ONE TASTY LITTLE BENEFIT OF LIVING IN A COSMOPOLITAN CITY...

The food, glorious food. If, like us here at What’s On, your palate has a chronic case of wanderlust, there’s a whole international buffet of options to choose from in Dubai. Chewed, smorgasbord, food, hot pots and tataki. While you’re in the mood, cold cuts and souvlaki? Machboos, burgers and caviar, what next for the brunch dish? Rich gentlemen have it friends, truffle-topped raw fish. Oh, food. Glorious food.

If you’ve never watched the Oliver musical, that will seem like a strange way of delivering the message, but the core sentiment remains: Dubai is home to a United Nations of gastronomic superpowers. Almost every culinary corner of the map is covered, whatever you’re craving, whatever your fancy, you’ll likely find a refined ambassador for it here. And to assist with navigating this edible atlas, we’ve compiled some of our favourite flag wavers – old and new, hit up the GPS coordinates from page 12.

Food is art. But, if you prefer your demonstrations of human creativity in the more traditional brush daubs and abstract metaphor format, you can unveil the best of this year’s Art Dubai festival from page 25. We’re aiming a blistering, barista-backed spotlight on Dubai’s brewing, cappuccinos-in-the-air, café rave scene on page 36; the UAE’s must-see cultural flex-hibits on page 42; a night clubber’s manifesto on page 45; and sport clubber’s digest from page 53.

All of that plus a bonus brunch guide on the side, the most important new reviews, big DJs on the ones and twos, travel plans that’ll banish the most stubborn workweek blues, and a LOLpacked deep dive on a comic from the land of kangaroos.

Enjoy the issue,

Through MY EYES

THE

UAE ACCORDING TO...

Laura Lai Coughlin

This month, we chat with former What’s On editor, turned guidebook author and social media personality Laura Lai Coughlin (@bylauralai), whose candid conversations with big foodie personalities have captured the attention of thousands. Laura has lived in and loved Dubai for over 13 years, championing the city. Here, she shares her “Very Best of Dubai”…

I love Mama Shelter Dubai because it’s bold, playful, and nothing like the city’s usual hotels. No marble or gold – just vibrant Art Deco arches, an LED-lit ceiling, and a poolside paradise with nautical flags and fringed umbrellas. The outdoor cinema plays vintage cartoons, and the whole place feels like a Wes Anderson-meets-’70s-Vegas dream. Fun, rebellious, and refreshingly different – Mama Shelter has shaken up Dubai’s hotel scene for the better.

@mamashelterdubai

Could I eat at FZN by Björn Frantzén every day? No – nine indulgent courses would wreak havoc on my long-suffering BMI, and at Dhs2,000 per head (sans drinks), I’d be absconding faster than Lovin’ Dubai could post about it. But is it worth it? Absolutely. Every dish is obsessively perfected, from poached turbot in walnut butter to langoustine-topped koshihikari rice. It’s pure, orchestrated dining magic – the most divine meal I’ve had in Dubai this year. @restaurantfzn

Available via Careem App

Pushing 40 now, on a good day I move like a zombie in a low-budget horror movie. To fight the fat, I go to 1Rebel, a brilliant studio in ICD Brookfield Place. My class of choice is Reshape, a mix of treadmill sprints and weights exercises. Whichever wonderful, mildly sadistic, trainer is on the mic that morning, fuels us with enough enthusiasm to hit personal bests. I zoom to level 16, prematurely celebrate, then stagger down to 14, 10, 5, and eventually collapse on the floor. Will repeat until my body looks like trainers Jade/Sarah/Courteney et al... @1rebel_uae

No offense to cutlery, but some foods are just better with your hands: fried chicken, burgers, popcorn, and my go-to right now, Kokoro’s handrolls. They’ve become my go-to lunch in Dubai – quick, delicious, and satisfying. I love sitting at the counter, ordering a spicy tuna handroll (or three), and watching the chefs behind the bar work their magic.

@kokoro.dxb

My best friend is currently in training for the London Marathon, which means she’s been pounding the pavements like a trooper this year. In an attempt to be an ever-supporting pal, I’ve joined her… by bike. Careem’s hire bikes are a revelation. For just Dhs20, I zoom along Kite Beach, cheer her on, and even grab a Salt burger as a reward. It’s a win-win for both of us – she gets the miles in, and I get some grub.

I’m not much of a shopper, but I do love the art of gift-giving. When in doubt, I head straight to Heart Cottage Lane, a home-grown interiors boutique in Arjan where you can discover bespoke homeware hand-selected by Lucy Gibson, the stylish founder of Sand Dollar Dubai. I’ve picked up everything from Palm-embroidered napkins and cheeky tea plates to the OG fish guggle jug. You can’t go wrong. @heartcottagelanedxb

TLa Niña: An authentic Latino Iberian experience

Why this restaurant in DIFC stands out as a true culinary gem

ucked away in the uncontrived sophistication of ICD Brookfield Place, La Niña is a sparkling collision of Latin American soul and Iberian flair, a DIFC hotspot serving up uniquely chic dining experience, and some truly authentic cuisine.

La Niña is a stately vision clad in azulejo tiles. During daylight hours the interior space is lit up by the venue’s floor-to-ceiling windows running the full length of the outer walls. The aesthetic keystone comes from the blue and white naval murals that tattoo the restaurant’s backdrop.

With a variety of experiential dining and soiree-ing experiences spread across the main

restaurant, a stunning Garden Terrace, the venue’s bars, wine cellar, and The Lounge –there’s always a setting to fit the mood.

There’s a variety of ways to explore Chef Timothy Newton’s exquisite selection of menus too. Take the fire and fuego of the energetic La Comida Saturday Brunch for example, Flamenco Nights or the unrivalled value of the weekday Business Lunch. It’s a prime spot for after-work drinks, elegant date nights and a memorable dining experience with loved ones.

And whilst the art is proudly displayed in every fibre of the venue’s design, it’s the food where it really comes alive. Their Pulpo a la Gallega delivers that perfect kiss of smokiness, while the Rabo de Toro with is a masterclass in balance, bold and nuanced, deeply satisfying yet impossibly refined. And then there’s the Gambas al Ajillo, a symphony of fresh prawn and soul-warming tradition.

Pair it all with a handcrafted cocktail, perhaps the Mariachi, the perfect choice to celebrate the start of your evening.

La Niña delivers with a kind of effortless charisma. Make a reservation today, and prepare to be swept away.

Along with the weekly crop of restaurant debuts that call Dubai home, the city is also filled with some truly iconic foods that help shape its culinary landscape. Whether you just moved here, are visiting for the first time, or a long-time restaurant who’s craving a familiar favourite, some of these landmark spots and dishes have been around since the seventies, while others are more recent but still impactful. For your next outing, here are 17 unmissable foods and dining experiences to try in Dubai.

1

Tiff’s Table

For new supper club fun

Tiff’s Table is a brand-new supper club in Dubai, curated by South African-born chef Tiffany Eslick. Held in her cosy apartment with an eclectic tablescape, it brings together diverse guests for intimate dining experiences focused on good food. After training at the prestigious Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland, Eslick showcases seasonal, local ingredients, including produce from Emirates Bio Farm, Below Farm and Dibba Bay oysters to spectacular effect. The vibrant, welcoming atmosphere encourages solo diners to connect, making it the perfect setting for anyone seeking great food and new friendships. The next seating takes place on April 27. DM directly for reservations. @tiffstable

2

Al Damyati Express For lamb chops and silky hummus

If you’re after five-star service and mood lighting, Al Damyati isn’t your spot. But if you’re here for 1kg of perfectly grilled, smoky lamb chops (Dhs200) that beg to be nibbled straight off the bone – welcome to old-school Al Damyati Express. The atmosphere? Think canteenstyle with bright lights, no frills, just pure, carnivorous joy. And the best part? A massive, silky-smooth plate of hummus – perfect for dunking every juicy bite. Tucked away in Karama, this is the kind of place where the food does all the talking. And it’s got a lot to say.

