Hidden signs of stress in kids; the impact of baby massage; handling pregnancy tiredness and more!

THE LINK BETWEEN SCREEN TIME AND SLEEP

We take a closer look at the connection between screens and children’s sleep, as well as healthier bedtime routines.

In our modern world, screens are everywhere. From televisions and tablets to smartphones and game consoles, screens have become a central part of daily life – not just for adults, but for children too. While technology certainly has its place, many parents are starting to ask an important question - what impact is all this screen time having on our children’s sleep?

It’s a topic that has gained more attention in recent years, and rightly so. Sleep is one of the cornerstones of a child’s development, affecting everything from their mood and behaviour to their physical health and academic performance. Yet, many kids are struggling to get the rest they need - and screen time could be playing a bigger role than we realise.

WHY SLEEP MATTERS

Sleep isn’t just a chance for little ones to rest. It’s when their bodies grow, their brains process information and their emotional batteries recharge. Most children need anywhere from nine to twelve hours of sleep each night, depending on their age - but studies show that many aren’t reaching that target.

The consequences of poor sleep are more than just groggy mornings. Tired children are often more irritable, less focused and more prone to accidents or emotional outbursts. Over time, chronic sleep deprivation can actually lead to increased stress levels, weakened immunity and even struggles with memory and learning.

Lack of sleep also impacts their ability to regulate emotions and cope with everyday challenges, meaning small setbacks can quickly feel overwhelming. For school-aged children, this can affect friendships, classroom behaviour and even their motivation to learn. Simply put, well-rested children are generally happier, more resilient and better equipped to thrive.

In addition to these concerns, poor sleep habits in childhood can lead to long-term issues with sleep as adults. Developing a strong foundation now,

including regular routines and reduced screen time before bed, can set your child up for lifelong healthy sleep behaviours. Prevention is always easier than correction.

THE IMPACT OF SCREENS

Most people realise there is some kind of relationship between screen time and sleep, but what is really happening when we allow children to watch screens in the evening?

Disrupted body clock

Screens emit something called blue light, which is known to interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that signals to our bodies that it’s time to sleep. Melatonin naturally rises in the evening, helping us wind down but when children use screens late into the evening, their melatonin levels are suppressed, making it harder for them to feel sleepy.

This is especially true if kids are watching something fast-paced or interactive, like

video games or action-packed shows. The stimulation - both visual and mental - makes it tricky for their brains to switch off and settle down for the night.

No wind-down time

Before screens took over, bedtime often meant cuddles, a warm bath and a story. These rituals don’t just make children feel safe and secure - they also help their bodies transition into sleep mode. When screens take the place of these calming routines, children miss out on vital cues that it’s time to rest.

Emotional overstimulation

Whether it’s an intense video game or a dramatic storyline, what your child watches before bed can stir up big emotions and thoughts. Fear, excitement or even confusion can linger long after the screen is turned off, making it difficult for little minds to switch off.

Interrupted sleep

Some children keep their devices in bed with them, sneaking in a quick video or chat when they should be fast asleep. Even if they manage to doze off with a screen nearby, the risk of notifications, buzzing or lights flashing can disrupt their sleep cycle and prevent deep, restorative rest.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

If screen time is becoming a bedtime battle in your household, you’re certainly not alone. However, there are plenty of small but effective changes you can make to help your child get the rest they need.

Screen curfew

Experts recommend turning off all screens at least one hour before bedtime - two hours, if possible. This gives the brain a chance to wind down and allows melatonin levels to rise naturally. Aim to replace that screen time with more present, intentional activities like reading, puzzles or quiet play.

Screen-free bedrooms

Keeping screens out of the bedroom can help kids’ brains associate their sleep space with rest, not entertainment. If your child uses a screen for reading, consider switching to physical books in the evening or using a dedicated e-reader that doesn’t emit blue light.

Consistent bedtime routine

Routines are powerful. A predictable, soothing bedtime routine helps signal to your child that it’s time to relax. This might include a hot shower, brushing teeth, a cosy story and a few minutes of quiet chat about the day. Keeping bedtime consistent, even on weekends, supports a healthy sleep rhythm that will help their brain and body get the most efficient rest.

Set healthy habits

Children notice more than we think. If they see you scrolling through your phone in bed or watching late-night TV, they’re likely to find that normal and do the same. It’s much better

to set an example by putting your own screens away in the evenings and prioritising restful activities. It will actually help you too!

Use technology wisely

Not all screen time is created equal. Educational programmes, creative games or video chats with family can all be valuable. However, it’s all about timing and balance. So, use built-in parental controls or apps that limit screen usage automatically at certain times of day and be firm with the boundaries you put in place.

Creating a designated “screen-free” zone in the home - like the dining table or bedrooms - can further support better habits. These physical boundaries serve as daily reminders that not all spaces are meant for technology, helping your child separate play time from rest time.

A BALANCED APPROACH

It’s easy to feel guilty as a parent when screen time creeps in - especially on long days or during school holidays - but the goal isn’t to

eliminate screens entirely. Instead, it’s about finding a balance that supports your child’s development and doesn’t cost them their sleep. By being more intentional with how and when screens are used, you can help your son or daughter maintain a healthy sleep routine - and that’s something every parent can feel good about.

KEEPING PERSPECTIVE

Every child is different. Some may be more sensitive to screen exposure, while others seem less affected. The key is to observe how your own child responds and adjust your parenting accordingly. Are they falling asleep quickly, staying asleep through the night and waking up refreshed? Or are they struggling to settle, waking up groggy or showing signs of sleep deprivation when it comes to focus?

If you’re concerned, it’s always a good idea to speak with your doctor or a sleep specialist. They can help rule out other issues and guide you towards a plan that works for your family. At the end of the day, we all want our children to thrive and sleep is a vital part of that journey. Even when it’s hard, know that by creating healthy boundaries around screen time, you’re giving your little one the best chance to rest, grow and wake up ready to take on the world.

HOW TO MANAGE PREGNANCY FATIGUE NATURALLY

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it can also be exhausting! If you’re constantly battling tiredness, you’re not alone. We explore the natural ways to help you feel more like yourself again.

There’s a special kind of tiredness that comes with growing a baby. It’s more than just feeling sleepy - it can feel like your body is made of lead. Pregnancy fatigue, especially in the first and third trimesters, is completely normal but it can also be incredibly frustrating, particularly if you’ve still got work, children or day-to-day responsibilities to manage.

The good news is that there are natural and nurturing ways to help address your pregnancy

fatigue, and with just a few thoughtful changes to your routine, you can support your body and reclaim a bit more energy along the way.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

First and foremost, give yourself permission to slow down. Pregnancy is a full-time job on its own and your body is doing something truly incredible - building a brand new human. It’s no wonder you’re tired!

Rather than trying to soldier on through the day as if nothing has changed, aim to work with your body rather than against it. If you’re flagging in the afternoon, see if you can squeeze in a short nap, a lie down with your eyes closed or a quick meditation, even for just ten minutes. Don’t dismiss the power of rest - short pauses like these can help reset your energy levels and make the rest of the day more manageable.

NOURISH TO FLOURISH

It might sound obvious, but eating well really does make a difference. Pregnancy places lots of increased nutritional demands on the body, and without enough fuel, tiredness will only intensify. Try to focus on foods that provide you with steady, long-lasting energy rather than those that spike your blood sugar and leave you crashing shortly after.

