EDITOR’S LETTER

Hello Mum!

September always feels like a sudden reset to me. The slow days of summer break are behind us and early alarms are back! If the school run is more like a sprint right now, our article on page 26 is for you. It’s full of smart little tweaks that help take the pressure off the start of your family’s day and I hope it’ll help ease you back into the rhythm of term time with confidence.

School lunches are another September challenge! With that in mind, we’ve carried a piece on page 19 packed with realistic, creative lunch box ideas that balance nutrition with flavours kids actually enjoy. Think fuss-free wraps, colourful snack boxes and easy wins that won’t have you dreading the lunchbox prep.

On the topic of food and health, our feature on page 13 focuses on boosting kids’ immunity for the new school term. With the return of playground sniffles, these practical, simple ideas should keep little immune systems strong - from superfoods to the vitamins worth considering if your child is slightly run-down.

Of course, it’s not just little ones who need looking after. If you’re feeling like you haven’t had a moment to yourself, turn to page 16, where we delve into ten quick reset rituals parents can do in just a few minutes. These are deliberately small and accessible - no complicated routines, just quick resets that leave you calmer, more connected to yourself and more able.

And speaking of connection, we explore the magic of the three-word phrase, “I believe you” on page 30. A simple sentence that should be part of everyone’s parenting toolkit, we look at how those three little words can shape a child’s confidence and trust, and how you can weave them into your everyday conversations in a way that really makes a difference!

These days screens are never far from the conversation. We’re talking tech on page 33, where we’ve rounded up the best educational apps and digital tools for kids of all ages - options that feed children’s creativity and curiosity without any guilt. It’s a reminder that technology, when used intentionally, can support learning and be a really positive tool for young minds.

Over on page 49, you’ll find my beauty picks for the month - from the dreamy, honeyed notes of Amouage’s new Love Delight body line to the clinical-meets-luxury French brilliance of Biologique Recherche. And for some everyday pampering, I couldn’t resist adding a few LUSH favourites to the mix - because even a quick shower deserves to feel like a treat!

September is a busy month. Whatever that looks like for you, I hope this issue feels like a friend in your corner, offering ideas, insights and maybe even a little inspiration along the way.

As always, I won’t give away everything here. Instead, I’ll leave you to discover this issue for yourself, perhaps with a quiet coffee once the school run is done!

Happy reading!

I’m always on the lookout for a family outing that’s both fun and meaningful to share with you. This month, I’ve found the perfect one! The Guardians of Water Festival at Terra, Expo City Dubai, calls all young explorers and curious parents alike. Running across the weekend of September 6-7th, this immersive celebration puts water, our planet’s most precious resource, front and centre.

Kids will love the Middle East premiere of ‘Our Blue World’, narrated by Liam Neeson, while hands-on workshops let little ones build a traditional Falaj irrigation system, try interactive water experiments or play Freshwater Heroes Bingo. Lastly, storytelling sessions are on hand to bring tales of the oceans and rivers to life in a fun but intentional way.

I know parents will appreciate the gentle nudge about sustainability, all woven into a day that’s as educational as it is entertaining. Children under 12 also go free, making it an easy, family-friendly September outing that won’t break the bank.

BOOSTING IMMUNITY FOR THE NEW SCHOOL TERM

As the new school year begins, many parents worry about coughs, stomach viruses and bugs. Here’s how to strengthen your child’s immune system and help them thrive all term long.

The long summer days are drawing to a close, which means one thingback-to-school season is here! With new classes, fresh stationery and the excitement of seeing their friends again, there’s plenty for children to look forward to. Yet, for many parents, this time also brings a familiar concern - how to keep little ones healthy when colds, stomach flu and other viruses start making the rounds in classrooms.

The truth is, kids are naturally more exposed to germs when they return to school. Shared spaces, busy playgrounds and close contact with other little ones mean that sniffles and sore throats are often inevitable. However, while you can’t protect children from every virus, you can strengthen their immune systems to help them fight off illness more effectively. The goal isn’t to avoid germs altogether - it’s to equip children’s bodies to deal with them.

Let’s explore some key ways to boost your little ones’ immunity this school term, to keep them happy and thriving!

SLEEP IS THE BEST MEDICINE

One of the simplest but most powerful tools for a strong immune system is quality sleep. Children’s bodies need adequate rest to repair, regulate their hormones and strengthen their immune responses. Without it, their resilience to viruses and infections is always compromised.

As the school year begins, it’s helpful to re-establish a regular bedtime routine. You might try to wind down your household at least an hour before lights out with calming activities such as reading, a warm bath or gentle music. Avoiding screens during this time is also wise, as the blue light emitted can interfere with kids’ melatonin production, disrupting their sleep cycles.

For younger children, 10-12 hours per night is recommended, while older children need between 8-10 hours of sleep. A well-rested child is far better equipped to handle busy school days and ward off illness! Parents may also notice that long, hot evenings can sometimes delay bedtime routines, so creating a cool, dark and comfortable sleep space can make a real difference.

IMMUNITY-BOOSTING FOODS

Food is fuel - and the right kind of fuel can make all the difference to immune health. Nutrient-dense meals give children the vitamins and minerals their bodies need to stay strong. To make a good start, focus on colourful fruits and vegetables, which provide antioxidants that help protect against infection. Citrus fruits, strawberries and kiwis are excellent sources of vitamin C, while carrots, sweet potatoes and leafy greens offer vitamin A to support healthy skin and mucous membranes - often the body’s first line of defence!

Protein is also essential, as it helps build and repair the cells that fight infection. Incorporating beans, lentils, tofu, chicken or fish into your family meals ensures children get the amino acids their bodies need. Healthy fats, found in avocado, nuts, seeds and olive oil, are equally important as they support the absorption of key vitamins and help regulate inflammation.

If your child is a fussy eater, smoothies, soups and pasta sauces are clever ways to sneak in extra vegetables and fruits. A sprinkle of chia seeds, a dollop of nut butter or a handful of spinach in a smoothie can go unnoticed but makes a big difference nutritionally. For dinners that centre around rice, flatbreads and stews, adding colourful vegetables and legumes is a simple, easy way to boost children’s nutrition without any fuss.

FLUSHING OUT GERMS

Hydration often gets overlooked, yet water plays a huge role in flushing out toxins and keeping cells functioning properly. Dehydration can weaken the immune system and make children more vulnerable to illness, so it’s really important to encourage your child to carry a reusable water bottle at school and remind them to sip regularly throughout the day.

If plain water doesn’t appeal to your son or daughter, try flavouring it with fresh fruit slices, or even offer herbal teas such as chamomile or rooibos, which are naturally caffeine-free. Limiting sugary drinks is equally important, as too much sugar can suppress our immune function. In the current climate, where children may spend much of their day moving between the hot outdoors and cool air-conditioned spaces, consistent hydration is even more important.

STAYING ACTIVE!

Exercise isn’t just about keeping children fit - it also boosts up their immune health by increasing circulation and promoting the release of feel-good endorphins. Active play is a brilliant way to help white blood cells move through the body more efficiently, making it easier for kids to fight infections.

Aim for at least an hour of physical activity per day for your child, whether that’s football, swimming, cycling or simply running around the park. For children who aren’t keen on structured sports, fun alternatives like dance, roller-skating or even family yoga sessions can be just as beneficial! The key is consistency, not perfection.

TALKING IT OUT

Just like adults, children can experience stress, particularly when starting a new school term. Academic expectations, social dynamics and adapting to new routines can all feel overwhelming - and stress has a direct impact on immunity.

Creating a supportive home environment where kids feel comfortable expressing their feelings makes a huge difference. As the old saying goes “A problem shared is a problem halved!” and it is often true. With this in mind, it’s wise to set the stage for open conversations at home where you can acknowledge your child’s emotions, whether they’re nervous, excited or anxious. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness or gentle stretching can also help children manage stress in healthy ways.

Simple rituals - such as sharing highs and lows at the dinner tablegive children a chance to reflect on their day and feel heard. Afterall, a calm and secure mind supports a strong and resilient body!

HOW HYGIENE HELPS

While we don’t want to raise children in a germ-free bubble, good hygiene habits are a practical way to reduce the spread of illness. Teaching kids to wash their hands properly - with soap and water for at least 20 seconds - before eating or after using the bathroom is a simple, yet powerful defence against germs.

It’s good to make sure your son or daughter carries tissues for sneezing and knows to cough into their elbow instead of their hands. These small habits protect not only your child, but also their classmates and teachers.

SUPPLEMENTS - ARE THEY NECESSARY?

A balanced diet should provide most of the nutrients children need, but there are times when supplements can be helpful. Vitamin D, in particular, is worth considering, especially in times when high temperatures might limit outdoor playtime. A daily supplement takes the worry out of it for you and means children get enough of this vital vitamin, which plays a big role in immune health.

