EDITOR’S PICKS

Summer, that is. It somehow feels like if we don’t mention it, its impending arrival just won’t happen. But you’ve probably seen the signs: that evening walk a little stickier than last week, the car temperature dial already in the 30s the second you turn on the ignition in the morning. Summer. Is. Coming.

Although we will soon be saying goodbye to alfresco sunset evenings and blissful beach days, it’s not all bad news. With the summer season comes a slew of deals that allows you to enjoy the city without breaking the bank. And that’s exactly what you’ll find in this issue. Consider this issue our case for spending the summer in the city. Looking for a wallet-friendly brunch? From Jamaican delights by the sea for Dhs225 to a two-for-one on a buffet brunch bonanza, we’ve got you covered. Fancy a fun day out? From making a splash at a redeemable pool day to exclusive deals on attractions we’ve secured just for you, there’s 22 brilliant deals to plan the next few months around from p15.

But it’s not just us at What’s On making sure this summer is one to remember in Abu Dhabi. Whether you’re rocking out at Guns N’ Roses on p24, or belly laughing your way through Jason Manford’s upcoming comedy gig in the capital (read all about it on p44), Abu Dhabi’s events scene continues to deliver the goods.

And if you’re still looking to pack out your schedule with even more fun stuff, head to p54, where the antidote to the summer sweat is an array of after-dark activities we think you’ll love.

Enjoy the issue,

Americano seems to be one of those restaurants that is quintessential to the Madinat experience. I recently visited the venue with one of my friends and her parents for an overdue catch up. While there weren’t countless dishes to choose from, the ones that were there stood out. The burrata bruschetta and seabass were especially delicious.

@americanodubai

I recently ventured to the shores of Umm Al Quwain to experience the hidden gem that is Olliedaze. The famed beach party event had us basking in the sun and the tropical island waters, before migrating into a boogie with the setting sun. Ollidaze is truly my happy place, and if you’re looking for your next ultimate beach day getaway then this is the spot.

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Through MY EYES Samantha Wood

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, their favourite places, hidden gems, must-try dishes, local brands they love. This month, we chat to Samantha Wood (@foodiva), founder of impartial restaurant review website FooDiva.net and curator of dining experiences. After living in Dubai for 24 years, she shares her tips to making the most of UAE life.

Six Senses Zighy Bay is my favourite UAE staycation spot. Strictly speaking it’s in Oman, however, given the two hour drive from Dubai, in my book, this resort qualifies as local. Having returned so many times since my first visit back in 2011, I’ve lost count. A combination of pool villas, outdoor showers, endless beach for long strolls, five-star butler service and utter serenity makes this resort extra special.

My recent discovery is Josette, a French restaurant in DIFC with a Parisian-style, roaring 20s theme, complete with the most mesmerising singers and dancers, tap dancing included all the way from France. I love the press for Champagne button that actually works by lighting up the table number at the bar. This is classic French brasserie-style fare with the odd twist.

A traditional Chinese massage at Yin Yang Connection Spa is my favourite hidden gem. I frequent the JBR branch for a no-frills, deep tissue treatment by Bonnie that alleviates muscular aches. If I am feeling lazy, then I’ll book an at-home massage with Kaina Home or Solace Home Spa.

One restaurant that is close to my Greek-Cypriot heart is Mythos – the OG in JLT. Delicious mezze morsels aside and a wallet-friendly Greek wine list, plus the warmth of the service, sets this restaurant apart.

To switch off I love a pool day, preferably an adults-only pool with low volume music. I love La Baie’s pool at the RitzCarlton on JBR Walk where, swimming aside, I spend the day reading. A piña colada at the swim-up bar is mandatory. I’ll end the day with a sundowner at the hotel’s beach-fronted Latino restaurant Tamoka – paired with a choripan (Argentinian chorizo hot dog).

With over 100 million records sold, Guns N’ Roses has reigned as the kings of rock for the best part of three decades. As the legends return to the UAE on June 1, What’s On tracks their incredible –yet turbulent – career

WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN

24 MAY 2023 | WHATSON.AE
Axl Rose Slash

There aren’t many bands out there that are bigger than rock royalty, Guns N’ Roses. The band came storming onto the music scene in the mid-’80s, and became known as ‘the most dangerous band in the world.’ Their reckless behaviour, no-cares-given attitude and incredibly brash performances put them up against some of Los Angeles’ heaviest hitters on the Sunset Strip, but something made them stand out.

Their music reached a much wider audience than their predecessors – the blues-loving adults who worshipped Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, and the Rolling Stones; the angsty kids who wanted someone to relate to; the metalheads and even some of the punks.

It took the young group a few years to find success, but once they did, they exploded. They went from playing the Troubadour in

LA to headlining stadiums within just a few short years, giving straight-up rock-n-roll a Renaissance in the era of big-hair bands. Their 1987 album Appetite for Destruction was the best-selling US debut ever, moving 30 million copies globally. But that didn’t come without its downsides. Egos and addiction started to consume the band from the inside out, and they eventually started to fall apart.

The world didn’t see Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan all on the same stage together from 1993 to 2016, during which was a bit of a jumbled-up mess in between for all of the members. Thankfully, time tends to heal all wounds, and in 2016, the reunion of the century took place when the band reformed as the surprise headline act at Coachella. Soon after, they sold five million tickets on their Not in This Lifetime Tour, and now they’re back on a world tour for 2023 with a key stop in Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena on June 1. Don’t miss it.

