MESSAGE FROM MARTY This Product Guide is designed to assist our clients & customers achieve extraordinary experiences from their Sheep & Wool enterprises by revealing & explaining our latest services & reaffirming our core values & commitment to the wool producer. 2018 has been the year of new price records being achieved for most AWEX Micron Price Guides. With the AWEX EMI reaching a new level of $20.73 & maintaining at prices over $20.00 for over 5 weeks the market closed in early July a few cents under at 1981c, rounding out a remarkable year for Australian Wool. Not only did the EMI hit new levels in AUD terms but the EMI in USD terms hit a new record of $15.38USc & spent 6 weeks over $15.00USc. Whilst these amazing prices were being achieved in the market place & delivering record income to producers, another (less palatable) event (the mother of all droughts) was emerging. This event is having the opposite financial impact & applying enormous financial & labour pressures to the majority of wool producers across the Eastern & Southern States. At the time of penning this article (August 2018) 100% of NSW is drought declared & in some areas that Moses & Son service the commencement to sell off excess stock is well under way & in some areas all the sheep are being sold off. The unspoken social impact of these drought events are of major concern however we encourage all producers to watch out for their neighbour, a friend or someone you know of you may be concerned about. Wool production forecasting has been indicating a small retracement in production for Australia, however, with Spring emerging quite quickly & little or no hope for a reasonable season ahead the projected production forecast could take us to wool production levels we have never seen in our lifetime. With this news front of mind Moses & Son’s promise of keeping our clients in the top profit percentile in the industry has become more important than ever.

We plan to do this by continuing to offer the best solutions through our network of experienced Wool Technical Officers (WTO) but this year we are offering a consultancy service over & above our premium service schedule. Lexi Cesnik has been working with Moses & Son for three years. For the first two under an internship with Sally Martin & Moses & Son, & for the last 12 months consulting to clients as their livestock & wool production specialist. In addition to this Adele Smith, WTO & Precision Sheep Management Specialist, & our consultants will offer a wide range of face to face consultancy services, & our team will be coordinating & conducting educations sessions. There will be more information on these new services later in this publication. Our team of WTO’s will be operating & delivering new metrics to allow improvements in-shed compliance & best practice; broadening our clients’ market exposure; & working alongside our clients to ensure technology is utilised & price risk management is better understood & utilised. Moses & Son staff members have been trained to be able to receive the electronic wool specifications now available to Wool Classers & Producers via the AWEX WoolClip App. There are currently two companies supplying these Apps to the Woolclasser, Producer & the Woolbrokers. Moses & Son encourage all participants to utilise these products to deliver accurate & timely data to Brokers. With over 60% of deliveries received into store currently having incorrect, partially incomplete or missing data, brokers, like Moses & Son, welcome the introduction of these technologies. When a critical mass of electronic speci’s is achieved I envisage that there will be cost savings that can be passed back to the producer. Moses & Son have “got your back” through the good & bad times & we will aim to deliver value to each & every client through our unique approach to livestock & wool marketing, cutting edge wool handling, systems & the ability to perform data analysis that will open up new opportunities in your sheep enterprise.

Managing Market Volatility Risk Using Forward Selling Are you fed up with the wool market plummeting just as you are about to sell? Or conversely you have just sold & the market then rises immediately.

option to assist you manage this difficult situation. It is called a Forward Delivery Indicator Contract. (FDIC).

The fact is that wool is one of the world’s most volatile commodities. Moses & Son believe that in the current world economic environment wool prices will remain a volatile commodity. The elevated volatility of the wool market in recent years has encouraged some wool growers to seek ways to avoid being forced to sell at the bottom of the market or to store wool anticipating price increases.

Wool producers & wool brokers are beginning to realise the role of forward selling in their marketing program. That is, to have some wool sold forward, sell some at Auction immediately after shearing & store some if required. This type of strategy is a smart way of spreading the risk created by a volatile market. Once growers are aware of their costs of production & decide on a favourable level of return, they can become a price maker by selling some of their clip forward or leaving an order with Moses & Son to sell at a specific price.

Price Risk Management Services In recognition of an increasing need to manage price risks associated with producing wool, Moses & Son have engaged Price Risk specialists AgRisk Management & AgConcepts to provide a specialised rural Price Risk Management service.