Probiotics may also support immunity by keeping your child’s gut healthy - after all, much of the immune system is housed there. A word of warning though - if you’re considering supplements, it’s best to consult with your paediatrician to ensure they’re safe and appropriate for your child’s age and needs.

KEEPING IT REAL

At the end of the day, no child can avoid every cold or bug that circulates at school. In fact, exposure to mild infections actually helps strengthen their immune system over time. Whilst no parent wants to see their little one unwell, the goal isn’t to create a shield against all illness - it’s to give your children the best possible foundation for resilience and recovery.

By focusing on the pillars we’ve discussed, children will have the tools they need to stay healthy and happy throughout the school term ahead. And if the odd runny nose does appear, you can rest assured that their strong immune system is ready to tackle it with ease!

TEN WAYS PARENTS CAN RESET IN TEN MINUTES OR LESS

Busy parents rarely have hours to themselves, but a short break can still work wonders. Here are some quick recharge techniques to boost your energy, focus and calm in under ten minutes.

Parenting is one of the most rewarding roles, but it’s also relentless. Between school runs, work commitments, cooking and the endless laundry pile, it can feel as though there’s no time left for you. Many parents push through exhaustion on autopilot, believing that rest requires a long afternoon nap or a spa day. In reality, just ten minutes of intentional downtime can be enough to reset your mind and restore your energy to get through the rest of the day.

The secret lies in choosing small, manageable strategies that fit into real life. Think of them as mini recharges - brief pauses that give your body and brain a chance to breathe before diving back in. Here are some simple, evidence-backed resets that can slot into even the busiest parent’s day.

THE MAGIC OF DEEP BREATHING

It sounds too simple to be effective, but controlled breathing can quickly calm a nervous system under pressure. Try the 4-7-8 method - inhale for four seconds, hold for seven, exhale for eight. Repeat this for four cycles. Within minutes, your heart rate slows, your stress hormones ease and you feel grounded again - magic!

A CUP OF CALM

Instead of mindlessly sipping tea while scrolling your phone, turn the ritual into a mini mindfulness break. Warm your hands on the mug, notice the scent and take slow, deliberate sips. Engaging your senses in this way signals to the brain that it’s time to pause - even five mindful minutes with a cup of tea can feel surprisingly restorative.

STEP OUTSIDE

Fresh air and natural light do wonders for our energy levels. So, step into your garden, balcony or front step, and take in your surroundings. Notice the colour of the sky, feel the air on your skin, listen for birdsong or distant traffic. Try and hear the furthest sound you can, and then the nearest noise to you. A short connection with nature - even if it’s just standing by an open window - can reset your mood and boost focus.

THE TEN-MINUTE DECLUTTER

Clutter creates stress, often without us quite knowing. It creeps up in our homes and slowly takes up more mental bandwidth than you may realise. Set yourself a timer for ten minutes and focus on a single small area - the kitchen counter, a toy basket, or your desk. The physical act of clearing space mirrors a mental declutter, leaving you with a sense of order and calm that lingers long after. You may be surprised how effective this little technique is!

MINI MOVEMENT BURSTS

Exercise doesn’t need to mean gym sessions or running shoes. If you’re tight on time, just try a quick series of stretches, a few squats, or a brisk walk around the block. Just ten minutes of movement releases

endorphins and relieves muscle tension. And if you’re home with your little ones without the option of leaving the house, turn on some music and have a spontaneous dance - it’s fun, mood-lifting and counts as exercise too.

GRATITUDE ON PAPER

When life feels overwhelming, jotting down three things you’re grateful for can shift your perspective instantly. This quick reset doesn’t erase challenges, but it reminds you of what’s going right - something that’s easy to lose sight of during pressurised periods. Over time, this practice has been shown to reduce stress and increase happiness across the board. So, keep a notebook handy and use it in the moments you’d normally reach for your phone.

MICRO-MEDITATION

If you think meditation requires sitting cross-legged for half an hour, think again. Apps like Headspace or Calm offer guided meditations lasting just a few minutes. Even closing your eyes and focusing on your breath for sixty seconds can feel like a tiny little reset button. These micro-meditations help train your brain to find calm quickly, even in chaotic environments - a superpower for parents!

A SONG FOR YOUR SOUL

Music has an immediate impact on our mood. It’s good to create a playlist of songs that energise or soothe you, depending on what you need most. When you can snatch five minutes, just press play, close your eyes and let yourself be carried for three minutes. It’s a fast, enjoyable way to shift gears emotionally - and it requires no preparation.

DIGITAL DETOX BREAK

As you probably know, constant notifications can fragment attention and fuel stress. Treat yourself by taking a deliberate ten-minute break from your phone - silence it, put it out of sight and resist the urge to scroll. Instead, use that time for breathing, stretching or even sitting in quiet stillness. It takes practice, but you’ll return with a clearer head and renewed focus.

VISUALISATION RESET

Close your eyes and picture yourself somewhere peaceful - a quiet beach, a forest trail, a favourite childhood place. Imagining yourself there, in detail, can have a truly powerful, calming effect. Neuroscience shows that visualisation activates similar brain regions to actually being there, making this a surprisingly effective reset for frazzled parents that can be done in minutes.

TAKE THE TIME

As parents, it’s easy to believe we must push through fatigue until there’s time for “real rest.” But those mythical free hours rarely arrive. Instead, the small moments we carve out during the day are the ones that keep us balanced, calm and energised.

Taking just ten minutes - or even two - to breathe, move, write, or step outside can transform how you feel. After all, a calmer parent creates a calmer home! So the next time you’re running on empty, don’t wait for a big break. Try a mini reset. It may be short, but its impact lasts long after those ten minutes are up. Far from being selfish, these resets make you more present and patient with your children - so, remember that and prioritise yourself for a few minutes in the chaos!

THE BENEFITS OF A BEDTIME ROUTINE FOR YOUR BABY

We look at how simple, repeatable steps can help your little one wind down and fall asleep more easily.

There’s something truly magical about bedtime. The house quiets down, the lights dim and for a few precious moments, it’s just you and your baby winding down together. A consistent routine isn’t only about getting more sleep - it’s about creating comfort, security and healthy habits that will stay with your little one for years to come.

WHY ROUTINES MATTER

Babies thrive on predictability. When you start a bedtime routine early, you’re teaching your child gentle cues that signal it’s time to rest. Over time, these cues make bedtime smoother, with less fussing and fewer late-night battles. Your baby begins to understand that certain activities - like a warm bath or a soft story - mean it’s time to wind down.

A familiar routine also provides reassurance when schedules are disrupted. Vacations, weekends at grandparents’ or even a night in a hotel can interrupt sleep, but following the same steps your baby knows - a calming lullaby or familiar lotions - brings the comfort of home, wherever you are.

Consistency at night helps babies learn to selfsoothe. Instead of seeing bedtime as a challenge, they start to expect a calm, predictable end to their day. This routine encourages restful sleep and much better emotional wellbeing.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

An effective routine is simple, predictable and soothing - so begin winding down while your baby is still calm, with a diaper change, soft pajamas and a gentle rock in your arms or a chair. The goal is to pacify, not excite, helping your little one transition easily into sleep.

Wherever the routine starts, make sure the final steps happen in your child’s room. Reading a story, singing a lullaby, or sharing a quiet cuddle signals that this space is for rest, helping them associate their bedroom with sleep.

Consistency is key – repetition is how habits form. Following the same steps every night trains your baby’s body and mind to know what comes next, making bedtime predictable and reassuring.

GENTLE ACTIVITIES

Here are the top three steps to relax your baby ahead of bedtime.

A warm bath

A soothing bath signals the day is ending. For delicate skin, gentle, tear-free products like QV Baby 2 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner leave hair soft and skin feeling fresh without irritation, preparing your baby for a restful night.

Story time

Books are more than entertainment – they’re a chance to bond and support language development. Even a short story brings comfort and reinforces routine.

Moisturise and massage

After the bath, a gentle application of QV Baby Barrier Cream nourishes delicate skin and protects against dryness, especially in the diaper area.

LASTING ROUTINES

The earlier you start, the more natural your wind down routine becomes, turning bedtime into a treasured, peaceful ritual rather than a nightly struggle. With a calm routine and carefully chosen products like QV Baby 2 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner and QV Baby Barrier Cream, you’re giving your baby security, comfort and quality rest - and a little peace of mind for yourself too!

SCHOOL LUNCHES KIDS WILL ACTUALLY EAT

Packing a healthy lunch is one thing, but getting children to actually eat it is another challenge altogether. Here’s how to make school lunches nutritious, simple and appealing for kids.

Every parent knows the feeling - you carefully pack a balanced, colourful lunchbox in the morning, only to find half of it untouched - or worse, traded for crisps - at the end of the day. School lunches can be a real battleground, particularly if you’re trying to balance nutrition, convenience and your child’s personal tastes.

