I AM A TYPICAL MIDDLE CHILD

EDITOR’S PICKS

Liv Round Crystal Bag, Beyond The Beach Dhs595, sanddollardubai.com

I’m fiercely independent, possibly a bit rebellious, and I love proving people wrong, all bi-products of being raised sandwiched between two sisters with personalities as large as my own.

My quest to prove people wrong, particularly about Dubai, is one I take enormously seriously. The narrative about Dubai – where everyone drives around in gold Bugatti’s, spends weekends hopping from private yachts to five-star hotels, and there’s nothing more to the city’s DNA than flashy malls and soaring skyscrapers – is one I find particularly frustrating. Because anyone who’s spent more than five minutes in Dubai will know that this portrayal of the city is not only singular, but it’s false. Dubai has worked hard to become a destination with year-round, multi-generational appeal, and I happen to think it’s done that remarkably well. Where else can you drive out for a morning in the mountains, keep cool on the slopes through the afternoon and then round-out the day with toes-in-the-sand sundowners?

As visitor season kickstarts again, we’ve done the hard work for you by planning some famtastic days out designed to suit all ages. These all-age-encompassing day trips encourage you to pack up the car and head to pastures new around the UAE. We supply the itinerary, you’re in charge of the road trip snacks and tunes. But if you want to keep things closer to home, we’ve got you covered too, with plenty of family-focused fun to be had right here in the city. Start making plans from p19.

Another feature of Dubai I adore at this time of year, is the string of major music events that take over the city. From rockers to rappers and retro boybands, get ready to dance your way through the month with our gig guide from p27.

Enjoying a taste of the high life at… Address Beach Resort

Address Beach Resort’s 77th floor rooftop infinity pool is a show-stopping Guinness World Record holder. Book a cabana to access the infinity pool, and it comes with access to a lounge-style retreat from the heat. The Asian fusion menu (try the grilled lobster), excellent selection of chilled rosé, and top-notch service make this one of the city’s most wow-worthy pool days. @addressbeachresort

Adding to my reading list with… Kinokuniya

The decision to plonk the Kinokuniya bookstore right opposite the Dubai Mall Metro Link Bridge was a smart one. I have enough in my ‘left unread’ pile as it is, but Kinokuniya’s pull resulted in me leaving with yet another book. National Treasures – Saving the nation’s art in World War II by Caroline Shenton. It’s about a daring plan to save important art collections during the invasion of Poland in 1939.

@bookskinokuniyauae

Adding to my sneaker collection with… Nike

Shelby’s Law – if I see a pair of kicks I like, I’ll probably end up buying them. Last weekend my brother and I rushed down to the Nike store in Dubai Mall to snag an official South Africa Rugby World Cup jersey and once they were in the cart, I moseyed over to the women’s shoe section and instantly fell in love with a silky white and green pair of low dunks. Oops, and into the cart they fell. @nike

Enjoying an evening of stellar food at… Moonrise

Here at What’s On, we love supporting homegrown businesses. And Michelin-Starred Moonrise has been on my list for a while. Chef Solemann’s 11-course tasting menu is a creative representation of the city’s culinary scene. Highlight? The ‘grilled cheese.’ Don’t ask, just try. One of my most memorable dining experiences in Dubai. @moonrise.xyz

– Tamara Wright, Online Reporter

Minami Jazz Night at luscious Japanese haunt Mimi Kakushi is every bit as charming as it sounds. Sitting there tapping my toes to the band’s joyous, jazzy tunes, I felt a little bit like a fly on the wall, but in the best way possible. I was in profound admiration of them doing their thing. Inspired by the echoing jazz strains of 1920’s Osaka, the cocktail menu is a thing of beauty and genius of its own. @mimikakushi

LIVE LOVE

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Through MY EYES Loujain Adada

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to family-friendly spots they adore, must-try restaurants and standout attractions. This month, we chat to Loujain Adada (@loujainaj), entrepreneur, mother and star of Dubai Bling. Here she shares some of her favourite spots that you need on your radar.

I love Nobu, the high-end Japanese restaurant at Atlantis, The Palm. I fell in love with the style and atmosphere of the restaurant – and the food is fantastic too. I like to go with my daughters. Another restaurant I love is Fouquet’s, it has the best French food in the city and reminds me of Paris and Cannes where we usually spend our summers. And I love Lucia’s for Italian food.

@nobudubai, @fouquets.dubai, @luciasdubai

Atlantis The Royal is my favourite place for a UAE staycation – I’ve been so many times with my kids, we consider it our second home. We’ve shared many happy memories at this resort. For family getaways, be sure to check out Aquaventure. It’s the world’s largest waterpark and has loads of fun attractions.

@atlantistheroyal

One of my favourite places to chill out in the city is Summersalt beach club at Jumeirah Al Naseem. You can often find me here on weekends, catching up with friends and enjoying a fun, relaxing weekend.

@summersaltbeachclub

Everyone should visit Dubai Parks and Resorts. There are two theme parks and a waterpark in one, so it’s great for families as there’s a variety of attractions for all tastes and ages.

@dubaiparksresorts

I head to W Hotel - Mina Seyahi when I want to disconnect and get pampered. I like their Bar-B spa and gym – I’m very enthusiastic about working out. It’s not only healthy for the body but also good for the mind, it helps you relax. At the end of the day, health is wealth.

@wdubaiminaseyahi

I recently discovered the charms of Ras Al Khaimah. It’s a unique part of the UAE and full of adventure. Visit the Hajar mountains for active attractions such as hiking, zip lining, and cycling; or the stunning beachfront resorts to relax.

Hatta

High up in Dubai’s swathe of the Hajar mountains the, now confirmed as recordbreaking, big white Hatta sign serves as a beacon to the UAE’s adventure-seekers and escapade-curious. Come for the day and experience wadi-hikes, kayaking trips, horse riding, mountain biking, zip-lining, axe-throwing, archery, zorbing, climbing, bodyboarding and a rucksack more alfresco fun. There’s a lot to do, so if you fancy making it a weekend trip, your stay options run from camping to star-gazing-enabled bubble domes; there’s luxury on tap at JA Hatta Fort Hotel; mountain terrace lodges at Damani Lodges Resort, and retro Sedr trailers for a bit of rustic ‘Gram-fit glam. visithatta.com

Hudayriyat Island

Just a short drive away from Abu Dhabi city’s Al Bateen Beach, over the humpback bridge, lies Hudayriyat. The island-sized activity hub from developers Modon, offers a feisty ensemble of alfresco active adventures such as the shiny new Trail X, a 15km long mountain biking trail. Some are paid attractions, such as the Circuit X skate park, splash park and OCR Obstacle Course. Others such as the bike parks, public beach, outdoor gym, Heritage Walk and overwater cycling track, are free. Staying for longer? There’s a mega cute glamping experience, Bab Al Nojoum, with beachfront pitches and AirStream trailers. hudayriyatisland.ae

*David Attenborough voice* “Here, all of the animals are kept safe in their own enclosures, all except the world’s most fearsome predator... Man”. If you like getting right up in the whiskery face of nature, Dubai Safari delivers close-clawed and cuddly encounters with an incredibly diverse diaspora of wildlife. The 119-hectare site houses 3,000 animals. There are 78 species of mammal, 50 forms of reptile, and more than 100 brands of bird. Admission packages start at Dhs50 for adults (Dhs30 for under 12s), it’s divided into four different villages and offers immersive experiences, such as a Kids’ Farm and the on-rail Safari Journey, to help you live your best Our Planet life.