We can assist in education in futures trading, to allow you to feel confident making any risk management decisions. Growers can sell forward up to 18 months or more before shearing. Rather than hoping the market will be acceptable when you sell, work with our Wool Technical team to create a return that meets your objectives.

As an additional service Moses & Son, in joint venture with AgRisk Management, can provide an

CONSULTANCY Services Feed Rationing Why should I do a feed ration? Because Barley’s not Barley… Table 1. Ranges in ME and CP content of different feed stuffs, source: NSW DPI, Dairy Australia

Grain Barley Faba Beans Field Peas Lupins Maize (grain) Oats Wheat

So? Minimum requirements for sheep vary depending on maternal status and age. Table 2. Shows the nutritional requirements of Stock. Circled in red is the requirements used in he below example, all are multiplies but 1.6 to adjust for a 60kg ewe body weight. Source: NSW DPI

Do you know if what you are feeding your stock is giving them the energy they need to feed their lambs or enough protein for your weaners to meet their target growth rates? Without knowing you could be underfeeding your stock and loosing production or over feeding and wasting grain and money. So what do I do??

Table 3. Feed test results for oats in 2018

1. Get a feed test analysis completed on your grain to know EXACTLY what you have. (Table 3.) 2. Calculate what energy and protein your livestock are receiving from the pasture. 3. Determine what class of stock you are feeding and what they need? (Table 2.) 4. Calculate the amount of grain you need to feed out, to fulfil the ME and CP requirements. Notes to remember along the way: Animals have a limit to the amount of feed (Kg) they can physically eat in one day, some grain will limit macro and micro minerals available and supplementation may be required, high starch and high oil content can be damaging to sheep. Does that all sound complicated and like too much work?? We can assist with the collection of samples for testing and provide you with accurate pasture measurements. We will then produce a full feed ration for your stock. 12

CONSULTANCY Services Precision Sheep Management – Collection & Analysis of Individual Sheep Production & Traits Did you know that there are large variations within all commercial flocks? Below is a graph of ewes in a “typical” Merino operation, the maiden (hogget) ewes were fleece weighed and Micron tested and then a $/head fleece value was allocated for each sheep. They were then plotted to show the natural variation. The ewes had an average body weighing of 65kg, Micron average of 18.8um (range: 17 – 19) and an average fleece weight of 7kg (range: 3.2 – 7.3kg). As you can see there is a large range of production within this mob. These ewes were classed in August, (visual only) removing 10% of the mob, they were then fleece weighed to remove the next 15%.

0.03 0.02 0.01 0 50

When compared to each other, you can see that the “elite” animals in the below flock analysis were 12% more productive than the “Flock” sheep (average), and that the culls were 8% less valuable. (Remember these sheep have been visually classed which will remove the “true culls”.) Did you realise that when selecting sheep using only visual tools that you could be missing out on 30% of your productivity? The total value of the above measured flock is $68,791. The producer needs to class out 30% of the animals in the mob. If he selects 30% using only visual tool (his selection efficiency is likely 0.6 or slightly above average), However if using both Visual and Objective measurement his selection efficiency may be closer to 0.80. Having a high selection efficiency increases profitability/productivity. Would you like to be able to select ewes into your system who are best suited for production and maternal ability? So, what do I do? You need to collect 3 pieces of information:   

Does it all sound a bit too complicated?

Fleece weight Fibre Diameter Body weight

That’s where we come in. Moses & Son are able to travel to your farm, collect all of the necessary data and help you to identify which animals are the most productive in your enterprise. 14

How it Works The massive variability in bloodlines can be capitalised upon by selecting the most profitable sheep in the industry for your enterprise. 1. Growers can opt to participate in the genetic comparisons, or they can source the information on their bloodline if it’s represented in trials that have already been conducted. 2. When the Grower is ready to sell their sheep, Bluechip Livestock will supply objective data to assess the expected performance of the sheep, allowing the vendor to command a premium price for this performance. 3. Contact Bluechip Livestock to access independent data on productivity and quality, and to gain the objective comparison on the sheep’s genetics on offer. On completion of the sale, Bluechip Livestock receives a marketing fee from the seller based on the price achieved.