The good news is that it doesn’t need to be a daily struggle. With a bit of planning, creativity and a dash of flexibility, you can prepare school lunches that are both healthy and appetising. It’s not about crafting Instagram-perfect bento boxes, but rather about providing nourishing meals that kids genuinely look forward to eating.

So what are the secrets to school lunches that tick all the boxes? Let’s break it down.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Children are often creatures of habit. While adults may crave variety, many kids are happy with familiar favourites that feel safe and comforting. Instead of reinventing the wheel every day, try to identify a handful of reliable go-to meals that your child

consistently enjoys. Rotating between these will save you time and reduce stress in the mornings.

Simple sandwiches or wraps can be given a healthy twist with wholegrain bread, hummus, avocado or lean protein like chicken, tuna or falafel. If your child dislikes crusts or certain fillings, it’s worth respecting those preferences rather than battling over them - the goal is for the food to actually be eaten.

BALANCE IS KEY

A successful lunchbox combines a balance of macronutrientscarbohydrates for energy, protein for growth and repair, and healthy fats for concentration. Add in plenty of fruit and vegetables for vitamins, minerals and fibre, and you’ve got a winning combination.

Think of it as four building blocks:

• Main item: sandwich, wrap, pasta, rice or grain salad

• Fruit: fresh, dried or cut-up for ease

• Vegetable: carrot sticks, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes

• Snack or treat: yoghurt, popcorn, homemade muffin

By sticking to this structure, you can quickly assemble a lunchbox without overthinking, while still covering your child’s nutritional needs. Over time, kids also learn to expect this balance, which helps them form healthier eating habits naturally.

MAKE IT VISUALLY APPEALING

Children are more likely to eat something if it looks fun and colourful! While you don’t need to spend hours cutting fruit into animal shapes, small touches can make food more appealing. Bright silicone cups

for separating snacks, colourful skewers for fruit, or even cutting sandwiches into halves or triangles can spark curiosity.

Adding a variety of colours naturally makes lunches healthier too. A rainbow of grapes, berries, peppers and carrots is far more enticing than a beige box of crackers and bread. Even something as simple as including one “surprise” food item - like a new fruit or a different dipcan make opening the lunchbox more exciting.

INVOLVE YOUR KIDS

Children are more likely to eat their lunch if they’ve had a say in what goes into it. Involving them in the planning process gives them that all-important sense of ownership and makes mealtimes more positive. If you can, at the weekend or at a time that works for you, ask your child to help you choose a few lunchbox options for the week ahead.

Older children may even enjoy helping with preparation, such as washing fruit, portioning snacks or assembling wraps. Younger ones can be given simple choices, like “Would you like apple slices or grapes today?” Providing options rather than asking open-ended questions avoids overwhelming them, while still giving them a voice and also making sure your chosen healthy structure is followed too.

THINK BEYOND SANDWICHES

While sandwiches are a staple, they’re not the only option. Variety can keep lunches exciting and encourage children to eat more widely. You could consider:

• Pasta or noodle salads with simple dressings

• Rice bowls with beans, vegetables and a sprinkle of cheese

• Mini frittatas or muffins packed with hidden vegetables

• Pita pockets or tortilla wraps filled with hummus and roasted veg

• Leftovers from last night’s dinner (if they travel well)

Bento-style boxes, with different compartments, make it easy to offer small amounts of several items rather than one large portion - which is particularly helpful for picky eaters.

HEALTHY SNACK SWAPS

Snacks are often the biggest stumbling block. Many packaged snacks are high in sugar or salt, which provide little nutrition and can lead to energy crashes. The trick is to offer alternatives that still feel like a treat.

Swap crisps for air-popped popcorn, biscuits for oat bars, or chocolate for energy balls made with dates and cocoa. Dips like hummus or tzatziki paired with carrot sticks or breadsticks are fun to eat and pack in extra nutrients. Even simple swaps, such as replacing juice boxes with water flavoured with fruit slices, can make a significant difference over time.

STAY MINDFUL OF PORTIONS

It’s easy to overpack a lunchbox out of worry that your child might go hungry. But too much food can feel overwhelming and may lead to more

waste. Aim for portions that reflect your child’s appetite and activity level, and remember that snacks and meals outside of school will make up the balance.

Younger children may prefer smaller, more frequent bites rather than a large sandwich. Offering two mini wraps or a few cheese cubes with crackers can feel more manageable.

CULTURAL FLAVOURS AND FAMILY FAVOURITES

Living in the UAE, families have access to a wide variety of cuisines. Don’t be afraid to include cultural favourites in your child’s lunchbox - a small portion of biryani, a stuffed paratha or lentil stew can be just as healthy and satisfying as a sandwich. Children often feel proud to share a piece of home-cooked culture with their peers and it’s a good way to keep them connected to family traditions.

This can also be a lovely opportunity to introduce variety - as alternating familiar foods with new ones helps expand your child’s palate while keeping them connected to their roots.

KEEP IT SAFE

With warm weather and long school days, food safety is a key concern. Invest in a good quality insulated lunch bag and even opt for reusable ice packs to keep food fresh if you need to. Pack perishables like yoghurt or cheese next to cool foods, and avoid items that spoil quickly in heat. Teaching older children to return half-eaten food rather than leaving it in a warm bag also helps you keep track of what they’re actually eating.

THE TRICK WITH TREATS

Completely banning treats can backfire, making children more likely to crave them. Including a small, balanced treat - like a homemade biscuit or a piece of dark chocolate - helps children feel satisfied and prevents them from swapping food with friends. Remembermoderation is the key, not restriction.

TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF

Lastly, remember that no lunchbox will be perfect every day. Some weeks will go smoothly, others may involve more half-eaten sandwiches than you’d like. That’s normal. Children’s appetites fluctuate and what they refuse today may be their favourite next week.

Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on consistency and balance over time. If most days feature a mix of protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, then you’re on the right track. Also, try not to compare your child’s lunchbox to others - what matters most is that it works for your child and your family.

THE BOTTOM LINE

School lunches don’t need to be complicated, time-consuming or stressful. By keeping things simple, balanced and appealing - and by involving children in the process - you can create lunchboxes that nourish their bodies and actually get eaten. Healthy eating habits developed in childhood can last a lifetime, and the school lunchbox is a wonderful place to start!

PARENTING

ABI ANDREOTTI PERSONALITY IN FOCUS:

We caught up with content creator Abi Andreotti to discuss her family’s transition, the lessons learned and the joys of building a new life in Dubai.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to uproot your family and start anew in a vibrant city like Dubai, Abi Andreotti offers a candid glimpse into that journey. Originally from London, Abi, along with her husband and daughter Aurelia, recently embarked on a new chapter in the UAE. Her content revolves around motherhood, parenting tips, the nuances of life in Dubai and her experiences as an expatriate mother.

Through her vlogs on TikTok and Instagram (@abiandreotti_), Abi shares the unfiltered realities of parenting abroad - from navigating school choices and home renovations to navigating pregnancy challenges far from home. Her honesty is incredibly refreshing and her candid insights have gained her a loyal following.

How fathers can pass on life lessons; why you should say “I believe you” more often; getting organised for term-time and more!

Abi, would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi I’m Abi, I am a 31 year old mum of two girls - Aurelia age 6 and Allegra who I recently welcomed into the world. For the last year I have called Dubai home after previously living in Greece for five years!

Abi, what inspired your family’s move to Dubai, and how has the transition been for you all?

We had been considering moving to Dubai for some time. We actually had the opportunity through my husband’s work to move there in 2018 but instead chose to move to Greece.

We didn’t enjoy living in Greece so when the opportunity arose to move to Dubai in 2024, we took it as we had friends already living here who encouraged us as they loved the lifestyle Dubai offered their families.

What were some unexpected challenges you faced when settling into Dubai, especially in terms of parenting and daily life?

The biggest challenge we faced was schooling. Schools are so big in Dubai compared to what my daughter was used to in Greece - so it was very overwhelming for her when we first moved here and she really struggled to settle.

We soon realised the school we had chosen for her unfortunately wasn’t the best choice. So we made the difficult decision to change schools in January and it was the best decision we could have made as she is now so happy and loves her new school!

You’ve shared glimpses of your home renovation journey. How are you going about making your new house feel like home?

When looking for a home in Dubai we struggled to find one that ticked all the boxes - that was also within our budget! Eventually, we made the decision to renovate, as I love the idea of having a traditional British style home. I wanted our space here to be comforting and remind us of our home in the UK. Our project is almost complete and we hope to move in within the next few weeks which is so exciting!

Congratulations on your second pregnancy! You’ve shared

previously that it’s been a tough road - what advice would you give to other mothers going through the same thing?