Khorfakkan

Sharjah might not be top of everyone’s list for weekend exploration, but allow us to expat-splain one of many reasons it should be. Khorfakkan, found along the picturesque eastern coast of the emirate, offers up a collection of attractions that blend culture and nature, alongside a dusting of artisanal farm-tomouth grandeur. Like many of the UAE’s outdoorsy hot spots, trail-treading (along with biking and horse galloping) is chief amongst the recommended activities (check out Shees Park, and the Rabi Trail), but if little feet get too tired you could always head to the beach; dine out at statement restaurants such as The View by Wave; make a trip to the ominoussounding Shark Island. Too sharky? Attractive trip pivots are available at Al Rabi Tower, Al Rafisah Dam and the iconic amphitheatre for entertainment under the stars. And you’ll soon be able to take a well-deserved chill stop at Khorfakkan Hotel, Autograph Collection. It’s set to be an absolute stunner. visitsharjah.com

Mushrif Park

Long time top pick for picnics, Dubai’s Mushrif Park is all about wide open spaces and ghaf tree-shaded places. The Park offers a 20km cycling loop, and a 10km hike that wends through leafy canopy tunnels, striking sculptures and a finish line reward of Al Khawaneej Walk, a leisure space with Last Exit food trucks and shiny shopping detours. Aventura offers opportunities to scramble like a spider monkey, dangle from zip lines, and work your way around challenging rope courses (from Dhs165). Far enough removed from city lights, Mushrif is well known for its winter star-gazing credentials, and population of indigenous wildlife that make the perfect eye candy for I-spying ramblers.

aventuraparks.com

Jebel Jais

If Ras Al Khaimah had a spirit animal, it would be a bear. More specifically, it would be Bear Grylls – not least because there’s a survivalist camp there (majoring in such key life skills as wadi treks, bushcraft and ravine-rappelling) with his name attached to it. But for something that still has the same quota of outdoorsy ‘arrrgh’ vibes but with a more family-friendly edge to it, try Jais Adventure Parks. There you’ll find the Jais Sledder (adult and child combo from Dhs60) – a white-knuckle, 1,840m mountainside toboggan ride, that squeaks through the peaks of the Hajar range at up to 40kph. After, we recommend recalibrating at 1484 By Puro. At one and a half kilometres above sea level, it’s the UAE’s highest restaurant, they do a banging Thai beef salad, and the views aren’t half bad either. visitjebeljais.com

Snoopy Island

Snoopy Island is one of Fujairah’s best-loved landmarks and is named after the famous dog, the cartoon, not the rapper, which the island is said to resemble. It’s a true maritime paradise offering some of the best ‘sightseaing’ in the UAE. The natural reefs provide a home for a kaleidoscopic clique of fishy friends, visiting turtles, and even the odd white-tip reef shark. On a day trip to Snoopy Island, the whole family can mask up for a team snorkel, or stay above the surface for an afternoon of paddle boarding or kayaking – the gear for all of which can be rented from the shore. Those looking to make a weekend of it can check-in to Sandy Beach Hotel, the legendary Fujairah resort that sits smack bang in front of Snoopy Island. sandybeach.ae

Jubail Island

Sandwiched between two of Abu Dhabi’s most famous island idylls, Yas and Saadiyat, sits the humble and meek, but oh-so deep, Jubail Island. Out on a quiet outcrop of the still largely undeveloped isle, you’ll find Jubail Mangrove Park. It features a meandering 2.3km boardwalk that quite literally draws you right into nature. And there are plenty of ways to explore the capital’s serene green Everglades including boardwalk meditation sessions (Dhs120) ranger-led, guided tours (from Dhs50), kayaking (Dhs100), and e-dragon boat excursions (from Dhs80).

Jubail Island, 7am to 9pm. park.jubailisland.ae

Dubai Parks and Resorts

KITE BEACH, UMM AL QUWAIN

Originally a dedicated kitesurfing school, as is often the way with UAE beauty spots, Kite Beach Umm Al Quwain has capitalised on its good looks and easy charm, evolving into something so much more. The design aesthetic is a laidback blend of Bali and Tulum, decorated with mismatched sun loungers and made from solid wood sitting under traditional thatched beach umbrellas. Up-cycled doors placed in the sand offer a dream Instagram backdrop and families can rent a rustic double level beach hut for the day to enjoy the sand in style. For off-piste activities, you can hire a kayak, tour the mangroves or book in a team surf lesson and make the most of the waves. You need to pay for access, which starts from Dhs45 in the week and Dhs75 on weekends. Daily 6am to 10pm. kitebeachcenter.ae

The home of family adrenaline thrill rides in Dubai, this theme park hub currently holds three separate avenues of adventure within its walls. And that’s not including the whimsical central Riverland shopping and dining district that feels ripped straight from the pages of an old European fable. Legoland Dubai, Legoland Waterpark and Motiongate Dubai, each offer their own genre of attractions, with the two Lego-based parks tailoring to younger children, and Motiongate, with its moviethemed rollercoasters (Madagascar: Mad Pursuit is in the running for best UAE ride) taking care of everyone else. There’s currently a two-park combo pass (Dhs395) which gives families with a wide age range the option of not having someone sulking on the car ride home. On-site Lapita and Legoland hotels, also open up the option of an overnighter.

Legoland, Mon to Fri 10am to 6pm, Sat and Sun 10am to 7pm. Legoland Waterpark Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri 10am to 5pm, Sat and Sun 10am to 6pm, Weds closed. dubaiparksandresorts.com

Global Village

Scheduled to reopen on October 18, after its annual summer slumber, this Dubai-famous world fair was on the international pavilion tip way before ground had even broken on the Expo site. GV began enthralling visitors as a set of kiosks in 1997, and has since ballooned in size, adding all sorts of attractions and shows, rides and dining experiences, scares and thrills, markets and exhibits, hosting concerts and periodically setting off extravagant fireworks displays. But you know what hasn’t grown dramatically along with it? The admissions cost. Unlike Freddo bars – Global Village has resisted the temptations of inflation, and as of the end of last season – ticket prices were still just Dhs25. Dubai Garden Glow

Another alfresco favourite in Dubai’s cooler months, this pixelated utopia really leans into the eye-twitching visual aesthetic. The experience takes the form of an evening park stroll through a land of luminescent sculptures, comprised of more than 10 million energy-saving light bulbs. Looming litup polar bears and fluorescent floral fractals guide you along your journey towards the light. There’s also an adjacent animatronic dinosaur park, magic park and ice park. Combo tickets are available from Dhs70.