THE UPS AND DOWNS

1991

The song Sweet Child O’ Mine became the band’s first and only number one hit, and it remains one of the most recognisable rock songs of all time.

The music video for Welcome to the Jungle is one of the most iconic videos of the 1980s and helped to launch the band’s career.

1988

The release of the double album Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II in 1991 marked a creative high point for the band. The albums featured some of their most iconic songs like November Rain and Don’t Cry

1987

1987

The band’s debut album, Appetite for Destruction, is one of the best-selling albums of all time, with over 30 million copies sold worldwide.

1985

Guns N’ Roses is formed in Los Angeles by vocalist Axl Rose, guitarists Slash and Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler.

1990s 1990s

The band saw several key members leave during the 1990s, including Slash (1995), Izzy Stradlin (1994), and drummer Steven Adler (1994). This led to a decline in the band’s popularity and creative output.

Guns N’ Roses concerts in the 1990s were often plagued by riots and violence, which led to the cancellation of several shows.

1990s - 2000s

The band’s output slowed significantly during the 1990s and 2000s, with long delays between albums and a lack of new material.

1990s2000s

Axl Rose’s erratic behaviour, including showing up hours late for concerts, cancelling shows at the last minute, and engaging in public feuds with other musicians, damaged the band’s reputation.

2023

The band continues its Not in This Lifetime reunion tour, which, at over $500 million becomes one of the highest-grossing tours of all time.

2018

Guns N’ Roses releases Chinese Democracy, its first album of new material in 15 years but was met with mixed reviews and criticism, and it failed to live up to the high expectations set by the band’s earlier work.

EM SHERIF SEA CAFÉ ABU DHABI

The legendary Lebanese restaurant continues to expand

Al Maryah Island is quite the culinary destination, home to global big hitters such as Zuma, LPM and Coya. Adding to their ranks is the Em Sherif Sea Café, a seaside edition of the regionally renowned Lebanese restaurant. The new restaurant takes up residence inside the Rosewood Abu Dhabi, promising an elevated dining experience with a Mediterranean twist on the traditional Lebanese fare the restaurant is famed for.

Nautical-inspired interiors include hand painted tiles in blue and white and

ornate glass vases in vibrant azure, with grand fixtures given a homely touch, such as the eight-metre chandelier made from some 300 brass pots. Further adding to the seaside feel, the restaurant overlooks the water, with floor-to-ceiling windows ensuring views of the glistening canal are maximised. The best tables in the house are found right here, where the alfresco terrace oozes a relaxed Mediterranean vibe.

Keeping true to the roots of Em Sherif, we order everything to share, with dishes arriving as and when they’re ready. First to arrive is the banadoura khiar (Dhs48) a well-dressed salad of cucumber, tomato and spring

onion, given a zesty twist thanks to the lemon oil dressing.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

(Dhs43) doesn’t disappoint either, its creamy consistency perfect for dunking still-warm pieces of Arabic bread in. Sadly, the yellowtail carpaccio (Dhs93) isn’t quite as good, the slivers of yellowtail not quite sliced thin enough for our liking, and the green chilli flavour overpowers the freshness of the fish. We enjoy the fattet kraydis (Dhs66) much more, with sauteed shrimp marinated in a punchy chilli oil and served with yoghurt and crispy kadaif ribbons that add a crunchy texture. For dessert, we’re drawn to a homemade honey cake (Dhs53), which cements our feelings that this version of Em Sherif is a cut above the rest. A sweet sponge is topped with sugar and edible flowers that make it almost too pretty to eat.

REVIEW: ASADOR DE ARANDA

Superb Spanish cuisine where suckling lamb is the star

It’s amazing what six months can do for a cuisine in the capital. Before September 2022, authentic Spanish restaurants in Abu Dhabi were thin on the ground. Fast forward some 180 days and we now have two quality options: José by Pizarro in Conrad Abu Dhabi, which opened to much fanfare in March, and Asador de Aranda, which, on the contrary, opened ever so quietly in The Galleria at the tail end of last year.

Despite little media attention, word has got around about an unassuming Spanish export that slow cooks the best milk-fed lamb in the country. And so, on our early-bird weekday visit, the venue is fairly busy. It deserves to be rammed.

The décor has an old-fashioned feel: wooden columns, racing-green banquettes, heavy oak tables with leather place mats, black and white framed photos, and a very odd paint glass ceiling. But we’re not here for interior inspo. We’re here for what’s cooking inside that imposing purewood clay oven: great Spanish roast lamb.

The OG Asador de Aranda opened its doors in 1963 in Castilla y Leon serving Spanish-only roast lamb prepared in a wood-fire oven, and to this day, the brand has barely altered its cooking style. Now the company owns more than 20 outlets in Spain and a few internationally, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Spaniard and executive chef Antonio Santos has worked alongside the likes of Blumenthal and Ramsay, and run several Michelin-starred restaurants. But at Asador de Aranda, he’s returned to what makes him happiest – traditional Spanish home-cooking done well.

Asador de Aranda is Spanish cooking from perfectionists: the popular patatas bravas (Dhs50), for instance, are elevated to aristocracy, the potatoes double-fried until hypnotically crisp, their sauce sweet and ripe from good tomatoes, the aioli yellow from good egg yolks and pugnacious with garlic.