It unfortunately has been a tough journey to conceive our second daughter as we suffered with secondary infertility. After falling pregnant easily with my eldest daughter I never expected to be affected by infertility and I found it to be the hardest, loneliest place. I really struggled and felt so down - I knew I was so fortunate to have Aurelia but she desperately wanted a sibling and I felt like I was failing her.

My advice would be to not give up! At times you will definitely feel like you want to but staying positive and believing it’s not a case of if you have a baby, but a case when, can help so much.

It is also important to have somebody you can talk to. I was so lucky to have a best friend who had been through the same and she was my rock throughout this period. I am so grateful I had her support.

Experiencing pregnancy in Dubai’s climate must be a change for you. How was that?

The climate was okay until summer began! It was then so hot and impossible to go for walks outside which I really missed as I enjoyed keeping active in my pregnancy. The intense heat was one of the reasons I chose to return to London to give birth to Allegra.

What does a typical weekend look like for your family in Dubai? Any favorite spots or activities you all enjoy?

In the morning my husband likes to get up early and play golf. He does this while Aurelia will be at one of her hobbies; she loves horse riding and dancing!

We then go out as a family. We love to go to the beach and one of our favourite spots is kite beach. It’s great for lunch with the kids followed by a swim in the sea!

Our favourite thing about living in Dubai is how much time we can spend outdoors. I was shocked we were still going to the beach in June! I thought it would be too hot but actually if you go early, it is perfect!

Your content is refreshingly honest. What motivates you to share both the triumphs and trials of expat life?

Thank you so much! I think it’s so important to know that if you choose to share so much of your life publicly then you need to share the good and bad! Lots of my followers are also expats, many of whom live in Dubai and I want them to be able to relate to my page and my experiencesboth the highs and lows.

I could never only share the positives as it might lead people to question why they’re struggling when I seem to be breezing through - especially when this has not been the reality for me!

Relocating your family is hard, you’re going to experience struggles along the way. I hope by sharing mine I have helped other families. Also, it works both ways - I often ask for advice from my followers. I feel I have a really great community and we all help one another!

As you continue to build your life in Dubai, what are you most excited about for your family’s future?

I am so excited for this next chapter with both my girls. I can’t wait to experience raising them in such a wonderful family friendly city as Dubai. I know we will have lots of great experiences here and make lovely memories.

Thank you so much for talking to us Abi!

SIMPLE WAYS TO ORGANISE FAMILY LIFE AFTER THE HOLIDAYS

The post-summer period can feel overwhelming as families shift back into term-time routines. Here are simple, practical ways to restore order and make life smoother this month.

Post-summer life can feel like trying to catch a train that’s already left the station - alarm clocks blare, schedules tighten and suddenly you’re juggling after-school clubs, homework reminders and lunches in transit. It’s a familiar scene, and the good news is that you don’t need to overhaul everything to find calm again. A few simple, deliberate steps can help you ease back into the rhythm of term time with confidence.

RE-ESTABLISH ROUTINES

During the holidays, mealtimes and bedtimes often slip later, and while that flexibility is part of the fun, it can make school mornings a struggle with mismatched internal clocks and slow starts.

Instead of flipping the switch, it’s better to pull bedtime and meals back gradually throughout the first weeks of term. Simply shift lights-out

and dinner by fifteen minutes each night. If bedtime has crept later, it’s amazing what a little nudge evening after evening can do! These small resets let your child’s body ease into a reliable rhythm - and give you back that elusive control.

These aren’t strict rules - they’re gentle signals. Over time, consistent routines calm the chaos and send a message that bedtime isn’t just a concept, but rather, it’s a comforting, expected habit.

DECLUTTER AND RESET SPACES

After holidays filled with outings, gifts and travel, homes can quickly become full. By the end of summer, clutter can be more than just visibleit can take a toll on your efficiency, especially on sleepy school mornings. A decluttered home isn’t perfection - it’s function.

Start small, maybe with the schoolbag area or any hot-spot near the front door. Tidy homework desks or the kitchen counter too. Better yet, invite your child into the process by saying something like, “Want to sort out your school bag together?” Let them manage their toys or wardrobe where possible, deciding for themselves what to keep, donate, or recycle. Ownership turns tidy time into empowerment - plus, you’ll find mornings flow easier when everything has a place.

CREATE A FAMILY CALENDAR

Busy schedules are often the biggest source of stress. School events, activities, work commitments and social plans can pile up quickly! A central family calendar keeps everyone on the same page - whether paper, dry-erase, hanging by the fridge, or synced digitally, colour-coding each person’s commitments lets everyone scan the week and say “Got it.” Use Sunday evenings to gather as a family, review the week and set expectations. This can also prepare everyone mentally for what’s ahead. It takes less than five minutes and gives everyone clarity - and comfort.

MEAL PLAN TO REDUCE STRESS

Dinner time often feels like the most chaotic part of the day as it’s often at the tired end of the weekday. Meal planning is one of the simplest ways to save time, reduce waste and ensure your family eats well.

You don’t need elaborate meals - just briefly planning out a week’s worth of dinners makes grocery shopping easier and removes the daily “what’s for dinner?” debate. Sundays can be for sketching out the week’s evening

meals - even simple dishes count. Write them down, match a grocery list and look for meals to double for easy leftovers. Whether slow-cooker curries, quick stir-fries or healthy bakes, a small plan simplifies a chaotic hour and gives your family nourishment without the frantic dash home.

SET UP A MORNING ROUTINE THAT WORKS

Mornings often set the tone for the day and stress often stems from evening chaos. To avoid frantic rushing, combat it by doing small things the night before. Think about what tasks can be prepared in the evening - laying out clothes, packing bags and lunches, even setting the breakfast table.

A visual checklist for younger children - like “shoes on, bag packed, brush teeth” - empowers them to take responsibility without the routine nagging. These ten-minute night-before habits give you back space to breathe in the morning and that calmer pace makes a big difference - for you and your child.

KEEP THE CONNECTION

Structure is one half of the back-to-school puzzle. Organisation isn’t only about managing tasks - it’s also about protecting space for connection. After busy holidays, families can sometimes scatter once term begins. Scheduling regular family time, whether it’s a weekly movie night, a shared sport or daily dinners, helps maintain closeness.

These moments don’t need to be elaborate. What matters is consistency and making sure children feel they still have their parents’ attention, even in the midst of busy schedules. So, do your best to make time weekly for simple but meaningful moments - after-school chats over fruit, a silly league of board games, a walk home together. No pressure, no agendajust small moments of quiet presence. These shared rituals will anchor your family bonds in the school-day shuffle.

STREAMLINE ACTIVITIES

It’s tempting to sign kids up for every exciting after-school opportunity. But overscheduling leads to exhaustion - for them and you. Instead, take stock! Ask yourself which activities are most valuable and enjoyable, which ones spark joy and which drain energy? Let your child pick a few that light them up, and consider limiting the rest. Children benefit from downtime just as much as structured pursuits, and fewer commitments often mean less stress and more family time.

ORGANISE SCHOOL SUPPLIES

The start of a new term is a good opportunity to check your basic supplies. Sorting through stationery, uniforms, sports kits and lunchboxes in advance avoids the last-minute panic when something essential is missing in the first weeks of term.

A designated homework or study space, stocked with pens, paper and supplies, also makes it easier for children to settle into schoolwork without excuses.

The shift back to routine after the holidays can feel challenging, but with a few simple strategies, family life can become more manageable and enjoyable, helping you create a home environment where everyone can thrive.

LIFE LESSONS EVERY DAD CAN TEACH

Fathers play a powerful role in shaping their children’s lives. From resilience to kindness, here are the life lessons every dad can pass on to help children grow with confidence and compassion.

When it comes to parenting, mothers often receive much of the attention. However, fathers bring their own unique strengths, perspectives and lessons to family life. The relationship between a dad and his child is a powerful one, offering opportunities to role model values, build up resilience and nurture a sense of identity.

Children learn as much from observing how their parents live as they do from what they are told. Everyday moments - from fixing a bike tyre to cheering on the sidelines - carry lasting lessons about character, responsibility and how to navigate the world.

THE VALUE OF RESILIENCE

Life doesn’t always go smoothly, and one of the greatest gifts a father can give is showing how to get back up after setbacks. Whether

it’s losing a match, struggling with homework or coping with disappointment, children learn resilience by seeing their dad face challenges calmly and keep trying.

Sharing stories from his own experiencestimes he failed, persevered and eventually succeeded - helps children understand that mistakes are part of learning and not a reason to give up. This lesson teaches them not to fear failure but to view it as an opportunity for growth.

RESPECT FOR OTHERS

Fathers have a vital role in modelling respect, whether it’s towards their partner, colleagues, neighbours, other children or strangers. Kids notice the tone of voice used, the patience shown and the way conflicts are handled. When dads demonstrate respect in their everyday interactions, they teach children that kindness and consideration are the foundation of strong relationships. Simple actions - thanking a waiter, listening without interrupting, treating others fairly - all carry weight and leave a deep impression.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HARD WORK

Hard work doesn’t always mean long hours. It’s about showing commitment, responsibility and pride in doing a job well, no matter how big or small. Fathers can show this through tasks at home as well as through their professional lives.