THE RIPE MARKET

The Ripe Market takes place at the Academy Park every year from October to May. Founded as a way of sourcing seasonal and local products, Ripe was originally very much a farmer’s style market. Now, it’s far beyond that, hosting stalls with a wide collection of artisanal knick knackery – from sustainable macrame teepees to organic bamboo bongos, and heavy metal graphic tees. The market takes place on Saturdays and Sundays, at an entrance fee of Dhs5. There’s a range of food truck eateries, workshops, a petting zoo, live entertainment, a children’s park, and more. Academy Park, Al Sufouh, 9am to 9pm Sat, 9am to 7pm Sun. ripeevents.com

Al Fahidi Historical District

Look, we’re fully aware that the idea of a full day of culture is a hard sell for kids. But it is possible if you stick to the ‘three S’ rule: split it up, sprinkle in some fun activities, and snacking. Bonus tip – this method also often works for cultureavoidant adults. Start your day off in Al Fahidi Historical District, exploring its traditional alleyways, galleries and museums. We recommend refreshments to be taken in the courtyard of the XVA Art Hotel, or legendary Arabian Tea House. Then head to neighbouring Al Seef, watch the building styles bleed from old to new, and make an enfant entertaining pit stop at the Museum of Illusion (from Dhs60). The interactive exhibits can be whizzed around fairly quickly but they’re designed to be fun and engaging for all ages, making it the perfect high-brow palate cleanser. After, smart sojourners take an abra trip over the Creek (Dhs2) to explore the souk district. With stalls and stores offering fragrant spices, shiny gold jewellery and assorted flashing, beeping trinkets – it’s a genuine safari of the senses. visitdubai.com

In addition to the definition-necessitated sand and proximity to the sea, you’ll find a bunch of cafés and food trucks; skate haven XPark (daypass Dhs75); the wonderland of nature exploration that is XPark Jr. (entry Dhs85); sports courts (including padel and volleyball); and the occasional kite.

REVIEW:

MOONRISE

When a generous portion of your job involves eating in nice restaurants, you can become a little inert to the power of good food. But every now and then, you experience something so exciting, unusual, and special, it reignites your passion for exploring gastronomy. That something, is Moonrise.

The spot became licensed earlier this year and, a month later, won its first Michelin Star. And now we’re back to see what new wonder Dubai-born chef Solemann Haddad is cooking up on the rooftop of Satwa’s Eden House.

The cosy dining room is dominated by a U-shaped bar where diners can watch the close-knit team of chefs work their magic.

The 11-course tasting menu, served twice nightly for Dhs850 per person (wine pairing at Dhs550), is a creative and clever representation of Dubai’s diverse culinary scene, or as self-taught chef Solemann tells us, it’s the food he grew up eating.

Things begin with a bang. The first course, ‘Explosion,’ feels very Dubai. Pani puri filled with foie gras ganache and date syrup on a bed of mango and saffron chutney, topped with truffle.

Ever thought you’d see a cheese toastie on a Michelin Star menu? No? Us neither. But Moonrise’s grilled cheese is special. It’s served on Japanese milk bread, its sweetness balanced with the salty umami of Parmigiano-Reggiano and black garlic emulsion. It’s a deliberate nostalgia grab, a skill chef Solemann has mastered.

All of the ingredients here have their own origin story, told in postcards provided alongside each course. We learn that the tomatoes are supplied from a farm in Al Ain. Their accountant’s mum in Syria makes the dried za’atar. Never underestimate a chef’s dedication to

finding the very best ingredients, wherever that may be.

The newest addition to the menu, the alfredo pasta, is a lobster ravioli served with a moreish cheese sauce made from parmesan rind. Moonrise’s ascension to the Michelin firmament has seen no dulling of their commitments on minimum waste, local produce, and sustainability. Then there’s the sarookh and scallop. A simple dish of the finest ingredients: a dollop of Kaluga caviar, a slightly-warmed Hokkaido scallop, elevated to otherworldly levels with a buttery, tangy sauce.

The dessert is inspired by the Dubai cafeteria culture classic, Abood Juice. The reinterpretation takes the form of an Alphonso mango cheesecake with honey and vanilla. It’s almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

Moonrise, Eden House, Al Satwa, Dubai. Mon to Sat, 6.30pm and 9.30pm. Tasting menu Dhs850 per person.

DIN TAI FUNG, BLUEWATERS DUBAI

A new stage to take a bao

It’s hard to imagine more humble origins to what is now a Taiwanese cuisine leviathan, but it all began as a part-cooking-oil-retailer-part-restaurant in the early 1970s. Din Tai Fung can now be found in over 170 locations worldwide. And passing by any of its branches here in Dubai, you’re likely to see packed dining halls, occasional queues and dumpling devotees devouring the brand’s iconic steamed bun, the xiaolongbao.

The latest outpost of the DTF empire, is a new licensed venue on Bluewaters Dubai for those who love their baos with a side of beer. On the night of our reservation, we made a beeline to The Wharf next to Ain Dubai and took the elevator to the first floor to find it bustling with diners gearing up to enjoy the start of their weekend.

Once seated, we were handed two menus, one for food and the other for drinks. We opted for their signature cocktails – Tai (Dhs75), a strong cocktail with sake, pink dragon fruit, a lemon slice

sprinkled with glitter; and Fung (Dhs75), a fruit drink with créme de violetteliqueur, blueberries, lemon and strawberry puree. This isn’t our first Din Tai Fung rodeo, and although we’re familiar with the food menu, there’s so much attractive fare, we spent an inordinate amount of time whittling down our order (made slightly easier by the mark sheet).

The first of our dishes, the six-piece chicken xiaolongbao (Dhs39), arrived in what we’re convinced is record time, which we gleefully dunked into the soy sauce, vinegar and shredded ginger mix made by our waitress, and given extra pep by the Schezwan sauce we ordered on the side. The next dish, chicken lettuce wraps (Dhs42), is laid on the table as we’re still chewing through the buns. Carefully picking up the crunchy lettuce, we invite a bite and make ‘mmm’ noises at the burst of juicy hot minced chicken and cool lettuce on our palate.

Din Tai Fung may be known for its dumplings, but the next dish, the wok-fried

lobster with almond brittle (Dhs235) was the dish of the night. Created especially for the Din Tai Fung Bluewaters branch, the lobster is perfectly-spiced, crispy and topped with a slightly sweet almond brittle to counteract the spicy notes. It is a triumph of form and flavour, one seafood fans cannot afford to leave without trying.

We made a mental note to try the noodles next time after being slightly underwhelmed by the palate potency of the black truffle egg fried rice (Dhs85). Though, if we have to leave you with one piece of advice, it would be to tuck into the dishes when they’re pipping hot to capitalise on the full delicious flavour.

For dessert, we were urged to try the chocolate xiaolongbao (Dhs34) featuring a mix of Nutella and Hershey. And it genuinely was a naughty rapture of gooey chocolate. A fitting end, to bao out on.

Din Tai Fung, The Wharf, Bluewaters Island, Dubai. Monday to Thursday 11am to 12am, Friday to Sunday, 11am to 2am. Tel: (0)4 288 7786. @dintaifungbw

A PERFECT PICK FOR RAK

At just an hour away from the centre of Dubai, Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island, sitting on a castaway isle of Ras Al Khaimah, is the perfect escape from the frantic pace of city living. And whilst the resort is packed with incredible amenities (such as the over-water adventure park) to help make any stay, absolutely world class – the range and depth of its culinary and nightlife offerings make it perfect for the fun-seeking day tripper too. These are just some of our favourite activities available right now.

BOONS BRUNCH

The indulgent Saturday brunch at Boons is back. From 1pm to 4pm the handsome brasserie and bar, serves up a full foodie feast fit for all the family with soft packages at just Dhs225 and a house option for Dhs325. The fun doesn’t have to end there. Teens aged 11-19 are given complimentary access to the resort’s Xscape Teen Zone with arcades, pinball and PlayStations and there’s also free entry to the stunning outdoor pool complex and beach, so you can truly make the most of the UAE’s best season.