Six croquettes (Dhs55) are delicate of shell, their roasted chicken-laced béchamel filling creamy and dense. Just wonderful slurpy little indulgences. Then there’s the proletarian gambas al ajillo (Dhs88), an oily, garlicky tapas just touched with herbs, which whisks us straight to a summer’s day in Valencia. Then comes the moment we’ve been waiting for: a trolley rolls over from the oven towards our table. Resting there is our el cuarto de asado – suckling lamb leg (Dhs380, 1.2kg) sitting in its traditional clay pot. Roasted for three to four hours, its

crispy coating gives way to the tenderest, most succulent and milkiest of meat, seasoned only with salt. A thing of rare, faultless beauty. Even our charming server, Shani, looks at it beaming with pride.

Dessert-wise, it was our duty to try the churros (Dhs48), which was possibly the most authentic version we’ve had outside of Spain in that it was too hot to touch. It felt as if they had been delivered straight from the deep-fat fryer to our table, which is, in our opinion, the best way to enjoy them. Leave them to cool and you lose that vital freshness. These are piping hot, deep-fried and dense, served with dipping chocolate.

What’s not to love?

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:

ZUMA ABU DHABI

Some names carry a certain weight of expectation with them. Having your reputation precede you, invites a thief to the banquet of surprise and locks you into a life of unslippable standards. Zuma Abu Dhabi fits this profile with aplomb – part of a global network of gushed over gastronomic outlets, you don’t visit expecting mediocre. You visit expecting ‘wow’.

One full side of the restaurant floor is cleaved off by a giant glass wall, inviting sun rays in and lazy gazes of the Al Maryah Island waterfront out.

Much like the cuisine it provides a platform for, the format of the Baikingu Brunch is a gentle fusion. There’s izakaya energy found in the fare forged on the live robata cooking

station, tabletop togarashi edamame, miso soup and sharing sashimi plates; there is the incredible range of assorted buffet starters; the selection of restaurant signature dishes for your situ-served main course; and a dazzling trademark platter for dessert.

Particular glee is found in the nimbus-light puffs of shrimp tempura, fragrantly marinated shabu rolls, thick fillets of duck, assorted juicy nuggets of gyoza and robata-fired cuts of wagyu. A reputation for appetiser excellence, proudly defended, emerges unscathed. There is no doubt that this is exceptional brunching.

By this stage, main courses feel like deliberately spritzing perfume on the lily, a poetically-motivated sentiment for a

logical continuation but perhaps a little unnecessary. Still, portions of misomarinated black cod, jumbo tiger prawns, and grilled Australian wagyu ribeye with truffle mayo roll up to our table, alongside an iced carafe of sake.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

It’s purist brunching, a must for gourmands – a brunch where the food is the only entertainment required.

The cod is a raucous chorus of fencing umamis; the sear, char and provenance of the Aussie wagyu rib-eye are amongst the finest examples of this craft in the city, and have us calling for an encore; and the jumbo prawn dish is a firestorm of competing flavour plateaus, that have us singing back to the chef.

It all ends with the sweet refrain of the Zuma dessert platter. Refreshing fruit, mounds of mochi, fondant cakes and soothing ice cream. Though with authored sighs of “we cannot eat another bite”, another bite becomes another, and another.

The Galleria Al Maryah Island, Sat 12.30pm to 4pm, soft Dhs495, house including Prosecco Dhs595, Champagne Dhs695, kids four to 12, Dhs195. Tel: (0)2 401 5900. @zumaabudhabi

DRINK // BAR OF THE MONTH

BAR OF THE MONTH:

AMANO, EASTERN MANGROVES

A top spot for a tipple

When people use the term ‘sundowner spot’, a view is usually implied. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s impossible to enjoy sunset drinks in a windowless basement, but it’s the visual component rather than any arbitrary time stamp that gives the experience warmth.

We’re dissecting this classification because sundowner spots are having a moment in Abu Dhabi. And why not? There’s more than enough variety in the source material to support the medium. A quick inventory check of the capital list o’vistas reveals such potential panoramas as beaches, desert dunes, island waves, golf courses, tower top urban sprawl, coastal crawl and of course the emirate’s gorgeous green crop of mangroves canopies.

A lot of the latter is what you’ll find

running along the foot of the Eastern Mangroves promenade’s new F&B additions. Amongst the fold are a Japanese restaurant with conjoined Korean speakeasy and Amano, an Italian flavoured ‘bar and kitchen’ concept. We’ve waited until golden hour before coming to check Amano out, and just based on those rustic Tuscan looks alone, it’s clear that it’s Amano’ many talents.

We’ve got one of the best seats in the house, looking directly over the botanical hem that zips up the edge of the mangrove forest. The sun’s waning light paints flickering dimples on the water, and to

match the glow – we’ve ordered a pair of amber spritzes.

They arrive as we’re approaching the end of our menu deliberations. There are substantial plates on offer, pizzas and pastas, salads, soups, ‘secondi’ and sweets, but we’re in the mood for light bites and the housemade foccacia (a complimentary perk for patrons), along with some calamari fritta (Dhs48) feels like sufficient filling.

Amano is a very attractive project. The royal hues of whites and blues blend smartly and both the interior and exterior space have been put together under the direction of an eye for style. An additional side benefit is that Amano is located just in front of the Sea Hawk kayak safari terminal, provides triple-A people-watching opportunities.

What sets us apart from animals and robots? Well, some might argue that it’s our ability to create and interpret art. Frighteningly however, Artificial Intelligence is making it pretty difficult to distinguish between the two. JASON MANFORD RETURNS TO THE UAE THIS MONTH

CULTURE // COMEDY 44 MAY 2023 | WHATSON.AE

One of British stand-up comedy’s most treasured alumni, Jason Manford is returning to the UAE with The Laughter Factory, as part of their ongoing Selfdrive tour. He’ll be jetting into Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi on May 12.