When children see their dad tackle DIY projects, cook dinner, or persevere with a tricky repair, they learn the satisfaction

that comes from effort and patience. Encouraging little ones to take on ageappropriate chores reinforces the idea that everyone contributes and that persistence always pays off in the end.

A SENSE OF HUMOUR

Life can be serious, but dads often bring a playful energy that teaches children not to take everything too heavily. A sense of humour helps kids build resilience, ease social situations and find joy in everyday moments.

Sharing jokes, being silly or turning a mistake into a laugh shows that it’s okay not to be perfect. Humour, when used kindly, becomes a valuable coping tool and helps children see the lighter side of challenges and disappointments.

RESPONSIBILITY AND INTEGRITY

Fathers play an important part in teaching children to take responsibility for their actions. That might be as simple as returning borrowed items, apologising when wrong, or admitting to mistakes without blame.

By following through on promises, paying bills on time, or turning up when they say they will, dads can showcase integrity. These everyday lessons shape kids into trustworthy adults who value honesty, accountability and the importance of keeping their word.

THE JOY OF CURIOSITY

Many dads naturally enjoy sharing hobbies, whether it’s fishing, music, sports or

tinkering with gadgets. In doing so, they pass on a love of discovery and problem-solving.

Encouraging little ones to ask questions, explore their own interests and try new activities teaches them curiosity is something to embrace, not suppress. This sense of wonder helps them approach the world with enthusiasm and creativity, and gives them confidence to follow those passions wherever they may lead.

KINDNESS AND EMPATHY

Fathers also teach empathy by showing compassion to others - whether checking in on a friend, helping a neighbour or comforting a child after a hard day.

When children witness kindness in action, they learn that strength isn’t about dominance, but about understanding and supporting those around us. This lesson prepares them to build caring, respectful relationships of their own.

BALANCE AND PERSPECTIVE

Finally, dads can show children the importance of balance - between work and family, seriousness and fun, independence and togetherness.

Spending time playing in the garden, sharing meals or simply listening shows that success isn’t measured only by career achievements, but by the relationships we nurture. This balance helps children grow up with a healthy perspective on what really matters in life.

BUILT OVER TIME

The life lessons children learn from their dads don’t come in a single conversation. They are built through repeated actions, everyday routines and the consistent presence of a caring parent.

Resilience, respect, humour, hard work, kindness and curiosity - these are qualities that shape children into confident, compassionate adults. By showing these daily, fathers give their children a toolkit for navigating life’s challenges and joys.

Every dad has something unique to pass on. It’s not about being perfect, but rather, about being present - and showing children, through example, the kind of values that last a lifetime.

THE POWER OF SAYING “I BELIEVE YOU”

We delve into the magic of the threeword phrase that should be part of everyone’s parenting toolkit.

Parenting is full of moments when our children share pieces of their world with us. Sometimes it’s something joyful - a new friend, a proud achievement. Other times, it’s something heavy - a worry they’ve been carrying, an experience that hurt, or something that just didn’t feel right.

There’s a quiet kind of magic in the words “I believe you.”For a child who’s mustered the courage to share something big - or even something small that feels big to them - knowing they’re heard and believed is a powerful step toward building trust and resilience. When kids feel safe to open up, they learn that their emotions, experiences, and perceptions matter. But when their feelings are dismissed or doubted, even unintentionally, that trust can crumble. Here’s how you can lean into the power of belief and create a home where your child knows they can talk - and you’ll listen.

WHY “I BELIEVE YOU” MATTERS

Think about how vulnerable it feels to share something personal, even as an adult. Now imagine being a child, unsure how the words will land. For kids, opening up - whether it’s about a spat with a friend, a worry about school, or something more serious - is an act of bravery.

Children who feel safe sharing their experiences - good and bad - develop stronger emotional resilience. “I believe you” acts like a safety net. It separates the act of sharing from judgement or criticism, letting your child know that what they feel and what they’ve experienced is valid.

Imagine your child says they were left out during lunch at school. The instinctive response might be to problem-solve by saying, “Maybe you should sit with someone else tomorrow.” But starting with “I believe you” creates a calm, supportive space first. It reassures them that they don’t have to convince you, that you trust what you’re saying.

Kids who grow up feeling heard and believed are more likely to develop strong self-esteem, healthy boundaries and the confidence to ask for help when they need it.

START WITH YOUR REACTION

The way you respond in the moment can shape how your little one continues to share with you. Even if what they’re saying feels surprising, confusing, or even hard to hear, try to stay calm and open.

Instead of jumping in with questions or solutions, pause and offer your belief first. A simple, “Thank you for telling me - I believe you,” creates immediate safety. From there, you can guide the conversation gently, asking clarifying questions or offering support as needed.

EVERYDAY MOMENTS MATTER

“I believe you” isn’t reserved for big, serious conversations. In fact, weaving it into the small, everyday moments is what helps normalise trust. When your child says their homework is harder than it looks, or that a game at breaktime didn’t feel fun, validating their perspective builds a foundation of connection. For example, if your child tells you they felt scared walking into a new classroom, resist the urge to brush it off with “Oh, you’ll be fine.” Instead, try, “I believe you. Starting something new can be scary.” That validation gives them the space to process feelings in a healthy, supported way. By consistently showing that you take their words seriously, you make it easier for them to turn to you when something truly significant happens. Think about adolescence - when friendships shift, emotions run high, and challenges like peer pressure or online interactions become part of daily life. A child who has been consistently met with belief will know, deep down, that their parent is a safe place to land.

A TOOL FOR DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS

Sometimes, what your child shares might be hard to hear. They might tell you about a mistake they made, an uncomfortable

situation, or even a serious concern like bullying or inappropriate behaviour from someone else.

In those moments, “I believe you” is more than just comforting - it’s grounding. It keeps the focus on your child’s need for support, rather than your own fear or frustration.

You can always follow up with gentle, clarifying questions later. But by starting with belief, you show your child that they did the right thing by coming to you.

REPAIRING TOGETHER

No parent gets it right every time. There will be moments when you’re tired, distracted, or unsure how to respond and your child may feel brushed off. What matters most is repair.

Circle back when you can and say, “I’m sorry if it felt like I wasn’t listening earlier. I believe you and I want to understand.” That kind of humility not only rebuilds trust but also shows healthy ways to handle mistakes in relationships.

SMALL WORDS, BIG BENEFITS

When kids grow up feeling that their thoughts and feelings have value, they carry that confidence into friendships, classrooms, and eventually adulthood. They learn to advocate for themselves and, importantly, to listen to and believe others in return.

Ultimately, belief is simple, but it’s never small. The beauty of “I believe you” is its simplicity. It doesn’t require a parenting manual or a perfect script. It’s just three words, offered consistently and sincerely, that tell your child they are seen, heard, and valued.

EDUCATION

Positive digital tools for young learners and how Odyssey Nursery is bringing an authentic Reggio Emilia ethos to the region.

THE TOP APPS AND TOOLS THAT SUPPORT LEARNING

Screen time doesn’t have to mean mindless scrolling. With the right digital tools, children can turn their tech time into valuable opportunities for learning and discovery.

Parents often worry about screens - and understandably so. Too much passive viewing can lead to overstimulation, worsened concentration and missed opportunities for play. However, not all screen time is created equal. When chosen carefully, apps and digital tools can support your child’s learning, grow their curiosity and even encourage creativity. The key is balance - making sure screen time is purposeful and age-appropriate.

So, which apps and tools really make a difference? Here are some parent-approved options that combine fun with genuine educational value.

EARLY LEARNING FAVOURITES

For younger children, apps such as Endless Alphabet and Khan Academy Kids are wonderful introductions to letters, sounds and early maths. Both are playful, brightly animated and keep little learners engaged without it feeling like “work.”

Montessori Crosswords is another gem, encouraging children to build words phonetically. Its hands-on style mirrors Montessori methods, helping kids connect letters and sounds in a tactile way.

Parents often find these kinds of apps particularly useful on flights or long car journeys, when a quiet but educational distraction is most welcome.

OLDER CHILDREN AND SCHOOL SUPPORT

As children move into primary school and beyond, apps like Duolingo make language learning both fun and accessible, while Prodigy Maths gamifies problem-solving in a way that feels more like an adventure than a lesson.

For science enthusiasts, try Toca Lab, which allows kids to experiment in a playful digital lab, while NASA Kids’ Club brings space exploration to life with interactive games and resources. Apps like these can give curious minds the freedom to explore topics well beyond their school curriculum.