Al Damyati Express, 43 Al Quds Street, Bur Dubai, daily 7am to 1am. Tel: (0)4 268 7555. @al_damyati_express_ restaurant_

Chef Tiffany Eslick

Rumailah Farm Cafe

For locally-sourced ice-cold milkshakes

Let’s face it: a milkshake is just a way to eat double the amount of ice cream in half the time. And at Rumailah Farm’s drive-thru, they take that mission seriously. Made with the freshest, creamiest dairy straight from their happy herd of Jersey cows in Fujairah, these shakes are a game-changer. The Mango Milkshake (Dhs23) is like sipping sunshine, while the Peanut Butter Milkshake (Dhs23) is pure, nutty indulgence. No artificial flavours – just rich, velvety goodness. Swing by their Jumeirah Road drive-thru, grab a shake, and prepare for a brain freeze that’s 100 per cent worth it.

Rumailah Farm Café, daily 8am to 3am, 809 Jumeirah Beach Road, Tel: (0)4 333 0001. @rumailah.farm

4

Dibba Bay Farm Shop For locally-grown oysters

A table by the seaside while enjoying some oysters is a pretty unbeatable pairing and, luckily for you, Dibba Bay’s oyster shack – located in Dubai Fishing Harbour 2 – and its line-up of fresh oysters make it a reality. These locally farmed bivalves from the UAE’s eastern coast are shucked to order and served in the traditional way with a selection of condiments, including mignonette, and cocktail sauce. We suggest ordering a dozen, alongside a plate of organic smoked salmon, local soft cheeses and bruschetta.

Dibba Bay Farm Shop, Fishing Harbour 2, Umm Suqeim. Tel: (0)54 438 8537. @dibbabay

3

Kokoro Hand Roll Bar

For spectacular hand rolls

5

Making waves in Alserkal Avenue, Kokoro Hand Roll Bar is all about, you guessed it, addictive open-faced temaki (hand rolls). You can enjoy them a la carte or opt for omakase-style sets of three to five, offering everything from the traditional spicy tuna to creative takes on surf and turf. Pair your rolls with a selection of small plates while soaking in the sleek, minimalist vibe of the space, complete with quirky rubber ducks – a playful tribute to the Texasbased chef, Daniel “Ducky” Lee. Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, daily noon to 12.30am. No reservations. eatekokoro.xyz. ALSO: Nad Al Sheba

Bu Qtair

For the fishermen’s catch of the day

There was a time at Bu Qtair when you had to park on a dusty side street, place your order in a wobbly caravan, find a plastic stool, and then eat your dinner off polystyrene plates. It was fun and cute. Thanks to its runaway success, what was once a charming fish shack in a Jumeirah car park has evolved and now operates out of Dubai Fishing Harbour. Freshly-caught fish is seasoned well and cooked simply – it’s as straightforward as that but, boy, does it deliver on taste and memories.

Bu Qtair, Old 32B Street - Umm Suqeim, daily 1pm to 11.30pm (1.30pm on Fri). Tel: (0)55 705 2130. buqtairrestaurant.com

Salt For homegrown beachside burgers

There are only a few foods that are suitable to be eaten while wearing soggy swimwear. Pizza, tacos – go ahead. Afternoon tea? Not so much. Burgers, however, are the ideal fodder after a splash in the sea, and their diminutive cousins, sliders, even more so. Salt Burger on Kite Beach has the perfect blend of food, packaging, location and seating. Stroll off the beach, knock the sand off your flip flops, and join the queue for the most moreish, tasty, juicy sliders in Dubai (the fries are awesome, too). And when the sun starts to dip… wow, the scene is idyllic.

Three by Eva For knock-your-socks-off feta brûlée

In a city filled with Middle Eastern food institutions, Three by Eva –opened in 2021 –may still be one of the new kids on the block. But thanks to its smash-hit homage to homely Arabic cuisine, crafted by mother and daughters Eva Halasa, Emilie, and Lilian, it has already cemented itself as an icon. One standout dish?

The unforgettable feta brûlée – a marriage of feta, dates, and thyme, with the cheese caramelised into a delicate, crackling coat. It’s a flavour tripwire of sweet and savoury, best enjoyed with their homemade walnut and dates sourdough bread. This gorgeous dish (and its flame-torched top) is just one of the many must-try items at the Al Wasl eatery – now also available at their new home in Time Out Market –proving why Three by Eva remains one of Dubai’s most beloved homegrown spots. Three by Eva, Villa 53, Al Wasl Road, Jumeira 2, daily 9am to 1am. Tel: (0)4 576 2888. @threebyeva. ALSO: Time Out Market

Salt, Kite Beach, 24/7. Tel: (600) 555551. @findsalt

Gerbou For high-end Emirati cuisine

Set Alsham For street-side shawarma

Until now, Emirati cuisine has been overlooked in the fine-dining world, rarely given the spotlight it deserves. Gerbou aims to change that. Opened in February, this architecturally-stunning Nad Al Sheba gem is celebrating local flavours with a contemporary touch, blending Emirati tradition with modern technique. Championing the UAE’s growing farmto-table movement, chef Ionel Catau and Emirati pastry chef Sahar Al Awadhi source well over half of their ingredients locally. Fujairah prawns, kissed by the grill and brightened with za’atar salsa verde, sit alongside a staple chicken machboos, topped with locally grown vegetables and spiced in homage to the UAE’s deeprooted culinary ties with India, among other mezze treats and mixed grills. Put it to the top of your must-visit list. Gerbou, Tashkeel, Nad Al Sheba, from 7pm. Tel: (0)4 222 6888. gerbou.com

Feras Restaurant & Sweets For real-deal kunafa

Shawarmas come in many forms – chicken or beef, packed with pickles and veggies, slathered in hummus or dripping with garlic sauce. In Dubai, finding a great shawarma is never a challenge, but some stand out above the rest. We’re especially partial to the Syrian-style meat shawarma from Set Alsham on Beach Road. Wrapped in their house-made saj bread, grilled to crispy perfection, and served with a special garlic sauce, it’s a shawarma experience worth seeking out. The extra char from the grill gives it that irresistible smoky crunch – simple, satisfying, and delicious. Set Alsham, Beach Road, daily 11am to 2am. Tel: (0)52 785 6449. @shawarma_set_alsham 11 9

Among Dubai’s iconic foods, kunafa is the golden child. This beloved Palestinian dessert is a rich, buttery indulgence that deserves the spotlight. Since kunafa is so dear to our hearts, we’ll happily order a 1kg wheel (Dhs105, good for up to six people) from Feras, a Dubai institution that has been serving truly magical kunafa for decades. It starts with clarified butter-soaked filo dough, layered with mild cheese curd, then baked to golden perfection. A final drizzle of rosewater and orange blossom syrup and a sprinkle of pistachios complete this irresistible masterpiece.

Feras Restaurant & Sweets, Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Barsha, daily 8am to 2am. Tel: (0)4 341 3123. ferassweets.ae

CQ French Brasserie

For the perfect steak frites

As you’ve probably noticed, we’re in the midst of a steak frites renaissance, with restaurants offering everything from casual, neighbourhood-style dishes to indulgent, luxe versions worth every penny. Dubai’s culinary scene can easily support multiple steak-frites-only spots, as evidenced by the long lines at Le Relais L’Entrecôte that opened earlier this year. However, we still have a soft spot for an old favourite, albeit with a fresh name: CQ Brasserie –formerly Couqley – the Dubai OG. It’s a place that remains close to our hearts. A perfectly sourced steak frites, served with an outrageously delicious buttery sauce, paired with a bottle of wine, is just Dhs349 for two on Mondays. It’s a deal that’s hard to beat. Mövenpick Hotel, Cluster A, JLT, daily noon to 1am. Tel: (0)4 514 9339. @cqbrasserie

Sonara Camp For dining in the desert

ODEON Dubai

For a picnic by the beach

13

You can keep your sunset at the beach, thanks, but for us, the real magic happens in the desert. That’s where the colours pop and the serenity hits a whole new level, especially as the evening chill rolls in and you find yourself pulling your blanket a little tighter. Book a spot at Sonara Desert Camp, where you’ll descend a massive wooden staircase into a crater, all under a canopy of twinkling fairy lights, for an unforgettable BBQ dinner. This stunning location could easily coast by on its views and serve up mediocre food, but the cuisine here is genuinely top-notch. Add in a fire show and a falconry display, and you’ve got a sunset dining experience you’ll never forget.