PEAK HILL INDUSTRIES IMMOBILIIZER Sheep Worker The Immobilizer is truly a multi-purpose mobile machine. It provides for husbandry, and other operations - with optional modules added, it is the primary restraining device to enable sheep/lamb weighing and data recording, drafting and crutching etc. Sheep are gently immobilized and safely restrained. Suitable for handling all sized lambs and grown sheep including rams. Many husbandry operations can be performed quickly and easily including drenching, capsule insertion, vaccinating, back-lining, ear tagging, mouthing, crutching, wigging, horn trimming and more.

CONSTRUCTION All steel construction; mostly galvanized sheet metal and precision laser cut components are used. The working parts of the machine are completely enclosed. Two opposing stretched rubber pads, with adjustable tension, are used to restrain each sheep. The pads are actuated by quick acting air chambers located internally. The unit is compact, and has two 150mm rubber wheels and handles for easy movement over a firm surface by one person.

The Immobilizer can be operated in almost any location and can be quickly and easily set up or broken down for transport. The working height can be adjusted to suit the operator, as well as the width and height for the sheep. An air compressor, 8-10cfm with pressure available ranging from around 80-120psi is required for operation. A charged 12 volt battery is also required to power the simple electronics. It can be supplied with a full lead up system, or as a stand-alone unit for permanent use in sheds or yards. The 3 metre galvanized non-back leadup ramp (in two separate linked together pieces) is required for good sheep flow. A jump-stop frame can be clamped to the ramp which prevents sheep jumping over the next in front. A single or dual race leadup system is the preferred option to guide the sheep into the unit with minimum effort.

OPTIONS & SET UP The Immobilizer is supplied as a base unit and customised with added options as required by the particular sheep enterprise or operation. Weigh beams and electronic scales of almost any brand can be supplied or added later. With the manually controlled, air operated drafting module, sheep can be easily and quickly segregated into weight ranges. For crutching while the animal is standing, access is created with the addition of the crutching module. A crutching plant stand can also be supplied, which simply sockets into the frame. 33

OPERATION

MAITENANCE

The “no visual barrier” design, quiet operation, clear see through access and use of the non-back tapered leadup ramp, ensures easy and quick, non-forced self-loading of each sheep into the unit by one person, using little physical effort. Sheep enter the machine singularly and as they move through, they are detected by the electric eye which instantly activates the opposing pads each side of the sheep. The eye, which is mounted on a slide, can be moved forward or backward to stop the sheep in the required position as it moves through.

No lubrication is required due to the use of nylon brushes in all joints and hinge points. The air system does not require maintenance.

The pressure, which can be regulated, holds the sheep from movement in a totally restrained, upright position. The sheep are released by a push button switch (one on either side) when the operation is complete. The Immobilizer can be operated from either one or both sides at once, and the height can be adjusted for operator comfort. 34

PEAKHANDLER The Sheep Handling Machine The Peakhandler is a multi-purpose machine developed for the easy restraint and handling of sheep. The machine has been designed and built for use by the grazier or contractor and it can be operated easily by an inexperienced person. The use of curved, tubular materials in contact areas, plus the ability to regulate the pressure applied to the body of each sheep results in minimal stress and discomfort to the animals during processing.

AIR POWERED

EFFORTLESS

Most farm type air compressors will supply plenty of air to operate the Peakhandler. 10cfm is all that's required. Maximum pressure need not exceed 90psi. The required grabbing force on the sheep is adjusted by the operator’s setting on the air pressure regulator. The air powered rotation pressure can also be regulated as required.

During operation no effort is required at all, just the flick of a handle using one hand. The rollover section of the Peakhandler is air powered with the help of counter-balance of the weight of the sheep held in each of the two cradles, one is inverted, the other standing. Left hand versions of the Peakhandler can be made at request.

THUMB CONTROL

PRECISE

When the operator has completed the job, the grab actuating valve is flicked by the left thumb, the empty cradle instantly grabs the next sheep firmly around the body area. The rollover release handle is then pulled resulting in the sheep lying inverted, comfortable and fully restrained.

You can trust the mechanics. The sheep waiting in the entry ramp enters the machine when the rear gate opens, it sees the sheep leaving the other end and is drawn in. It cannot walk through the machine because the exit gate is closed, when the sheep enters this area its weight depresses the floor which activates a valve, the rear gate is closed under pressure.