CREATIVE AND CRITICAL THINKING TOOLS

Screen time doesn’t need to be limited to academic subjects. Creative apps like Book Creator allow children to make their own illustrated stories, while Stop Motion Studio turns their toys into animated films, building problem-solving and storytelling skills along the way.

For older children, Scratch (from MIT) is a fantastic introduction to coding, encouraging logical thinking and creativity as they design games and animations. Exploring these tools together can also help demystify technology for parents, giving families a chance to learn side by side.

MAKING IT COUNT

Of course, even the best educational apps should sit alongside plenty of offline play, reading and family interaction. Try setting time limits that work for your child’s age and consider using screen time as a reward after homework or outdoor play.

Sitting alongside your child while they use these apps can also make a huge difference. Not only does it reassure you about what they’re watching, but it also turns screen time into shared time, giving you a chance to ask questions and extend their learning. You might even find that children are more likely to retain what they’ve learned if they explain it back to you.

When thoughtfully chosen, screens are more than just a distraction - they can be a window to new ideas, skills and creativity. The right apps provide opportunities to learn in ways that feel playful and exciting, giving children the best of both worlds.

WHEN WORDS AREN’T ENOUGH:

THE ONE HUNDRED LANGUAGES OF REGGIO EMILIA AT ODYSSEY NURSERIES

Every child has one hundred ways of speaking. A hundred ways to ask, learn, explore and shine.

Odyssey is a Reggio Emilia-inspired early years center in Dubai, developed by Kids First Group, serving children aged 3 months to 6 years. With a trilingual program in English, Arabic and French, Odyssey offers a holistic, project-based learning experience rooted in nature, creativity and community. Regular educator training by Reggio experts from Italy ensures the approach remains authentic, responsive, and future-ready.

For much of history, education was built on a narrow belief - that children could only succeed through words. Reading, writing and reciting were seen as the gold standards of intelligence, while children who expressed themselves differently were often overlooked. This one-dimensional view left many children feeling their voices didn’t matter and limited their creativity and imagination.

Today, research in neuroscience and education shows that children express and process knowledge in countless ways. This is the heart of the Reggio Emilia approach, which recognises that children are born with ‘100 languages’. They communicate not only through words, but also through painting, clay, music, dance, construction, shadow play, digital media, storytelling, role play and more. Each is a valid, powerful language that reveals how they think, feel and understand the world.

“At Odyssey, we believe every child has a voice, a story and a path,” says Janet Ghanem, Director of Odyssey Nurseries in Dubai. “The Reggio Emilia approach recognises that every child has a hundred ways of speaking - and a hundred ways to ask, to learn, to explore and to shine.”

LEARNING BEYOND WORDS

At Odyssey Nursery, the Reggio Emilia approach is embedded in everyday learning. Children explore ideas through materials, light, sound and nature - not only through books or worksheets. They sculpt emotions in clay, build towers to explore balance, tell stories through puppetry,

choreograph dances, or create music from recycled objects. This approach is especially beneficial for children with speech challenges or for those new to Dubai who are still learning English, providing alternative ways to express themselves, engage and build confidence.

THE ATELIER: WHERE VOICES MULTIPLY

At the heart of each Odyssey campus is the Atelier, a creative workshop filled with recycled and natural materials. Here, children experiment with materials, develop problem-solving skills, collaborate with peers and express complex ideas in multiple forms - from sculpting emotions to storytelling with shadows. By exploring freely, children strengthen creativity, curiosity and communication skills that extend far beyond words.

FAMILIES AS PARTNERS

In the Reggio Emilia approach, learning extends beyond the classroom. Parents participate in projects and view documentation of children’s discoveries, showing children that their thoughts, questions and creations matter. This reinforces self-confidence, encourages

reflection and nurtures a sense of ownership and pride, motivating children to continue exploring and experimenting.

A MULTICULTURAL LEARNING LANDSCAPE

In Dubai, where children come from dozens of nationalities and speak many languages, the Reggio Emilia approach is especially powerful. It celebrates cultural diversity, allowing children to share their heritage and ideas in ways that go beyond translation. Through art, music, storytelling and movement, children connect across differences, building empathy and understanding in a truly global city.

BUILDING A MORE INCLUSIVE FUTURE

Where traditional systems limited children to a single form of expression, the Reggio Emilia approach ensures every child is heard. By recognising the 100 Languages, education develops problem-solving, collaboration, communication, creativity and adaptability - skills essential not only in school but also in future careers where innovation and teamwork are key.

WHAT TO PACK WHEN TRAVELLING WITH A BABY

Packing for a holiday with a baby can feel overwhelming! Here’s how to separate the essentials from the nice-to-haves, so you can travel lighter, smarter and stress-free.

Travelling with a baby for the first time can feel like preparing for an expedition. Suddenly, every small decision - from which stroller to pack to how many nappies to bring - seems monumental. Many parents end up packing half the nursery “just in case,” only to discover they don’t use half of what they brought.

The truth is that babies don’t need as much as we think. With thoughtful planning and a few clever hacks, travelling light is not only possible, but it’s also liberating. Here’s how to focus on what’s truly needed - and what you can safely leave behind.

THE ABSOLUTE ESSENTIALS

When travelling, the basics are non-negotiable - feeding, sleeping, changing and comfort. Pack enough nappies, wipes and a changing mat for the journey, plus a spare outfit or two for inevitable spills. Formula-fed babies will need pre-measured formula and sterilised bottles, whereas breastfeeding mothers may want a discreet cover or portable pump.

For sleep, a lightweight travel cot or foldable bassinet is helpful, though many hotels can provide one if arranged in advance. A baby carrier is invaluable - freeing your hands at

airports, train stations and busy streets, all while keeping your little one soothed and close.

Don’t forget a small first-aid kit with babysafe pain relief, thermometer, nail clippers and any prescribed medications. These are much harder to replace on the go than clothes or snacks.

GOOD TO HAVE, BUT NOT NECESSARY

Some items make life easier but aren’t must-haves. A lightweight stroller is useful

for sightseeing but bulky models can be more trouble than they’re worth on cobbled streets or public transport. Many families find it easier to rely on carriers or compact, foldable strollers designed for travel.

Portable white-noise machines or blackout blinds can help with naps, but a soft blanket and a familiar sleep toy often work just as well. Similarly, while travel sterilisers are handy, many parents manage with sterilising tablets or simply boiling water. A small foldable high chair or fabric seat harness can be convenient in restaurants, though most hotels and cafés provide decent baby seating.

WHAT YOU CAN SKIP

You might be surprised at what you don’t need. Large toys, extra blankets and endless outfits rarely see use. Most babies are happiest with a couple of small toys and the comfort of familiar routines. Hotels and rental homes usually provide towels and bedding, so there’s no need to carry extras. Bulky food supplies can also be avoided. Baby food and snacks are widely available in most destinations, and carrying a few favourites for the journey is usually sufficient. Remember, local shops can be a resource, not a problem.

Bringing just enough for the first 24 hours is usually all you need - after that, you can buy as you go.

PACK SMART, TRAVEL LIGHT

It’s always clever to think in terms of multiuse items. A muslin cloth can serve as a bib, sunshade, blanket or changing cover. A large scarf works as a breastfeeding cover, pram shade or also as a lightweight blanket. Choosing versatile items like these saves both space and stress.

Packing cubes or resealable bags are a brilliant help to keep baby essentials organised - nappies in one, clothes in another and feeding items in a separate pouch. This way, you won’t be rummaging through your bag at the worst possible moment. A dedicated “grab bag” for the flight - with nappies, wipes, snacks and a change of clothes - ensures everything you need is easily on hand without digging through your luggage.

TRAVEL TIPS

For families based in the region, a few specific considerations will apply. Our climate means sun protection is a year-round priority. A wide-brimmed baby hat, breathable cotton

clothing and baby-safe sunscreen are essential, especially if you’re heading on a staycation or to sunny destinations.

If you’re flying long-haul, check with airlines about bassinets in advance. Many international carriers provide these on request for infants under a certain weight. Also, remember that airport security in the UAE is well set up for families - prams and car seats are permitted right up to the gate with most airlines.

If your holiday involves cooler climates, pack layers. Babies from hot-weather environments may feel the chill more quickly, so a couple of cosy items go a long way without overloading your suitcase. For regional travel, don’t forget mosquito protection - baby-safe repellent, netting and lightweight long sleeves can make evenings outdoors much more comfortable.

KEEPING YOUR COOL

Travelling with a baby is less about having every item and more about having the right mindset. Babies are adaptable and most challenges can be solved with flexibility and a calm approach. Parents often discover that their baby thrives with fewer distractions and more closeness during travel.

So next time you’re tempted to pack the entire nursery - pause. Ask yourself if this will genuinely make the journey easier, or is it just a “What if?" More often than not, you’ll find that travelling lighter brings not only less baggage but also a more enjoyable, stress-free holiday with your little one!