We caught up with the comic ahead of his gig...

How would you describe your style of comedy to someone who’s never seen your work before?

I would say it’s relatable. It’s sort of family focused, but it is for adults. It’s not a kid’s show, but it’s a show that I think that you can bring your teenage kids and grandparents to, and we’ll all have a laugh.

How do you come up with the material for your stand-up shows? Do you have a particular process or a routine?

I think that it comes from listening to people, keeping your eyes open and also saying yes to things. That’s what I’ve learned in the last 20 years. If somebody offers you an opportunity that you think sounds a bit unusual, or out of your comfort zone, just say yes and just see where it goes, and you’d be surprised what I’ve ended up with. I got 20 minutes of routine by doing gigs for the troops in Afghanistan or when I took part in The Masked Singer and things like that. So, I think that’s important to try and just live a bit and experience stuff. I come home and I’ll say to my wife or my kids or my friends, ‘this thing happened today’, and if they’re, like, smiling or giggling, I think maybe there’s something there. They are a little bit like my guinea pigs, but they’re aware of it.

You’ve hosted a number of popular TV shows. How does hosting compare to performing stand up?

Well, there’s nothing like stand up. I love TV, radio and singing in all the musicals, but stand up is so direct. You’re not waiting for viewing figures or reviews or

anything like that. You just literally said something, they responded immediately, and you move on. There’s something quite magical about that.

How has your comedy style evolved over the years?

I think I’ve become more confident in my opinion. I think a lot of people do as they get older. I reckon 20 years ago, I’d be a bit more cagey about, like, ‘this is what I sort of think, but if you think that, then that’s fine,’ and I’d maybe look at it from different angles and now I just talk about it from that angle and hope people get on board. Or even if they disagree, they disagree in a sort of lighthearted way. So, yeah, I think I’ve become more robust on stage.

Do you think people have become more sensitive since you started?

It’s a question I get asked a lot, and I think yes and no. I think the world has, but I think comedy audiences haven’t. I mean, they’re still people who like to have their boundaries pushed and like to hear edgy things and they almost come for that. I think the reporting of the sensitivity is much bigger than it was now. Three

Tweets saying, ‘I found that offensive’ is a news story, and so then people think that the world has become softer when it hasn’t.

I don’t think there’s any harm in being more thoughtful and trying to incorporate your whole audience into your gig. I would hate for anyone to feel left out or upset about something I said on stage.

It’s easy to be offensive, it’s actually harder to do what I do, and what people like Michael McIntyre and Peter Kay do. If everyone leaves thinking ‘that was a great show’ then that’s what you want, not crying because of something you’ve said, that’s the opposite of your job.

Can you give us a sneak peek of what to expect from your show in Abu Dhabi?

I’m going to call it a mixed bag, because I’ve just done a tour of the UK, and I did the show in Dubai last April called Like Me

I also did a show called Muddle Class, I’ll probably throw a bit of that in. I did a show called First World Problems; I’ve got a bit of that. So, it’s a bit of a mismatch, and I’ll just see what pops into my head and we’ll have a laugh, and see who’s in the room to have a chuckle with them.

Monster Jam rolls into town

One of motorsport’s most exhilarating, preposterously sized, gargantuanly visceral, petrol-driven extravaganzas is locked in and scheduled to spin rubber in Abu Dhabi. Yas Island’s Etihad Arena will now be hosting two shows on Saturday May 13 (with doors opening at 1pm and 6pm respectively) and one on Sunday May 14 (doors opening at 1pm) for double date of motorised mayhem that is part of Monster Jam’s global 30th anniversary victory lap.

Fans of all ages will be able to catch the gravity-defying, 110kh, six-tonne, big-wheel escapades of legendary circuit veterans. Tickets are available via the etihadarena.ae and prices start at just Dhs135, with pit party access available for an additional Dhs50 and VIP packages from Dhs645.

These dates will be the first time Monster Jam has flaunted its off-road razzle dazzle in the UAE since 2013. These daring acts of brazen extremitypushing are all in the name of impressing you – the spectator – who, via your smart phone, is in charge of allocating scores and awe, ultimately deciding the league table of monster machines. KNOW YOUR MONSTERS

Though the exact line up of competing vehicles is yet to be finalised, we’re likely to see some huge names in the game...

Max-D

A fierce-looking contraption that wouldn’t look out of place on Mad Max’s fury road. With trademark spike in the rear and one of the tour’s most powerful engines on the tour, driver Tom Meents has worn the Monster Championship crown a stunning 14 times.

Grave Digger

This ghoulishly themed Monster Jam icon, detailed with emblematic green and black flames, made its debut in 1981. The Doctor Frankenstein behind the design, Dennis Anderson, has racked up four Monster Jam World Finals championships, capturing the racing title in 2004 and 2006, and the freestyle title in 2010 and 2000.

Megalodon

It’s always Shark Week when Megalodon is in the Arena. Named after one of the prehistoric ocean’s most feared predators, this five-tonne whopper is tough to catch and ever ready to ‘FIN-nish’ ahead of its competitors.

