We here at What’s On just love food. For years we’ve championed everything, from the finest of diners to the beefiest of burgers. If it’s in the city, we’ve hunted it down, tasted and rated it, and probably gone back for seconds, too. And that’s why we just love the What’s On Awards. Here we get to see where you – our lovely, wonderful, hungry readers – love to eat, too. Because our 48 trophies – from favourite brunch to business lunch and from favourite seafood to steakhouse – they are all voted for by you. Well, almost all of them; we get to choose four of the big winners, because we want to get involved, too. You can’t have all the fun. Check out the complete list of winners, including your favourites in the world of leisure, entertainment and attractions, from page 14. When we’re not dressed up and stuffing our faces, we need something to work off those excess kilos, and this month we’re off on an adventure around the UAE’s best nature spots (p38). If that fails to burn off the calories, a massive bike ride should do the trick. We’ve rounded up a few of the best routes, including the new stretch that connects Jumeirah Beach to Internet City. Read more on page 66, and then come find us on the track – we’ll be the chubby ones with a smile on our faces… Enjoy the issue,

Our wonderful team at the What’s On Awards. Don’t we scrub up well?

THIS MONTH WHAT’S ON LOVES… Haircuts and ice cream at… Chalk Great haircuts in Dubai aren’t hard to find. But a mirrored room with strobe lighting for before-andafter snaps, a retro ice cream machine whipping up soft serve, and a lovely Brazilian man named Paulo Sloboda who is practically a hair-cutting wizard? You’ll have to go to Chalk in Alserkal Avenue for that. @chalk – Laura Coughlin, Head of Content

Eating for Greece at… Myrra Greek has to be one of my favourite cuisines, which is no surprise given my undying love for cheese. Myrra offers a brilliant selection of Greek and Spanish dishes from its beachside location, served up with the same kind of warm hospitality you would expect in the Med. My must-try suggestions? The octopus with confit potatoes, the tuna carpaccio and the wagyu souvlaki. @myrrarestaurant

Staycationing offshore at…Anantara World Islands Dubai I get to do a lot of cool stuff in my job at What’s On, and being the first to check out new things is up there with the best bits. Last month, I checked-in to the first resort on the World Islands, a Thai-inspired paradise that joins Anantara’s already swoon-worthy collection of hotels. It’s easy to feel like you’ve left Dubai for the Maldives with its collection of private pool villas, tended to by villa hosts who are also on-hand to arrange floating breakfasts or a cosy cinema under the stars. It’s true weekend bliss. @anantaraworldislandsdubai – Alice Holtham, Group Digital Editor

Eating pretty incredible pizza at… Antonia

Though I was born and raised in the UAE, I still want to take time learning more about Emirati culture. During Ramadan, I will be attending the Ramadan Themed Weeks at Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) at the picturesque Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. An ‘Open Door, Open Minds’ policy, residents and tourists are invited to come together to enjoy iftar following an open discussion where any question – from Muslim faith to family values – can be asked all in an effort to gain knowledge and understanding. @smccudubai

We humans are an infinitely varied bunch and that leads to quite the subjectivity when it comes to liking things. While we’re never all going to see eye-to-eye on which restaurant serves the best pizza, I would like to suggest that you give Antonia at Mamsha Al Saadiyat a try. Its fluffy, 72-hour fermented Roman sourdough base, authentic Italian flavours and pizza available by the slice, has found no trouble topping my list of favourite UAE pizzerias, and it might just top yours, too. @antonia.uae

JARDEL SILVA EVENTS MAESTRO

Vuitton’s Cruise SS22 Trunk Show at The View at the Palm. Working with an iconic, luxurious brand forced me to understand different ways to design events. The trunk show was incredibly successful, which made me even more determined to show that anything is possible. Do you think being in the UAE has contributed to your success? Absolutely. Dubai has been the pinnacle of my success because it has emerged as one of the world’s leading destinations for events. Being available, responsive and showing up for high profile events whilst having strong connections has definitely contributed to my success. Who would be your dream client? Cristiano Ronaldo because he is innovative, powerful and influential, not only as the greatest footballer of all time, but as a role model for future

U

AE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…

“I CREATED A HEART-SHAPED STRUCTURE ON THE BURJ AL ARAB HELIPAD WITH A PIANO THAT WAS AIRLIFTED IN...” Your concepts are one-ofa-kind. What got you into event planning? During university, Jumeirah Group were recruiting Brazilian talent for the Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah. I moved to Dubai and worked my way up, and after four years I began working with a design company where I executed events for royalty. That’s where my passion for creating modern, ultra-chic events began. What’s been your most challenging project to date? I was hired to execute Louis

generations. He is constantly looking for new and creative ways to make the world a better place, and there is plenty we can all learn from him. Where in the UAE would you love to host an event, but haven’t yet?

The Museum of the Future because it is the future of events. The architecture enables me to think outside of the box and to create new designs and event concepts. What’s the most outrageous request you’ve had from a client? A client asked me to design an event for his wife’s birthday. I proposed the Burj Al Arab to the client. After receiving the permits from Dubai Holdings, I created a heart-shaped structure on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab with a walkway of red roses and a piano that had to be airlifted in. The dinner was topped off with a one-of-akind lighting show, as well as 200 drones and fireworks. What do you love about Dubai? It’s so inspiring. In the 13 years I have lived here, I’ve seen the growth of innovation in the city, which is very exciting. I love how safe the city is with so many interesting people to meet and new places to see. What stresses you out about the UAE? I have adapted to the rich culture, understood the way of life and followed the rules. I would love to grow and be part of this innovative city not only as a resident but also a citizen. Do you think Dubai will be your forever home? Dubai will always be the headquarters for Eventchic Designs and my dream to expand offices globally. Dubai will be my second home but Brazil will be my forever home.

RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR Trèsind Studio Kevin Joshi receives the coveted Restaurant of the Year award from Ian Fairservice

Say the name of this restaurant to any foodie in Dubai and they’ll wax lyrical about how it deserves a Michelin star. A recent relocation to a prime spot on The Palm means space for more diners, but still the same excellent service from staff who know the exquisite modern Indian menu back to front.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR SushiSamba Dubai

The Newcomer of the Year award is designed to celebrate a venue that sent shockwaves through the industry when it opened its doors. In the last 12 months, no restaurant has achieved this feat more than SushiSamba Dubai. The much-awaited launch was met with a fully booked restaurant up to six weeks in advance, and we truly believe it lives up to the hype.

The attention to detail at this Bluewaters Island restaurant is outstanding. From the tiles and the flowers lining the terrace to the music and the perfectly ironed tablecloths, nothing is left to chance. Easy ways to freshen up your life

T

here’s nothing better than a clear out at this time of year, but if you don’t know where to start, there are plenty of experts out there to help. And while you’re clearing out your home, why not clear your mind and treat yourself to some self-care, too? What’s On_35

Decluttering

DECLUTTER QUEEN

Shelina Jokhiya shares her declutter tips

1

Can you find it in five seconds? If you’ve ever wanted to streamline your stuff, and find the best ways to store and organise everything in your home, Shelina, founder of DeCluttr Me (decluttrme.com), recommends asking yourself a simple question: ‘Can you find what you need in five seconds or less?’ If not, it’s time for a sort out. Shelina first asks her clients about the areas in their home which are causing them the most stress and works on creating logical systems to enable them to access their things quickly – and ultimately find stuff in super quick time.

2

Sorting children’s clutter Kids accumulate a lot of toys and Shelina’s advice is to keep them on rotation (the toys, not the kids). Leave one or two toy boxes out for them to enjoy, and put the rest away in storage. Then swap the boxes at the end of the month. This keeps the kids interested and avoids the whole house turning into a playroom. With kids’ artwork, get rid of the ones you definitely don’t want and take pictures of the special pieces to put into a digital photo frame. That way you can appreciate them every day without them taking up space. 36_What’s On

Cleaning out your closet

Dite Grugule

3

4

Most of us only wear a small fraction of the contents of our closet while the rest gathers dust. A well-organised wardrobe brings you much more clarity, saves you time, and can save you money. Dubai-based celebrity stylist, Dite Grugule (@dite.grugule), says the best way do a successful wardrobe edit is to get everything out so you can see it and sort the items into three piles: keep, store, and donate. Keep anything that has sentimental value or makes you feel confident.

Thrift for Good Thrift for Good (thriftforgood. org) is a really cool charity shop that’s always on the lookout for new clothing, accessories and books to sell in its stores on Palm Jumeirah and Time Square Centre. The team advises an annual wardrobe edit to not only help you clear out items that you no longer wear, but also to help you curate the image of yourself that is constantly evolving and growing. But what should you throw out? Thrift’s team offers three suggestions: invite a ruthless friend round to help; invest in slimline velvet hangers to allow for as much space as possible in your wardrobe; and organise your clothes by category and then by colour so they’re easy to find.

THE BIG SPRING CLEAN

Free your mind Because a mental and emotional cleanse is as important

CONQUER YOUR BAD HABITS Whether it’s stopping smoking, healing your relationship with food or learning to manage anxiety, there’s a huge mental health support network in the UAE to help. Jenny Malem, owner of Open Minds Therapy (@openminds_therapy), helps others make healthy and long-lasting changes. Her top tip is: “If you want to quit any habit, you have to be honest with yourself and dig deep to find the real reason. Therapy helps you get you back to living the life you deserve.”

Cleaning hacks Keeping your home tip-top

MAKE SPACE The team at Mindful Me (mindfulme.me) recommends practicing mindfulness every day. It may be finding a quiet moment to breathe deeply and slowly, going for a barefoot walk on the beach or savouring a cup of tea. Whatever it is, do it with your full attention, and without judgement.

LET REIKI HEAL YOUR ENERGY Dina Ghandour (@wellnesswithdina), a level two practitioner, describes reiki as ‘a powerful natural healing technique, which replenishes vital energy in the body’. The practitioner places their hands close to or gently on the body to identify and release blockages. Reiki works at a physical, mental and emotional level to reduce stress, encourage relaxation and promote overall well-being. It’s deep and powerful stuff and the perfect remedy for a crowded mind.

FINDING STILLNESS… AT YOUR DESK 1. Feel your feet on the ground – the weight of them, the unique way you are balancing your weight 2. Slowly shift forward to your toes as you inhale 3. Slowly shift backward on your heels as you exhale 4. Make the movements subtle – no one else would even notice you doing it. Do about four breaths 5. Slow down the movement and find your centre balance 6. Give yourself a moment to feel the stillness

01 Disinfect your phone The average mobile phone has more germs living on it than a toilet seat (gross), but when was the last time you cleaned yours? Spray a little diluted Zoflora onto a dry cloth and use to gently wipe around your mobile phone. It kills 99.9 per cent of bacteria and viruses. zoflora.me 02 Ditch the toxins Most conventional cleaning products can be laden with harmful chemicals, and over time, these can lead to health issues varying in severity – from skin or respiratory issues to compromised immune systems and more. A much safer option is switching to non-toxic cleaners like

homegrown brand The Botanist – Dubai’s range of natural home cleaning products. thebotanistdubai.com 03 Dust often Studies show that building materials and consumer products shed harmful substances and, over time, traces of these chemicals accumulate in dust that settles in our homes, which can then be inhaled or swallowed. The Botanist Wood Duster captures and lifts dust particles from surfaces, rather then just moving it around the room. thebotanistdubai.com

Epic nature spots worth visiting in the UAE

38_What’s On

INTO THE WILD

Jubail Mangrove Park The stunning Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi is an absolute must-visit for nature-seekers. A meandering boardwalk will guide visitors on a nature trail through the mangroves near Yas Island. As well as the stunning nature walk, there are loads of activities for the whole family to get involved in, such as guided boardwalk tours (from Dhs50), kayak trips (Dhs100), and e-canoe tours (from Dhs80).