Why settle for soggy sarnies and a packet of crisps when you can elevate your beach day with a gourmet picnic, all thanks to ODEON? This underrated French restaurant and deli takes the hassle out of preparing a picnic, offering a ready-made hamper filled with indulgent treats. For just Dhs250, you’ll get two made-to-order sandwiches on fresh baguette, tailored to your taste, plus two refreshing juices of your choice. Add to that a pack of Petrossian truffle chips for that extra touch of luxury, a fresh fruit cup, four mini pastries from the patisserie, and a bottle of still water. It’s everything you need to enjoy a perfect, hassle-free picnic by the beach.

ODEON Dubai, Jumeirah 3, daily 8am to 10pm, Tel:(0)4 340 2272. @odeondubai

Sonara Camp, Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, Dhs690 adults, and Dhs280 children (low season), Dhs890 adults and Dhs390 children (high season), Dhs990 adults and Dhs450 children (peak season), drinks sold separately. Tel: (0)50 336 7909. nara.ae 14

Neighbourhood Food Hall For relaxed food hall dining

Neighbourhood Food Hall breezed onto the scene in 2022 in Motor City, bringing well-known names alongside exciting newcomers. While there’s been plenty of changeover over the years, the current lineup includes the Sri Lankan gem Authentic Ceylon, new Oriental Dining serving Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine, the popular burger joint High Joint, the authentic Tacos Los Hermanos, and the breakout hits, chef Akmal’s new pizza spot Pizzeria Funkcolio, and Al Naqa Lao Kebab House, which have taken the city by storm. Neighbourhood Food Hall, Motor City, Sun to Thur noon to 11pm, Fri and Sat noon to midnight. Tel: (0)55 856 9696. @neighbourhoodfoodhalls

Frying Pan Adventures

For authentic food tours

Despite Dubai’s abundance of white-clothed, Michelin-starred dining rooms, many would tout that Old Dubai is the epicentre of food culture in the city. If you want to peel back the shiny skin of Dubai and experience it like the locals do, Frying Pan Adventures is your ticket. Their tours take you off the beaten path to discover alleys, people, foods, and stories that only long-time locals know. You’ll feast on mouthwatering pani puri, crispy falafel, shawarma, and biryanis, all while learning about the migration and community that shaped Dubai’s diverse food scene. With passionate guides sharing tales of the city’s evolution, you’ll leave feeling more connected to the heart and soul of Dubai’s culinary culture. Still the best, still the one and only worth doing. Tours start from Dhs435. fryingpanadventures.com

Kinoya For Japanese-style ramen

Neha Mishra was already a ramen star before opening Kinoya. After a wildly successful run of sold-out supper clubs, she opened her first restaurant in The Greens, and the accolades have kept rolling in. At Kinoya, you can try the shio paintan ramen, made with a rich, creamy chicken broth – the first bowl Mishra ever crafted. Another standout is the spicy duck ramen with smoked duck slices and crispy shallots. The restaurant’s interiors evoke a laid-back Japanese vibe, from the main seating area and private dining rooms to the ramen counter, where lucky guests can watch Mishra work her magic.

Kinoya, The Onyx Tower 2, The Greens, daily noon to 1am (closed Mondays). Tel: (0)4 220 2920. @kinoya.ae

An extravagant buffet featuring pizzas, sushi and noodles and much more, plus live cooking stations grilling a super selection of steaks and seafood, and plenty of fun activities for the little ones, including a petting zoo, face painting, movies, and games. But the highlight? A good old-fashioned Easter egg hunt for all to enjoy.

LOCKED IN AND LOADED…

Last month, Rixos Al Mairid Ras Al Khaimah, hosted the unforgettable What’s On Lock In, and it was nothing short of legendary

We came, we saw, we partied… the What’s On Lock In made its iconic return, and this time, we came back with a bang at the stunning, all-inclusive Rixos Al Mairid Ras Al Khaimah. With indulgent food spreads, endless fun, and just the right amount of relaxation, it was the ultimate staycation experience. Missed it? Don’t worry, we’ve got all the juicy details...

The weekend kicked off in true Lock In style. Guests arrived bright and early at 11am, grabbed their wristbands, and dove straight into the excitement. First stop? A feast at Turquoise, where the buffet was brimming with everything from juicy grills to an overwhelming selection of desserts.

Then, it was time to bask in the sunshine. Some chilled by the pool with cocktails in hand, while others broke a sweat in the hotel’s cycling class or participated in a special women’s circle event. Meanwhile, parents enjoyed some much-needed relaxation, knowing the kids were happily entertained with art, games, and “holiday tattoos” at the kids’ club.

As evening rolled in, we dressed up for a Turkish feast at Orient, where the food was *chef’s kiss*. We all sat under the stars and the live entertainment kept the energy high, and when dinner wrapped up, the party people moved to Arela, the adults-only bar with a DJ spinning the decks ‘till late.

After a restful sleep, we woke up to a breakfast spread that dreams are made of – fluffy omelettes, fresh

fruit, and a bucket load of coffee to recover from the night before. Some ambitious guests joined a beachside CrossFit session, while others opted for a more relaxing aero stretching class. The rest of us? We were back at the pool, soaking up the last few moments of bliss before checking out at noon. All of this? Just Dhs1,150 for a room (for two adults and one child).

The FOMO is real, we get it. But don’t worry –the What’s On Lock In events are back, and there’s plenty more where that came from. Keep an eye on our socials for the next installment… coming soon. @whatsondubai

Bawwaba

Bawwaba (Arabic for “gateway”) is a curated deep dive into solo presentations from artists tackling big themes of displacement, identity, and global transformation. Curated by Mirjam Varadinis (Kunsthaus Zürich), the 2025 edition explores how artists are imagining new ways of living in an increasingly fractured world.

Modern

Modern art, but make it meaningful. Curated by Magalí Arriola (Museo Tamayo, Mexico) and Nada Shabout (University of North Texas, U.S.), this section explores 20th-century artistic movements from the Middle East, North Africa, and other postcolonial regions. Expect powerful conversations on migration, resistance, and cross-cultural influences.

Digital

Art Dubai Digital – curated by Gonzalo Herrero Delicado (Central Saint Martins, London) – dives into how AI, virtual reality, and digital culture are reshaping the art world. From AI-generated works to immersive virtual environments, this is a glimpse into the future of creativity.

THE TALKS: BIG IDEAS, BOLD VOICES

Global Art Forum: The New New Normal

Art Dubai’s flagship conference returns, tackling the wild ride of modern life. Commissioned by Shumon Basar, this year’s edition explores how reality now feels more unpredictable than a scifi movie. Expect insights from a stacked lineup of speakers, including legendary architect Rem Koolhaas, sound artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan, and the internet’s most chaotic brainchild, Postpostpost (aka “the most unhinged meme account out there”).

Collector Talks

Why do people collect art? And what even is ‘impact collecting’? These insider sessions offer a peek into the minds of some of the biggest art collectors around, revealing the quirks, passions, and personal stories behind their acquisitions.

DON’T MISS

Some installations and exhibits demand extra attention. Here’s what you absolutely can’t skip:

1. Ouchhh

No, that’s not a typo. Ouchhh Studio from Istanbul is a pioneer of data paintings, sculptures, and AI-powered public art. )

In this newly commissioned digital installation, Emirati artist Mohammed Kazem places the coordinates of Dubai at the centre of the space, drawing visitors into an immersive microcosm of the city. Surrounded by walls lined with static coordinates set against waves in motion, the piece symbolises Dubai’s borderless flow and interconnectedness.