Whole foods

Whole grains, like oats and brown rice, leafy greens, nuts, seeds and protein-rich foods such as eggs, yoghurt or lentils are great choices. Try to eat little and often (which can help manage nausea too) and keep healthy snacks like fruit, nut butters or oatcakes to hand. If mornings are particularly hard, a smoothie packed with spinach, banana, nut butter and oat milk can be a gentle but energising start to your day.

Iron levels

Iron levels are also something to watch. Iron deficiency (anaemia) is common in pregnancy and a major contributor to fatigue. You can test your levels with your doctor over the course of your pregnancy, and they may recommend an iron supplement if it’s needed. In the meantime,

try to include iron-rich foods like red meat, lentils, spinach and fortified cereals - and pair them with vitamin C to boost your body’s absorption. This could be fresh orange juice, white potatoes, tomatoeswhatever you like best!

STAY HYDRATED

Even mild dehydration can leave us feeling sluggish and headachy and during pregnancy, your blood volume increases significantly, which means you need more fluids than usual. It’s best to sip water steadily throughout the day if you can. Herbal teas like rooibos or ginger can also be comforting and hydrating alternatives if you find cool water a challenge to keep on top of.

If water feels a bit dull but you don’t enjoy hot tea, you could try adding slices of cucumber, lemon or berries for a gentle, refreshing flavour that might tempt you to drink more. Coconut water is another natural option packed with electrolytes - perfect for days when you’re feeling extra worn out.

MOVE GENTLY

Exercise might feel like the last thing on your mind when you’re struggling to stay awake, but gentle movement can actually boost your energy levels. It doesn’t have to be anything intense - think stretching, prenatal yoga, swimming or a short walk around the block. These activities are great for increasing your circulation, improving your mood and giving you a better sleep at night.

Try to pick a time of day when you naturally feel a little more energised. For some women, that’s mid-morning; for others, it might be after lunch. The goal isn’t to exhaust yourself, but to support your physical and mental wellbeing. So, listen to your body and stop if anything feels off.

GET OUTSIDE

Never underestimate the power of fresh air and natural daylight. Exposure to daylight, especially in the morning, helps regulate your body’s circadian rhythm, which can improve both your energy during the day and your sleep at night.

Even if it’s just sitting in the garden with a decaf coffee or popping out to post a letter, spending time outside every day can help

lift your mood and ease that foggy, sluggish feeling that sometimes lingers during pregnancy.

PROTECT YOUR SLEEP

Ironically, pregnancy fatigue can often be worsened by poor sleep. Whether it’s frequent toilet trips, vivid dreams or general discomfort, getting a decent night’s rest can become a challenge as your pregnancy progresses.

To support better sleep, give a calming evening routine a go - something that signals to your body it’s time to wind down. A warm (not hot) bath, a gentle stretch, lavender oil on your pillow or a short meditation can all help ease you into rest. Also, do your best to make your sleep space as comfortable as possible, as supportive pillows, cool bedding and soft lighting all make a difference too.

And lastly, it’s fine to go to bed ridiculously early. If you’re exhausted by eight o’clock, tuck yourself in and close your eyes - your body will thank you for it.

PRIORITISE WHAT MATTERS

Tiredness often feels worse when we’re mentally overloaded so let go of non-essential tasks where possible, ask for help when you can and simplify your to-do list. This is the time to lean on your support network,

whether that’s a partner, friend or family member, and focus your energy on what really matters.

It’s also a good idea to be gentle with your expectations of yourself. You don’t need to “achieve” anything during pregnancy beyond looking after yourself and your growing baby. If all you did today was rest, eat and breathethat’s actually enough.

ASK THE DOCTOR

Lastly, if your lack of energy feels extreme or doesn’t improve at all with rest and healthy habits, it’s worth mentioning it to your doctor. There are medical causes of fatigue, such as thyroid issues or low iron levels, that might need some extra support. It’s always better to ask and rule things out than to suffer in silence.

ONE DAY AT A TIME

Pregnancy tiredness can feel all-consuming at times, but it won’t last forever. By giving your body what it needs, whether that’s rest, nourishment, gentle movement or compassion, you’re setting yourself up for a healthier, more balanced experience.

So if your eyes are heavy and you’re running low on energy, remember you’re growing a life. That’s hard work - and you’re doing brilliantly.

THE HIDDEN SIGNS OF STRESS IN CHILDREN

How to spot the quiet symptoms of distress in your child and ways to help them feel better.

When we think of stress, we often picture adults juggling too much at once - tight deadlines, bills to pay, not enough hours in the day. What we sometimes forget is that children, too, can experience stress - and they often show it in ways that are easy to overlook.

Stress in kids doesn’t always look the same as it does in grown-ups. It can be quiet, stealthy and even mistaken for something else entirely. That’s why it’s so important for us as parents to be tuned into the subtler signs that our little ones might be struggling.

CHILDHOOD STRESS

It might seem surprising, but even young children can feel the weight of stress. The sources may be different from ours - from school pressure, friendship drama or family changes to absorbing our own adult worries. However, the feelings are just as real.

Kids don’t always have the language or emotional maturity to express what they’re feeling, which means their stress often bubbles up in other ways, through behaviour, body or mood.

SIGNS TO WATCH FOR

While every child is different, here are some of the more subtle indicators that your child might be feeling stressed.

Changes in sleep

If your child suddenly starts having trouble falling asleep, wakes up frequently during the night or begins having nightmares, stress could be the culprit. Likewise, sleeping too much or seeming unusually tired during the day can also be signs their mind is working overtime.

Physical complaints

As with adults, stress in little ones can also manifest physically.

Repeated stomach aches, headaches, muscle tension or even nausea with no clear medical cause are all common indicators. Little ones might say, “I don’t feel well” when what they’re really feeling is overwhelmed.

Ups and downs

Increased irritability, frequent tearfulness, mood swings or sudden outbursts can all be emotional red flags to be aware of. Stressed kids may seem more clingy, withdrawn or easily upset than usual, even over small things.

Behaviour regression

If your child suddenly starts wetting the bed, using baby talk or showing separation anxiety that you thought had passed, it’s wise to heed these warning signs. It might be their way of seeking comfort or security during a stressful time.

Difficulty concentrating

Struggling to focus on homework, zoning out during conversations or forgetting things more frequently may mean your child’s brain is preoccupied with other worries.

Eating habits

Just like adults, some kids eat more when they’re stressed, while others lose their appetite completely. A sudden change in how much your child is eating or what kinds of food they’re craving can be a signal that something’s off.

Avoidance or withdrawal

Is your child suddenly reluctant to go to school, see friends or take part in activities they used to enjoy? Avoidance is a classic sign of stress, especially if your son or daughter can’t explain why they’re pulling back.

Perfectionism or overachievement

It may seem counterintuitive, but stress can sometimes lead to overperforming. If your child is pushing themselves too hard to do everything “just right” or becoming anxious about minor mistakes, they may be internalising pressure that’s causing more harm than good.