THIS WAY TO

Sir Bani Yas Island Have you ever wanted to wake up to an African dawn? Or dreamt of seeing gazelle nibbling the grass metres in front of where you sit with your morning cuppa, or watching a giraffe lazily munching the top of a tree just a few metres further away? Well, you can do all that at a place that’s only a road trip away. Many UAE residents are often surprised to learn that Abu Dhabi has a remote island housing 11,000 wild animals. Those who are in the know about Sir Bani Yas, however, will already appreciate the unique characteristics that make a 3.5-hour trip to the island feel more like a Kenyan escape than a staycation in the capital. A must-try is the nature and wildlife drive, which lasts about 90 minutes (Dhs320 per person) where your guide will show you the enormous range of wildlife roaming free on the island. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of cheetahs and get up close and personal with a friendly giraffe from within your open-top Land Cruiser. What’s On_39

INTO THE WILD

MASFOUT A 90-minute drive from the centre of Ajman, this tiny enclave is located in the rugged Hajar Mountains, flanked by Hatta, Ras Al Khaimah and Oman. It’s an off-the-beatentrack favourite for hiking and mountain biking, and the old fort is particularly interesting.

Love Lakes, Al Qudra Perhaps the most well-known man-made lakes in Dubai, the interlocking hearts of the Love Lakes have garnered plenty of interest and visitors since they were first revealed a few years ago. Whether you’re picnicking, walking or taking in the sunset, it’s certainly a wonderful UAE nature spot to do it in. Nearby at Al Qudra Lakes, you’ll find plenty of ducks and swans.

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary More than 20,000 birds inhabit Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and it’s perhaps most famous for its magnificent flock of flamingos. To see them, all you have to do is rock up to one of three viewing hides dotted around the perimeter of the sanctuary. Entrance is free and there are binoculars available to borrow, too.

Hatta Dam Believe it or not, this stunning turquoise dam is less than a two-hour drive from Dubai. To make the most of the calm waters, rent a kayak or pedal boat from Hatta Kayak. Alternatively, head for the hills on a hiking adventure and get ready for some breathtaking scenes. 40_What’s On

JEBEL JAIS The highest peak in the UAE at 1,934-metre, Jebel Jais is even occasionally dusted with snow. A switchback road snakes up the mountainside delivering vistas of barren, eroded cliffs, deep canyons and warped escarpments around every bend. There are pullouts for photograph-stops along the way, but for the ultimate panoramic mountain views, you’ll want to head up to 1484 by Puro restaurant near the summit. For a more upclose-and-personal mountain experience, Jebel Jais has its now-famous zipline, or you could try the brand new toboggan ride.

Al Qurm Nature Reserve Another stunning UAE nature spot is the natural mangrove forest in Al Qurm Nature Reserve, which you’ll find on the southern outskirts of Kalba village, on Sharjah’s east coast. The 500-hectare park of protected mangroves is home to species such as Arabian-collared kingfishers and hawksbill and green turtles. Enjoy guided kayak tours or go paddle-boarding around the area.

Fossil Rock One of the UAE’s most iconic natural wonders, Fossil Rock juts out of the desert and is riddled with corals and other marine creatures deposited here some 65 million years ago when the area was flooded by an ancient sea. Take a moment to soak in the spellbinding view of dunes and mountains unfolding before you as far as the eye can see, then take a trip to the Mleiha Archeological Centre to learn more about the area.

NEW!

Sharjah Safari Sharjah recently diversified its tourism opportunities with the addition of a huge safari park, which opened in February. Sharjah Safari, located within the Al Bridi Reserve in the city of Al Dhaid is 16 square kilometres, making it the largest safari project outside of Africa. Around 50,000 animals (120 species) call the safari home, including gazelles, giraffes, African wild turtles, crocodiles, lions, rhinos, African rock python, elephants and flamingos. The park has a large natural lake and 100,000 African trees, as well as restaurants, cafes, a safari visitors camp and more. q @shjsafari

WADI AL HAYL If you love nothing more than a challenging hike on a craggy, rocky natural landscape then popular nature spot Wadi Al Hayl might just be what you are looking for. Along the way, there’s plenty to see, from the Hayl Fort and Watchtower looking Northwest up Wadi Hayl, the dam in the Wadi Hayl, as well as birds and other native creatures.

MOONRISE

A revelation – and education – at this omakase hidden gem ubai restaurants talk a lot about ‘culinary journeys’ but that really is the only way to describe what you’ll experience at Moonrise. The unlicensed hidden gem is found on the rooftop of hip residential building, Eden House, near Satwa. It’s not an easy find, mind. Google Maps doesn’t quite bring you to the front door, so follow the directions given to you with your booking confirmation. Leading the show is Chef Solemann Haddad – a young, self-taught chef who was born and raised in Dubai. While his CV might be limited, his passion is boundless. Every night, he hosts a handful of guests for two seatings, serving up an ever-changing seasonal menu that painstakingly utilises the finest Asian and Middle Eastern ingredients to prepare his nightly meals.