ULA AFTERNOON HIGHT TEA: A TASTE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

Ula is also a strong contender, amongst stiff competition, for ‘fairest of them all’ on Al Marjan Island. This Dubai import with its own pool, swing-seat bar and easy-on-theeyes Mediterranean boho aesthetic makes for a memorable stage for day and night revelling in laidback luxury. And right now their afternoon tea deal, really should be on your to-do list. Available daily at Dhs175 per couple, you can take your sophisticated set piece alfresco, under the shade of parasols and gently swaying palms. Included in the high-tea spread, you’ll find savoury sandwiches, vanilla eclairs, lemon tarts, chocolate caramel cups, luxury teas, speciality coffees and so much more.

SKY BAR: WHERE NIGHTS COME ALIVE

When it comes to wow venues, Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island is unusually blessed, but if we had to pick one with that extra jaw-drop factor, it would be the rooftop, Neo Sky Bar. Open until late, it offers mesmeric views of the surrounding deep azure hues, comes with some stand-out craft mixology, a strong selection of shisha and some particularly delectable bar bites.

LOCAL LEGEND:

AL USTAD SPECIAL KABAB

Simplicity is this legendary location’s sugar, spice and everything nice

Al Ustad Special Kabab doesn’t scream for your attention. For starters, the entirety of the kebab combo offers at this Iranian haunt fit on one laminated sheet of paper. And there’s just enough space in the tiny restaurant for six tables, arranged a-la-Tetris, and a lone sink.

But that simplicity is part of its allure.

It is an uncontrived beauty, one that runs right through the anatomy of this local, family-run, business. A sort of rawness that you just won’t find in a fine-dining, fork-and-knife-ing type of location.

Al Ustad Special Kabab was the brainchild of Haji Mohammed Ali Ansari, an Iranian expat who came to Dubai, made it his home and gave it this hidden gem in 1978. Not much has changed

since, except those who helm it, and the global fame. Al Ustad is a legacy, a culinary heirloom passed down from one generation to the next, now safeguarded by Ali Ansari’s sons.

Décor here takes the form of scattered homely paintings, artefacts telling tales of the old country and framed cuttings charting the eatery’s rise to popularity. What catches your eye, are the innumerable pictures pinned to the walls, snaps of every famous face that has dined here, and there are quite a few of those. UAE royalty included.

I grab an out-of-the-way seat and watch the waiters rush past, carrying teetering plates of aromatic kebabs and steaming white rice laced with butter. It’s a Saturday

evening, which means business is brisk. We order a mixed platter for three. Deliberation complete - now we wait.

The kebabs arrive and are accompanied by a side of fries, huge, freshly baked tandoori naan and a serving of hummus. They’re an assorted mix, made with chicken, lamb and beef, and featuring varying flavours and marinades like lemon, sumac, cumin and a signature smokiness. Every meaty morsel is melt-inthe-mouth, perfectly grilled, good.

As is the nature of Iranian fare, there are no harsh surprises, no excess of spice or salt or anything. Everything is subtle, letting the true flavour of the produce shine through. The yoghurt kebabs offer the strongest kebabing, with a tartness punctuating the beef. Eaten with plain rice and salted butter, the mix is simple, but elevated.

That’s all you need to try at Al Ustad. That’s what it’s celebrated for. And it continues to do just that – nothing more, nothing less – every single day.

OKKU 2.0

Dubai’s original OKKU was well known for its authentic Japanese cuisine, after-dark ambiance and effortlessly chic interiors. It was an absence that had been keenly felt on the city’s dining circuit, but it was never going to be sayonara forever. And now it’s back, with a brand new location at Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah, a remastered menu, a showstopping 20-metre Sushi Bar & Robata Grill, centrepiece bar, and a renewed passion to deliver an incredible Japanese dining experience.

REFINED DINING

Food takes the starring role in the theatre of OKKU, with a menu crafted and curated by Japanese masters and internationally recognised chefs.

Expect a stunning blend of classic delicacies from the land of the rising sun, alongside dynamic interpretations, but always consistent with the brand’s commitment to use only premium ingredients. Dishes such as the decadent high-grade wagyu beef and foie gras kushiyaki; the dramatic ‘O’ Style ‘flaming’ avocado kazan, served with Japanese mushrooms and asparagus and the spicy, crunchy, fanpleasing rapture that is ‘O’ Style tuna on crispy rice. To ensure the highest standards, many of the kitchen’s prized products, including the beef and fish are flown in fresh daily from Japan.

REDEFINED MIXOLOGY

OKKU’s own brand of alchemy bleeds into the cocktail menu too, with

decorated mixologists preparing exotic speciality sips. The ‘O’ Style Saku Yuki, for example, is light and fruity, whilst the Sumo Punch packs a strong hook of flavour. For those that prefer to pair their plates with grape, the cellar holds more than 300 labels with enough depth and range to charm even the most selective of sommeliers.

REFRESHED SENSES

OKKU’s appeal to the senses is more than skin deep. The cleverly curated lighting set up, Yakisugi wood panels, brick walls, the brand’s original mesmerising jellyfish reimagined for the new space and signature OKKU scent (with aromatic notes of mandarin, bergamot, and orange blossom) combine to appeal to all your senses. OKKU is a seductive gallery, filled with Japanese-inspired creations, such as the thematic eight 3D-printed Samurai soldiers, that stand over two metres tall.

REVERED ENTERTAINMENT

OKKU too has retained its pedigree for delivering sophisticated entertainment, with resident DJs laying down atmospheric beats adding a touch of timeless chic to evening proceedings.

BAR OF THE MONTH: AGORA

Where mixology and culinary excellence come to life…

Positioned as a meeting place for like-minded people to gather, socialise and be merry, Agora, inside The Dubai Edition, may be one of my new favourite cocktail bars in the city.

I consider myself something of cocktail connoisseur, keep your tired old mixer and spirit and pour me a liquid gold concoction of the finest drops, juices and emulsions. Shaken or stirred, blended or trickled over ice, I will seldom say no to a cocktail – if I do, just assume that I have been cloned, and alert the proper authorities.

So with the news that a new bar celebrating craft mixology, Agora, had opened in Downtown Dubai –I and a fellow cocktail enthusiast beat a straight line directly to the venue. In terms of looks, it’s chic and sophisticated, a little old fashioned perhaps, but unmistakably cosmopolitan. It’s one of those spaces where the entrance threshold marks a jagged contrast to the world outside. Step through and you’re whisked away to prohibition era America, amid deep swirling greens and gilt-gold accents that highlight the grandeur of the experience.

You’re greeted by a stunning bar that is surrounded by low lying seating, and

a terrace that has quite possibly the coolest roof in the locale (and there’s lofty competition), where pampas hangs from the ceiling. The dimly lit room adds to the ambience and funky lounge music lulls in the background when the chatter of the evening picks up.

The elegance extends to the menu, too. You’re invited to choose from an extensive list curated by the great head mixologist Simone Caporale, and you truly get the sense that love, passion and dedication are poured into these drinks with every sip.