AUTOMATIC During the rollover cycle the previously restrained sheep is returned to its feet and released, it walks out the open exit gate. As it vacates the machine, it releases a mechanism which automatically closes the exit gate. As the exit gate closes air is released from the entry gate and it opens allowing the next sheep to enter the machine. The weight of the next sheep triggers an air valve, which activates the air chamber on the rear gate, closing behind the sheep.

SMOOTH The Peakhandler is available with the recommended leadup ramp/race. The dual 1.5m (3m) ramp has two small gates, one half way and one at the entrance, which are held open by springs until a sheep moves past, the weight on the floor activates the gate to close, preventing the sheep from reversing. A complete leadup system can be supplied to help facilitate a smooth, easy flow of sheep to the machine.

SAFE AND FRIENDLY The risk of injuring sheep through breaking legs, bruising, crushing etc is eliminated with the use of the Peakhandler. It is user-friendly and safe, eliminating bending, dragging, lifting and pulling, as well as the risk of being kicked or injured by an unrestrained animal is also eliminated.

35

NO BACK-BENDING With the sheep held inverted, a full crutch can be performed without any back-bending at all. The head and tail rests raise each end of the sheep to allow easy wigging and crutching without obstruction. A flexible drive cable driving the handpiece is manoeuvrable and is the preferred equipment for crutching. Drenching, vaccinating wet and drying and teeth grinding can also be performed. High throughput and accurate results without stress can be VERY FAST achieve with ultra-sound scanning.

ADJUSTABLE To suit the back height of the sheep, each cradle is vertically adjustable with a crank. Cradle length is telescopic, the head and tail rests as well as the near side of each cradle can be correctly adjusted. For use with wethers, the four grabbing pegs in the cradle can be extended and moved to suit the size of the sheep allowing good access to the pizzle. Alternative convex grabs are also supplied which better suit ewe handling. The entry and exit gate positions are adjustable to suit length and standing position of sheep.

When crutching, 2-3 sheep per minute can be processed by an experienced operator and helper. The handpiece is not turned off between sheep. If foot treatment, paring or inspection is being performed, the Peakhandler can be set to one of the lower height settings on the four supporting legs to allow the ideal position of the feet. Throughput can be very fast and freshly shorn sheep can be easily handled. Cradle attachments can be supplied for lambs and smaller sheep. Air operated foot parers are most suitable, a full pressure quick coupling outlet is provided on the machine.

PORTABLE

LOW MAINTENANCE, PRACTICAL DESIGN No specially made parts are used, all are readily available, and many are stocked by hardware stores. All components are durable and long wearing. The air system requires no lubrication, filtering or servicing. Daily lubrication of all moving parts with an oil pot is the only requirement. Storage under cover is desirable.

The Peakhandler will fit in a 6’ x 4’ box trailer or can be easily loaded into a ute or tray back, 6" rubber wheels are attached to one end with fold down handles at the other for easy movement on a firm surface. Operations can be carried out in the woolshed, in permanent or mobile yards in remote locations. Units can be set up on purpose built trailers (2 types) for larger or contract operations; Drop Trailer or Peak Pro Trailer.

THE BOTTOM LINE… SAVE MONEY Calculate the dollars you will save with a PEAKHANDLER investment With hundreds of Peakhandlers now in operation throughout Australia. Many operators are enjoying the benefits this cost effective machine can produce. The cost of a machine can be saved in less than a year by the use of farm sourced labour operating a Peakhandler for crutching. Other side benefits include secondary husbandry operations which can be performed at the same time, reducing mustering and stressful handling. For professional contractors, graziers and authorities using the Peakhandler in foot treatment or inspection work, the sheer savings in ‘on the job’ labour as well as very fast throughput, mobility, low maintenance and operating costs has resulted in many profitable enterprises. 36

SHEAREZY The SHEAREZY is designed to enable the shearer, either experienced or a novice, to effectively and easily shear sheep whilst in the upright, standing position and to contain the wool as a complete, intact fleece presented ready for classing. Good tallies can be achieved after mastering a technique. The machine can be set as a single stand, or multiple units can be coupled together. They can be fixed to a trailer for use as a portable shearing shed. As a single unit it is portable and can easily be moved by two people to be set up in any location, typically in a wool shed, in machinery sheds or in the paddock.