D

44_What’s On

The eight-course menu (which changes dish by dish to create a new menu every three months) is kept under wraps until we arrive. We take a seat at the bar, overlooking the culinary team as they meticulously prepare each element. We’re given a brief yet passionate explanation of each dish and given the go-ahead when ready to tuck in. The first dish blew us away. We’re still trying to work out how such a small bite can pack in so much flavour. One of Moonrise’s signatures, the puri filled with foie gras, dates, saffron and pineapple chutney and aged Sichuan chili oil was layered in such a way that the flavours hit one wave after the other. Sweetness from the chutney gave way to a rich and nutty foie gras before ending in a hot kick of chilli oil. Plates grew in size as the meal continued, concluding with two generous portions of dessert, for which guests owe thanks to Chef Solemann’s “violent sweet tooth”. The ‘breakfast cereal’ was a nostalgic mix of caramelised white chocolate sorbet and caramelised milk crumble topped with olive oil powder. The intense sweetness balanced with

the crunchy crumble pieces offered a comforting, yet wildly indulgent bowl. The nature of this concept allows for minimal waste, as the kitchen prepares only what it needs for the number of people that booked. But you won’t go home hungry. On the contrary, we were forced to subtly unbutton our jeans after shamelessly polishing off every last bite of the meal. Moonrise is an exciting addition to Dubai’s restaurant scene for so many reasons. After firmly winning over the city’s local foodie crowd, the team of talented, passionate chefs are now ready to take on the mainstream. Word of mouth has spread to the point that the restaurant tends to get booked out a week in advance, which is hardly surprising since we’re already looking forward to our next visit. Bookings are made in advance online, and each seat is priced at Dhs475 including mocktails. a Moonrise, Eden House, Al Satwa, daily 7pm and 9.30pm, Dhs475. LUCIA’S

Lively Italian dining finds a home in Address Sky View... he traditional format of dining in Dubai has seen a shift in the last year, adding value through entertainment while maintaining quality when it comes to the menu. A menu which, of course, must be camera-friendly and designed to share, as per Dubai restaurant’s unofficial code of service. Lucia’s, however, takes it one step further, taking entertainment off the stage and around the tables through live music and staff involvement. Waiters wave giant Italian flags while waitresses slam tambourines and pull off high kicks to the beat of Bella Ciao. The lively Italian concept recently opened on the ground floor of Address Sky View, featuring an alfresco terrace adorned in trails of lemons and leaves transporting guests to the streets of Capri. Lucia’s indoor space is equally picturesque, and is perfect for the warmer months.

T

The menu offers a twist on classic Italian dishes, such as the burrata (Dhs95), which foregoes tomatoes for marinated roasted vegetables and olives. An interesting choice, which was perhaps not necessary but satisfied our hunger pangs all the same before we moved onto the trio di crudo platter (Dhs240). A large tray billowing with dry ice appears, sporting immaculately sliced raw fish from red snapper and tuna to salmon and oysters. Miniature bottles offer an olive oil and lemon mix that tick the aesthetic box. The real star of the culinary show is Lucia’s several pasta options, the stand-out winner being pappardelle al ragù D’Agnello e carciofi (Dhs80). The fresh homemade pasta strips provided a comforting base for 12-hour-slow-cooked lamb ragu doused in pecorino cheese. Another highlight was the fiorentina (Dhs990), a perfectly cooked 1.5kg steak, which offered both tender fillet on one side and succulent sirloin on the other. Finished with only salt and pepper from a small side bowl, we had no complaints

from our carnivorous table. Part-way through the meal, the sound and lighting crank up a notch, transforming the terrace into more of an outdoor club than a restaurant. Flashing red and green lights elevate the atmosphere and several diners are up on their feet, gleefully clapping to the tunes. For dessert we’re promised a ‘truly traditional’ tiramisù classico (Dhs85). The portion is definitely generous, and enough to share around the table. We would’ve preferred a stronger coffee flavour, but the consistency was spot on. Lucia’s might be new to the dining scene but certainly hasn’t come in quietly. The lively spot isn’t for the faint-hearted but definitely is for the hedonistic diners among us. a Lucia’s, Address Sky View, Downtown Dubai, daily 7pm to 9pm or 9.30pm til late. ORFALI BROS BISTRO Does this test kitchen deserve full marks?

t Orfali Bros in Wasl 51, each dish comes with a commentary and instructions on how to eat it (a theme it seems this month. See p44). Somehow though, it manages to improve the experience, rather than make you squeeze the edge of your seat until your knuckles are white. Early on, Mohamad Orfali, a roundshouldered man with a gentle demeanor that makes you feel like everything is going to be OK, delivers a flat-topped ceramic stone to the table. A splodge of truffle mayo keeps a handsome golden ball from rolling off . The OB croquettes (Dhs19 for one), we are told, have been created using unique ingredients. “It’s Spanish, but we’ve ‘Orfali-fied’ it with celeriac and comté to give it an incredible depth of flavour,” says Mohamad, cheerfully. He’s not wrong: it’s crisp, heart-warming, and we yearn for one more. We’re here at Orfali Bros – the family name of the brothers who own it – soon after it earned a place on MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants list in February. A coveted spot at number six, beating off stiff competition from restaurants such as Gaia and both Coyas. It was a great achievement for a homegrown restaurant, proving that talent like theirs is being