Agora’s cocktails are more than just a

stunning sight to behold, they are also fabulously delicious. Try their signature Bubble (Dhs85), in passion fruit flavour, for a fruity and refreshing serve that passes the taste test with flying colours. Alongside the drinks, the bar bites at Agora are unmissable too. My top pick would be the Manchego and beef chorizo croquettes – some of the richest and most decedent pockets of joy I’ve tasted this year. And hot tip: be selfish, establish a no-sharing contract with your mate or date, because these dainty bites are too good to ‘go twos’ on.

Agora, The Edition Downtown Dubai, open daily from 6pm to 3am. Tel: (0)58 592 5823. @agora_dxb

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH: LUCIA’S

When life gives you lemons

In a sea of Italian restaurants in Dubai, Lucia’s is instantly recognisable. An ode to the lemon-filled island of Capri, this bright and instantly mood-boosting hue truly dictates the décor. Behind a yellow desk, a duo of friendly hostesses provide a warm sunny welcome, and we’re swiftly escorted inside for the Caprese Brunch. The music is turned on as soon as we’re seated, a setlist of poppy tunes that aren’t particularly Italian, but put us in the mood for a lively afternoon.

In the cooler months, a table on the terrace –backed by Burj Khalifa views and in the surrounds of the lush garden and trickling water features –would be our seat of choice. But inside is just as pretty, with faux citrus groves climbing the canary yellow blinds, opened so the floor-to-ceiling windows can flood the restaurant with natural light. The indoor space has been designed for big groups,

with large round tables surrounded by smart latticed blue and white chairs. The maximalist décor ensures that everywhere you look oozes that southern Italian feel, from the lemon-printed plates to the long bar that’s lined with a distinct citron and sky blue tile. This is surely one of the most Instagrammable restaurants in the city. We’re presented with a menu, and the setup is explained to us. The only choice we need to make this afternoon, is which main course we opt for from a six-option selection that includes a risotto, lasagna, or a choice of sea bream, tiger prawns or baby chicken. We opt for the seafood risotto and the gamberoni.

With decisions out of the way, starters begin with stillwarm, deliciously spongy focaccia. Everything that follows goes down well. A trio of tuna, red snapper and sea bass crudo served on ice with bottles of citrus and truffle dressing prove to be a table-wide hit, while the insalata di arance e finocchi, with lashings of vinaigrette dressing over green apple, beans and blood orange is fresh and flavourful. The fritto calamari, lightly fried calamari and zucchini, is served with a pair

of sauces – a spicy tomato and lemon mayo – and is another crowd pleaser, the mix of crunch and spice adding both flavour and texture. The only one that slightly misses the mark is the insalata di mare, with the poached seafood a little tasteless compared to the flavour-packed dishes it’s served alongside. Special mention should also go to the swift service that ensures drinks during our afternoon seating are never less than half full.

As mains arrive, so do a string of lemonprinted tambourines, which staff hand out to guests to jam along as a DJ plays. We get involved with gusto, although the whole performance is brought to an abrupt end after a couple of songs.

The mains are excellent, a generous plate of tiger prawns with cherry tomatoes and a fragrant bisque is a standout option that’s far beyond traditional brunch dishes. To conclude, a dessert platter with typical crowd-pleasers: a sweet lemon tart, crunchy millefoglie and Sicilian cannoli are almost too pretty to eat.

Lucia’s, Address Sky View, Downtown Dubai, Sat, 1.30pm to 5pm, Dhs385 soft, Dhs445 house.

REVIEW: DUO GASTROBAR

Is this the most affordable fine-dining restaurant in Dubai?

Arelative newcomer, but already a significant contributor to the city’s food scene, Dubai Hills Business Park is on our radar thanks to the recent influx of exciting (mostly licensed) restaurant openings. One of which, Duo Gastrobar, hails all the way from St. Petersburg and has a rather impressive CV, recognised by the likes of 50 Best Discovery.

Chef-owned (always a good start), the founders Dmitry Blinov and Renat Malikov are bringing their 40 best dishes, as well as reasonable prices, quality ingredients, and a lively atmosphere, to the first Middle Eastern outpost in Dubai Hills.

After a few word-of-mouth recommendations and, with the fear of missing out, we decided to go down and check it out. Could this be the knockout, reasonably priced neighbourhood restaurant we’ve been missing?

On a hot Friday evening, this boxfresh restaurant is bustling with a mix of families, couples, and larger groups. The dining room occupies a sophisticated, intimate space with neutral tones and wooden tables, leading our eyes to the slick open kitchen and focused team of chefs.

Modern European cuisine with a subtle sideline of Asian influence (and therefore voguishly Dubai), the one-page menu is separated into starters, pastas, mains, desserts, and signature dishes. Most, if not all, the dishes call out to us.

To kick the night into motion, start with the Hugo cocktail (Dhs50), a simple and refreshing combination of prosecco, elderflower liqueur, and lemon juice.

Order the broccoli pate (Dhs35) and yellowtail with black truffle and horseradish (Dhs85) to start. Two nobrainers and we can see why they’re Duo signature dishes. Four glistening pieces of raw yellowtail are served in a bed of umami-rich black truffle soy sauce and sprinkled with horseradish, lending a fiery kick.

Don’t skip the young cabbage with truffle (Dhs75). Rich, tender cabbage topped with shavings of fresh black truffle, crunchy salt, and cheese sauce warms our soul and feels, though hard to pinpoint in origin, faintly nostalgic.

Chef Dmitriy ensures the kitchen operates on zero-waste,

with all his restaurants built around the idea of conscious consumption. In fact, you’ll notice a lot of the dishes are based around one vegetable, with every part carefully used so nothing goes to waste.

The oxtail pie (Dhs75) is certainly worth seeking out, in all its flaky, buttery, creamy glory. Nodding between mouthfuls at the balance of flavours between the tender oxtail and Taleggio cheese, this comforting dish definitely steals the show.

Although we’re enormously full, the coconut cream with raspberry (Dhs45) is calling our name, and we are glad it did. A light sponge, fresh and dehydrated raspberries, pistachios, and coconut cream provide the perfect end to an excellent meal.

Whether you live in Dubai Hills or have to travel to get there, trust us when we say, Duo is worth the journey.

THE SPICE IS RIGHT:

Excellence

Price: Dhs3.50

There are dozens of entry-level hot sauces on the market, but few hammer the flavour notes quite as succinctly as Excellence’s range of tongue-tinglers. Instantly identifiable by the (surely, spice-addled) eagle on the packaging, this sauce is a cupboard essential for spicy salsa sommeliers. There are habanero, garlic and jalapeno variations, but as purists, we feel the OG version is the brand’s magnum opus. Pairing suggestion: shake it all over your fries, and don’t stop till you reach the last drop.

@excellencehotsauce

Curious Elephant

Price: Dhs50

A collection of craft Asian sauces, that includes such smouldering hotties as Vietnamese Chilli Sauce, Chinese Chilli Oil and Malaysian Chilli Sambal, all of which were tried, tested and received full commendations from the What’s On condiment quality assurance board. The heat quotient is placed a rung or two below profundity-of-flavour on the Curious Elephant priority ladder, and that makes it the perfect salve for giving your hob top sauces an extradimensional bang. Pairing suggestion: as comfortable on your grilled prawns as it is on your salad.