3. Héctor Zamora

Famed for his site-specific interventions, Mexican artist Héctor Zamora presents a new series of performances and sculptural works, where performers interact with terracotta objects to explore symbolism and ritual. His Art Dubai performances are complemented by a sitespecific installation at Alserkal Avenue, marking the start of a multi-year partnership focused on performance art.

4. Breakfast

New York-based data and kinetic artist Breakfast presents Carbon Wake, a digitally controlled kinetic installation that transforms real-time energy data from global cities into motion and interaction. Energy production from a new city is visualised every minute – showing the immediate impact of energy consumption worldwide.

5. Ania Soliman –Kahrabaa

Taking its name from the Arabic word for ‘electricity,’ Kahrabaa is a site-specific installation exploring the connections between technology, nature, and memory. Created in response to Beirut’s energy crisis, the work features five-metre-high canvases marked by the movement of artificial and real plants, thrown onto the surfaces in a performative act.

6. Piaget x Alyamamah Rashed

Luxury meets art as Piaget returns to Art Dubai with a commission by Kuwaiti surrealist artist Alyamamah Rashed. Her signature dreamlike style is infused with Piaget’s 1960s and 1970s aesthetic, blending jewellery craftsmanship with radical artistic energy.

THE BEAM

Nick Alvis makes a case for returning to Dubai Marina dining

Thanks to Dubai’s ever-increasing traffic, there are a handful of areas I largely chose to avoid during peak hours – Dubai Marina being one of them. So, I’m surprised to find myself heading – albeit glacially – for a 7pm dinner reservation at Le Royal Meridien one midweek evening.

But this is no ordinary dinner reservation. At the helm of newly opened The Beam is Nick Alvis, one of a collective of independent chefs who paved the way for Dubai’s homegrown restaurant scene to flourish in the late twenty-teens. After departing his renowned Madinat Jumeirah restaurant folly in 2022 and spending some time consulting, he’s back on the pots and pans at The Beam. Taking over what homesick Brits will remember as Geales, The Beam is a bistrostyle dining experience set in a corner of the resort’s neatly landscaped grounds. An immaculate garden greets guests, a trickling water fountain provides a pretty

centrepiece, leading to an indoor-outdoor space, bi-folding doors expanding out fully to let one lead into the other. Tables in the garden and on the covered terrace offer lovely views of Ain Dubai, while those seated indoors are enveloped in an unpretentious warmth of neutral interiors and soft lighting.

We make a reservation only a week after opening, and the spacious restaurant is already abuzz with guests. While some are in-house guests, many are here for Alvis, who greets each table with warm hospitality and proudly shows them around the restaurant.

the dedicated section of skillet baked flat breads, we opt for the sun-dried tomato and burrata (Dhs60). The bread is the perfect crispy crust and spongy base, swirls of creamy burrata and crunchy pine nuts add rich flavour and texture.

We go to the fish display for mains and order the seabass (market price). It arrives as a whole fish, and despite being a very generous portion, it’s cooked perfectly and tastes even better when drizzled with a lemon beurre blanc.

The culinary offering is reflective of a European bistro, elevated with a Dubai touch that’s fitting for the city’s competitive culinary scene. As well as the a la carte menu, a fish display is adorned with towers of seafood and locally caught fish on ice, further enhancing the menu.

For starters, we order the venison tartare (Dhs110), which is prettily plated, tender cubes of venison dressed with smoked egg yolk and root ginger. But it’s the flat bread that we dream of long after we’ve finished the final bite. From

The ribeye (Dhs360), a juicy piece of Westholme Australian grass-fed Wagyu, is also excellent. It’s simply seasoned and served alongside a portion of piping hot chunky chips and a roasted rib sauce.

For a sweet ending, the burnt cream (Dhs55), The Beam’s take on a crème brulee, is deliciously velvety, laced with raspberry and topped with a scoop of sorbet to add a light note.

The Beam by Nick Alvis, Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa, Al Mamsha Street, Dubai Marina, Mon to Fri 5pm to 11pm, Sat and Sun 1pm to 11pm.

Kaimana Beach at J1 Beach

Chef Michael Collantes has taken the reins at Kaimana Beach and dropped an exciting new pan-Asian-leaning menu. Think crisp mochiko fried chicken, or the crispy Cantonese turnip cake, golden-fried and served with a punchy XO sauce. But it’s not all pan-Asian. He’s thrown in some old seaside favourites, too. Who could say no to the gambas al ajillo skillet with sourdough ciabatta? Certainly not us.

GIRL & THE GOOSE – RESTAURANTE CENTROAMERICANO

From a humble living room supper club to a sprawling tribute to Central America

“Welcome home,” says Chef Gabriela Chamorro, her smile bright. She offers tight, uninhibited hugs, her excitement to serve palpable.

We stand inside Girl & the Goose –Restaurante Centroamericano, her lifelong dream, a whispered prayer finally realised. The venue opened last month and is already packed. The full tables, the low hum of conversation, and the simmering music fill us with joy – we were with her back in 2019 when this was just one dining table in her home.

Her new restaurant reflects and celebrates her rich cultural heritage and regional influences. The entrance, with its terracotta doorstep, Spanish and Mesoamerican colonial awning, and door frame, sets the tone immediately.

“At the supper club, it was all about making people feel at home,” says Gabi, walking us through the space. “I wanted to bring that back – a cosy place that reminds me of the humble houses I grew up in.”

“Girl & the Goose is a modern take on Central American food,” Gabi explains. “I take timeless traditional recipes from our region and pair them with inspirations from my travels for something new and special.”

Starters include the flautas de pato (Dhs81) and nacatamal de pollo (Dhs61). The crispy flautas, filled with shredded duck confit and salsa negra, deliver a satisfying crunch, smoky richness, and a tart, sweet, and spicy sauce reminiscent of tamarind. The nacatamal, a traditional dish of masa corn dough filled with chicken, olives, rice, and dates, is slowcooked in a banana leaf, warm and subtly flavored with the familiar density of corn.

The goat cheese and caramelised onion pastelitos (Dhs53), chewy Nicaraguan empanadas, balance a hint of sweetness with the saltiness of the cheese. The falta de ternera asada (Dhs83), Costa Rican tacos, feature insanely flavourful grilled steak, infused with smoky-sweet slow-cooked notes, chimichurri’s herbal brightness, and a spicy gochujang chili mayo.

For mains, the lemongrass Omani cod (Dhs137) stands out. The fish is bathed in a lemon-ginger-heat trifecta of lemongrass chilli oil, with a floral sweetness from the corn espuma foam. Light and delicate, it contrasts beautifully with the heavier, saltier entrées.

Inside, that feeling deepens with the open kitchen, where diners can watch her prepare dishes and interact with her, echoing her supper club evenings. Rust-red furniture, a veranda-style balcony, traditional arches, rattan touches, and artefacts complete the nostalgic atmosphere.

With a spring in her step, she leads us to the private dining room, where the origins of her journey remain – the communal dining table and the iconic artwork that once adorned her home, the backdrop of countless supper club group photos.

“It’s been humbling,” she says. “Dubai has so many restaurants, yet people still choose to spend an evening with us. That’s powerful. This painting represents resilience, change, and the remarkable power of community.”

At the meal’s end, we’re handed whimsical cards depicting inviting desserts. We choose the fiesta cake, a bomb of bitter chocolate served with crispy fried plantains, and the horchata tres leches – milky, sweet, deeply comforting, with cinnamon and lemon curd.

Though transformed, the food never strays far from its Mesoamerican roots, bringing a cuisine rarely explored in Dubai.

Girl & the Goose – Restaurante Centroamericano, Anantara Downtown, daily 12pm to 1am.

Tel: (0) 52 772 9888. @girl.and.the.goose

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Gabi’s place remains a celebration of storytelling, community, and the tradition of shared meals – at the heart of Central American hospitality.

REVIEW:

TANG DUBAI DOWNTOWN

Is there soul behind the splendour..?

Pretty privilege is a real thing. And if you don’t believe that, it’s probably because you’re blessed with the sort of beauty that means you don’t have to. Going through life on easy mode can be a curse as much as a blessing though – you probably won’t have to try as hard as everyone else. And so, fulfilment will likely be harder to find.