A

celebrated. After our first dish – enjoyed “in three to four mouthfuls” – we can see why. The croquettes were followed by dishes that largely riffed off a Middle Eastern repertoire, though each with their own idiosyncrasies. The spicy burghul tabbouleh (Dhs47) used Aleppo chilli paste, tomato and puffed burghul, but we constructed them into ‘mini tacos’ using shiso leaves rather than the standard cabbage. Their ‘Come with me to Aleppo’ kebabs (Dhs95) are given a slight upgrade with wagyu beef and a hint of cinnamon. Quality beef is always a good thing, as is the tart sour cherry ketchup and crunchy pine nuts sprinkled on top. The star dish was the shish barak a la gyoza (Dhs65), a lovely Asia-meets-Middle East combo. Handsome parsels, lightly fried on one side and gently steamed on the other, then filled with wagyu beef and a spicy Sichuan sujuk chilli oil hybrid in a puddle of cold garlic yoghurt. There is also a selection of

pides served five ways. We tried the burnt leeks and truffle iteration (Dhs95) – a boat-shaped pizza using sourdough, brown butter, onion and Stracciatella. While tasty, it’s too similar to some of the truffle pizzas around town. Next time, we’ll hit up the cheese pide with chives and egg. At the end, there are a handful of dessert options – the fruits of Mohamad’s pastry chef brothers Omar and Wassim. A Ferrero Rocher cane, mandarinshaped rice pudding; and ‘proudly Syrian’ pistachio cake. They are sweet delights. As reviews go, this has to be one of the most detailed about the food, but Orfali Bros warrants it. We’ve not talked about location or ambiance (though, you can file both under: wonderful). Just know this, the Orfali Bros’ cooking makes for a thrilling dining experience, and one we look forward to enjoying again. a Wasl 51, Sun to Sat noon to midnight. Nette has opened inside the beautiful grounds of Matcha Club in Al Quoz, and is the gorgeous new sister café to Cassette. The outdoor courtyard at Nette is a real selling point. Alo-clad yogis are mingling pre- and post- classes; sweatband-ready padel players saunter past towards their courts; while spritely young families jostle for a nice booth in the shade. It’s alive with shiny, happy people who probably prefer to spend Saturdays in savasana or smashing serves than attacking the brunch buffet. Onto the food and you’ll notice that Nette leans towards Japanese ingredients – a nod to the name of the wellness club it’s housed within. There’s a Japanese breakfast skillet with miso dressing (Dhs62) served with sweet potato, shitake mushroom, ginger and kale. seaweed salad sarnies and miso seared tuna salad bowls. Those don’t sound like your brekkie favourites but, judging by the empty plates heading back to the kitchen, they’re a hit among diners. The miso Benedict (Dhs68) has all the components of a good Bene, plus a few extra ingredients that don’t detract from the good stuff: a hollandaise with a light whiff of miso, two eggs that ooze nicely over toasted sourdough, and a sprinkling of dried capers to give it a salty boost. Meanwhile, our dining partner – a yogi, go figure – has been a fan of the strawberry Matcha açai bowl (Dhs56) since Nette opened. It’s packed with all that nutrient-dense purple goodness you’d hope for, plus banana, strawberry, blueberry, almond milk, flaxseed, and topped with homemade granola, and chia and sunflower seeds. Do the satisfying dishes and vibe at Nette mean we’re changing our weekend ways in exchange for outdoor padel and overnight oats? No, it just suggests that there are alternatives, and very good ones at that. a Nette at Matcha Club, Al Quoz, daily 8am to 10pm. Tel: (0)4 548 8369. @nettedxb

NONYA

A stylish new spot takes pan-Asian fare to new heights in JLT ou need to be smart when designing a restaurant the size of Nonya. Occupying the entire 44th floor of the Taj JLT, it’s cleverly split into a series of smaller spaces, which means that no matter where you’re sitting you feel like you’re somewhere intimate and inviting. Private dining rooms are discreetly tucked behind glittering gold curtains, a horseshoeshaped bar leads to a colourful lounge, and glass doors give way to little, leafy terraces where guests can dine against the backdrop of the looming city skyline. Initially, Nonya was positioned as Singaporean, but has since migrated to describing itself as pan-Asian, which feels more reflective of the menu. Maki rolls sit alongside dim sum, a dedicated robata section and a whole page of meat and seafood dishes. We start with satay ayam (Dhs75) – crispy chicken cooked in punchy Malaysian spices that falls tenderly off the skewers, and we delight in dunking each one in a creamy satay sauce. The California maki rolls (Dhs75) are a bit more style over substance: a bit on the dry side, and topped with too much tobaiko for our taste. The next round of dishes arrives – all fresh from the robata grill. Hokkaido scallops (Dhs120) are lacking in flavour when eaten on their own, but fare far better when dipped in the evidently

Y

well-perfected satay sauce. The lamb chops (Dhs145) are much tastier, while the broccolini (Dhs55) has the perfect crunch, and a welcome nod of spice from the fresh chillis on top. Our favourite dish of the night is the half-roasted Peking duck (Dhs225). It’s executed with the expertise of a very experienced chef, and served with cucumber matchsticks, a thick hoisin sauce and a stack of soft, steaming pancakes. Although there’s room for improvement, it’s not a bad start for Nonya. Staff are friendly, portion sizes far outweigh much of the competition, and it’s hard to beat the terrace views in that part of town. a 44th Floor, Taj Jumeirah Lakes Towers, 6pm to 1am Sun to Thurs, 6pm to 2am Fri, 1pm to 2am Sat. tashas opens new cafe in Mirdif A new branch of the cult lifestyle café has just opened in Mirdif. This marks the sixth branch of tashas in the UAE and promises to be a home away from home for the local community. MEET THE CHEF

BOONTHARIYA AUMPAN Top chef at Charm Thai Restaurant The first dish I ever made was a Thai omelette – that’s just eggs and soy sauce. I was five years old. My family is very orthodox and for them, women need to know how to cook. My first guru was my teacher Chef Aek at the University of Suan Dusit Rajabhat. I then started following Chef David Thompson – my ‘batchmates’, and I think of him as the father of Thai cuisine. I believe in authenticity. My goal is Thai modern, not fusion. I don’t believe in fusions. Simplicity with taste is the way to success. I couldn’t live without chilli. My grandfather says the spicier the better. I love cooking for my grandfather. He is a huge fan of my cooking and also my biggest critique. I am proud of what I am thanks to him. Ninety-nine per cent of the time I eat Thai. I feel homesick if I don’t eat it. My last supper would be a panang curry with tiger prawns, pickled watermelon skin, lime leaves and sweet basil. I’d have a feast at home with my family. a Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina, 7am to 1am. IFTAR SPOTLIGHT