THE ROOT CAUSE

Understanding the source of stress is the first step in easing your child’s worries. Some of the most common stressors for children include:

ü School pressure: Tests, homework, social dynamics or fear of failure

ü Family changes: Divorce, a new sibling, moving house or financial strain

ü Friendship challenges: Bullying, exclusion or navigating social rules

ü Overscheduling: Too many activities and not enough downtime

ü Global worries: Exposure to news, climate anxiety or adult conversations

HOW TO HELP

What can we do when we suspect our child is under stress?

Create a safe space

Encourage your child to talk about their feelings by asking gentle, open-ended questions like, “How are things going at school?” or “You’ve seemed a bit quiet lately - do you want to talk?” Sometimes just having a chance to be heard without judgement is the biggest relief.

Hear them

Rather than brushing off their worries with a quick “You’ll be fine,” try your best to acknowledge their feelings. Sentences like, “That sounds like it was really tough” or “It makes sense you’d feel upset about that” help little ones feel seen and understood.

Bring back routine

Consistency is calming to us all, but it’s especially helpful to kids when they feel anxious or stressed. Regular meal times, bedtimes and predictable routines give worried children a sense of stability when their inner world feels chaotic.

Play and movement

Play is a natural stress-reliever. Whether it’s imaginative games, art, outdoor adventures or just running around the garden, movement and play are great worry-busting tactics that will help your child release any tension they’re holding.

No adult worries

Children don’t need to carry adult burdens. Try to keep grown-up conversations about money, conflict or world events out of earshot when possible as kids are more canny than we often realise! If your child does overhear something, offer a simple, age-appropriate explanation to ease their concerns.

Practise calm together

Deep breathing, mindfulness activities or even just five minutes of a head rub can help soothe an anxious child. You don’t need to be a meditation expert by any means - even dimming the lights, putting on soft music and lying quietly together can work wonders.

GETTING SUPPORT

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, your child may continue to struggle. If their signs of stress persist or begin to interfere with everyday life, it might be time to reach out. Your doctor, school counsellor or a qualified child therapist can help you and your little one navigate their worries with care and confidence.

Stress is a normal part of life, even for kids, but when it goes unnoticed or unaddressed, it can quietly chip away at their wellbeing. As parents, we may not be able to shield our children from every challenge, but we can be their safe place by staying attuned to the more hidden signs and offering gentle, consistent support.

The best part? It doesn’t require fancy products or overwhelming changes. Just a little love, attention and some delicious, nourishing foods - because when our little ones’ tummies are happy, the rest of them is too!

THE BENEFITS OF BABY MASSAGE

We explore the simple, soothing ritual that nurtures your connection and supports your baby’s development.

From their very first breath, babies are learning about the world through touch. It’s how they feel safe, soothed and connected to you. When it comes to deepening that bond, baby massage can be a powerful and beautiful way to communicate love, comfort and care. Baby massage isn’t just about creating cosy moments (though it certainly does that). This gentle practice can also support your little one’s physical, emotional and cognitive development, all while giving you both a calm and grounding pause in your day.

BONDING AND ATTACHMENT

One of the most lovely benefits of baby massage is how it strengthens the bond between you and your baby. Skin-to-skin contact releases oxytocin, sometimes called the “love hormone”, in both of you, promoting plenty of feelings of trust and connection.

As you gently stroke your baby’s arms, legs or tummy, you’re not just helping them relax. You’re speaking to them in a language they instinctively understand - touch. Over time,

this physical closeness helps build a secure attachment, giving your son or daughter a strong emotional foundation for their future.

SOOTHING SUPERPOWER

Massage can be especially helpful for settling fussy babies or winding down before naps and bedtime. The gentle rhythm of your hands helps calm their young nervous system and lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone), making it easier for your baby to relax and sleep more soundly.

Some parents find that a regular massage routine in the evening, after bath time or before the last feed, signals to their baby that it’s time to rest, creating a peaceful transition into sleep.

TUMMY TROUBLES AND TEETHING

Many babies experience digestive discomfort in the early months - from trapped wind and colic to constipation. Certain massage techniques, like gentle clockwise strokes on the tummy or “bicycling” their legs, can help stimulate their digestion and ease any discomfort.

Similarly, when your baby is teething and a bit unsettled, a gentle head, jaw or back massage can offer natural relief and comfort - plus, it’s a fantastic way to be present with them during a tricky time.

BODY AWARENESS

Massage helps babies become more aware of their bodies, supporting their coordination and muscle development. Through touch, they start to recognise where their arms and legs are, how they move and what different sensations feel like.

Even newborns benefit from this kind of gentle stimulation - it can improve their circulation and encourage some early movement and flexibility.

DOUBLE THE BENEFIT

It’s best to check with your healthcare provider before starting any massage if your baby was born prematurely, has health concerns or any skin sensitivities.

Finally, baby massage isn’t just for your baby - it can be incredibly grounding for you as well. It invites you to slow down, tune in and be present with your child in a peaceful, loving way. In the whirlwind of early parenthood, those quiet, connected moments can mean everything.

PARENTING

Our winners from the Mother, Baby & Child Awards 2025; responding to your child’s boredom and more!

HELPING KIDS HANDLE FRIENDSHIPS AND SOCIAL CONFLICTS

From playground squabbles to friendship fallouts, social struggles are part of growing up. How can you help your child learn to navigate them with confidence?

Friendships are a huge part of childhood. Whether it’s the classmate kids sit with every day, the neighbour they build dens with or the cousin they see on weekends, children are constantly learning how to connect, share, compromise and resolve disagreements.

However, friendship isn’t always straightforward. One week, your child’s best friend might be glued to their side, and the next, they’re declaring they’ll never speak to each other again. As parents, it can be hard to know when to step in and when to let kids figure it out - or how to give the right kind of guidance without overstepping.

The good news is, these ups and downs aren’t just normal - they’re actually important. Social conflicts offer children valuable opportunities to develop their emotional intelligence, build up resilience and practise their empathy. The key is in helping little ones feel supported, heard and equipped with tools to handle the bumps along the way.

VALIDATE THEIR FEELINGS

Whether it’s a playground disagreement or being left out of a birthday party, your child’s social struggles are very real to them - even if they seem minor from an adult perspective. It’s best to resist the urge to brush it off. Instead, meet kids where they are and try to acknowledge what they’re feeling. Saying things like “That sounds really upsetting” or “I can see why you’d feel left

out” are great for validating their emotions, showing your son or daughter that their experiences matter and that it’s safe to talk to you. That sense of safety is so important, especially as they grow older and the issues become more complex.

DON’T RUSH TO FIX IT

As parents, our instinct is often to jump in and solve the problem. We want to call the other child’s mother, email the teacher or come up with a perfect script for our little one to follow next time it happens. However, part of growing up is learning how to navigate these tricky moments independently - with support, but not a rescue mission.

In place of offering solutions straight away, you might like to try asking openended questions to help your child reflect. Discussing if there’s something your child

would like to say to their friend or if they can think of anything that would help next time are good starting points. These kinds of conversations gently guide kids towards problem-solving and self-awareness, rather than relying on adults to do it for them.

NAME WHAT’S GOING ON

Sometimes kids know they feel bad, but they can’t quite put their finger on why. Helping them develop emotional vocabulary makes it easier for them to process their experiences and respond with clarity. You might say sentences like, “It sounds like you felt excluded” or “Maybe she was feeling jealous and that’s why she acted that way.”

Understanding how we feel and increasing our language around emotions are all key ingredients for strong, healthy friendships, now and in the future.