The same can be true for restaurants. Eateries plonked slap-bangopposite tourist traps don’t have to beguile you with the depth of their menu, they know they’ll still win on passing trade and mortgage instalment-priced bowls of mediocre pasta. But are their head chefs and helmsmen truly fulfilled?

Tang Dubai Downtown – not to be confused with Asia Tang, Tang Town, Tang Dubai (the bubble tea place) or even Tang the refreshing powdered beverage concentrate – could, should it so wish, eke out a very handsome living on its looks and location alone. The Asian restaurant (named after the ‘golden age’ Chinese dynasty) is a purebred fizzog-turner, sat on the Dubai-Fountain-facing waterfront of Palace Downtown – and it has pointblank, fish-eyed views of the Burj Khalifa.

It’s a Nicky van der Walt concept, imported from South Africa, with a menu

inspired by the izakayas of Osaka and the flame-lit kitchens of old Canton. It opened on New Year’s Eve 2024/25 and whilst it was on my radar, I had put off visiting it, because I’d subconsciously stuffed it into the ‘just another gorgeous-but-dull Asian restaurant’ pigeon-hole.

Big mistake. Huge. It might be a pretty venue, but its true and enduring beauty is found in its culinary core. The menu is largely an accumulated offering of both Japanese and Cantonese dishes (and a few nods to soft fusion), with a sublime range of small plates that secures Tang Dubai Downtown a spot in Dubai date night greatness. We try the yellowtail jalapeño sashimi (Dhs118), which comes with an exquisitely balanced ponzu. A curtain opening that leaves no doubt what ‘assumption’ has made of me.

The lobster tacos (Dhs98) and Wagyu gyoza (Dhs95) carry, again, merit badges for exceptional produce and a gastronomic savant’s understanding of sauce. Don’t skip the greens. The baby spinach salad (Dhs88) contains scattered nano croutons of dried miso that lock palate-top sabres with the fruity citrus barbs of yuzu dressing. It’s like watching a

magic trick, knowing how it works, and still being left in slack-jawed awe.

Before the next course leaves the binchōtan charcoal grill, I sneak off for a nose around the restaurant. Wherever you sit outside you get grandstand views of the BK and its backup dancing fountains. Inside it’s chic, sleek, and revelling in on-trend Manhattan glam. Looks, food, views, service, there are no cracks. Tang really is the full package.

At this point, it’s almost moot, but it’s important to state for the record, that the Wagyu tenderloin (Dhs260) is obnoxiously good, dressed to the nines with imperial sauceware. The black cod miso (Dhs245), is also an embarrassment of cuisine richness, buttery and flaky, just incredibly good food. We finish with the ‘special occasion platter’ (Dhs185), because there is no better way to celebrate the unravelling of misplaced bias than with a selection of seasonal fruit, sorbets and a sort of coconut congee brulee. Tang, Palace Downtown, Downtown Dubai, daily 12pm to 1am. Tel: (0)55 663 3071.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard the phrase ‘the new Zuma’. It’s never correct, but Tang comes tantalisingly close.

DISCO DREAMS AND COFFEE BEANS

Coffee shop DJ sets are Dubai’s hottest trend. What’s On reporter Manaal Fatimah meets the pioneers behind the city’s new movement

It throws me off to discover that the man behind Fred’s Coffee Party is, quite literally, just one man. A postgrad student with a grinning, twinkling face of a boy. Fred, as it turns out, isn’t Fred at all – he’s Shivam Grover, and he organises coffee shop raves for fun.

“I didn’t want to be a corporate slave,” he says with a laugh and a shake of his head.

Fred’s Coffee Party is exactly what it sounds like – a three-word blueprint for a new wave of club culture bubbling up in hidden pockets of Dubai. A city known for pulsating dance floors, unlimited drinks, and, for some, a rinse-andrepeat weekend routine of partying hard and nursing brutal hangovers is now welcoming a fresh alternative.

Words: Manaal Fatimah

Amid this disco-ball haze, coffee shop raves are emerging: sober parties where the currency of the night is a cup of artisanal Joe. Shannon Soans, a music promoter and the force behind Off The Record, one of Dubai’s hottest weekend parties, is raising a glass (of Spanish latte?) to that, with No Filter, Off The Record’s caffeinated cousin.

“We do the conventional Saturday nights at different clubs in Dubai, but we also wanted to tap into the market of those who don’t drink but love this kind of music,” Shannon explains. “Beeking (Shannon’s partner) introduced me to Mohamed Ali Al Madfai, co-founder of Emirati Coffee. He had a background in coffee, and we thought it would be a perfect fit.”

Behind the scenes, No Filter is a three-man show: Shannon, Beeking, and Mohamed, whose coffee shop takes its beans seriously – from plant to pour. Together, they’re redefining Dubai’s party scene. Coffee shop raves are nothing new; they’ve flourished in Europe as hubs of cool, culture, and sobriety. But in this part of the world, the concept is fresh, inviting, and quickly gaining fans.

The formula is simple: a visually aesthetic location, a high-energy DJ spinning house music, and, of course, great coffee. The result? A space for a new kind of partygoer – young, fun, mostly Gen Z, health-conscious, and perpetually sober

– who just wants to dance without dodging party zombies and the baggage of booze.

“When I came to Dubai, I saw so many people into wellness, way more than back in India. Gyms are packed, and people prioritise health. The number of sober people here is far higher than anywhere else in the world,” notes Shivam.

“What I love is the positivity,” Shannon adds. “People are drawn to the literal and metaphorical lightness of it all. We recently had a Costa Coffee collab, and people brought their dogs and kids. It’s just a cool new way to enjoy this music.”

Shivam operates solo, partnering with trendy cafes (including, recently, Dubai Airport). His events are intimate, with exclusive invites sliding into DMs. Meanwhile, Shannon, Beeking, and Mohamed deck out venues with rented sound systems and serve cold brews in beer glasses.

“If you see videos from our Costa event, the staff was part of the party,” Shannon recalls. “At one point, Soulja Boy played, and suddenly, 10 or 15 people started doing the Soulja Boy dance. The whole coffee shop was moving in waves. I was like, wow, this doesn’t even happen at Off The Record, but it’s happening at coffee parties.”

“Even I thought people would just be chatting and vibing,” Shivam adds. “Without alcohol, I expected less energy. But after the first event? People went mad. The energy was higher than in a club. People were dancing, jumping, and others were just talking and networking.”

Coffee raves have the makings of a cultural and social shift, fueled by social media and the growing appeal of sobriety. A decade ago, this scene might not have thrived, but today, it’s a perfect storm of digital connection, trendiness, and a shift in lifestyle priorities.

And here we are. And we like it.

Both Fred’s and No Filter have big plans to keep the momentum going with new locations, formats, music genres, and drinks. But expansion? Not necessarily. The magic lies in its insider appeal. For now, they’re downing espresso shots, reveling in the club-like steam of coffee machines, and being really, really cool.

BAR OF THE MONTH:

A true classic –Prohibition-era New York vibes, high above the city

Perched on the 52nd floor of ICD Brookfield Place, this sultry drinking den is the latest from D.ream, the global group behind Amazónico, COYA, and Zuma. Step through a red velvet curtain into a space dripping with Golden Age glamour – an Art Deco dream inspired by Manhattan’s

iconic skyscrapers. The bar is pure decadence, crowned by a striking Italian modernist mural that stretches across the counter. Sink into a plush red-velvet booth for that speakeasy allure or grab a table with sweeping city views and front row seat to the live band.

DRINKS

The printed menus boast expertly crafted cocktails (both boozy and zero-proof), plus a solid lineup of wines and beers. But it’s the cocktails that steal the show. The Plume is a knockout: Casamigos Blanco Tequila, lemon, grapefruit juice, and coconut – an indulgent nod to the Charleston craze of the 1920s. For something bold, try the Bicicletta –

Meydan gets a McGettigan’s

Aperitivo Select, aromatic wine, kumquat, olives, and tonic. And if you’re after a classic, just hit up the bartender – they know their craft well.