Ramadan favourites at Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates Picking the right iftar for your friends and family to enjoy can be tough. Especially in Dubai where options abound. But if you’re after a fail-safe option, one that offers that all important big buffet to help break fast, Olea at the five-star Kempinski Mall of the Emirates is a great shout. Olea champions Levantine cuisine with a range of dishes that span the region from Syria, Palestine, Jordan and beyond. An oud player provides the soothing background soundtrack to the evening. The all-you-can-eat buffet brags a vast appetiser selection that includes soups, shawarma rolls, mini-samosas, cheese rakakat and manakeesh, while cold starter options (which rotate every three days) include dishes such as cobb salad, tabouleh quinoa, fatoush, spicy Thai salad, Turkish kisir and so much more. Look out for the dedicated bread station where you can pair with a variety of cheese and dips. Options on mains will also change every three

days, but on our preview visit, we enjoyed braised lamb shank, seafood fried noodles, Mediterranean chicken, sea bass harra and shrimp mutaffa. For fans of Indian food, there’s a section featuring popular dishes such as daal masala, butter chicken, vegetable biryani, lamb kofta and aloo gobi. Finally, over at the dessert station, our plate was stacked high full of cakes, macaroons and tarts with another plate featuring a range of Middle Eastern favourites, including kunafa, umm Ali, and baklava. A traditional dondurma vendor is also at the restaurant. An iftar evening isn’t complete with a selection of Ramadan juices, of which there is a vast selection, including Vimto and jallab, a fruit syrup made from dates, grape molasses and rose water. a Olea, Kempinski Mall of the Emirates, Al Barsha, sunset to 9pm, Dhs250 per person. DHOW AND ANCHOR Come for a British lunch, stay for sundowners and iconic views

ince the weekend shifted in the UAE, we’ve been finding new ways to spend our Sundays, and you couldn’t really get a much better spot than the D&A terrace, which overlooks the Burj Al Arab and sits on the ground floor of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Now we know it’s always tempting to try somewhere new and shiny, but places like D&A have a habit of attracting the punters back time and time again, for good reason. We settle at our table on the shady terrace and chose a few bits from the ‘small plates’ menu to start. Here’s a heads up – don’t be fooled by the name as the plates may be small

but the portions are not. We tuck in to Angus beef sliders (Dhs65), fish fingers and tartare sauce (Dhs50), fried chicken (Dhs55), onion bhajis (Dhs45) and chips and curry sauce (Dhs40). On hindsight, maybe we over-ordered slightly but this is a great sharing concept for a laid-back feast with friends. If we had to choose just one thing to have again, it would be the succulent D&A fried chicken with chilli sauce and guac. There’s a cracking roast option (served every day), but we’re in the mood to check out some other dishes. What’s cool about the menu is that they manage to keep it really simple while also offering a variety of options to keep everyone happy. From fish ‘n’ chips, pies and a ‘Ruby Murray’ all the way to plant-based burgers and bangers and mash, it’s full of comforting British classics, done right. For the main event, we go for the beef pie (Dhs125), which is fully encased in

golden shortcrust pastry and packed with chunks of soft meat and veg which is delicious with a good lug of traditional gravy served on the side. We also can’t resist the rack of melt-in-the-mouth BBQ ribs (Dhs125) with crunchy wasabi slaw and hand-cut chips. There’s no time (or space in our jeans) for dessert but you can’t help but while away the afternoon here. This stalwart pub has been on the Dubai scene for much longer than most of us and it’s easy to see why. It’s hard to beat the quality of food, the friendly service that makes you feel like you’re a regular, and of course that view. a Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Mon to Sun 12pm to 12am. NEW RELEASES

Magical Law While Harry Potter is the reason the Wizarding World mythology came into existence, Albus Dumbledore is one of the magical franchise’s most important supporting protagonists. In addition to the elder Dumbledore providing counsel through the original Harry Potter movies, his younger self, played by Jude Law, has played an integral role in the Fantastic Beasts movies. That continues in the aptly-titled Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and Law has reflected on what it’s like to play this character.

On the character “What a privilege it is to play Albus Dumbledore. One of the world’s most powerful wizards. A man who believes in the good in people and someone quick to offer wise, if not cryptic, words of advice.”

DIRECTOR: David Yates CAST: Jude Law, Mads Mikkelsen, Eddie Redmayne, Jessica Williams, Katherine Waterston

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore The mythical franchise continues

Set several years after the events of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, (but decades before the original Harry Potter films), this latest release sees beloved wizard Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) task magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave muggle baker on a dangerous mission that takes them into the heart of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald’s (played by Mads Mikkelsen who replaces Johnny Depp) army. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

On living up to expectations “I wasn’t even thinking about the pressure. We’re not trying to recreate the 110-year-old Dumbledore.”

On growing a beard “We were meant to start filming the day London went into lockdown. I thought maybe I should shave off the beard, but I couldn’t bear going through the ‘two-week burn’ again. I have a lot more grey hairs than the first movie that’s for sure...”

CULTURE

The Northman DIRECTOR: Robert Eggers CAST: Alexander Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke, Nicole Kidman “I will avenge you, father. I will save you, mother. I will kill you, Fjolnir.” These are the only tasks on Alexander Skarsgård’s mind as the burly Big Little Lies star transforms into a vengeance-seeking viking in The Northman. It’s a story told through the eyes of Amleth (Skarsgård), who witnesses the murder of his father, King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke), at the hands of his uncle, Fjolnir (Claes Bang). With his mother, Queen Gudrun (Nicole Kidman), captured, Amleth flees his native land. But he vows revenge on the one who took everything from him.