NORMALISE UPS AND DOWNS

It’s helpful for children to understand that all relationships have highs and lows - and that it’s okay for friendships to change, grow or sometimes fade.

If your child is dealing with a friendship that’s shifting or ending, do your best to reassure them that it’s part of life and that it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with them. Encourage your child to think about what they need in a friend and how they can find new connections that make them feel good about themselves.

SET THE RIGHT TONE

Teaching kids how to express themselves clearly and kindly can make all the difference when it comes to resolving conflict. Children are like sponges and tend to copy what they hear, so aim to be intentional with your own

language. Small tweaks, like swapping “You made me feel…” for “I felt hurt when…” or using phrases like “Can we find a way that works for both of us?” will set a brilliant example for them.

LOOK FOR PATTERNS

While most social issues are part of the natural learning curve, it’s important to keep an eye out for patterns that suggest something more serious - like bullying, exclusion or toxic friendships.

If your son or daughter regularly feels anxious, withdrawn or upset after seeing certain friends, it might be time to dig a little deeper. If something doesn’t sit right, don’t be afraid to trust your instincts. Work with your child’s school if needed and let your little one know that they never have to stay in a friendship that makes them feel small, scared or unhappy.

ENCOURAGE A VARIETY OF FRIENDS

One way to reduce the impact of conflict with one particular friend is to help your child build a wider circle. Having different friends for different settings - school, sports clubs, neighbours or family - gives them more emotional security and lessens the pressure on one relationship.

You can support this by arranging playdates, encouraging group activities or simply talking about the different kinds of friendships people have. The more varied their social experiences, the more confident they’ll become in forming and maintaining relationships too.

PRAISE KINDNESS AND GRACE

When you see your child handling a social situation well, even in a small way, take the time to acknowledge it. Whether they apologised first, included someone new or tried to see things from another’s point of view, praise helps reinforce those skills. These moments build your little one’s self-esteem and show your child that their efforts to connect and be kind are valued and seen.

KNOW WHEN TO STEP IN

While giving your child independence is important, there are moments where adult involvement is necessary. If the issue is ongoing, escalating or having a significant impact on your child’s wellbeing, it’s okay to step in.

This might look like speaking to the class teacher to get a clearer picture of what’s happening. arranging a conversation with the other child’s parent, if appropriate or setting boundaries around certain friendships or social settings. Just be sure to involve your child in the process, so they don’t feel undermined or blindsided.

REMIND THEM THEY’RE NOT ALONE

Friendship struggles can feel isolating - especially for older children and teens, who might believe everyone else has it all figured out. Remind your child that it’s okay to have tricky days and that everyone goes through ups and downs in their relationships.

Share your own stories, too. Whether it’s a childhood best friend you lost touch with or a time you had to apologise after a falling out, showing your own social journey reminds your son or daughter that no one’s perfect - and we’re all learning as we go.

FRIENDSHIP IS A SKILL

Friendship might seem like something that just happens but the truth is, it’s a skill - one that takes practice, patience and a whole lot of support. By guiding your child through the emotional twists and turns of friendship, you’re helping them become more compassionate, confident and socially capable.

So the next time your little one comes to you in tears over a playground fallout or your teen rolls their eyes and mutters about friend drama, take a moment to see it as a teaching opportunity. With your help, they’ll not only get through it – they’ll grow from it.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR CHILD SAYS “I’M BORED”

Those two little words can drive even the most patient parent up the wall - but boredom isn’t always a bad thing.

It usually arrives just as you’ve sat down with a cup of tea or finally ticked off something from your to-do list - “I’m bored.” The phrase can feel like a challenge, a complaint and a demand all rolled into one and most of us are left scrambling to entertain, distract or solve the problem right there and then. However, what if boredom isn’t something to fix?

The truth is, boredom can be incredibly useful for children. It pushes them to use their imagination, explore their interests and learn how to enjoy their own company. In a world full of screens, schedules and constant stimulation,

having nothing to do for a moment can be just what they need. So, instead of rushing to fill every gap, here’s how to respond when your child declares they’re bored - and how to help them learn from it.

DON’T PANIC

It’s easy to feel like you’ve failed when your child complains of boredom, especially if you’ve worked hard to create a fun, stimulating home. Being bored doesn’t mean they’re neglected or that you’re doing anything wrong. In fact, it can be a healthy part of childhood.

Rather than springing into action, take a breath and reframe the moment. Think of boredom as an opportunity for creativity, curiosity and even a bit of problem-solving.

DON’T FIX IT

Instead of jumping in with solutions, try acknowledging how your child feels. Saying, “Ah, you’re feeling a bit bored?” or “That can be frustrating sometimes” shows your empathy without taking responsibility for fixing it.

It’s tempting to fill the silence with suggestions, but giving your child space to sit with their

boredom encourages them to find their own way out of it. You’re gently handing the baton back, with confidence that they’re more than capable of entertaining themselves.

A GENTLE NUDGE

If your child truly seems stuck or overwhelmed by the freedom, a light prompt can help get them going. Open-ended questions are brilliant for this! You could try:

• “What do you feel like creating?”

• “Is there something you’ve not played with in a while?”

• “Can you think of a challenge to set yourself?”

Another great option is to keep a simple ‘boredom jar’ at home - a collection of activities, prompts and ideas written on little slips of paper. When your child claims there’s nothing to do, they can dip in and choose one at random. Things like building a blanket fort, drawing a comic, trying a new Lego design, making up a dance or inventing a new game are all good starting points.

ENCOURAGE IMAGINATION

Unstructured play is where the magic happens. When children have the time and space to play freely, without instructions, rules or outcomes, their creativity flourishes.

If your little one struggles with open-ended play, it can help to create little invitations. These might be as simple as setting out a box of random objects (think pegs, string, cardboard, fabric scraps) or suggesting a loose theme like, “Can you make a secret spy kit?” or “What would a space hotel look like?”Sometimes all it takes is the right spark to turn a boring afternoon into an adventure.

LIMIT SCREENS

It’s no surprise that when kids are bored, their first request is usually a screen. While there’s nothing wrong with a bit of digital downtime, over-relying on screens can make it harder for children to tap into their own creativity.

Setting healthy limits around screen time (and sticking to them!) helps little ones learn to tolerate boredom without instantly reaching for a device. You can support this by making sure they have easy access to books, craft supplies, puzzles and toys that invite exploration.

REVISIT OLD FAVOURITES

Sometimes boredom is less about a lack of things to do and more about feeling uninspired by what’s already there. If your son or daughter has shelves of toys but insists there’s “nothing to do,” it might be time to rotate.

Try putting away a few things and reintroducing them a couple of weeks later, as the novelty will often reignite their interest. Similarly, you can reframe old activities by adding a twist - instead of just painting, suggest painting on cardboard or turning it into a treasure map. Think of it like rearranging the furniture – a fresh perspective can breathe new life into familiar things.

“GOOD BOREDOM”

Not all boredom needs to be solved with an activity. Some of the best ideas kids arrive at come after a bit of moaning, staring out of windows or wandering aimlessly around the house. That quiet lull can give their minds the space to wander and ignite new thoughts.

Rather than viewing boredom as a problem, it’s worth seeing it as a pause - a moment of stillness before something wonderful begins. Letting your child sit in that quiet for a bit (even if it makes them grumble) can lead to deeper creativity and emotional resilience.