El Toro Loco

Born in 2001, this bullinspired OMG-wagon has been tearing through red rags ever since. It takes a crew of four to tame this bull, with drivers including some of the sport’s best-known names: Becky McDonough, Chuck Werner and Marc McDonald. Fitted with nasal exhaust outlets and a 3D moulded body – this is one species of cattle that you definitely don’t want to meet in a china shop.

KEY

Imagine you’re taking part in Squid Game, but the final challenge is Mario Kart. Which driver are you gonna pick? Sure, you could go with someone embarrassingly obvious like the guy whose name is actually in the title of the game, or his brother. You could just go right ahead and select the Nissan Patrol-sized unit that is Bowser, but you know who we’d choose? The original fun-guy of the Mushroom Kingdom... Toad. In the newly released The Super Mario Bros. Movie, he plays a central role in the story, as a sort of consigliere character, aiding our questing protagonists on their heroic journey.

He’s being brought to life by legendary comedian, actor, writer and producer, Keegan-Michael Key, a man with a singularly impressive voice acting CV. We’re talking The Lego Movie, The Lion King (reboot), the Hotel Transylvania franchise, Storks, The Angry Birds Movie, The Star, Wendell & Wild, Archer, Pinocchio and enough remaining titles to ostensibly turn this article into an IMDB

page. We got the opportunity to talk oneon-one with the man with the chameleon voice, and this is what he had to say...

You’ve racked up quite the number of animated movie credits over the past few years. How does this one compare in terms of freedom to ad-lib or have fun with the creative process? I had a wonderful time coming up with the voice. It’s fun when you can make a

voice sound completely different to your own, because sometimes you’re asked to just interpret the lines in your own voice. I did get to ad-lib and improvise quite a bit. Not all of it makes it into the movie of course, but at least you’re given the freedom to do it. Sometimes it just gets you into the mood. You know you’re not going to use it, but you want to make the director or the engineer laugh.

On Donkey Kong and which cast member is the best at playing Mario Kart
MARIO MOVIE: WHAT’S ON IN CONVERSATION WITH KEEGAN-MICHAEL

Are you much of a gamer? Did you have much experience playing the Mario titles before this?

Well, my big game back in the day was Donkey Kong. It was the original Mario game with Donkey Kong and Princess Peach standing up there next to him. That’s really my experience of playing the game. I have certainly played Super Mario Bros. through the years, but I was always obsessed with Donkey Kong.

What do you think are some of the more important takeaways from the movie?

I think one of them is just this basic theme of never giving up. It’s a characteristic that Mario has where he is willing to take on every task in the midst of this adventure that he’s on. He’s just willing to go up against the odds. And I think that that’s something that’s actually very inspiring about the movie. There’s also this familial loyalty that he has to Luigi and doing everything he can to protect him. I think that that’s going to resonate with people quite a bit.

Did you have an idea for Toad’s voice right from the outset?

I did, I actually used a friend as inspiration. There was a friend who I was trying to use his vocal rhythms and his vocal tendencies. I brought that into the director, and he said “That’s good, I like that. Can you pitch it up a little bit?” I keep pitching up and then finally I’m in the stratosphere, and so we just had to figure out where Toad’s voice would be.

Did you and the crew ever play Mario Kart together?

Well, just recently we had a Mario Kart session with the other actors. I played with Seth Rogen, Chris Pratt, Charlie Day and Jack Black. And I’ve got to tell you, Jack Black is a gamer. He was absolutely killing us. He’s very good at Mario Kart, and I am not by the way. I enjoy it, but I’m not good at it. I just try to do better every time. I come in 12th place, and then maybe next time I’ll come in 11th place.

Were you racing as Toad or was it just kind of a free for all?

Yeah, I was racing as Toad because I wanted to stay in character.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is out in cinemas now.

FILM REVIEW:

A horror comedy that’s gorily, cartoonishly-violently brilliant

For those of you with TikTok-savaged attention spans, here’s our elevator review: Renfield feels like a dialled-up, unashamedly brazen Dusk Till Dawn and Brooklyn Nine-Nine crossover project with Nicholas Cage as an archetypal Dracula and Nicholas Hoult on ghoulishly good form.

Most of us have experienced a toxic relationship at some point in our lives. It could have been a romantic entanglement, an unhealthy workplace dynamic, or just siblings lighting the touch-paper of familial trauma in a way that only people who sleep in horizontally tiered bedding can. There’s usually asymmetry within the tryst, one partner being the more toxic (obviously not you), but the truth is this sort of relationship can only exist for as long as there is a codependent element to it. There must be an enabler.

That relatively dense psychological premise (co-dependence) – its identification and eventual rejection of – forms a large part of the spinal column of Renfield. It’s a Dracula (Cage) movie, a nouvelle vague Nosferatu feature that feasts on the rich narrative vein of what sort of effect bestowing immortality on a loyal servant (Renfield, played by Hoult) might have. A gift that was coercively

sold on a platform of gaslighting, false promise and pyramid scheming. It’s a live autopsy on how feelings of resentment, mistreatment and being undervalued might ferment into an unhealthy, employer-employee relationship.

At the beginning of the film we’re given a whistlestop monochrome montage of Dracula movies through the ages with Cage and Hoult’s characters superimposed onto the frame. Renfield has been a part of Dracula lore since the jump, appearing in the OG Emo source text, Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, and a good percentage of the celluloidal reimaginings since. As you might expect from a movie that trades under the character’s name, this story is largely seen through the eyes and set to the monologuing of arch lord of the undead manservant, Renfield.

