suitable for pets, infants, or small children.

The Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria will host Family Fun

Night every Friday from June 2nd through August 18th. These popular outdoor gatherings are free, and include live music, a bounce house for kids, and a family-friendly outdoor movie. Fred’s General Mercantile continues a long tradition of Summer Sunset Concerts on the Gazebo every Sunday night in July.

The Beech Mountain Farmers’ Market is back! Fresh organic produce, honey, baked goods, plants, gourmet dog treats, and farm raised beef are just a few of the local products that will be available for purchase. Join us every first Friday of the month from June to October from 2 – 6 pm in the public parking lot across from Fred’s General Mercantile. Parking is free!

A Place Where Your Imagination Takes Flight

There is still a place that can elevate your mood, your sense of wonder, and your spirit.

A charming place – Statesville, nestled in the brushy mountains of NC at the intersection of I-77 and I-40.

A place you can kickstart your day in a historic downtown setting with locally roasted coffee and friendly smiles.

A place where if you’re looking for a different speed, you’ll find one with our many outdoor outfitters. Choose from lake activities or even bike rentals or recommendations for our area parks and trails.

No matter your taste, be sure to take a moment to enjoy one of the 80 unique, local restaurants, each bursting with their own original flavors. From one-of-a-kind eateries to cafes, pizzerias, and fine dining — where local chefs serve amazing food and craft cocktails in warm and welcoming spaces.

All this in a place just steps away from quiet and peaceful accommodations.

Travel back in time to when the colonial frontier was being forged – and hear the storied events that unfolded at Fort Dobbs State Historic Site.

A place where your imagination takes flight with a hot air balloon ride over the beautiful scenic vistas for over 50 miles of viewing on a clear day. Let the quiet ascent into the cloud change your perspective and lift your outlook.

You don’t have to wait for an event to take a hot air balloon ride in Statesville. Local balloon pilots are scheduling flights twice a day, weather permitting, seven days a week, all year-‘round.

You can choose a sunrise flight at dawn or a sunset flight, about two hours before the sun goes down.

As the ballooning capital of the East and home to the Carolina BalloonFest as well as one of the nation’s oldest balloon manufacturers, our city’s unique beauty extends well beyond the tree line.

Hickory Trail Should Be At The Top Of Your Travel List

If excitement and beauty are what you seek, Hickory, North Carolina and its multi-faceted Hickory Trail should be at the top of your travel list. Embark on an all-encompassing journey through Hickory filled with history, art and adventure. To visitors, this series of over 10 miles of trails offers a perfect introduction to the city’s well-crafted community.

Weaving its way through Downtown Hickory, past works of art and along Lake Hickory’s tree-lined banks, the terrain of the Hickory Trail changes from railroad to sidewalk to boardwalk as it goes. A series of smaller strolls make up the complete Hickory Trail. These include the City Walk with breathtaking views of downtown, the OLLE Art Walk which showcases installations from talented local artists and the Historic Ridgeview Walk, immersing visitors in Hickory’s rich cultural heritage. Outdoor enthusiasts should plan to load up their bikes and helmets before hitting the trail. Biking is

encouraged and a great way to do even more sight seeing in less time. With dedicated bike lanes along the entire trail, both bicyclists and pedestrians can explore safely. As Hickory continues to grow and develop, so do the opportunities for enjoyment, and so does the Hickory Trail. New pieces of the trail will include the Aviation Walk which features a pedestrian bridge and ends conveniently at the Hickory Regional Airport, so visitors can start their adventure as soon as they exit the plane. With so many endeavors along just one path, and a promise of more to come, the Hickory Trail brings visitors face-toface with the creative culture that abounds in Hickory.

New Adventures In Burke County

Summer is finally here and it is the perfect time to get out and explore the outdoors. Here in Burke County, we deem ourselves Nature’s Playground due to our fantastic outdoor amenities both new and old. Located just off of 1-40 between Hickory and Asheville, we are one of the best kept secrets for outdoor enthusiasts in North Carolina.

The Fonta Flora State Trail is one of those secrets that is starting to get out due to 2023 being celebrated as Year of the Trail across the state. This trail will eventually stretch from downtown Morganton to downtown Asheville but currently consists of a approximately 20 mile stretch of natural surface path that goes around Lake James. The most popular place to enter the trail is County Park located on N.C. Highway 126 just outside of Morganton but there are other accesses

that make it easy to section hike different areas. There are currently multiple sections being constructed in McDowell and Burke counties that

Local & Regional Destinations & Experiences 20

will eventually all connect together to form the finished long distance trail but until then there is plenty to mountain bike or hike around the lake area.

Another hidden gem in Burke County is Valdese Lakeside Park. This new park was opened to the public in 2021 and features 7 miles of hiking and biking trails and a swinging bridge over McGalliard Creek connecting Valdese Lakeside Park to McGalliard Falls Park. McGalliard Falls Park has been managed by Valdese Parks and Recreation since 1982 so it was exciting to be able to join an older established park to a new park. Valdese Lakeside Park also has a dog

park at the main entrance on Lake Rhodhiss Drive and will soon have a kayak launch for people wanting to explore the lake via paddle craft.

These two new additions to our outdoor amenities join our multitude of established options like South Mountains State Park, the largest land area state park in North Carolina; Lake James State Park; the Catawba River Greenway; Linville Gorge and more. We keep finding new ways to connect to the outdoors and that is why we are called Nature’s Playground. Come play with us!