INDEPENDENCE IS GOOD

Helping children learn how to manage their own boredom is a valuable life skill. When they realise they can shift their own mindset, come up with ideas and follow their curiosity, their confidence grows.

It’s wise to praise their initiative by saying things like, “You figured out what to do all by yourself - that’s brilliant!” or “I loved seeing the game you invented, tell me more about it.” These little boosts remind them that they have everything they need to handle a dull moment.

MAKE PEACE WITH BOREDOM

Boredom can feel uncomfortable - for us and for our children - but it’s a perfectly normal and even necessary part of life. It encourages creativity, builds resilience and teaches kids how to listen to their inner world.

So the next time you hear “I’m bored,” try not to see it as a call to arms. Take a breath, offer a calm response and remember - you’re not just managing a bored child, you’re raising a resourceful one. With a little space and patience, their next big idea might be just a moment of boredom away.

HOW EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE INFLUENCES ACADEMIC SUCCESS

We explore why understanding and managing your feelings is just as important as knowing the answers.

When we think about academic success, it’s easy to picture good marks, neat homework and high test scores. However, what if we told you that one of the biggest predictors of how well a child does in school has little to do with how quickly they can recall their times tables?

The different kinds of early years education and how EQ boosts school grades!

Emotional intelligence or EQ - the ability to recognise, manage and express emotions effectively - plays a huge part in a child’s learning journey. In fact, research consistently shows that children with higher EQ tend to do better not only academically, but socially and behaviourally too. Here’s why emotional intelligence matters in the classroom - and how you can help nurture it at home.

LEARNING AND EMOTION

Think back to your own school days. Chances are, the lessons that stuck with you weren’t just the ones taught with clarity, but the ones that made you feel something - whether that was curiosity, confidence or even a bit of challenge. Kids don’t learn in a vacuum. Their ability to focus, persist and thrive is directly linked to how safe, understood and emotionally supported they feel.

A child who can manage their frustration when a task gets tricky is more likely to keep trying. One who can communicate when they’re overwhelmed is more likely to get the help they need. Emotional intelligence helps children stay calm under pressure, navigate group work and bounce back from setbacks - all essential parts of school life. Even more so, EQ allows children to feel secure in their learning environment, which builds their resilience and helps them take healthy academic risks - like putting up their hand or trying a new challenge.

BETTER RELATIONSHIPS

Academic environments are filled with social interactions - with teachers, classmates, lunch monitors, even bus drivers. Children who understand emotions, both their own and others’, are more likely to form strong, respectful relationships. This sense of connection helps boost their classroom confidence and encourages participation, which in turn supports their learning.

Children with higher EQ also tend to resolve conflicts more effectively, work well in teams and show greater empathy - all qualities that contribute to a more positive, collaborative classroom.

WHERE TO START

You don’t need to be an expert in psychology to raise an emotionally intelligent child. In fact, the most powerful lessons come from everyday moments. An easy starting place is to reflect together at the end of the day. It might be helpful to begin with open-ended questions like, “What was something that made you feel proud today?” or “Did anything frustrate you during lessons?” These chats can create space for growth and emotional awareness. By teaching kids that emotions are normal and manageable, we are giving them the tools to thrive in school - and beyond!

MONTESSORI, REGGIO EMILIA, TRADITIONALWHICH EDUCATION STYLE IS RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?

Navigating the world of early education can feel like a minefield. Here's how to choose the approach that suits your little learner best.

As parents, we all want to give our children the very best start in life - and that includes their first steps into education. But with so many different philosophies out there, deciding where and how your child should learn can quickly become overwhelming. Should you go for a structured classroom with set routines? Or lean into play-based, child-led learning? And what exactly is the difference between Montessori and Reggio Emilia?

Each educational approach has its own strengths and the right fit often comes down to your child’s personality, your family’s values and the kind of learning environment you feel most comfortable with.

Let’s take a look at the three main stylesMontessori, Reggio Emilia and Traditional - and explore what each has to offer.

MONTESSORI

Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 1900s, the Montessori approach is all about fostering independence, curiosity and hands-on learning. It’s designed around the idea that children learn best when they’re free to explore and make choices within a prepared environment.

Montessori classrooms are calm, beautifully ordered spaces filled with natural materials. Everything is child-sized and within reach.

Children work at their own pace, often in small groups or individually, choosing activities that interest them. Teachers (called guides) observe and gently steer rather than instruct, encouraging children to problemsolve and discover answers for themselves.

Suited to children who thrive with structure but enjoy autonomy, Montessori can be particularly effective for children who are naturally independent, focused and enjoy working quietly on tasks.

Montessori environments are more structured than they may appear at first glance. Some children might crave more group play, imaginative storytelling or teacher-led activities than what’s typically offered. If your little one is especially sociable or prefers creative free play, they may find other settings more stimulating.

REGGIO EMILIA

Originating in post-war Italy, the Reggio Emilia philosophy sees children as strong, capable and full of potential. It’s deeply rooted in creativity, communication and collaboration, with a big emphasis on relationships - between children, teachers, parents and the learning environment.

Reggio-inspired spaces are warm, homely and often filled with light, artwork and open-ended materials like clay, fabric, wood

and recycled items. Learning is projectbased and emergent, meaning teachers build lessons around the interests and questions of the children. You might find a class building a model city after discussing architecture or creating a puppet show about feelings.

Teachers act more like co-learners, documenting children’s ideas, conversations and artwork to better understand their thought processes and celebrate their creativity. Reggio Emilia is ideal for children who are imaginative, expressive and love to explore ideas through art, conversation and collaboration. This style suits children who enjoy working in groups and thinking outside the box.

This approach can sometimes be harder to define because it varies from one setting to another. As it relies heavily on the passion

and skill of the educators, it’s worth visiting a Reggio-inspired nursery to see how they interpret the philosophy. Some parents also find the lack of formal structure or outcomes a bit unclear, especially when preparing for later schooling.

TRADITIONAL

Traditional education might not have a fancy name, but it’s what many of us experienced growing up. It typically involves a teacherled classroom, a structured curriculum and a more defined schedule of lessons and activities.

In traditional early years settings, children follow a set timetable that might include phonics, maths, story time and group activities. There’s a stronger emphasis on school readiness, with early literacy and

numeracy skills taking centre stage. Classrooms often include teacher-led instruction, worksheets and wholegroup discussions.

Traditional education suits children who benefit from predictability, clear instructions and consistent routines. Some children feel more secure when they know exactly what’s coming next and enjoy direct guidance from adults.

Sometimes, traditional settings may offer less flexibility for individual interests or creativity. Children who are especially curious, sensory-seeking or learn best through movement might not engage as easily with seated work or a more rigid schedule. However, many traditional nurseries are evolving to include more play and child-led elements throughout their day.

THE PERFECT FIT

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Every child is unique - and so is every setting. Here are a few things you may like to reflect on when making your decision.

Observe your child

Does your little learner enjoy creating, collaborating and talking things through? Reggio Emilia might be a good match. Are they quietly focused, love order and enjoy doing things on their own? In this case, Montessori could be a great fit. Alternatively, do they thrive with structure and routine? If so, a traditional setting may work best.

Consider your values

Do you value independence and practical life skills, or are you drawn to collaborative learning and creative expression? What feels most aligned with your parenting style is a huge consideration and one that only you can decide.