Morbius DIRECTOR: Daniel Espinosa CAST: Jared Leto, Burk Sharpless, Jared Harris, Matt Smith Ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius (Jared Leto) attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease. 62_What’s On

The Contractor DIRECTOR: Tarik Saleh CAST: Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Gillian Jacobs, Kiefer Sutherland After being involuntarily discharged from the US special forces, James Harper (Chris Pine) decides to support his family by joining a private contracting organisation alongside his best friend (Ben Foster) and under the command of a fellow veteran (Kiefer Sutherland). Overseas on a covert mission, Harper must evade those trying to kill him while making his way back home.

Better Nate Than Ever Movie DIRECTOR: Tim Federle CAST: Norbert Leo Butz, Aria Brooks, Joshua Bassett, Marc Platt, Lisa Kudrow Middle-schooler Nate Foster has big Broadway dreams. There’s only one slight problem – he can’t even land a part in the school play. But when his parents leave town, Nate and his best friend Libby sneak off to the Big Apple for a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to prove everyone wrong. A chance encounter with Nate’s longlost Aunt Heidi (Lisa Kudrow) turns his journey upside-down, and together they must learn that life’s greatest adventures are only as big as your dreams.

NEW ON NETFLIX

Bridgerton [NEW SERIES] Netflix’s resident Regency-era romance series is back for more melodrama. This time around, the show follows the eldest Bridgerton, Anthony, on his own quest for a wife. The classic rom-com trope this time sees Anthony’s fiancée’s disapproving and very protective older sister reluctantly warming up to him, but perhaps a little too much so.

Anatomy of a Scandal [NEW SERIES] Based on the bestselling novel by Sarah Vaughan, Anatomy of a Scandal follows James (Rupert Friend), a parliament minister who is thrust into the spotlight when something from his past comes to light. Of course, his family, including wife Sophie (Sienna Miller), are caught in the crosshairs. Add Michelle Dockery as a prosecutor in James’s case and the drama unfolds. What’s On_63

Amazing AlUla Get ready to discover a side of Saudi that promises to wow all intrepid explorers

A

lUla’s significance as a crossroads of ancient civilisations dates back thousands of years. While it’s largely remained off-limits to the public, that changed in 2020 when AlUla opened some of its sights to visitors for the first time. Since then, the historic town of AlUla, located 1,040 68_What’s On

kilometres northwest of Riyadh, has been transforming into an incredible open-air museum. It has built on its storied past to carve a future filled with resorts and glamping retreats create into the desert landscape, restaurant pop-ups aplenty and festivals that celebrate the rich history, art and culture of the region.

THE TO-DO LIST

Pay a visit to Al Jadidah, where old meets new The latest addition to AlUla’s growing number of attractions is AlJadidah, which has been transformed into a pedestrianised hub for art, culture and dining. It’s easy to walk around the entire of AlJadidah, meaning ‘new town’ in Arabic, which has been cleverly divided around five separate squares. Overlooking AlUla Old Town, highlights include Oasis Square, where live musicians entertain those that gather; Moayadah Square, with its array of street food vendors and food trucks; and Art Square, home to Cinema Al Housh, AlUla’s first arthouse cinema, showing an array of English and Arabic independent films

Check out the dazzling Maraya Hall A Guinness World Recordbreaking venue, AlUla’s Maraya Hall is an architectural feat, and officially recognised as the world’s largest mirror clad building. The 500-seater concert hall has already played host to stars including Enrique Iglesias, Alicia Keys, Lionel Richie and Andrea Bocelli.

Watch the sun set at Jabal AlFil (Elephant Rock) There are a whole host of sunset spots across AlUla, but Jabal AlFil – commonly known as Elephant Rock – is one of the best places in AlUla to watch the day turn to night. In front of the looming Jabal AlFil, given its moniker thanks to its size and shape, is an array of sunken seating carved into the sand, plus bean bags and benches, giving visitors a front row seat to watch the sun dip behind the famous geological formation. It’s free to enter, and there’s now even a Salt food truck located within the grounds, alongside a coffee shop.

Take a tour of Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in a vintage Land Rover Hegra was the first site in Saudi Arabia to be inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008 (a further five have since been added). There’s a collection of 110 tombs to discover that date back some 2,500 years. Some tombs are better preserved than others, but decoration and inscriptions are all visible. The best way to maximise your trip is with a local Rawi as your guide in a vintage Land Rover, which stops at five key sights over a two-hour tour. What’s On_69

WHERE T O S TAY Habitas AlUla For only its third property in the world, boutique eco-retreat Habitas made roots in the Ashar Valley of AlUla. Complete with 95 villas dotted across the vast desert landscape, rooms are set between manmade dunes for optimum privacy, and many feature epic mountain views from their private terraces. The best way to get around is on an electric bike, and there’s something truly freeing about whizzing through the valley that way (although there are buggies too for those looking to give their legs a rest). The main restaurant, Tama, which means ‘here and now’, is designed as a space for bringing guests together, with big lounge spaces and lots of long tables for dining with groups of guests. On the menu, nourishing dishes are globally influenced with a strong Middle Eastern presence, and ingredients sourced from local farms take centre stage. There are a separate, open-air seating space, which leads out to a shimmering infinity pool: it’s the perfect spot to dip between the water and the relaxing ambience of the lounge. Habitas started as a community-focused series of events, so it makes sense that there’s plenty of other gathering spaces too, including the glass-lined reception, a lounge and coffee bar and a shala as part of the wellness offering where breathing and meditation workshops take place. Installations originally commissioned for the first Desert X AlUla are also shaped into the resort offering, allowing guests to ignite their inner child with a giant swing set backdropped by huge rock formations and trampolines hidden in the desert sands. q ourhabitas.com

LASTMINUTE TRIP Banan Beach is equal parts chill beach hangout, glamping perks and DIY dining If you’re scouting the UAE for a beachy getaway, there’s a decent chance you’re flipping between The Palm (Dubai), Saadiyat Island (Abu Dhabi), or maybe even a drive to Ajman, and if you’re looking for a luxury splash, that’s the right track to be on. But when you’d rather a more boho getaway (with your four-legged pal in tow, perhaps), take a savvy step over to Banan Beach in Ras Al Khaimah instead.