LEAD UP An efficient lead-up and race system is recommended for a smooth flow of sheep into the machine. A farm type air compressor which will deliver approx. 8cfm at 100psi is required to provide power to the machine. A conventional wide comb hand piece, coupled to a flexible cable shaft, can be driven by a conventional overhead plant mounted on the adjustable stand on the ShearEzy.

ENTRY Individual sheep enter the elevated compartment through an inclined ramp. A decoy pen can be attached to the other end of the machine where a sheep can be placed to draw the following sheep into the machine (this is not always necessary and takes up space). When multiple units are arranged in line, this decoy pen then becomes a bridge into the next machine.

37

TRANSFER When the operator requires a sheep for shearing a thumb controlled air valve is activated which clamps the body of a waiting sheep in the elevated compartment. A second valve is then used to transfer the sheep from the standing position to the back down totally inverted on the manipulating rollers.

RESTRAINT While the transfer mechanism still has the sheep clamped and restrained in this inverted position, the rear feet are clamped to air operated padded clamps. At this time the front legs are also placed in special manipulating hooks. Another air valve is then actuated which applies regulated horizontal pressure, stretching the sheep across the rollers which support its weight, at the same time the transfer mechanism is released which retracts back to the elevated compartment. The automatic inlet gate allows another sheep into the empty compartment to await the above described process.

ROTATION While the sheep is initially on its back the belly wool is removed, the neck is opened up, the crutch and inside of the legs are cleaned up. Each main segment of the body is shorn by "long blows", as each section is completed, the sheep is rotated 60 degrees by the operator depressing an air valve button with his knee. The sheep rotates toward the operator as the wool falls away into the tray below which contains the whole fleece.

MANIPULATION Tension is applied to stretch the skin of the sheep to allow for smoother blows and reduce second cuts. During the manipulation process the front end of the sheep's body can be bent banana shaped toward the operator, stretching the skin the full length of its side. Clamping action of the rollers tighten the skin around the belly area. Closing and spreading of the front legs allows access to the neck area. These are all air powered operations controlled by the shearer as required during each sequence of the process.

CLEAN UP When a sheep is shorn, it is then released by the tilting of the rollers. Another air valve is triggered which ejects the fleece out the rear of the machine into a holding tray which is at knee height - no wool actually reaches the floor. Shearing of the next sheep can be performed before the previous fleece is removed from the tray.

DROP TRAILER Suitable for Immobilizer, Peakhandler & VeeEzy Fully sprung suspension. Lowers down with jack and trailer, sits flat on the ground allowing you to work straight off the trailer with minimal unpacking and setting up. Checker plate flooring. Ramps easily pack up onto trailer for transport.

THERMOSKIN Weather Protection for Shorn Sheep WHAT IS THERMOSKIN ThermoSkin is a lanolin based liquid that is sprayed onto sheep after shearing. It reduces the risk of mortality by keeping them warm. It forms a fine, totally natural film which covers the animal and can be applied to all ages and breeds of sheep; more successfully on sheep scored 2 and higher.

HOW THERMOSKIN WORKS

When cold, sheep will seek shelter, huddle together and shiver to create body warmth. Sheep lose condition because they are not grazing. Six minutes after running through the ThermoSkin spray unit, the sheep have stopped shivering and can graze comfortably.

ThermoSkin liquid is pumped directly from a 25L container through a portable automatic spray unit to create a fine mist that shorn sheep run through in a few seconds. The mist covers the whole animal (the tips of the wool and any bare skin), including the stomach. It does not block the pizzle, anus or vulva of the animal.