Visit and ask questions

A school or nursery’s philosophy is only as good as its day-to-day practice. It’s best to spend time observing, chatting with the staff and asking how they approach learning, discipline, creativity and communication. Often, it’s the feel of the place that tells you the most.

Stay flexible

Remember that children change. What works beautifully at age 3 might need to shift by age 6 and that’s okay. Education doesn’t have to be a straight line - it’s a journey, and you can adjust as your child grows.

Whether it’s a Montessori school with tidy trays and counting beads, a Reggio-inspired nursery buzzing with imagination or a traditional classroom with songs and storieswhat matters most is that your child feels safe, seen and supported.

Choosing an educational approach isn’t about picking the “best” method - it’s about finding the right rhythm for your child. This is the one where their interests are nurtured, their individuality celebrated and their confidence gently grown. After all, the best learning happens when children feel happy to be exactly who they are.

HOME & GARDEN

Making the balcony garden of your child’s dreams and fragrancing your home safely.

NATURAL WAYS TO SCENT YOUR HOME WITHOUT HARMFUL CHEMICALS

Creating a beautifully fragranced home doesn't have to come at the expense of your family's health. Let’s take a look!

We all want our homes to smell fresh, welcoming and calming. Unfortunately, many commercial air fresheners, plug-ins and scented candles contain synthetic fragrances and potentially harmful chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin, trigger allergies and lower your indoor air quality - which is especially serious for babies and young children. Women are also more susceptible to the impact of these chemicals. Some of these synthetic ingredients are known as endocrine disruptors - substances that cause hormone imbalances.

The good news is that there are plenty of simple, natural ways to add beautiful, gentle scents to your space - all without relying on artificial perfumes. Here are a few of our favourite ideas to get you started.

ESSENTIAL OIL DIFFUSERS

These are a classic choice for a reason. Essential oil diffusers use water and

ultrasonic waves to disperse tiny particles of oil into the air, filling your home with subtle, natural fragrance. You might choose lavender for a calming bedtime atmosphere, lemon for a zingy kitchen boost or eucalyptus when everyone’s feeling a bit sniffly. Always use high-quality, pure essential oils and doublecheck that they’re safe for use around pets or children.

STOVETOP SCENTS

There’s something deeply comforting about a pot gently bubbling away on the hob. Some people like to simmer fragrances in this way and easy ideas include sliced citrus fruits, cinnamon sticks, cloves or a few sprigs of rosemary and thyme. This method is perfect for winter days - and your house will smell like a cosy spiced hug. You can often use up wilting herbs, citrus peels or apple cores this way, cutting down on waste as you go.

HOMEMADE LINEN SPRAYS

Create your own fabric freshener with just a few ingredients: distilled water, a splash of witch hazel and your favourite essential oils. All you have to do is shake the bottle and spritz on your sheets, curtains or cushions for a light, natural scent. Try blending lavender and chamomile for bedtime, or grapefruit and mint for an energising morning refresh.

HERB AND FLOWER SACHETS

Pop dried lavender, rose petals or lemon balm into small cotton or muslin bags and tuck them into your drawers, wardrobes or linen cupboards. Not only will they make everything smell lovely, but they can also help deter moths - especially lavender and cedarwood. Also, why not let your little ones help make the sachets? It’s a gentle, sensory activity that’s both fun and useful - a win-win!

BAKING SODA BOOSTERS

Baking soda is a brilliant natural deodoriser. Just add a few drops of essential oil to a small jar of it and leave it open in rooms that tend to get stuffy or musty - like bathrooms or near the shoe rack. It’ll gently absorb any unpleasant smells while also adding a hint of fragrance.

Our homes are where we rest, connect and reset. By choosing natural scents, you’re not only protecting your family’s wellbeing - you’re creating an environment that’s soothing, safe and authentically yours. The bonus is that you get to enjoy a gorgeous natural fragrance too!

CREATING A FAMILYFRIENDLY BALCONY GARDEN

You don’t need a big garden to introduce little ones to the joy of growing. Even the smallest balcony can blossom into a beautiful, child-friendly green space.

City living often means saying goodbye to rolling lawns and sprawling flower beds. However, having a balcony doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the magic of gardening - especially with children! In fact, creating a balcony garden can be a wonderful way to connect as a family, get your hands (a little) dirty and teach your kids about nature in a manageable, everyday way.

Whether you’re working with a tiny Juliet balcony or a roomy terrace, there are so many clever and creative ways to turn your space into a green haven that’s safe, fun and full of charm.

START WITH SAFETY

Before you bring in the pots and plants, it’s important to make sure your balcony is secure and child-friendly. Check the railings for gaps

and ensure they’re high enough to prevent climbing or leaning. You might want to add a clear safety screen, bamboo fencing or outdoor fabric to cover any wide spaces and create a cosier, enclosed feel.

Also, consider where your planters or furniture are placed - nothing should be too close to the edge or offer an easy “step up” for curious little climbers.

THINK VERTICAL

Balconies are often short on floor space, so make the most of your walls and railings. Vertical gardens, hanging baskets and wall-mounted planters are brilliant space-savers. They not only free up room, but they also create a lush, layered look that children find enchantingalmost like a mini jungle or fairy forest.

Ladder shelves, stackable planters or pallet gardens are great budget-friendly options and can be rearranged as your needs change.

THE RIGHT PLANTS

When gardening with little ones, it’s wise to go for hardy, fast-growing plants that are safe and engaging. Kids love watching seeds sprout and bloom, so try a mix of flowers, herbs and edible plants to keep things interesting. Here is a quick look at what to plant, depending on your aim.

For a sensory garden:

• Lavender and mint for scent

• Lamb’s ear for soft, fuzzy leaves

• Lemon balm and rosemary for touch and taste

For colour and ease:

• Marigolds are easy to grow from seed

• Sunflowers, nasturtiums and pansies are bright and cheerful

For tiny harvests:

• Cherry tomatoes for a sense of accomplishment

• Strawberries for sweetness

• Baby carrots for little hands

Always double-check that your chosen plants are non-toxic and safe for children and pets.

A KID’S GROWING CORNER

Even on a small balcony, it’s lovely to set aside a little area just for your child. This could be a brightly coloured pot with their name on it, a mini raised bed or even a few seed trays laid out on a bench. Let them choose what to growcress, beans and radishes are all speedy and satisfying - and help them water and care for their plants regularly. You might be surprised how seriously they take it when they’re “in charge” of something that grows!

CHILD-SIZED FURNITURE

A small foldable table and chair set can transform your balcony into a delightful outdoor play and snack spot. Look for weather-resistant furniture that’s easy to store, or even consider a few large floor cushions and a waterproof mat for relaxed, picnic-style fun.

This is a lovely place to read stories together, have lunch al fresco or simply sit and enjoy the space you’ve created.

MAKE IT PLAYFUL

Who says a garden can’t be fun? There are lots of ways to add playful touches to a balcony without making it feel cluttered. Wind chimes, painted plant pots, pebble trails or fairy lights can turn the space into something magical - especially in the evening when the lights twinkle.

You could even hang a little chalkboard or weather tracker on the wall to make daily check-ins part of your child’s routine.