Mama J’s Hot Pepper Sauce

Price: Dhs6.30

Found at the business end of Abu Dhabi, West to West Kitchen’s core mission is all about the party on your palate. They serve up an authentic mix of West African and West Indian (Caribbean) food (hence the name) but, there’s also a secret side quest that is well worth exploring. Mama J’s Hot Pepper Sauce is a volcanic flow of flavour burning a neat little hole into the condiments section of the menu. Conceived by W2W matriarchs Mama J and Aunty Lina, the sauce capitalises on Caribbean culinary staple, the scotch bonnet pepper, a hot but deeply flavourful chilli variety. There’s heat, there’s sweet, and there’s a whole lot of tang, up in this thang.

TabChilli

Price: Dhs135

There’s a regal air around this fermented chilli paste. So much so, we can almost feel it judging us on what food vector choices we make for it. “Oh” it seems to say “smashed avo toast again is it?” Peasantries aside, the rich fermented embers of the sauce rumble across the palate with broad umami swagger. Themes of salt, sour and warmth maintain throughout. This is posh hot sauce, but it’s got a delicious streak of feral in it too.

Pairing suggestion: elevate your guac.

@tabchilli

DK Hot Sauce

Price: Dhs22

Discerning mouth-burning devotees relish in telling you that even the blandest meal can be vastly improved with the simple application of a few dollops of fire and spice. And the Caribbean-inspired hot ones from the DK range are real mealtime revolutionaries. Available via Kibsons, your little blue box will allow you to choose such fighters as the classic, non-generationally-discriminatory, Hot Pepper Boomer; the razor-edged Citrus Banger; the weapon’s grade, Double Bubble; ketchupy vibed Sweet Heat; and the totally tropical –Pineapple Pow. Pairing suggestion: get it on some freshly barbecued chicken drumsticks. Or air-fried if you simply must.

@dkhotsauce

Camp’s Kitchen

Price: Dhs40

This fragrantly-scented, beautifullypresented, brand of six fermented hot sauces really runs the full heat level gamut. At one end you’ve got the mild, meek, rural and sleek – Smoke & Earth and at the other, you have the Black Reaper. As in the Grim Reaper – the literal embodiment of death – it’s made using one of the hottest chillis on earth, the Carolina Reaper (along with black cherry), and yet somehow manages eloquence and poise. Heatseekers can also get involved with a reaper-sriracha crossover. We’re huge supporters of their commitment to ensuring their batches are low-sugar, low-sodium and low-carb. Pairing suggestion: slap the Reap’racha over some prawn gyoza.

DELICIOUSLY REVOLTING!

Matilda The Musical by The Royal Shakespeare Company stomps and skips its way into Dubai Opera this month

The joys of Roald Dahl’s work have survived several generations of children, and numerous adaptations – both good and bad. His wickedly delightful books – from The Witches and The BFG, to Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and James & The Giant Peach – tend to champion misfits and disparage bullies. In other words, they often make kids feel better about being different – a universally acknowledged part of growing up.

That’s at the heart of one of Dahl’s most beloved children’s stories, the 1988 novel Matilda, a story about a little girl,

unloved by her parents. She joins a school run by the wicked Miss Trunchbull, a headmistress that thrives on abusing all the schoolchildren. But Matilda is a genius with magical telekinetic powers, which she uses (with the guidance of her kind form teacher Miss Honey) to lead her classmates to liberation and to help them stand up to their bullies. It’s a wonderful story that’s inspired generations of fans, teaching important life lessons about how to find your voice and use it, and that chosen family is just as valid as your birth one.

It’s no wonder then that in 2003 – seven years after the release of Danny DeVito’s fabulous film adaptation starring Mara Wilson – the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) began work on the idea of a musical based on the book, bringing on playwright Dennis Kelly, Matthew

Warchus as director (Warchus incidentally also directed the December 2022 Netflix film version), and the radical Australian comedian, and composer Tim Minchin to write a delectably clever score.

Matilda The Musical premiered at the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratfordupon-Avon in November 2010 to great

critical acclaim, immediately playing to sold-out audiences. It then transferred to London’s West End receiving more rave reviews, a slew of awards, including Best Performance in a Musical at the Theatre Awards UK 2011 and Best New Musical at the Whatsonstage.com awards. In Spring 2013, the production opened on Broadway, where it played for four years, going on to win four Tony awards, before it began touring the world.

In total, Matilda The Musical has travelled to 91 cities and won over 100 international awards. More importantly, it’s won the love of its audiences, be they adults or children. So far, over 11 million people have seen the show worldwide. More than a decade on, the production continues to delight audiences of all ages. Don’t be naughty – get your tickets now…

MINCHIN’S MAGICAL MAGIC MUSIC

Our favourite songs from the stage soundtrack by the legendary Tim Minchin

REVOLTING CHILDREN

With clever lyrics that interchange the two meanings of revolting, and a fantastic ensemble singalong about the power of the collective, Revolting Children is a great reclamation of control by the students of Crunchem Hall.

SCHOOL SONG

Wordplay at its best, School Song is delivered through the repetition of the alphabet –and serves as a warning to Matilda that Crunchem Hall is a terrible school. The ingenuity of the lyrics makes it one of the best songs.

QUIET

Minchin is quoted for saying that Quiet is his favourite song from the musical, which has become as much a springboard for neurodiversity awareness as an emotional musical anthem.

MIRACLE

The opening song for the musical celebrates the miracle of life, while simultaneously highlighting Matilda’s parents’ disdain for her ever being born. It’s fun and dark in equal measure.

MY HOUSE

Softer than Minchin’s other songs, My House is a beautiful yet heartbreaking song sung by the caring Miss Honey, who manages to find the light in the dark no matter her circumstances.

Pick n Icks

Alice

PICK: tailored two-pieces

My great-grandmother used to say that a little tailored suit will take you anywhere. Roughly 100 years later, I still agree. Of course, fashion has moved on since then, and a tailored two-piece might be a matching shirt and shorts, skirt and jacket, or trouser and blouse. But smartly tailored matching sets will never go out of style.

ICK: Barbiecore

It’s ironic that I sit here wearing a bubblegum pink blouse, but Barbiecore – especially in the fashion world – has finally given me the ick. That’s not to say you can’t wear pink: it’s flattering, versatile and feminine. But enough is enough now.

Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter

PICK: Accessories

I am not into fashion, but I do love accessories. A classic watch can really do wonders for otherwise simple attire. The same can be said for a belt, or a really dainty necklace. It doesn’t need to come with a big price tag either, which is what I love.

ICK: Ripped jeans

Call me old fashioned, but I really don’t get the point of ripped jeans. A little at the knee, alright, but the extreme cuts really baffle me. You spend so much money for so little cloth and you end up showing off more than what others care to see. Big ick.

Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter

PICK: Cargos

Not just for the many (real) pockets that women never seem to have in any other trousers. But a good pair of cargos topped off with baggy or even a tiny tee and dunks (also firmly a sneakerhead), is always an easy go-to outfit for me.

ICK: Ill-fitting suits

I can get behind an oversized suit but what I cannot stand is suit trousers that are too short, or suit jackets and shirts that are pulling at the seams. Suits are meant to be the epitome of class and looking suave –having your ankles showing and your shirt nearly tearing is not that.

Miles

PICK: Printed tees

Is vacation-dadcore a thing?

Not in a ‘blocked site’ kind of way. I just feel it’s a description that captures my own sartorial swagger. Printed tees or Hawaiian short sleeves, matched with some gnarley kicks and one firm, never relenting, grip on the 90s.