HOME & GARDEN

Tips to design a soothing bedroom for your toddler and how air quality affects your fertility.

This new editorial campaign investigates the effect of clean or polluted air on fertility outcomes.

CPI Industry, publishers of Climate Control Middle East magazine on the HVACR industry since 2005, launched an editorial campaign, titled ‘IEQ & Fertility’. Dr Iyad-AlAttar, independent indoor air quality (IAQ) and air filtration consultant, who straddles the science and engineering of air filtration approaches and broader IAQ measures, will helm the project, which aims to build a strong case on the indispensable nature of indoor air quality and other IEQ features for the success of IVF procedures, a longstanding topic pregnant with emotion.

THE POLLUTION LINK

The growing scientific evidence on the adverse effects of air pollution on fertility demands urgent attention, Dr Al-Attar says. “While the challenges are substantialencompassing scientific complexities, funding scarcity, economic resistance, political inertia and public awareness deficits - the potential

Silica particulates captured by a typical air filter used in the HVAC air-handling unit in an IVF clinic.

of air filtration technologies offers a tangible pathway for protection,” he tells us. “I am proud to be addressing the IEQ and fertility nexus, in collaboration with Climate Control Middle East and CPI Industry, through an upcoming focused campaign on this missioncritical topic, and I invite government organisations, research institutions and industry leaders to join this timely initiative.”

The success of the mission will require a global initiative that leverages interdisciplinary research, increased funding, robust governance, comprehensive monitoring and sustained public awareness campaigns to ensure cleaner air for current and future generations, Dr Al-Attar says.

‘IEQ AND FERTILITY’ EDITORIAL CAMPAIGN

Over the years, Climate Control Middle East has produced several editorial campaigns, notably ‘IEQ in Schools’, ‘IEQ in Healthcare’, ‘District Cooling’ and the ongoing ‘Refrigerants Review’. Continuing the journalistic tradition, ‘IEQ and Fertility’ will aim to raise awareness among the public, policymakers and the scientific community

about the importance of IEQ in reproductive health and the need for further research and regulatory considerations.

The campaign will entail conducting comprehensive interviews with scientists from the fields of IEQ, IVF and human infertility to highlight the nexus among them. The campaign will also include organising workshops, seminars, awareness programmes and a dedicated conference to disseminate research findings and nurture collaboration among various fields - such as building design, urban planning and city design. Furthermore, it will include publishing a newsletter and peer-reviewed articles, and developing evidence-based guidelines.

“A campaign such as this touches a chord with couples wanting to raise a family and, at the same time, with scientists and IVF specialists long frustrated by middling success percentages,” says Surendar Balakrishnan, Editor of Climate Control Middle East. “Given the correlation between IEQ and fertility, uncompromisingly incorporating IEQ features in laboratories, procedure-rooms and other indoor spaces that couples inhabit could usher in greater reproductive health and a higher success rate with IVF procedures.”

CREATING A CALM BEDROOM FOR YOUR TODDLER

Toddlers can find sleep tricky and their bedrooms play a huge role in how relaxed they feel. Here’s how to create a calm, soothing space that supports rest and routine.

If you’ve ever spent an evening coaxing a very awake toddler into bed, you’re not alone. For little ones, winding down isn’t always easy, no matter how tired they are. They might resist bedtime, wake in the middle of the night or take what feels like forever to settle. While routines are key, there’s another factor that’s just as important but often overlooked - their bedroom.

The space where your child sleeps can either help them relax or keep them buzzing long after the lights are out. Happily, creating this environment doesn’t require a complete overhaul or expensive décor. Small changes, thoughtful organisation and attention to sensory details can make a big difference in helping your toddler wind down and sleep better. Let’s delve in!

CHOOSE SOOTHING COLOURS

Colour can quietly influence how calm - or not - a room feels. Muted, nature-inspired

tones like pale blues, soft greens, warm greys or creamy neutrals tend to be the most restful. Brighter shades have their place but can be overstimulating when it’s time to wind down.

If your toddler loves colour (and let’s be honest, many do!), you don’t have to banish it completely. Try adding personality through wall decals, fun prints or even a small gallery of their favourite characters. Keeping the main palette soft while adding playful accents strikes the perfect balance - calm, but still theirs.

A ‘WIND-DOWN’ ZONE

A bedtime routine works best when the room itself helps cue your child to slow down. With this in mind, try and carve out a small, cosy corner that signals it’s time to relax. A mini bookshelf for favourite bedtime stories, a comfy chair for snuggly reading, or a soft, low lamp all help set the scene.

Consistency is the main thing here. Doing the same steps, in the same space, every evening gives toddlers a sense of security. Over time, that quiet corner becomes their cue that playtime is over, and sleep is on its way.

THE RIGHT LIGHT

Lighting can make or break bedtime. Bright, overhead lights can feel harsh and make it harder for your child to switch off. Instead, opt for soft, layered lighting - a dimmable bedside lamp, a gentle nightlight or even a string of fairy lights to create a warm glow.

Look for bulbs that cast a warm, yellow tone rather than cool, white light as this helps the body naturally produce melatonin, the hormone that supports sleep. And, as tempting as tablets or TV might be during those pre-bedtime minutes, keeping screens out of the bedroom is a game-changer. Blue light stimulates the brain, making it much harder for little ones to drift off.

CONTROL THE CLUTTER

It’s hard to relax in a space that feels chaotic and toddlers are no exception. Too many toys, piles of books, or clothes scattered everywhere can make winding down a challenge. The fix is usually some wellchosen smart storage. Low shelves, open baskets and labelled boxes make it easy to keep things organised and help toddlers learn to tidy up too.

Toy rotation can also be a lifesaver - where you keep a few favourites accessible and store the rest. Not only does this keep distractions to a minimum at bedtime, but it also keeps playtime fresh and exciting during the day.

CHOOSE COMFORT

Soft, breathable bedding and a supportive mattress set the foundation for good sleep.

Toddlers often find comfort in a particular blanket or soft toy, so let them choose one or two items that make them feel safe.

Less is more here, because an overstuffed bed can feel cluttered and overwhelming. A single favourite teddy or a cosy blanket is enough to provide that sense of security without turning bedtime into a battle over which stuffed animal gets a spot.

SOUNDS AND SCENTS

Gentle sounds can work wonders for light sleepers. A white noise machine, a soft lullaby playlist, or even the hum of a fan can help mask street noise or the sounds of siblings in other rooms.

For some children, calming scents can also help. A drop or two of lavender or chamomile in a diffuser or a lightly scented pillow spray can create a sense of calm -

just be sure the products you use are safe for young children.

MAKE IT MULTI-PURPOSE

A toddler’s bedroom should feel just as inviting during the day as it does at night. During daylight hours, it’s a space for play, creativity, and exploration. When evening rolls around, it should gently transition into a place of rest.

If possible, keep noisy, high-energy toys in a separate area and opt for quieter activities in the bedroom. Over time, your toddler will begin to understand that this space is specialplayful during the day, restful at night.

INVOLVE YOUR TODDLER

Even the youngest children appreciate having a say in their space. So, let them choose their bedding pattern, a nightlight or a fun piece of wall art. These small decisions give them a sense of ownership and comfort, making the room truly feel like theirs.

This involvement can also build responsibility in small ways as you encourage them to help put toys away, choose the bedtime book or turn on their nightlight. These little rituals help create a sense of independence and make bedtime smoother for everyone.

MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY

At the heart of any calm bedroom is a consistent routine. The same steps, in the same order, every evening send a powerful message to your toddler’s brain - it’s time to rest. When paired with a room designed for comfort and calm, those small, repeated actions help bedtime become less of a battle and more of a natural, peaceful transition.

A thoughtfully arranged bedroom won’t magically solve every bedtime struggle, but it sets the stage for calmer nights and more restful sleep. With soothing colours, soft lighting, a clutter-free space, and consistent routines, you can create a sleep-friendly environment that feels safe, cosy, and comforting.

These simple changes add up, turning the bedroom into a true sanctuary, a place where toddlers can relax, recharge and wake ready to embrace another busy day. After all, when bedtime is easier, the whole family feels the difference!

Building trust between canines and kids, and how to care for your pet year round!

DOG SAFETY FOR KIDS

Dogs and children can be the best of friends, but it’s important to teach little ones how to interact safely. Here’s how to build trust and avoid common mishaps.

For many families, a dog is more than a pet - they’re a playmate, a protector and part of the family. When children grow up with dogs, they often develop good empathy, responsibility and confidence. But as heartwarming as those bonds are, safety always comes first! Children, especially younger ones, don’t always understand a dog’s body language, and what feels like play to a child might feel threatening to a dog. The good news is that with a little guidance, children and dogs can live together happily and safely.

