BATHROOM AND SAUNA

Schist used in the bathroom adds to the value of the house. An exclusive look, long lifetime and high quality all make it a good investment.

THE KITCHEN

Schist gives a timelessly and beautiful kitchen, and a strong and maintenance-free surface.

Palanga Spa Hotel The modern, luxury Hotel Palanga is one of the most exclusive hotels in Lithuania. It was designed by the well-known architect Donatas Rakauskas, and in 2003 it was named the best Lithuanian architecture project of the year.

The hotel is set amidst a pine forest right on the seashore. Large glass walls allow the light that filters through the trees to flood into the lobby and the spa area. The hotel’s surroundings also inspired the choice of materials, with Oerdal quartzite in combination with white marble and olive and cedar wood dominating both public areas and guest rooms.

SWIMMING POOL

The Offerdal quartzite has vey low water absorption qualities, is hardwearing, slip resistant and resistant against chloride. Few materials are better are better suited for use in or around swimming pools.

FIREPLACE The element come together when you make a fire in a fireplace made of millions years old material. Schist gives a gives a fireplace a unique look. Either as bricks, untreated, swan or hand-cut-schist is the idea material for constructing fireplaces.

Ensjø subway station

The new Ensjø underground station represents a part of the ongoing transformation of Ensjø. Elegant materials have been used to give the station a visual identity that ties it in more closely with the stations of the city centre.

The client wanted hard-wearing materials that would also be available for years to come, and natural Norwegian stone was therefore chosen both for the platform surfaces and the station walls.

It was a choice that also served the purposes of universal design: light granite was selected for the platform surface, while darker Otta Høgseter phyllite was chosen for the walls. The dark Otta phyllite was also used for safety strips on stairs and ramps.

On the walls, the Otta of different widths and thickness was installed in a regular pattern-something which created a better interplay between various wall installations such as advertising panels, sign, benches and technical installations. By dividing up the wall in this way, it was made at made at the same time less vulnerable to tagging, graffiti and postering.

Scandinavian Golf Club

The Scandinavian Golf Club outside Copenhagen is home to one of the world’s 100 best golf courses. The clubhouse has a large zigzag-shaped timber roof that floats above a plinth of natural stone.

The choice of materials is dominated by Otta phyllite used in a contrasting combination with Douglas fir. The plinth’s horizontal exterior surfaces are clad in a naturally smooth stone, with a brushed finish used on the interior surfaces. Vertical surfaces on exterior walls, columns and chimneys are clad so that the visible surface is formed by broken edges of the phyllite. The roof is covered with naturally smooth cut square tiles.

Ă˜rland cultural house

The Ă˜rland cultural centre houses within its walls a main hall, a cinema, a library, a school of music and performing arts and apartments, as well as an extension to the existing Ă˜rland Kysthotell.

The walls of the cultural centre’s main hall are clad in Otta phyllite, which gives the space a distinctive character. In addition to making the building stand out from the surrounding flat landscape, it also gives substance to the “glass street” that runs through the interior of the building.

Three standard widths in varying lengths and with broken edges have resulted in a wall that is at the same time rigid and playful, while also prompting associations with the waves on the sea outside. At the same time the natural stone exploits the distinctive, constantly shifting light in Ă˜rlandet by changing colour and character in response to the changing light and weather conditions.

Erik Dahlberg

Following a huge blaze in 2005, just about half of the Erik Dahlberg quarter in Kristianstad had to be rebuilt. The new building was finished by 2007 and it has been well-received by both local residents and visitors.

The building houses shops on two floors, two oďŹƒce premises and twelve apartments accessed via the inner atrium. The atrium also fulfils a role as a shared outdoor area, the client having emphasised the creation of a warm outdoor environment.

Boston Public Library

The Boston Public Library (Honan-Allston Branch) is a single story 20,000 square foot building along a prominent neighborhood street. The building addresses issues that are important to the Boston Public Library, including maximum visual control within the library, a reading garden that serves as many spaces as possible, off-hours access for community use, and a prominent reading room on the front of the building.

The warm material palette includes Otta rust façade panels, Vermont slate shingles and rough sculpings, unfinished Jarrah cladding, and wood windows. These materials were chosen not only because they minimize maintenance demands, but also because they acquire a beautiful patina with age. On the interior, the floors are a combination of hardwood and cork that share the same warm tones of the exterior materials. Both inside and out, this palette balances the building’s urbanity with an informality appropriate to the library’s community-oriented function.
