What is automotive art? BY SUSANN MILLER

“The earliest automotive art goes back to pre-World War I, when speed and mobility were associated with the excitement of the new motorcar. The art took the form of posters, commercial prints, stained glass, and even fine art including crystal figurines depicting the automobile.” Early automotive artists include names we are very familiar with: Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) sketched the earliest automobiles, and after the war, the French artist F. Gordon Crosby (1885-1942) painted racing scenes from LeMans, France. René Lalique’s (1860-1945) first automotive work was in bronze and enamels, and later in glass. Today, Lalique’s original signed molded glass pieces of animals and women from radiator hood ornaments (car mascots) are very soughtafter items. Even Henri Matisse (1869-1954) painted La Route de Villacoublay in 1917, a scene from the perspective of the backseat of a right-hand drive automobile. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, much of the automotive art was seen in Europe, where sports racing was quite common. If there was a race going on, there were always artists sketching scenes to re-create the historical incident. Many of the poster pieces were used to advertise a specific event such as an exposition of the horseless carriage or an automobile club event. At the time, none of this work was called fine art. None of it was shown in galleries or even hung in homes as wall art. Most of these designs, sketches, or illustrations were, sadly, thrown away after the event. Also at this time, the art of decorating watch cases and penknives with a motoring theme

became fashionable. Some of the early collectible pieces that have lasted over time started as awards that were given out for a particular racing event. These awards were made in bronze and sometimes ceramic, depicting a popular entry of the race. The art of collecting anything that has to do with the automobile can go on forever. The medium had no boundaries, it sold to the automotive admirer. As the motorcar became a household word, the automobile manufacturers used the art to sell their products. It was easy to stylize or exaggerate a painting of the latest automobile even before the product was manufactured. Even into the 1950’s, Porsche sales literature used (www.porschebooks. org) illustrations of the next year’s models rather than photographs. By the time the cars were delivered, they rarely looked like the picture in the brochure. Finding these early sales brochures is a collectible art form by itself. Since World War II, most of the automotive art has been shown for sale in the United States. The shows can be public or private, and if the work is racing-oriented, it is often seen at racetracks across the North America. But the latest hot market has turned out to be Japan. Many Japanese collectors are car lovers, who do not have the available garage space to own multiple vehicles; it is much easier for them to purchase many pieces of automotive art. Another style or technique of painting is gouache on paper that was perfected by the German artist Walter Gotschke (1912-2000). His work is deceptively impressionistic;

(continued from issue # 3)

the subject matter ranges from hillclimb racing in the 1950’s through cars of the 1990’s, with each scene telling a story. Also from Germany was the artist Carlo Demand (19212000), whose automobile art can be seen in six books that he illustrated. A few more names of artists whose work you can look for when you are adding to your automotive art collecting are: Jesse Alexander, Lawrence A. Braun, Manu Campa, Harold Cleworth, Ken Dallison, Ken Eberts, Dave Friedman (1946-2009), Jerry Gambaccini (in Part 1), Jeff Gamble, Peter Helck (1893-1988), Andreas Hentrich, Nicolas Hunziker, Jack Juratovic, Jay Koka (in Part 1), Phyllis Krim, Sandra Leitzinger (1936-2002), David Lord, William Motta, Bill Neale, J. Paul Nesse, Randy Owens (see his images in Part 1), Charles (Chuck) Queener, Tony Sikorski, Dennis Simon (also produces wearable art such as neck ties with an automotive theme), Bill Stahl, Erich Strenger (1922-1993), and Michael Turner. There are also many more artists who are well known and greatly admired and collected, such as Leo Bestgen (1940-2002), Paul Bracq, Melborne Brindle (1904-1995), Dennis Brown, John Burgess, Sr. (1911-1992), Art Fitzpatrick (1919-2015), Dennis Fritz, Tom Hall, Dennis Hoyt, Richard Pietruska, Nicholas Watts, Nicola Wood, and Emanual Zurini, in addition to many others – sorry if I missed a few. Watch for automotive art shows at Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance as well as Pebble Beach. Enjoy the hunt for that treasured piece of art celebrating the joy of car watching.