RESPECTFUL INTRODUCTIONS

When introducing a child to a dog, whether it’s your family pet or a friend’s, the golden rule is calm and gentle behaviour. Encourage children to approach slowly and let the dog sniff their hand first. They should avoid rushing in, hugging tightly or grabbing, as these can overwhelm or frighten even the most patient dog.

DOG BODY LANGUAGE

Children should be taught to recognise the signs that a dog needs space. Ears pinned back, tail tucked, growling or showing teeth all mean “back

off.” On the flip side, a relaxed stance and wagging tail usually signal that a dog is comfortable. Making a game of “reading the dog’s mood” can help children learn these cues in a fun, memorable way.

BOUNDARIES FOR PLAY

While dogs and children often love to play together, certain boundaries are important. Tug-of-war games can encourage unwanted behaviours, so stick to fetch, supervised running or gentle ball play. Children should also know never to disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping or in its bed - these are times when even the friendliest dogs can become protective.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPERVISION

One of the most effective ways to keep kids and dogs safe is simple - it’s supervision. Young children should never be left alone with a dog, no matter how trustworthy the pet. Parents can step in if play becomes too boisterous, preventing accidents before they happen.

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY

Safety also comes from involvement. Allowing children to help with feeding, brushing or walking their dog (with adult guidance) is a fast track for growing responsibility and respect. It helps them see the dog not just as a playmate, but as a living being with needs and feelings.

MIND THE HEAT

Here, the hot climate adds another layer of safety. Remind children that dogs should never be walked in the midday sun and always need fresh water. Teaching kids to feel the pavement with their hand before a walk is a simple way for them to understand how hot it might be on their dog’s paws.

A LASTING FRIENDSHIP

With a little preparation and clear rules, children and dogs can enjoy a safe, loving relationship that benefits everyone. By teaching respect and reading signals well, families can create a space where kids form deep bonds and where trust grows - the foundation for a dog-child friendship that truly lasts.

SEASONAL PET CARE TIPS ALL FAMILIES SHOULD KNOW

Here are essential tips to keep dogs, cats and small animals happy, healthy and safe year round.

Pets bring endless love and laughter to our homes, but living in the UAE means pet care comes with its own set of seasonal considerations. Between soaring summer heat, dusty long days and surprisingly cool winter nights, our furry (and feathered!) friends need a little extra care to stay safe, happy and healthy all year round.

Just as we swap wardrobes, adjust routines and tweak our diets with the weather, our pets need similar seasonal check-ins. A few mindful adjustments can make all the difference and ensure that your pets thrive, no matter the month.

SUMMER HEAT

Summer in Dubai is no joke - and our pets feel it too. With high temperatures, overheating and dehydration are real risks, especially for short-nosed dog breeds like pugs and bulldogs or cats with thicker coats.

As such, always ensure your pets have constant access to fresh, filtered water and a cool, shaded space. Also, it’s better to schedule walks early in the morning or after sunset when the pavements aren’t scorching, as hot ground can burn paw pads in seconds. For smaller pets in cages or enclosures, move them indoors during peak heat and add cooling tricks like frozen water bottles or small fans to keep their space comfortable.

And if you’re heading out, never leave pets alone in the car - even with the windows cracked, temperatures can rise dangerously in minutes. Instead, keep them cool at home with cooling mats or gel pads, which work wonders, especially for dogs.

Lastly, don’t skip grooming - regular brushing removes excess fur, reduces heat retention and helps prevent irritation caused by sweat, dust, and sand. A frozen treat, like pet-safe ice cubes or frozen fruit, can also make summer a little more bearable!

AUTUMN AND WINTER

When the summer heat finally loosens its grip, autumn and winter open up a world of outdoor possibilities. With cooler evenings and sunny but mild days, this is the perfect season for longer walks, playful park visits, and even a little basic training in the garden.

Just remember, even cooler weather can come with challenges. Wind and dry air often carry dust and fine sand that can irritate sensitive eyes and noses. So, make a habit of gently wiping down your pet’s face, paws and fur after outdoor play to prevent itching and discomfort.

Shorter days don’t mean less fun as evening play sessions indoors help keep pets engaged and active. This is a great time of year to strengthen socialisation, explore new shaded spaces or even take short hikes. The moderate temperatures mean pets can be more active for longer without the risk of overheating.

SPRING ALLERGIES

Spring in Dubai often brings gusty winds and bursts of pollen from urban greenery, and our pets feel the effects just as much as we do. Sneezing, watery eyes, and itchy skin are common signs of allergies in both dogs and cats during this season.

Daily grooming becomes even more important because it removes dust, prevents tangles and helps you spot any irritation early. Wiping down your furry friend’s paws and coats after walks can also limit the amount of dust they track indoors. On particularly dusty days or during sandstorms, it might be a good idea to keep windows shut and limit outdoor exposure.

For outdoor-loving cats, perhaps consider a balcony enclosure or window perch. These spaces give them the fresh air they crave without overexposure to allergens and dust. And, as always, keep flea and tick prevention consistent - pests are a year-round reality here.

YEAR-ROUND HEALTH CHECKS

Seasonal routines are key, but there are also year-round essentials every pet parent should stick to. Keep vaccinations up to date, schedule regular deworming and maintain a flea and tick prevention plan.

Routine grooming - brushing, dental care and nail trims - keeps pets comfortable and healthy. Pay attention to subtle changes in behaviour, appetite, or energy levels. Even small shifts can indicate that something’s not right, and catching issues early makes treatment far easier.

A quick seasonal vet check is a proactive way to ensure everything is on track and can give you peace of mind heading into the next season.

FEEDING FOR THE SEASONS

Your pet’s dietary needs often change with the weather. In summer, when activity levels dip, lighter meals and plenty of hydration will keep their energy balanced. In winter, slightly more calories might be needed, especially for active dogs who are out enjoying the cooler weather.

Small pets - like rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters - need special attention too. It’s best to keep bedding fresh and dry during humid spells, and ensure their cages are well-ventilated in summer.

If you’re unsure about portion sizes or supplements, your vet can recommend seasonal tweaks that support your pet’s unique needs.

PLAY AND SOCIALISATION

Pets aren’t just physical beings - they need mental enrichment and social connection all year round. Dogs thrive with short, regular training sessions, while cats enjoy the challenge of puzzle feeders or the thrill of a climbing frame.

When the weather isn’t ideal, try short bursts of indoor play - think hideand-seek, scent games or obstacle courses for dogs, and feather toys or window-watching stations for cats.

It might be helpful to rotate toys every few weeks to keep things fresh and remember that socialisation matters, too. Safe, shaded meetups with other pets or calm introductions to new environments help build confidence and reduce anxiety.

With a small investment of time and attention, you will be well able to keep your pets happy, safe, and healthy all year round - and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re giving them the best possible care. After all, a happy pet makes for a happy home, no matter the weather outside!

SAY HELLO TO AMOUAGE’S LOVE DELIGHT BODY LINE

This month, I’m indulging in the sweet, honeyed elegance of House of Amouage’s Love Delight, the perfume that won hearts when it launched last year. For those of us who fell for its playful, warm notes, I’m thrilled to share that it’s now been extended into a trio of body care treats!

Bath & Shower Gel

The Bath & Shower Gel is an easy way to elevate your regular shower. It creates a soft, moisturising foam that cleanses your skin without drying it out, leaving it feeling gorgeously smooth and supple. Frankincense essential oil gives it a subtle richness, while hints of ginger and rose water mirror the perfume’s signature scent. A quick spritz and a few minutes under warm water feels like a small, fragrant escape.

EDITOR'S BEAUTY PICKS

Body Lotion

Infused with a generous dose of glycerin, this body lotion is a light but nourishing cream that really hydrates your skin. Frankincense brings out the more floral and almond-like tones of Love Delight, with hints of cherry sweetness. Applied after a shower or before bed, it’s a simple way to layer your favourite scent while keeping skin soft and comfortable.

Hair Perfume

With a higher proportion of perfume concentrate than most hair scents, Love Delight’s hair mist creates a fragrant aura around you. Pro-Vitamin B5 and Resisthyal help maintain softness and shine, while frankincense emphasises the vanillalike warmth of the Eau de Parfum. Spritzed lightly, it leaves hair subtly scented and touchably soft.

What I love about this collection is its seamless crossing of luxury and ritual, lifting your everyday self-care into something a little bit decadent. The careful use of frankincense ties the line to Omani heritage, while the playful sweetness of Love Delight means it’s easily wearable everyday - ideal!

Available at leading Amouage boutiques and online.

This month I’m also highlighting Biologique Recherche, the Parisian skincare brand that has been quietly influencing beauty for almost 50 years. Combining scientific precision with a personal approach, the brand treats the skin as an organ connected to the whole body, and every product feels considered and purposeful.

I adore the brand’s facial products, each of which are designed to address specific concerns.