The look and feel Sure, Ras Al Khaimah has those glitzy fivestar resorts we all adore, but Banan Beach is a mini-hippy village in itself. Guests ride around – past painted murals and huge 1,000-year-old olive trees – on rickety old trikes. Among the blue and white facades, you’ll spot a little supermarket and a butcher’s, then there’s an outdoor bar and restaurant with rotisserie chicken spinning over an open fire.

Facilities and activities There’s an adult pool, a family pool and fire pits (where guests gather at sunset for ridiculously delicious hot chocolates stuffed with toasted marshmallows). There are hammocks where guests sway to the DJs’ beach tunes, a line of rustic cabanas looking out to sea, and a cluster of A-frame wooden chalets ranging from two-person ‘small tents’, larger ‘loft tents’ to the biggest threeroomed ‘chalets’. For the lower end ‘tents’, you’ll find communal showers in the centre of the campground. There’s also a barbecue area for guests to DIY their own meals.

The rooms There are three types of accommodation to choose from: Small Tents – This is the most basic 74_What’s On

“RAK HAS THOSE GLITZY FIVE-STAR RESORTS, BUT BANAN BEACH IS A MINI HIPPY VILLAGE.” option. There are 50 beach camp ‘tents’, with one double-sized bed inside each, plus two deckchairs outside. You’ll be using the communal showers and bathrooms. Loft Tents – This is the mid-range option. There are 12 two-bedroom ‘loft tents’, each with two double beds and one bathroom per loft, plus a seating and barbecue area outside. Chalets – This is the top-end option. There are 10 three-bedroom chalets, with three separate en-suite double rooms, plus your own private pool, swing, bar, barbecue area and fridge.

The food and drink When it comes to food, there are two options. Either you order from the alfresco restaurant, which serves up a range of authentic Palestinian cuisine as well as pizzas, salads and amazing burgers with

caramelised onions, or you can head to the BBQ area and do it yourself. There’s also a bar by the pool where you can order drinks. We opted for dinner at the restaurant, but made breakfast ourselves with the much-appreciated aid of the Banan Beach culinary crew. Everything is ready for you: pots, pans, fresh veggies, eggs, spices, bagels, even your own grilling station complete with chopping boards and knives, it’s all prepped for you to get stuck in.

The room rates The ‘Small Tents’ prices start from Dhs300 for two people; ‘Loft Tents’ start at Dhs950 for four people; and ‘Chalets’ start at Dhs1,950 for six people. All include DIY breakfast. a Banan Beach, Ras Al Khaimah.

KNOW YOUR STUFF

About Ramadan

Ramadan is expected to begin on April 2, with Eid Al Fitr celebrations commencing on May 2. But what does it all mean? Here’s all you need to know

What is Ramadan? The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a time when Muslims around the world abstain from eating, drinking or smoking between sunrise and sunset. Lasting about a month, it marks the time when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Extra tarawih prayers are performed at the mosque throughout Ramadan and each evening 1/30th of the holy book is recited. By the end of Ramadan, observers have read the entire Qur’an. Why is Ramadan so important to Muslims? Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, considered mandatory by believers. The pillars are the framework by which Muslims everywhere live, and Ramadan is considered the holiest time in the Islamic calendar. It is a time for prayer, reflection and 6 | RAMADAN GUIDE 2022

religious devotion, to cleanse past sins and to focus on Allah through good deeds. Why do Muslims fast? Fasting, or sawn, loosely translates as ‘to refrain’. So during Ramadan Muslims commit to not eating, drinking or smoking during daylight hours. But sawn isn’t just about physical restraint, it also refers to bad thoughts, actions and words. Ramadan is often a time to spend with family, breaking fast at sunset. The fast itself is intended to help Muslims learn about selfdiscipline and enable them to empathise with those who have less.

RAMADAN GUIDE 2022 | 7

KNOW YOUR STUFF Must everyone fast? For Muslims, everyone is required to fast, but there are exceptions. Young children, pregnant women and the elderly and infirm are not required to fast due to possible health complications. Women on their monthly cycle do not fast, nor do people who are ill. If there is a temporary break in the fast, Muslims are required to make up the missing days after Ramadan. Non-Muslims are not required to fast. However, they should behave sensitively throughout Ramadan, which means no eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours. Does everything close during the day? Most restaurants remain open

during Ramadan, but may have shorter opening times so it’s best to call ahead at the venue. The places that are open during the daytime may have curtains or panels in place to conceal people eating and drinking from those fasting. Everything tends to happen much later in the day during Ramadan. Malls close even later than usual. Do I need to do anything differently during the day? It’s important for everyone to dress and behave appropriately during the Holy Month. Even those who aren’t fasting should make sure that their clothes are modest, covering shoulders, chest and knees. Keep music levels down to a minimum and, of course, no public displays of affection.

Ramadan glossary IFTAR The meal at sunset when Muslims break their daytime fast SUHOOR Technically the meal before sunrise before Muslims start fasting. Much more laid back than iftar, suhoor often starts late at night and runs into the early hours of the morning