FOOD

The bar bites are just as fun. Don’t skip the truffle croque monsieur – a luxe take on the classic. Meanwhile the Alaskan king crab tartlets, with zesty tahini-lemon mayo, are another must. 1920, ICD Brookfield Place, daily 5.30pm to 3am. Tel: (0)4 498 1920. @1920dubai

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

A slick hideaway near DIFC – far from the banker crowd, perfect for slipping into the shadows.

The latest bar to open in Dubai is an old favourite in an exciting new destination. Hospitality giants McGettigan’s and Addmind have joined forces to launch McGettigan’s at Iris, a brand-new outdoor destination that brings old fashioned Irish craic to the heart of Meydan Grandstand. That means a new home to drink, watch sports, and listen to live music. The Sunday roast and happiest of happy hours don’t hurt either. SOCKS APPEAL

Meet Aussie Goddess Freyja Rampe, founder of KRUMP – the new “it” fitness accessory brand that’s taken the UAE by storm

Firstly, what’s with the name? [Laughs] KRUMP is named after my cats, Kitty and Crumpet. Every time I rolled out my mat, they’d stretch out with me – so they became part of the brand!

Tell us about the inspiration for starting your brand?

I started KRUMP because I was frustrated with poor-quality accessories that didn’t last. Grip socks weren’t grippy, bands snapped, ankle weights rubbed. I wanted to create products that were stylish yet durable – grips that actually grip, bands that don’t slip, and ankle weights that feel as good as they look.

How does KRUMP stand out in the wellness market?

We fuse aesthetics with function while prioritising sustainability. Our accessories use recycled materials wherever possible, even in packaging. With over 10 years in the industry, I design each piece meticulously, ensuring they’re both stylish and high-performing.

What goes into creating the perfect Pilates accessory?

It all starts with the feel – if it’s uncomfortable, you won’t use it. We tested countless samples to perfect our mats’ grip, ankle weights’ fit, and resistance bands’ balance of stretch and strength. Every KRUMP piece is refined until it meets our high standards.

What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?

Building KRUMP has been an adventure! Sourcing quality materials, managing suppliers, and handling

marketing were all learning curves. We refused to cut corners, especially with sustainability. Research, patience, and trusting experts helped us navigate obstacles. We’ve embraced each and every challenge, been honest about what we can and can’t do – and lent our trust in experts when needed. It’s ok to admit you can’t do everything – and we’ve learned there is always a solution, no matter what.

The Pilates community in the UAE is growing fast. What are your favourite studios? I have to be biased and mention a couple of studios I work at! In Dubai, Cima (JVC) stands out for its stunning space and diverse class offerings, while Revive (JGE) is known for its intense, results-driven workouts led by exceptional trainers. Over in Abu Dhabi, Al Bateen Ladies Club by Matcha offers the ultimate Pilates experience with a gorgeous beachfront setting, and Bodytree is a go-to for expert instruction and mindful movement.

What’s next for KRUMP? Any exciting launches on the horizon?

Yes! We’re working on collaborations that blend movement and nutrition in fresh ways. Plus, we have new products coming to level up your Pilates game. Stay tuned…

THE ACCIDENTAL ICON

Celeste Barber, the Australian Queen of Comedy takes centre stage in Dubai this month

For years, Celeste Barber has been the internet’s go-to comedic relief, poking fun at the absurdity of celebrity culture and Instagram perfection. Now, the Australian comedian, actor, and social media sensation is taking her humour from the screen to the stage, bringing her latest comedy tour, Backup Dancer, to Dubai. With millions of followers, a best-selling book, and a Netflix series under her belt, Barber’s ascent from online parody queen to global star is nothing short of spectacular.

Barber’s journey to stardom didn’t begin with a calculated plan to disrupt social media norms. A trained actress, she spent years working in Australian television on shows, but it was her unfiltered take on the curated world of celebrity that catapulted her into the limelight. What started as a casual experiment – recreating highfashion photos and videos with hilarious, self-deprecating honesty – quickly became an internet phenomenon.

With posts mimicking everyone from the Kardashians to Victoria’s Secret models, Barber highlighted the ridiculousness of unattainable beauty standards, striking a chord with audiences worldwide. Her Instagram following skyrocketed, now standing at over nine million, and her comedy became more of a movement than pure entertainment.

Barber’s success online led to a wealth of opportunities beyond social media. In 2019, she released her book, Challenge Accepted!, a witty and empowering take

WHAT

on life, motherhood, and body positivity. Around the same time, she embarked on her first stand-up tour, proving she could bring her signature humour to live audiences just as effortlessly as she did in short-form videos.

Then came Wellmania, a Netflix comedy-drama inspired by journalist Brigid Delaney’s book about the wellness industry. Barber played the lead, further cementing her ability to transition from comedic sketches to fully-fledged acting roles. The show, much like Barber herself, took a cheeky, irreverent approach to modern wellness obsessions and resonated with audiences worldwide.

Now, Barber is taking centre stage –

STARTED AS A CASUAL EXPERIMENT, QUICKLY BECAME AN INTERNET PHENOMENON

literally. Her Backup Dancer tour, making its way to Dubai Opera, is a tongue-incheek nod to the fact that, despite being an international star, she often finds herself playing second fiddle in the world of traditional entertainment. But as Barber has proven time and time again, she’s no one’s backup.

Her stand-up blends observational humour, personal anecdotes, and sharp social commentary. Whether she’s discussing parenting mishaps, the ridiculousness of influencer culture, or the bizarre world of Hollywood, Barber’s comedy is both relatable and riotous. And in a city like Dubai, where luxury and Instagram-worthy lifestyles reign supreme, her self-aware, no-holds-barred humor is sure to strike a chord.

Celeste barber, Dubai Opera, Downtown Dubai, 7pm, from Dhs250. Tel: (0)4 440 8888. dubai.platinumlist.net

She said what?

On celebrity fitness: “Of course you have abs, Jennifer. You have a chef.”

On body confidence: “The key to looking good in a swimsuit? Own it. Or stand next to someone really awkward.”

On social media culture: “I love it when influencers say, ‘Just be yourself!’ while using a filter that makes them look like a unicorn.”

On self-care: “Nothing says ‘treat yourself’ like eating an entire block of chocolate and then regretting everything.”

On parenthood: “I thought I had my life together, and then I had kids. Now I just hope my clothes aren’t inside out.”

OPENING APRIL 18

MULTI-SENSORY OVERLOAD

Step inside the living universe of teamLab

Phenomena Abu Dhabi

Opening its doors on April 18, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi invites visitors into a world where art breathes, light dances, and space pulses with life. An exhibition far beyond the ordinary, teamLab is a realm of evershifting forms, where technology and nature blur into a fluid, living ecosystem.

Within its vast 17,000 sqm expanse, visitors step into spaces where light and sound ripple in response to your presence. Dots of light flicker and synchronise in an autonomous ballet, responding to the touch of a hand before dissolving again

into randomness. Butterflies emerge at your fingertips, vanishing into the air as delicately as they arrived.

Wade through a water garden alive with glowing egg-shaped orbs, each one illuminating and singing as it is nudged creating an echoing wave of colour and tone moving outward in perfect harmony. In another space, a universe unfolds in swirling vortexes and currents, where movement itself sketches shifting lines in space, tracing unseen forces at work.

As you walk, touch, and explore, the artworks evolve in real time, an everchanging dance of light, water, and organic motion. Each moment is completely unique – never to be repeated.

A pathway of 13 connected exhibitions

teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi is a vast interconnected journey, leading visitors through 13 immersive multisensory exhibitions. Among them are two groundbreaking installations…

Massless Suns and Dark Suns

Radiant spheres of light appear as tangible yet weightless, igniting in glowing waves when touched. Alongside them, mysterious dark spheres emerge, as though darkness itself has taken form. These elements only exist in perception, dissolving and reforming in an endless cycle.

