SC State unveils telehealth hub with free care for campus and community
South Carolina State University has launched the Bulldog Health & Wellness Hub, anchored by the OnMed CareStation—a high-tech telehealth kiosk that provides free medical services to students, employees and the surrounding community, regardless of insurance or income level.
The CareStation allows users to consult with licensed clinicians via secure video and includes diagnostic tools such as a stethoscope, scale, blood pressure cuff and high-resolution camera. Clinicians can assess vitals, provide diagnoses and issue e-prescriptions when appropriate. The unit selfsanitizes between uses.
Located in the former Moss Hall Annex on Pinckney Street, the facility was funded through a $1 million USDA Distance and Telemedicine Grant and a $500,000 award from the HBCU Health Discovery Program. It also offers assistance with Medicaid, Medicare and SNAP applications, along with health education and wellness support.
The hub is operated by SC State’s Health Education Research and Training Center, led by Dr. Ashley Evans Knowell and Dr. Audrey McCrary-Quarles.