WATERING MADE EASY

Keeping plants watered can be tricky in summer, especially on sunny balconies. Try to group thirstier plants together so you can water them all at once. For little helpers, a small watering can (or even a spray bottle) is just the right size and makes them feel included in the daily care.

Self-watering pots or recycled plastic bottles with holes poked in the lids can help with moisture retention too - ideal if you're heading away for a few days.

LOW MAINTENANCE

Family life is busy, and your balcony garden should be a joy, not a chore, so opt for easycare plants and good-quality compost to keep things simple. Mulching around the base of plants can help retain moisture and reduce the need for constant watering.

You might also want to plant in larger containers rather than lots of small pots - they hold water better, give roots more room and reduce the need for frequent tending.

BRING NATURE CLOSER

Even a small balcony can become a mini haven for wildlife. Why not hang a bee-friendly flower box or add a small insect hotel to encourage helpful pollinators? Watching butterflies, ladybirds or bees visit your plants is always exciting for little ones - and it’s a gentle way to teach about biodiversity and ecosystems.

Bird feeders and water dishes (placed safely) can also attract feathered friends, giving your child a daily dose of nature, even in the heart of the city.

A BALCONY OF POSSIBILITIES

Balcony gardens prove that you don’t need rolling hills or a huge back garden to raise a child with a love for nature. With a bit of planning and some creative thinking, even the most modest outdoor space can become a lush, joyful extension of your home - a place where children can dig, learn, grow and connect. For parents, it offers something just as precious - a calming, green sanctuary where the whole family can breathe a little deeper and enjoy the seasons as they change. A shared cup of tea on a spring morning, a sunflower proudly measured by tiny hands, or a cherry tomato picked straight from the vine - these are the everyday moments that stay with us.

PET CORNER

Fun pet toys you can make at home and how to introduce your furry friend to your new baby!

FOUR DIY PET TOY IDEAS FOR KIDS

Get crafty, save money and strengthen the bond between your little ones and their furry best friend.

If there’s one thing both children and pets love, it’s playtime. And when the whole family gets involved in making the fun happen, everyone wins - especially your four-legged companion. Making pet toys at home is not only a cost-effective way to keep your pet stimulated, it’s also a fantastic hands-on activity for kids. It teaches creativity, kindness and responsibility, all wrapped up in a joyful afternoon of crafting.

Here are some simple, safe and enjoyable DIY pet toy ideas you can whip up at home with your child - no special skills or fancy materials needed.

SOCK SNUFFLE TOY

That odd sock at the bottom of the drawer can become your cat or dog’s new favourite toy.

You’ll need:

• One old clean sock

• Some treats or dry kibble

• A knot of fabric or a tennis ball for structure

How to make it

Place a handful of treats or a ball inside the sock, then knot it tightly. Decorate the outside with (pet-safe) markers to make it colourful. Dogs and cats will love sniffing out the hidden rewards and children will love seeing their creation come to life. Make sure it’s supervised play - and replace the toy if it becomes too worn or torn.

CARDBOARD CASTLE

Your delivery boxes can be turned into a hideaway haven for cats or other small pets.

You’ll need:

• Small cardboard boxes

• Child-safe scissors

• Non-toxic paint or markers (optional)

Cut doors and windows into your box and stack or connect several together to make tunnels or towers. Kids can decorate the outside with paint or draw on signs like “Fluffy’s Fort” or “Cat Kingdom.” This one is perfect for hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs - and adventurous cats!

T-SHIRT TUG TOY

This little project is great for larger dogs and energetic little ones.

You’ll need:

• Two or three old t-shirts

• Scissors

Cut the shirts into long strips, knot them at one end, braid them together and knot the other end to finish. It’s a brilliant project for practicing braiding skills - and it creates a strong, chewable toy your dog will love.

TREAT ROLL PUZZLE

Ideal for all kinds of pets, this is a lovely way to mix treats and mental stimulation.

You’ll need:

• A cardboard toilet paper roll

• Pet-safe treats

• Scrap paper or tissue

Pop some treats inside, crumple the ends, and let your pet figure out how to open it. Children can decorate the outside, or even build a ‘maze’ of tubes for extra fun.

A CREATIVE WIN

Homemade toys don’t have to be perfectthey just have to be made with love. These easy projects encourage children to think about their pets’ needs and personalities, while enjoying quality time with the animals they adore. And for pets, nothing beats a toy made by their favourite humans. So grab those scissors and socks, and let the crafting (and tail wagging) begin!

HOW TO INTRODUCE A NEW BABY TO YOUR PET

Welcoming a baby is a big change - not just for you, but for your furry friend too. Here's how to help the transition go smoothly for everyone.

Bringing a new baby home is one of life’s most exciting moments. Amid the nappy changes, night feeds and tiny yawns, there’s another family member you might be wondering about - your pet. Whether you’ve got a loyal dog, a curious cat or a fluffy companion somewhere in between, introducing them to your newborn takes planning, patience and understanding.

Pets are creatures of habit. A new baby means new smells, sounds and routines, and all of that can feel a little overwhelming - especially if your pet has been used to being the centre of attention. The good news? With a little preparation, you can set the stage for a loving, respectful bond between your child and their furry sibling that lasts a lifetime.

START PREPARING EARLY

If you’re expecting, it’s a good idea to begin preparing your pet well before your due date. Gradually adjusting their routines can help ease the shock of sudden change.

Adjust attention levels

In the weeks leading up to the baby’s arrival, consider slightly reducing the amount of time you spend doting on your pet - not to be unkind, but to help them adjust to not being the sole focus. Try to vary the timing of walks, meals and cuddles so they don’t become too dependent on a fixed routine.

Baby sounds and smells

Play recordings of baby cries or coos so your pet can get used to the noise and introduce them to baby lotion or wipes to familiarise their senses. This can help reduce the surprise factor later on.

Brush up on training

Basic commands like “sit”, “stay” or “leave it” are more important than ever with a baby around. If your pet needs a refresher course, now’s the time to do it - ideally with plenty of positive reinforcement and rewards.

THE FIRST INTRODUCTION

When the big moment arrives and you bring your baby home, your pet will likely be excited, curious or even a little wary. How you handle that first meeting is key.

Stay calm and relaxed

Animals often take emotional cues from their humans. So, if you’re tense, they’ll sense it. Therefore, try to remain calm and upbeat, and speak in a soft, reassuring tone.

Scent first

Before allowing your pet to meet the baby, let them sniff an item of the baby’s clothing or blanket. This gives them a chance to get used to the scent in a non-threatening way.

Take it slow

Hold your baby securely and allow your pet to approach you both at their own pace. However, don’t force interaction. Rather, allow gentle sniffing and reward good behaviour with treats and praise.

Always supervise

Even the most well-behaved pets should never be left alone with a newborn. Your pet may not understand how delicate a baby is and accidents can happen in an instant.

MAINTAINING HARMONY

Once the introductions are out of the way, it’s all about keeping the peace and reinforcing a positive relationship between your baby and pet as your household adjusts to its new normal.

Stick to routines

Life with a baby is unpredictable, but try to maintain some consistency in your pet’s feeding, walking or playtime routines. Predictability really helps pets feel secure.

Positive reinforcement

Reward your pet for good behaviour around the baby - calmness, gentle curiosity or ignoring the baby altogether are all wins. Lots of praise and treats go a long way in helping them form positive associations.