Our tale unfolds in the modern era. Being over a century old now, it’s an epoch the two central characters are struggling to adapt to. And, in addition to his shortcomings as a nurturing boss (honestly, the state of those one-on-one evaluations), it’s widely known that the malicious old Count also

50 MAY 2023 | WHATSON.AE CULTURE // FILM

RENFIELD

suffers from a severe sunlight allergy, and because of PTSD from attempted wooden stakings, EpiPens are not an option.

So it’s Renfield who is delegated the task of going out and sourcing victims to feed the Transylvanian tyrant’s bloodlust (and life force). He finds a ready supply in the souls that force individuals into emotional support groups. But it’s an occupation that becomes immeasurably more complicated when Renfield’s recruitment project inadvertently overlaps with the operations of a local gang boss (Teddy, played by Ben Schwartz) and a principled, maverick cop (Rebecca Quincy, played by Awkwafina).

Renfield runs thick with themes of love and duty, and little Freudian tickles under the chin – a treatment on manipulation, Stockholm Syndrome of the mind, selfempowerment, and catharsis. But, at its blood-flushed heart, it’s a horror comedy, that celebrates each side of that dual heritage with a reverence, than can only come from a true love of the genres.

Each cast member brings their own form of humour to the movie. There’s the menacing gothic self-aware camp of Cage’s Dracula; the chaotic pratfalling gangster Teddy is ostensibly a ‘made-guy’ version of Jean-Ralphio (Schwartz’s character in Parks and Rec) and fully deserves his own spin off.

Awkwafina’s comic timing and rapid fire delivery is demonstrative of a craft master; but it’s the wrylydry Britishness of Nicholas Hoult that impresses most. Like discovering your perfectly serviceable striker just happens to be a brick wall goalkeeper in comedy, it appears we’ve stumbled upon optimal Hoult. Despite a decidedly straight and serious filmography, Hoult’s final form might just be ‘comic actor’. Renfield flows in tangents

and sparks with farce, it’s pepper sprayed with incredible fight sequences choreographed in deliberately audacious violence. Cockroaches and bug viscera are to Renfield, what spinach is to Popeye. And after powering up, we’re showered in comic splatter and gore galore, there’s even a moment where a pair of aggressors are kebabbed by the ripped-off arms of another foe. And that feels like as good-aplace as any to leave this review.

Renfield is available to watch in cinemas across the UAE now.

ever heard. His name is literally Tedward ‘Teddy’ Lobbo and I think the focus is the origin story of when he first meets Dracula and gets these powers, every great villain needs one — like when Joker gets his smile.

How much flexibility did director Chris McKay and the team give you with developing the character?

Your character is a bit of a loveable rogue. If he was to get his own spin off, or prequel, what would it be called?

His first name is ‘Tedward’ so I think the show would be called that, just because I think it’s the stupidest name I’ve

They gave me quite a bit. Once I got the role and we started chatting about stuff, we kind of worked on it together. But the biggest leniency they gave me was in the scenes themselves, Chris would let me improvise in just about every scene, so we’d do it as is, then we’d find little moments that weren’t in the script and explore those, and that was fun. My background is in improv, so it was very fun to use those muscles.

Go golfing after dark

For many people, night golf likely conjures images of belting drives at Topgolf or weaving a ball through windmills and waterfalls at miniature golf. But Abu Dhabi Golf Club offers classic play on The Garden Course, its premium nine-hole golf course, illuminated by a state-of-the-art floodlight system that allows for play from dawn until dusk. With four different tee options, this course is perfect for beginners looking to practice their skills before tackling the full Championship Course. Non-member prices start from Dhs225.

MAKING MEMORIES IN Milan

A captivating city that’s rich with history and elegant charm

TRAVEL // MILAN
58 MAY 2023 | WHATSON.AE

A BUCKET LIST STAY

Park Hyatt Milan

When it comes to luxury hotels, location matters. Usually, you’d find a highend property either right in the heart of the action, or out in a remote spot surrounded by nature. Park Hyatt Milan falls into the former category, an actual stone’s throw from the grand Duomo cathedral and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy’s oldest active shopping gallery. Embedded into the iconic Milano architecture, within a building that dates back to 1870, the hotel opened in 2003 and recently underwent a renovation, meaning that after two decades, the beauty and sophistication of the property remains the ultimate focus.

While the entrance is subtly grand, inside is where Park Hyatt Milan makes its first statement. The lobby lounge, La Cupola, sits under a nine-metre-tall glass cupola, flooding the room with light. Echoing the spherical window is the curved seating area, where guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as cocktails.

We stay in a King Deluxe room, which looks out onto the closely positioned building next door. But what it lacks in views, it makes up for in interiors. We could happily move into the spacious marble-clad bathroom which oozes pure luxury. The bedroom is equally decent-sized, with a small dining area next to the large, comfortable bed. The colour palette throughout the hotel is warm and inviting, taking in natural light wherever possible.