Chevrolet

Debuts New Bag of Tricks

Corvette C8 Chevrolet’s worst-kept secret is now its most important vehicle debut of the past decade. The completely redesigned 2020 Chevrolet Corvette doesn’t just update an American icon, it flips the script by stuffing its V8 engine directly behind the driver, breaking with more than 65 years of tradition and elevating the coupe to an entirely different level of sports car dynamics. One look at the C8-generation Corvette and it’s clear that the car’s changes go more than skin-deep. Its stretchedout hindquarters hint at the mid-mounted position of its 6.2-liter engine, which produces up to 495 horses and 470 lb-ft of torque. Gone is the Chevrolet’s long hood and in its place a brief, supercar-style tuck that together with the louvers that allow you to peek at its power plant completes its near-exotic package. Hammer down from a standing start and the new Corvette delivers a level of performance that will wow even the most jaded supercar fan. Thanks to a standard launch control system and an available electronicallycontrolled, limited-slip differential integrated into its transaxle, the C8 makes the sprint to 60 mph in a mere 2.9 seconds. An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is included with every model )banishing the clutch pedal for good) and a magnetically-controlled suspension system is also available to smooth out the road at triple-digit speeds. Inside, the Corvette’s cabin is more snug than in the previous model, especially from the passenger side that’s crowded by a tall center console panel that also houses

top-mounted switches for the climate control system. The car’s touchscreen infotainment system, drive mode selector, and even the cupholders are clearly intended for the driver, who has a modicum of extra space to stretch out in. Weekend travelers will enjoy the composed and quiet ride of the C8, as well as the availability of two trunks (one front, one rear), but pop off the car’s removable targa roof and there’s not much space for overnight bags once it’s stowed in the back. On a race track, the Chevrolet Corvette displays the exceptional balance that mid-engine cars are known for, with the exception of some wiggles under hard braking due to its 40/60 weight split (intended to offer additional straight-line traction). That being said, this is a very different beast than the C7 in terms of fun factor: the C8 demands you load the nose via trail-braking in order to properly execute a high-speed corner and it brooks no sideways shenanigans, snapping back into line almost immediately when its chassis is upset. In some ways, this makes the re-imagined Corvette less ‘fun’ to drive than its predecessor. Chevrolet has traded smoke shows and power slides for a business-first attitude when tackling a road course. The lack of a true manual gearbox also distances the driver somewhat from connecting with the task at hand. Still, with a starting price of less than $60k, and higher-performance models on the way, the C8 is an incredible bargain for anyone seeking extroverted styling and a 194 mph top speed in an affordable, accessible, and daily-drivable package.

CLAY BAR For Your Vehicle’s Paint

1: CLAYING SAFELY REMOVES ABOVE SURFACE BONDED CONTAMINANTS Over time, if your vehicle is parked outside for any length of time during each day, dirt or air-borne contaminants that land on the paint will tend to bond to the paint if they are not removed in a timely manner. Once they bond to the paint some of them won’t come off just from normal washing. This is where detailing clay comes into the picture. 2: CLAYING ENABLES YOUR CHOICE OF WAX OR PAINT SEALANT TO BETTER BOND OR ADHERE TO THE PAINT Claying paint restores a clean surface, so a coating of wax or paint sealant can maximize the bond between the paint and the protection ingredients. This helps to insure the wax or paint sealant coating will last a long time, thus protect a long time, and this is something all people want out of their choice of car wax or paint sealant. 3: CLAYING RESTORES A SILKY, SMOOTH, AND CLEAN SURFACE When air-borne contaminants build-up on your vehicle’s finish they create an irregular surface or texture that feels rough or bumpy to the touch. This un-even, bumpy surface is due to above surface bonded contaminants, which reduces gloss. Claying your vehicle’s paint will remove the contaminants, which restores a smooth surface and restores a high gloss finish. 4: CLAYING MAKES POLISHING EASIER, MORE EFFECTIVE, AND SAFER In the context of this article, when we say polishing, we mean abrading the paint to remove below surface defects and/or refine the existing finish to a higher level.