Levitation Void

A structure that defies gravity, suspended in a delicate balance between movement and stillness. Push it, and it may drift or fall, yet it instinctively rises again, as though drawn back to a state of perfect levitation.

A vision for the future

HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, describes teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi as “a space that redefines what is possible, forging deeper connections between art, technology, and nature to inspire new generations of innovators and thinkers.” He highlights how Saadiyat Cultural District is a testament to Abu Dhabi’s vision of blending heritage with a forward-thinking approach to cultural exchange.

Meanwhile, Toshiyuki Inoko, Founder of teamLab, explains the deeper philosophy behind the experience: “The artworks do not exist independently but are created by the environment itself. Unlike static objects, they emerge and transform through air, water, and light – reminding us that existence itself is intertwined with its surroundings.”

teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Cultural District, Abu Dhabi, daily 10am to 7pm, from April 18, Dhs150 adults, Dhs115 teenagers, Dhs50 children. teamlababudhabi.com

Arabian Essence at Raffles Spa

A spa experience worth sleeping through

Aspa day is always a treat, but when the experience is so relaxing it sends you straight to sleep, you know you’ve made the right choice. That was exactly our experience at Raffles Spa in Wafi.

Like many spas in Dubai, the facilities are gender-segregated. While this may not suit everyone, it offers a serene and uninterrupted escape for those seeking some quality “me time.”

The relaxation areas feature the usual amenities – a jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room – all designed to provide a calming atmosphere, in keeping with Raffles Dubai’s elegant style.

Our journey began with a soothing soak in the jacuzzi, followed by some time in the sauna. Afterwards, we were guided to the treatment room for the Essence of Arabia, a signature 90-minute treatment that combines a full-body massage with sound healing.

What truly sets Raffles Spa apart is the therapist’s genuine attentiveness. Often, spa treatments can feel routine, with therapists simply following a standard protocol. However, at Raffles, our therapist took the time at the start of the session to understand our preferences, creating a completely customised experience. From adjusting pressure levels to identifying areas to focus on or avoid, every detail was carefully tailored. Even the oil was selected specifically in advance, based on our preferences.

As the treatment unfolded, stress melted away with the help of the soothing sounds of singing bowls and sound vibrations gently drumming through the body. It’s no surprise that sleep became nearly inevitable.

Findpeopleyour

The UAE’s best hobby and interest clubs

In a country with a rapidly growing population, why is it so easy to feel lonely? Busy lifestyles, smartphones and social media have got a lot to answer for. So, we have been on a quest to find the most welcoming hobby and interest clubs where you can hang out with others and get your mind and body moving.

The good news is there is a lot of choice out there. But what sets these clubs apart is their founders. These are a group of passionate people who have set out to create something for the community, for no other reason than to give people a chance to connect in an increasingly disconnected world.

Words: Sarah Hewitt

JUMEIRAH JOHNS RUNNING CLUB

What started as a couple of friends meeting for a pre-work walk or run on the beach has evolved into an extremely active run club with activities taking place nearly every day of the week. What we love about Jumeirah Johns is that it focuses on the social side of running. All ages and abilities are welcome, the classes are free and they have got some lovely collaborations happening with big brands. With a huge following on Instagram, the two young founders have tapped into something all of us really need - the chance to move our bodies, feel connected to others and go at our own pace.

@jumeirahjohnsrunningclub

Angus Maxfield & Ryan Underwood

Five minutes with the co-founders of Jumeirah Johns Running Club

Tell us the story of Jumeirah Johns...

Jumeirah Johns started out of necessity. Ryan and I were into running but couldn’t find any fun, social run clubs in Dubai — just paid ones or groups without much of a vibe. So, along with Nathan Evans, a school friend who now handles our creative work, we decided to start our own. It turned out many people were looking for the same thing: a laid-back, friendly community outside of the usual Dubai scenes. It’s been special to build this together, especially since Ryan and I have been best mates since secondary school.

What makes Jumeirah Johns a social club, and do you have plans to expand?

At its core, Jumeirah Johns is a social run club. We always end each session with a social hangout, whether it’s coffee, drinks, or just a catch-up. It’s awesome seeing elite athletes and beginners chat without any ego. We’ve even planned trips like our recent ski trip to Georgia. Right now, we’re focused on Dubai, but who knows what the future holds for other emirates!

Can you share any great connections made through the club?

One amazing story is a couple who moved to Dubai, joined a run the day they arrived, and ended up meeting their closest friends there. The club has really helped people grow more confident and connect outside the usual Dubai scene. It’s been amazing seeing people

come out of their shells and form real friendships.

What happens during the summer months?

We don’t stop in the summer! While we might cut back on sessions, we still meet weekly and keep the socials going. Expect the same Jumeirah Johns vibe, plus some special collaborations and events to keep things fresh and fun.

BIKEERA

The first rule of Bikeera bike club is, bring your friends to bike club. Free morning group ride sessions take place throughout the week with a Monday E-Bike ride departing from the Bikeera Café at Kite Beach; a 30km route on Tuesdays in collaboration with Jumeirah Johns Running Club; and a 40km ‘humpday’ pedal around the roads of Nad Al Sheba. Weekend warriors can choose from a chilled 50km spin at Al Qudra and a two-wheeled traversing of the wilds of Mushrif Trail Park. There are sessions for all ability levels, a free recovery zone with ice baths, massage guns and rollers, and a welcoming embrace for all newcomers. Get your helmet on, we ride at dawn. @bikeera.mobility

THE NADI

Where are all our retirees at?

The Nadi, a multi-generational social club, was set up in early 2024 by Shaden Abdellatif and Joanne Kubba who were inspired by all the parents and grandparents who are staying in the UAE for longer. But you don’t have to be a senior member of society to enjoy

The Nadi – all activities are accessible for all ages. Recent one-off events have included a bingo night, a hike in Ras Al Khaimah and Tai Chi on the beach. Weekly staples include a social pickleball game on Tuesday, and mobility mornings at Joint Space on Friday. @thenadiclub

HOW ABOUT

Anna Cartwright started ‘How About’ in 2022 to help people in Dubai connect, make friends and experience new things. With 10 events a month ranging from hikes to mindfulness sessions, creative workshops, padel and business networking, the thriving community offers a membership scheme or you can just pay as you go per event. One of the most popular events are the ‘matched’ breakfasts and dinners where the club admins match people together on the tables based on their interests. Look out for events coming to Abu Dhabi in April/May 2025.

Fitness craze Hyrox takes over Sharjah this month

UPHILL BATTLES

Reach new heights at the H Dubai Vertical Run

A skyscraper may be an unusual location for a race but that hasn’t stopped H Dubai, which is organising a race up its stairs on April 20. The premise is simple – run/ walk/stagger up all floors as fast as possible. It may not be everyone’s idea of fun but for mountain runners, ultra runners and for those running hobbyists who are looking for a running challenge it’s another test of athletic capability. How many floors exactly? Well, that would be telling, but it’s probably a lot more than you’re used to.

H Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road, 8am, April 20, Dhs105. premieronline. come

If Hyrox rings a bell, it’s likely because the fit folk in your gym won’t stop going on about it. Featuring 8K of running split up by eight mini-workouts, it’s the hottest new must-do event for people who love the gym and the ’Gram. Now, the German fitness-racing phenomenon is headed to Sharjah on April 12. Competitors will tackle eight movement stations, each separated by a one-kilometre run, creating a fierce mix of CrossFit, running, and an urban obstacle race. Expect a blend of cardio (SkiErgs, rowers), strength (sled pushes, farmer’s carries), and punishing endurance (sandbag lunges, burpee broad jumps). It’s designed for all fitness levels – but don’t be fooled, it’s incredibly tough. The average finishing time? 90 minutes. Not trained? Sit this one out, cheer on the athletes, and consider signing up for the next one.

TRAVEL // INTO THE WILD

With the Eid break a distant memory and the long slog of summer nearing, you might already be in need of a weekend getaway. And if the hassle of airport queues, plane food, and screaming children that don’t belong to you feels too overwhelming, then Sir Bani Yas Island could be just the ticket.