Breakfast is a treat for the senses, with a mix of both buffet and a la carte dishes. Everything is executed to the highest standard, to suit the mostly business travel clientele in-house during our stay. hyatt.com

UNMISSABLE EATS

All’antico Vinaio

There aren’t many places we’d queue for 45 minutes in sub-10-degree temperatures for, and yet we soon find ourselves on the pavement outside All’antico Vinaio, wondering if this hyped sandwich shop, with outposts in New York and LA, will live up to its reputation. Inside, the tightly packed counter displays a wide selection of sandwich fillings, including fresh and high-quality meats, cheeses and vegetables. High energy staff dance around each other moving in an effortless production line like the trained professionals they are. Our sandwich sets us back 10 Euros (approx. Dhs40) and we’re swiftly ushered outside to eat it so more people can fit inside. The sandwich is a classic focaccia, crisp and crunchy on the outside, light and bubbly inside, and thin enough to ensure the filling to bread ratio is just right. We’ve gone for sliced honey roast ham, Emmental, pesto, and sundried tomatoes. It’s simple, sure, but the result of using only the best ingredients casts no doubt in our mind about whether it was worth the long wait. allanticovinaio.com

Maccheroni –Cucina Italiana

In the Risorgimento area is a restaurant famed for one signature dish. Here, the humble carbonara is served in a silver pan alongside a complimentary glass of Prosecco and a warm smile. The homemade pasta comes as large al dente rigatoni tubes, with chunky, juicy bacon pieces served extra crispy on top, before being doused with Parmesan. Well-executed, if a little too on the salty side for our taste, for those looking for a traditional carbonara, don’t skip this spot. maccheronicucinaitaliana.com

The Dome Rooftop

For us, rooftop bars are a must on every new city visit. And in Milan, they don’t come chicer than The Dome. Perched atop the building famed for having a huge lit-up Gucci sign, guests are treated to views of Duomo from above. The space is beautifully boho, with rattan chairs, tasselled parasols and pretty pink foliage. Inside, the greenery continues, cascading over cosy booths finished in brown leather and Aztec patterned cushions. Here, The Dome serves a range of dishes, including Japanese wagyu sandwiches, glazed salmon, black cod, truffle pizza and saffron risotto. thedomemilano.com

CONTEMPORARY LIVING

Hyatt Centric Milan Centrale

Catering to easy-going business travellers or explorers with style, Hyatt Centric offers contemporary living in the heart of the city. A short walk from the metro station, the cool, colourful lobby is adorned with graffiti murals and bright furniture. The rooms are a little more subdued, with brown leather quilted headboards, sophisticated grey furniture and large windows overlooking the city. Downstairs boasts a spacious coworking space, with a large, shared desk and cosy reading nooks to chill out in. Hyatt Centric’s rooftop bar, Sky Garden, was closed on our visit, but is opening this month for the summer season. Elsewhere, guests can enjoy dinner at Rivington Cucina New York, the hotel’s upmarket Italian American restaurant inspired by the allure of Manhattan. The space is dark and atmospheric, with white clothed tables and luxurious red leather seating. Whether starting your night with cocktails, or spending the evening sampling the menu, it’s sure to tick all the boxes. hyatt.com

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

See the ancient canals

The Naviglio Grande (Grand Canal) is one of Europe’s oldest navigable canals, dating way back to 1177. Milan was once traced with waterways similarly to Venice, allowing architects to send marble via boat to build the Duomo. In order to build Milan into the bustling city we know today, a network of canals had to be developed, which was carried out between the 12th and 17th centuries. Many became buried in concrete in the 20th century, as boats were replaced by cars and trains. However, you can still enjoy a piece of this unique history at Naviglio Grande. The area is filled with bustling cafés and restaurants, as well as local market stalls.

Have an immersive spa experience

The viral TikTok that put this spa on the map showed the world exactly why this experience is a must-try in Milan. Not your average spa, QC Termemilano is a converted train station that offers a five-hour spa experience across a range of rooms and treatment options. There’s an outdoor jacuzzi, sauna train, sleep room, and the now-famous thunderstorm simulation pool. While the small plunge pool is bubbling with water, the surroundings create the simulation of a storm, complete with heavy rain falling from the roof, crashing sounds and flashes of light, while LED screens show clouds, lightning and auroras of colour. The full day (five-hour) experience is priced at €55 (approx. Dhs221) plus €20 (approx. Dhs80) for access to the buffet in the restaurant. qcterme.com

Shop in the world’s oldest mall

A trip to Milan simply isn’t complete without visiting Galleria Vittorio. Even if you’re not looking to shop (or window shop) the gallery itself is an incredible landmark. Opened in 1877, it’s known as the oldest mall in the world, and is covered by a stunning arched glass roof. Some of the world’s most luxurious brands and boutiques have a home there, further adding to the overall aesthetic. Found close to Milan’s other main landmarks, Teatro alla Scala and Duomo di Milano, it’s easy for tourists to tick off all three attractions in one go. The area is filled with top restaurants and bars, so you can enjoy a full day out without leaving.

Step back

With twice-weekly direct flights from Dubai to AlUla, there really has never been a better time to visit this incredible destination. Emerging from our three-hour flight, we feel as though we’ve stepped back in time, thanks to AlUla’s alluring preservation of its ancient roots. The drive from the airport takes us through quiet, dusty roads and winding valleys, surrounded by unique rock formations, which have naturally weathered to reveal artistic patterns we can’t take our eyes off.

Our first stop is Habitas AlUla, a sustainable villa-only resort with three room categories, each offering cosy cabinstyle accommodation with an outdoor terrace and rustic wooden furniture. Like a scene from a Wild West movie, we’re

surrounded by dusty mountains, sand and an overwhelming sense that ‘we’re not in Dubai anymore’. The resort is built in a large upward-sloping part of Ashar Valley, but guests can make use of golf carts or electric bikes to get around. At the top is Tama, the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant and its outdoor pool. The chilly weather puts us off taking a dip but the undeniable beauty of the infinity pool against the mountain backdrop has us reaching for our phone to snap pictures. Tama’s expansive menu features a fusion of European and Middle Eastern dishes, all prepared and presented to an impeccable standard. On a chilly AlUla evening the slow-cooked lamb shank was a heart-warming treat, while in the morning we for-go the selection of eggs for a deliciously indulgent French toast coated in fresh berries, nuts and caramel sauce.