ICK: Sliders and socks

What, I’m old OK? And I have a track record of looking at new fashion trends as a major ick before slowly and like the big hypocrite I am, circuitously adding them to my wardrobe. Skinny jeans have entered the chat. But I don’t think the socks x open footwear collab will ever make the jump. It’ll most likely slip over in the run-up to it.

Tamara Wright, Online Reporter

PICK: Matching sets

Pyjamas included. Being comfortable is everything and looking chic while doing it is a bonus, which seems to come easy with a matching silk or linen set.

ICK: Odd socks

It’s not quirky, it’s not fun, it’s just lazy. Also when you can see the ankle socks under trainers, these things hurt my ‘sole’.

Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor

PICK: Sideburns

If you watch retro cinema, you’ll notice the male actors often sported a cultivated fur strip alongside their ears. Elvis and Travolta looked cool, but it’s Jackman as Wolverine’s massive mutton chops that win top props from me. Give it a shot, and remember, if they’re laughing, they likely can’t grow their own.

ICK: Baggy, ill-fitting bottoms

It’s sweet you love your city so much you want to clean it when you head out. But unless you plan to feature in a hip-hop video, baggy, low-waist jeans/pants sadly look off on most people. And if they touch the floor, it’s time to switch things up. Stay fit, stay fitted.

Manaal Fatimah, Junior Online Reporter

PICK: Ear stacking

Have space, will get piercings. The stacking that’s currently all the rage is right up my alley. What is life, if not for accessorising?

ICK: Open-toed shoes

You will never catch me in the wild wearing footwear that doesn’t cover up those bad boys. Yes, I’m being dramatic and yes, I’m fully aware.

Beirut BEYOND

Lebanon’s capital may be king when it comes to gourmet dining and nightlife. But there’s much more to the country than its biggest city. Here’s our case for going beyond Beirut

Lebanon’s tourism industry has suffered more than most in recent years, with the pandemic, economic instability and the heartbreaking Beirut explosion in 2020 all impacting visitor numbers. But this summer, glimmers of hope and optimism are beginning to shine through. Beirut’s creative scene is slowly returning to its feet, as are its restaurants and bars. But beyond Beirut, Lebanon’s breathtaking mountains, picturesque villages and postcard-perfect seaside towns offer an appeal that’s often overlooked. Here’s why they need to be high on your Lebanon travel itinerary.

Byblos

The beauty of Byblos stretches from its sun-drenched seafront to the historic ancient ruins that give a glimpse into the former life of one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited towns. Located just under an hour north of Beirut, this UNESCO-listed town is packed with old world charm. Its history is a huge part of its present, so start with a stroll around the well-maintained archeological sites, such as the 12th Century Byblos Castle, which is surrounded by ruins from the Phoenician and Roman eras. The beautiful harbour is another stunning spot to soak up a breezy Mediterranean feel, and the port is dotted with pretty sundowner spots like Le Blanc Bleu (@leblancbleu.lb) and Kina (@kina_handcraftedbar).

Baalbek

Away from the coast in northeast Lebanon, Baalbek’s defining feature is undoubtedly the Baalbek Temple. The largest Roman temple to have ever been built, the impressive ruins still feature shadows of six of the original columns of the Temple of Jupiter, thought to have been built between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Remains of the Temple of Mercury and the Temple of Bacchus from the same era are also present at the same UNESCO World Heritage Site. To make the most of your visit, book a guided tour with a local company like Zingy Ride Tours (@zingyride) who offer four-hour guided tours plus hotel pickup and drop off from Dhs450.

64 OCTOBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE TRAVEL // LEBANON

Chouf Chouf

Leafy green Chouf is particularly picturesque in autumn, and if you’re craving fresh air and verdant nature, Chouf is where to head. The Chouf Biosphere Reserve is Lebanon’s largest reserve, filled with lush Cedar forests that invite hikers, bird watchers and mountain climbers to enjoy the locale. Baakline is another beautiful spot in Chouf to visit if natural beauty is high on your travel bucket list, with its leafy trees surrounding sparkling blue waterfalls and lakes. Many of these are peppered with rustic restaurants, like Shallalat Al Zarka (@shallalat_al_zarka), a gorgeous Lebanese restaurant perched on the edge of the Baakline river, which even has a special ‘love boat’ table for guests to dine on a romantic table for two on the water.

Batroun

Faraya

Best known for being the home of Lebanon’s popular Mzaar Kfardebian ski resort, visitors flock to this mountain resort from late December until February for wintersports when a fresh layer of snow blankets the craggy mountain peaks. But the epic scenery at 1,650 metres above sea level can be enjoyed year-round. Hiking is still a popular pursuit for visitors in the autumn, with waterfalls and statues to admire along the way. For cocktails with a view, Sapa Faraya (@sapabeirut) is a Peruvian restaurant and bar set within a grand castle on the cliff. An iconic spot for sundowners that turn into epic DJ sets that go until the early hours, be sure to party hard at Odin (@odin_mzaar).

Broumana

A town treasured by locals and tourists alike, Batroun has the old world charms of Byblos, but feels a little livelier. It’s the kind of seaside town that rewards getting lost in its quaint streets that seem plucked from a postcard. It’s just 16km further up the coast from Byblos, so similar remnants of the area’s Phoenician roots remain. You’ll find plenty of beach bars perched prettily on the waterfront, but don’t miss the trip in-land to visit the many wineries dotted throughout mountains. The vineyards are known for producing grapes that are vibrant in colour and flavour. The family-run Batroun Mountains Winery (@batrounmountainswinery) welcomes visitors for tours and tastings, as does Aurora Winery and Vineyards (@aurorawinery).

While it might be just 15 minutes outside of Beirut, Broumana feels like worlds away from the bustle of the city. This lovely town is as charming as it is beautiful, and overlooks the capital from its hillside perch. Known as the ‘City of Flowers,’ thanks to the colourful arrays that adorn the traditional houses, there are plenty of scenic walks and lots of leafy green cafés and bars to relax at while drinking in the views. Try On The Rocks (@on_the_rocks_lb) for chilled vibes and Lebanese fare, or the collection of restaurants at Domaine De Mar Chaaya (@domainedemarchaaya). You can even go glamping at Pineville (@pinevillelebanon) where you can cosy up in your own private cabin, with on-site facilities including a sauna and jacuzzi.

A

OF MANY COLOURS...

Uncovering the saphire charms of France’s Côte d’Azur

WHATSON.AE | OCTOBER 2023 67

Ispent most of my early twenties flipflopping around the coastal towns of mainland France. I learned the language, fell in love with its sultry, mopey, poetic soul, and ate such a gluttonous quantity of cheese that I’m still trying to shed the surplus fromage kilos two decades on. But during that time, and in all the years hence, there’s an area I’d left scandalously unexplored... the Côte d’Azur. That south-eastern extremity of the tricolore nation, cosied up to Alpine foothills, calm Mediterranean waters, and towns of such galvanised glamour and timeless elan – they’ve been beset with the jet set and Hollywood’s glitterati for the best part of a century. So this summer I returned with family in tow, a rusty French vocabulary, an imaginary choir of accordions firing up the first few bars of Champs-Élysées, and an unquenchable thirst for tapenade.