Hop in the car and head west towards Jebel Dhanna and the ferry port –three hours from Dubai or two and a half from Abu Dhabi. From there, your holiday relaxation begins the moment you step onto the boat. Let the gentle sway of the 30-minute sail set the tone for a tranquil retreat on this stunning island sanctuary.

OUT OF THE CITY… AND INTO Africa

Experience the sights and sounds of the savannah without leaving the UAE, as What’s On’s Madie Murphy discovers

INTO THE WILD

Around 11,000 animals share the 87sqkm island, including cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, oryx, and gazelles. The proximity of the animals is startling – gazelles skip up to the back doors of guests’ villas and the main resort buildings. Don’t worry, though; there’s no chance of finding a cheetah in your bedroom as larger creatures are kept behind fences. But as you sit in an open-roof 4x4 on a guided tour, you just might spot them stealthily blending into the savannah grass, or see giraffes towering above the trees from just a few metres away.

Drive around the corner, and you’ll find zebras roaming freely. But the real magic is in the smaller moments – watching gazelles and oryx bound effortlessly across the terrain, a reminder of the island’s commitment to conservation and wildlife preservation. Our guide was an expert in all things Sir Bani Yas, making the journey even more fascinating as we learned about the different species and the island’s dedicated conservation efforts.

A wildlife tour lasts about 90 minutes (Dhs350 for adults, Dhs190 for children) and is the absolute highlight of the activities on the island.

WHERE TO STAY

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort

While the name may be a mouthful, the resort itself has not bitten off more than it can chew. There are 30 private villas, each with its own pool, and every single one boasts uninterrupted beach views that stretch straight out to the ocean. There’s something so tropical about this place – you could easily believe you were in the Seychelles or the Maldives.

That evening, we dined at Olio Restaurant, an Italian gem that left us dreaming about the mozzarella-filled rice clouds. This resort is the epitome of beachside relaxation, recently refurbished into the dream escape it is today. Rates start from Dhs1,550 per night.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Beyond wildlife tours, guests can try a whole host of activities ranging from horse riding and mountain biking, to stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, and kayaking. For a more leisurely experience, the history and cultural tours (Dhs395 adults, Dhs195 children), stop at some of the island’s impressive archaeological sites, including an excavation site of a Nestorian Christian monastery, believed to date back to 600 AD.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort

For an equally impressive – yet entirely different – experience, the Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort offers a slice of Africa in the UAE. Like its sister property, it boasts 30 villas with private pools, but this time, the aesthetic is pure safari chic.

One of our favourite moments? Taking a dip in the pool while gazelles, peacocks, and other wildlife gracefully wandered past our accommodation. The African charm extends to the dining areas, too, and we enjoyed a meat-centric feast at The Savannah Grill. Stays at this stylish safari retreat start from Dhs1,650 per night.

These beautiful hidden gems in the Middle East defy expectations

Looking at the images across these pages and you’d be forgiven for thinking they were in far flung destinations. But, believe it or not, some of the most stunning locations on the planet are right here in the region. Here are seven extraordinary spots in the Middle East that will make you believe paradise is just around the corner

Asir Mountains

Where: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s reputation as a tourist destination is growing. In particular, places like Al-Ula are really putting KSA on the map. But there’s more to discover in the Kingdom. Located about 700km south of Al-Ula is Asir Mountains, an hidden paradise. Abundant with natural beauty, rich culture and historical significance, it’s home to green valleys, towering peaks and ancient villages. Here, travellers will truly feel they are on one of the best off-the-beaten track destinations. Nature lovers will easily feel at home, and will love exploring its picturesque landscapes, parks and villages. You can take a cable car up Jabal Sawda (black mountains in Arabic) – the highest peak in Saudi approximately 3,000m above sea level. Your reward? Fluffy clouds, cooler temperatures, and plenty of greenery.

Asir Mountains

Wadi Dana

Where: Jordan

Images of Wadi Dana will instantly draw comparisons to Petra (the more famous rocky landscape in Jordan) and even the Grand Canyon in the USA. Wadi Dana exudes dramatic cliffs and natural redstained (thanks to the presence of iron oxide or rust) rock formation and rich wildlife and one thing is certain, nature lovers will love the quiet and immersive experience with nature. Located in Dana Biosphere Reserve, the largest nature reserve in Jordan, you can enjoy incredible hiking trails, valley views and learn about the Bedouin culture. Spend the night to truly experience Jordanian village life.

Salalah

Where: Oman

No, we didn’t mess up our image search. What you’re looking at isn’t Kerala, India, or Sri Lanka’s Bambarakanda waterfall. It’s Salalah, Oman – a verdant oasis, yet often overshadowed by more well-known destinations. For those in the know, it’s a hidden gem where serene views, cascading waterfalls, and natural swimming pools await. Come monsoon season, the landscape transforms into a mist-covered paradise, a striking contrast to the desert scenery many associate with the region. Take the time to also explore the aweinspiring Tawi Attair Sinkhole, almost 700 feet deep. Salalah may be off the beaten path, but once you’re here, it’s clear this place is anything but ordinary.

Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea)

Where: Qatar

Visit Qatar deems the Inland Sea one of the rarest places on earth. A space where two landscapes, golden desert dunes and blue coastal waters meet together in harmony. Unlike the beach, Khor Al Adaid shows off towering desert dunes next to clear, shallow waters. Not only is it unique, it is recognised by UNESCO as a natural reserve, which highlights its rarity and importance. It has a rich biodiversity, migratory birds, marine life, and desert fauna. Wanderers can experience this unspoiled visual masterpiece in peaceful isolation.

EVEN CLOSE TO HOME

Three UAE spots that teleport you abroad

Sir Bani Yas Island

As you’ve read on the previous pages, step onto Sir Bani Yas Island, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the Serengeti. This Abu Dhabi island is home to an African-style wildlife reserve, where safari tours let you experience giraffes, gazelles, and hyenas in their natural habitat. A true haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Hatta

While UAE residents know it well, this hidden gem surprises many. With rugged mountains and serene landscapes, it’s a natural escape few expect to find in the UAE. Visitors can hike, mountain bike, or kayak through this stunning terrain.

Anantara Mina Al Arab

Ras Al Khaimah Resort

Your Maldives-esque snaps with turquoise waters will have your friends fooled – until they learn it’s just an hour away from Dubai. This luxurious escape offers overwater villas, pristine beaches, and natural beauty, all without the need to fly.

An all-inclusive family-friendly resort that’s actually a breath of fresh air

Goodbye, beastly buffet lines. Hello friendly service, adults-only areas, and superb sundowner spots. Making a case for the all-inclusive staycay at Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island

In recent years, the UAE has seen a flurry of all-inclusive family-friendly resorts. WHY I LOVED RIXOS

This month’s mini What’s On reporter, nine-year-old Polly Kirwan, reports live from her stay…

On F&B: “You are spoiled for choice from terrific teppanyaki to a bar in the pool. Orient, the Turkish restaurant offers lovely lamb chops and mouth watering kebabs. The juice bar next to the gym serves a variety of smoothies all tropical, delicious and fresh.”

On activities: “The pool is an exquisite place to be: it has amazing aqua cycling, incredible swimming facilities and people on rollerblades serve you your drinks and nibbles! The beach, which is very close by, leads to a crystal-clear sea with turtles and dolphins.”

On other fun stuff: “The hotel feels like a playground for kids. Well, most places have adults’ only areas but to make this equally enjoyable for us there is an amazing kids club and a brilliant mini water park and wave pool. In the evenings there’s all sorts of entertainment, too. My sisters and I loved the amazing dancers that have fruit balancing on their heads.”

Polly’s Verdict

All in all this place is brilliant – I can’t wait to come back.

Experience an unforgettable family-friendly staycation that offers luxurious amenities, exceptional dining options, and personalized moments of relaxation designed just for you. Conveniently located next to the iconic Mall of the Emirates, this 5-star luxury hotel invites guests to indulge in unmatched comfort and elegance.