Town to really immerse themselves into the history and heritage of this fascinating location.

Another must-see spot in AlUla is Hegra – Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to 111 monumental tombs, Hegra is sure to take your breath away. We took the sunrise tour which begins at 6am. We hop in a ‘vintage’ Land Rover (the cars are actually brand new but Land Rover custom-built the vintage-looking cars just for Hegra), and drive to Tomb of Lihyan, Son of Kuza – a 72-foot-tall tomb that has become the symbol of AlUla. In our uninitiated haste, we presumed that this was the extent of what there is to see, but over the 90-minutes that followed, our eyes were opened to the incredible display of tombs around the area, as we listened intently to our guide sharing insights into the rich heritage of Hegra. What we loved most about this experience is the fact that their excavations are ongoing, meaning that the archaeological team are discovering new pieces of history all the time. Rather than absorbing information passed down from decades ago, we’re told about new discoveries learned just months ago.

Back at Habitas, our time is filled with moving between the collection of cultural pop-ups, including the famed in-ground trampolines (Manal AlDowayan’s installation called Now You See Me, Now You Don’t), where we work up a sweat before stretching out in the wellness centre. The Thuraya Spa provides welcome relief to our tight knots and sends us into a soft slumber of deep relaxation.

We’re staying in an Alcove Villa, which has a private wooden terrace offering a close-up view of the sandstone canyons. Inside, an industrial yet ultra-comfortable king-size bed takes centre stage, facing the floor-to-ceiling windows for maximum views. The bathroom continues the rustic theme, with wooden flooring and a powerful shower both inside and outdoors, and more huge windows to give the impression of being closer to nature.

While we could quite easily stay in the resort throughout our stay, we’re here to explore the city, starting with Old Town. The first thing that strikes us as we being to stroll around the area, is just how bright and captivating the stars are. Even our outdated iPhone 12 manages to capture the night’s sky in incredible detail. After craning our neck from walking with our face to the solar system, we return to earth and take in the beauty down here, too.

Old Town has been meticulously preserved since it was abandoned in the 1970s. Its labyrinth of tightly packed streets and ancient mud houses give an accurate impression of how residents lived here in the 12th century. Back then, AlUla Old Town became an essential settlement along the pilgrimage route from Damascus to Makkah, and the market traders once used for exchanging goods, has been revitalised into an authentic evening market housed by local sellers. Vistors can book a guided tour around Old

Despite filling our itinerary with the many attractions AlUla has to offer, we’ve barely scratched the surface. We’re already planning our return, when we will explore The Adventure Hub, Maraya and Elephant Rock. experiencealula.com

Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas

Need an escape to an idyllic island? There’s no need for a plane ticket – just head on over to this stunning, oneof-a-kind, five-star property on Abu Dhabi’s breath-taking Saadiyat Island.

LOCATION

Located on the cultural destination of Saadiyat Island, Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas is located mere minutes from some of the most popular tourist spots in Abu Dhabi, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, The Abrahamic Family House, Manarat Al Saadiyat and the soon-toopen Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. Besides soaking in the art history and culture, the island is home to white sandy beaches, greenery and even a critically endangered species, the Hawksbill turtle.

LOOK AND FEEL

One thing that comes to mind as soon as you walk through the resort’s entrance, is how vast it is. The five-star property makes us think we’re in a resort tucked away in a remote location than the UAE’s cosmopolitan capital. The resort brags

striking modern Arabic architecture and while walking through the lobby, we spot framed sand dunes from all seven emirates embedded in the floor.

ROOMS

Home to over 300 rooms and suites and 13 beach villas, the rooms boast modern and elegant interiors. Tall windows open up to striking views of the beach or garden landscape, while the open-plan bathroom features a walk-in shower and huge bathtub. Our spacious sea view suite comes with one bedroom, a separate spacious living room and private balconies to soak in the views. After a long day of indulgence, the soft queen-sized bed was just what we needed for a good night’s sleep.

FACILITIES

For those who hate to skip a workout, there’s a tennis court, padel tennis courts, and mini golf; while the little ones can burn off their energy at the kids’ club –Aladdin’s Cave – or at the pool, which has

a lazy river, splash pool, slides and more. If you’re looking to relax, head on over to the What’s On Award-winning Zen The Spa, which offers a selection of massages, facials and beauty and well-being treatments to soothe the mind and body.

FOOD AND DRINK

Sim Sim restaurant hosts a mammoth Market Brunch. There’s everything from Mexican to Indian, mezze, and a grill counter. It’s so huge that we couldn’t fit in all the cuisines on offer. For dinner, we make our way over to Si Ristorante Italiano & Bar. Packed with Italian favourites, we whittled our choices down to the risotto and the mozzarella di buffalo campana pizza – a lighter cheesy pizza option for those fans of quattro formaggi. We pick the highly recommended tiramisu for dessert, which we scraped off the serving dish. For breakfast, it’s back to Sim Sim for another huge spread spanning multiple cuisines. The hotel is also home to Hamilton’s Gastropub, Turtle Bay Bar & Grill, Nasma Beachfront Bar and Sama Lobby Lounge.