BEFORE YOU GO

In the trip-planning phase, you’ll need to choose a base of operation. Will it be Nice? If you’re flying in, or taking the train you’ll likely emerge here, and although Nice is perfectly *don’t say it, don’t say it* agreeable, we’d recommend skipping ahead slightly further onto Cannes. There’s a bus (around Dhs80) that takes you straight from Nice airport into the couer de Cannes, which has better coastal train links, a more densely packed bistro community, far more pleasant beaches and the world’s most standing ovationy film festival.

This locale also provides a canny springboard for reaching such day-tripping destinations as SaintTropez and its glitzy beach clubs; jazz bar-sprinkled Antibes with its walled fort; medieval Menton’s musées and Basilique; and of course F1-track-sporting, casino royale-ing Monaco.

Where to stay

There’s a French saying that goes “chacun voit midi à sa porte.” The literal translation is ‘everybody sees midday at their own door’. We all see the world differently, we have our own priorities, and according to what yours are, we have two different French Riviera door options for you...

Citadines Apart’hotel Croisette Cannes

Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic

Adorned in art deco grandeur and flaunty Français finery, this well-located luxury bolt hole is all about the Instaglam – it sits right on the seafront, has a Le Fouquet’s restaurant and Champagne bar, a spa, retro cinema, a La Plage beach club and the walls are festooned with monochrome portraits from the golden age of motion pictures. Prices for a night stay start at around Dhs900 off-peak. @hotelbarrierelemajestic

If you’re looking for a door that’s more affordable and just “somewhere to lay your head” this Citadines site makes a sensible call. The staff are friendly, it’s supermarché adjacent and just a short walk into the heaving hub of Cannes. Prices start at around Dhs330 per night, which makes it perfect for the budgetconscious traveller.

WHERE TO PLAY

This stretch of the French coastline was one of the original incubators for the ‘More Beach Clubs’ movement. Something we know all about in the UAE, so if you like your vacations with a bit of familiar flavour, the Riviera provides in abundance. St. Tropez’s Nikki Beach (@nikkibeachsainttropez) should be on your radar for its impeccable global consistency on white-walled luxury. It’s worth noting though that whilst the restaurant is happy to seat families, the beat-bathed beach club is adults only. Just down the road, you’ll find Gigi Ramatuelle (@gigi_restaurant) – a version of which is headed to La Mer redevelopment, J1 Beach. And Gigi is more than happy to host the kiddies. They have a dedicated ‘Circus’ play area (accepting unaccompanied minors five years and up), meaning parents can soak up the pine-shaded boho-inspired pool and restaurant vibes in uninterrupted peace.

As charming as parasols and papillotes are, those choosing to navigate deeper into the grains of the Côte d’Azur can find more exotic treasures. If you’ve got a taste for exploration, you can catch the ferry to Île Sainte-Marguerite (for less than Dhs80), a former island prison (and the incarceration place of the Man in the Iron Mask) that’s scrubbed up pretty nicely since its sentence ended. Just over an hour’s train ride away from Cannes, is the handsome Monte-Carlo found in the wafer-slither principality of Monaco. Check out the famous Casino, walk the winding red and white lines of the F1 track, and visit the harbour, Prince’s Palace or the exhibitions that take place in the province’s many galleries.

Where to dine

We’re not foolish enough to wade into the ‘which country has the best food’ debate here. There are too many kitchen knives in close proximity to stakeholders for that to ever feel like a good idea. But we will say that France, mother of sauces, queen of cheese, perfector of patisserie and dean of doing duck confit, has to be in the final, non? And as you’d expect from such a proud culinary enclave, the range of local and international dining experiences is *chef’s kiss* tres bien. Part of the joy in exploring the various Côte d’ Azure quartiers is seeking out hidden gem bistros (which is made easier, though significantly less of a sport, by doing some research in advance). The usual rules apply, the closer to the seafront, the more pricy your Steak frites and rarely is that ever indicative of a hike in quality. Instead, explore the chequered table cloths up shaded side streets. Here you’ll find more fire in the kitchen, attractive menu du jours and staff that are less frazzled by the chaotic whims of us tourists. The top pick from our trip was Cannes’ Bistrot de Grand Mère, which serves up no-fuss Provencal specialities with as close to warm hospitality as you’re likely to find in France. Abu Dhabi-born Saddle has recently opened a café here if you want to support local. But for a big Gallic blowout, it has to be La Vague d’Or (@lavaguedor). A Three Michelin Star masterpiece run by chef Arnaud Donckele, you can enjoy the pan-Mediterranean set-menu for Dhs1,210.

GETTING THERE

Emirates flies from Dubai to Nice daily, with round-trip fares from around Dhs3,515.

From the seafront, guests can see the stylish Bulgari Resort a short distance away, while the Four Seasons Resort is just beyond that. The property offers the best of both worlds when it comes to a beach or city stay. You get the postcardworthy vistas of the Downtown skyline, and a stretch of Arabian Gulf-lapped gold sand.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The hotel is undeniably glamorous, but without being gaudy. It begins in the lobby, where Canopy of Light, one of the many dazzling design touches by interior designer Jeffrey Wilkes, sees 14 bronze metal trees guide guests down from the door, through the contemporary lobby to the refined Noor Lounge. That subtle yet striking aesthetic continues through the whole hotel: contemporary colours, expensive woods, big windows lighting true, modern luxury.

THE ROOMS

Our one bedroom suite is a lesson in luxe. Guests enter into a long living area, complete with dining table, seating area, and a balcony that presides over the perfectly manicured pool area. To the left,

a walk-in wardrobe leads through to the shimmering bathroom, marble and gold accents making even the most functional space feel fabulous. In the bedroom, the same refined luxury reigns supreme in a space that’s instantly relaxing.

THE FOOD AND DRINK

Where many Dubai hotels favour ‘the more the merrier’ approach to the number of restaurants, Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai focuses its energy onto two signature restaurants. At Tasca, housed on the hotel rooftop, the flavours of Portugal masterminded by chef Jose Avillez are in the spotlight. The cosy restaurant is uplifted by an impossibly turquoise infinity pool, and a menu that gives authentic Portuguese cuisine a Dubai edge.

The other standout culinary experience is Japanese steakhouse Netsu. We dine here for Saturday brunch, allowing us to enjoy the best bits of chef Ross Shonhan’s culinary creations, many of which come with a signature smoky aroma thanks to the unique Warayaki grill. Pair rounds of beef gyozas and tuna tataki with a Japanese margarita and melon cosmopolitan. For

THE FACILITIES

The hotel’s dual beach and city offering ensures all travellers are catered to, whether travelling for business or leisure, keeping active or blissing out. The inviting splitlevel swimming pool, enveloped by lush gardens, is flanked by relaxing loungers and cabanas, where guests retreat to soak up the sun. There’s more relaxing to be had down on the beach, where loungers dotted along the sand offer direct access to the sea. A fitness centre and pampering spa complete the leisure line-up. But the hotel’s close location to the city ensures those chasing adventure are only 10 minutes from all the action.

ROOM RATES

A one-night stay for two in a superior room starts from Dhs2,100 for the room only, or Dhs2,350 inclusive of breakfast.

VERDICT

Where this hotel sets itself apart from the competition is the service, which from start to finish is standout. Whether it’s the breakfast team at The Bay whipping up a special smoothie, or the housekeeping assistants switching the pillows in accordance with how you left things the day before, the team know that they’re an extension of the brand, and they take that incredibly seriously.