Involve your pet

Rather than pushing them out, try to involve your pet in the new family dynamic. Let them sit nearby during feeding time, include them in walks with the stroller or give them attention while the baby naps. It reminds them they’re still an important part of the family.

MANAGING JEALOUSY

It’s completely normal for pets to experience a range of emotions during this time, including jealousy, anxiety or clinginess. Here are some ways to support them through it.

Don’t punish, redirect

If your pet misbehaves (chewing a baby toy or jumping up), avoid scolding. Instead, gently redirect them and offer an alternative. Consistent, kind correction is far more effective than punishment.

Provide safe spaces

Make sure your pet has a quiet, cosy space they can retreat to if things get too noisy

or chaotic. Whether it’s a crate, bed or a favourite corner, pets need downtime too.

Watch for stress

Changes in appetite, grooming habits or toileting can be signs your pet is feeling overwhelmed. If you’re worried, don’t hesitate to chat with your vet for support or advice.

BUILDING THE BOND

As your baby grows, your pet can become a trusted friend, playmate and even a protectorbut their relationship will need gentle nurturing.

Teach respect early

As soon as your child is old enough to interact with your pet, begin teaching them how to be kind and gentle. No tail pulling, ear poking or chasing - and always supervise.

Be the example

Children learn by watching. If they see you speaking softly to the pet, using gentle hands and showing respect, they’ll follow suit.

Celebrate the bond

Capture photos, tell stories and cherish the moments when your child and pet connect - a

head rested on a furry belly, a shared sunbeam on the floor or a giggle at a wagging tail. These are the memories that make growing up with a pet so special.

Welcoming a baby is a big adjustment, and it’s perfectly natural for your pet to need some time to adapt. But with patience, love and a little forward planning, your pet and baby can learn to coexist happily - and eventually, thrive together.

You’re building the foundation for a bond that could bring joy and comfort to both your child and your pet for years to come. And in the end, what’s better than watching your little one grow up with their very first best friend by their side?

GOOD LIVING

The Editor’s latest beauty favourites and how to celebrate Dads this month!

SIMPLE WAYS TO CELEBRATE FATHER'S DAY

Thoughtful ways to celebrate the dad in your life - beyond cufflinks and mugs!

Father’s Day doesn’t need to be grand or over-the-top to be memorable. In fact, some of the most meaningful celebrations come from the smallest, most heartfelt gestures! Whether your partner is a first-time dad or a seasoned parenting pro, taking a moment to thank him for all he does can mean the world.

Here are some heartfelt, down-to-earth ideas to help him feel appreciated and loved, and make the day feel truly special.

LET THE KIDS LEAD

Little ones might not be able to wrap a gift or book a brunch, but, with just a bit of help, even the tiniest tots can “give” something to dad. A handprint card, a toddler’s scribbled masterpiece or a video message from an older child can be surprisingly moving and are often better than anything in a box.

A colourful card, a photo collage or a voice note from your child saying what they love about dad (expect sweet answers like “He does the best dinosaur roars”) can be utterly priceless. It’s not about perfection - it’s about presence.

SAY IT OUT LOUD

Fathers are often the quiet grafters - whether it’s night feeds, weekend park trips or quiet reassurance when everything feels overwhelming - and it doesn’t always go acknowledged out loud.

A few kind words can go a long way. Whether that’s a handwritten note or a simple message at breakfast, tell him what you admire about him as a dad. Maybe he’s patient in moments you’re not, or the one who always knows how to cheer everyone up. Whatever it is, take the opportunity to remind him that his efforts don’t go unnoticed!

SLOW TIME

It’s easy to focus on gifts for Father’s Day, but this year, consider moving the focus onto shared time. Plan an activity he enjoys, from a picnic at his favourite park, to a homemade brunch in the garden or a nature walk as a family, and let the day be slow and relaxed, with no rush or expectations. These kinds of days are so precious - and outlive any material present. There’s no need for fanfare if that’s

not necessarily his style - just space to be together, laugh, relax and make memories.

OFFER SPACE

Sometimes, what a parent really craves is a breather. A lie-in, a quiet coffee, a bit of solo time to recharge - especially if life’s been hectic lately. Ask your partner what would actually make his day feel restorative and enjoyable, because there’s no “right” way to celebrate. For some dads, it’s a loud, messy family breakfast. For others, it’s a moment of calm and a hot cup of tea in peace. Listen, and let him lead.

In the end, Father’s Day doesn’t need balloons or banners to be beautiful. It just needs a moment – a pause to say, we see you, we love you and we’re glad you’re ours.

This month, I share my favourite unisex fragrances for summer - the perfect Father’s Day gift or a new seasonal signature scent for yourself!

ITALIAN SUMMER IS HERE WITH ACQUA DI PARMA

I’m super excited to announce that the Italian luxury fragrance house, Acqua di Parma, has unveiled a new limited-edition summer collection, called Blu Mediterraneo La Riserva.

Each fragrance in the line evokes the energy, the sun and the attitude of the Italian Mediterranean, whether it’s Panarea’s volcanic landscapes, the seaside bliss of Capri or the colour-drenched hills of the Amalfi coast. I’ve long been a fan of their unisex perfumes and these are absolutely gorgeous!

A reinterpretation of the Maison’s most elegant Blu Mediterraneo fragrances as eau de parfums, La Riserva is a line of long-wearing scents developed through an intensive two-month maceration technique. This extra time delivers more richness and depth to the formula, leaving behind a smooth, intensely layered character.

They make for a beautiful addition to any summer scent wardrobe - and if you’re looking for a luxurious Father’s Day gift, they certainly tick all the right boxes!

Mirto

di Panarea La Riserva

Mirto di Panarea La Riserva pays homage to the wild myrtle fruit and rugged ground of Panarea’s volcanic fields. The top notes of cedrat essence, sage and juniper berries give it a refreshing start, followed by a heart of myrtle and lavender essences, deepened by the warmth of myrrh absolute. The base notes, including patchouli, create a lasting, earthy warmth that lingers beautifully on the skin.

Arancia di Capri La Riserva

From the lush landscapes and vibrant atmosphere of Capri comes the Arancia di Capri La Riserva. The top notes of Italian blood orange and mandarin create an initial fresh, zesty burst. This is complemented by a herbal heart of aromatic rosemary and Italian basil essences, accented by a salty mineral accord that evokes the sea breeze of Capri. The fragrance settles into a warm base of cedarwood, ambrettolide and rich suedelike golden hour in a bottle.

Fico di Amalfi La Riserva

Fico di Amalfi La Riserva is a celebration of the Mediterranean fig, combined with the vibrant citrus notes that define the Amalfi Coast. The top notes are a lively blend of Italian mandarin, blood orange, grapefruit and lemon essences, leading to a heart of orris concentré, fig and lemon infusions. The fragrance is rounded out with base notes of tonka bean absolute, ambrettolide and orcanox - a stunning scent that’s sunny, sophisticated and quietly addictive.

Priced from AED 670, the new fragrances are available in three sizes - 50ml, 100ml and 180ml - with each scent housed in Acqua di Parma’s iconic bottle design, now reimagined in a deeper and more intense shade of Mediterranean blue.

Whether you're gifting, treating yourself or refreshing your fragrance for the season, this sun-drenched trio offers a touch of Italian escapism - no passport required.
