The Victress Manufacturing Company was founded in California in 1952. Its first model, the S1A was designed by Hugh Jorgensen, a Los Angeles Art Centre graduate, and William “Doc” Boyce-Smith in either 1951 or 1952. Jorgenson also designed the S4. The S1A was fitted on a variety of chassis. However those from the factory were built on either a Ford or a custom chassis from Mameco Corp. They usually had smallblock Chevrolet engines. Susann Miller is an author, photographer, artist, vintage race car driver, and long time volunteer at the Revs Institute in Naples, FL. She rode horses up until she was 16, until she found out that cars were faster and could take her farther, and she’s been car crazy since then!

Susann raced a 1968 Porsche 911 for 15 years at tracks such as - Watkins Glen (NY), Pocono (PA), Homestead (FL), Moroso (West Palm), Mid-Ohio, and VIR (Virginia International Raceway). These tracks are purpose built road courses that range from 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 miles long where men and women compete against each other as equals. Racing vintage cars (the cars must be 20 years old or older) at top speeds 160 miles an hour - she has won multiple trophies for placing in her category. She is quoted as saying: “The best of racing is the adrenaline rush and friendships of people you meet from all parts of the country.”

She was the editor of Gmünd magazine, a Porsche speciality publication, and has been a freelance automotive writer with articles in Cavallino (Ferrari), Automundo (all in Spanish), and USA Today. She has traveled around the globe to many races, not to drive, but to write and photograph the Formula One, and Grand Prix events.

2020 Aston Martin Vantage Breaks with Tradition, Shatters Expectations, and Still Cleans Up Nice
Sometimes, a break with the past can help build a better future. Such is the case with the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage, the first rung on the British brand’s ladder yet still one of its most compelling offerings. Unlike Astons of old, the current Vantage (now in its second year of production), embraces a harder styling edge that positions it well against the exciting crop of coupes crowding its $150k price range. Matched up against the mid-engine Audi R8 or the rear-engine Porsche 911 Turbo, the Vantage’s sleek profile and piercing visage help it stand out in a way that the previous model didn’t. With the pedal down the Vantage also does its best to impress, with a major assist from continental partner Mercedes-AMG, the provider of the beating V8 heart underneath its hood. This 4.0-liter, twin-turbo unit is tuned to offer 503 hp and 505 lb-ft of torque, numbers that are sent to the rearwheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission in the standard model, or a seven-speed manual in the clutch-equipped AMR. Even with a Mercedes motor pulling duty, the Aston Martin features a character all of its own. From the raucous thunder of its meticulously-crafted exhaust system to its ability to swap from smooth to stern at the push of a button (with Sport, Sport+, and Track settings for both the drivetrain and the suspension accessible via the steering wheel), the Vantage is a versatile performer that is just as content to cruise as it is to confront your next lap on a road course.
It’s that dual personality that helps make the coupe so compelling. Here is a car you could, quite conceivably, haul across the country from one coast to the other in absolute comfort, thanks to a cabin that provides enough real estate for even taller riders to stretch out during the drive. Throw in reasonable room under the hatch for an overnight bag or two (plus a trick folding shelf just behind the seats), and the call of the open road gets that much louder from behind the wheel of this Aston Martin. And yet at all times you still have access to 60mph in a mere 3.6 seconds from a standing start, which is more than enough to shake up any road trip monotony that may have crept in over too much Interstate. Combine that with a chassis that is willing to not only play, but also occasionally gracefully step out of line so that you may midcourse adjust in a fine display of tire smoke, and the Vantage makes an equally strong case for avoiding the straights and exploring something a little twistier on the way from east to west. The best part? You’re unlikely to meet yourself coming and going, as Aston Martin’s exclusivity makes it a far rarer sight on the road than the standard German sports car suit.