ThermoSkin can be used directly with solvent based lice treatments - NOT WATER BASED. If sheep are exposed to water based treatments (backline), they must be TOTALLY DRY before treating with ThermoSkin. It is:  Protection for sheep that have been traditionally shorn or biologically defleeced  Physiologically harmless  Environmentally friendly  100% biodegradable and contains all natural ingredients  Safe and does not damage or affect the wool  Easily scoured out of wool ThermoSkin Plus is a version of ThermoSkin with the addition of UV absorbers to prevent sunburn. These UV ingredients are expensive and make it a much more complex manufacturing process, which all adds to the cost of the product. ThermoSkin Plus is therefore only made to order. It can be used on naked sheep, on the ears and rump which are very vulnerable to sunburn. It has also been used when the biological harvesting nets have split and failed, exposing the sheep to sun damage. If you are a Moses & Son wool client and purchase a drum of ThermoSkin from one of our stores, you are eligible to hire the ThermoSkin applicator for FREE! 39

Sheep only require up to 50mls per animal, and it dries within 2 minutes of application. Sheep can be exposed to rain 10-15 minutes after application and it will not affect the efficiency of the product. ThermoSkin assists with maintaining preshorn condition and supports a constant body temperature. With ThermoSkin, shorn sheep are protected from wind chill even if they lie on wet grass. ThermoSkin is a sheep management tool that saves sheep from the impact of cold weather, thereby improving productivity by providing peace of mind and minimising unnecessary checks after shearing.

BENEFITS Make more money by using ThermoSkin because:  There are no setbacks for sheep after shearing sheep maintain preshorn condition and can gain weight. Better conditioned and heavier sheep attract higher prices.  Nicks and cuts heal quicker allowing sales to take place earlier, putting money in your pockets earlier.  Earlier sales means a saving on feed.  It reduces stock losses in shorn animals, so there are more sheep to sell.  There is no need to use coats, so you can reduce labour costs of rugging and initial cost of the coats. Have less stress because  ThermoSkin reduces stress to the sheep, sheep don't suffer.  There are no worries about stock losses.  You can shear any time of year, even in winter months if it suits management. Enjoy the flexibility.  There is no need to use sheds.  There is no need to use snow combs.

KEEP CONDITION Think about how much it costs you when sheep lose condition after shearing. Sheep treated with ThermoSkin after shearing maintain and improve condition. Most have a positive weight gain, some achieving gains of 3.34.0kgs 15-17 days after application. When you use ThermoSkin, shorn sheep feed straight away and do not experience a check.

TESTIMONIALS 

"The real difference ThermoSkin makes is that the day after shearing, the sheep and goats are feeding at day break in frost, wind or rain. The result is animals are growing their fleece and gaining weight, optimising joining potential - all from day one. And for us, it takes out the continual stress over the weather." Ian and Helen Cathles, Wee Jasper.

"We also found that despite the terrible weather, our instance of preg tox was also reduced by the use of ThermoSkin, with the ewes returning to the paddock so much happier." Andrew and Max Rayner, Mudgee.

"We ran shorn sheep through at 6pm in the evening. That night there was a couple of inches of snow, but we had no losses as the sheep were not freezing and tucked up behind every log and stick they could find. After treating sheep with ThermoSkin they are out feeding and better off right from the word go." Bill Fletcher, Berridale.

For the safety of all drivers & operators we would appreciate your cooperation with the safe unloading of trucks. 1. Please give us a call to let us know you are heading in & how many bales you have on. 2. Upon arrival, park between the yellow lines at a safe distance from any other trucks. Drivers, if you haven’t been to our site before, please ask our staff members for assistance.  Hi-Vis shirt/vest should be worn at all times whilst on site.  Follow directions of the forklift operator when driving into unloading area.  Hand over paperwork (Classer Specie) for unloading to the forklift operator.  Prior to unloading, the forklift operator will inspect the load for “in transit movement” & instability. If the load appears unstable, the forklift should be used to straighten the load BEFORE straps etc. are released  Remain in any of the Designated Safety Zones or in cab whilst unloading is occurring.  Speak with the forklift operator when there is a requirement to shift curtains/bars/gates or a check on the loading.  Do not move into the unloading area until the forklift has come to a stop with handbrake applied, or, the forklift has moved a safe distance away (3m safety exclusion zone).  Drivers must not close curtains on the opposite side of truck, whilst unloading is occurring. The Forklift Operator will cease unloading if this occurs.  Drivers must adhere to site traffic plans & pedestrian walkways, when moving around the site.  Upon completion of unloading; the Forklift Operator will advise that straps may be rolled etc., & the truck may depart from the area.
